Is 176 the Punchline of the Longest Smile in the Bible?

The longest Psalm in the Bible has 176 verses. Over and over, and in so many ways, this song celebrates the words, principles, and laws of God.

Interestingly, 119 is a lot like Psalm 1 and 19, but much longer.

The first two verses of Psalm 119 give a taste of the sustained, repetitive praise that follows.

“1 Happy are people of integrity, who follow the law of the LORD.
2 Happy are those who obey his decrees and search for him with all their hearts.”

But let’s drop in 160 similar verses later. Read, if you will, the next 15 verses. And then look carefully at the last and 176th verse.

“162 I rejoice in your word like one who finds a great treasure. 163 I hate and abhor all falsehood, but I love your law. 164 I will praise you seven times a day because all your laws are just. 165 Those who love your law have great peace and do not stumble. 166 I long for your salvation, LORD, so I have obeyed your commands. 167 I have obeyed your decrees, and I love them very much.”

“168 Yes, I obey your commandments and decrees, because you know everything I do. 169 O LORD, listen to my cry; give me the discerning mind you promised. 170 Listen to my prayer; rescue me as you promised. 171 Let my lips burst forth with praise, for you have taught me your principles.”

“172 Let my tongue sing about your word, for all your commands are right. 173 Stand ready to help me, for I have chosen to follow your commandments. 174 O LORD, I have longed for your salvation, and your law is my delight. 175 Let me live so I can praise you, and may your laws sustain me.”

(now here it comes)…

“176 I have wandered away like a lost sheep; come and find me, for I have not forgotten your commands” (Psalm 119:162-176 NLT).

I, for one, think this last verse is one of the most wonderful and welcome smiles in the Bible. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve often said I long for the spirit of the 119th Psalm. (Even though I’ve also thought, “Oh, come on now. Who can say they’ve kept the commandments of God? I’m not sure I’ve really kept any of them!”–at least not in the way Jesus explained the spiritual meaning of the law)

Yet, I can readily say, “I do want the life-changing wisdom of the Bible to have that kind of place in my heart.”

But I am ever so grateful for the realism and the grace that I find in the last verse. In so many ways I say, “Oh yes Lord, that’s the way it is with me. Your words and laws show me how life should be. Without your words I’m not sure I would have any sense of direction. Yet, somehow, Lord, in all of the knowledge and insight I so often find myself feeling like a lost sheep, alone, confused, and desperately needing you to come and find me!”

Amen, Mart! Verse 176 is the greatest revelation of what the Christian walk is like. I do not know where the zealousy goes over the years. Sometimes I am afraid that I have lost my saltiness; however, there is such promise in that verse that he will find us wherever we are. Thanks again for the inspiration!

It seems to me that the more I put into the relationship with God the more I get. When He prompts me to do things and I do not do them because of how it may look to others I feel a separation. The more of myself I give to Him the more passionate I feel toward Him. I find myself holding back that passion sometimes because of what He will require of me, knowing that His will is always the best. Go figure! He knows our heart and our mind, yet He continues to guide us and will never let us go although we may walk away. As the psalmist says doing things God’s way brings joy and happiness but I believe at times I want to remain in my misery, sad isn’t it. Those are the times when I know He comes and looks for me and carries me for a while till He can let me down to walk with Him again. I guess the main thing to remember if one will keep Him first He will ignite that zeal once again if you really want it. He knows we will wander off, He knows everything about us and His love will never be held back or taken away, Praise God!!

Yep …The Good Shepard will find us! Either with the rod and staff or we’ll just hear His voice and recognize it. Even when we’re far away, stray and wounded!
Thank you for reminded me that!
Thank you Lord, for never leaving me!

The Shepherd nevers leaves the sheep; it is the the sheep that stray from the Shepherd. But our Shepherd will always find us. He will always watch over us and care for us. And if we stray He will bind our wounds and hold us to His bosom. All of us have strayed at one time or another and more oft than we care to admit.
We serve a wonderful Lord, who thankfully never strays from us.

So true we were just talking about this yesterday and found Isaiah 40:11 He tends his flock like a shepherd:He gathers lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. So comforting and such a picture of our Lord the good shepherd.

How does one determine if it is the “longest smile” in v 76? I’m smiling because you are smiling…you are funny. But yes, it is very reassuring to know that He is always quick to respond to the feeblest and faintest bleat for help. The cool thing about our Good Shepherd is that He leaves the 99 “good and obedient” sheep to go and find the lost one and then celebrates the lost and found rather than the rejoicing over the ones who never went astray!

  7. poohpity says:

    Hey daisymarygoldr,

I think the neat part is the only one who never went astray was Jesus so He rejoices over all of us who have sinned. No matter how long one has been a believer we all still sin so each and every time we sin He came to restore a right relationship with Him.

  8. 4everwealth says:

Praise be to the only faithful God, our heavenly Father!! For even when we are unfaithful, He is faithful. He alone is the good shepherd. What a priviledge to have to experience such love, such devotion, such mercy, such grace.

I pray for all my brothers and sisters in the Lord, all over the world, that we all forever stand in awe of His love that not only set us free but finds us when we stray! And we do stray!!

    God bless you Mart!

  9. Abigail2 says:

Thank You Father for Your grace, goodness, and mercy, for bringing me into Your fold.
    In The Good Shepherds name,Jesus
    Amen
