The Threat of Terrorism

DSCN5300An 8/5/2013 alert on a Homeland Security website says, “There are growing concerns that an al Qaeda affiliate could use a new generation of liquid explosive, currently undetectable, in a potential attack, according to two senior U.S. government officials briefed on the terror threat that has prompted the closing of nearly two dozen U.S. embassies.

Though the Transportation Security Administration has long been concerned about liquid explosives being used in potential devices — as it was during the failed Christmas Day bombing in 2009 — the new tactic allows terrorists to dip ordinary clothing into the liquid to make the clothes themselves into explosives once dry.

“It’s ingenious,” one of the officials said.”

A warning like this reminds me of what may be the most insidious threat of terrorism. It fosters fear that in turn that can cause our love to grow cold (Matt 24:12).

Yet… who can deny that the kind of faith that responds to the promise of Jesus’ “Come to me” shows up more brightly in the unsettling darkness of “an evil day” than in the false security of no apparent danger? (Matt 11:28-30).

  1. SFDBWV says:

God laid out the foundations of the type of society He wanted for His people to live in, Jesus added to it by emphasizing compassion and love as the central part of such society.

Until the prescribed time of Jesus’ return and His earthly rule we all must live in some society with each other.

Christian based nations have made laws and enforced them in order to come as close to living that standard God provided in the Bible as one can, including the rule of mercy where applicable.

However in order for that or any society to exist rules and laws must be adhered to, enforced and violators punished.

Only God is able to remove evil from the world. In the mean time it is up to us as a society to protect ourselves from the evils of this world. When we don’t, evil grows stronger and its ally fear along with it.

We are not living in the garden any longer, but God didn’t abandon us, He has enabled us and empowered us and at some point we must do some things for ourselves.

There was a point when God no longer sent manna and a point where Jesus left the multitude because they would follow Him just because He could continue to feed them. There is a point in our lives where God expects us to *do* something to squash evil and turn fear into triumph.

When we come to God we come for guidance as well as provision. Don’t cower in fear of evil, rather stand up to it with all the authority God has given us and stamp out evil where ever it rears its ugly head, just like the snake it is, and crush its head under foot.

It is an evil day we live in and the gathering darkness is indeed insidious. (I wonder if this darkness compares in anyway to the stealthy tactics that Hitler used to gain power.) Of course, with new technology, etc. the “mad men” of today are capable of even more violence and destruction.

The verse that come to mind is, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee”, Psalm 56:3. Maybe I am naïve, but I expect to be safe in God’s care. And, if physical harm/death comes at the hand of terrorists, I will still be safe.

It is selfish of me to think of my own safety first. However, I must deal with my personal fear before I can offer hope to others. The news is so full of all the things that are wrong in the world that we forget that there are also many godly people who are heroically pushing back against the darkness.

A great battle is brewing to set the stage for Christ’s return to conquer all evil. Come Quickly LORD JESUS!

I believe we are supposed to pray for our leaders as well as our enemies. Although I believe our leaders ARE also our enemies…I pray for ALL of our enemies as “known and unknown” and don’t name them. I TRY (but often fail or forget) to see the frightening and/or infuriating madmen/women of the world and all those consumed by greed and thirst for power and position, as lost souls that are in desperate need of prayer.

Often, I will read the horrific news and be shocked…then I wonder why I am so shocked when I’ve read countless times in scripture that this is how it will be, so I pray for the people I have read about. Then, the next day, I am shocked all over again. If we ALL prayed for our enemies daily, could we slow down this insanity?

  5. SFDBWV says:

Sheryl I certainly agree with you that we *expect* God to take care of us and I do ask for His protection for my family every morning, believing His mercies are fresh every day.

However what we see as protection and the desires of our heart may be different. So in asking to be kept safe I also ask for the desires of my heart believing Him when He said, “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” (Psalms 37:4)

I am somewhat a mature Christian, and can take disappointment a little better than less mature Christians. So what then do immature Christians think and feel when disaster strikes or they do not receive the answers to prayers they ask?

