Blood Moon

The interest in the recent lunar eclipse has stirred up thoughts about what an amazing gift the moon is to us.

While the sun is far greater, a lunar eclipse shows that the moon has an apparent size in the sky equal to the sun.

A fascinating online article in Universe Today explains this in the following quote:

“In absolute terms, the Sun and the Moon couldn’t be more different in size. The Sun measures 1.4 million km across, while the Moon is a mere 3,474 km across. In other words, the Sun is roughly 400 times larger than the Moon. But the Sun also happens to be 400 times further away than the Moon, and this has created an amazing coincidence.

From our perspective, the Sun and the Moon look almost exactly the same size. This is why we can have solar eclipses, where the Moon passes in front of the Sun, just barely obscuring it from our view.”

Amazing isn’t it. Not only these facts about the way the sun and moon work together to make life possible, but that so many of our neighbors are convinced that it is a lot easier to believe that the life sustaining contributions of the sun and moon are a coincidence— than to believe the account of Genesis that says,

On the fourth day of creation, “God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day.” Genesis 1:16–19 (NLT)

You’ve probably heard as I have that, together, these two great lights have a way of pointing beyond themselves to the difference between the God described here  and everything else that can only reflect him– more or less.

Any other interesting thoughts on what an amazing gift the moon is to our survival?

Early last evening we went outside and failed to capture the beauty of the rising moon as it began its ride across the night sky with our camera. A picture just can’t quite capture the beauty of seeing it first hand or basking in its presence.

Certainly life on earth as we know it owns a great deal to the tidal action the moon has on everything on earth especially the oceans.

In fact without realizing it every bit of the universe around us aids in making not only possible life on this planet possible, but this planet possible. Everything effects everything in a balance we can only begin to understand.

This is existence in the physical existence we observe with our senses.

However we are also told of a spiritual existence beyond our natural senses and that the actions of one influence the other and so we see only a reflection or effect that the spiritual has on the physical.

Much as the moon only is seen as it is because of the sun reflecting’s its light or presence off of it.

A friend gave us a copy of the book “Four Blood Moons” by John Hagee recently, I haven’t as yet read it, but already know the premise from reading others similar in showing the world as the return of Jesus looms on the horizon.

Funny when I look at the big full moon I always thing of Perry Como singing “and the moon in the sky like a big pizza pie, that’s amore’.”

    Good Morning BTA Friends —

It seems to me we humans over the generations have acknowledged the pull of the moon upon all the bodies of fluid on earth — including our own circulatory systems. Hence, persons and animals are sometimes comically called “looney,” because of atypical or erratic behavior.

The Prophet Joel describes the outpouring of the Spirit of God upon all — and along with much prophesying will be manifestations in the sun and moon. The sun will be darkened and the moon will be the color of blood. These descriptions of the heavenly bodies could easily be of eclipses, or the atmosphere filled with smoke and ash. (Joel 2:30-31)

Discovered this morning of the passing of a friend yesterday. If it can be said of anyone this was a good man who produced a good family, lived a good life of hard work, exhibiting strong family values and certainly an example of what a Christian man should look like.

He and his wife were both workers in and officers of their local church and were privately generous and compassionate to all who they seen as needing help.

His legacy is already seen in the four sons and daughter he and his wife had and raised and in their grandchildren’s attitudes and contributions to the area and people who know them.

Except for this notice from me none of you will hear of his passing; timber man, farmer, coal miner, husband, father, grandfather and friend.

The world showcases the passing of its celebrities, but their light will not outshine this man’s.

Just sharing a bit of our life for you, so you may feel somehow a part of it with us. As I don’t grieve his passing as much as feeling blessed to have known him and see him still with us in the children he leaves behind.

Lots of thoughts about the topic this morning. The sun I believe is pure energy while the moon is inert mass. I could be wrong, but this reminds me of how Moses Exodus 34:29 was a mediator/moon between God and man and also how Jesus in his transfiguration Matt. 17:2 also reflected the sun.

The scriptures say that we who have had the veil removed 2 cor. 3:18 also reflect the glory of the Lord, but still approachable, as was the moon when men walked on it, and Christ while in the flesh and even after his death and resurrection.

