The Wonder of Life and Non-Life

How long will it be before newspapers of the world announce that a team of scientists has discovered the chemical formula of life?

Will they be beaten to the starting line by another group that discovers the mysterious subatomic factor that keeps even non-living matter from self-destructing?

As Iranian scientists try to replicate the technology of a downed drone, just imagine how many minds must be trying to reverse analyze something as basic as life itself.

But is there is a non-material presence, even in the life of a Christmas tree, that does not reduce to chemical interactions? Could there be a spirituality– even beyond life– at the subatomic heart of matter– that continues to mystify scientists who are presently chasing something called the Higgs Boson particle (media has dubbed it the God particle) thought by some to explain what gives mass to matter and holds it together?

Most importantly, could the One whose birth we are once again celebrating with lights and gifts be the One that the “wise men” of science are really looking for without realizing it?

As for the spirituality of life itself, the Gospel writer John begins his record of Jesus birth (John 1:14) by echoing the first words of Genesis (John 1:1-3), and by introducing his readers to the One who is the Source of all life (John 1:4).

When it comes to the mystery of even “non-living” matter, the Apostle Paul describes the same Son as the One who not only created all that exists, but continues to hold it all together (Col 1:16-17).

Could there be a wonder in the lights, gifts, and trees of Christmas that we have barely begun to see?

P.S. For reflective articles that remind us all year long of the One behind the wonder of creation, I hope you’re following the thoughts and amblings of Dean Ohlman.

    Good Morning Mart & Friends!

It is a privilege to wish all a joyous and blessed Christmas!

    Mart, you wrote:

“Could the One whose miraculous birth we are celebrating with lights and gifts be the One that the “wise men” of science are really looking for without realizing it?”

The writer of Hebrews proclaims: “…the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.” (Hebrews 11:3) We understand this by faith, not by scientific observation and experimentation. But, what if science is meeting faith in deep space? I recently saw in the news the report that the dark matter project has found black holes (star-mothers) as huge as 300 light years in diameter. Though I am not an astrophysicist, it seems to me that the Hobbs framework for space will have to account for these huge bodies that have ultra-mass and extreme gravity.

By faith, I must say that Christ, present at the creation, certainly holds together much more than organic and inorganic life. Everything is “through him and for him.” He is powerful to reconcile every particle in the cosmos to himself, where he dwells with the Father and the Holy Spirit. No words remaining for me — only awe and wonder at his powerful love!

    Blessings,
    Maru

The wonders of creation will never be fully known by man in the flesh; what accept by faith. But now we see as in a mirror darkly.
It’s interesting how according to natural law that positive forces will repel each other and yet at the nucleus of the atom we have protons sticking together.
“in Him all thing hold together”. WOW!
It baffles the human mind and at the same time I am baffled that in all their searchings the non-believing scientists have yet to concede that he is God. we can only pray. And speaking of which; please continue to pray for my mother-in-law.

When I meet new people or talk with people who are not acquainted with me I usually explain I have three intellectual passions, on top the list is my faith second is science and third history.

I then explain that all three are connected together in that without trying to, science continues to prove the existence of God and that history continues to prove man’s inability to govern himself.

The further into these subjects I go the more obvious it is that God created a perfect creation and that man is the misfit in it.

I remember a few decades ago scientists called the mystery that binds every thing together “the gluetron” now it is as Mart stated called “the God particle”.

I am reminded of a passage in Exodus whereby God explains to Moses that man can not look upon the face of God and live, so God showed Moses his “backside”…..I get a wise guy smirk here as I think God has quite a sense of humor as well as a delicate way of showing man what he thinks of his curiosity. (Exodus 33: 20-23). Of course Moses had to be hidden in the cleft of the rock in order to survive the encounter….Christ.

In Isaiah 45: 7 God clearly states He formed the light and created darkness. Only recently has top scientists accepted the concept that is not only dark matter in our universe but that there is more of it than of what we can *see*.