They think God doesn’t care, they think God is cruel and mean and merciless in spite of what the Bible says and what other Christians say.

Some may say their faith is tested and when they react in such fashion they fail the test and so have to start over. Others may say they just haven’t faith enough yet while still others believe it is God who gives faith. So if they have no or a little faith who then is at fault?

The fault may just be those of us who think we can talk for God or lay out the idea that if we just ask, God loves us so much He will do as we ask.

I think it very important to be careful of what we say as it can be very destructive as well as very encouraging as we have no real control of either.

All any of us can do is trust our fate to God and receive it either happily or sadly and be content with that.

Didn’t see that the topic has moved up, and still posted in the old one.
You have a point Pearl (Narrow), what if we all prayed for our enemies? All together!!
Isn’t this the commandment Jesus gave us, to do good to those who hurt us, to bless those who curse us?
That is the rule of the Kingdom. I often think, the Kingdom is not here yet because we (christians) do not live by its rules, we mingle the ways of what is normal in the world to that of the christian life.
In the war on terror, there has changed something in our western world, our states have free access to all we do on the internet, phones, payways. And this all because of the war on terror. Big brother is watching us, has become real.
But lets keep on praying for all, as 1 Tim 2:1 writes,
not only pray, but to make a petition, do intercession, and thanksgiving for all (inclusive our enemies) what a great deal of things is said in that verse! If we would act on that, all of us, would that not make a difference?

  7. poohpity says:

I know the world teaches us to protect ourselves but the Lord teaches us to trust Him, to be meek and humble and to show mercy. That is a far cry from taking up arms in fear and retaliation. To show love and mercy to those who are so undeserving that is what Christ showed us far be it for me to do anything different. God is the only righteous Judge and the enemy is complacency to think as the world does. It takes more strength and courage to live against hatred and animosity then to show it.

  8. phpatato says:

Pearl, Am I selfish in saying…Do I really want to slow down this insanity? If I had THE choice of prolonging the insanity or speeding the end result up, I would be guilty of pulling the plug to let all the dirty tub water go down the drain. There is only so much that clorox can do before even it breaks down. Perhaps my outlook though is because I am so tired. I visited Mom and Dad’s place of rest a few days ago and the words inscribed on the bottom of their stone struck my heart so much that I actually got homesick….With Christ which is far better.

Bubbles, I find peace in Psalm 91. I think that is a wonderful- personal – passage. I say personal because I am at a point now where I feel that both of our countries (United States and Canada) are about to receive a wake up call. Our nation’s leaders have, in the past 50 years or so, shunned God and He in turn will shield His eyes from us. Will we ever turn around to become Godly nations once again? No. The wheels of destruction have started to turn. This world WILL line up to the prophecies in the Bible and the United States and Canada will have to fall into line in order for a one-world government to rise up. As Steve said, all we can do is trust God for our fate and be watchful and ready. This war on terrorism is not being won. Our intelligence system is simply (at this point in time) maintaining. There will come a time, soon I believe, when there will be continued losses.

I’m going for a coffee. I am sounding too negative and down. I am tired. Sorry.

  9. swwagner says:

    Random thoughts:

Praying for our enemies and leaders is something that I neglect regularly, so I will be making a conscious effort to do that.

Spiritual safety is all that matters to me. If terrorists bring upheaval and destruction, we will suffer mental and physical anguish but those who are born-again will still be “safe”. Safety in the arms of God is based on His promises to me…certainly not because I deserve it. I hope to be safe physically so as not to endure pain (or watch others suffer) but “this life is but a vapor that vanishes” so I know that pain is really just for the moment if it does come.

We are to be “wise as serpents but harmless as doves”. To me, that means we are to go about doing good…pushing aside the darkness to bring others to Christ…all the while watching for and being aware of the presence of the enemy.

I too am tired. My body is wearing out and I am no longer able to do what I once did…but what JOY! The more we “lose” the more we turn to God until, “the things of earth grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace”. (I don’t recall who penned those words or who arranged them into a beautiful hymn).

