What’s in that Jar of Water?

When you enter the city, you will see a man with a jar of water. Follow him to the house where he goes. Tell the owner of the house the Teacher needs a room to have a meal with his friends. He will show you a large, furnished upstairs room. Make preparations there.

I wonder what emotion Peter and John felt when they walked into Jerusalem, saw the man with the jar of water, followed him to a house, and to the furnished upstairs room? Did they look at one another with amazement and say, “do you believe it? Just like he said” (Luke 22:8-13).

The countdown had begun. Satan had already entered Judas who then met secretly with religious leaders who were trying to find the right time and place to kill Jesus. For 30 pieces of silver the trusted treasurer (John 13:29) offered to turn Jesus over to killers– at a place where the crowds would not be a problem (Luke:22:3-6).

And what about that water pot. Was anything in it besides water?

Could it be full of significance for anyone who might be tempted to think that the death we remember today represents a miscalculation by Jesus or a cruel twist of fate?

Mart, You have brought to bear a question that does have an answer…

My first response to you, is that Jesus already said that there is, water in the jar.

But I know from studying the scripture that the Word of God is layered with deeper and deeper meanings.

My second thought was of the water of life, that Christ promises all who believe on Him.

However I bet if one digs deeper into the Old Testement there will be a connection found concerning the matter.

Your very last thought Mart, about miscalculations or twists of fate, has no place in any of Jesus’s life, actions or accomplisments. Jesus was never at the mercy of such forces. He overcame all.

There is a huge disagreeable discussion that could be brought forward about the entire matter of whether or not any of the people and players in the story of the last supper, the betrayal, the passion, and crucifiction of Christ, ever had a real choice in their actions and place in the events.

Including the man with the jar of water.

Just two thoughts that come to me.
It would be more likely to see a woman carrying a water pot so the man was probably some sort of servant.
Also the man with the waterpot, it appears was not actually the owner of the house, they were being told to follow the servant of the owner of the house.
No conclusions here, just some thoughts as I am getting dressed for Good Friday service.

  3. Puddleglum says:

Oh yes. The question was what was in the waterpot. Could it be…….water?

  4. Lively says:

Steve, the other points, I can’t speak to – but I feel very strongly about your comment regarding freewill. They each had a choice just as we have choices. Just because God knows what we are going to do doesn’t mean we didn’t have the choice to do something different – it simply means that He knows what we’ll choose to do.

I’m not even sure why everybody gets all up in arms about this anyway. People only get upset about it when you add God into the mix. It’s common for non Christians to say things are “fated” to happen without a qualm.

Another lovely day to garden. Though, today’s work isn’t as enjoyable. Moving the rose garden. Need to build a small rock wall and prep for the soil I’ll get tonight or tomorrow! Yippie skippie :-)

  5. SFDBWV says:

Tw0 more thoughts come from, the possible meaning of the water in the jar..

Abraham gave bread and a bottle of water to Hagar before sending her and Ishmael into the desert…

Also Jesus turned the water into wine at Cana…

Making me look and think, Mart…

  6. SFDBWV says:

In John 13, beginning at verse 26 and continuing through 27, Judas Iscariot is identified as the one who would betray Jesus, after he dipped his bread in the sop…Satan entered him and Jesus says to to him “That thou doest, do quickly”

Was Satan the agent through which God’s will was done?Or was it Judas because he was open to recieve Satan? Or the combination of both?

Stacy, I too agree that we have free will. However the scripture is rife with examples of God interfering with free will and changing the mind of others in order to have His will accomplished.

We are not disagreing Stacy, I am only putting forth an idea for thought.

  7. xrgarza says:

Good morning all, I’m enjoying all of your thoughts this morning Steve great insight. Thank you.

My thoughts are similar in that that when I was a child we would sing this song in church I’m not sure what it was called but part of the lyrics were “like a tree planted by the water, I shall not be moved”

The water in that song I was taught that it was a river, and when I think of a river especially a flowing river I think of the Holy Spirit who flows through us.

Now we know that the Holy Spirit is within us, and as spirit filled Christians we say that we are led by the Spirit, so we should follow the Spirit’s leading. Similar to the instructions Jesus had for his disciples. Could He have been saying/teaching a principle to follow the Spirit?

