As Philae Sleeps

Some of us have lived long enough to remember the Russian accomplishment of putting Uri Gagarin in space, followed by the US achievement of landing Neil Armstrong on the moon. Now European scientists have given us a new memory—maybe even more amazing and unforgettable!!

Will we ever forget the day this week when we first saw those crisp images of a comet called 67p, known affectionately as “Churi”? Felt like a child again. Couldn’t imagine the 25 year vision and 10 year effort— and all of the math, science, technology and gift of human genius it took to to pull this off.

Isn’t it ironic though that the robotic mission lander has fallen, asleep, at least temporarily, for lack of light?

Seems to me that we might have something in common with Philae, even as she is hundreds of millions of miles from us, flying 40,000 mph through space on the back of a comet. While Philae tries to help its designers look for clues to the beginning of the universe, she too needs something as mystical and as mysterious as light to carry out the amazing mission of her designers.

If only Philae could only start tweeting on her own, from Churi…“Through him all things were made… without him nothing was made that has been made.In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind… The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:3-5).

Being a science enthusiast I have been also following the European Space Agency’s landing of a robotic explorer on the comet. It is an amazing feat of human accomplishment to be able to hitch a ride on a comet.

Several years back I remember a group of highly educated misguided enthusiasts got all dressed up in new jogging clothes and sneakers and committed group suicide in order to “hitch a ride” on comet “Hale-Bop”.

One a physical success the other only left to the spirit of imagination.

Genesis 1:3 “let there be light” Genesis 1:4 “and God saw the light, that it was good.”

There is so much not known about the universe that even our probes are limited in what can be learned by what we know to look for.

The robot needs light for energy, it is the energy behind light that also causes the erosion of the comet in what we see as the comets tail.

My very first reaction to the picture of the comets surface was that it looked un-eroded, rather jagged and with sharp features. Making me think of how could something that is supposed to be as old as they think still look so “fresh”.

Man’s quest for knowledge taking him to the farthest reaches of the universe and his quest for God right before him yet unrecognized.

15 degrees this morning with the promise of colder days ahead.

    Good Morning BTA Friends —

I also sent up a cheer and a prayer of thanks as the robot landed on Churi. What a wonder! Cannot in conscience attribute soul to the craft, but my heart is with the army of scientists who have put her there — and are standing by for more data.

It is vital to find the molecules (water? aminos? who knows?) embedded in the comet. As the whole thing makes its orbit, scientists say it will experience seasons, so we should see “Lazarus” wake up and sing to us! It is winter, but spring is on its way.

    Blessings,
    Maru

26F this morning — with sunshine forecast. Should warm up nicely and provide another stunning fall day in the valley.

If Philae could tweet that, it would seem that it has more sense than the theory of the scientists that the building blocks of the vapors emitted from comets are what “‘seeds’ Earth with water and perhaps even the ingredients for life”. I wonder if Rosetta tweeted everything we thought is only a very miniscule picture of a grand design from the thoughts of awesome Creator but it is so interesting to study.

64 degrees F here this beautiful November morning.

yes, light has come but many still do not understand. do you think this is a misguided attempt to reach out and find God? reminds me of the song “one tin soldier”

  7. SFDBWV says:

Fiction allows for us to contemplate the farthest reaches of our imagination, science fiction actually has little to do with science, but usually deals with other worldly imagining.

“Star Trek” used the term “space, the last frontier” in its opening credits to introduce us to the programs intent of exploring the endless possibilities of an endless universe.

The situation remains that everything we look at or look for relates to what we already know. We look for what we already know hoping to find something we don’t.

We don’t hear too much anymore in the news about the particle collider that was built in order to explain the origins of the universe, and while “Philae” sleeps we only have a picture of a rock. A very unique rock, but still just a rock.

We can hope that the solar cells find enough light to further information gathering, but it still needs that light God spoke into being at the very beginning of creation in order to “live”.