Little wonder that John fell on his face as if dead Rev. 1:9-18 when he saw Him in the spirit. As would we if the full force of the sun were to shine upon us without the rotation of the earth giving way to seasons, and times of relief from the hot sun. Jesus is our relief from the hot sun of God’s wrath and the way into the light of God’s glory which burns up everything in it’s path making everything new.

New creations, new heavens, new earth. New like the seasons governed by the sun and the moon.

Today I thank Him for this new day and for healing and forgiveness for past sins and mistakes.

    Blessings, Joyce

One scientist says, “The Moon keeps the Earth from wobbling violently as it spins.” The gravitational pull of the moon keeps us tilted in just the right direction and is like a brake that slows our rotation.

Everything God has created seems to be for a reason and a purpose. With all the things that work together in harmony to give us a life full of wonder and amazement. I can imagine how our minds would be so wasted if we did not have things to promote our curiosity.

    The Man Child
“And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.” (Revelation 12:5)

This remarkable scene was part of a great vision given to the apostle John as the Lord was revealing to him “the things which shall be hereafter” (Revelation 1:19). He had seen an amazing “sign” in heaven-a woman “clothed with the sun . . . travailing in birth,” with “a great red dragon” awaiting the delivery and ready “to devour her child as soon as it was born” (Revelation 12:1-4).

Although the whole vision is richly symbolic, the figure of the man child clearly refers to Jesus Christ, because it is He alone who must eventually rule all nations “with a rod of iron” (Revelation 19:15). Thus, the symbolic “woman” must suggest His human mother, Mary, but also Eve, the “mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20), for in His human birth, the Son of God became also “the Son of man” (Acts 7:56; Revelation 1:13). The vision, in fact, dramatizes the long warfare between the great dragon (i.e., Satan-Revelation 12:9) and the seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15).

In the vision, the “man child” will have been “caught up” (i.e., “raptured”) to heaven, and the dragon and his angels “cast out” to earth (Revelation 12:5-9). But when Christ returns from heaven, all believers, living and dead, will also be “caught up” to meet Him in the air, and thus may well be included in the man child of the great “sign.”

There has been continuous warfare between the seed of the Serpent and the spiritual seed of the woman. The Dragon is forever “wroth with the woman” and with “the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 12:17). But Christ will finally prevail and cast Satan into the eternal lake of fire (Revelation 20:10). HMM

I copied this from a daily devotional I get and thought it connected to our subject in an abstract way, enjoy.

Thank you Steve for your post. Yesterday was a learning day for me. The day after a glorious celebration for friend that has gone to be with the Lord. I had a root canal and the medication in preparation for the root canal and my flesh caused me to slip into a selfish state.Seeing myself as I had been before I surrendered to Christ caused a deep depression to grip me. Yesterday, after lunch, I had my devotional time and read the blog and comments to ODB. This morning I have had my devotional and as I look to Jesus Christ my Lord I can say as someone said before me, “He does all things good all the time.” Praise God!

  11. joycemb says:

Chris I know what you are talking about. Yesterday I was remembering how when I am around a certain person I tend to slip back into my flesh-it comes so naturally it seems, but makes me very ashamed afterward. This person triggers thoughts and attitudes I had before I knew Christ. What to do? I decided to thank God for all He has done for me and in Me, and leave the rest to Him. It was a good lesson for me on how we can never become smug in our faith, but must rely on Christ every minute of every day. Hopefully God will give me the grace to overcome this trigger. After all, it’s His battle, not mine if I surrender to him every day. And a good reminder of the need for humility every minute of every day. The scripture He gave me to meditate on was Ephesians 3:20. Praise God!

  12. joycemb says:

OOps typo there. not ‘in Me’ but ‘in me’.

Chris hope you are feeling better after your root canal, I’ve had a few, not fun at all!

One other thought, Pooh I think of how you have said many times that the struggles we have with others is not about them, but about what’s in our own hearts. You are so right on! But Christ will prevail if we are patient and trusting Him to work out what’s in us and replace it with Him. Or even if we are NOT so patient, lol.

