Two Sides of Giving Thanks

Today is a national American holiday that reminds us to give thanks to the God of the harvest.

Yet the season of Thanksgiving often turns into an occasion to express personal gratefulness at the expense of someone else.

What I’m wondering is whether it is possible to publicly give thanks to God in a way that does not add to the burden of those who believe that God has withheld from them what he has given to us?

Who can deny that one of the most difficult experiences of life may be to hear others thank God for what he has done for them, while wondering why he has not done the same for us?

On the other hand, is it possible to be truly grateful when our table is bare while the table of others is full?

Docked Crab Traps

The two sides I’m thinking about have to do with the personal implications of a national holiday that is both complicated and blessed by the fact that in this blog and  conversation we sit together at a very large table– where the person sitting next to, or across from us, may be many nations and circumstances away.

PS Some of these same thoughts came to mind recently as I was absorbed in taking pictures of hundreds of crab traps stacked on boats and docks of a west coast marina. As I clicked away, a voice behind me said, “Look pretty sitting on the dock don’t they? Wish we could get them in the water.” I turned around to hear a professional fisherman tell me how crews like his had gone on strike because they could no longer afford the costs they were being charged by those above them in the food chain.

Obviously, I don’t know the whole story of their strike. But was struck by the fact that what looked like an interesting picture to me… was stirring up very different emotions in someone who saw a very different picture than I did.

    Good Morning,
    This got me thinking about how much of what people say or do can stir others in personal ways. Been trying to thank God more often for things I take for granted. In my community, I’ve seen people sharing food, and essentials which prompts me to give more.

    Happy United States Thanksgiving Day to all.

    Our Blessed Scripture is full of references of thankfulness given toward God, and the tradition of this Thanksgiving Day holiday is founded in thanks given to God by Christian pilgrims who were thankful for surviving and having a good crop and being in a new land.

    Like Christmas, and Easter, Thanksgiving has been corrupted by not just an unbelieving culture, but by those whom I call anti- Christ because they work hard at keeping the holiday without reference to why it is a holiday.

    I am always reminded of Elijah when my thoughts come to such matters, that no matter how depraved our society has become, there are always a remnant that does not bow down to the worship of the world.

    For that I am most Thankful.

    As for feeling guilty about having plenty while others don’t, I always try and have someone to dinner today as well as at other times throughout the year in order to share the plenty that God provides all the time for us. So I may wish I could do more, but I do what I can.

    As for thinking about why others have more than I, I don’t.

    I count my blessings and am grateful for them and for God.

    The gift of sight God has given me allows for me to see the blessings in my life and be thankful for them, not dwell on the struggles of life except for the fact that even through struggles I can see God’s hand upon our lives, and continue to be thankful He is always faithful.

    As for the segue from crab pots to strikes and to Thanksgiving….Well as Art Rooney sometimes said “That’s another story”.

    The largest crabbing outfits can afford high-tech gear, the fuel and the workers to haul in early in the season. They roll out of the docks with big loads of crab, headed for the best markets, where there will be a fair return on investment. Small crabbers may have few boats, or even one boat. They cannot fish the volume, nor transport the distances for best prices. Crab fishermen, like farmers, ranchers and loggers, live from harvesting natural resources. Small operators cannot compete overall, and may hire on with the “big boys.”

    The folks in your photo, Mart, camping on Wall Street protesting lay-offs and foreclosures and expensive credit in the growing global market have the same sense of shrinking opportunity and rising costs. Larger, richer “entities” are dominating. The sense of independence and control over personal circumstances is slipping away from the 99%. In the US, corporations have been granted the constitutional right of free speech in campaign contributions. Are large corporations persons? Perhaps they are semi-human…Are they then monstrosities?

    Striking crab fishermen and Wall Street protesters are seeking a voice and a chance in an arena of shrinking opportunity. It seems to me the gratitude of the first English immigrants to America came from living through disease and starvation to see a small but significant harvest time. The American Thanksgiving is complicated!

    Personally, I am rejoicing that the furnace repairman is working on the furnace – and that it will be operating before the temperature dips much further!

    I pray for those in genuine life-struggles this

    Thank you for your post this morning, Mart. I was still fishing in deep waters, so I thought it would be a good idea to read the Compact signed by 41 men aboard the Mayflower on November 11, 1620. Of particular interest to me was their devotion to undertaking their journey “In the name of God Amen… for the Glory of God and advancement of the Christian faith…”

    We have a great deal to be thankful for; most especially the freedom we enjoy in Christ Jesus. However, that freedom is always tested and tried by the prince of this world. He is everywhere.

    Today, the morning newspaper was filled with flyers of sales on Black Friday. Employees of many retailers have been cautioned not to express “Merry Christmas” for fear of losing their employment. Behind many of the lights decorating homes and businesses, there is little serenity of soul. Teachers and children are chided not to mention Jesus in the classroom or display a Bible. Displays of the Ten Commandments in public buildings are prohibited.

    Is it “In God We Trust” or in all that possesses us?

    Thanksgiving cannot be measured in terms of what glitters, life’s circumstances or statements of net worth. Thanksgiving is an expression of sincere gratitude for the greatest gift we can receive: Salvation.

    In Christ Jesus “there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female”… for we are all one in Him. We have the Lord’s abundance: His love, His grace, His mercy and His peace. He is our provider and our strength. In a nation and world of many gods, we have His Word and His Spirit to guide us, as well as opportunities to share His Gospel and His Gifts with one another.

