Authority Over the Devil?

What can we do to resist the devil?

Do we have the authority to order him out of our lives?

Can we “pray hedges” around our homes and children that he and his demons are afraid to cross?

The questions are important. If we answer them with either undue alarm or too much confidence  we can play into our enemy’s hand.

Spiritual warfare is one of many two-sided issues. The Bible makes it clear that  those who are “in Christ,”

Have power to resist Satan (James 4:7), but,

Do not have authority over him (2 Peter 2:11; Jude 1:9)

This distinction is important. The “power over demons” that Jesus gave his 12 disciples was specific and temporary. As Matthew wrote, “When He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease” (Matt 10:1).

By overlooking the fact that this authority included the power “to heal all kinds of disease,” and that it was a sign-gift related to Jesus’ presentation to Israel,  some of us have  assumed that we also have been given the power in Jesus name to tell the devil where he can and cannot go. With good motives, we have tried to pray spiritual hedges around our children, homes, businesses, and churches to keep the “destroyer” at bay.

But making such assumptions can result in spiritual disillusionment. Wrong expectations can leave us with a false sense of security and eventual spiritual discouragement.

The one place in the Bible that mentions hedges that Satan can’t cross is the book of Job in the Old Testament. But the same story makes it clear that, where such “hedges” exist, it is God who puts them up, and takes them down for his own purposes (Job 1:10-12).

God has all authority over the devil. He is the one who gave the apostles the ability to heal disease and cast out demons in Jesus’ name to show that the Messiah of Israel had come. But later, even though the Apostle Paul had done many signs and miracles pointing to Christ, he himself lacked authority to  remove his unidentified “thorn in the flesh, a messenger from Satan,“  (2Cor 12:7). Instead, Paul prayed 3 times asking God to take it away, and the Lord said to his Apostle, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (v 9).

Other New Testament writers warn us about false teachers who claim to have authority over the devil(2Peter 2:10; Jude 1:8-9).

But that does not mean we’ve been left unprotected.

We have been given something better than the ability to “pray hedges in Jesus name”. The New Testament assures us that, for now, the misguided attacks of our enemy actually give us a chance to show a faith that is far more precious  than gold (1Peter 1:7). By using our very real spiritual battles as an opportunity to put our trust in the Lord, Paul tells us that we can “put out the flaming darts of our spiritual enemy” (Ephesians 6:16).

I want to take a closer look at that strategy with you in a following post. But for now want to emphasize what happens when we use the tactics of our enemy as an occasion to show our faith in God.

According to the Apostle James, when our spiritual enemy sees us drawing near to God, he runs from us in fear. James writes, “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:6-8).

Makes sense doesn’t it. If,  while trying to separate us from our God, our enemy sees that he is giving us reason to run to our Lord for protection and comfort, he will have reason to run, while leaving behind the disarmed “darts” or “thorns” that can continue to back-fire on him.

That is so deep, I have seen people that “prayed hedges around people and family” this bring a total new insight to my mind and thought process.

It goes to show we seem to gleam a passage out of the Bible and miss use it some times. Not knowing the full meaning of that passage or totally miss understanding it.

    Thanks

I for one do not give the devil the credit and attention as do some others. He is a fallen angel and rebellious leader of other fallen angels. He is not omnipresent nor all knowing as is God. God has given him the power he possesses, and God controls it.

In showing the world that Jesus is the awaited Messiah, Jesus demonstrates he has the power of God in all matters. That, one on one the devil may tempt but not kill. The devil can do nothing without God’s approval.

The praise of God, the praise of Jesus Christ can cause the devil to flee. Which is why praise music is important to we believers.

But I think believers confuse the devil with evil. Man’s heart is bent toward evil and so the evil that we see demonstrated by man is the choice that man is making, not the direct influence of Satan.

We are given power over evil and power over evil spirits. By Jesus himself. The only power Satan has in our lives is the power we surrender to him.

By keeping our eyes fixed on the Lord through lifes storms and especialy through the disappointments we experiance. We draw closer to God. The armor of God Paul mentions in Ephesians is our daily protection against evil as it comes against us from every direction. Prayer and faith is our power, Jesus gave us authority over evil.

Jesus is the “man” who was able to resist Satan’s temtations. God Himself had to become flesh in order to defeat Satan. Man could not, but God as man could.

So that we all could be redeemed from GOD’s wrath.

Good point Mart about the enemy actually causing us to run to Gods arms. Opportunities to give God glory.

I remember one time my little dog was being chased by a much larger and meaner dog. I knew that I could not get to my dog in time to save him, so I did the only thing I could think of, and yelled as loud as I could. That gave my little dog enough time to jump up to me. I caught him and I yelled at the other dog to go.

Submit to God, resist the devil, draw near to God and He will draw near to you. It does make sense. If we know that we can run to Our Father, and, that He will protect us, and, if we stay near to Him and not wander off, we would be better off. Not allowing the devil to influence us. Able to see him coming.

The sheep were much safer with the shepherd, than wandering off alone and defenseless. My children were safer near me than off alone. But, they also have a Shepherd watching over them and protecting them when they are away from me. I pray they feel confident enough (have faith) to run to Him when under attack.

When I was a young adult, my parents became friends with a pastor who was practicing the art of ‘casting out demons’ and he taped one particular incident which went into quite some detail with demon voices, etc. Reminded me of the movie, “The Exorcist.” At the time I was not living for the Lord, but still I was very uncomfortable with the whole situation. I just didn’t seem right to me, but I didn’t know why. Perhaps it was God’s spirit within me, even though I wasn’t living for Him at the time, cautioning me to ‘keep my distance.’

  5. sjd says:

That passage in Jude has always concerned me when I hear some so boldly speak against the devil.

The passage in Ephesians 6 regarding spiritual warfare has always left me with the understanding that we underestimate the warfare that goes on, and we also underutilize the “armor” that we have in Christ.

Great emphasis Mart on drawing close to God. Always learned to run close to my Dad when I was little and had angered a brother.(lol)

One other quick thought and I have to run. Will get back later in the day. One if the things in Jesus prayer in John 17 was for protection. He was not asking for Christians to be removed from the world. That would lose the whole point of them being salt and light. But in the midst of life, Jesus was asking the Father for protection from the evil one. Sometimes I wonder about the prayers that I present and the attitude I bring them to God. I don’t have to wonder about Jesus and His prayers.

I am so thankful that God has given me everything I need for life and godliness. That includes the right clothing/armor for this life.

Some years ago. I was in a minor auto accident. I was driving a 3/4 ton Ford pickup truck home from work, when a Mac truck missed a curve and hit me. Beginning at my door the semi took out the entire left side of my truck and even tore the entire rear axle out from under my truck.

As the entire event began to unfold, in slow motion, God said to me “hold on you’ll be alright you’re just going for a ride. I could feel and almost see a sphere, like a bubble, encompasing me. I “knew” i’d be ok.

Now every morning as I begin the day, I ask God to place me and my family in His sphere of love and protection. To keep harm from us and the dark one and his legions…To fill our day with Himself and fill our hearts with His Holy Spirit, and to bless all that we do.

The best defense is always a good offense. God is the ultimate authority. It is His favor I seek, only His will can protect me and my loved ones from evil.

As I read this I thought of the video of a cougar chasing a little bear. The little bear was running and swimming for his life but the cougar(devil) was after him. Finally he faced the cougar and it backed away; but in the background you could see moma bear roaring and coming to the rescue. He got close enough to her and the cougar had to flee. Our ability to resist the devil depends on our closeness to the one with real authority.

  8. JUDAH12 says:

I agree that the Devil can not do anything unless allowed by God (JOB), but I also know that if you rebuke Satan in the name of our Lord, and Saviour Jesus Christ he must flee from you. The Devil is always trying to present himself as a “angel of light,” we must be careful about doubting the power the Lord God has given to us.

  9. Laurielee says:

This topic brought to mind all the times in the OT when the people turned away from G-d and to their own ways. Whenever the people turned away, calamity would come upon them. When their hearts were turned towards G-d sometimes bad things would happen, but He upheld them through it all. I think He had a purpose in telling that this same story happened over and over again.

Whenever we are faced with trials, we have two choices; to turn TO G-d, or to turn AWAY from G-d.

Some of these instances that are mentioned of casting out and such, almost smack of “magic” or “divination”, which is probably what causes the Spirit that is within us to “step back” from the situation, or a cognitive dissonance that tells us that something is wrong.

If we are drawing closer to G-d when faced with such circumstances, we should trust what His Spirit is trying to tell us. I would try to get alone to pray, or pray with like-minded individuals.

  10. sawaybon says:

The first thing that grabbed my attention was the picture of the roaring lion, probably in reference to 1 Peter 5:8, “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Ironic that Jesus is also referred to as a lion, the Lion of Judah. The image that comes to my mind is the roar of Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia.

Just like Bob (rdrcomp), this topic of praying for a hedge of protection is one that has bothered me. I have friends in a men’s prayer group who regularly pray such prayers, almost as if it becomes a magic potion. I don’t question their sincerity, but it almost becomes a rather flippant request.

I raised this exact same question during the discussion in my course on Job this past semester. I recall the skepticism about the Satan referred to in Job actually being the devil we read about in the Garden of Eden or the one referred to in 1 Peter 5:8, and have come to the opinion that his identity is rather an accuser in the heavenly court. The description in Job 1:7 about the Satan “roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it” sounds like the roaring lion seeking whom he may devour, so that’s probably where that connection is made.

Mart makes a good point that it is God who puts the hedges up, and takes them down, for His own purposes. He obviously took down the hedge of protection surrounding Job. But there is another way of looking at hedges, and Job actually refers to it in 3:23, where he complains that God has hedged him in. We find the same sense in Lamentations 3:7, “He has walled (hedged) me in so I cannot escape.” Therefore, the hedge can protect us from the outside evil forces, but can also be used by God to keep us in. I suggest that it is a form of containment, of placing limits on our free will, for our own good and protection.

  11. nvstwyz says:

An excellent article and one that I hold dear for my family. James, the brother of Jesus and leader of the Jerusalem church, not one of the 12, states it correctly in his letter, to submit to God, resist the Devil and he will flea from you. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you. That nearness is our protection. Our only protection.

  12. Wisdom Hunter says:

I agree with part of what Mart is saying here. We do need to avoid presumption in thinking that we can order the Devil around. I also agree that at times we will suffer attacks from the Enemy that will drive us into the Lord’s arms. But I do not agree that the power to drive out demons is limited to the first apostles. There is nothing in the New Testament that supports this assertion. In fact I have exercised this power many times, and there is nothing spooky about it if we understand both the limitations and the reality of the authority that has been entrusted to us in Jesus. Church planters from Western cultures attempting to operate in cultures that are heavily demonized find that to be effective they have had to learn to exercise this authority.

  13. sawaybon says:

Excellent illustration, Bill, about the cougar and the little bear. We need to be close to God in order to be able to resist the devil.

  14. Wisdom Hunter says:

Further to my last comment – there is a distinction between ordering the Devil around, and casting out a specific demon.

  15. Loretta Beavis says:

That roaring lion photo really gets a point across!

The Bible uses the sheep image a lot…don’t see well, except when the head is down eating what’s directly in front of nose, easily startled and may run off and get lost…Jesus says we are His sheep and we know His voice. Yeah, its me…a lot before and lessening now…lion roars and away I gallop!

In yesterday’s ODB Elija was standing on a mountain before the Lord but didn’t hear Him in a wind, rock avalanche, earthquake, fire…but a “still small voice.” (1Kings 19:12 NKJ) I heard it a lot, I ignoredit too much because the other noise impressed me (strange voice.)