  13. poohpity says:

Joyce, I would love to take credit for that but that is what Paul was teaching in his letter to the Roman church (end of chapter 1 and the beginning of chapter 2) and through much pain in my life have learned it to be true. It is easier to see the sin in others(real or imagined) that has taken root in my own life or to blame others for my behavior. You are so right Jesus is not done with us yet and it is common in all mankind so I know I am not alone in that. That is what grace is all about. Praise God He never gives up on us even when others do. :-)

I was thinking about how much we take things like the moon for granted. We know it is there and gives a light in the night sky, has something to do with the tides, gravity, seasons but I have not given praise to God for it just being there. I get so consumed with the small space of my world that I over look so many glorious things that the Lord has made even down to the smallest particle that can not be seen with the naked eye.

We have a place called the Biosphere II. It is a self contained little world within a sphere. They were trying to copy our earth in a much smaller form but they always have some problems or another that messes it up. Look at how scientists try and clone beings. I wonder if they ever figure out how very, very small they are and how absolutist grand our God is?

  14. joycemb says:

Eph.4:1-6 NLT Paul, through his imprisonment taught the how-to of unity in the body of Christ. The thing that is seemingly of great importance to God.

As you say, Pooh, looking at something outside, like the moon for example, lifts our eyes to the grandness of God. The reason for our faith and our learning to love one another.

  15. street says:

Revelation 12:1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 2 and she was with child; and she *cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.

  16. marma says:

Thank you all for such encouraging comments, and Mart, for this blog post. So wonderful to see the Lord lifted up by His people. My heart is uplifted today!

  17. SFDBWV says:

Luke 21:25, 26, 27, 28 “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon and in the stars; distress of nations with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring.”

It is interesting that Jesus rebuked the scribes and Pharisees of His generation as being “evil and adulterous” and “seeking after a sign” (Matthew 12:38, 39), yet gave plenty of reason to look for signs heralding His return and the end of the age.

Is it because of our instinctive nature to always make more out of every occurrence, always thinking there is something else behind them?

Or is it for encouragement, not to be distressed when these events occur, but to keep looking up; up to God and trusting Him no matter what we see or hear?

Chris, reading your thoughts I was moved by your reference to having suffered “deep depression”. Depression though common amongst most people seems a part of who we are and how we balance out our lives, yet “deep depression” is scary and dangerous. I pray that God remove this from your spirit and replace it with joy, even joy that makes no sense.

Surfing around on the internet a little this morning I see two items of interest (to me). The first being a reminder of a story I read some time ago about a “vortex” shaped as a perfect hexagon spinning around the planet Saturn’s north pole (Space.com).

Also on the Weather Channels web site a story of the discovery of a pulsar star about the size of a “city” but with the density of our sun yet a “million” times brighter.

Both stories produce a puzzle for the best astronomers of our world as their findings go against accepted understanding of things.

A reminder to me of the awesome power of our God and how little we know not only of His creation, but how little we really know of Him.

Just a little side note; several years ago I seen a very delightful story about close up pictures of the particles that make up the ring around Saturn. It turns out they are shaped like the planet, a ball with a bulge or ring around them. I laughed and said how God must have a sense of humor.

Also Pat sent me a little video of the original pictures and conversations between the Astronaut’s as they first orbited the moon and took the famous “earth rise” picture from “Youtube”.

Good morning Steve. Every situation is different, but in mine,When I realized where I was spiritually I talked to God about it and confessed my sin of pride and selfishness to Him. I then stopped the medication that was contributing to the depression and had my devotional time in “Our Daily Bread”. That was Thursday when I had the root canal at 11. At 4 I had my devotional time.Friday I had my devotional in the AM. Not nearly as early as yours but I am not a morning person. This morning the devotional in “Our Daily Bread” spoke directly to me. 20. remarutho says:

    Good Morning All —

Appreciate the relationship between the “two great lights” in earth’s sky — the sun and the moon — such that a body 1/400th the size of the other can cause the dark phenomenon of a solar eclipse. The apparent measure of these two “lights” is made in the book of Genesis with great accuracy. What a wonder!

How mindful our Creator God is of us — our fragility — and our need for God’s love. It seems to me the Lord’s call for believers is to prayerfully live out God’s love among skeptics through many hardships.

Jesus, before he tells his disciples that “the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light. and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken,” (Matt 24:29; Joel 2:10, 31) he tells them (us) that trouble is coming. The condition of persecution results from this: “many will fall away and will betray one another…because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.” (Matt 24:12)

    As you put it, Mart:
“…these two great lights have a way of pointing beyond themselves to the difference between the God described here and everything else that can only reflect him– more or less.”