    Thanksgiving is a joyous response to Good News: Immanuel.

    I can picture the 53 men, women and children on the Mayflower joyfully proclaiming David’s Song:

    “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods.” – Psalm 95:1-3

    These same thoughts and struggles were going though my mind last night.

    It’s important for us to be sensitive to the situations those around us are currently experiencing. If someone does not have a job, I do not feel it is fair to even speak of my own job. While it may be difficult and stressful, I feel it would be selfish to speak of these struggles to one who does not have a job.Sometimes I forget and then feel so guilty to speak of it. Or, to speak of small physical issues like allergies to those who have serious physical pain.

    Perhaps there is a time to publically give thanks and a time to be thankful more quietly. Sometimes Christians can be so insensitive and “plastic” with words. Sometimes Christians want to appear like everything is ‘just so’. . . give pat answers for those that struggle, and those well intended words unknowingly end up hurting the very ones who need comforting.

    Could everyone also pray for the family of those lost in a plane crash last night into the Superstition Mountains that claimed the lives of 3 children, the dad, the mechanic and the pilot. I can not even imagine what the mom and the families are going through.

    It is so very hard to rejoice in all things but I think that is meant that we trust God and who He is above all the things that happen in this life.

    Thank you Father that we can come to you in all our difficulties in this life and trust that you are there to walk us through them into eternity. Praise you and thank you for showing us such mercy and grace. Help us to show the same to others in your Glorious name we pray, Amen!

    Shouldn’t we be willing to give thanks openly, recognizing that what we have comes from God? I give thanks for our health, although I recognize that there are those that are not healthy, or whose loved ones are suffering from health problems.

    I give thanks for God’s provision in our lives, although I recognize that others are suffering from material need, and it is my responsibility to help relieve that burden.

    It seems to me that an unwillingness to publicly acknowledge that our blessing come from God can make it look as though we feel that we deserved our blessings or that we earned them. That is more of an offense to those that are suffering.

    Sincere thanks should show a heart that is humble before God.

    We need to pray for understanding for those protesting because they cannot find a job due to the greed of big business and financial organizations! I know people close to me who have lost their jobs either due to the downturn in the econommy or their jobs were exported to another country. The internet is full of people with absolutly no clue why or are full of hateful spite toward these people who are protesting! I know a few of them are not peaceful and I pray for them. On the whole though these people have shown great restraint even after being pepper sprayed or manhandled. We need to also pray that our government will see the real need of the jobless and homeless and make a concerned effort to turn things around in our country before these protests turn into what Gr. Britian,Greece,Italy,Syria, etc have seen with the killing of innocent people! Also pray for the insite for God to be returned into our schools, sporting events,government,etc. This is no time for our country to be setting God aside! In Christ Dan

    Claudia, I am so very happy your husband is able to be back home with you. I know too well the traffic around DC and it is also a blessing to have had to make as many trips as I am sure you did without incident.

    Yes hospitals are filled with broken hearted people and our own experience showed how eager people are to pray for one another as well as accept the prayers from strangers amid their own personal pain.

    Is thanksgiving just a day or is it a daily event?
    We are all stuck between the world of needs and wants.
    The great dichotomy of the mind and it’s persceptions, where most suffer themselves. Those who find their focus to be on achieving happiness, which is outwardly and only circumstantial, and those who have found their joy that does not rely on outward circumstance, but on the inner peace that only God provides.
    So, I thank God for the Joy found in His Word, in His Son, and in His Presence, as HE provides for my needs. We also have the outside world of wants, batteling inside us, and the object we tend to feed the most, becomes the more powerful objective.
    Thank God He provides for all our needs and not all our wants. Needs are fulfilleded by Him as He provides, but wants themselves, want forever without resolve. Joy is found in knowing you have your needs met in Him, regardless of the unsatisfied wants that are ever looking for their own form of happiness.
    Heaven is not filled with temporal things like in newly found wants, but it is totally filled with the things of Eternal Joy!
    Heaven to me, is where our reality of a need is constantly fulfilled by Our Creator, it is not a place where our wants are constantly remembered as un-meet. Praise God as He Provides for our needs instead of our wants. There is nothing more worthy of our giving of thanks, than to Him who Provides. Praising God is our act of worship, to him who Provides our needs.

    I hear the sentiments of Janet, bubbles, poohpity and some of the other comments which all point to the need for a universal community which brings us as close to the keyboard we each have by joining in a blog such as this. I am thankful for prayer and for the prayers of those who I have never met personally in this web-community of faithful. Our collective prayers are heard by God because He says so in His Word. I am very thankful for all those individuals in this blog community who have a heart for others in need and exercise their faith by praying both quietly and sharing openly in this forum made possible by Mart and all who contribute whenever they’re able to. God bless you all.

    The point was that we need to consider the needs of others when we are being thankful in public. God knows our hearts. He knows if we are thankful or not. But, I do not think it would be prudent to publically stand and give thanks for my health when one beside of me is suffering a major illness. I would not thank God for my house if a homeless person were in my presence. I would not thank God for the long walk I took in the presence of someone in a wheelchair. I believe the point was we need to be sensitive to the needs of others around us at times when we acknowledge what God has done for us.