I tried being my own god too long, I’m becoming a more obedient sheep and less kicking at the goads (ox behavior) and doing it willingly.

Resistance is truth, but the spiritiual enemy will depart until a “more opportune time” (Luke 4:13 NKJ) My faith in Jesus and God’s promise is sufficient, but I have become desperate enough, by my own choices and weakness to listen, first, for my Good Shepherd’s voice, and wait upon Him for my rescue.

I notice the hedges and armies of angels prayers too and I would like to know if
you think that is human desire and emotion to express earnesty or fervency in prayer?

I love RBC and my online family!

A timely article just for me. However I would like to ask to clarify and to learn just how then should we pray ?

Really when you say ” some of us have assumed that we also have been given the power in Jesus name to tell the devil where he can and cannot go. With good motives, we have tried to pray spiritual hedges around our children, homes, businesses, and churches to keep the “destroyer” at bay. ”

The one place in the Bible that mentions hedges that Satan can’t cross is the book of Job in the Old Testament. But the same story makes it clear that, where such “hedges” exist, it is God who puts them up, and takes them down for his own purposes.

Then we could have prayed to God to put up hedges around our children and whatever that we may be concerned about. Since it is not within our power to build hedges that Satan could not cross.Which is the reason why we should submit to God, resist the Devil and he ( the devil ) will flea from us.

On a related topic, according to my pastor we, as christian needs to know our rights as God’s children. What then are our rights ? Clearly right now, I’d understood that having authority over Satan are not our rights. What then are our rights as God’s children against in relations to the devil’s riles ?

I hope someone could help me out and point me to the right resources to read. Thank you.

I need more clarity, does this mean that we cannot ask God to put a hedge of fire around us and our loved ones for protection? I dont think we have authority in and out of ourselves, but I believe that in Jesus name we can cast out demons and destroy the plans of the enemy. I agree that as we grow closer to God then the devil flees from us as the Bible says. When the Bible says that “He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of diseases” does that mean that in this present day we don’t have the power to do these things?

  18. grubbedk says:

Great topic – this problem of the Devil, Satan, and his power is very relevant in today’s world, at least in mine at the moment. Praying hedges seems parallel to pagan magical rituals and how they are so dependant on their invocations to protect them from “darkness”, evil spirits etc. I am dependant on our Lord for protection as long as I seek him and his righteousness. Bad stuff is allowed to happen for whatever reason here in this world and I am weak and don’t always see it before it is too late and I am in the midst of it. Drawing near to and trusting in the Lord is the only way I know of to get through any of it. I hate to think what could happen to my faith if my safety were dependant on my praying hedges around myself when evil or suffering is allowed to happen anyway. Or think about if I for some reason couldn’t pray? Where would I be if I had Alzheimers or something else prevented me or others from praying the needed hedges? I am thankful that God is all I need and greatly appreciate what has been said about drawing close to the Lord and the devil will flee. Thankyou.

I did not subscribe to this log but am a Christian that reads Our Daily Bread and got this an email. I am an avid reader and comment to Christian authors about their works often online. This morning I was praying for a soon to be recent college graduate at church that wants to teach school in Japan as he feels it is his calling and I wanted to check some of my old contacts for him. At that moment, The computer went bad on me so I checked the phone to use. The phone went bad, so I tried using the cell phone. That shut off as I was calling. I went in the car and the electronic time there went goofy. I prayed to God to fix my situations and just forgot it thinking if it was a spirtual matter God would take care of it. So I got your blog on spirtual warfare and am reminded that in Ephesians 6:12 (We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spirtual wickedness in high places) and I read further we are to put on the armor of God and pray in the Spirit.

    Hi everybody!
A woman once said: “Oh no, Mr I rather be in hell, because there’s the party, surely there’s Pedro Infante (a 50’s famous actor in Mex.) and so…, and I want to have fun”. Surely there’s no fun in devil’s hand, but pain. We all understand there’s no party in hell, there’s no party near devil, but it seems for some that being far from God and His Word don’t matter. As you wrote Mart, from Bible, we are to submit to God and devil will flee, just today somebody would say “I don’t want/don’t have time to read, and nothing’s gonna happend”. God’ll move hedges for us to go back to him. Even those who keep on in this “don’t want to” attitude, are slipping away from God bit by bit, and they don’t even know it, ’till they are in big pain, in their suffering will look for Him.(we all can be this kind)

An also, Ap 2:10 states another use for moving edges, for those grown in faith to be proved, and who’s experiences will bring more and more hopeness to those child or young in faith people.

Do not fear devil, rather fear Who can take the soul…
    Mt 10:28

For under His wings we are safe, lets trust in his faithfulness, and submit to His lovely Hand.

JOY:— Do not worry, I wont tell you it’s easy, it is a battle, but not ours. Read ephesians 6:10-20, but bit by bit, asking God to make you understand.
Please don’t ask God just to put the edges, is your relationship with Him wich makes God to state those hedges, how your heart is abailable for Him to make His cleaning work, how your will is decressing to let His will grow in you, how you day by day let Him bright through your life for every one else to see Him. Is your deeper time with Him that build hedges, so, about your rights, there in the Bible are the promisses for us, and when you are reading and find one, you claim God for it watching what He wants you to do, all promisses will being yours as well you claim for them again and again ’till you get them, sometimes erlier, sometimes would late some time ’till you let Him work in your heart. THE GRAT SECRET IN CHRISTIAN LIFE IS TO LEARN TO WAIT, THE GREAT TOOL IS TO BE STILL IN READING AND PRAYER, AND YOU’LL SEE HIS HAND MOVING YOUR LIFE TO HIS WILL, AND HIS WORKS.

  21. LoopyLu says:

Timely Topic- Since we spend almost 1/3 of our life sleeping…for me that means also dreaming alot. How much power does Satan have over our dreams…also is God able to speak to us through our dreams in this present time? It seems when I am in the word of God every day, praying faithfully, and involved in a Bible Study, I tend to have night mares! Is this spiritual warfare? I’m confused about the time spent sleeping. I usually wake up and pray my heart out to God…sometimes it relieves them and sometimes not. Any thoughts?

  22. SFDBWV says:

The key to having authority over the devil, is knowing who gives authority to anyone. That would be God.

The key to God is Jesus Christ.

In John 14 Jesus tells us, His followers, that “He that believeth on me. The works that I do shall he do also..”

Our authority over Satan/the devil/evil, comes from God by way of Jesus Christ, to us, Christ’s Church.

We exercise that authority in our actions and choices, and by our daily prayers. By asking God not to lead us into temptation but deliver us from …evil…We are exercising our athority over evil by placing it squarely upon the one who can.

  23. Helmet says:

BTW I don’t mean not to pray for God’s protection, but to focus in permanence in His word.

  24. sawaybon says:

grubbedk, you’ve hit the nail on the head. We make a mistake when we depend on our prayers for hedges to protect us. God is the one who decides on the placement of hedges. That’s the whole point of the book of Job. His decisions are beyond our understanding. We can ask for protection, but if we depend on our act of asking to dictate His will, we put ourselves in His place and stand in judgement over Him. That was the mistake Job made, which he finally realized in the end and repented (Job 42:6).

  25. nancyrobinsonmasters says:

I grew up listening to Bro. Richard DeHaan and I believe his comment would be “let’s cut to the cob” on this issue:
It is never wrong to ask God to build a hedge of protection around us or others as long as we acknowledge that it is God who will do the hedge building and not ourselves. His is the kingdom, THE POWER, and the Glory.
Lucifer had “I” problems that caused his fall–five times he boasted “I will” in two short verses because he had his eyes on “I” power. When we pray asking God to build a hedge, we need to also admit we are willing to accept the wide open spaces if that is what God knows is best for us.

There was no way out of this mess i had cars coming at me from both directions. As soon as I prayed to Jesus I had to take my hands off of the steering wheel. That steering wheel turned so fast and the next thing I knew we were turned around heading back in the direction we just came from.I thought good we will be safe now.But as I thought that i could see more cars coming at us from the other direction.they were traveling at 65 miles per hour and soon would be upon us causing major car accidents. As I looked at the approaching cars it looked like they were suddenly traveling in slow motion.
The next thing I knew we were back were we had just pulled out from.We all got out of the car nad then I heard this woman screaming and yelling your dead your dead you all should be dead. Her face was as white as a sheet.I then asked my girlfriend if she grabbed the steering wheel to turn the car around.I can still see the look on her face as she shook her head no.I then lifted my head and eyes up towards heaven and I thanked Jesus for saving us.

To me God did put a hedge around Job when He told Satan he cant take Job’s life which he didnt.

This is a topic that Im at lost for words. No doubt, many of us, if not all, pray for such hedges to be placed around our dearest friends, family and ourselves. Yet the next moment, we all give into temptations.

In my weakest moments, I failed time and time again. I always find myself running away from Him instead of running TO our loving Abba Father. I prayed that the Holy Spirit would well up within me to stop me from committing the same sin over and over again. Whats wrong with me?

  28. formandpower says:

To the point being made about praying a hedge of protection over people…God is a God of relationship. One of His purposes for creating us is for fellowship with Him. He can do anything He wants to do, whether or not we are involved in that. BUT God chooses to work through our prayers in an act of relationship. We ask Him for something, and if it’s in accordance with His Will, He gives it to us. There is dialog…not monolog…and there is an exchange of asking and giving; obedience and reward. To pray asking God for provision or to praise Him or to give Him glory is relationship with God…in action. I don’t say that praying is all about asking God for things and favors. My point is that prayer is dialog…an act of relationship with our God.

Yes, God will protect us if we don’t ask for a hedge of protection, but He doesn’t deny us the opportunity to ask Him for that protection, and we are NOT standing in judgement over God or usurping His place of authority if we ask Him for that protection. You parents out there…do you get mad at your kids or feel they have usurped your authority if they ask you for something you already had plans to give them? Suppose they are afraid of something and they run to you and curl up in your arms and passionately ask you to protect them. Are you mad at them for not knowing that you already protect them? Do you feel your position of authority over them is being threatened? No! And neither does God. You probably smile to yourselves and are proud of the fact that they have the smarts to realize they have that need and feel free to come to you and ask for it. To you, this is real, alive, and vital interaction with your kids (in other words…relationship). It pleases you to give them what they’ve asked for. It pleases you to have the opportunity to show them you care for them and will protect them when they ask you to. The other point to my little analogy here is that you, as a parent, consider the child’s request, and if you deem it not good for the child, you will deny the request. Interaction takes place, and both parent and child EXPERIENCE each other and get to know each other better through that experience.

Consider this: If you pray asking God for something and He faithfully answers your prayers…what does that do for your faith in prayer? What does it do for your relationship with God? What does it do for your understanding of who God is? Do you see where I’m going with this and why it’s important?

Do you believe God is alive and cares about you? Do you believe God wants to interact with you personally? So why believe that God is going to smack you down if you try to interact with Him. He is GOD, and He is bigger than us. He is capable of receiving prayers for things He has already planned to give us without condemning us for asking, or interpreting our request as an attempt to dethrown Him and put ourselves in His place.

I believe that it is an example of the kind of steadfast faith God wants us to grow toward. I think it is the story of the process Job goes through to become more mature in God. I think it is a sweet encouragement to us from God, that no matter what trials overtake us, God is with us and will bless us all the more in the end.

Scripture is full of passages where God Himself tells us to ask Him for the things we need and want, and assures us that if we know how to give good gifts as earthly fathers, how much more our Father in Heaven will give us good gifts. Don’t you think that protection is a good gift?

