Israel: The Blessing and the Curse

When God told Abraham that he would bless those who bless him and curse those who curse him, did that mean that God-fearing people would always side with Israel against their enemies? (Gen 12:1-2).

To avoid misquoting, or misapplying, the Bible, it’s important to make sure that we are drawing necessary implications rather than possible or even impossible implications from God’s words to Abraham.

Let me try to quickly show you how I’m trying to think this through.

According to Moses, and basic to the covenant he makes with the people of Israel, if the chosen people followed their God and lived by the laws of his kingdom, he would bless them and curse their enemies. But if they left him and did not keep his commandments then Moses clearly says that the Lord would send upon Israel “cursing, vexation, and rebuke” in all that they did until they were destroyed (Deut 28:20).

The rest of the Old Testament then shows us through the periods of patriarchs, judges, kings, and exile how prophets of God applied the principle of blessings and curses to Israel.

Finally we come to the new covenant that Jesus makes with people of all nations. He teaches his Jewish disciples how to interpret the spirit of the law. Without denying anything the prophets said about God’s last days plan for Israel, he shows the men and women who believe in him that he’s now building a new kind of international kingdom. He calls peacemakers blessed and encourages his followers to endure persecution for his name, and to love their enemies.

But what about the nation of God’s chosen people? How are we to think about them? The Apostle Paul helps us answer that question. As someone who loved both Jewish and gentile people, he explains to us how indebted gentile followers are to the nation of Israel. He, himself, says he’d be willing to be cursed by God if it could mean the salvation of the Jewish people that he loved so dearly (Romans 9:1-5). But then in his very next words he reminds us that, “They are not all Israel, which are of Israel (Rom 9:6).

Paul’s clarification is similar to what he said in the second chapter of the same letter where he wrote, “For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God” (Rom 2:28-29).

From these and other texts of Scripture, here’s what I’m thinking and would like you to test. God fearing people who take the Bible seriously have every reason to pray for the good of Israel and never to desire her harm or destruction. The Scriptures are clear that when Israel finally is enlightened, has a change of heart, and turns back to her God, it will be for the good of the whole world.

But the rest of what I’ve referred to above also leads me to believe that blessing (invoking God’s favor) on Israel, America, or any other nation, is very different from offering undiscerning, unconditional support and approval of all that nation does. If we truly care about an individual, family, or nation we will hope and pray for their well being without approving of their wrongs.

In the meantime, I’m thinking that if we want to be good representatives of Christ we will adopt the impartiality of his love for individuals and families on both sides of any conflict. For now, seems to me that we “adorn the doctrine of Christ” by focusing on issues of justice and mercy, while waiting for God himself to determine how and when he is going to handle the land that he owns, and the nation that still bears his name– but not his heart.

    Mart,
How do we here in the U.S. know whether the nation of Israel is following God or its own selfish wants? I don’t hear much in the press about how Israel is going about deciding its actions. Do they praise God or follow their rituals instead of listening to Him? Do they use prophesy as there right or God’s will as the standard for the actions they take? Does the Knesset pray before it meets? Does the premier ask for God’s guidance before he decides? Aren’t these the measure of a nation’s loyalty? I suppose I could do a web search to answer these questions, but I’d still be interested in your answers since you have been there several times and have more direct experience with the people of Israel. Well, these are the thoughts I had when I read your post.
Thanks for the opportunity to think these things out.

Hey Mart, I am not an expert on international affairs. Your essay today is a bit hard for me to understand. Your writing initiates me to think about weighing actions over individuals. I guess I am going to have to revert to my foundation, Love God and love your neighbor. Thanks for your weekly devotion to writing.

Mart as usual you say something and I truly do not know what side you are taking. I do not think God’s blessing of those who “bless” Israel is no longer valid. In Numbers 22 where Israel is wandering in the wilderness, they were not following God then as a nation, thus wandering in the wilderness. Yet when Balak sends for Balaam to curse the children what was God’s response to Balaam “Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for the are blessed” (Num. 22:12) God is not done with His people and will not be, the tribulation that will and is to come is basically God dealing with His people to bring them back. Yes we are to love our ‘enemies’, but I believe scripture also commands us to ‘bless’ Israel. We know that there is a remnant of His people who will go into the Kingdom age. I believe it only right to stand by God’s people, they are and always will be a part of His plan. “At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you; for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.” (Zep.3:20). Is Israel in rebellion to God? Yes! Is Israel still the chosen people of God? Yes, and always will be. Were all nations blessed by God through the nation of Israel? Yes, through the blood of the Lamb. Does God still have a plan for His chosen people? Yes! Do we need to stand behind God’s people? Yes.

