Sandy’s no Lady

When a 90 mph, category 1 hurricane Sandy made her landfall last night at Atlantic City New Jersey, the breaking news seemed a bit anti-climactic for awhile. Predictions of a Superstorm with a catastrophic storm surge began to seem like one more false alarm.

By 9:00 EST time, however, the language of the news groups started to change. A full moon high-tide was being pushed higher by a hurricane that was quickly morphing into a giant Nor’easter; saltwater was rushing into the subways and other tunnel systems of Lower Manhattan; the skyline was flashing with power transformers exploding; 2 million were already without electricity, and over the next hour it became apparent that the threat of flooding was not less than predicted– but far worse.

At this point the sun has not come up, so no one yet knows the extent of the damage, or what Sandy will do today. Am concerned about Steve and family in WV, and how many other friends are among the 5 million who have already lost power or worse.

Overtime, media hype may have turned many of us into skeptics. But last night appears to have been far more of a wake-up call than we were looking for. Sometimes, predictions and warnings come to pass.

Will wait to hear from our friends who share the concern, and/or are waking up to the effects of a storm who, as we now know, was no lady.

    Good morning, Mart.

    The wind has blown all night, and woke to find a foot of snow on the back deck. The window screens are full of snow.

    Cars will not be able to pass on the street until the plow comes, or they would bottom out in the street.

    This time last week was 78 degrees. Looks like Sandy slammed the door on autumn. Guess the sandals have been retired until spring. Hehe

    Am thankful for a roof overhead, warm house, and coffee running through the coffee maker.

    Prayers for those who are struggling this morning and the time ahead that they may focus, trust and grow in the Lord. May this be their foundation, may their hearts be set right so what they must endure may be shored by the pressence of our almighty God.

    Thank God that we did not get the damage up here that we could have. Some very high winds and not as much rain as predicted. Power was out two different times for a total of nine hours and we were prepared. Have a brother and his entire family in north NJ and also a cousin and her family. My wife has family in the NY metro area and Long Island. Still praying for all.
    Tears welled up in my eyes when I saw pictures of NJ on TV. I was born and raised there and moved here when I was 21. Many of those places were familiar to me.

    I often wonder after these tragic events just how many people will begin to think differently about their lives and about God. Will this be a life changing event for some?

    I just talked to Steve in WV and they are ok, but already sound tired to me.

    He is the mayor, so everyone has been calling him. Power out in the whole town since last night; and lots of that slushy snow since yesterday.

    They are on generator power and probably won’t run computer for awhile.

    He asked for prayers for all and sends prayer to all.

    I didn’t get much sleep last night, as I live in a mobile home and with the winds gusting up to 60+ mph, it was rather noisy. This morning, when I awoke, my first thought was, “Thank you, Lord!!”. Not only was I thankful, but I was full of awe. Sandy was just a sample of God’s power. I feel like Bruce, will people begin to think more about God, or will they blame Him? It wasn’t that many years ago, that I would have been scared to death to ride out a storm like that, in a mobile home, but since I put my complete faith and TRUST in Jesus, I don’t have the fears that I use to have. I praise Him for that every day.I just don’t know what I would do without Jesus. I am 72 years old, have some physical handicaps and live alone, with just my little dog.(she was so nervous last night). Yes, prayers go out to all who got the storm worse than I did. I, also, pray for those who do not know Jesus and know the comfort of His love and peace.

    BrueC… how many will look at their lives today and come to know God? Great question!
    Do you remember how full the Houses of God were, right after the first 9-11,the first real awakening of many? What happened?
    They like Solomon, fell back in love with their other gods, their other loves, those gods in the world of wrong choices, and they are still lost, drifting, and many without hope, for they have turned away, fallen back, and remain unchanged living in their old lives.
    For some of them, it would have been better if they had not known, or put their hand to the plow, and then looked back.
    We do not know the fate of Solomon anymore than we know the fate of those who we no longer see in our churches.
    But, we do have the word of God telling us it is not His desire, His plan, or His best, warning us, if after we have tasted the promises, we then turn away, and if we do not repent? It is Written!
    We do pray for the lost, that is His plan, we do pray for those who have turned away, that is His plan, but it is for the lost, or the backslidden alone, to Repent, If not, how His Justice and His Love play out, that we can not know in the here and now, until it plays out with us!
    What we do know is this, those who obey His commands, those who hang on, hold firmly, run the race to the end, keep the faith, and trust in the Lord, they will receive their promised place in the Kingdom of God.
    But, for all the rest, we must allow the Hand of God
    to do to them, what He in His justice will do.
    His word declares that there is an eternity that awaits all, and there will be a day of accounting at His White Throne, and that is God’s plan and choice.
    He decides who goes where for eternity.
    We can pray for right choices to be made today, for today is the day of our salvation, for those who will repent, those who will obey, those who will follow, hang on, run the race, keep the faith, Trust in God!