Or let’s look at it another way: why ask Him for anything? Why not just lay around like lumps and expect that God will do what God chooses to do without regard to His creation or interaction with us? What is our purpose?

I’m here to tell you from first-hand experience that God does care about us, and He does want us to interact with Him so that we can know Him more intimately. That’s why you should not live in fear of doing something “experiential” with God. We desparately need to experience God in our Spirits, Souls, and yes…even in our physical beings. Relationship is about experience and you can’t have a relationship without experiencing it.

I want to encourage all of you who would deny God’s power and authority is in operation today, and those with an unhealthy fear of God to get out there and get in the game. Experience God. Love Him with the love you would have for a good father. He’s there…He’s real…He loves you and He wants to interact with you. Yes you personally. Just ask Him to interact with you in a way you can sense in your physical being, and if you pray believing He will do that, you will see it for yourself. It’s beautiful and nothing to be in fear of. It will bring you closer to God than you ever thought possible.

Did you ever wonder why God puts up with the Devil? Why has God let the Devil rule the Earth all this time? Why, if we are made in God’s image do we have such impulses as greed and hate? Why did God let the devil persecute Job? Does anyone have any logical answers to these questions?

  31. dependent says:

For me, it is important to distinguish between a prayer posture of ‘asking God’ vs. ‘commanding the devil’. Asking in faith that our Father protects us from the enemy is consistent with the model prayer: “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” It is a matter of submission that we ask for protection from the evil one, knowing that God chooses whether that protection comes in the form of a defensive hedge or the means and grace to resist, and yes “endure”, the onslaught of the enemy of our souls.

James says submit to God and resist the devil. This might imply both an internal and an external focus. Submitting to God is perhaps primarily a struggle with our flesh–the constant battle to recognize He is God and we aren’t. Running to God and not away from him. Trusting he has our best interests in mind in terms of the method and timing of his certain deliverance.

So submitting to God isn’t a passive posture–that is clear from the word pictures involved in donning the armor of God, taking up the sword of the spirit, etc. Or wrestling/struggling against powers and principalities. There is effort involved in submitting to God, and it is indeed a struggle.

We err, in my opinion, when our prayers focus on our ‘authority’ and what we want to ‘command’ and ‘control’. Jesus, knowing he possessed all power and authority over the evil one is our model during his season of direct temptaion from Satan: He spoke only the eternal Word of God, revealing the deception of his adversary, and overcoming by that offensive piece of Paul’s “armor of God”. The ‘sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.’

By that simple response, accurately speaking God’s eternal words of life, he signaled his intention to submit to the authority of his Father and his confidence that Satan must do the same.

So, I am content to ask the Lord for protection–whether that is a preventative hedge or his grace to battle through opposition. But my focus must be on the One who holds full authority and power and a confidence his loving intentions for me in this world and the next as aid out so beautifully in 1 John chapter 5.

It is interesting to me that those who “install” hedges of protection rarely invoke prayers that indicate they “count it all joy” that their sufferings are producing patience and endurance and perserverance which lead to hope (and an increasing likeness of Christ).

[First time contributor here. Thanks RBC, Mart and those in this community for your contributions to my growth in Christ. I admire the ‘tone’ of these discussion threads as you grapple with the hard questions.]

  32. formandpower says:

The same thing that’s wrong with every man who has ever walked the face of the earth including Apostle Paul…except for Jesus. We have sin dwelling within us. Read Romans and be encouraged that there is hope for you. You’ll see that is no longer you who sin, but sin dwelling in you.

This doesn’t give us an excuse to sin, but an explanation as to why we do sin even though we are new creations. We are called to “work out our salvation”, which means to diligently seek to take up our cross, deny ourselves, and follow Christ daily, hourly, and even minute to minute.

Something that works for me is when I get thoughts of sin, is to close my eyes and picture myself placing the thoughts in a bag, tying the bag and handing it to Jesus while saying: “Lord Jesus, I take these thoughts captive and give them to you”. When I do that, they completely disappear from my mind. Then I don’t sin. It’s a process, and it is in obedience to Scripture (God’s Word), that I do this.

This is, I know, easier said than done. If you can get to a point where you do this everytime you have thoughts on a particular sin, you will see victory as Jesus works it out of you.

My prayers are in agreement with you that you are able to overcome through Jesus. AMEN!!!

  33. dar says:

Thank you for writing this article and finally speaking the truth on this subject. I was in a Word Faith church where taking authority over Satan was foundational. When the Lord led me out of that doctrine and poured truth into my heart, I learned surrender, submission and dependency. My relationship with the Lord grew enormously! He increased as my pride decreased. How great is our God!

  34. CNM says:

    formandpower-
I think you bring up a good point. Was it not Paul who said, “I do that which I don’t want to do. I think that which I don’t want to think”? The key is in not accepting defeat or excusing the behavior to the point where we surrender to it. Fight the good fight! The outcome is certain.

  35. sjd says:

I do not think most of us here believe that it is wrong to pray for protection. As I mentioned earlier, Jesus prayed for protection for us as seen in John 17.

What I find interesting is that as I think Mart mentioned, is that expectations of a life without struggles or illness, sometimes seems to be preached. As soon as problems arise, we want them gone, and lose sight of the learning within them. It appears to me that it is Scriptural to teach that it is in the midst of these battles that we find the grace of God to be sufficient. His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Our salvation is “worked out” in those times as we experience God’s grace as we walk by faith.

Don’t get me wrong, I do not believe that God is unable nor even unwilling to protect or heal. But often times He receives the glory as we cling to Him during those times realizing He is what I long for, not a perfect life. I want the Giver most and not the gift. I don’t mind the gifts and will not refuse them. But even as a child begins to play with a new toy, and ignore his father who gave it, we can long more for the relief than our God.

I will continue to pray for protection, healing. But I will not be discouraged if tomorrow I am deep in a spiritual battle. He promised me provision for that time as well.

(Understanding what the New Creation is all about has helped me tremendously in my struggles with sin.)

  36. poohpity says:

It seems whatever we give time to, that is where our heart will be. The only weapon we are given is the Word of God and when folks misuse it to benefit themselves it causes people to misunderstand a lot of scripture. If our minds, heart and souls have the word continually flowing through them it prevents other thoughts from taking rest. The battle belongs to the Lord and we are the army to do His will.

When we give a fleeting thought an opening and feed it with desire it becomes overpowering. Yes we will have thoughts but we can choose to give it a foothold or we can fill those thoughts with God’s Word and get closer to Him we will have a less possibility of giving way to evil desires. We are frail creatures and apart from God we have not got a chance to overcome but in Jesus, He has overcome the world.

Giving satan any thought is taking that time away from thinking about the Lord. Sometimes when I do not have anything to do my mind wonders off on some pretty strange stuff but I have the ability because of having God’s word in my heart to battle those thoughts sometimes it takes the help of others to draw me back not by casting hedges around my thoughts but by having the hedge of God’s word engraved in me and reminding me of that.

  37. daisymarygoldr says:

It is true that it is God who places a hedge of protection around us and even removes it… as He did in the case of Job. It is also true that God does not remove the thorn of flesh to keep us from becoming proud and exalting ourselves… as seen in the case of Paul.

However, in chapter 4, James is not talking about demon possession or sickness or suffering, rather he is telling us to resist the temptations of the devil… and be drawn by the irresistible grace of God. It is a known fact that the devil has authority over this world… and James tells us that friendship with the world is enmity with God.

God draws us to Christ by means of the Holy Spirit (John 6:44)…by grace alone. The devil also tries to draw us into the world by means of his 3-pronged worldly hook of sorts… by tempting us through:

    – pleasure: The lust of the flesh
    – possession: The lust of the eyes
    – position: Pride of life

In the Garden of Eden, the devil tempted… and his bait was the forbidden fruit which… looked good for food i.e. lust of the flesh. The possession of knowledge present in the fruit was pleasant to the eyes— lust of the eyes. The desire to make one wise and become equal to the position of God is the pride of life. The first Adam (courtesy of Eve) disobeyed God and succumbed to the devil’s temptations… to commit the deadly sin of pride.

  38. sawaybon says:

I agree that God will protect us if we don’t ask for a hedge of protection, and that He doesn’t deny us the opportunity to ask Him for that protection, and I agree that we are NOT standing in judgement over God if we ask Him for that hedge of protection. But I think we ARE standing in judgement over God when we refuse to accept His choice to either remove the hedge of protection or to not provide it as we have asked. Instead, we complain and lament our hardship, which is what Job did. I realize that I am being very hard on Job here, which is repulsive to most people — seems calloused and uncaring. But read how God takes Job to task in chapters 38-41. Why does He do that? There is clearly something wrong with Job’s perspective, and it isn’t the traditional wisdom that his three friends offer, either — that he must have a specific hidden or unconfessed sin. Rather, it is a deep-rooted sense of injustice on the part of God, and thereby Job places himself in judgement over God and His ways.

Job is not a good example of the kind of steadfast faith God wants us to grow toward. In fact, he shows more acceptance initially than he does as time goes on. Apart from his repentance at the very end, the only way he becomes more mature in God is the progression of his hope — for a mediator in 9:33 (foreshadowing Christ?) to the declaration in 19:25, “I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth” (a clear reference to Christ).

Is it guaranteed that God will bless us all the more in the end? That sounds like prosperity gospel. What happens when He doesn’t? Yes, He did in the case of Job, but it doesn’t always turn out that way. Yes, it is encouraging that in Job’s case it did end positively, but such a happy ending is like a slap in the face of those whose ending is not a happy one. There’s a part of me that wishes that the happy ending of Job had been left out.

Here’s my five-sentence take on the Book of Job: His friends attempted theodicy, but in their defense of God, they end up condemning Job the sufferer. The option is to condemn God, which is what Job did. We cannot do either, for as children of the dust, we cannot explain or justify suffering. We must simply accept it as a mystery. God defends those who trust Him and accept what He does.

  39. daisymarygoldr says:

Thankfully, the last Adam- Jesus Christ resisted the devil’s similar temptations in the wilderness… by the sword— the written Word of God! Today, when we are lured with those temptations… if we give in to the devil’s lies to disobey God, we are also guilty of the original sin of pride.

James reminds us that God resists the proud… but His selfsame irresistible grace is always available to draw us back to Him. So when we humbly “submit” to God (James 4:7) which means to “obey” the prodding of the Holy Spirit… the Devil will flee away as he did in the case of Jesus (Matt 4:11)

We can overcome temptations by the Word alone! Hearing and doing the word… i.e. to obey produces faith. Hence, I agree that the tactics of our enemy gives us an occasion to show our faith in God.

Had a very strict Sunday school teacher who made us take notes on this subject. At that time as an 11-yr old I had no idea about what it all meant… but now it is all making so much sense. So, this is not to teach as this is not my personal knowledge … just wanted to share what I had learned during my childhood years…

Comment on the pics: The big cat/roaring lion— the devil. The little cat is an overcomer… who has successfully climbed the steps and is perched below the foliage of God’s irresistible grace… represents an “obedient” child of God who has resisted the devil with God’s word and by faith has overcome the evil one!

  40. MaryKristine says:

When God created the world, all it took was for Him to speak and it was done. Genesis 1:3 “Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.” God spoke and it was done. John tells us that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” John 1:1 “And the Word became flesh and welt among us” John 1:14. Jesus was in the beginning…Jesus walked the earth.

Furthermore, Hebrews 4:12 tells us that “the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-eged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Additionally, the Psalmist tells us in 119:11 “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.”