I think chfranke asked the same questions I have. Is Israel a nation that is following God? Is all this war against Israel God’s way of getting her to turn back to God?

I believe that it is important the the USA continues to back Israel. If we don’t I feel God will bless us less. I might be wrong on that, but I feel we can never turn our back on her.

  5. BruceC says:

Very deep question. Not an easy one to answer. As an ally of Israel; just as in a personal relationship, we may rebuke Israel for something it may have done wrongly but to curse and vex is a whole other matter. Neither would indicate friendship. I am really amazed at all the anti-Israel rhetoric out there lately. The other night on the news they showed people(apparently Muslims) protesting against the US and Israel. A female from the crowd shouted “Back into the ovens!”. Haven’t heard talk like that since the Klan rallies in the sixties. I am hearing more talk about what Israel is doing than what Hamas has done and is doing. Would anyone like to live in a land that has had over 5,000 missle and rockets fired upon it on the last couple of years? Especially considering a “cease-fire’ was agreed on and Israel gave up land for peace? I am not saying Israel can do no wrong. But look at what the allies had to do in WWII to defeat evil aggression.
    chfranke,
I think I know where you are coming from but let me draw a comparison. We open Congress with a prayer, the name of God is on our money and in our pledge. In fact publically He is mentioned quite often; and too many times for expediency. And yet our nation slauagthers million of babies in their mothers wombs, sides at times with atheists in court rulings, and allows “sin products” to be sold just because they can tax them. And yet we ask God’s blessing. Israel, like all the nations of the earth is secular in most part.
While we as followers of Christ do not applaude suffering and we should be concerned for the innocent lives lost and those left wounded and maimed, we also need to take a stand against aggression and evil. The “trick” is, how is that balancing act done?

  6. gr8grannyjacobs says:

I have deep feelings for Israel, who cannot, that knows our Lord. I have deep feelings for America, being a native. Without condemnation I don’t see either of the two as being Godly nations. They profess God…..and live as though He does not exist. For me God has always wanted the hearts of all men regardless of the nation they came from. He wanted Israel to be an example of what He could do for a people who followed Him with all their heart. They failed to be that as a nation, and yet there were some who touched God’s heart .Genesis thru Revelations,we see examples of the men and women God was able to use as examples of what He wanted in the heart of man. Love God and love one another. If a nation as a whole could follow that one command, what a difference! God will give us that nation when He returns. That is my hope and why I share Him with as many as He puts in my path. Maybe I make it all seem simple,as I am a very simple person, but with the heart of a child….

  7. pegramsdell says:

I found this scripture. I thought it may be applicable.

    Psalm 122
A song of ascents. Of David.
1 I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the LORD.”
    2 Our feet are standing
    in your gates, O Jerusalem.

3 Jerusalem is built like a city
    that is closely compacted together.

4 That is where the tribes go up,
    the tribes of the LORD,
to praise the name of the LORD
according to the statute given to Israel.

5 There the thrones for judgment stand,
the thrones of the house of David.

6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure.

7 May there be peace within your walls
    and security within your citadels.”

8 For the sake of my brothers and friends,
I will say, “Peace be within you.”

9 For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
    I will seek your prosperity.

  8. Mart De Haan says:

chfranke, while many of us believe the return of Israel to their ancient homeland is biblically significant, I don’t know of any one who sees Israel as being spiritually restored. (With thanks for DMG’s comment below, it’s important for me to clarify that I mean I don’t know of anyone who would argue that Israel is presently existing as a spiritually restored nation).

Zionism was and is largely an atheistic movement (even allowing for the fact that many Christians have no problem identifying with the movement). And while Israeli friends have told me that after the amazing events of the war of 1967, God was on the lips of “every Jewish citizen,” those same persons have told me how quickly the nation forgets its God.

Some Orthodox communities in Israel do not even recognize the present nation of Israel which they believe will not bear God’s approval until Messiah comes. The groups don’t vote or serve in the Israeli military, have little in common with followers of Christ, and tend to be very resentful of “missionaries” who to talk “Jesus” to their children.