There is so much information given right there in those opening comments of Genesis. We can explore them with just as much enthusiasm and perhaps begin to learn the origins of the universe and who it is that originated it.

  8. SFDBWV says:

Street if you are a “Sci-Fi” fan you may remember the films “2001 Space Odyssey” and its conclusion “Space Odyssey 2010”. Both had heavy reference to God.

Though I don’t recall the name of the movie, many years ago I seen this movie about those agents and agencies that listen to space noise suddenly receiving quotes from Scripture being transmitted from Mars.

The results of all of these movies changing events and attitudes here on earth.

While I believe that we search for knowledge for knowledge’s sake, I also believe that all this science exploration of inner and outer space is an indirect search for evidence that God exists by looking for evidence that he doesn’t; as we understand Him to be.

Look at the implications of what we understand about our beliefs if we were to find life as we have it here on planet earth not to be special, but rather common throughout the universe.

How would it effect what we believe about what the Bible has to say? Would it matter?

Such a subtle change in what we understand is no less the subtle lie told to Eve about the forbidden fruit.

It challenges what we believe God has said.

Perhaps Philae is kept in the dark in order to keep us in the dark…for now.

  9. remarutho says:

    Good Morning All —

It is ironic that the robot is sleeping! Sunlight would be the remedy, but apparently the rock has to move into light-filled space. Plenty of room for poetry in this.

I also believe that humans will not “disprove” God’s presence anywhere in the universe. All is God-breathed. Most especially, the human mind is put together by our Creator so that we search and search — and wonder. While God is worshiped with the mind, the truth of God’s glory is perceived with the faculty of faith, not intellect alone, it seems to me. We are created in God’s image, which is spiritual.

    Maru

  10. SFDBWV says:

That is the thing, isn’t it Maru that we are made in the image of God. Both physically and spiritually.

God wrote the Ten Commandments with His finger.
God showed His backside to Moses
God saw that the light was good.
    God sits on His throne.
    God hears our prayers.
    God speaks to us.

God is an eternal spiritual being.

He existed before there was anything and at that moment of the creation of everything, everything came into existence.

Everything that we can understand and relate to.

My Watchtower and Mormon friends can’t grasp how God the Father can also be God the Son. They relate it our existence and so can’t understand how I could be my own son or how my father could also be me. So they reject belief in the Trinity as being one.

Only faith can see before everything existed. It is that same faith that allows us to *see* the future.

Philae can’t take a picture of faith nor analyze it in it’s *oven*. It can only see what God has already done.

they broke it. they were on a two year retrofit and improvement. they still found the particle they were looking for and won a Nobel price for it.

it will be more interesting when they try to fire up the experimental fusion reactor in france. really don’t know where they are at on it. just know it was so expensive that almost all governments of the world had to go in on it.

  12. street says:

it’s funny how you mention the word trinity. been struggling with it and the incarnation. important to understand, yes. important to hit people over the head with, no! humble knowledge is better than prideful knowledge. pride and arrogance just prove you still do not know. tough thoughts. 1 John is even harder. be like andrew, bring them to Jesus and His word and no more.

  13. oneg2dblu says:

Dear brothers and sisters… we who know Jesus, love Him, and by faith we continue in that love relationship.
Those without that God-given type of faith, knowledge, awakening or blessing, deposit or light, can not believe as we do, they can not receive as we do, or grow and further invest or shine forth for Jesus as we can, because they are not yet fully His.
If the intelligence of man alone could solve that problem, then God as Father, Christ as Savior, and the Holy Spirit as Helper, would not be hidden from the wise and seen as foolishness to them.
If that type of faith gifted wisdom could be taught by anyone else or anything other than His Spirit, by through Divine Revelation as a gift from God, then man could earn it, package it, control it, overpower it, and build his own church upon it.
But the God who controls all things, has put Eternity in the heats of man, and man is helpless to find the God-given solution by himself.
By design, or default, man is born asleep, and only God can fully wake him up.
I would tell you how lovely it is in Florida right now, but the tidal wave of people would be overwhelming.
So, sunny and in the seventies without a cloud visible may sound like pure Science Fiction to you, and I’ll leave it at that!
    Have a Blessed Day