When I was told that my daughter had a mass on her kidney and a cyst on the pineal gland in her brain I was gripped by fear. I ran to God. For the next few days Proverbs 3:5-6 was delivered to me over and over again. So, I did just that. I trusted in the Lord with all my heart. I did not lean on my own understanding. In all my ways I acknowledged Him and let Him make my path straight. She is fine now. The mass…gone. The cyst…stable…operable if needed; however, not necessary.

Do I still get afraid? Yes; however, when gripped with fear or sin, I run to God, His Word. By reading it everyday, it only took a few months to memorize Psalm 91. It is beautiful and long so that by the time I am finished reciting it in my head…my mind is set straight.

Also, praise music repeated in the mind is soothing and very effective. We mainly listen to our local Christian radio station so that our mind does not get full of the wrong stuff. Listen…you will start waking up in he morning to praise songs in your head.

You cannot sin and praise God at the same time.

  41. Charis says:

(((sigh))) I’m late when I follow via rss…

I like charismatic kind of churches better, but it never set right with me when they “rebuke the devil” because of the following verse from Jude 9. The LORD is my hedge and I want to call upon HIM to “rebuke the devil”.

“Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!'” Jude 9

  42. taleman1944 says:

It seems to me a great subject for discussion. I know there are some of us that don’t believe we have any authority over Satan whatsoever, in opposition to Mk. 16:17, and there are some of us who DO believe the authority over Satan is extended to Believers in our day and age.
Believing one way or the other will not cause us to lose our salvation. We will still be raptured with Him to be with Him forever. It’s just that one side will have more spiritual experiences than the other.
May the Lord give us the understanding and wisdom needed for us to make the right decision to enter into a realm we’ve never been to or to remain in unbelief
and not involve ourselves in this area/sphere of ministry given.
Believing Jesus is “the same YT&F” means what He was 2 thousand years ago, He is still today in 2009. In effect, WE are Him today. His life is alive in us and upon so believing, then His power is still available today like it was back then when He walked this Earth. And walking in His power and His life, then he can still deliver individuals from satanic dominion today like He did back two millenniums ago. And this He does through His body, the Church, US, His people and instruments today.
Oh, well. There have always been two camps on this subject matter and there will always be two camps. We choose where we want to believe and serve Christ in whatever ministry He puts us in and when confronted with other fellow Believers who believe contrary to our beliefs, then we must not argue but just “agree to disagree” and continue serving Jesus until He comes.
    Amen. Amen.

  43. laney says:

MarkL, We will always have sin in our life.Just the fact that this sin bothers you is a good sign.If you weren’t saved it would not bother you at all.
Your answer is in the cross. From the Evangelist.
We are to be conformed to the Image of Christ. In this life we are going to move from “Glory to Glory” in our growth. We are to move foward, pressing towards freedom from sin and all that hinders us from this transformation. As our faith remains steadfast upon the cross, the Holy Spirit will continue that much needed work.No beleiver will ever “arrive” at being “completed” or “perfected” in this life time.Yet, that was why we were “apprehended”.Even though we have not yet”seized,” “laid hold of,” or “arrived at” this goal,it is the prize we should be pressing towards.I have been arrested, laid hold of God to be perfected by His Spirit through Faith in the cross. And to this end,I will ever strive with all my heart.I have not yet arrived, despite the marvelous changes in my life. One fine day I will obtain to the perfection Christ died to give me,at the rapture of the church.Until that moment,I will press for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus!I will pursue and try to apprehend that for which I was apprehended and one day,I will attain it, in Christ Jesus.
Mark I hope this helps Know that you are not alone.None of us have arrived there yet and won’t in this life time.

  44. pneumatika says:

There are other places in Scripture that talk about “hedges” of protection. Hosea 2:6 is a significant passage in this regard, but it is a hedge to keep Israel from chasing her sin (not a hedge that keeps haSatan out, as in Job).

  45. Bill says:

Laurielee I am curious why you leave the o out of the word God when you write?

  46. pneumatika says:

    Mart, you said:
    >>The “power over demons” that Jesus gave his 12 disciples was specific and temporary. As Matthew wrote, “When He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease” (Matt 10:1).
    >>By overlooking the fact that this authority included the power “to heal all kinds of disease,” and that it was a sign-gift related to Jesus’ presentation to Israel, some of us have assumed that we also have been given the power in Jesus name to tell the devil where he can and cannot go.<<

Yet in Mark’s relation of the “Great Commission”, Jesus commands his disciples, including all of us that are his followers, to:
“Go into all the world and preach the gospel … And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name [authority/power] they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover” (Mk 16:15,17-18 NKJV).

It seems to me that your implication is that followers of Jesus are not to be “casting out demons” or “healing all kinds of diseases” today. I feel that I must challenge that if this is what you are saying. Rather, our question should be how do we allow God to do these wonders through us, these signs that Jesus said would follow? We have all seen abuse of this teaching of “deliverance” and praying hedges, but what is the biblical prescription?

  47. Mart De Haan says:

Was writing at the same time as pneumatica, so my comment didn’t make sense. Will try again :-)… One issue is that there are textual issues with Mark 16. Many versions note that some of the earliest manuscripts do not include Mark 16:9-20.

  48. sandi2 says:

I always felt that the power we have from Jesus is the Holy Spirit who lives in us. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. The Holy Spirit is Jesus, our power.

  49. Laurielee says:

Pneumatika, I sure hope I didn’t confuse you or anything. I leave the “o” out in order not to offend Jewish seekers. It’s very hard to witness to someone who feels that you are offending them. Jews for Jesus, or Messianic Jews also do not use the “o”. Though it is not G-d’s Name, they feel that it is not right to use it in any context except for worship, praise, and thanksgiving. My daughter’s fiancee is Jewish and I want to keep the lines of communication open. He and others I talk to are more open when they see that I have respect, they call it a “mitzvah”, or good deed.

  50. laney says:

I guess i fall in the camp of praying hedges of protection around my friends and family.I even pray for the persecuted church.
Acts 12:5 Peter therefore was kept in prison:but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.Acts12:11-12And when Peter was come to himself,he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord has sent His Angel, and has delivered me out of the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. And when he had considered the thing,he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying This is a good example for us today that the church should be praying for one another.
Last year I went with a friend to her church to take a course on intercessory prayer. Some of the things I did not agree with.Especially binding the devil.I have even had people tell me don’t let just anyone lay hands on you and pray for you. Some things just seemed like a bunch of nonsence to me.But I do beleive in the power of prayer.

  51. daisymarygoldr says:

pneumatika, Miracles still occur and exist in unbelieving parts of the world. When I say unbelieving… it means those who have never heard about Jesus Christ. There are whole continents that are steeped in paganism… people living in such places worship their own gods…that are seemingly powerful.

When the good news of Christ is preached to those populations… healing of diseases, casting out of demons, protection from deadly beasts and poisonous substances mentioned in Mark 16 is a powerful sign of the supernatural power of God that identifies followers of Christ.

Jesus went about healing in a very inconspicuous way… not making it into a big “show and tell” as many charismatic groups do today. I have witnessed some of those miraculous works that effectively bring unbelievers to Christ.

Therefore, Mark 16 does not apply to those who already know about Christ (whether they are Christians or non Christians)…and have willfully chosen to reject and not believe in Him.

  52. daisymarygoldr says:

Personally, I have experienced healing in my body and also know friends who have experienced the same… I also know friends who wept and cried out to the Lord, prayed and fasted for the healing of their loved ones… only to lose them to death in the end.

Believers who have experienced the healing touch of the Lord never dwell and linger on the supernatural occurrence. In other words our faith is not hinged onto or contingent on our healing.

Moreover, as some have mentioned here, Mark 16 is the perfect breeding ground for the prosperity gospel evangelists. If a church emphasizes on authority over the devil to heal diseases and cast out demons… disillusionment and faith wreck will inevitably follow within that flock… and many will forsake Christ and deny their faith.

As believers we should not look for signs… because we do not see and believe. We simply walk by faith. Jesus did not heal all the lame in Israel and all the blind did not receive sight.

The focus of our great commission is not to wipe out evil, poverty and sickness to make this a perfect world because perfection is not for this world. Hence that should not be the sole intent of evangelizing to the lost. God heals some and does not heal others… so that healing or no healing all the glory goes to Him… and His purpose is to seek glory even in the broken imperfection of this sinful world!

  53. sandi2 says:

Everywhere I recall reading about Jesus healing…..he healed them ALL. Am I wrong?

  54. sandi2 says:

I also believe that learning to receive is something we must do. Faith plus nothing is what we have, is all we need. Not works. As christians we are to tell the good news, we may only plant a seed, or water it, or harvest it. But it is all the work done by the body of Christ, through the Holy Spirit in each believer.

  55. mjday11 says:

Today’s Been Thinking About has been troubling for me. When my children were growing up, I would pray at bedtime with each. “Thank your Lord for this day. Give Oran (or Graham, Marty, or Jamie) a good sleep. Guide him in the way he should go tomorrow.” That was the general prayer.

Oran, Marty and Jamie have grown into godly young men. Tomorrow my family is flying to Denver to attend Oran’s graduation ceremonies at Colorado School of Mines.

At age fiftenn Graham tragically veered into a world of drugs. He killed himself playing russian roulette on a warm August night six years ago.

So those countless prayers for protection and guidance were in a way asking for a hedge around my boys. What more can a parent do than “by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving make your requests known to God”. God just had a different plan for Graham. Someday I’ll understand it.

I hold no grudges against God. I focus on the three wonderful boys I still have. And I will continue to pray for God’s blessings upon them. James 4:2 says “You do not have, because you do not ask God”. So we should be asking, as a child asks his parent.

Thanks for the opportunity to share. Hope I made some sense.

The minute we don’t give Satan (Prince of this Earth)credit for the evil he weilds in the affairs of men, we are scoffing just as Peter and Jude have alluded to.
This subject has interested me for years and I have been privy to some outlandish, emotional displays of Devil baiting which always seemed to me to be “Religious Theatre”!
The Bible seems to teach restraint when confronting Satan and his minions! Any attack on Satan had better be “in the Name of Jesus”, and not under our own power or in our own name or status as religious leader. It is a “gray area”. We see the arch angels circumspect when confronting Satan but yet many denominations teach that as believers we have more power than the angels in this matter.I know I am an Heir to the Kingdom and have great power over Evil but over the “Evil One”??
I would appreciate more on this subject as I tend to agree with your sentiments.

  58. bubbles says:

mjday11, I’m so sorry for your loss, so very sorry.

I have a question to throw out there. I’m almost embarrassed to ask it.

Let it be prefaced by saying God is always good. His will is perfect. Isaiah says our thoughts/ways aren’t like His. I understand my human mind cannot understand everything about God.

All of my life I have heard missionaries and other Christians tell how they have been protected. I know God has protected me from physical harm as well. We always give God the glory for this protection. We can usually point out that someone (or ourselves) have been praying for us. That I can understand.

Last week I witnessed a person dear to me do something that was susprising, shocking, and totally out of character. Not only did it deeply sadden me, but many others as well. It has really jerked the rug out from underneath me. I had nothing to do with what this person did; I was in the same place when it happened.

Not 45 minutes before the incident occurred, I was thanking God for this individual. This person loves the Lord. I was thanking God for this individual, but I had not been praying for the Lord to protect him, and encourage him.

Later on that day, the ‘what ifs’ began to perculate in my mind. What if I had been more fervent in praying for this dear one? Would/could the prayers for guidance, encouragement, and protection have altered this sad and difficult situation?

