When you enter the city, you will see a man with a jar of water. Follow him to the house where he goes. Tell the owner of the house the Teacher needs a room to have a meal with his friends. He will show you a large, furnished upstairs room. Make preparations there.
I wonder what emotion Peter and John felt when they walked into Jerusalem, saw the man with the jar of water, followed him to a house, and to the furnished upstairs room? Did they look at one another with amazement and say, “do you believe it? Just like he said” (Luke 22:8-13).
The countdown had begun. Satan had already entered Judas who then met secretly with religious leaders who were trying to find the right time and place to kill Jesus. For 30 pieces of silver the trusted treasurer (John 13:29) offered to turn Jesus over to killers– at a place where the crowds would not be a problem (Luke:22:3-6).
And what about that water pot. Was anything in it besides water?
Could it be full of significance for anyone who might be tempted to think that the death we remember today represents a miscalculation by Jesus or a cruel twist of fate?