    To all of you who took the time to respond to this post I thank you. I have a lot of family in Sandy’s path, but we did not receive anything but a little rain.The thought of snow in Virginia and the Carolinas is hard to contemplate. I live in central New York an area usually pounded with snow. If any of you have seen the weather maps our area is in the least affected area in New York.
    God of all, thank You for sparing our area of New York least affected. Please help those in the path of hurricane Sandy. For those who have lost family, friends,and home to the power of this storm. While writting out this blog, Father, I heard in the background, a news report informing us that no 50 homes have been devasstated by fire, I pray there were no people in those buildings.
    God has spared all of us and our gratitude goes out to Him, and at the same time there is a heavyness in our hearts for those who died and especially their friends and families.
    I could not agree with all of you anymore than I do coincerning the hope that God will bring some unbelievers into His flock. Thank God for those who are praying.

    His Sparrow thank you for sharing about Steve. When I went to bed the snow was at 27 inches in some areas of WV. bubbles glad you are safe in your area of WV too.

    So very glad for the rest of our friends in other areas who have been able to share that they are safe, Bruce, laurie and pjeanne.

    Was sad to hear of those who did not heed the warnings and are in harms way. Praising God for all the emergency response teams and those who have provided humanitarian help. It is so wonderful to see all those who are stepping up to the plate to help their neighbors and praying when we can not physically be there to help.

    Just measured the snow on the deck: 23 inches. At 6:00 a.m., this same spot measured 12 inches. The wind has been blowing; must have drifted. It was hard to open the door for the snow.

    I’ve been watching tv reports Bubbles, on the snow in WV. Travelled there, on the I81, to Martinsville last Apr to attend the Nascar race. I saw then the landscape with tree leaves just budding. It is in stark contrast to this morning where the landscape is now covered in deep snow. I hear you may be in for much more before it’s over. It will be heavy throwing to shovel so please be careful!

    To everyone who has posted, who have been relatively spared, I am thanking God with you. My area had wind warnings posted last night and when I woke up, we were untouched as well. I was just outside a few mins ago and although not near as bad, the winds are gusty but the sun is shining.

    My thoughts and prayers are with the rest of the BTA family who have not yet been able to post as well as to everyone who has been affected by this storm. May God keep them safe.

    Two p.m Sparrow time,
    5 p.m. Steve’s time in WV…

    Just chatted for a minute, still got the generator going; headed out for fuel in a while…they are sitting in chairs, snugged up in blankets and taking calls.

    Blessing for all of y’all.

    Temp in the Mojave desert about 90 during the mid day and getting closer to freezing at night…the same every season; would be nice if I could bottle the warm and send it on.

    Samaritans Purse and Operation Blessing are all primed up and ready to go in to help as soon as they get the OK to proceed. They are taking volunteers for this very large job the more hands the quicker the clean up and the more people served.

    Claudia… great post. We clean up what we can, and God cleans up the rest.
    Many more hard days coming, some must be weathered today, and many others tomorrow.

    It makes us wonder what we would do without knowing what we know now…
    Who do others pray to?
    Where do they fix their eyes?
    Where is their hope?
    Jesus is our answer and theirs too, but how will they know it, unless they hear.
    We get to tell them, Praise God!
    Prayers to all, that our needs for weathering storms are met by Him!

    I talked briefly, they are well, lots of calls between neighbors.
    Still no electricity; lotsa snowplowing and blankets and riding it out.
    Still got generator.

    I am persisting with prayer God will continue in His goodness.

    Would all of you here please pray for my uncle?