My fear is that many of us have adopted what is basically a political and nationalistic view of an economic and military ally that bears little resemblance to the biblical view of Israel.

  9. bowajvs45 says:

    Mart,

Yes you are right in bring reference as to who is the right Jew or Israel. But one thing is needful is what Jesus told to Mary. That is to sit down in humility and become poor in spirit. Humility is the New Covenant life in Christ. Such person pray for peace all over the world concluding “let your will be done”. When one becomes poor in spirit and humble he prays for his enemies that their eyes of the heart to open and takes every word of God seriously. In Psalm 122:6 “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Zion). One may also say this refers as New Covenant Church, so may pray for the universal Church where each one truly follow the Lamb. Rev.14:4

  10. OGramps says:

    Good morning Mart,

As I was reading posting I couldn’t help but think about Paul’s teaching that in Christ there is no more Jew or Gentile, bond or free. And so (I am so simple sometimes) I wonder if what you are thinking about can be related just as we all do with the family of Christ, or even our own family for that matter. We can’t help but love our family members, even when they are in the wrong. We pray for them, bless them and ask for God’s blessing and try to help them as much as we can, but that does not always mean that we approve of their actions.

As for the blessings and cursings, that’s a mighty big question. The only thing I could offer is what I see that throughout history, ancient and modern, when a nation truely humbles themselves and seeks God He responds.

  11. DebbieS says:

As a Jewish believer in Christ of 30 years, I cannot help but continue to be surprised that so many of my brothers and sisters do not see the obvious. That is,Israel’s continued existence as a nation makes no sense without the explanation of God’s Hand of protection on them. As a people and as a nation they should have ceased to exist years ago according to the exterminations and wars that have been waged against them. All of the other New Testament tribes, while still having their individual descendants, no longer exist as individual nations.
It is absolutely true that the secular Israeli government does not make all the “holy, upright” decisions, but neither do I each day nor does any Christian I know..yet within God’s decreed will, He still blesses and keeps me and did keep me for Himself BEFORE I was saved.
God still has a purpose in Israel’s continuing nationhood or they simply would cease to exist. Any other explanation is simply called ‘replacement theology’. Don’t write Israel off – God is faithful and He remembers the covenants He made with Abraham and David. Watch and see…history is not over yet.
“Brothers, my heart’s prayer for them is that they might be saved”. Romans 10:1

  12. SFDBWV says:

I am so very pleased to see more participation, I am happy to be a part of a growing number of Christian Activists.

Apart from faith, apart from religious beliefs, without any concious influence from scripture. Israel is a friend to my country, in the middle of enemies to my country. She then is an ally to my country. And so to me.

It goes against every instinct in my being to consider myself anything other than a friend to Israel.

As a Christian my first responsibility is to Jesus. That means I try to be Christ like. Jesus is a Jew. He followed every Jewish custom and fulfilled the law of Moses. Jesus is the embodyment of what it means to be the Jew as God intended them to be. That doesn’t also mean that I am to become a Jew. But I am adopted into the Family.

The absolutes of either cursing or blessing are immpossible. I as a Christian am not to curse any but ask the blessings for all.

That doesn’t mean I ask God’s blessings for murders and terrorists. No I ask God to change their hearts into lovers of peace and lovers of their fellow man. I pray for them.

Israel isn’t the agressor. Her enemies are, and they will not rest until they see her utter destruction.

Should we then stand back and expect God to protect Israel from unrelenting attacks from evil men? Stating that God is the only protector of Israel and so we will just back off and let him be so?

God IS the protector of these chosen people and the author of Israels boundries.

If we place ourselves in any posture other than the friend to Israel we stand against God.

It is wrong to try and broker peace between Israel and her Muslim enemies by continuing to make Israel cede land and give in to terrorist threats. Wrong!

We here in the USA have ceded Christ from every public institution as a way of making peace with a disenting opinion. The consequence has been disastrous.

  13. Grace Wrks says:

    Brother Mart – Amen.

  14. joe says:

rdrcomp wrote that she tought she was unable to be accursed for Israel: “but that like Paul, love Israel to the point that (I can’t do this!!) we could wish ourselves accursed for them.”

America IS accursed for Israel. So, rdrcomp, if you are an American, you are collectively accursed for Israel. You have ‘done it’.

  15. macsisson22 says:

But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which spitefully use you, and persecute you (Matt. 5:44(,

I personally support Israel and its current actions but have to ask, since when did it become our job to decide who’s to blame or whom to bless?