At my old job we traded turns giving a devotional each week during a morning meeting. It was my turn shortly after Sept. 11. All of the emotions and thoughts were swirling about, and Psalm 37 brought me great peace.

Sheryl From what I googled this is what I found:

    Turn your Eyes Upon Jesus

    Words & Music: Helen H. Lemmel, 1922 .

This hymn was first published in Glad Songs, by the British National Sunday School Union. Its lyrics were inspired by the Gospel tract Focused, by Lilias Trotter, which included these words:

O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s a light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!

    Refrain

    Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

    Through death into life everlasting
    He passed, and we follow Him there;
Over us sin no more hath dominion—
For more than conquerors we are!

    Refrain

    His Word shall not fail you—He promised;
Believe Him, and all will be well:
Then go to a world that is dying,
    His perfect salvation to tell!

    Refrain

    Thank you for this.

Good day all… spent my whole morning in the dentists chair to the tune of $5200. Their still smiling and I only have a half smile until the meds wear off.
Just like the decay that lingered out of sight under some bridgework done thirty years ago, evil hides out of sight but always working on those who fail to notice it.
When good people do nothing, evil has its way among us.
Like Steve or Forever said, but put in my own words, “We in the power of the Holy Spirit within us, must stand against it.”
Or, as Christ said, you will serve one or the other.
Terrorism is an evil that at times lingers hidden and unseen by many today who may deny its evergrowing design, but let’s be honest, it is a force against us who now find freedom in the absence of its present grasp on us.
We should collectively pray as directed, “If my people who are called by my name…
THEN,I will hear from heaven and heal their land.”
I too like many others have not collectively prayed as we should.
Can this type of obedience come about in our lifetime?
Is the Holy Spirit within us already praying for us?
    I need a nap. :(

I too, often fall prey to fatigue, and it is more often than not, that discouragement is right on its tail. That is the worst place of all for my head to be. It is also most prevalent when: 1) I am slacking off on my prayer time, and 2) not leaving enough time for study at some point in my day. The Lord has given me so many wonderful things and put so many inspiring people in my life that I find when I am lacking in thankfulness that I am also running low on joy.
Recently I have been putting together a study on Jesus’ experience with the ten lepers in Luke 17:11-19. There are days when I am like the ungrateful 9, and there are days when life gives me the opportunity to act like the 1-returning to God in grateful prayer for ALL of life’s ups and downs.
I do feel grief when anyone, for any reason is murdered or taken hostage. In truth though aren’t these murderers really doing their master’s bidding. These people we’re talking about have Satan as their master, and like any good slave they do everything they are told. As Christians we are fortunate enough to have received God’s mercy and grace, and through the blood of His Son, have become redeemed from Satan’s power over our lives.
I do agree that what we must do is pray for these terrorists, and that just as we are instructed in Matthew 28:19-20 we need to be taking Jesus out into the world and sharing Him, and teaching Him at every opportunity. Even with terrorists.

  14. remarutho says:

    Good Afternoon All –

As I listen to news of terrorism everywhere, I pray for the distrust that has taken root in the hearts of humanity to be choked out by the Tree of Life . One reason Jesus admired Nathanael was that he prayed and saw a vision of God’s glory in our midst. Jesus said, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” (John 1:47) Even though Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den for something he did not do, he returned and told King Darius, “O king, live forever! My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths so that they would not hurt me…” (Daniel 6:21)

I am never confident that I could be a Nathanael or a Daniel. But, trust in God can bring us through dark days. It is not clear how God accomplishes the deliverance of his people – but he does it. God also supplies courage when our knees are knocking together from fear. Trusting God is perhaps the hardest task before us. It seems to me we must also pray to remain open-hearted even though we are in great danger of being betrayed. Our first work is to overcome hatred – our own and that of others. Meekness requires greater trust and courage that armed combat.

    Blessings,
    Maru

  16. narrowpathseeker says:

Billystan, I am always moved by your honesty. I have come to believe that recognizing our blunders is the work of the Holy Spirit. Once we are Aware, Remorseful, and confess it, pray about it, and ask for Help to do better…I believe that is like taking out the garbage. I think being genuinely remorseful may be very important…it is quite easy for me to forgive anything when there is true remorse. I need a LOT of God’s help when there is no remorse. Lately, I think He has been showing me that even remorse is from Him and those who have none desperately NEED our prayers. I haven’t quite conquered the “repay evil with good” realm yet, but I am gaining ground…with His Help of course.