    Just received word that he has 3 feet of snow on his roof. He’s been on the roof shoveling snow off. Two buildings in his little town have had their rooves collapse due to the weight.
    He’s not a believer, and his back has been bothering him, in addition, he’s not in the best physical shape.
    They do not have electricity or water as of this writing.
    Thank you for your prayers.

    Thank you for all the updates, in this way I can feel more attached to a disaster far away from my home, which is in Europe. Wasn’t last year Irene, about the same time, and nothing happened in New York, this time it did.
    I pray for you all, and for the people in the Caribbean who have also suffered from the storm.

    Dear Brothers and Sisters,

    I have been praying for you all but haven’t been able to be online because we had been without cable/internet since Monday night. We had very strong winds and rain Monday night-so strong that our old house was swaying. I fell asleep as the bed swayed knowing that the Lord was in control (Psalm 4:8).

    We were without electricity for 18 ours which was not so bad because we have a generator. Others are still out. The electric Co. said over 180,000 people still do not have electric in this part of PA.

    I ache for Steve and others who are still waiting for their service to be restored. Also, generators are expensive to run if you have to run them a long time. We went through about 5 gallons of gas in about 11 hours and in this area, there were and still are some stations not pumping gas because they don’t have electric. It’s better today, but not so in NJ and NY.

    Tonight our internet/cable service came back on, and we were able to watch the news. My sister and her husband stay with a friend at Breezy Point, LI throughout the summers. So many homes were burned and destroyed. This beautiful little seaside community has been torn apart. I have walked that beach and have had lunch at the club/restrauant that I heard was washed out to sea. In just a short time life as it had been for so many was drastically changed. Oh, that the Lord of all comfort would draw near to all who have been affected by this storm. May His children know his comfort and His peace as they work through all of this. May those who do not know Him, see their need to turn to Him in repentance and faith.

    Thank you, Sparrow and bubbles for keeping us informed about Steve and his family. I have been praying that the Lord would give him the strength to do all that he has to do. Praying for you all.

    May the Lord bless and keep you, and make His face shine upon you all.

    The catastrophic effects of the storm are far worse than we could have imagined. Most of us are watching from a distance. Yet so many–just like us– are trapped in conditions that are alarming and deteriorating in i.e. Staten Island, Hoboken, Queens, vast shore communities and beyond…

    …as far as Steve, Glenna and Matthew.

    So many are still waiting for help in weather that is turning cold… without electricity or heat.

    Responders can’t move quickly enough. Gas lines are turning ugly. A densely populated metropolitan area that depends on mass transport is now looking at subway systems some of which will take months to get back into service.

    In anticipation of the storm we said that the irony of community crises is that in the worst of times neighbors find one another. But what we’re seeing are conditions so extreme that neighbors are left helpless to do much for one another.

    I think that this is the hardest part just watching and unable to do anything physically to help. God can and so we offer up prayers and to me sometimes it does not seem like enough but it really is. So many people need your help Father down in the Caribbean and on the East Coast of America for that matter all over the world. Please Help.

    Haven’t posted for a long time, but have been reading the blogs and was thinking of Steve and all when Sandy came through.

    I echo what Mart stated about watching from a distance. Here in Florida on Sunday before the storm hit up north the waves were like I’d seen in Hawaii on my visit there years ago.

    Been praying for the Christians near enough to help that God would give them wisdom and the resources to help their neighbors. Glad for partnerships through various churches and pray for a “help chain” that the Lord will raise up to accomplish amazing things to His Glory and to the help of the suffering ones in all the places affected.

    Hello dear friends, thank you all for your prayers and concern for my family and I.

    We just this past hour got power restored to 2/3 of town and about the same time had internet service restored.

    There are still people here with out electricity, cable, etc. but crews are working hard to restore as they can.

    I just stopped in to say hello, we are ok, and my generator is getting a well deserves rest. I will try and catch all up with everything in the morning as time allows.

    Again thank you all so very much for your love and concern, also thanks to Bubbles, Sparrow and Pooh for calling to check on us and for keeping you all posted.

    Steve and Della, good to hear everything is ok.

    Many people are having difficulty now, and it will continue for a while. Some poor people will lose their jobs because they will not be able to use public transport to get to them. It is a sad situation needing our prayers.

    Another of the interesting observations about this storm is though we seem to live in information overload, once all communications is removed; information isolation is what you have.

    Looking here in my own situation I can see, in spite of cataclysmic circumstances, there are many evidences of the Hand of God watching over us.