  16. Mart De Haan says:

There is so much to sort through on this subject. On one hand we need to distinguish between (1) what God has said in the Bible, (2)what he now may or may not be doing in Israel, and (3) the unjustifiable human factors of violence and deception that keep showing up on both sides of the present conflict.

I’m convinced that a reasonably “literal” reading of the Bible indicates that God will ultimately not only bring a remnant of national Israel to their knees, but that he will also use Israel to bring a remnant of the world to its knees at the end of this age.

But this is another place we need to be so careful. Both Old and New Testaments teach the people of God to be advocates for justice and mercy in matters that can be humanly considered and acted upon. In that regard I believe it is essential that followers of Christ give both Israelis and Palestinians reason to believe that, whether they agree with our spiritual views or not, we are being considerate of them and their grievances.

In that regard, a few years ago, someone showed me a paper on the internet that provides a perspective that many friends of Israel have not considered. It’s written by a group called “Jews for Justice in the Middle East” and is called “The Origin of the Palistine-Israel Conflict.” If you have time, and are inclined to read it, I think it could be a way of honoring the Biblical proverb that reminds us that “the first one to give testimony in a court of law always sounds right until their adversary is given a chance to tell their side of the issue.” (Prov18:17)

In no way am I advocating anything other than to be able to show our selves good representatives of our Lord.

  17. poohpity says:

Like anything else we are not called to be the Holy Spirit of anyone’s heart. The heart is reflected in actions. Only God knows someone’s heart and whether they believe. We (that means all believers from every nation)are called to spread the Good News and to help the poor and destitute.

God has known the heart of Israel since it’s beginning. God knows the heart of every person not land mass. I guess what I’m trying to say is only God knows what it is going to take in each individuals life to bring one to their knees. As believers we have been given a job that is to reflect His care to others. We can look at the outside of anything and come to a judgment but only God is in the heart business. He will bring about His will in every nation and in every heart. It is now as it has always been God does different things to get people to recognize Him as God over ALL creation. We still need to be looking to Him not to any military, political or monetary solution.

It is God who breaks down and builds up and we may not understand all His ways but He knows what is best for ALL sides in any arena. He will use whatever means He deems necessary to get people to call to Him. To love God is the ultimate goal and it always has been.

  18. DebbieS says:

Thank you thank you thank you to all of you who love Israel and the Jewish people on behalf of our Lord!
The very best way to bring peace to the land and the people is to evangelize the Arab/Muslim people and the Jewish people. Bring them the Word of God and the truth of their salvation in Jesus Christ!

  19. gr8grannyjacobs says:

My great grandmother did not live to see the restoration of Israel. She however taught my grandmother about Christ and carried the gospel on to another generation. My grandmother did see Israel restored as a nation. She taught me about Christ and carried the gospel message on to another generation They both knew the Bible and they both knew about Israel. They must have had different views .I wish I had known to ask my grandmother, what her views were. My point is that hearing the gospel message is what eventually opened my heart .I know the gospel message and I have shared that message with my children and my grandchildren and will with my great grandchildren as soon as they are of age to understand. Three generations. I know Israel is the land and people which God chose .I support that biblical belief and know that God will restore Israel. I don’t know if He has done that yet. He has allowed man to make Israel a nation again.Has it become a nation that glorifies God? However, I look at Israel, its the message that God sent through His Son through the Jewish nation that I try to proclaim. God will take care of Israel. Just a thought.

  20. Abate says:

I tend to agree with DebbiS. God is faithful and will be with Israel.

However, no one comes to the Father except through Jesus Christ (John 14:6 and as mentioned by Mart Paul’s desire for Israel). Moreover, God is also just and will discipline. We pray for Israel as a nation and individual Jews and also Palestinians individual salvation – “For God so loved the world….”!

  21. Cantata12 says:

I love Israel, pray and support her.

God has not replaced the Church for Israel as some tend to believe. God has a covenant with the land and the descendant of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

War is awful, no one likes war, however, why the population of the Palestinians hides those terrorists in their villages, schools, hospital? Why don’t they expel them? I feel sad for the women and children.Have you considered that those rebels use the children and women to fuel their hatred against Israel?

Yes we are to love our enemies. We need God’s discernment and wisdom to separate the person from their actions, and pray that they would have a Damascus experience.