Embarrassing question: Do sad/terrible things sometimes happen to people because of lack of prayer on the parts of others? I hope this doesn’t sound hmanistic or totally out in left field. . Sorry if this rambled on and on. . . does anyone have any thought on this?
I know we may not know the answers until we get to Heaven, and that is okay. I know God doesn’t need to explain what He does.

  59. formandpower says:

God tells us that He “created the destroyer to work havoc”. (Ref: Isaiah 54:16) God allows the enemy to work havoc. If he allows this, then talking of God’s power compared to the devil’s power is not the point. Even the devil knows that He is defeated now…by Jesus, who is our God. Of course God is more powerful, but the point is that God allows satan to sift us, and He also gave us tools to take power and authority over satan in our lives and the lives of those God put into our lives. I don’t recommend doing it without getting some training and understanding of how to do it, but with maturity and practice one gets good at being obedient in the area of spiritual warfare.

In Job as well as Luke we see that satan is constantly petitioning God to interfere in our lives. This is another point of the book of Job, if we will be astute and gleen the treasures of truth buried within Scripture. God spoke to satan and told him that Job was a man whom God saw righteousness in, and satan petitioned God to test Job. Satan used a rationale that Job had no reason to be disobedient or stop loving God, so God allowed satan to test Job. God’s strength over satan is assumed by the fact that satan had to ask God permission to test Job.

In Luke 22:31-32 we see that Jesus reveals to Peter that satan asked God to “sift him as wheat”, and that Peter would deny Jesus 3 times before the rooster crowed.

These passages from both the old and new testaments show how satan operates in the spiritual realm. He is always trying to get permission from God to work us over and prove God wrong about us. And indeed these afflictions produce in us a weight of glory in the eternal. We rejoice in the glory produced. Just because we don’t say it when speaking of other things doesn’t mean we don’t rejoice. Satan’s motivation isn’t really to prove God wrong, but to try and destroy us.

God works all things together for good, but satan has no such designs. Scripture says that satan came to kill, steal from us, and destroy us. THAT is why we need to be prepared with power and authority to rebuke satan and his minions and all forms of unclean spirits. That is why we must take that authority to war over “the principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places”.

There is no way we can take this power and authority and use it without it having been given to us. God will not give it to us if we operate outside His will and authority. If we try to take credit ourselves, we are outside of God’s will and authority. Of course we should all be concerned that we give God the glory and place credit where credit is due for these things, but Scripture says that He gives us the power and authority if we meet the terms.

Just as Jesus did only what He saw the Father do, we must only do what we see Jesus do. He gave us the tools of power and authority over the enemy, and we must use those tools in the way He used them.

A lot of the hype and concern over this topic is because of semantics. It is common in English to say something like “prayer heals”. It is unspoken but implied that “praying and asking God to heal” is what heals…not that healing is invoked by speaking a prayer. So God does the healing and we merely touch what He is doing. We do this by taking action in relationship with God and the one we are praying for healing with. In English we might also say: “we have power and authority over the enemy”, but it is implied and unspoken that because we are abiding in God and He in us, we can take authority over the enemy, and God will act on our behalf to sieze the enemy and remove him from our circumstances.

Where does the power and authority come from? God. Who removes the enemy from the situation when we tell the enemy to leave? God. It’s that simple…we can’t do it ourselves.

Those who assume that someone using that power and authority is trying to also grab credit for the results, is taking a lot for granted and assuming…not acting on facts.

We know that apart from God we can do nothing…it says so in Scripture. So it’s only for the exercise of reminding ourselves that it isn’t us but God who does these things, that we even feel compelled to comment on the obvious.

Scripture also tells us that we can leave the door open for satan to successfully petition God for satan to work us over. So spiritual warfare begins with putting on the full armor of God (ref: Ephesians 6:10-18) so that we can take our stand against the devil’s schemes. We wear the belt of truth, so that the devil cannot lie to us and so that when he tries to gain a foothold to sift us with lies, we can answer Him as Jesus did…with truth. We wear the breastplate of righteousness so that we can tell satan and his minions that we are God’s righteousness and he has no part of us. We fight off attacks with the shield of faith…but if we have not been given power and authority over the enemy, what do we put our faith in? Where does it say in Scripture that we are to just stand by and do nothing but have faith while God saves us from attacks of the evil one? It doesn’t. We take the helmet of salvation because that is our seal of redemption; our sign from God that says to satan “no trespassing”. And yes, of course, we take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. This is how Jesus Himself dealt with satan in the wilderness. Satan took Scripture out of context to try and get his way with Jesus, but Jesus, knowing all Scripture, not only refused satans feable attempt to corner Jesus with the Word, but He set satan straight about what Scripture actually said. We are also to pray in the spirit.

So we do have an active part in spiritual warfare including to take power and authority over the enemy. We know without a doubt that it is God’s power, and God’s authority that actually accomplish the task…however, as I’ve stated before in this thread, we are a part of it and have a role because we are acting in relationship with God and other saints.

Relationship and taking an active part in the lives of God and others is what makes life come alive. It is what completes us. We are meant for relationship with each other and with God.

Let me ask this: Have you ever read a biography of someone you never met? Do you feel you have a relationship with that person? That’s right, you only know OF that person, and you can only know what is written in the book if you don’t have a relationship with that person. Scripture is our reference point. It is the Word of God. It is the beginning of understanding. Without relationship with God, we can only hope to know the things written about God in Scripture, and as the Scripture itself says, “volumes could not contain the works of Jesus”.

Without a vital and alive relationship with God, we aren’t getting to know God fully. And that is the whole point.

  60. daisymarygoldr says:

    sandi2,
“… there were many widows in Israel …and yet Elijah was sent …only to Zarephath… And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed…only Naaman the Syrian.” Luke 4: 26-27

“Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called…Bethesda… In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered…” (John 1: 3-4)
Jesus approached and healed only one man who was ill for thirty-eight years.

  61. laney says:

Sometimes when satan sees Gods people drawing close to Him it so infuriates him that he goes after us with a vengence. He will try everything in his power to try and destroy our faith in our Lord.He hates God and all Gods children. He wants all the Glory for himself. He can’t stand it when we Draw close to God and worship him.

  62. saled says:

mjday11, Thank you for sharing your story about praying for your children. And bubbles, thank you for asking the question, “Do sad/terrible things happen because of lack of prayer?” I pray for my children, but I have to admitt that I have spent more time worrying about what might happen to them than praying. It has only been in the past year that I have realized that I tried to play God, tried by praying and worrying and everything else I could think of, to control what happens to my children. Over the past year, God helped me realize that he is God, I am human, I can not control everything. I depend on him to create the miracle of re-birth in my children, and to create their future.

  63. Laurielee says:

Bubbles, I don’t know if this will help or not, but the Father also gave us all free will to choose our actions.

I’ve heard of some faith healers that when a person is not healed, they say that maybe your faith is lacking or you didn’t pray hard enough, etc.

I remember reading where Jesus told the DISCIPLES that their faith wasn’t strong enough, but not the subject of the healing.

I believe that we must be very, very careful to understand what is true and what is superstition.

  64. poohpity says:

I think as Mart was saying that fleeing from the devil we run to God but if the devil can coax us away by saying things like “God is not answering your prayers” and “If God can heal then why hasn’t He healed me?” and many other little subtle fiery darts we tend to listen to satan’s lies rather than trusting God and praising Him in ALL things. Because no matter our circumstances it can ALL be turned around for good.

  65. suec says:

I appreciate the key points raised about the authority of the devil. As far as praying for hedges, perhaps I took a very simplistic view that it just meant asking God for protection from the wiles of the devil and envisioned God placing a physical hedge around someone so that Satan couldn’t touch them. It’s been an important prayer of mine because in my experience it’s one that has been answered with regards to certain people I’ve prayed for and I’ve seen wonders come about in their life. So I’m not sure why praying for a hedge around someone would be considered to be of concern.

  66. Helmet says:

Here I go, when I was younger, in also faith, I had my first daughter 4 y.o. and a baby girl. I was sleeping, and in the dinner room was the tipping machine, belonged to my grand father, the kind that brakes your finger for tipping an ‘a’.
Suddenly, I woke for the sound of tipping, turned my face and my husband was beside me… what’s that? tip tip tip rrrrr cling! tip tip… Hey, I wispered to my husb, do you hear that? -Yes, who’s there? -I don’t know. He steped to the door in tip toes, and opened it wide, then I saw the machine working by it self!… pause… and I said “Why are you doing that?” I cried, suddenly a coushon (cojin in spanish, not sure the name in eng.) rushed to my face and sopped in front of me… just when I cried “In Jesus name, go back, you don’t have any power ’cause I belong to him”!! Then, I oppened my eyes, everything was quiet, my husband sleeping, and tippin machine still. ¿What was that? I was still for a wile, making my mind clear… was I sleeping? I’m not sure… for a wile, I was thinking about it.
So, I wonder, if something like this happens to any of us, awaked, could we be able to answer in Jesus name, sure of His protection? I don’t know, but in everything which God wants me to go through, He’ll give me the strength, but thinking in this: Daniel didn’t start prayer the very moment in front of lions, he had a prayer life, that’s the way God wants us to be, listening.

Mj: Sorry for your son, I’m sure, we all pray for our loved ones, but each one take his own decission, one day, the Lord will let you see what happened in your son’s heart about your prayer. I like so much the way you keep trusting in Him insted blaming. G.bless ‘u

  67. Rick123 says:

1Jo 2:14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him [that is] from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

When we are abiding in Christ his blood covers us and protects us. Jesus’ blood is the ultimate sacrifice that covers all believers from God’s wrath and protects us from satanic attack. In addition to overcoming satan by the blood of the Lamb, we also overcome him by believing in God’s word which is his hammer(Jer 23:29). And beat up satan’s head with God’s hammer, and keep trampling him under our feet. If it is God’s will for us to fall, so be it, for Christ’s Glory, but let us always fight the good fight of faith unto the end.

Rev 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Psa 91:13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

  68. mexico says:

Some very great insights. I am going to have to study this out more. Being a Missionary in Mexico we fight the occult and attacks all of the time at 1 of our orphanages. We just had a witch Dr put symbols on each corner of our property. That day a young girl from this cult just about killed a younger child. Not going in to the full details, it was clearly an attack by satin, demons etc… We destroyed all of the markings and walked the property praying a hedge around the children. It worked but we also made the staement that we needed to draw closer to God as we come under these attacks. So which protected the chhildren ?…

  69. SFDBWV says:

So much imput it is difficult to sort it all out.

I don’t for the life of me see what is wrong with praying for protection for yourself and your loved ones.
    1John 5:15
“And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him.”

    Psalms 37:4
“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

    :7
“Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him…”

Pray in the name of Jesus Christ, and enter into the presense of God. Make your resquests be known to Him. Believe and have faith that He is able to answer your prayers.

It is people, who will rob you of your faith, by being the mouth piece for the dark one, satan, evil. Jesus said to Satan “Get thee behind me Satan” You buck up draw courage from the Lord and tell that old snake to Get lost!

I will say again, the devil has no power over you, that you don’t surrender to him.

God is the only power, Jesus our “friend” gives us the power over evil. Through Him.

  71. Mart De Haan says:

The distinction I’m suggesting is the difference between humbly and lovingly asking God to protect our loved ones, and assuming that we can “pray a hedge” around them.

As some have expressed, in some cases, this can just be a matter of semantics… if we are really talking about a request we make of the Lord.

In too many instances, though, I’m afraid that well meaning persons set themselves up for disillusionment by thinking that by “words of faith” (and sometimes loud and authoritative styles) they can bar or bind the forces of darkness from their homes, churches, or even communities.

