When a 90 mph, category 1 hurricane Sandy made her landfall last night at Atlantic City New Jersey, the breaking news seemed a bit anti-climactic for awhile. Predictions of a Superstorm with a catastrophic storm surge began to seem like one more false alarm.
By 9:00 EST time, however, the language of the news groups started to change. A full moon high-tide was being pushed higher by a hurricane that was quickly morphing into a giant Nor’easter; saltwater was rushing into the subways and other tunnel systems of Lower Manhattan; the skyline was flashing with power transformers exploding; 2 million were already without electricity, and over the next hour it became apparent that the threat of flooding was not less than predicted– but far worse.
At this point the sun has not come up, so no one yet knows the extent of the damage, or what Sandy will do today. Am concerned about Steve and family in WV, and how many other friends are among the 5 million who have already lost power or worse.
Overtime, media hype may have turned many of us into skeptics. But last night appears to have been far more of a wake-up call than we were looking for. Sometimes, predictions and warnings come to pass.
Will wait to hear from our friends who share the concern, and/or are waking up to the effects of a storm who, as we now know, was no lady.