Maru, I wholeheartedly agree with you about overcoming hatred…our own and that of others. It is certainly not easy to love those that hate us. If we all reap what we sow…then hate begets hate and it is not so easy to love someone that hates you…especially when they act it out in word and deed. The importance of praying CONTINUOUSLY becomes more and more evident daily.

Pat, I have tried to email you several times for about 3 weeks…but I keep getting a “failure” notice. I don’t know if your mailbox is full or what is wrong.. Can you check it out… I don’t think you are selfish at all!! I think we all may feel that way at times…at least I do. I will be praying for you. I hope we can get in touch soon.

Forever, Cheryl, Gary, I don’t ALWAYS pray for our enemies and leaders…I will read something and go off fuming sometimes for hours before I am Reminded to pray for them and think of them as lost souls…and remember that making an effort to bring them to Christ is our mission. However, I AM gaining ground…I used to fume for weeks….sometimes months!

  17. poohpity says:

Mart, that Matthew verse is so true Matt 24:12 NIV. When we get so preoccupied with the wickedness, evil, hatred and anger it starts to fill us so that love grows cold. I think that is why Paul suggested that we fill our minds with those things listed in Phil 4:8 NIV.

If there was never a news flash about terrorism we may develop a false sense of security but if we trust what God has always told us that evil has always filled the earth, it may come in different shapes and forms, but even our own hearts do not hide that fact. So do we let that wickedness fill us so that our love runs cold or because we make a choice to be meek and humble in Spirit because we trust that God in His good time will stop all this madness. Allowing ourselves to be yoked with Christ the burdens of this world do not seem so heavy.

As I read about our countries closing embassies, I felt afraid there would be war again. Now, as I read about this new type of bomb, I feel afraid. But I go to God with my fears and He gives me peace. I am encouraged by all the comments, and especially about praying for our enemies. I also read Psalm 37, as recommended, and it is very helpful.

I thought about Psalm 11:3 which says, “When the foundations of law and order have collapsed, what can the righteous do?” The next verse says, “But the Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord still rules from heaven.” No matter what the future holds – God is there for us.

  20. SFDBWV says:

When the people demanded a king to lead them instead of God through His prophet Samuel, God gave them what they wanted.

The people felt more secure and even though God warned them what having an earthly king over them meant, they didn’t care.

Look to the future even to today and as we continue to be threatened by outside and domestic terror, we the people ask for security of our leaders (kings).

We continue to give up freedoms in the name of security and ultimately as crime and injustice continue to grow the people will be ready to accept a leader who will give them what they want.

Not so strange, God will not only allow it, but has told us of this coming world leader who is called the “Anti-Christ” or the “beast”.

What should we as Christians be doing or telling others? We may reject such a leader by voting or not voting or may not even have a say in the matter, but should we be about warning the world of his coming?

Who paid attention to the warnings of the coming flood of Noah? Who listened to Samuel when the people rejected the rule of God for a king? Who will listen to us today and does it matter?

Terror of this nature on a global scale is a sign of the times and as a sign of the times we point out what the signs lead towards and offer an escape from the coming terror on an Ark of a different nature.

Our Ark and the Ark we point to is in the safety of Jesus of Nazareth the Christ.

Only in Him are we able to be overcomers of what lay ahead.

We have all seen the image of a man walking along the street with a signboard that states “The end is near”. No one pays any attention to him and thinks him some kind of nut.

The signboard we should have hanging on us is that there is safety in Jesus Christ alone and that Jesus of Nazareth is the way the truth and the life.

Others may still think you a nut, but instead of warning of the coming gloom and doom and terror of the world, the message is that there is hope and where it is found.

God is going to give the world what it wants, make sure you know what it is you want.