    For me, I give thanks for my legs being hurt in front of people that walk well. I give thanks for my minimal income in front of people that have much. I give thanks for my fragile health in front of people who have good health. I give thanks for the troubles in my life while in the presence of those who may not have any. I guess it is because I do not see my troubles, trials, lack of money and bad health as being curses from God but blessings to be more dependent upon God for everything. I find that the things I struggle with are the areas that teach me more lessons and kept me closer to God. I actually feel bad for those that have money, good health, jobs and no problems because I wonder what it truly is they trust in.

    In his letter to the church in Philippi, Paul was exhorting the disciples to follow his lead and be content in every circumstances they find themselves in. “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want”. (Phil. 4:12) Then in 1 Thess. 5:18, he said, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. For most of us Christians, we don’t have much of a trouble getting along with this truth. But what about for the most of the unbelieving world, especially when material or physical blessings are withheld from them? This becomes something they have to contend with or utterly disagree with. Most of them will acknowledge that there is a God, but will not glorify Him in good and bad times. But what can we do? They chose to believe what they believe. As Deuteronomy 29:4 says: “Yet the Lord has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day”. All we can do is to pray for them that one day they will come to know and accept the truth that this is not the only world there is.

    Hi Bubbles, I can see your point. If this is brought down to a personal one-to-one situation, then it would certainly be inconsiderate to give thanks for blessings that the person next to you does not have – although it might not be obvious that they lack something like loving relationships.

    But then, I don’t give personal thanks in public. If I am standing in the front of the congregation and called upon to offer the prayer, which sometimes happens, then I would not hesitate to give thanks as a community for any of God’s blessings, even knowing that not everyone there is equally blessed at that moment. Otherwise, I would be limited to giving thanks to that which we all share: life and salvation.

    We could also always give thanks for God just being who He is, not for what He could do for us or give us but thanking God for being God. In admiration and thanksgiving that there is a God and how much He loves us. Even in that some could find fault. I guess some could find harm in anything if they look hard enough. :-)

    Mart, Enjoyed reading your intro comment. It was very interesting and thought-provoking. Was wondering if the fisherman’s feelings about the crap traps changed your perception of the picture, or were you still able to see them in the same way? Had a long day on Thanksgiving Day, so I’m little more tired than usual today.

    The other evening I watched in part a very different rendition of the story of the Exodus. It was on a Christian network and I only was able to see about half of the movie.

    Like many such movies the screen writer and the director used a great deal of dramatic license in delivering yet another movie about Moses and the Exodus.

    I guess what struck me the most about this rendition was a comment Moses made to God during a most difficult decision in Moses’ life.

    Speaking to God Moses says “Is this what you want, for me to give up everything to lose everything, to have nothing?”

    I keep a daily journal and in it I write out a thank you for every little victory we have during the daily struggle of life. When I come before God in prayer I always give thanks for the events of the previous day and for many other blessings I recognize in my life. Sometimes I am given to a volley of praise and thanksgiving that is just that, spontaneous praise and thanksgiving.

    Such moments are very private, sometimes shared only by the dark sky of the early morning whether star filled, raining or snowing or ablaze with the rising sun. Sometimes in my basement or in my garage, many times in simple quiet solitude, but always alone.

    Prayer time is a private time, and with a few exceptions meant to be done in secret between you and God. Not meant to be done in the presence of others, seen sometimes as only for their benefit.

    Congregational prayer is different than your private time with God, Opening or closing events with acknowledgment to God is also different than private prayer time.

    So for me, with little exception thanksgiving is given to God for every matter great and small every day all day long. In the midst of trials and tribulation and especially when things get tough. And like the movie version of Moses, when I wonder to God in my heart if that is what He wants, for me to give up everything, have nothing, to be broken hearted and grieved unto death.

    It is in those moments that I realize God wants blind faith and trust from me. Sometimes that being the most difficult of any action given from me, as it is an action of the heart and requires for me to “stand fast” in faith and “trust” God in all circumstances.

    Just being able to understand this is a reason enough to offer thanksgiving to God.

    Steve it is our god-given act of worship to praise him and pray to him. It is both solemn and joyful all at once. Its being totally alone, and never alone at the same time. It is where a Christian finds himself and His God are at one! It is our daily bread as we feed on it, our journaling as we digest it, our film of life ever running before us as we alone get to edit in God, and throw to the cutting room floor, all the extraneous junk that doesn’t belong in our most personal, One Act Show. It is how He blesses us and if we fail to share that with others, we fail to Act! Be Blessed,Gary

    It brings me back to the root and birth of this nation’s constitution as well
    We need to all give rememberance back to the One who created them. Many things in this world have been copied so many times, we forget the originals had a place in time which cannot be repeated. We lack the ground they stood on, the effort they gave, the life they suffered, and the moment of truth, they expressed
    to their Creator.
    God has given us our root, our place, and our time to give back to Him our thanks. Praise God he does not just copy us, with out us also knowing where we come from, without knowing that very same Creator. Gary

    I just feel so grateful for clean water to drink and not having to travel for miles to obtain it. I am thankful I can sit on my patio without guns and bombs going off all around or fear of that happening. I am so grateful that my walls have insulation rather being tin with no protection from the elements or a cardboard box. I am so very thankful I have a blanket and shoes.

    Father help me to be so grateful for all that I have and give me the wisdom to take all I have been blessed with to share with those who may not have food, shelter, clothing, clean water, family, safety and knowledge of you rather than in my warm, comfortable, safe environment. Please just help me to see all that I truly have and be content. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

    Mart,
    Interesting that this is the exact thing I’ve been thinking about recently.