The issue in such cases is not just a matter of words/semantics but of mistaken beliefs and attitudes that can result in enormous disappointment in God when he does not honor our own expectations or “words of faith”…

  72. gr8grannyjacobs says:

Prayer for me is foremost asking God to keep my heart pure and keep my faith strong. There have been times when I have questioned answers to my prayers and wondered why God didn’t do things my way but as I grow deeper in relationship with the Father the more at peace I am with His answers.

Has not God put a hedge around all who believe in Him? That does not mean we won’t have trials and suffering but for me it means He will protect us (our hearts) from the evil one until we are redeemed. In the end all that matters is who has your heart.

Steve praying for God’s protection can never be wrong from my perspective.

  73. Mart De Haan says:

Have never heard anyone suggest that praying for protection is wrong. But if we are just praying for physical protection, rather than for the spiritual rescue, faith, love, and hope of a loved one, we may not be praying in the Spirit.

  74. gr8grannyjacobs says:

Mart that is exactly what I meant you just said it so much better.

  75. SFDBWV says:

Thnk you Mart for your explanation. As I read the posts above I was getting the idea that somehow, it wasn’t correct to pray for protection.

If a loved one goes off on a sea voyage or airplane trip or even as we send off our son’s and daughters to war zones. I see nothing incorrect about asking for their physical protection from God.

I agree that if a person arrogantly attempts to speak a “hedge” around themselves or anyone else, with out it being a prayer request through Jesus Christ to God, That, that is paramount to witchcraft.

Thanks for the help in understanding the difference being discussed. I was very confused.

    Steve

  76. mtman says:

I’ve been gone for a few days and just catching up but this is directed to MART. Do I understand that you are saying we can’t pray a hedge around loved ones? How can we pray the Lord’s prayer if we only think parts of it work. Does that assume that satan is behind all bad things that happen to us? That gives satan power that he doesn’t have. He has no power over us and that is clearly stated in the bible. Also by even assuming that he has more power than he has – doesn’t that subtly erode from the power of Jesus and God himself. Didn’t Jesus tell us that if we had the faith of a mustard seed we could move mountains. If he told us that, then to assume that we can’t pray a hedge or bulk head around ourselves and loved ones seems to me to be taking a side path that leads us in the wrong direction.
Does that mean that we can pray a hedge around loved ones to protect them from physical harm? Not in my opinion but it does keep satan from snatching their souls up. Maybe that is where the real spiritual warfare takes place in the struggle over souls. Therefore shouldn’t we as the Lord’s own be pressing on to bring them to the Lord? If they remain neutral aren’t we praying somewhat in vain and that hedge in non existant. If they decide not to choose Jesus no hedge exists and they are open to being taken by the evil one.
When the Lord holds us in his hand all the forces of evil and satan can’t touch us. That is what I believe and to believe any less erodes the power of our Lord himself. I just don’t think physical things that happen are all attributed to satan.
Key words here are faith, prayer and trust in our Lord to keep us (and our loved ones) in his hand. Our souls could not be safer any place than in his hand. Just my thoughts.

  77. cherielyn says:

Protection from the devil/demons through faith healers: Hubby & I once attended a charismatic dinner & faith healing event. We do not believe in these things, but went because a friend who lived a distance away, whom we hadn’t seen in years, had asked us to come because it was being held at a restaurant a mile from our home.

The faith healer’s area of ‘expertise’ was in restoring fallen arches & short legs. One of my legs happens to be slightly shorter. When it came time for the healing part of the event, hubby & I stood on the outskirts of the group just observing the restoration of fallen arches. Many times the healer & I made eye contact and I felt an evil presence within him and earnestly prayed that no one would be taken in by the ‘snake oil salesman’.

When he started with the ‘leg lengthening’ portion and asked if there was anyone who needed healing, my hubby was pointing down to the top of my head, behind me & unbeknowst to me, indicating that I needed help in that area. I resisted going up, but was being reluctantly pushed forward.

I was instructed to sit in a chair and hold my legs out in front of me. I complied. One leg did ‘appear’ shorter and he ‘magically’ made it ‘appear’ to lengthen much to everyone’s amazement. I would have liked to laugh in his face right there, but restrained myself. The next day our friend called praising God and asking what I thought about it. At that point I had to be frank with him and tell him that the healer had lengthened the wrong leg! I also shared about the evil presence I felt. I believe that God put a hedge of protection around me that night. I just wish the hedge had been around everyone in that group and that the man would have been exposed for the phony he was.

Laurielee: I, too, was curious about why you left the ‘o’ out of God. I’m so glad Pneumatika asked, because I was still trying to work up the courage to ask you myself.

I can identify with booknut, LoopyLu, laney & Helmet with some incidents you shared that have some similarity to events that happened to me. However, now concerned about ‘crossing the line’ (off main subject) I hesitate to share them.

Quite an explosion of new ‘faces’ here. Welcome to all.

mtman: where are you? No comment on this subject?

  78. tedgere says:

With all due respect, we really need to really think about this one. Look at Mark 16; Ephesians 5 – 6. And consider the revelation that as just ordinary Believers, we are supposed to be helping to bring down Heaven by being that Salt and Light in this World System. This World System is ran by the Devil and has nothing to do with God’s Kingdom.. The Kingdom of Gd is within us. And, it is the Devil that tricks, lies and steals the Church and the Businesses of America into false security by ignoring is Power and Authority here on earth.. If everything is so OK, then why is ther such a mess in America?? What you have just introduced as your PET COW Religion and view is the exact things that HAS PUT THIS COUNTRY TO SLEEP. Now, many are disallumsioned with the deac church of America and when go to the mission field, see God’s men take authority over the Devil and see signs, wonders and miracles as in the Book of Acts. BUT, why is America Dead? BECAUSE OF VEIWPONTS JUST LIKE THIS THAT SAYS GOD IS THE ONE WHO HAS AUTHORITY OVER THE DEVIL.. If that’s true, why has this been so obvious yet the weak church of America DOES BUSINESS AS USUAL AND WE ARE GOING TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET!!! Wake up!! Your redemption draws nigh and Jesus is the Power and it is IN HIS NAME that he gave all power and authority for us to invoke God’s Kingdom in the Midst of a perverse, sick and dying world that is controlled by the Devil.. GET THIS STAIAGHT OR DO NOT TALK ABOUT SOMETHING YOU KNOW LITTLE OF.

  79. tedgere says:

    CONTINUED::

Yes, we can extend and build our faith with Trials and Tests and issues. But, why look to that as our TEACHER?
God does NOT need to test us, or teach us with the Devil’s tactics, lies and false hopes.. Yes, evetually we get to the truth with prayer, revelation, and study of HIS Word.but the TRUTH is still that as Sons and Dauthters of the MOST HIGH JESUS, we have been give HIS authority to walk all over the camp of the Enemy (THE DEVIL) and take back what HE HAS STOLEN. And, not settle for anything less than complete victory, peace, provision, and confidence in HIS ultimate outcome…..which is HIS WORD on the SUBJECT and THAT IS WHAT WE BELIEVE>…. Who are you going to believe?? Jesus and His Word or……Religion???

  80. rokdude5 says:

mjday11 – I know this is off topic but I ll be praying for you come this Sunday, Mother’s Day. No doubt that day will always be an emotional day for you. Even Mary “lost” her son, Jesus.

  81. Mart De Haan says:

mtman, am not sure how to respond because I’m not sure what you are hearing. God calls us to intercede for one another. To plead for others with the confidence that God can answer our prayers is basic to our faith.

The Lord’s Prayer leads us to (1) honor the name of the Lord, to (2) pray that his will would be done, to (3) express daily our dependence on his provisions, to (4) ask for his mercy and for the grace to extend that same mercy to others, and (5) for protection from the Evil One.

All elements of this model prayer reflect a humility of dependence and surrender to God’s gracious and undeserved help. Can see nothing indicating that our Father has transferred the “authority” that he gave his Son– to us.

  82. mtman says:

Cherielyn: I’m back and have posted above. Been gone a couple days due to jury duty, county commissioners meeting and working outside now that the snow has melted.
I believe that bad things happen and that satan can’t take the credit for all of them. I’m not giving him one bit of power he does not already have. Like your computer going down or the first time I wrote this and it disappeared – heading off into cyber space. Satan or just bad luck.
As long as I rest in my Lord’s hand I do not fear satan. He can try but he can’t snatch my soul away from Jesus. He can cause bad things to happen to me but my soul is safely tucked away in my Lord’s hand. That in my opinion is why His last words to us was to go preach the gospel to all creatures. Not all people but all creatures.
So I will be on here less now that the snow is mostly melted. I have much to do outside to be ready for the next winter and all God’s creatures are coming back for more gospel lessons. The bears, wolves, deer, elk, lions, coyotes are coming back and need to hear the gospel. We have far more animals than people so you grow where you are planted. I know how stupid that sounds but when you can stand 10 feet away from a bear, they sit down and listen to you talk and you look into those beady eyes and see no malice it does take on a different meaning for you. Same with deer, and the other critters.
Granted it may not be much of a ministry but its all I have so I will plod on ahead and do what I can. Dr. Dolittle eat your heart out…

  83. mtman says:

Mart: Was it not our Lord who said you marvel at these works that I do, but through the Holy Spirit you will do greater works than these. Doesn’t the Lord’s prayer say deliver us from the evil one? It doesn’t say deliver me from the evil one, but us. Can’t an unbeliveing husband be saved by a believing wife? I think to give satan any power that he does not have erodes the power of our Lord who has claimed us as one of his own. Didn’t our Lord tell us if we had the faith of a mustard seed we could move mountains? Why then should we believe that with the power He has that we couldn’t pray for protection from the evil one for loved ones. Satan holds no power over Him and since we are his he holds no power over us. Maybe we just don’t pray the right things. Couldn’t we pray to our lord that we want our loved ones protected as they are a work in progress? Isn’t that a hedge of sorts. Satan holds no power over us believers. Doesn’t the spiritual warfare really go on for souls? For me I think the power of prayer is for souls and not circumstances although it does sometimes change circumstances. I do not intend to give satan one iota of power that he does not have. Am I wrong here??? I do appreciate your reply but I’m not sure I can agree with you on this subject. I think anything that potentially erodes our faith, prayer, or trust is dangerous. This topic has that power to erode those core values. Not everyone is strong in their belief. I guess that is where I was heading on this topic. Folks can either agree or dis-agree with me, that is part of the growth process in the Lord.

  84. pneumatika says:

BTW: it was Bill that asked about leaving out vowels of writen names of God.

  85. Laurielee says:

I am honestly curious…though we pray for other’s health and people DO recover, why don’t we hear of people jumping up out of wheelchairs and walking? I’m just thinking that if there were many of this kind of healing done, wouldn’t we hear about it in the newspapers? Or Christian newspapers at the very least? Wouldn’t people be flocking there from all over the country, as they did in Jesus’ day?

I’ve been to many “healing” services over the years, but have yet to see a major, visible healing of blindness or lameness.

I HAVE seen major changes in a person’s life when they accepted Jesus. I have seen amazing things happen that could only be G-d’s doing, but never with a man standing in the middle claiming it.

  86. pneumatika says:

daisymarygoldr, I disagree with you that the “supernatural” promises of Mark 16 only apply to people and places where the story of Jesus has not been introduced. Would this mean that those of us not on some “mission field” should no longer “desire spiritual gifts [including tongues], but especially prophecy” (1 Cor 14:1) now that we are part of the “reached”? Should we disregard what James 5:14-15 say about praying for folks in the church for miraculous healing? I do not see how to make any sense of that. It seems to me this idea turns the Bible into an irrelevant book about what God used to do, stuff in the distant past or distant places. I believe that God is continuing to reveal himself today (see Jn 16:7-11 as just one example). And that revelation is that real power and real love is found only in Jesus. To minimize supernatural power (miracles) to somewhere else or some other time is to cheapen the story we were invited to fully participate in.