    Steve

  21. BruceC says:

All that we see going on in this fallen world has beenn spoken of in the Word. And the focal point of it is Israel/Jerusalem. Satan and his minions have deceived billions and blinded them to the Truth and intends to destroy Israel and the Church. But we already know the outcome. Help us Lord to show your peace to others in Jesus Christ.
Fear and the desire for security drives many to do things and accept things that other wise they might reject. Even our founders warned us of this.
Litle by little the “kingdom of evil” has been at work in cultures throughout the world; deceiving those who have been blinded. Only the Gospel can pull back the scales so that a person may “see”.
As times get worse; and they will, let us be the bearers of the Gospel and tell others of true peace. Peace with God; who will at some time pour out His wrath upon the world.

  22. poohpity says:

After living in fear after 9/11/01 from reporting my neighbors to the FBI and having them come over to interview my daughter who felt her loyalty to her friend was more important than the loyalty to our country, everyday was filled with anxiety. That was during the time I had laid aside my bible reading for 4 years so I was floundering around like a fish out of water. So to get His word to me He used a sermon which the topic was fear and the verse was John 16:33 NIV. When we allow someone or something to dictate how we are going to feel other than the Lord we become oppressed.

I agree Bruce when you said, “Fear and the desire for security drives many to do things and accept things that other wise they might reject.” Not being satisfied with the hand we are dealt many tend to go everywhere else but to the Lord or listen to teaching that is often times so airy fairy the truth gets lost but that desire to have things go the way we think they should be going or fearing what we can not change is a driving force to accept things that if we are in our right mind and grounded in our faith would reject.

Fear and insecurity can be replaced with peace and security if we only would trust. That sounds so easy yet is often times so hard for those of us who have had to be the leaders in our families, to let go of control, to give it over to the One who carries all thing in His hands.

When treats of any kind come against us or we begin our day it seems is a good time to place our spiritual armor on and lift the only defensive weapon we have, God’s Word.

  24. foreverblessed says:

When Pooh brought up Corrie ten Boom a few weeks ago, I started looking for her writings, and found a letter she had written in 1974. This was in response to a meeting she had with a pastor in China, where the great persecution had started at the end of the 70s. Many were killed because they professed to be christian. The pastor was very very worried, maybe even down, because he said, they had not instructed the christians to be prepared for tribulation, they had preached that christians would be taken up, that Christ would come before tribulation started. He now saw how wrong they were.
It was one of Corrie’s concerns that christians be prepared to stand up in persecution.
And I am very very much comforted in what I read in all the comments:
“I have told you these things, that in Me you might have peace
In the world you will have trouble, but take heart I have overcome the world.”
    John 16:33
This is such a great spiritual message,
we are shielded in the spiritual sense of the word, our spirit and soul is secure, what they can do with our bodies and possessions will do no harm to our inner being, if we remain steadfast and faithfully true to Jesus.

The ones who have learned to die to the old self and to the world, are the ones who are prepared for tribulation, they have already died, so no more death in this world can harm them.
The life they live is a new life in Jesus Christ
Come to me… Matt 11:28-30 is best learned now while it is still day.
I pray this is true for all of us, and I start with myself, God help us to be prepared.

  25. poohpity says:

forever, when you wrote, “The ones who have learned to die to the old self and to the world, are the ones who are prepared for tribulation, they have already died, so no more death in this world can harm them.” that brought the warmest smile to my face and an Amen!! to my heart. The grumbling, complaining, and asking the whys fall to the way side not saying there are not times we get the breathe knocked out of us and have moments of downcast hearts but we see the Lord’s hand quicker as our faith matures and grows as we trust and rely on Him and not ourselves. We know that there will always be terrorism and threats even when we are not aware of them, they are there and always will be until we see Jesus face to face.

  26. cbrown says:

Thank you for the above post! I got the wind knocked out of me an hour ago and you helped me put things back in perspective.

