Miracle on the Hudson

Some events help us reflect on the bigger story of our lives.

The heroic actions of ”Sully”, a veteran pilot who safely landed 155 passengers of an Airbus A320 on the frigid waters of the Hudson River… after being brought down by a flock of birds… is one of those events.

The rescue of  US Airways 1549 is an example of how everything can suddenly go wrong, before what witnesses can’t help calling a miracle.

Am guessing every generation has one or more of those moments. An unforeseen event brings together previously unrelated people, to discover together the wonder of what they’ve never seen before–in one another — and the hint of things far greater.

Reminds me of something that a jaded, disillusioned, leader of Israel once discovered. In the desperate fog of confusion, after chasing pleasures that had almost destroyed him, and after declaring his his own life meaningless, empty, and senseless, he had a moment of extreme clarity. As Solomon reflected on normal unavoidable, grinding routines of life, he wrote, “God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end” (Ecc 3:11).

Sometimes, in unexpected moments, we see a reflection of what the most irreligious among us calls “a miracle.” And in that unguarded moment, maybe we have caught a glimpse of what will soon be overwhelmingly clear to all of us…

I am always intrigued by situations like the plane crash yesterday or 911 and how people react. I listened to news reports how people from the ferry pitched in to participate in the rescue. I don’t understand it but God designed us to work best when we are involved in relationships. Unfortunately, it is crisis that reminds us of this. We are at our best when we are serving others and compassionate towards others.

This incident made me think also. I was impressed by the fast action of the rescuers and how they worked together so seamlessly. The way we as a church should, trying to rescue people from the traps of satan. The skill and bravery of the pilot to land an aircraft so large on the frigid water and at such a speed; all the while keeping calm and being last man out after checking the aircraft. Sort of what like Jesus did for us.
I hope that this incident and the adjective “miracle” will get some people to contemplate eternity and God and draw them to Christ. I also found it amazing that something as simple as Canada geese could bring down such a technological wonder of man showing again that we are neither as smart or as powerful as we may like to think.
The miraculous is all around us; we just need to open our eyes and see.

I am so relieved that they landed in the water. Great thinking of the pilot. Thank You Jesus they survived. With “bad news” going on all around us, it’s good to see “good news” for a change. I agree BruceC about the geese. Amazing.

As a Canadian, I apologize for sending the geese down there to cause such an accident. I’m just waiting for SNL to do a spoof on this incident — about it being a terrorist attack from Canada or something. Poor geese — they were smart enough to leave here for the winter, but they must be confused by how cold it is down there. According to all the temperature comments yesterday, it sounds like even Florida is too cold for them.

Although I’m sure those temps seem very cold to y’all, you probably can’t imagine cold as we’ve had it here this past month, especially this past week. We have gone beyond where Celsius and Fahrenheit even out (-40 degrees). With the windchill factored in, we have even been below -50 degrees! However, things are looking up. The temperature is supposed to start rising today, and may even hit 0 degrees Celsius on the weekend.

So once again, Canadian apologies to you for the geese, and for the cold weather we have sent you.

More seriously, I too watched in amazement as the miracle on the Hudson unfolded (Yes, in spite of -50, our TVs and Internet still work!). It was interesting to hear the comments from the passengers about their prayers as the pilot told them to brace themselves and they prepared to land in the river. I’m guessing that there were no atheists on board in those moments. Nor should there be any among all who viewed the wonderful hand of God’s protection. I agree that it is refreshing to have a little good news like this.

YEAH BRUCE, SIMPLE CANADA GEESE, I AGREE TOO. GOD SHOWS AGAIN AND AGAIN HOW VULNERABLE WE ARE, WE MAY SAY LIKE TITANIC DESIGNER, NEITHER GOD CAN SINK THIS SHIP! AND GOD ANSWERS NOT TO DEFENSE HIS SELF, BUT TO DEFENSE OURSELVES FROM OUR THOUGHTS OF PROUD. BRINGING BACK OUR MIND TO OUR DEPENDENCE OF HIM. TODAY, ABOUT 1:30 AM I JUST FINISHED A WORK AND TOOK A LOOK AROUND HERE, FINDING ABOUT THAT PLANE, AND SEE ALL THOSE PEOPLE STANDING IN THE WINGS OF THE PLANE, LIKE THE VERSES OF PSALM 91 IN TWO WAYS:
4 He shall cover you with His feathers,
    And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
    -HERE IS UNDER.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

HOPE WE, AND THEM BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE WE HAVE A NEW CHANCE EVERY DAY IN HIS MERCY, SOME TO OPEN THE HEART TO HIS WORD, SOME TO GROW IN HIS WORD BEING CLEANED.
    THANK YOU MART. G.B.Y.