    As Christians we are to;

    1 Cr 10:32
Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:

  22. wretch-like-me says:

Marti: Excellent topic and exegesis. Lots to consider and too often we skim over the high points without digging deeper for the ‘meat’ of the text.

DebbieS: You are soooo right about God sparing Israel as a Nation and preserving ‘her’ when all others have fallen and disappeared.

Our Great and Loving God stays his hand of judgement and damnation til the last soul is won. That is why I believe He is demonstrating His Love for Israel by allowing time for 144,000 Jews to convert to Christianity following the Rapture during 7 years of Tribulation. God truly loves His Chosen People as a Merciful Father loves His Children and risks looking foolish to redeem them (parable of the prodigal).

Would it not be simple to bring down fire and brimstone immediately following the Rapture?

Pooh: I think I agree with the spirit of your comment but just want to clarify your statement “He(God)will bring about His will in every nation and in every heart.” Scripture says that God’s Will is that none should perish… however, people have Free Will to choose their own destiny and sadly many(if not the majority) will choose unwisely(damnation).

Fact is Fact. “Many are called; but, few will respond!”

greetings and welcome to all who have posted today!!!

Pray also for the folks in Washington State, my home, where flooding has been declared a ‘state of emergency’.

  23. daisymarygoldr says:

Mart, I agree with most of what you have written on this painful topic. Also, agree about loving both sides of the conflict. However, these are my thoughts in response to the following statements in your 2nd and 3rd posts:

    1. “I don’t know of any one who sees Israel as being spiritually restored”.
I do believe in the spiritual restoration of literal Israel because the Bible says in Romans 11 that “…all Israel will be saved. …they are still the people He loves because He chose their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

    2. “In no way am I advocating anything other than to be able to show our selves good representatives of our Lord”.
My question is: How do we show ourselves as good representatives of the Lord? Should we advocate Israel to stop defending herself? Is it by stopping the war which the Lord is fighting on her behalf?

…in my humble opinion, if God moves the hearts of nations or people to help Israel, it is a blessing to obey…otherwise, its best to leave her alone. Israel (not Palestine) is God’s showcase to the world and is an example to each one of us who believe in Him…so that we “…stay alert to these qualities of gentle kindness and ruthless severity that exist side by side in God…” (Rom 11: 22-23). If God will not spiritually restore Israel, is there any hope for us who constantly rebel to turn away from Him?

“For since their rejection meant that God offered salvation to the rest of the world, their acceptance will be even more wonderful. It will be life for those who were dead” (Rom 11:15)!

Aside: I thought you always championed for grace…why are you so quick to give up on Israel?

  24. Mart De Haan says:

daisymarygoldr, thank you for responding. I obviously was unclear in what I wrote. I meant to say that I don’t know of anyone who would argue that Israel is presently existing as a spiritually restored nation. I definitely believe as you do that the Scriptures teach Israel’s physical and spiritual restoration to their King and Messiah at some point in the future.

On your second point, I believe all nations, including Israel, have a responsibility to defend themselves against attack.

At the same time, history repeatedly shows that when the poor of a nation lose hope to the point of taking desperate, self-destructive, and violent measures, it is often because of extreme social deprivations that have gone for too long unanswered…

  25. chfranke says:

    Mart,
You referred to the Jews for Justice website earlier which I have gone to and read 1/2 of the “Origin of the Palestine-Israel Conflict” booklet (you’re right, it is a long read). I will finish it later, but I’ve read enough to realize that (as the website says) “Palestinians have a real grievance: their homeland for over a thousand years was taken, without their consent and mostly by force, during the creation of the state of Israel. And all subsequent crimes — on both sides — inevitably follow from this original injustice.”
I never knew this side of the story even though I’ve lived through the whole birth of the state of Israel. This is stuff we have to know in order to carry on an intelligent conversation about the will of God and fullfilment of prophesy.
In light of this new information I need to re-think my stance on supporting Israel.
So I’m going to shut up now until I do some more reading and thinking.
Thank you all for your comments and statements.
    Chuck

  26. daisymarygoldr says:

Mart, always wish you would end it like this…with “and they lived happily ever after…” You just made my day… Thank you!

  27. carlj says:

To put our arms around the passage in Genesis 12:3 is difficult and challenging. Because of that verse we as Believers might be unsure in regards to our position towards the state of Israel. It is as though we can only see the state of Israel through that verse and perhaps it can be blinding to a degree. We certainly don’t want to get on the wrong side of God by taking a questionable position so we may choose to play it safe by favoring the state of Israel. If we were able to fully understand God’s purpose of that verse for us Believers today, perhaps we could have a better feel for what our position should be toward the current activities.