I am well aware that I do not play my part in the story well. And I observe others getting parts wrong when they “command God” to do things for them or speak things into existence or substitute flamboyance and showmanship for humility and child-like trust in their heavenly Father. But in all of this, the story hasn’t changed. We followers are the ones still learning the story as we play our parts in God’s whole and wonderful story.

  87. poohpity says:

“The devil made me do it” is an easy excuse for choices we make. I do believe that it is the devils main job to turn us away from God or deny God’s existence. Resting in the Lord and the devil will flee seems to be passive but in reality it takes work to rest in the Lord. It takes a honest effort to get to know God and stay close to Him, to fill our minds with things from above. I believe one that makes a commitment to know God and serve Him will have all sorts of things come against them to prevent the relationship from growing (i.e. work, anger, stuff, unforgivably, self, money).

Resting in what Jesus did on the Cross that is how He overcame death and the power of sin. We have no power over satan or anything else in this world the power we do have is to make a choice to believe and trust and that is not even of ourselves our faith is even a gift from God. Humbly looking at ourselves in relation to everything else we know we do not have any power. It takes all our effort to stay focused on God and not be turned to this or that. Truly following after Christ is a tough commitment and it ain’t for sissies it is easy to go to church on Sunday and then live the way we want the rest of the week. Now that is the work of satan.

The hedge that needs to be prayed is that our hearts will be protected and our faith will remain strong to do the will of God. The world is not the way it is because of satan it is because of the choices people have made to deny God.

  88. mtman says:

Laurielee: I just came in and checked this site to get some rest. Lots of heavy work outside that awaits me. Could it be that there are healings but we just don’t hear about them. I see people on TV giving thanks to God for healing them of various forms of disease. And I wonder when we go to these healing services if we ‘want’ healing but don’t take into consideration God’s will. Or do we believe it will ‘happen’ or do we just expect a celestial errand boy in the form of God. This nonsense about not getting healed because we didn’t believe hard enough or have enough faith is pure nonsense. If we have that childlike faith and trust in God for his will instead of imposing our wants and will I think it still might happen. Just my random resting thoughts, now time to get back out there and get more rocks and boulders moved, more trees removed and such. I wonder why I’m still doing this heavy work at my age?? Whew….

  89. Mart De Haan says:

mtman, I agree with you that, “anything that potentially erodes our faith, prayer, or trust is dangerous.” Sounds like we are taking slightly different paths toward the same destination.

God can certainly protect, provide, sustain, deliver, empower, convict, lift up, knock down. Certainly we need to allow, invite, and, if necessary, plead with him to do all of the above.

Presuming such authority for ourselves– by appealing to the name of Christ– as if God in turn is obligated to come through for us– has been known to disappoint, discourage, and even disillusion people who thought they could count on God to guarantee the outcome of their own expectations and hopes… only to find out the hard way that God, for his own reasons, was choosing not to stand by the healing they were claiming.

My guess is that we are not that far apart on the issue.

  90. daisymarygoldr says:

mtman, of course we all pray for God’s protection for us and our families… even upright Job regularly prayed for himself and his children that might have sinned and cursed God unknowingly while partying at each others’ homes. It may be said… that in answer to his prayers he lost all of them.

God protects and He also removes His protection… so that in the end our faith shines out as pure gold tried in fire… so that like Job we will be able to say “though He slay me, yet I will trust on Him”!

mtman, take it easy on the hard work:)… and keep telling the bears and critters about Jesus … no, they are not required to repent and make a decision for Christ but I’m sure they’d appreciate to hear the good news of deliverance from the authority of the devil!

  91. daisymarygoldr says:

I agree, that as Christians we should pray without ceasing…prayer is a privilege and reflects our humble reliance on God.

It is also a privilege for followers of Christ to intercede for the country… as Abraham interceded for Sodom. However, Abraham’s prayer did not fail to acknowledge the sovereignty of God’s justice… “Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Gen 18: 25). By engaging in a heart-to-heart talk with God, Abraham’s faith was also being molded to accept God’s sovereign will for Sodom.

It is interesting to note the sovereign will of God for whole communities and the country in the following passage:

“ … if a country sins against me by being unfaithful and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its men and their animals, even if these three men—Noah, Daniel and Job—were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign LORD. (Eze 14: 12-14)

Intercessory prayer prepares our hearts to accept…not ours but His sovereign will for us and our loved ones. By ceaseless prayers…when we learn to accept God’s sovereign will for our lives… it is only then we display our belief without doubts… that He is God… there are no more questions of whys and what-ifs… it is sound belief that produces works of solid faith… this is what it means to have a living faith (because faith without works is dead)… and this is the faith of Abraham that pleased God… and Abraham was called the friend of God!

  92. daisymarygoldr says:

Rick123, I agree that we overcome in the finished work of Christ… by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word. Sorry, I do not see any scriptural basis of praying authority over the devil by applying or sprinkling the blood of Jesus on people…

    formandpower,
It is true that God allows satan to sift us… but I’m curious about “the tools to take power and authority over satan in our lives and the lives of those God put into our lives”.

By saying tools, are you referring to Eph 6 which you mentioned a little later in your comment… and is it to “take” power? As far as I know all believers (babes or mature) are already empowered with the Holy Spirit and are called to put on the whole armor of God… that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Other than that, what sort of training and understanding are you recommending? How does one become good at being obedient in the area of spiritual warfare with maturity and where does one get the practice? Sorry, I’m not able to fully grasp your implication…

  93. mtman says:

Mart: It does sound like we are closer together on this than I thought. From my perspective however I have my eyes straight ahead on that cross. When I was younger I tended to engage in discussion and debate but now that I’m much older (in body, not spirit,) I tend to focus dead ahead and not weave around as much on that path to the cross. I don’t feel I have that many years left to consider much else. We’ll for sure be at the same place in the end and if it is still an issue then we can perch on a cloud with legs hanging over the edge and resolve it. Thank you for responding to me and the reassurance it gave me.

  94. daisymarygoldr says:

pneumatika, I am completely with you on James 5:14-15… i.e. no, we should not disregard praying for sick folks in the church…. the church is indeed a mission field… as there are many non Christians who desperately need the Holy Spirit’s healing touch to revive… not only the physical but more importantly their dead spiritual lives.

It is OK if you disagree with me… however, I don’t see any reason for you to disagree with me on Mark 16… it does not mention tongues and prophecy… sorry if my comment gave you that impression. Since, you mentioned it… I believe that it is a supernatural gift for me to converse with you on this blog… in English! Given the fact, that it is not my native tongue and we do not converse in this language at home. My English teacher and my poor grades are a perfect witness to my command over this “tongue” which is still “unknown” to many members of my extended family.

pneumatika, in having this dialogue with you…I’m really thankful to the Lord for allowing me to use this spiritual gift of “tongues” for the edification of the body of Christ… and yes, you are right “We followers are the ones still learning the story as we play our parts in God’s whole and wonderful story”. Welcome to the blog… that Pneumatika guy!

Mart, How do you explain John 14:12,13&14?

:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
:13And whatsoeve ye shall ask in my name, that will I do; that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
:14 If you ask anything in my name I will do it.

    Steve,
When there are two or more joined in Jesus’s name there He will be also.

  98. SFDBWV says:

Very true Deb, I for one, believe very strongly that there is great power in prayer. Which is why I can bring the most seemingly impossible things to God, in prayer. I believe he hears and wants to give us the desires of our hearts.

I also believe he wants the best for us and will grant our requests as long as they are in concert with His will and not hidered by selfish motives.

The entire dialog found in Genesis between God and Abraham concerning Sodam and Gamorah shows that for the sake of just one, God will withhold his wrath.

Being in prayer brings us into the Holy presence of God. He not only allows it He made a way for us at a terrible cost to Himself.

I put no limits on God, He is able to do anything. Heal, restore and make whole any that He will. It is not misplaced hope when a crippled person comes before God and asks for healing….It is Hope, it is Faith, and that person seeks help from the one who is able to give peace where no one else can.

Prayer, the power to begin change, to unlock doors, to open the windows of heaven. A personal conversation with God.

  99. mtman says:

Steve: Your points are great. John 12:13-14-15 are what I was looking for and couldn’t find. I’m thinking Mart is going in the right direction but I think he may be driving on the shoulder of the road. I’m going to go and rest, mulching tree limbs is hard work at this altitude. Good posts by you…… and how sad that more didn’t show up to celebrate our opportunity to pray. Boycot National Prayer day????

  100. poohpity says:

He answers even if it is no sometimes and that is where the trust comes in. I have had many no’s, yes’s and wait’s. God can see the whole picture behind, current and the future so He knows what the best choice is. There have been many times I am so glad he said no but I did not realize until down the road why God said no. It would have lead to a horrible ending. Our selfishness wants everything right now and our way thank God He says NO.

  101. pegramsdell says:

So do we have authority over the devil? Can we say “get thee behind me satan”? What could Job have done if he knew what was going on?

  102. poohpity says:

No we do not have authority over the devil but God does. Can we say get behind me satan, sure we can say whatever we want but it is only God who has the authority to push satan out of the way. If Job knew what was going on I think he would have still never denied God.

  103. SFDBWV says:

pegramsdell, Yes we can say “Get thee behind me satan” We can do so in the name of Jesus Christ. It is the power of God and the promise of Jesus Christ that we can. I will say it again Satan has no power over us that we do not surrender to him.

Satan ask to sift Peter, but I have never read where he was allowed to.

“For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Hi everyone, I’m new to this blog. I’ve been receiving Our Daily Bread for years now, but only just heard about this blog. I think Mart makes good points regarding our daily battle with Satan, especially being Christians. Things only get worse as far as attacks go. But thank the Lord, we have him to lean on and go to for protection. And to Mark L. I too was very sad to hear our President didn’t have any kind of breakfast or at least mention the National Day of Prayer as it was always observed in years past. He indeed needs our prayers.

  105. Laurielee says:

    Welcome, Lee!

Our town is about 27,000…we had probably 40-50 come to our NDOP event in the city square. All ages. I agree that we need to keep not only our country, but our president, government, church, and children in prayer daily.

  106. laney says:

Lee1944, you are right we do need to pray for Barack Hussein Obama. He may have professed to be a christian during his campaign but from all the things I have been reading lately his actions are saying differently…

  107. Mart De Haan says:

SFDBWV, Seems to me that John 14:12,13&14 must have been speaking of acts of spiritual service to others that, from God’s perspective, are greater than walking on water, feeding 5000 with a few pieces of fish and bread, raising the dead etc.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary takes that approach when it says, that “doing in my name” means doing what is in line with God’s will.

In addition this commentary suggests on “14:12-14. The apostles would not necessarily do more stupendous miracles than Jesus did (e.g., feeding 5,000) but their outreach would be greater (e.g., Peter in one sermon had 3,000 converts). This was possible because Jesus had gone to the Father and had sent the Spirit. Miracles are important, but some evangelists have done even greater things than these by preaching the good news to many thousands of people.”