    As a student of the word and a servant of my Lord, it puzzles me when I’m experiencing a difficult financial time acquaintances, friends and family that are believers are the first to point out that the reason I’m struggling is because I’ve lost my faith or have taken my eyes off the Lord.

    Ten years ago, my financial world came crashing down, I went into full time ministry, couldn’t raise a dime the Lord has taught me so much about finances and provision do’s and don’ts things that I should have been taught at home, school or even church.

    Recently I experience a TIA (mini stroke) just as my doctor released me to return to work, my employer sends me to their industrial doctor, and because he took to long my employer terminated me.

    I’m debt free, just have living expenses, I have a little savings, but for the most part I’m broke. Several doors began to open & I began to see a nice future when Wednesday the day before Thanksgiving I get so much financial bad news that it took my breath away. I almost felt like Job for a minute.

    Even though I know where my faith is, it brought me to my knees. I don’t believe in asking anyone for financial help, growing up on welfare, I developed a mindset that just because others have more than me, they are not responsible for me, even if it’s the government. I tried asking for help once and the response was the biggest embarrassment of my life.

    I’m at peace, and out of bondage, ground zero, but what do I do with it? No one employer or ministry will hire me simply on life experience. I know that God will make a way where there seems to be no way, so I wait, but during my wait, I feel as if I’m wasting time.

    I am thankful, even though it seems that those that tell me that I have lost my faith and taken my eyes off the Lord have so much more than me, I am content.

    Just pray that I will hear and see the direction that God is pointing me to before I go crazy Lol.

    Please know that I am praying for you, Janet and Rocky. May the Lord lift you both up and keep your eyes on Him. He is the One Who owns the cattle on a thousand hills.

    We have had some strains financially due to the economy and recent health issues. My husband just had emergency surgery for a perforated appendix, so here is another hospital bill that will come within the month after our insurance pays only what it pays. But, after having some tense moments, the Lord reminded me that He has never left us and that He never will leave us nor forsake us. That reminder gave me such peace, and I am so thankful to Him for quieting my heart once again in the midst of my inner turmoil. The Lord is so good!

    Although I have not been writing on this blog recently, I have been reading and praying as I read the different posts each day. Steve, you and Glenna and Matthew are in my prayers. Your writings are such a blessing to me.

    Bubbles, I am praying for your friend. May the Lord comfort your friend’s heart this day. Claudia, I’m so thankful that your husband is home. I, too, know the DC area, and am so thankful for the safety the Lord gave you as you traveled back and forth. I only had a 40 minute drive back and forth for my husband’s hospital stay, and although it was a busy area, it wasn’t anything like the DC area. May the Lord strengthen your husband each day.

    Very thankful for a beautiful sunny day (in the 60’s). This is not the norm for November in NEPA:-)

    I have been thinking about thanks and this topic. I keep finding myself singing or humming that simple praise song, “Give Thanks”.

    And now let the weak say, “I am strong”
    Let the poor say, “I am rich
    Because of what the Lord has done for us”

    It is not easy getting through difficult times, but I hope that I will always remember the blessings I have from the Lord, and not be ecvious of those that are more blessed.

    Rocky, you have been in my daily prayers for a long time, as have many here on this blog, even some that have not posted for a long time, but who might still be reading (annalies, cherrielynn, bob from cornwall, frank, peg).

    Hope all is well with you. Pooh, you and I are pretty much on the same page. Today I’m grateful for my relationship with the LORD, food, water, shelter, clothes, my job (please pray with me for a 2nd part-time job), friends & family.

    Steve, did it take you awhile to get used to daily writing in a journal? I tried to start journal writing on 11-19-11, but I have written in it since that day. I didn’t buy a really expensive one just in case that happened. SO far, the BTA blog has been my best journal writing experience.

    I was listening to a sermon this evening regarding what is the first thing we think of in the morning and then through out the day? What is the constant thing we think about all the time and whatever that may be is what has a hold of us and is taking all of our attention and time. Is it something that we can take into eternity? He asked if it was our spouse, child, job, finances, home and the list continued on and on. Whatever it is, that is what has a hold of us. What would happen if what ever it is was gone, what then?

    There is only one thing we take into eternity and above everything else that would be something we could be thankful for that has not been with held from anyone. If we think the trails, suffering, troubles and pain we go through are a measure of how God withholds blessings, we might rethink that. If we think that those who have money, jobs and good health are the ones blessed, we might rethink that. We have to remember that God has given strong faith most of the time to those who may not have much by worldly standards, strength to the weak, comfort to those who mourn and help to the humble. Our thanksgiving can be just because our eternity is fixed and written in the book that no one can erase. :-)

    Reading these posts has reminded me to be thankful for the things I have. I worry about weather I’ll be able to get promoted in time to continue my Military carrier, but I’m thankful that I have a job for two more years. I lament that my marriage may end soon, but I’m thankful that as mad at me as my wife is she still feeds me. I sarrow over my daughter’s Autistic Spectrum disorder, but I’m thankful that she is very beautiful, cute, funny, and charismatic. I struggle finanncialy, but thankful that I have a steady paycheck. I’m thankful for my struggles, because I know 1Peter 1:6-9.