  28. poohpity says:

    w-l-m,

I know people have free will and can choose to believe but inevitably every single person no matter what their knees will bow before God at judgment time. So God’s will is for everyone to know He is God. Romans 14:10-12; Philippians 2:9-11. So whether they are saved or not they will bow those knees someway or other.

  29. Cantata12 says:

The real issue here is. That Israel is being criticized.

From my understanding, they are defending themselves against being rocketed by the minute from the dwellers of Gaza, who took their land, beside.

Excuse me, Mart, would you suggest another alternative?

Perhaps you have the answer. I read from Scripture that every Nation or people who God used to chastize or judge His people, in the end they were judged and severely.

I do sympatize with the innocent, like women and children, however, I have no sympaty for the oppressors, in this case those who have set their hearts on destroying Israel.

It will not happen, we read the end of the Book.

    Respectfully.

  30. sitsathisfeet says:

It’s hard for me to weigh in on such a weighty subject as this. But here goes. As far as I can tell God is to do the blessing and the cursing. We are to pray for people on all sides to come to know the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. And when the new Jerusalem comes down out of heaven from God (Rev 21:2) there will be a new heaven and earth, the first heaven and earth will have passed away. Now it doesn’t say a new Israel, or all the jewish people – it says those whose names are written in the book of life. Everything will pass away, including the old covenants, and the new covenant will be forever established in Jesus Christ. This includes our Israeli and Palestinian neighbors. In 2 Cor 13-16 it says whenever the old covenant is read, a veil still covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. This tells me we shouldn’t depend on the old covenant any longer, but on the new covenant which is in Christ Jesus. Will God honor his promises to bless Israel, most assuredly. But, my concern should be to live under the new covenant, following Jesus Christ and praying for more to be saved.

  31. SFDBWV says:

Just wanted to add another twist to this topic.

Here in the United States our Christian forefathers, declared Manifest Destiny and forged a United Nation from coast to coast.

In doing so, the people who were already here fell victum to the settling of America. American “Indians” of every tribe of every tongue of every native religion. Were put on reservations and forced to change their culture, their language, and yes their religion.

If they even now attempted to take back tribal lands by armed rebellion. What would Our responce be? Yes I think we all know.

There is NO excuse for the attacks of violence against Israel by claiming Arabs too were here for a thousand years.
By blending into the fabric of the Nation of Israel they too can prosper as a people, One People in a shared homeland. Not a divided Homeland.

  32. violet D says:

I’ve followed this discussion with great interest and find I still struggle with how to respond. As many respondents have noted – war is horrible. I grew up in England during WW 11 and have visited the war cemeteries in France so am painfully aware of how many ‘innocent’ people die as a result. I totally agree with all those who point out that the future of this current conflict is in God’s hands. I just read Matthew 10:5 – 32 – in v.34 Jesus states “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.” I honestly think the earth will not know “peace” until Jesus returns so I must do His will to the best of my abililty as long as He gives me breath.

I don’t believe any one commenting is too eccentric with their perspective on Israel. Believers see Israel through God’s eyes (not human), as his chosen people. The Spirit moves us with compassion for the peace of Jerusalem and the restoration of Israel.

However, I would like to point out a few observations for every one’s consideration.

    (1) When visiting Israel in the early 1990’s we (my wife and I) were allowed to enter the two Mosques on the Temple site. Upon entering the lesser know Mosque, El Aqsa, my wife and I noticed ‘bumper stickers’ written in Arabic on one of the support columns. A kind Muslim man read the signs for us in perfect English. They said (and I paraphrase) Resist Israel with all means available, social, military, economic, never submit, etc.

    (2) What I say next I believe most people acknowledge to some degree – but not to a great enough degree. That is, we can not, for even a moment, trust what we see on the major networks (Fox included). I have seen Jewish websites dedicated to Truth in Journalism demonstrate how routinely the International Media manipulated and destorts the news, especially images. We the Sheople of the United States are led like sheep by our media.

    (3) “What about the USA?” I am a patriot that served in the USMC. A few months ago I begin a paradigm shift that has rocked me to my foundation – (Faith alone in Christ Alone)that alone standing.