Jesus is exponentially more glorious than earth’s golden star, the sun. Our hearts apparently will grow as cold as the silvery moon — and humanity’s fallen heart seem to hide God’s great goodness.

    Blessings all day,
    Maru

  22. foreverblessed says:

O dear Maru, you could try the ctrl A, next time!

The moon reflects the sun, I have read somewhere about the little clouds in the sky, just before sunrise, that lit up by the sun, that is approaching to sunrise. The sun isn’t there yet, but the little clouds show that he is coming. That is more of us, showing that Christ is not there yet, but He is coming.

The sun, moon and stars, what does God want to tell us what their meaning is of them in our lives?
Mart gave one thing: the Sun portraying God, the Source of all light, the moon, that what reflects what comes from God….
    Street gave Rev 12:1
and Genesis 1:16 sun moon and stars on the 4 th day of Creation
and Joseph had this dream of the sun moon and stars.
What is the meaning for us in our spiritual life?

  23. foreverblessed says:

    Some more on Genesis:
    Psalm 136:9
    Jeremiah 31:35
    Job 9:9
    Job 38:31-33
From Gills commentary on Gen 1:14-19
Contrast the foolishness of modern cosmology with the writings of the early church father, Theophilus when he states:

On the fourth day the luminaries came into existence. Since God has foreknowledge, he understood the nonsense of the foolish philosophers who were going to say that the things produced on earth came from the stars, so that they might set God aside. In order therefore that the truth might be demonstrated, plants and seeds came into existence before stars. For what comes into existence later cannot cause what is prior to it.”

  24. remarutho says:

Got through it, Forever! Safety tip: Keep cat off computer! :o)

Recently published historical research into full lunar eclipses, it seems, indicates that the 2014 – 2015 series of “blood moons” is meaningful for the Nation of Israel — and therefore the whole world. The past three such series marked massive movements of God’s chosen people (1492, 1949, 1967).

This research has caused some Jesus-followers to be stirred to predict a great shaking of what is. It is for us to be found prayerful and sharing the Good News when the Lord appears, whenever that will be. Maranatha!

    Maru

  25. joycemb says:

Maru I’ve just been reading about how shariah has become involved in the financial dealings in America and all I have to say is I pray the shaking occurs before our freedoms are lost. And I agree we all need to be prayerful and sharing the Good News while we can.

    Jesus is Lord!
    Jesus saves!
    Because He loves us!
    Amen!

  26. remarutho says:

    Yes Joyce!

Many huge assets in our country (and all countries) are being moved onto the world market. By prayer and trust in the Lord we may be a non-anxious presence in our families and in our communities. What is there but to be trusting and waiting on Jesus Christ? Blood moons are a wake-up call when they appear at such significant times, it seems to me. Watch and pray!

    Yours,
    Maru

  27. SFDBWV says:

I learned a new word yesterday and of course its meaning; “The total eclipse of the moon and the rising of the sun simultaneously is a “selenelion”, a phenomenon that celestial geometry says cannot happen.”

Isn’t that amazing that on October the 8th millions of people witnessed an occurrence that “cannot” happen.

Anyone interested in reading of the “Blood Moon” and its connection to Israel can read all about it in John Hagee’s book
“Four Blood Moons” (Something is about to change).

We are having a very wet month here, as well as a cold one. It is 36 degrees as I write and fog as thick as it gets. Yesterday morning was one of those odd observations for me as it was drizzling and foggy yet I could see the bright Gibbous moon shining through the clouds above me.

Hope all are warm dry and safe wherever you may be.

Did anyone else have this happen? I thought the entire RBC site had gone down.

  29. SFDBWV says:

Very few young people think about their lives being mapped out, planned or set into motion by an unseen God. But old or older people have the luxury of having lived long enough to “reflect” on their lives and see a guiding hand upon it.

If their lives have been filled with the observation of others as well as the many trials and difficulties they themselves have had to suffer they may either have a “vision” of a brighter future for mankind or a darker one.

Hope is quite a gift as it stands in defiance against any and all situations of despair.

Some may see death as the loss of everything, but God provided hope even against death in the resurrection of Jesus and the promise of a better life to come, even after death.

