Is Prophecy Being Fulfilled?

Israel is in her ancestral homeland after almost 2000 years of dispersion. Her presence, however, is a problem not only for displaced Palestinians, but for a whole international community that is trying to come to terms with rising oil prices, global economic instability, China’s ascendancy, Russian resurgence, and the threat of weapons of mass destruction. Who can deny that the storm swirling around one of the worlds smallest nations is looking more and more like the Bible’s description of the last days? Even secular thinkers are aware of Armageddon-like possibilities.

Yet whether some of us have been wise in our claim that Bible prophecy is being fulfilled in our day is another issue. Crying “wolf” in the past has caused followers of Christ to do reckless things in anticipation of an any-moment return of Christ. Some who were sure that “the signs of the time” showed that Christ would return in their lifetime failed to plan for the future. Many lost credibility not only for themselves but for the promise of Christ’s return.

I’m not doubting that prediction is a major emphasis of the Bible. A third of the Scriptures are futuristic in content. Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of prophecy when He said, “Be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44).

Yet, almost 2,000 years later, our generation has exhausted itself with millennial hysteria, failed predictions of Christ’s return, all fueled by media and publishing excesses.

Because of the way many of us have lost our way in Bible prophecy, there are now many younger pastors and congregations who believe that it is far more important to be good managers of our time and limited resources that to be trying to determine what time it is on God’s prophetic time table.

So what I’d like to do is think together about how we are handling the subject of Bible prophecy. But before I say any more, I’d like to know whether you are seeing or experiencing more or less interest in what the Bible has to say about the last days.

Recognizing that there are many mysteries we may never see unfolded in our own lifetimes, it may be a matter of “both/and” rather than “either/or”. Paul says of the Thessalonians that they were busy- at the same time- serving the living God, while they waited for the Son from heaven. It is the balance of the present commitment with the future view that can give us a sense of purpose when life seems pointless.

Mart, i believe not only being ready, but desiring Christ’s return should be one of my prayers, Come Quickly Lord Jesus, but there are many events and very relable sourses that i believe are true, and as a child of God i need to know what they are to tell others about, whereby they can get ready also.
Very young people may not know this or even think about it, but God has caused knowlege to be increased at such an alarming rate just in my life time, that the world has never know before, God promised this just before He comes again.
Mankind has experienced Heart attacks like never before, God promised this.
One world Government could take place at any time.
There could very well be a One World Religion very soon.
I believe this will not be the end of the world, but i am ready, and desiring for the Lord to come, and telling others He is coming soon, and prsying that God will come soon i believe is what God desires for me to be doing.

Over the years I have developed the opinion that I would rather be Raptured by the Lord while doing His work than while sitting in a prophecy conference speculating on when the Rapture might take place. Each believer varies from the other. Because of this, we should be tolerant of those who are more enthused by the prophetic time table. However, in Paul’s prophectic books of 1 and 2nd Thessalonians, he did not want prophecy to lead to irresponsible behavior (2 Thess 3:10-13).

I have certainly been trying to work through current events from a Biblical perspective. If the end was near when the Lord walked the earth, certainly it is nearer today. However, neither living like a “future-martyr” for Christ (failing to plan or live life today) nor acting the ostrich with our heads in the sand will please the Lord or get us anywhere. I welcome the coming of the Lord, whenever it should be, as I know there is a purpose and glorious end to any and all suffering that we endure. Constant Biblical vigilence, prayer, and submission to God’s will is the only thing that will see us through, be the End in our lifetime or not.

  5. Thomas Brown says:

2Pe 3:4 This verse sums it up concerning the cry wolf scenario. 2Pe 3 goes even further clarifing His coming. That does not weaken my faith, as my knowledge of the scriptures has increased over the years. I remember back in the late 60’s and early 70’s people were saying He is coming any day now. They were right. That felt good then. It feels more than good now. It feels right. We need to always be ready, and be about the Fathers Bussiness. Matt. 24 and 25

    In Christ,

I have pondered on the meaning of 1 Timothy 4:1-3 with relation to “latter times”.(KJV) In one respect is this latter times referring to the times before Jesus returns? Secondly, if the translation was accurate (and my English grammer is as well), then the “who” is referring to “some shall depart from the faith”. It then continues that these same “who” will speak “lies in hypocrisy”, “forbidding to marrying”, and commanding to abstain from meats. The intriguing thing here is I often associate end times activity with the unsaved. If I’m reading the passage of scripture in the proper context it is former professed christians that Paul is writing about here. If so, then at least two of the three things I listed haven’t happened yet. (i.e. No marriage, no meat). The point is that we should be looking for people formerly in the church who then adopt some of these end times “edicts”. Nevertheless, another commenter was right in saying that our concentration should be on seeking the lost, not sitting on our hands watching the newspapers, TV, and the internet for signs and prophecy fulfillment. Nonetheless, everything stated in the Bible has purpose. Before Jesus’ arrival the three wise men were hopeful because of prophecy. Hope is important. We don’t necessarily need just prophecy to know God’s word is true. If God has given you eyes to see and ears to hear, you can have lived a relatively short while and have seen that God’s word in life is right on the money, especially with respect to human behavior.

