Mary Did You Know?

Never got the last winter storm that was supposed to materialize today. Instead we got a lot of rain and a flood watch. The Grand River, for which our town is named (Grand Rapids, MI), has developed an ice jam and backed up to flood stage. Now the wind is kicking up and the temperature is dropping again.

Since we are not in a flood plain, looks like we’re going to be able to settle in for a quiet Christmas Eve.

It’s also a good time to let you know how much I appreciate your interest in the community of this blog. From our conversations of the last few months I know that we are experiencing a wide range of wonderful and difficult circumstances in this Christmas season of 2008. So whether you have occasion to share the joys of friends and family, or just praying to endure the night, here’s a Christmas Card link to a song titled “Mary Did You Know?” that has resonated at different times with both my joys and hurts.

Some of you probably have known it for a long time, but I stumbled onto this version by Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd a couple of years ago. Since I’m not as cultured as some of you :-), I’d have to say that this is my all time favorite Christmas song. Can’t get over the power of the lyrics composed by Mark Lowry and the hauntingly moving melody and rendition by Rogers and Judd.

Here’s the link. For some reason when I opened it with my Firefox browser the music didn’t load. But worked fine for me with Internet Explorer.

Link: Mary Did You Know. If that doesn’t work try copying this link into your Internet Explorer browser: http://www.bonniesplace1.com/Marydid.html

Merry Christmas! and Peace!

Merry Christmas to all. He is Immanuel. I have a terrible time memorizing scripture but one that I have been working on lately that I think goes with this song, is Titus 2:11-14. “For the Grace of God which brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness & worldly lusts so should live soberly, righteously & godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope & glorious appearance of our great God & Savior Jesus Christ who gave himself for us that He might redeem us from every lawless deed & to purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.” What a day to celebrate His glorious appearance!

Thank you Mart. I had the opportunity to sing the song at church a few years back, and it blessed me so. I never got tired of it no matter how many times we sung it, and practiced. Last night we had a small candle lit service at our chapel here in northern ca, about 20- 30 people, no more. Pastor did a short sermon on what if Joseph wrote a letter home to his mother from Bethelem after the birth of Jesus. Very moving I couldn’t keep the tears from falling. Very relatable to me as both my grown and now married sons had babies before they were married, a very difficult time for all of us. But the Lord is so gracious and compassinate, redeemed both situations – and with a lot of prayer and support we came through it. I saw how the Lord worked in their lives, just as in Joseph and Mary’s life everything went according to God’s unique, difficult and wondorous plan! Finally I’d like to close with this scripture from Luke 2:33-35 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother: This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too…. How wondorous was that?

It certainly is a good question. Did she know? She knew much from the Angel that God sent to her before His birth so she knew enough. The world has been truly blessed by God with the entrance of Himself as Jesus Christ. He has come to save us – Hallelujah. Everyone have a glorious day in spite of the weather. He is the Light of the world for us.

Mart, Do you really know what a blessing you and your family have been? RBC has been such a gentle help to me for many years. I never felt judged. God has used RBC so much in my life and is continuing to do so with this wonderful group of people that meet here. You are all a blessing. Merry Christmas all.

Hi All! I have enjoyed the devotionals and this website for a long time and have felt this would be a good time to jump into the conversations! I never quite understood the strength of a mother’s love until I held my own child in my arms. You only “think” you know what your child will look like or how he/she will act or be. You only “think” you know what life will be like. After singing this song with our church choir, as a mother, I realized that I could only imagine just how powerful Christ’s birth was for Mary. Power in both the known and the unknown (faith). – Mary Kristine

  13. ELP says:

This deeply touches my heart. I have often thought about Mary (ponders in her heart). It had to be overwhelming for her. Breathtaking. But there had to be a great deal of suffering, gossip, funny looks – it wasn’t a happy carefree road for her. Giving birth in a smelly stable, urine soaked hay and surrounded by strangers. We have washed it up, decorated and prettied it all – but it was scary, uncomfortable and definitely out of the ordinary. Yet, she fulfilled her role, did what was necessary, lived life as best she knew and pondered. I ponder too.