I see man still wanting to make God something they can see and understand, much less than He really is; how do you explain that what is tangible was created by someone above tangibility to people who can only understand what they can see or touch?

I see God still throwing questions at man just as He did Job and just to show such men what he thinks of their curiosity; he continues to show them His back as if wherever man goes looking God has already been there and they are only able to see his back…like the view from a loser in a race the winner is seen only from the backside.

Snow on the ground this morning.

Mart: Good to see a new topic the last one was getting boring. LOL

I believe God created everything I mean everything that will ever exist in 6 days, 6-24 hour periods. Man will learn as much as God allows when He allows it. We have been getting bits and pieces for the last 6000 years.

Have you noticed in the last few years there are not many new ideas but that we are building on old ideas? The stores are full of “New improved Models” I liked the old one better.

We may be coming to the end of this time period when all this struggling by man to know everything will end. There are so many natural events waiting in the wing that would change this world forever. Then it would be back to knowing how to survive not how God created everything. Many in this world are all ready there.

We will have snow for Chistmas but not much. Merry Christmas to all.

All this research into what they call the God partical, what holds us together. What are they going to do with it try to improve on it or deconstruct it.

When it comes to Atoms man has shown more of a destructive nature, look what happened when they split one.

  6. oneg2dblu says:

Merry Christmas to all those who remember Him, reveal Him, and can even say,”Come Jesus!”
The End of the Age surely won’t come before the greater minds of man discover all things, or will it?
Until then, Let us in our limited passions find Christ revealed, Christ remembered, and then say,”Come Jesus!”
No snow here in this part of Florida yet, but I trust Santa has a set of cool wheels to get him through. If not, maybe he’ll get them for Christmas!
Sorry,I don’t do sub-atomic, but I hear Subway has their scientists looking deep into finding that formula as we speak.
Let us not allow our reality to ruin His Day!
I hope I made someone smile. :) I hope it was Christ!
    Merry Christmas, Gary

Thank you Mart. It is a beautiful day. Sun is up, and the light increases. Spring is on the way!

Yes, there is a wonder in the lights, gifts and trees of Christmas. The greatest wonder and gift was bestowed to us on Good Friday, when on a tree of His own making the Son of God shed His blood for our sin.

Many of the world’s great scientists recognize Immanuel existed before the beginning of time; before the universe was created for His own good pleasure, honor and glory.

Dr. Francis Collins was Director of the Human Genome Project and is now Director of the National Institutes of Health.

    According to Dr. Collins:

‘As the director of the Human Genome Project, I have led a consortium of scientists to read out the 3.1 billion letters of the human genome, our own DNA instruction book. As a believer, I see DNA, the information molecule of all living things, as God’s language, and the elegance and complexity of our own bodies and the rest of nature as a reflection of God’s plan.

‘I did not always embrace these perspectives. As a graduate student in physical chemistry in the 1970s, I was an atheist, finding no reason to postulate the existence of any truths outside of mathematics, physics and chemistry. But then I went to medical school, and encountered life and death issues at the bedsides of my patients. Challenged by one of those patients, who asked “What do you believe, doctor?,” I began searching for answers.

‘I had to admit that the science I loved so much was powerless to answer questions such as “What is the meaning of life?” “Why am I here?” “Why does mathematics work, anyway?” “If the universe had a beginning, who created it?” “Why are the physical constants in the universe so finely tuned to allow the possibility of complex life forms?” “Why do humans have a moral sense?” “What happens after we die?”’

Yes, Dr. Collins embraces the God particle. His name is Jesus. He is the Alpha and Omega. He is the radiance of God’s glory. He holds everything together by the word of His power. – Hebrews 1:3

His wonder is seen everywhere, for life cannot exist apart from Him.

Dr. Collins is first to admit that “reason alone cannot prove the existence of God. Faith is reason plus revelation, and the revelation part requires one to think with the spirit as well as with the mind. You have to hear the music, not just read the notes on the page. Ultimately, a leap of faith is required.”