It all begin with my outrage on the Bail-Out. This led me (through a bizarre turn) into investigating the FACTS behind 9/11 at stj911.org. This is a website where many scholars (including Physicist,Engineers, ex-miliary officers, high level government officials) have refuted the official 911 Commission report (repeatedly) demonstrating that the twin towers (and building 7) could not have collapsed in free-fall from being struck by planes. These patriots have scientifically demonstrated that thermate was used to ‘raze’ the buildings. They have demonstrated that evidence does not match (even remotely) the story from NIST (the USGOV investigating agency).

Why mention this? Justice and Truth must begin HERE. We can’t see clearly to judge any people for what their Government does without first looking at ourselves. World events are far more complex than what Fox and CNN would have you know. The USA is engaged in an unjust war based upon an illusion that took place on 9/11/01 that has led to the murder of US Military personnel and Foreign personnel based on the events of 9/11 where the FACTS are HIGHLY DISPUTED on Scientific Grounds. I’ll leave off discussing this & encourage all to review the evidence for yourselves.

Why? Globalization – As a believer you KNOW Globalization is on the prophetic path toward the 10 horned Beast of Daniel and Revelation.

Question EVERYTHING! Believe in the Absolute Truth of God’s Written Word – nothing else can be trusted.

    NatusNemo,

Your thoughts are interesting but as a person who lived next to some of the associates of the pilots of 9/11 and watched the planning first hand for almost a year and a half prior to the occurrence some of your thoughts are a little radical. Some of the information that has been discussed on web sites as to the pliability of what you are suggesting may need to be researched a little more by you finding out the back ground of who the writers are associated with and note some of the people who have refuted those claims.

Truth sometimes is bent according to ones biases. For those who sincerely seek the truth it will find it.

chfranke, as acknowledged before, I greatly appreciate the scriptural observations you contribute to this blog. In your comment “In light of this new information I need to re-think my stance on supporting Israel”, what is this new information… that you did not know before? That the Land originally belonged to the Palestinians?
I’m sure you’ll agree that the Bible is the best God-given resource for any intelligent conversation about the will of God and fulfillment of prophesy. So, while you are deciding to change sides I sincerely urge you to reconsider what God had to say about the land “The land must never be sold on a permanent basis, for the land is mine…” (Lev 25:23).

Mart, Here’s one for you to think about:

“The quality of mercy is not strain’d,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.”

So, how should we respond to this: “When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are about to enter and occupy, He will clear away many nations ahead of you…You must destroy all the nations the LORD your God hands over to you. Show them no mercy…” Deut7:1, 16… in the light of Eph. 6:10-12?

Cantata12, we do feel the burden of your heart…be comforted in knowing that “The day is coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah…I will be their God, and they will be my people…” (Heb 8: 8,10). He will not destroy Israel and He will not destroy anyone who believes in His name for, we serve a covenant-keeping God whose promises never fail!

Gr8grannyjacobs, you always get it right:) God will take care of Israel!

I also wonder if there is a reminder to us as Believers in the midst of the mid-East conflict to be sensitive to God’s timing. Perhaps, a number of Jews (Zionists) feeling a pull to re-establish the state of Israel became overzealous in their hearts and as a result have mishandled some affairs. I am placing my thought against the backdrop of Moses working outside of God’s timing when he began to feel the call to deliver Israel from Egypt, and also of the zealots who wanted to press Jesus into delivering Israel from the Romans. When we begin to feel a desire, or a small kindling, in our heart is that the time to wait for further instructions? I am personally learning to wait on God’s timing and not be so impulsive.

  37. poohpity says:

    Amen carlj!

  38. NatusNemo says:

Poohpity – If I understand you correctly you are saying you lived next door to associates of the pilots (or terrorist?) that flew the planes & that they planned this for 1-1/2 years?

I Don’t deny that, nor do I deny that terrorist flew planes into the WTC. I’m not sure what your point is to me?

Perhaps you’ve misunderstood me. The scientific evidence can not support the planes as the cause of complete collapse of the WTC. Physics simply doesn’t allow this explanation – That’s fact, not speculation. Visit STJ911.org – Review the evidence yourself. Thermate charges were used to bring down the buildings. The implications are un-mistakable.

  39. poohpity says:

My point to you is we never really know what happens behind the scenes. If the government told us everything all the time I think some would be very upset. My other point is that the articles that you spoke of were never proven to be correct, just some thoughts. I read those articles many years ago and found no truth to them and what difference does that make anyway it can not change anything that has happened.