In addition what are we? We are but Jars of Clay.

    I love you guys,
My mother’s service was like a wedding it was so beautiful, she would have loved it. Thank you again for all of your prayers.

  8. saled says:

What did Jesus use the water in the jar for? Was it taken to the upper room?

  9. xrgarza says:

PS: the jar was symbolic of us, and the water was symbolic of the Holy Spirit. And the man they were following was symbolic of the Jesus teaching the disciples to follow His teachings. (The disciples were not symbolic)

    Rocky

  10. xrgarza says:

Not “the Jesus”, but simply “Jesus”, my fingers were faster than my thoughts.

  11. foreverblessed says:

Thanks to Jesus and what He did, we can go to Paradise.
Xrgarza, isn’t that beautifull, I call it a weddign too. My mother-in-laws funeral was like a wedding! And they are in Paradise now! We can rejoice about them!
Allthough at times I am in grieve because right now they are missed here. But thinking how beautifull paradise must be for them does help me. They are in a good place.

What a nice symbolism of the clay pot and water and us.
I didn’t have a clue where the question of Mart would lead to, so was curious what others would come up with.

But the question was: could it be of significance to those who doubt about Jesus’death?
Mart, do you have an idea about it?

There are so many scriptures in the old testament that point to Jesus and how He would die, that it is hard to not see that.
Everything was planned. So was Judah, and I like Steve’s thought, did Judah have a choice, or will he have a choice later?
(Like God hardened the hard of Pharao not to let the Israelites go out of Egypt.)
I also know that God is full of mercy, full of Grace and that He is the Judge. I will trust Him in His judgments.

  12. poohpity says:

Could we put more significance on the water pot rather than it being a direction from an all knowing God for directions to the place to have the Last Supper? Yes, we could. Can we use it to say that all that was about to happen to Jesus was a miscalculation or a cruel twist of fate as Mart gave us thought? Yes, I guess one could except that in John 10:18 days before Jesus said, “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again”. So was it fate, yes because that is what Jesus came for. Was it a miscalculation, no, it was the intended purpose for Jesus coming into flesh from Deity.

So whatever we may think was in the water pot or the significance of the water pot it may have just been that an all knowing God knew that there would be a man there with a water pot. Sometimes a water pot is just a water pot.

  13. poohpity says:

John 15:13, 13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

  14. rokdude5 says:

Thanks Mart, for bringing this up. Now that you brought it up, I found it intriguing that the Scriptures made mentioned of this.

Here you have Jesus talking about having a Seder. His disciples were puzzled where can they hold the event. (True to form for a lot of us guys – clueless about making arrangements for a supper.) Jesus had made all the arrangements and He needed to have the way to the Seder made clear by having the disciples meet with “…a man holding a pitcher of water.”

hmm…why a pitcher of water? It could have been an empty pitcher or even a guy carrying a chicken but…its a pitcher of water. I looked at the King James Version and the Young’s Literal translations. Both didnt articulate a water pitcher but a pitcher of water. Now Im thinking about baptisms, ceremonial cleansings, the Samaritan woman with muliple husbands, when a Roman stabbed Jesus and …. a birth.

To me this is a foreshadowing of what is to come in the next few days. When we are baptized, we are putting to death our old selves and a new person is borned!

Brothers and sisters…Have a Joyous Easter! “RJ”

  15. poohpity says:

The pitcher of water may have been the very one that Jesus used to wash the feet of the disciples in the upper room to teach them that He did not come to be served but to serve. Showing us this example to follow. John 13

  16. pegramsdell says:

God orchestrated the whole thing perfectly. He took care of every detail. This I know, because that’s the way He does things. Never leave out anything. The tied up colt, the guy with the water, the upper room…..all part of His plan. Just like the moment we said “I do” to Him, and asked Him into our hearts. He knew and rejoiced with all of heaven. Amazing! He is SO good.

  17. poohpity says:

    Amen, peg.

God has a carefully orchestrated plan and it will be carried out whether we are in a place to used by Him or not.

