Black Friday and Terror in Mumbai

Something about the news on this morning after a Thanksgiving holiday feels like being on the wrong side of the road in fast traffic. So much is coming at us too fast even to process.

Black Friday with doorbuster deals. Developing terror in Mumbai. Warnings for NY subways, and a president-elect facing such economic and security issues that he can’t afford to wait for the swear-in of Jan 20.

Then in middle of my thoughts, fighting for front and center, there’s Good Friday… also linked to buying power, danger in the streets, and inexpressible suffering that helps us make sense of the worst images of breaking news.

Can’t help but think that our Creator’s birth, death, and mission of rescue is the real and only story that can make sense of every other story that is fighting to be told. It was that story that pushed the Apostle Paul to choose the most extreme and inclusive words when he wrote to those who share his trust in Jesus,

God has purchased our freedom with his blood and has forgiven all our sins. Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before God made anything at all and is supreme over all creation. Christ is the one through whom God created everything in heaven and earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— kings, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities. Everything has been created through him and for him. He existed before everything else began, and he holds all creation together…This includes you who were once so far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions, yet now he has brought you back as his friends. He has done this through his death on the cross in his own human body…But you must continue to believe this truth and stand in it firmly. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.” (Col 1:14-23 NLT).

Yes Mart when I see the world news, I am reminded of how desperately the world needs the “good news” the GOSPEL.

My heart is heavy for the victums of the cowardly actions of these dark and evil men, in India.

However if we were to kill every one of these men, more would rise up to “defend” their paticular brand of “faith”. Only through the power of Jesus can such a dark heart be changed.

Keeping my eyes on the Lord, watching the world makes me sad and long even more for HIS return.

Mart-I agree totally with your take on the almost “overwhelming” news reports on the day after we celebrate our many blessings and Thanksgiving. A day set aside to reflect and be especially thankful for our many blessings God has bestowed upon us. They are many. I’m afraid Black Friday overlooks Thanksgiving and takes away from the real meaning of the upcoming holiday of Christmas. I’m so thankful that because Christ sufferred and died for us, our Black Friday can be a Good Friday. The economic news and the news from Mumbai… makes for a depressing day. But we have the “hope” in Jesus Christ.

    Good morning all.
The news can indeed be overwhelming and sometimes I too find it hard when lawlessness rises not to fall into coldness (Matt. 24:12)

I know that my response today will be controversial but I am truly seeking thoughtful dialog on the subject.

I personally believe that there is sin that leads to death (1John 5) and that the terrorist in Mombai and others like them have committed it (cf.Genesis 9:6).
That is not to say that we should not pray for their salvation. We often forget that death is NOT the end!
Todays ODB clearly points out that even if others do rise up, their actions require a choice.

I am also one of those that tries not to let the media influemce my Christmas spending habbits. Since I have very little invested (a lot less lately) in an IRA, I try not to let it bother me when retail reports that it might end its year in the red. If everything ‘goes south’ God is still God!

    Yes, this IS good friday.
I don’t have any money left after paying bills, but, you know, it is still a good friday, because Jesus died for me and I am saved.
I am praying for those suffering in India and all over the world and even right here.
So many people have even less than I do. So many people are suffering and crying out to God. I pray that He hears them and heals them. I know that He wants to help them and hold them in His arms to comfort them.
    God is so good!

“Jesus is the gift”, that is all I have to say about shopping. I know one thing, I have never been so close to death before as at this time watching my mom with cancer. I am reminded daily all we have is one day at a time and we need to be Jesus to whomever we meet just for today and nothing else are we able to control. He is in control not us, thank God!!!!!

As these terrible events unfold in all of their complexity right in front of our eyes, it compels us even more, to preach Christ. Only the blood of Christ can transform stony human hearts that do not flinch from shedding innocent blood. Only the Gospel of His peace can calm the fear, anxiety, and confusion due to economic crisis that is crippling many lives today.

Yes, it is because of Good Friday, Jesus is the only comfort for those whose lives got shattered due to financial destitution and death. Uprooting evil is not the answer… Jesus Himself wants the tares and the wheat to grow together until the harvest. Jesus Christ is the only certain Hope to the uncertain world, investing themselves in false hopes.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

  7. wretch-like-me says:

I am reminded of the parable about the two men who built homes…one on sand; the other on solid rock.

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.

poohpity, My mother died almost 27 years ago, day after her birthday. She was like me in that she was never sick nor physicaly impaired. However just after visiting with me and Matthew she had went home(next door) and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. For the next 72 hours I stayed at her bedside. The doctors would do nothing to save her, as in their opinion she could never recover from the brain damage she had already suffered. I had ask for other opinions only to be told it wasn’t neccessary.