    It’s difficult not to compare myself to others. I know that thinking things like, “If God is blessing that person more than me doesn’t that mean that He loves that person more than me?” Or “If God uses that person more than me doesn’t that mean He loves him more than me?” I know that at the end of the day it is only His opinion of me that matters, and instead of comparing myself to others I need to ask Him what He thinks of me. I have to remind myself constantly that my struggles are what He uses to make me more like him.

    I also want to live by James 2:15-17. I will pray for you, but I wish I could do more. Poohpity, Rocky you have my heartfelt prayers.

    I was going to say more, but it’s late, I’m tired and I forgot. Maybe I’ll remember tomarrow.

    I will keep you in prayer brother. I know what it is like to have financial(seems never ending) and health problems.
    Also know what it’s likw to have other believers tell you about the condition of your heart when only God knows what it is. Or that you have lost faith. Who are they to make statments such as these! Had the same type tell my wife she didn’t have children because she didn’t have enough faith.
    Listen only to good, Biblical counsel and advice; and hear the Lord in His Word.
    Meanwhile you will be on my heart brother.

    Thinking about all the trials we go through and remembering that they are all to prepare us for eternity, develop our faith and that all things God can use for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Rom 8:28

    I fully believe that God has called us together to share our burdens so that we can lift each other up in prayer and offer comfort for the brokenhearted as we have received comfort ourselves. 2 Cor 1:3-4 I also thought if our lives here were so wonderful who would want to leave to go some place better if we felt this was the best there is. This is not the best there is to me, looking forward to paradise where there is no more pain, suffering and hurt but until that time we can cling tighter to the Lord and each other. :-)

    Praise the God of all comfort with a thankful heart that the best is yet to come. Oh Yea!!!

    Tonight I have had a chance to really consider the above saying and thought when I had good health was I thankful everyday for it or did I grumble and complain? When I had a job was I thankful or did I grumble and complain about everybody and everything that had to do with my job?
    Was I thankful for the food I had or was it not what I was craving and started to be envious of what others had? My heart was so convicted to be thankful for whatever and most importantly for a relationship with our Lord, let’s be thankful everyday for that so we can carry it into tomorrow and on into eternity. Amen?

    Today’s ODB had a great message, “Just do what is right.” That flies pretty well unless you speak it to an unrighteous man, a worldly man, a pride filled man! Then it becomes closer to, “All a man’s ways seem right to him but lead to death.” To him, Just do it, or Just do the right thing, are the same. For his heart by nature, is not in the right place. Although I get the message, I get its well grounded intent, I really prefere this pattenly overused answer instead, WWJD?
    That plays to a more defined heart, than any common man’s thinking about what is right. Just a thought that plays the other side of giving thanks.     Thanks pooh, I always beleived we are to “be engaged” in the working out of our salvation, and those who remain engaged to the end, will be saved! There are verses that support this remaining to the end. But, some teach a doctrine where is not required.
    I feel they are misleading and confusing many.
    What verses say we should “not tell others” about their sin?
    I’ve always held to the thought that the sharing of the Ten Commandments, or even that verse about, All have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God, would be helpful for others.
    I have not seen verses that say to “not tell” others about their sin. But, I’m open to discussing your point, so please feel free to share those verses that support it.
    To me, “all the unsaved” are empty, lonely, guilty, and afraid of death! They all need to know this truth, and who else among us will tell them what they need to hear, if we can’t even mention their sin? Doesn’t that stifle the real truth of the matter of their need to be dealing with their guilt? Gary

If you would read the book of Galatians with special attention to chapter 3, it may help with your thoughts about keeping our salvation by following the law. Have we discussed this before? I sure do not want to start this again especially because we have given you verse upon verse to substantiate our beliefs on this. If I remember correctly we are still waiting on the verses from you.     Pooh… you are not wrong in leading me to any verses. Just do what’s right, like leading me to the verses, for they will speak to me without contention. They will however, correct wrong teaching, doctrine, and misleading of multitudes, if the Holy Spirit within them and without prejudice, will just do the right thing! But, once man’s mind is “set against” them, even the clearly written word of God, then where do we take those verses, but to those who will read them and weep?
    Like you say, I do have many to support my view as well, and you are still waiting! I too have been waiting to deliver what you have already read many times. But please remember this one thing…the entire world, have the entire word, available to them today, but they still do not believe what it says, for they all know they are doing the right thing for themselves!
    Here’s some verses for you to read “again,” but as you have said in the past, you have already read them for yourself over eighteen times.
    Perhaps today… Ezekiel’s warnings will be read again and without the prejudice of saying they are out of context, for all Chrisitian’s are to be warning others not to sin. That does not mean the wicked only but our brothers and sisters in Christ as well.
    You will see it as LAW again, but I choose to see these as God’s actual words to us, and what we choose to do with them, those actual words in the bible, that controls our eternal destiny.
    The first word is very powerful…
    Ezekiel 3:20-21 “Again, when a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before him, he will die. Since you did not warn him, he will die for his sin. The righteous things he did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you warn the righteous man not to sin and he does not sin, he will surely live because he took warning, and you will have saved yourself.”
    Ezekiel 18:24-26, and Ezekeil 33:13, they are a great read also, and in context to what I’ve tried to share!
    If we choose to believe all the notes and the aids found in a study bible, or application bible, and all the teachings of pastors today that may well be a false teaching, and an actual hinderance for Christianity when they express this eternal security, then that is what we choose for ourselves.
    Perhaps today… the actual words in the message of the Bible, will hit their intented mark, and bear their fruit! False teachings will always with their subtlety, lead us away from the actual words of God and create a doubting of their context. That is how they are designed, to satisfy the itching ears of modern man.
    But, those are just a few of the many verses I’ve chosen to share. Enjoy and Believe, as only Our God Provides! Gary

Well not really because once we realize the true state that each of us are in, we can become more thankful about the grace and mercy each of us has truly been shown then we understand what our salvation really is and it has nothing to do with anything we ourselves can do to earn it or keep it. It is a gift from God and believing in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. We do not deserve it, we can not earn it and as long as we continue to believe in Jesus we have can never lose it. The verse says in Phil’s continue to work out your OWN slavation in that we realize just how much grace and mercy we have been shown and how we can not look at others because we realize who we are at the foot of the cross.