Jesus even went on to say that we should not fear the one who may kill us, but to fear the one who controls our eternal soul.

I remember a time when people looked forward to a future of flying cars, robot maids, miracle medicine and even controlling the weather for a consistently perfect existence.

What went wrong? Why are our books, movies and television about an apocalyptic world filled with darkness, loss and suffering?

Are we in control of our destiny or is our destiny in control of us?

Have we proven that when we are in control, without God in control of us, that it always leads to destruction?

“Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.”

Encouragement from that same unseen God, to have faith and trust in Him and in the end of all things (even death) all will be “fine”.

Don’t fear the reaper, or a “blood moon”.

Thank goodness Bubbles, I thought maybe I had said something yesterday morning that had upset everyone all over the world…

    Steve

  31. foreverblessed says:

Steve, well then these people are wrong about that!
If there is a lunar eclipse then it is seen on manyb places on earth: some see it at moonrise (at that time the sun sets), and some at moonset and at that time the sun rises.
As there is only an eclipse of the moon possible when the sun is at opposite side of the moon, that is when there is full moon: the earth stands between sun and moon.

The calendar of Israel was a lunar calendar. The month started with the new moon.
The first month of the year starts with the first new moon in spring.
The first fesitval starts on the 15th of the first month, at sunset of the 14th
So the 14th of the first month was the Passover.
The Fall Festivals start at the first day of the 7th month, the Feast of Trumpets, (that would also be the first day of the economical year, the day when the 50th year would start, the day all the debts are cancelled.)

The new moon is when the moon stands between the sun and the earth, so we see the back of the moon, it is only lit a little (at the right side.)
At full moon the moon is earth is between the sun and the moon, we see the lighted sight of the moon, full and round. That would be at the end of the 14th day, that is the beginning of the 15th day.
Two times a year that would be a Festival, the first month and the 7th month, see Leviticus 23 on that.

  32. SFDBWV says:

Foreverblessed, every time I see you post I am reminded of “Davids” a fellow countryman of us both and wonder what ever became of him.

I learned of the word “selenelion” from an astronomy science comentary concerning the “blood moon” that occured the 8th. (Space.com)

We here in the USA have a new story rising in the news that out shines the news of the moon, it is “Ebola” and I believe we can also see a connection to end time events with regards to “pestilence” as well as odd occurences in the heavens.

I think this is a very important change in view point of mankind. the Bible constantly encourages us or commands us and implores us to be steadfast and hold on till the end. not to give up your hope in God to preserve protect and bless you even in death. oh you will not be separated from God’s love, but you will be separated from sin and all it causes. because He Hates sin with all of His Being. 37. foreverblessed says:

The topic has moved on, but this one of the blood moon, still has to sink in.
God gave in Genesis on the 4rth day the sun and the moon, and they were to be as signs.
The amplified bible says: signs of Gods provision.
In looking to the sun and moon, we have a sign, that it is God who provides, for our daily needs,
but much more important: for our eternal needs:
    What is that sign?
That surprised me this week of pondering over the blood moon:
In Joel 2:28-32 it is said, the sun will be darkened and the moon turn into blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
Peter cites the whole passage in Acts 2:16-21, and then he explains that this was all about Jesus dying on the Cross!
Why didn’t I see that before?
The sign of the sun and the moon: That great and dreadful day of the Lord, when the sun was darkened, and the moon turned into blood, was the day that Jesus was crucified.
The judgment on sin has taken place! Jesus bears the sin of the world.

I was always looking forward to that dreadful day, since I was a young kid, and I forgot that the day already has been, Jesus is victorious on the Cross, everything is settled.
We now have to work out what Jesus has wrought within.
If we say that Jesus must come, the first thing we do now, is to make sure that Jesus life is worked out in my life.
If He says, that I have to love my enemy, have I learned that. Have I asked God to give me the power to do so. To work out all the beatitudes in my life, Matt 5:3-10, and the whole of Matt 5, 6 and 7. Have I worked them out in my life. Do I turn the other cheek? Or do I get angry that they smacked me in the first place. I have to admit, the latter is the case mostly, I still have to die to my old man, and learn to live in Love, conquer all evil in love, like Jesus did.

Isn’t the church as a whole not having to grow more like into the beatitudes
