We’re trying something.
For a couple of days and then once in a while, I’m going to try to describe one of those ah-ha! moments of insight that I think has helped me better understand the Bible.
My hope is that you will share with us one of your own discoveries as well.
Degrees of Implication
I still remember the way lights seemed to go on the day someone explained to me that, when it comes to seeing the relationship of the Bible to our lives, there are:
1. Necessary implications
2. Probable implications
3. Possible implications
4. Improbable implications, and
5. Impossible implications
One reason this is so important is that, as Haddon Robinson often emphasizes, heresy is often spread not only by misinterpretation of Scripture, but also by bad application.
Since the authority of Scripture rests in God, in his original intent for meaning, and in the application to our lives by his Spirit, it seems wise to adopt the following guidelines:
1. Root our convictions in necessary implications
2. Form our opinions around probable implications, and,
3. Express our preferences as possible implications of the Bible.
OK, now I’d like to hear from you. Before I describe something else that was an ah-ha! moment for me, what would you consider to be an important discovery that has helped you understand the most important book ever written?