    Yes pooh, Paul does tell us in Philippians 2:12, to work out our salvation. He is a most prolific teacher of Grace and works, unless we leave out many of his words,like in Colossians 3:16 where he talks of teaching and admonishing one another, or in verse 25 where he speaks about “anyone” doing wrong. In Colossians 3:5 he speaks about a work that we are to do, we are to,”Put to death, therefore, whatever longs to your earthly nature… I think he speaks of sin here, saying you “must rid yourself” of these things.
    but there are so many more words being wasted on those who support the doctrine that says, “No works are ever involved in your path to salvation, for no sin, no corrupt lifestyle, or not even believing a false doctrine can keep you out of Heaven, once you believe and were saved!
    Luke 15: 24-32 The parable of the Lost son must be either twisted or ignored, because “after he received his inheritance” he walked away. No one took him out of his father’s hand, he walked away by his wrong choices. But, when he turned from his wicked ways and returned to his father, who then said, “My son who was dead and is alive again.” This can only mean that he was spiritually dead and lost, by his own choices and wrong living. Did he still believe in his father? Yes, and it was enough for him to repent and be forgiven. This is a huge lesson on how wrong living, or believing can bring spiritual death into any beleiver’s life, even one who has already received his inheritance or salvation!
    Romans 8:13, James 1:14-16 must be ignored and of course James 5:19-20 according to Once Saved Always Saved teachers, this could never happen to one who was really saved. But, when Paul writes to his brothers in Christ, he is writing to those whom he knows were saved, but have wandered away.
    There are many more verses, but I choose to not overwhelm those who are saturated already in their always saved condition, and must do something else with these verses than what they actually say.
    Sorry it had to be me, pooh, but there are many others who are waiting to hear this truth also. Let them read with an open mind, a heart for the truth, and His Holy Spirit who will gladly guide them to find it…

    I read most of the comments today and find many interesting thoughts. The last few days I’ve been thinking alot about being thankful.
    What is the one thing all human beings can be thankful to our God for, above everything else. “We have all been forgiven”. “The cross” is for everyone to come to and be delivered from the bondage of sin. All 7 billion souls on earth today can repent and accept Jesus as Lord and savior today.
    I thank God that someday soon I will see Jesus face to face, “WOW” what a day that will be.
    Rocky: Ask the Lord for guidence in finding you the job where you can be a whitness for Jesus with your life, a job you will love. I had about 40 before I hit the mark. It’s not about the money, it’s the third of your life you spend at a job, you can love going to work everyday or hate every moment you are there. Do the best you can do at what ever job you are in, because you never know who may be watching you.

    I like to say: “I am the rightousness of God through Christ Jesus”. I am doing what is good and rightous not to gain favor with God but to #1 show God to the unbeliever, #2 stop all inroads to my mind by Satan, he attacts us with thoughts, ideas and suggestions. #3 I want to live the life my father in Heaven expects of me. Not out of fear of retaliation but because of what Jesus did on the cross for me and because I love him with all my heart. Our father is an awsome God. He gave us the Holy Spirit, the power of His Word and the name of Jesus to help us. Satan has been reduced to a shadow at the cross and I don’t fear shadows anymore.     In Ephesians Paul explains that our best efforts are what bring us to the Cross Eph 2:8-10. It is the Lord who works in us to change, we stay close to Him and He changes us. Most human beings like to take credit for their accomplishments but we as believers stay close to God and God does the work in us and through us. Phil 3:3; Gal 6:14. So if we are trying so hard to be good little Christians who gets the credit for that, the person. While all the time if we love God and stay close to Him over time it is only the Lord that changes us and puts the desire in our hearts to do things that please the Lord. Think about it, if it is the Holy Spirit living in us, it is that Spirit who works in us. All the trying to do the right things is our own effort and just think about how many things we do wrong as well.

    Here in the USA we offer the American dream whereas any person can come from poverty to riches by hard work and dedication. The problem is we currently have a government who wants to penalize such an effort by higher taxes based solely on, that the ones who have earned their way must now pay for those who won’t.

    We all know of “young mothers” who learn having babies is a pay check from welfare, and they very quickly attach themselves to either a church or some Christian older woman who thinks she can *save* this person. All too often just a ruse by someone to get something for nothing.

    They usually smoke, drink alcohol, have gentlemen friends whom they lie about living with, use drugs and for certain know where to get them.

    Now while you are generating another sarcastic response to me remember this. These are the kind of people who Jesus came to save from a life of destruction, these are the kind of people who need Christian love the most, but they also need to grow up and practice Christian ethics.

