Bible Ah-Ha! #2

We’re trying something.

For a couple of days and then once in a while, I’m going to try to describe one of those ah-ha! moments of insight that I think has helped me better understand the Bible.

My hope is that you will share with us one of your own discoveries as well.

Degrees of Implication

I still remember the way lights seemed to go on the day someone explained to me that, when it comes to seeing the relationship of the Bible to our lives, there are:

1. Necessary implications

2. Probable implications

3. Possible implications

4. Improbable implications, and

5. Impossible implications

One reason this is so important is that, as Haddon Robinson often emphasizes, heresy is often spread not only by misinterpretation of Scripture, but also by bad application.

Since the authority of Scripture rests in God, in his original intent for meaning, and in the application to our lives by his Spirit, it seems wise to adopt the following guidelines:

1. Root our convictions in necessary implications

2. Form our opinions around probable implications, and,

3. Express our preferences as possible implications of the Bible.

OK, now I’d like to hear from you. Before I describe something else that was an ah-ha! moment for me, what would you consider to be an important discovery that has helped you understand the most important book ever written?

The most amazing fact that has glued my faith in the authentic unerring words of Our Creator is it’s miraculous preservation. This history inspires me to trust it completely, and study the words with an open heart for imparted knowledge.
A question I have often pondered is– Was it unusual for fisherman of that time to be able to read and write? Were Peter and John educated when Jesus called them, or did they become so later?

I guess my eureka moment, as regards the Bible, came when I realised that it addresses virtually every aspect of everyday life – this made me realise that following the Bible’s tenets is a win-win situation for anyone.

Katyjim, Acts 4:13 indicates that Peter and John did not have special training in the law. Luke gives us that impression through the opinion of first century Jewish leaders when he writes, “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” As “a people of the book”, and with a synagogue in nearby Capernaum, literacy for a Jewish fisherman appears to be neither certain nor out of the question.

This idea of the implications is very interesting. Could you please expound on it and provide an example or two?

  5. martdehaan says:

Mike, thanks for asking. I’ll post a separate “More on Implications.”

    Very well said!
B.I.B.L.E. – Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth which God has given us as a life manual that we can understand and obey (Ephesians 3:4). Therefore, no part of it is meant for private interpretation. It makes things so much easier because God does not speak in tongues and He means exactly what He says. Most of it needs to be taken literally except in some places where it is figurative.