    Monday night I heard a loud crash outside; when I looked my telephone line had pulled off the house. Much to the displeasure of Glenna I climbed out on the roof in that storm and reattached it.

    Right away people started calling about power lines going down and we were able to start getting our volunteer firemen out early to protect lives.

    Along about midnight the town went dark. I got my generator going for us as it is necessary for us to have heat.

    By 5 in the morning things started getting more serious as trees, big trees started breaking in half and wherever they fell they were going to take out what ever was in their path.

    Several years ago we had a project of removing as many trees along our streets as were possible, of course there were some people who did not want trees on their property removed, even though we offered that choice.

    I have timber down all around the back of my house but they all fell clear of hitting anything.

    I did have to cut tree tops clear from in behind my truck in order to get it out and start plowing, but the trees missed my truck and only fell in behind it,

    I called the people I had in place to begin clearing streets and roadways, but one fellow, it took him 8 hours to reach town a distance of maybe 1 mile, as the road he lived on the state had yet to clear it, so he did.

    I will send Mart pictures once I can get some time.

    Am still rather busy and also very thankful as now that I have a reestablished a view of the rest of the country; we are in great shape compared to so many others. It is so sad to see any one suffer.

    Steve, so good to hear from you – busy though you are. You wrote:

    Thanks for this portrait of someone who shoulders the burden for self, and others as himself. I do not know how many live on the road he cleared, but his gift of labor shines at a time like this on the Eastern Seaboard. He seems to have the means and the will to give.

    Not all folks are “citified” in the USA. Those in the urban grid who are still without basics might be better served to depart the area to places where civil society is uninterrupted until all is restored. My understanding from the news is that people do not want to leave their homes for fear of theft and destruction, yet there is little means of keeping warm and fed there. Plus, the garbage is piling up. Having lived on California’s North Coast, I still keep emergency supplies in a tub: tent, lanterns, propane cook stove, and so on. When trees go down and the water rises, we must take care of one another the best we can.

    Prayers going up for little ones and the frail and elderly. Evacuation to safety is the only solution for those who depend entirely upon those around them.

    Glad to hear that you and yours are okay Steve.

    We were blessed up here as the strom didnot make landfall as far north as originally they it would. We lost power two different times for about four hours each. We had our ‘stuff’ ready and we heat with wood so no problems there.
    Fun to read the Word and history books by lantern. Reminds me of my camping days as a teen.
    My brother is still without power in north NJ and prayers would be appreciated.
    Delaware County to the south of us still has folks with out power too and that county goes much further south closer to the higher winds.
    My wife’s sister lives on Long Island and the phones were back up so my wife called her and all is okay. May the Lord be praised and may His glory shine through this time.

    What I find truly interesting in times like this is the reaction of people to what has taken place.
    They interviewed some people on TV and they were polar opposites. One had lost his house and cars in that huge fire in Queens and was very grateful that he, his family, and all his neighbors were alive. Another person in New Jersey complained about not having her cell phone up and running or being able to watch TV.
    My friend told me about a women being interviewed carrying a bundle of food that the military brought in and was complaining that they did not get a hot meal.
    I find human nature to be very astounding at times; and at others very sad.
    I thank God for all that I have by His grace.

    Sometimes peoples responses to circumstances can seem very harsh or perplexing but that could be responses from fear when tragedy strikes. I also know how the media works by taking snippets out of context to make their stories and making judgements by mere appearances.

    I do know that we all can mess up and things can come out of our mouths that we wish we had never said and things we feel in our hearts we wish we could take away but I know one thing for sure that is Jesus came to save not to judge. (John 12:47 NIV) If that is how He is I pray that we can all be the same.

    My heart aches to see so many thousands lining up for public transportation, fuel and food in New York. So far, according to reports on the ground in the city, folks are staying calm and trying to cooperate with authorities even in terrible hardships. It is early to decide the meaning of a thousand-mile-wide storm wreaking havoc on one of the most densely populated portions of the USA.

    Students of earth’s environment tell us that super-storms are an artifact of overall global warming. Hurricane Sandy surely is an instance of the “roaring of the sea and the waves.” (Luke 21:25) It seems to me each of us, along with the Christian fellowships where we belong, must decide how urgent it is to share the love of Christ at every opportunity.