    Whereas I have now crossed over the line again, let me say this observation of things are just that an observation, not a judgement, I too have paid my share of others bills and went out on many limbs for people who not only did not appreciate it but expected it because I call myself *Christian*. I suppose I will continue to until the Lord tells me otherwise.

    Why should I indulge in any kind of sarcasm? Mrs. C and her family live two blocks down from us. She is glad to have one of her children in our Christmas Pageant. Sponsors are supplying the costume materials for the little girl.

    My sense is that more folks than last year are signing on at the free store for monthly groceries and clothing. We added about 14 families per month in 2011. We are not the only community with families in crisis. It seems to me those indulging in the American Dream needs to wake up. Sincerely, Maru

    yooperjack… 29-6:14 now there’s a handle that could use some definition, but I’ve got more to uncover here than the basis for that blog name.
    First, I would like to say, with the Faith I now possess, that “our works in Christ” are to bear fruit, good fruit. Yes, it will cut into the abandant life as you say, especially the abundant “sinful life” of the now disobedient who bear their bad fruit, by claiming they have their salvation, and yet, there is nothing they “must do” with it. “I did not say for it, I said with it!” Yes, Intial Salvation is the gift of God, but then comes needed Walk the bears fruit,and that is to be done by the Followers of Christ.
    It is a false teaching directly from the pit of hell to believe against the teaching of Christ, which clearly says, we must bear fruit in keeping with something. I wonder what that something is, that is not required by those who beleive in their chosen false teaching of once saved always saved, or eternal security, no matter what!
    For fruit to bear, it must remain in the branch, the branch must remain in the vine, and the vine in the root and the root in the ground, where it is fed and watered, or it all will die! (no pruning required)
    However, to believe this false teaching we must stand against, a fruitless branch, a diseased branch, a withered branch, that God’s Word says, “Will be cut off and thrown into the fire.” For the gardner in this case is God, Are we to believe He is not going doing his job, or the work that He is required to do to produce much fruit?
    My dear deceived friends, work was always essential in the garden of eden, and is also essential to remain on the road of life that “leads” to salvation. Righteous living according to the word, contains the very elements of this good fruit. Are we to believe that it is okay, just to wonder anywhere we choose, even disobediently choose to believe any thing we want, for we will never leave that narrowly cut and well defined way, even though that few others will ever find it, as we go about life doing it our same old way? Sorry but, any branch, even the grafted in one’s, as all Christians clearly are, “Will Be Cut Off, IF it does not produce good fruit!”
    Here we are, as Christians still arguing about which truth we choose believe, as many of us still trying to work out our salvation as Paul teaches, and stay afloat in the milk of simple truth, or our needed working to stay afloat. While others here are deceived to eat the meat of any forbidden fruit they choose, (because they also choose) to believe another gospel than the one Christ taught, and Paul spoke of. I wonder why the basics of “fruit bearing” does not work for them?
    Oh yeah, the Always Saved live above the Law, above it’s needed Obedience, which they now label as religion or legalism. Above perhaps, even Christ’s teaching, and certainly above Paul’s misguided working out message.
    How tragic it is that any sin of disobedience, or any believing in a false teaching works, because once it is given it’s reign on the heart of sinful man, he then feels safe in his taught by man unconditional security. Which according to its teacher’s, then trumps all things, including disobedience to God’s Word, with no work or fruit required?”
    I would give that stance of never falling away, never being cut off, the one that must be taken by this false teaching, some real serious re-evaluation… and do it,
    Perhaps today!
    If eternal security is ultimately where I have to take my thinking to join ranks with the rest of you here, then I choose to stay a Baby in Christ, working out my salvation, or doing my best if you will,to stay alfoat in the milk, rather than become as matured as you claim to be, by eating the tainted meat, of this popular modern man’s teaching! This was a hard post for me, because it is repulsive to many, but truth must be revealed in the Light it was given to share. Gary

    In Paul’s letter to the church in Corinth 1 Cor 5 he told the believers there that it was not their job to judge outsiders. Wasn’t it Jesus who said, “Give to those who ask, and do not turn away from those who want to borrow.”. Matt 5:42 I think it is because we if realize that all we have is from God and we are just the stewards. I have seen many addicts who have turned their lives around because of the kindness of believers and the opposite is true also there are those who have turned from Christ because of the judgmental spirit of believers as well. If everything we have is from the Lord it may be an angel we are entertaining by giving to them no matter what their behaviors may display. I could be wrong but I do not remember any place in the bible where it says if the person who asks for something is doing exactly what we think they should be doing, then give.

    I watched a church fail because of this very problem not giving to those in need from a fund that was filled by the people of the church for benevolence. The person running the program became the judge of those asking for help and turned many people away but would help those who looked good to them and fit into their little box. Not that discernment is not needed but like everything else there is a balance.

    Gary, you were right about that one area, that the reply was not meant for you. If it is by the Holy Spirits leading that you replied by convicting us believers of sin could you let us know what sin we have in our lives that YOU are convicting us of? Is it by confusion that the Holy Spirit works through you? If you missed the verses in 1 Cor 5:10,13 that was what was being referred to. Is it by half truths that the Holy Spirit works through you? I was always taught to compare what someone says is from the Holy Spirit to scriptures to see if what they are saying is from the Lord and I have not found that to be true. I have found half truths in some of what you say but not always, just pieces from here and there.