I believe we should all be praying for the return of Christ and “looking with anticipation” for His glorious return. Remember, God’s timing is always on time, never late and never early. I know there are false religions and false teachers everywhere, but I also believe in 1 Peter Paul was talking to Timothy about that sopecific time in Timothy’s life. You have to put the verse in context. One thing that bothers me about today is the United States role in Israel. Our gornment seems to be wanting to help I srael give away it’s land and this is contrary to God’s word. I pray for President Bush daily and just wish he would not be so helpful to the Palestinians, who ultimately want to destroy Israel. Every President I have known, in their last term of office , has tried to bring peace about in their own strength. I just wish more government officials knew more about the Bible. The boundaries God set forth In Exodus and Joshua are Real boundaries and God isn’t going to change His mind. Also, prophecy says that until the times of the Gentiles are filled(all the gentiles God wants to be in His church), the chosen ones( Israel) will still be blinded to the true Messiah. So, until God has brought everyone into His church that He wants or selects(draws) to Himself, there will be chaos for Israel. All I know is, I trust God and will stay in His word, trying to tell as many people as I can about His unconditional love for them and that He has a plan for their lives, and desires that none perish, but that all be saved. I just keep looking and waiting for my Lord’s glorious return!

i want Jesus to come soon. the way the world is today i can’t help but to want him to be coming really soon. but in the meantime yes i want just as much to be telling people that are lost there is a Savior who loves them and that He wants them to spend eternity with Him. Yes, come Lord Jesus and make all things new!

To ignore Bible prophecy is to conduct ourselves as the 5 foolish virgins, who were totally caught unprepared at the arrival of the bridegroom. As Christians, we don’t dread the day of the Lord. Having our lamps filled with the oil of the Holy Spirit we are on a constant vigil, preparing ourselves for that glorious day when we shall see Him face to face and be with Him forever. However, we cannot quit or forget to do the work that Christ has called us to do as we continue to look for the coming of the Lord. Being constantly aware of Christ’s second coming not only sustains the Christian with hope to press forward but also creates a sense of urgency with which the Gospel has to be proclaimed.

  10. dshomebody says:

I believe I have become more aware and interested in the Prophetic Word of Jesus Christ, esp. since 9/11. I believe that God’s prophetic word is three fold, first I believe is for those who are saved that they should stay saved and continue to look for the blessed hope and those who profess salvation but are half stepping to get in full step with the word and will of God and the lost who are seeing prophecy fulfill right before their eyes but don’t have a clue as to what is going on. When you boil it all down it works to desire of God the father that He desires none to perish. Because God so loves the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever belief on him shall not perish but have everlasting life and more importantly that Jesus the Christ didnot come to condemn the world (mankind) but that the world through him (Jesus) might be saved. This the blessed hope. This the Prophetic Word that God has been trying to fulfill in the lives of all mankind for the past 2000 years. Are we there yet, I believe closer than we use to be, but that’s why God continue to allow certain things to happen in our present world and why the true church must be ready to always give and answer for the hope that they believe and stand on that we may be able to win the lost for Christ.

    Love and Peace

Yes, Bible prophecy is certainly something I think about, especiallly because of my lost loved ones. I think most people don’t like to think or consider on these things because of what is going to happen to the world after the rapture. I truly think and believe more preachers need to preach and teach about what is going to happen after the rapture. If I was lost I would rather be “scared” into heaven (of course through salvation” than to die and go to hell clueless of what is going to happen. Yes, I truly believe we are in the “last days” . What are we as christians willing to do to see our loved ones saved??

  12. Fil says:

Its amazing to study prophesy, not to as a holier-than-thou attitude, but to intensify the hope in His coming.

He said that he doesnt know the hour, only the Father knows. and generations have passed yet we havent see Him.

BUT the signs are here more than ever!!!!
We know now that the world is round, not flat. It says in Matthew 24 that the gospel will be preached in the entire world and then the end will come.

This is one crucial promise that I take to heart. more than ever, Missionaries are dying and more are risking their lives to share the gospel of Jesus Christ to Eskimos in the north to underground churches in Middle East.

the Lord has warned us many times that the world will get worse. Isn’t?

It was free love during the 60s I believe— the deterioration of values— rise in divorce, diseases etc. Now were on call to another step to obliterate family values on marriage and abortion.

The wrong is the new right and ‘people’ are centered into politicians propaganda. Relativism or sense of equal rights is now rendering our society godless.

And look at technology, we have become more reliant on it and it has become easier to monitor people through sophisticated tracking systems and protocols.

Technology is still developing but new cohesive method is underway to make our access to commerce easy.

Global Economic plan is seriously taken into consideration by many nations to lessen risks. I dont think its impossible because EU has done it.

With all these developments, I thank the Lord that we can see a possible UPROAR of wickedness. Nations affect nations.

Whether Jesus will come today or in the next 100 years, I run the race to share the gospel in prayer and readiness in faith, guided by His Words.