  18. Bob in Cornwall England says:

Deb, you got there before me.
As I was reading through the comments the “foot washing” was what sprang to mind. But lets not get too technical here, as on a purely practical point of view, they would have needed water to wash there hands while eating the passover feast.
I also assume that some arrangements had been made to order the food and and sacraficial lamb etc.
I wonder if in those days you could “pre-order” a passover a bit like we can go to a restaurant for Christmas dinner.
    Just a thought!

    Bob
ps. I am working long hours all over easter, thank God He is providing fo me and the months of idleness are over.

  19. SFDBWV says:

I haven’t been able to spend as much time as I would like researching this issue, But I did come accross an interesting piece in Leviticus 14, starting at verse 33 God gives instruction as to how to cleanse a house of leprosy.

How the house is scraped clean and all the dust and stones of the house taken outside the city, how two birds are taken, one killed in an earthen vessel over running water then take the living bird along with other items and dip them in the blood of the sacrificed bird. Followed by the sprinkling of the house 7 times.

The living bird is then set free to live outside the city, the house now being clean.

This has been the best Easter weather I have seen in a long while. I am enjoying it….without complaint.

  20. SFDBWV says:

Wanted to also quote 1 John:4 ” For whosever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

:5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is Truth.

:7 For there are three things that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

:8And there are three that bear witness on earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.”

  21. Grace48 says:

What catches my attention in Mart’s new topic is the part about the disciples maybe saying,”do you believe it, just like He said”.

Jesus is amazing, God is amazing.

So often the disciples probably said or thought that over and over and probably said or shouted that at seeing Jesus back from the dead, as we all do on Easter, and as we all will when Jesus comes back again.

Even in all the negative, hard stuff of life,am still saying,”do you believe it, just like He said”, so often and so gratefully. In faith, I guess I should “know better” and just know that God can do all things and nothing is impossible with God, but I live in this”tent of flesh” and am still learning step by step in life to trust Jesus more and more, with all of God’s help.

Jesus’ patience amazes me too and am guessing He still likes to see the bright look of amazement that comes to each of our eyes when or on our faces when we say or think those words”do you believe it, just like He said”.

Thanks, Mart, again for another oppurtunity to think more and deeper.

To all here : have a blessed Easter.

    Susann

  22. smuschanow says:

Good one. This might be a good example of what happens when we take our eyes off Jesus and try to justify the Gospel with our own interpretation.

What’s wrong with just accepting the fact that Jesus gave an instruction to follow, described the exact way to recognize the right way to follow it, and leave it at that? The Bible is as simple as that to those who chose to follow Him. It shows us exactly how to get where God wants us to go: go here, look for that, and just follow. Jesus may have just wanted to demonstrate that He knows all the answers and didn’t want His diciples to end up going the wrong way.

When we try to figure out what’s in the jug of water, don’t we loose sight of the simple truth of Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life?

Sorry if this was not on topic. Am still reading through all of this. Just commenting on the amazement part of all that Jesus did, does and will do( as the shaken up by life’s happenings, yet believing Christian that is me)

  24. SFDBWV says:

Susann, You are so right. How many times do I find myself amazed at the presence and hand of God shown clearly to me in my own life.

As if it were the first time I realized His miracle’s and involvement in my own affairs.

Yes I agree, I think, our Heavenly Father is like any pleased father when He sees the look of enlightenment and wonder in His children’s faces.

  25. Puddleglum says:

Thank you, “Another Steve.” Finally someone I can identify with. I was thinking that Jesus could have said,”Look for a guy in a blue shirt and follow him home.
I think the water jar was simply to identify the guy they were supposed to follow.

  28. InHisHands says:

    Dear BTA friends,

I pray that each and everyone of you are blessed richly by our loving Savior during this time of Resurrection Celebrating. “He lives and He is coming again”

The comments you have all expressed have blessed my heart and given me more to ‘chew’ on.

I think about our Lord’s instructions concerning the ‘colt that was never ridden by man’- and how it ^again^ demonstrated Christ’s power over nature. An unbroken colt does not simply allow anyone to sit on its back without a fight – yet, Jesus rode it into Jerusalem ‘triumphantly’.

