Some events help us reflect on the bigger story of our lives.
The heroic actions of ”Sully”, a veteran pilot who safely landed 155 passengers of an Airbus A320 on the frigid waters of the Hudson River… after being brought down by a flock of birds… is one of those events.
The rescue of US Airways 1549 is an example of how everything can suddenly go wrong, before what witnesses can’t help calling a miracle.
Am guessing every generation has one or more of those moments. An unforeseen event brings together previously unrelated people, to discover together the wonder of what they’ve never seen before–in one another — and the hint of things far greater.
Reminds me of something that a jaded, disillusioned, leader of Israel once discovered. In the desperate fog of confusion, after chasing pleasures that had almost destroyed him, and after declaring his his own life meaningless, empty, and senseless, he had a moment of extreme clarity. As Solomon reflected on normal unavoidable, grinding routines of life, he wrote, “God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end” (Ecc 3:11).
Sometimes, in unexpected moments, we see a reflection of what the most irreligious among us calls “a miracle.” And in that unguarded moment, maybe we have caught a glimpse of what will soon be overwhelmingly clear to all of us…