    Bob, try and look at Jesus instead, remember you wrote yourself that we, just like the Israelites in the desert had to look up to the snake on the pole and be made whole, so we have to do that now.
    Just to try and remind you of the positive influence we should be (but I agree with your point)
    Today the Marathon in New York is cancelled, a lot of our country men had left already on tuesday, and are there now. Some are complaining they had made all the effort and money to come there, but I rejoiced today when I heard the news that there are some who came to help out with the cleaning up after the storm. That is good news!
    We should be like that, christians who are not complaining how bad society has become, but instead are building up, and helping where we can.
    Keep up the good faith, I remember Corry ten Boom who was in the concentration camp, and said, Jesus walked with me: How deep the situation is, Jesus goes deeper with you. And I pray this will be so for you all.

    Bob, I know you are hurting right now and it may cause you to lash out at others but I know your heart. If you feel I am an arrogant American Christian because I suggested that you turn to God rather than asking Mart to stop your comments that is OK. I know that I am anything but arrogant or self righteous, my thoughts about myself are not that important or what anyone else thinks of me because I am dearly loved by our Savior and know exactly how much I fall short in many areas. Thank you for reminding me again how much I am hated and badly thought of. It hurts really bad if that is what you are trying to do, it worked but I love and care for all of you anyway.

    That was really a lie because I do care what others think about me probably more than I should. I always have and this continued assault on me as a person has just about pushed me over the edge. I did not mind if someone disagrees with the things I say but this continued beating me down as a person has been more than I can bear.

    I don’t have a bible quote to paraphrase. In fact I am a new be to Trinity. I have been attending for several months with my client.I really enjoy coming. But today I found myself really disappointed. I was disappointed because there was no mention of hurricane Sandy or even a prayer said for all those who have lost so much. No donations collected or offered for Sandy survivors.I know there are places like the Red Cross for that kinda thing, I just thought Trinity would make it more personal. I grew up in New Jersey and still have 2 sisters and a brother there.Thanks for listening.

    Yes, you are correct. Sometimes we get so caught up in our own thoughts, desires, fears, defenses, and will, that we forget what is important.

    My prayers still go out to the many people that are yet suffering the effects of this storm, from the Carribean to Canada. For some the scars will last a long time. I pray that many will come to know that in the face of such hardship, there is only One in whom we can place our trust.

    My heart breaks for thoes along the coast who have lost everything as winter approaches.

    We all know the big picture, and we all stumble on the little things of life at times that may look to others as petty, selfish, prideful, uncaring and the lot, as our humanity surfaces and our discussions project such through our limited means of expression, by seeing our words only.
    Verses don’t always win the day either, when words let out under perceived pressure have been exposed and can not be taken back, but they can be forgiven, and damage done like in the storm has lingering effects, and affects us all. When one hurts we all hurt, as we are a family and children of God. Gary

    It seemed to me that stormy posted on the wrong blog, I may be wrong but they seemed to be thinking they were on “trinity”???

    We have helicopters coming once or twice a day flying over us, for what I can only guess. they never land just hover over several locations and move on.

    One thing about sending money to the Red Cross etc is that, that helps them pay for emergency needs where addressed, but it does not help people rebuild.

    We have managed here without their help.

    Have gotten good news. My brother and his family, my wife’s sister and family, and my cousin and her family are all ok and have power now. Praise be to God!
    Still praying for others that are hurting so badly.
    Samaritan’s Purse is gearing up or they have already begun to help. I will pray that many come to Christ through their help and testimony of the Gospel.

    I too am thinking of Narrow, KingdomKid, Cherielyn and all the rest who haven’t yet stopped in. I am trusting God that they are safe and warm.

    Mart, I, like Foreverblessed, received that same error message. I was thinking I was to blame. On that note, I am sorry. Thank you for putting up with what you do. Sometimes I don’t know how you do it… I’d have put a lock on the gate and given up long ago I’m sure.

    Hello BTA family. Just want to thank you for all of your prayers. I was downed, not by the storm — which was not bad at all in my town in MD, but by the flu. Spent several days out of pocket, in bed. Have lots of family in NYC who seem to be making it despite the massive disruption. So glad we serve a mighty God who can and will bring joy out of ashes. I’m keeping you all in prayer, in the precious name of Jesus.