Our omniscient God never does anything out of order – any instructions He has given in Scripture has always been exact and precise. That is His character, one we ought to strive to have for ourselves.

When thinking deeper about the possibility of any of the actions through Scripture, amazement is the only way for me to describe how symbolic many of those actions are. The water in the jug, may well have been just water – but I like thinking about the possibility that the LORD was giving us something to look at and think about – and the deeper understanding that you have offeered here in your comments have stirred me to an even greater appreciation of all that Jesus did and every step He took on ‘my’ (our) behave.

It may be “Friday”, but SUNDAY is on the way – when we sing “HE LIVES, HE LIVES, CHRIST JESUS LIVES TODAY…”

    Lord bless you all

  29. poohpity says:

Ken, LOL! If there was ever an “Always Right Group” I would have to go the other direction.

Bob, about the passover meal the two disciples were told to prepare the meal also. So the were on KP duty (kitchen patrol). That is in Matthew 26:19, Luke 22:12,13, Mark 14:15. The lambs were already being slaughtered and this was happening Thursday morning for that night.

    Mart,
I have to ask a question that is off topic but I wonder if you can help me find an answer. Last night there was a show on that as far as I am concerned was so not biblical but I could be really wrong in my conclusion that is why I want to ask. It was 20/20 about praying to dead saints or priests and them putting a good word in for someone to God. I am so shocked that these folks were not directed by their church that Jesus is our intercessor not any human being. Is there any place in scripture that even resembles anything like that if there is I have never read it. Help me out here. I get so confused when men/women of the cloth say this stuff. Do you know of any scripture to back it up?

  30. poohpity says:

Jorge, we were posting at the same time but I just wanted to say that was a new thought for me about “He Wept” regarding Lazarus coming back to this life. Something to think about, thanks.

  31. poohpity says:

I was interested in the part about Lazarus leaving death which is a better place to come back to this existence and it may have been a reason that Jesus wept. I always believed it was because of their lack of faith and the loss of His friend and the compassion he was feeling along with them in their loss. You know like morning with them. I guess that will be a question to ask when we see Him face to face if we even care at that time.

  32. smuschanow says:

Thanks for getting my point, Puddleglum. There’s nothing deep and mystical about simple instructions. If Jesus wanted us to search for a deeper meaning that only His disciples could decipher, He would have spoken a parable.

Folks have a tendency to over-think the obvious. I have a feeling a lot of unbelievers don’t accept the truth because it gets obscured by all those “facts.” Salvation is a gift of grace obtained through our faith in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The prophets of old pointed to that truth and Jesus fulfilled it. That’s it in a nutshell.

    As the acronym goes, KISS…

  33. phpatato says:

Why did Jesus use the man with the jar of water as directions for His disciples? Why not the colour of the house or even the street name/number..which is a more permanent and stationary thing. Why the colt tied up in the street?

Did Jesus use uncommon “landmarks” to wow His disciples; to increase their faith? They would have had to marvel within themselves and remember His words: (John 14:11) Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

    just a thought

    Pat

  34. poohpity says:

Jorge, I found it so interesting your thoughts, that was all. I had no point to make in the lest. There was nothing behind any word I said to you other than what you said was thought provoking. I do not hide behind any pretense. I am not here to please anyone or get any atta girls. I joined this blog to think about the topics then share because at the moment I am stuck in my home and this is my only outlet. Thank you for the feedback and I will consider what you say because there is always wisdom in criticism.

  37. poohpity says:

    Confused on the 8 thing.

  38. pegramsdell says:

Maybe He wept because of their unbelief. Or their lack of faith. IDK….I like your thoughts Jorge. I’m glad you are here.

    It’s sideways… 8^)

  40. afranz says:

    Pooh, eyeballs=8
KJV has pitcher, not jar. Hm.
The guy who had it “meets” the disciples, then they follow him to where he’s going. Also, hm.
Keeping it as simple as I can.
    It’s been an interesting read.
Hope everyone has a blessed Easter.

  41. poohpity says:

Well just call me silly, lol. Sometimes I just do not get it. lol. I had a hard time with lol when I first learned that, goes to show ya don’t it.