  14. pegramsdell says:

Merry Christmas to you all. I hope your Christmas was filled with peace and joy. I pray blessings, comfort and healing on you all and your families. Thanks Mart.

  15. OGramps says:

    Merry christmas to all!

Like MaryKristine I have been reading this blog for some time and I must say that you all are a wonderful group. I find it ironic that in the age of cyberspace that what is going on here is closer to the 1st century Church than many of our “Churches”. My God bless you all with PEACE this season.

  16. gr8grannyjacobs says:

ELP I was so touched by your comment(ponders in her heart). That has been such a verse of comfort for me through the years. I also ponder.

God Bless and Good Morning to All: Merry Christmas, too!

Our traditional family gathering was complete when our daughter flew in from Seattle to Boise about 3pm. She could not join us sooner due to commitments at her home church’s Christmas Eve Services. We are a tight knit family and deeply care for one another. God is Good!
    We celebrated til late last night. (even managed 9 holes of golf on the Wii…lol. What a kick?}

Missed you guys as well. How quickly you have become part of my routine. My Christmas gift all year long. Thanks, Marti, for a gift that keeps on giving.

Still snowing, here and at home in North East Washington. A phone call from a friend last night informed me that he had two feet of fresh powder on top of the 18 inches we had when I left. Guess I have some shoveling to do when I return…wish you could join me LOL.
(poohpity…you invitation sounds veeeeerrry tempting right about now…hee hee)

Mary did you know…has always been a fav of mine. What an irony from Mark Lowry, christian comedian, to have written such a gift. Have you seen his comedy routines? He has such insight into being a pastor’s kid with a mom who played keyboards and monitored his behavior from afar.

As I sit here in the dark before the ‘noise’ begins, I am reminded of sitting in a dimly lit church as a boy waiting to serve as an altar boy. I cherish the quiet times alone with the Lord or a few special friends and ponder in my heart the Wonder of It All.

God Bless You All. Stay Warm and Safe. Cherish!!!

PS Welcome to OGramps, MaryKristine, ELP and others who have joined us.

It’s my all time favorite Christmas song.
Tear’s come to my eyes when I hear it and ponder the words. Very powerful. Kathy Mattea does a beautiful version on her album “Good News”.

  20. dwigpa says:

Mary is held in high esteem by Protestants, but by Catholics prayers are made to her because of her special relationship with Christ and her access to him. Mart, is this Biblical?

  21. poohpity says:

    dwigpa,

I’m not Mart but I am going through some issues with my son and his girlfriend who practices the Catholic religion. If it was him asking this question I would tell him that it is only Christ that has the ability to answer prayer. Mary although being the mother of our Lord is still herself only human although blessed and chosen above all women to bare the son of God. Jesus is our High Priest, Everlasting Father, Mighty Counselor and Prince of Peace. I do not believe that there is anyone of God’s creations that should be held in the place of Christ to be prayed to. That would be like putting a veil over your face to kiss someone you love rather than going flesh to flesh.

  22. cherielyn says:

    dwigpa,

In response to your comment & question: “Mary is held in high esteem by Protestants, but by Catholics prayers are made to her because of her special relationship with Christ and her access to him. Mart, is this Biblical?”…………

I’m not Mart, either, but the Bible gives the answer, very clearly, in I Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”

Notice that it says there is ONE mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. If there had been more than one mediator, i.e. Mary, the Bible would have stated so.

Hope that answers your question to your satisfaction.

  23. Bruce Jantzen says:

The best version of this song I have ever heard is done by a Saskatchewan singer named Brad Johner. If you can manage to find his Christmas cd his version is well worth the effort.
I love the song because it speaks to the closeness we can be to God and of His incredible love for us.