    I may be wrong but when there are problems in the church by someone who blatantly sins it is our job to help that person to see what is happening but we are also instructed that those who are spiritual to restore those folks GENTLY because those that help in that restoration keep in mind that it may be possible for them also to fall into sin as well. Never with the motives of feeling superior or in condemnation but with the heart of restoration and healing, not finger pointing.

    That seems to be the reason in the past topics we have said to be aware of our motives behind the things we do. Being aware of self, which you have said is being all about self rather than knowing yourself well enough to extend the large amount of grace and mercy we have been shown to others.

    Gary, the main cause that has been given in my life to do, is to get people to read the bible, because of so much false teachings. At times the words I write may not seem to point others in that direction but that is truly my motivation. There are things that we all may not understand in this life time and have disagreement with but the bottom line is, we have a guide book to read and it can not just be taken by verse to prove a point. It is a whole book and some have read more than others but the more one reads the more we all can realize we do not know it all and that was never meant to be or we would be God.

    I wish I had the ability to write what my heart feels but often I cause harm rather than good, so please do not listen to my words, read the bible and listen to the Lord. It is a life time journey of learning but no one will ever know unless they spend time in the words daily. Not just verses (milk) but the whole bible (meat). Do not settle for appetizers or dessert or someone else to spoon feed you take on the whole thing. So much to learn in so little time but the rewards are great. Not to show anyone else how much you know but how much none of us really knows.

    I’m glad you’ve read the entire bible, and many times. I have not been led to do that as you have. But, beleive me when I say, I am led to certain verses that do not need the entire word of God to make them valid!
    If that offends you, I am truly sorry, for the lack I have shown to your understanding.
    I think this is really the bottom line problem we all have in our mis-communication… it is not a lack of knowledge of the entire word of God, as much as it is in what part of the body do we need specific knowledge for thatt part we were chosen to serve. The one who is chosen to be a tooth, need not know all the duties, or knowledge needed of the eye. Nor is the eye in need of knowing all the duties of the foot. But, working together in one homogeneous body, with one spirit and mind controling it, we can work together without having each others particular knowledge and still have a common God-given purpose.
    It is our sin nature that causes most of this trouble or distraction we all seem to suffer with.
    We want others to hear or understand our particular calling, but they can’t, so they look for labels that work for them, like your accusing me of having a spirit of half truths. I do forgive you that one.
    Others can not always understand where we are coming from, why we tick the way we do, because that is not found in the knowledge needed to do our specific task. We just can’t know all things, nor are we required to. Gary

How do you know then what the Lord would have you do, or how to hear His voice if you do not know what we have been given to learn about Him? What if the voice you are listening to is not from God because it does not match what the Word teaches?

    You are so correct that we can not know all things because we are not God but we can know what he has given us to know and where else would we find that except in His Word. How do you know for sure that what you say is not half truths if you do not know the whole truth? Your own words convict you. I really care for you and I will pray that the Lord will put the desire in you to read His Word. :-(

    Desire and being led are two different sides of that issue. Where does a question like…”Is it by confusion that the Holy Spirit works in you?” What a terrible question to ask! Do you feel empowered by asking such things? Or, Have you ever read the bible? Which is also another one of your terrible questions you’ve asked several others here. To me, it is almost likened to, What planet do you live on? It really serves no purpose other than to bring extremes into play, as you seem to be pushing buttons. Does the spirit within you move you to such, and what spirit is it you are really serving when you ask such things? To me, they are either embarrassing or ignorant, but do not ring of any humility.
    I thank God these types of questions don’t play on this side of the street anymore, although you have throttled me in the past with bizare extremes, even to my taking two separate 40 day fasts from this site.
    How can I even begin to answer you when you are being unreasonable with your questions?
    Now, I’ll graciuosly give you the benifit of the doubt, as I’ll try read the rest of your post! If I feel provocation, I’ll again choose silence, above a continued battle. Gary

    Gary I wasn’t quoting you verbatim just responding to what you wrote. I would have put “” around the words if I had. Neither was I putting you down in anyway or shaming you, just replying to what you wrote. I was parroting back what I what heard you saying in paraphrase. I am not battling with you in anyway but I am trying to understand your point of reference when you say things like “God Word Rules only in the hearts of those who will Obey his well writtren words.” when you, by your own admission, have not read them. It seems to me it is like reading the introduction, a middle section then the ending just like taking things out of context, it is a whole and every book matters.

    As I said before if someone tells me they have something from the Lord I want to make sure and it has to agree with God’s Word. For my own well being if I believed everyone who said they had something from the Lord then I would be very gullible and if I remember right we are taught to test what others say to find out if it is truth or not.

    My point is this, If you are disobedient to the word of God than something else must be ruling over you not Him!
    For if your heart were really Ruled by Him, you would Obey His Commands! Its just simple.
    The disobedient among us, are ruled by their selfish choices that go against His Word.
    Can I say that in another other way that would be more meaningful to you?
    I know you’ve read this before,for Christ has said, you can not serve two masters. I believe it gets pretty understandable when we break it down to Just to the right thing, just be Obedient. It even rises above being required to be well read, as you seem to require of me!
    Biblical studies are not a prerequisite for our Salvation, or are they required to have a Living Realtionship with the Lord, or Serve the Lord.
    But, I think you “are required” to act accordingly to what you do know! You seem to hold me responsible for what I do not know. I find that as unreasonable, as you may find being held responsilbe for knowing the entire word of God! Be Blessed, Gary