  27. foreverblessed says:

Well, the dying to self is easier when the focus of my mind is on the new life, it is much more the reaching out to the newness of life we already have in Jesus:
What do I make real in my vision: the new life or the old I see all around me?
To be honost, my mind would be full of the negative things going around, as there is in the physical world all around us much to see that is wrong, and going the wrong way. I would look at the trees, and nature and see all the pollution, and I would cry. (that in itself is not wrong) but what was wrong that it would make me depressed, and that is not what God wanted, He wanted me to have peace.
In me you will have peace John
There is no other way then looking up to Him, and even that is a skill to be grasped, The first time I really got the command, Look to me (instead of to the person who was doing me wrong) I tried to do that, but my mind would go back to the wrong that was done. It was a flipping over of looking at Jesus, which I did not really know what to look for for very long, and going back to the evil that I saw with my eyes. That was 10 years ago, and to be honost at this moment I realise how it is done:
    Start blessing!
Bless the Lord o my soul
All my inmost being, praise His holy name Psalm 103:1
I am very thankful to God, who was so gracious as to work with me all these years, He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and especially, the God of Jacob to me, as He worked years and years with Jacob to get him yielded to Him and His ways, so He is with me.

This way blessing is a new way of life!
-It starts with God, not just positive thinking, it is God who promises us so much, and when I start blessing Him for that, these things become real in the spirit of my mind, and makes my mind new.

-The blessing is then for myself too, how much blessing to I tell myself? I would see the things that are wrong, and name them one by one, but that doesn’t make me any better. Blessed am I in Jesus name, and I bless my body, not naming all the ills that are there, (which I have named long enough) but start blessing the different parts that are not functioning well, They need it.

-Start blessing others, as from earlier on, I would only bless those that deserve it, those that are a blessing to me, now I see it is especially for those who need it: the ones who are enemies, they are the ones who need the be blessed by God, touched at heart by His love. We are like priests:
    Num 6:22-27
The ones we bless, God puts His name on them, Num 6:27 isn’t that a great message:
The person that is a pain for me, is the one I bless, that person comes on a list of God, and God starts working with them. Isn’t He a wonderful God?

  28. Mart De Haan says:

Thanks, foreverblessed. Will try to pick up on your thoughts about the wonder of our God in a new post in a bit

  29. royalpalm says:

Thanks for the above thoughts… made me also think these things: Scriptures tell us that there is a spiritual battle going on and the turmoil that we see is the physical manifestation of the struggle in the heavenly realms.

Jesus has warned His followers of the future when wickedness and lawlessness will cause our love for Him to grow cold- but those who prevail until the end will be saved. Matt. 24:12, 13. This is a sober warning for us to remain steadfast in the Lord even as dangers like terror threat increase and persecutions against Christians around the world escalate. Matt. 24:9
The above verses were followed by lessons on watchfulness v. 32-35, and faithfulness v. 45-51. Jesus wanted us to be aware of what is happening around us and to remain faithful in serving Him, with the assurance that He is coming again v. 30-31.

In view of the above we need to examine ourselves and how we use our time, resources, and abilities as we live our life each day. We need to know God’s word for it is God’s power to save and to be faithful in prayer so we do not get carried away by the snare of riches, and the cares of this world. Constant communication with God will enable us to hear Him and align our will and desire to His and He can work with, in, and through us.

I regularly receive letters from a missionary in a country where great persecution against Christians occur. Some Christians recant their faith yet the number of believers is increasing. This pastor starts his day very early with reading of God’s word and prayers . Like our Master we should also do the same. Luke 6:12, Luke 18:1

Luke 21:36 “ Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

  30. AmazedbyHis grace says:

I live near a city that is a terrorist target. My prayers that the Lord will thwart the plans of evil men have continued. Foreign terrorists have promised a big event. I can easily see how they could accomplish this and I think they have been practicing.
I have a knack for seeing things out of place and have turned in seen events to Homeland Security. No response there! I saw two more similar events and still no response from them. I didn’t tell them where so I could know that they were concerned enough to write and ask where.
Obviously, evil is all around us. We must trust in the Lord, but has sin darkened your path? As I review posts, I can see that some are not “holy” in the Lord. I encourage you to repent in full and turn away from the sin that is entangling you. Replace this with His word and strength.