  40. poohpity says:

It was not only planned for 1 1/2 years these young men had been here since high school and they were now in their twenties. They received funds from what they called family in Saudi. The money was sent every month to attend flight school maintain an apartment and for entertainment. If their grades for flight school were not maintained the money was not sent. They changed apartments every six months to a different location. I asked if they were going to be pilots back home and they said yes for commercial airlines. I can not begin to tell you all that went on but after 9/11 the gut feeling I had about them was right on. After 9/11 the news said there were cells all over the US and probably still are. These kids were raised here and had school VISA’s so they were to learn the customs here to fit into society although they had their little meetings with their own customs. It was very scary after what happened then seeing his name on the news. So the only conspiracy was not from our own but from the middle east. That is why I say you never know but we can not live in fear.

  41. Godsglory says:

    Titus 2:12-15
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

  42. Karla Elisa says:

Israel was created thanks to the behind the scenes workings of terrorists in the Irgun and Stearns gang. They are Political Zionists. Political Zionism simply does not go hand in hand with Spiritual Zionism, or Judaism for that matter.

So absolutely, I do not see Israel as being anywhere near ‘spiritually’ restored. Historically God has made examples of the Jews and it seems whenever they become arrogant and turn from him, they suffer and suffer big.

Now…. let’s say we are supposed to ‘bless’ them. Does this mean we do it by giving them huge amounts of money and weapons each year so they can commit what appears to be genocide? In what way are we helping them BECOME a spiritual Israel?

They are a nation bent on military superiority and most certainly were behind the push to for us to invade Iraq. They are itching to tear it up with Iran if we won’t by proxy. They refuse to return to pre 67 borders and vacate the illegal settlements.

They spy on us, run our Government, our media, our entertainment industry, our financial institutions, our colleges….and we seem to support them right or wrong, lest we be accused of anti semitism. Try to criticize Israel in any Church….you get shushed pretty quickly.

I have learned through Christ that only light can drive out the dark. Do any of you see Israel as the beacon of light on the hill? An example of moral or spiritual purity that would reflect Godliness?

I don’t. I see a defensive, angry, aggressive nation (that BY THE WAY BROKE THE CEASEFIRE FIRST) who has backed a desperate people into a corner and trapped them. Of course they are going to fight back however they can.

I have SO many questions about how I am supposed to view Israel. And my heart goes out to the Palestinians suffering in that cage called Gaza.

Does anybody else feel torn about this?

  43. Hephzibah610 says:

Oh…wow…how can one not feel “torn” in some form? I appreciate the scriptural responses to this.

I have always seen Israel as “picture” (snapshot) of humanity. God’s faithfulness to her reflects His faithfulness to all of us. Her waywardness is a reflection of our own. His mercy toward her is the same as His mercy toward us. I pray that He never removes His mercy from her…for that would show me that I too could be removed from His mercy. (see Rom.11:18-20)

Yes, I pray for the peace of Jerusalem…I bless her. For in her blessing I will find my own. Let us not be wise in our own eyes but fear the ONE who rules!!!

Rom.11:15 NAS For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead ?
    16. If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also ; and if the root is holy, the branches are too.
    17. But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree,
    18. do not be arrogant toward the branches ; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you.
    19. You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”
    20. Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited , but fear ;
    21. for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either.
    22. Behold then the kindness and severity of God ; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness ; otherwise you also will be cut off.
    23. And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.
    24. For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree ?
    25. For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery -so that you will not be wise in your own estimation -that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in;
    26. and so all Israel will be saved ; just as it is written, “THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB.”
    27. “THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS.”
    28. From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God’s choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers ;
    29. for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
    30. For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience,
    31. so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy.
    32. For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.
    33. Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God ! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways !
    34. For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, OR WHO BECAME HIS COUNSELOR ?
    35. Or WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM THAT IT MIGHT BE PAID BACK TO HIM AGAIN ?
    36. For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.

Ps122:6NAS. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem : “May they prosper who love you.
    7. “May peace be within your walls, And prosperity within your palaces.”
    8. For the sake of my brothers and my friends, I will now say, “May peace be within you.” 9. For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your good.

    Gen.12:1NAS. Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you;
    2. And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great ; And so you shall be a blessing ;3. And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