Deborah – know you are in my prayers, also.
Sawaybon – glad to know I am NOT the only Canadian here :) and join you in apologizing for “our” geese :)
In reference to the ‘miracle’ – God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform ….

I Thank God for what He has shown us. He is awsome, and there is none like Him. The people on that plane will never forget that experience they had. They need to share with others about what God has done. It is good to know that everyone on that plan was “SAVED” that was saved. If not they will be.

In order to see miracles of God we must be looking with spiritual eyes. One day a friend said to me I just don’t see any modern miracles by God, and I pondered a response. I began by saying the miracles in the new testament done by Jesus were special for his time, but I truly believe God is working his miracles everyday. Another friend said I think about so many times I should have been in an accident, and I wasn’t, but by the grace of God I was not. Think of the atom, and the way it is held together we do not understand, yet God holds it together so everything can exsist. God is saving, restraining, upholding everyday, miracles that often we fail to acknowledge – even those of us with spiritual eyes to see. I thank God today for his miracles, the miracle of creation, the miracle of life, even eternal life, for Jesus christ and the Holy Spirit. God is our miracle, from which all miracles and good comes! Amen?!

    Happy,
You said it all when you said, “I wish so much I could just get out of God’s way and let Him live His life through me”. We try so hard to control situations to how we think they should be and this story shows how God is preparing in advance each individual for the work He (God) has for them to do. It seems that through out history as seen in the bible and in secular (so we think) history, how God prepared people in advance to accomplish His will. Breathe taking isn’t it.

To consider we are placed in the circumstances in life to be where God wants us at the time when He will USe us. We are groomed from birth and He saw before what we would do and how if we choose to be in a place where we are God’s hands, feet and mind.

  12. drkennyg says:

Yes it was truly amazing how that potential tragedy was so skillfully avoided. I’m sure that the Lord was guiding things. It’s good to know some of the “scope of God’s work” these days. Even in an increasingly ungodly world we still know the He is in control. I feel blessed to know Christ more and more and that I am saved by His amazing grace.

  13. gr8grannyjacobs says:

I am wondering what God’s plan was in the Hudson event. Maybe he was showing someone their need of Him. My prayer is that they responded.

Pooh, You are in my prayers. I think you have a lovely name Deborah, but for me you will always be pooh, the first person I ever sent a hug to on the internet. May God’s hug be with you on Tuesday.

  14. poohpity says:

gr8, thank you and a bear hug for you! :)

We may never know the plan that God had in anything but we do know that it all went through His hand first and He knew that in His strength we could handle whatever comes before us. Like the life of Job. I bet when we come before His throne nothing that happened here will be important.

  15. wretch-like-me says:

On the other hand, Pooh, like a tapestry, we may not be able to tell what it looks like from our side but when we cross over to God’s, it may be a truly ‘miraculous’ work of wonder.
Double huggs for you and the upcoming hip surgery.

Having been in the military, I have known some of the best pilots. The stories of incredible flying skills and rescues that defy imagination. I have no doubt that the talents of this excellent example of the caliber of military trained pilots are worthy of the praise they have received. I only hope the pilot is a christian and can recognize their true source.

Final thought: I never had a problem sharing the concept of Christ as Savior to a person in the military. Those who have combat, flight, or rescue experience can readily identify with the concept of giving one’s life for a another. Christ fully embodies that concept. He is the ‘Real McCoy’. We are only frail imitations.

  16. poohpity says:

    w-l-m,

I often think about the military being similar to how God protects us, how mothers display His love and it seems that there are many spiritual implications in everything around us if we will only pay attention. Thank you for the hugs and they are returned. :) For a bit of humor, my body bares the seam lines of the tapestry, lol.