Also on Satan’s request to sift Peter, I have taken that as reflecting what happened in Peter’s denial of Jesus (see Luke 22:31,32). The Lord seemed to indicate that he was allowing Satan to test Peter, but was limiting Satan, saying, “But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

Peter’s faith did not fail in the end (he was later restored)… and did “strengthen his brethren”

  108. poohpity says:

I read that passage in John earlier today and it seemed like it was focusing on Jesus’s true identity. So I was praying and asking for wisdom to understand it better. Gosh these are the kinda things I like to talk about. It is so interesting to peel the layers back and look at what was being said before and after a passage.

mtman: Jury duty! You’re luck. I love jury duty. Have had the opportunity to be called twice in my lifetime. Hope it comes around my way again.

County Commissioner’s meeting? Please explain. (I have a reason for asking).

  110. gdsbls says:

    To Mark L

After reading your testimony the first thing that came to me, was maybe God is trying to use this thorn for you to minister/witness to others that bear the same thorn. Have you tried seeking out a recovery group?

I have a thorn and it’s alcohol. Not a bad habit – maybe one or two beers a night – but it’s still out of God’s will for my life. I use it as a crutch, when I should be leaning on God. So for me, when I feel myself becoming weak I start to pray right then for strenghth, then if possible I just starting reading the bible. It works.

Also, I lost my job in January after twelve years of dedicated service. Two days later I started a 21 day fast – Jentzeen Franklin. WOW – that truely changed my entire prayer walk with Christ. Without the Lord, I would be a full fledged alcholic by now.

I am not perfect – will never be. God knows this, and as long as I put God first and come to him earnstly, He will never leave me nor forsake me. I am so thankful that I have someone in my life I go to for everything.

Keep the faith. God hears you.

  111. bubbles143jc says:

Once again Mart, I am so thankful to the Lord for you and this ministry. It’s faithfulness is amazing.

I’m going on 60, met Jesus in 1993 and fell in love and we have been together ever since – imagine, I love him more today than that first day!

I’ve had good teachers and study the word myself and now, thanks to you I am clear on how to fight this devil – I WILL come closer to Abba through His word.

I’ve been fighting the devil (my thorn) and using the name of Jesus to defeat him. Now I see clearly how wrong I’ve been but no longer! Again, thanks and God bless.

bretnb, glory to God, I understand just how you feel! God bless you abundently.

  112. pegramsdell says:

Yes I realize we can say whatever we want. Thanks for that. :)
Thanks Steve, for getting what I was asking.

  113. mtman says:

Cherielyn: I was attending a commission meeting due to our association telling the county that their laws did not apply to them. They threaten and retaliate against us members if we object and they are doing much in violation of covenants and State law. One board member stood up at the commission meeting and threatened us members. Then he got his vengence the very next day. I wanted to see how the county dealt with blatant violators and they did well and ruled against the assoc. board. Justice prevails and I had been praying that our Lord would do just that so maybe one day our community can be a Godly community again. Right now it is clearly controlled by satan and his demons. The mountains are called the Sangre de Cristos which is the blood of Christ. Isn’t it ironic that they would be under the influence and control of satan?

  114. Charis says:

    Wow, lots of replies!

I was pondering some of the discussion… Seems to me that the “name it and claim it” stuff resembles trying to be “god” of one’s own world, to maintain power/control. For several weeks now, I have been thinking about Paul’s statement in Corinthians that
    we have this treasure in jars of clay;
    we are
hard pressed on every side, but not crushed
    perplexed but not in despair
    persecuted but not abandoned
    struck down but not destroyed…

He goes on to speak of the death at work within us. None of that sounds like a bed of roses, and Paul is definitely an “apostle”

Jesus PROMISED “in the world you will have tribulation”… and continued “but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world”.

Paul says in Romans “who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword? NO, in ALL THESE THINGS we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us”

There’s no “word of faith” that will spare us from “these things” but there is The Love of Christ who will tenderly shepherd us through even the valleys, and maybe we are more aware of Him in those valleys? So the valleys are not wasted.

  115. cherielyn says:

mtman: Reason I asked about the County Commissioners meeting is because I have been serving as a County Board Supervisor here in WI for the past 17 years and thought perhaps you were also.

We are called Supervisors rather than Commissioners in WI. MI is just across the river from the city our courthouse is in and in MI they are called Commissioners.

Glad to hear that the outcome of the meeting was favorable.

  116. risen says:

My one experience with the hedge of protection, started when I was alone in my livingroom and there was a loud banging on the outside wall that shook the pictures. I rang upstairs and looked out my bedroom window expecting to see footprints in the fresh snow. There was none, but my neighbors backyard light blinked 3 times. Knowing she was a Christian, I ran over explained what happened and about seeing her light flashing. She said no one turned the back lights on. We prayed together. As I left her place, the Lord asked that I walk around my place (this included 6 units in the complex) and to raise my right hand. He would give the words. So I did, hoping no one else was witnessing this. The words were of a different language and they came with authority. Once the circle was complete, I was asked (with my right hand still held high) to now make a sweeping motion with my left hand. I did and then the words ceased. I returned home and asked the Lord what this was for. He showed that he created a bloodline that the enemy can see and cannot cross, the sweeping motion covered the rooftop with His blood. There was no more banging on the walls. When you need a hedge, He will let you know and He’ll provide.
I later learned about the armour. I was told at a conference to get up every morning and put my armour on and recite the armour list of scriptures. I felt foolish after a few days of putting on this imaginary armour that I said to the Lord, I’ll do this everyday if I need to, but I just want to know, where in the night did my armour fall off, I’d rather deal with that issue. This began my teaching on the armour. Scriptures asks that we are to “put on” the “full armour of God”. This we do by faith. According to the description of faith, there are 2 parties responsible for the completion of faith. First is us, “believing in things unseen”….the second is God, “It Is The Evidence of Things Hoped For”. We are called to action, God brings the substance. “Put on” is our responsibility, our call to action. “Full Armour of God” is the substance or evidence of things hoped for, belonging to God, it is His responsibility, the finisher of our faith. Take every piece of armour (the substance) and put it into action. eg. Put on the helmet of salvation, our responsibility is the action of salvation, to “walk” in our salvation, Gods responsibility, (the latter of faith) is to manifest the helmet (the evidence of things hoped for). After I applied every piece of armour to this, I was asked the question, What does all of these actions represent? My answer, walking in the Spirit. So I read on, the scriptures continue with “and also pray in the spirit”.
The enemy just needs one glance to know where we are not being led by the Spirit (but of ourselves), he sees what armour is and is not manifested. Remember too, the Glory of the Lord is our rear guard. It is the will of God that we walk continually by the spirit and the armour will be manifested, as promised.
One day, the Jehovah Witnesses had come to my door and they wanted to return to continue the discussion. As soon as they left, I ran upstairs to grab the Bible and literature on what the Jehovah Witnesses believed and be ready but instead, I was interrupted with the words, put your weapon down. I was then reminded that the Word of God is used as a weapon (our sword) only against the principalities not people. When these people return they will be met with love, not the sword. (I wanted to catch them on some scripture and God knew)
When it comes to dealing with demons, scripture says that the Battle belongs to the Lord. In otherwords, he is the Head Commander and Chief, we are the army, following His instructions. I have understood that the sword is both the Word of God written and the Word of God spoken. It is the Lord that will give you the words to speak and it will be in agreement with His words already written. Trust me in this, the enemy knows when you are spouting off scriptures from memory and when you are speaking those same scriptures as instructed by God. He can see the armour. Don’t be mislead, the enemy is never defeated by our words alone without Gods authority. Praise God, for His protection, when I was in the learning process He bailed me out when I was surely an open target. Remember our Authority is In Christ, not of ourselves, we are no match for the enemy on our own. Casting out demons is one of the signs listed that follow those who believe. This is not given to certain people, but to all who believe, so be ready. Jesus does not come into your life and leave His power behind. If there is ever a time that it is required, the Lord will direct the whole thing. (My first experience was a crash course and the fastest silent praying I’ve ever done. What started out in witnessing to a person, ended up with a demon manifesting. The only thing I knew other than sheer panic, was that the Lord was with me. I was not aware of any step by step procedures. The demon mocked every part of my walk with the Lord, in which I responded with words given to me. I hadn’t read these scriptures yet myself, but that didn’t matter. It didn’t lessen the power of effect against the demon. Each time Gods Words was spoken, the demon was silenced and he picked another subject. I knew of my complete helplessness, and lack of knowledge and it was easy to hand it all over to the Lord to deal with, I had nothing to offer but myself and that is all that God wanted. I witnessed the awesome Power and the Authority of God, getting to know Him even more.
It is all summed up in this, He calls you to a relationship to walk with Him. With Jesus as our example of His relationship with His Father, He spoke only the words His Father gave Him and did only what He saw His Father doing. Walking in the Spirit is being in this same relationship, He wants this same relationship with you. God doesn’t need us to cast out demons or heal the sick, He could do it without us, but what a privilage it is that He just wants to be with us, to share these moments with us, by revealing Himself to us, through us and sharing in the victory that belongs to Him. He just wants to be with you and others will want what you have.
    One final word of encouragement
“Be still and know that I am God”

  118. foreverblessed says:

The topic is quite old, but I have thought a long time about it, and decided to tell my story. I was quite irritated too about those christians that order demons around. But this is what happened to me: I was in trouble, and depressed, but cried to God, He heard me, sent me to a christian womans ministry, there I was helped, found healing for my troubled soul, found Jesus as my Saviour. I cried a lot, especially when the singing started. As soon as the music began it touched my heart. and every time I cried it was as if more of a burden was taken of from me. Crying was like cleansing of the soul. tears of the soul. After 3 years it was OK. I was healed. My soul was restored.
But the problem was: I still was crying. And it was a puzzle to me. I had prayed about it. Then there was another meeting, at the singing I started to cry, and someone else too. The woman who was preaching that day stopped, and asked us to come forward, she prayed for us, she asked a couple of questions, dont remember ecaxtly which, one of them was: did you forgive everybody who had hurt you? Yes we did.
Then she put her hand on my stumach, and oredered a spirit of grieve to go away. The same she did with the girl next to me. It was all done very fast.
I wandered. At home I felt a bit empty inside. But the nwanted crying stopped.
So here I was, a spirit of grieve I had harboured, and didnt know. And now it was gone. because someone had a discernment of spirits. And had used authority God has given us. She had helped me.
I am very gratefull about it. And very humble too, that I had a spirit.
But that was a very good lesson to me, because I often thought: -people say they couldnt help it they were too angry. It was too powerfull for them to resist.-
And now I know that that can be true. They need deliverance.
Maybe not always with the help of other people, but by:
coming near to God and resit the devil, James 4:7. We have to resist negative thoughts, doubtfull thoughts. Send those thoughts away. Dont let them get control in your life. Pray out loud yourself and send negative things away.
A lot of things do go wrong in churches, but that doesnt mean we do not have to look into these things.
Hope this will help some of you.

Personally, I stay away from him. If I think he has planted an idea in my consciousness (it is not a thought I originated), I simply pray to the Holy Spirit to protect me.

It works for me, I am not so foolish to think I can outsmart him, I simply want his to leave me alone.

I have enough trouble dealing with my sinful nature without his unwelcome interference.

  120. ChrisB says:

I sometimes have very disturbing dreams, as if there are “evil spritual forces”, (I don’t know if they are demons or the devil, just that I sense evil)trying to attack me and in my dreams I cry out, in the name of Jesus, or by the blood of Jesus, or Jesus lives, to keep the forces at bay. I don’t know if praying “hedges” works, but I was raised to believe there is power in the blood and name of Jesus and maybe it is this “teaching” that is in my subconcious that comes to mind and saves me in my dreams but who else do we turn for protection? The Lord’s prayer says, “Deliver us from evil”, what is evil, if not the devil? I do believe we cannot “rebuke” the devil or order him around, but can we pray that the Lord rebuke the devil”?