There was a physical science “professor” when I was in college. He began telling us the “force” that held subatomic particles together was called “gluon”–pronounced ‘glue on’.

Days later in another lecture he asked us the name of the “force” that held subatomic particles together. I said, “God”. He became angry. He claimed he did not believe God existed. I spoke with him several times about God. He was elderly and hateful. It appeared he hated God. I had an extremely difficult time in his class.

Back in the day, when I went to school, it was predetermined that boys generally did well in the science and math classes while the girls in the grammar, spelling and secretarial courses. I am proud to say that I didn’t rock that boat and enjoyed the grammar, spelling and secretarial classes. After grade 9, as they were compulsory that first year, I quickly dropped science and math. So it is, that every time I see the words proton and atom, I think they’re spelled wrong and should be crouton and Adam. :-)

As I am not able to dig too deeply into this topic, I am very content just knowing that Jesus Christ is The reason for this season and without Him in my life, I am hopelessly lost.

May His love, peace and joy warm your hearts and homes. Merry Christmas! from Ottawa, Ontario.

Personally, I don’t believe man can ever find a way to prolong his life on earth eternally, on his own, that’s ridiculous. Science is a false messiah. The Bible says “men are destined to die once, and after that, to face judgment” (Heb. 9:27). Understandably, most scientists do not believe what the Bible says. They always take God out of the picture in every quest they make to find something new under the sun. But God surely put into action every physical law discoverable by science, including the growth and decay of this carnal life. Ironically, while one group of scientists busy themselves looking for the formula to everlasting life, another group has already gone the distance in coming up with something that will annihilate all life on earth. Weapons of mass destructions may already been developed clandestinely by paranoid nations and are being perfected every single day. Nuclear, biological, chemical, you name it. History showed that whatever man invented he put into use, it’s just a matter of time. If the time comes to unleash the fury of these inventions then the whole world will be facing death, not life. Too late for man to come up with a “serum” that will make the heart beat forever. As always, only God can save us alive, as Mark 13:20 points out “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom He has chosen, He has shortened them”. Obviously then, God doesn’t want His creation to suffer this horrifying fate. He wants everyone to have life in peace and harmony. That’s why He handed out to us the User Manual of Life. That life would mean this life and beyond. He may not presented to us the exact equation of the formula of ‘life everlasting’ like the scientists would, but He plainly told us how to obtain it as outlined in His User Manual, not in any scientist’s classified specs.

No matter how close men think they get, they will never quantify or “create” a facsimile of God. With all of the issues, needs and problems in the world – good use would be to use all this brain power to improve the lot of more people. Besides, this sound “Babelish” to me. Also, incredibly arrogant and foolish. Thank goodness, God is sovereign and forgiving to our foolish ways but there probably will be consequences.

  16. poohpity says:

I often wonder as God gave Moses the book of Genesis, to record creation, if he even wondered about the minute details or was so awe struck by just talking to God. If there had been a scientist who saw the Shekinah Glory shining forth from his face would he/she have tried to reason it away or try and explain the unexplainable.

We as human beings over the centuries have caused more damage by trying to fix things, change nature, restore what we have taken apart and created living beings by man-made means that they say God is science fiction when everything that God has touched has changed into something beautiful. Science may be able to fix a malfunctioning heart but only God knows what started it’s first beat and how to mend it when broken from the callousness of one human being to another.

We only see what is in plain sight but what about those things we can not see like how a brain processes it’s environment, thoughts, feelings into behaviors. Or how the body functions automatically with out verbal command from us like walk, breathe, and every other action our bodies do naturally. The things that are not seen are more wonderful than anything we can imagine but what we have been able to see is also so amazing.

There is so much wonder all around us I do not think in this life time we will ever be able to experience only but a small part and what we do with each moment will show how much we really appreciate it.

    Merry Christmas to all.