She was a wonderful mother and a strong Christian woman. I read John 14 over and over to her while she lay unconcious. On Monday afternoon around 4 oclock her breathing became intermitten and labored. I called for a nurse. But before anyone could come. While my brother and I sat there with her. This wonderful woman whom the doctors said could never recover, only remain in the state of a coma until her death, sat up in bed opened her eyes looked me right in the eyes. Then fell back dead.

She was always afraid of being a burden on me in her old age. She never would have been, but God took her in good health so she never had feel that she was.
My father died 8 weeks later from cancer he never knew he had. When he was told of his cancer, 1 week after my mothers funeral, he opted for no treatments as they had told him it was terminal.

One day at a time, is the only attitude to live by. Appreciate each day for it’s blessings. Remembering that God is in control and we are along for the ride.

I continue to pray for you and your mother in the struggle and trials you are suffering. I do hope your prayers are answered and your mother is able to defeat this awful sickness. Many do.

Yes, the things we hear going on in this world are very disturbing especially after just celebrating a holiday of thanksgiving. It is so good to know that even though things in this world and in our lives may seem hopeless and discouraging we have a loving Savior who is our hope. May we learn how to be a constant reflection of hope to those who don’t know Jesus and haven’t found that hope. Also an encouragement to those who do know Jesus but are going through some tough trials. God Bless!

I am thankful for what I have, I lost my father a day after my 51 birthday three years ago. But I am always thankful for the years I knew him!

I am having to remind my self all the time that God is in control, this world and new Administration is very scary. I keep asking my self were have all the men of honor and Christian values gone. What happened to men like Reagan gone that were/are not scared to say they feel that life must have Christ in it, that government is not he answer. Christ is and what we do with him.

I was reading in Genesis this morning and the verse that struck me was “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” (Gen 15:1 Niv) And it brought to mind For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (or fear), but a spirit of power, of love and self-discipline. (2Tim 1:7 ) This has helped me over the past couple of days to remember the Sovereignty, Power and Grace of our Lord to not be overwhelmed with sorrow and distress, when we are hard pressed on all sides. My prayers and heart goes out to all the families who experinced loss today and yesterday. And especially to poohpity and for your mother suffering cancer.May the Father of all compassion and the God of all comfort, comfort you in your troubles. With Christ’s Love….

You know for the life of me I can’t even begin to imagine what goes on in the mind of these people that makes them able to do some of these cowardly, evil things. I have been around the block in this country’s big cities and spent time in Illinois juvenile DOC for three years only to graduate to maximum prison twice before I was 23. I was born again while on the last trip while spending 13 months in segregation for defending myself. We only got out to take a shower once a week but I took mail Bible courses because I didn’t know about the bible or why there are so many different religons. There was a riot and the cons gained control of where I was at so I took my bunk and jammed it so I could hold down on one end and covered up with the mattress for 3 days to keep them out. Did I mention I was a tall thin white boy with hair down to my belt???
That was thiry years ago and I have found that people are all the same, if you go to the ER the doctor knows where the organs are and what they do regardless of your size or color we were created equal. If I live to be 200 years old I can’t understand how these people can hate Americans so much they just murder innocent people that would probably go to war and defend there families in some part of the world if called to do so and maybe already have. Is it Christians or Americans that are so hated??

I don’t know anything for sure except God and his Son Jesus which is all that matters and I for one believe we won’t have to much more time to wait for the answers to the Kingdom of God.

  13. poohpity says:

Thank you so much Steve for the encouragement and everybody for the prayers, they are sure needed. I thank all of you for all the wonderful heart felt blogs. I think that it is so wonderful how the Lord uses our experiences to comfort others in their pain, it doesn’t make it hurt so much. In His love Deborah

  14. SFDBWV says:

Deborah, You are welcome, and thank you for your kindness.

The Bible is many things, one thing it is, is a story. Not just a story, but a story about God and man’s experiances. Apart and together.

Life without others and without sharing is very dull and well” lifeless”.

The Bible lets us read about everyones triumphs and failures. About others grief and joy. Life is meant to be shared with each other.

This blog would be unecessary without people sharing their own stories of lifes experiances. Instead it would only be another tract making a repetitious statement. A good statement, but without flavor.

See all of you here today. I pray that today is the best day for everyone.

    Steve

Children out playing are sent scurrying inside into the arms of a parent when a loud thunder claps. As a parent how wonderful is the feeling of your child looking to you for the comfort & security they so desperately need. Life is filled with these “thunder claps” that send us scurrying into the arms of our loving Savior. How he must love it when we seek Him & Him only for this comfort & security we so desperately seek. His greatest desire is for me to have a intimate relationship with Him. Personal difficulties & uncertainty of the world’s problems often serve as a catalysts to this end. Like it or not that is how our fallen nature works.