  14. joycemb says:

Amen Gary! I was just thinking of how we have nothing we have not received from Christ Jesus. Whether spiritual gifts or knowledge of how the universe works it’s all His. Spending time with Him is how we grow in becoming more like Him. May all be blessed in Jesus today, Joyce

you know, a long time ago people thought the earth was the center of the cosmoses. it may not be the center of Heaven but with as much attention God is paying to earth they maybe right after all. thank you God for going out of your way for me!

  16. AmazedbyHis grace says:

Good to see your posts again! Believing, studying, and taking time to listen to God opens many doors to heaven. A simple lesson from the Lord that hit me at just the right time, is a great part of my testimony. Feisty even at two years old, the Lord sure had a great challenge with me. Many tragedies laid on my path, including 4 near deaths. Though I felt that maybe God was trying to get my attention, I was still blinded. It wasn’t any of the tragedies, nor near death experiences that sent me to my knees. One day I said “Yes, I will do devotions with you mom.” That day, God’s word called me to the place I needed to be. Now who would of thought the one who got the parties started would be the one who was teaching bible lessons and held a high position in a church 1 1/2 years later? Only God!

  17. SFDBWV says:

I am reminded of the story of Lazarus and the rich man (Luke 16:20-31).

Here we have the rich man in *hell* and Lazarus *far off* in the comfort pf Abraham.

Amazing that Abraham is able to communicate to the rich man from where he stood as in Luke 16:26 Abraham tells the rich man that there is a *great gulf* *fixed* so that they that would pass back and forth cannot.

When we look up into the night sky and see the billions and billions of lights we think of as stars it turns out most are not stars, but entire galaxies with billions and billions of stars within each. We measure the distance from these lights in terms of how many earth years it takes for their light to travel to us from their location. The numbers become staggering, incomprehensible and unimaginable.

Our comet is locked into an orbit around our sun confined to the outer reaches of our solar system alone.

There is a “great gulf” between those specks of light and us here on earth. Yet we can see them and with the aid of our advanced technology see the more clearly. However still only able to observe them, not travel between them, because of the “fixed” gulf between us.

From this story of Lazarus we learn there also exists places such as this place of torment and Paradise each also separated by a great gulf, seen but not interacted by *us*.

Because *everything* that is has been created by God, God is everywhere His creation is and so is not restricted by anything.

From the cross Jesus also descended into the darkness and preached unto the spirits (1 Peter 3:19, 20) and then ascended into heaven at the right hand of God (1 Peter 3:22).

Like Mart I would love to hear that Philae transmitted the words of John 1:3-5, but just like the story of Lazarus as told in Luke 16:31 people still would not *believe*.

Have to wonder myself at the faith-resistant heart, Steve.

I conclude that the persuasion of the Holy Spirit comes in different ways to various personalities, characters and mind-sets.

It seems to me that if a person has heard the Word of God in some format or another, the heart is softened — then the world-view can change, then allowing the possibility of one true God. So, the willingness to surrender self-sovereignty can enter. Sadly, there are hearts that admire faith but cannot enter into it. The question is, if one does not trust in God, can (s)he trust anybody?

When Philae wakes up, we will learn more about the universe and about how its Creator moves and works.

As we grapple to conceive the immensity of the universe and how we are just a nano-speck on a speck, I cant help think that God still holds us so precious in His eyes that He still sent His Son to die for us. Praise God!

  20. SFDBWV says:

On a lighter side Maru ever since we have picked up this subject the song “The Highwayman” has been running through my mind with Johnny Cash’s singing he is “a starship sailing through the universe divine”.

Yes Maru I agree that when we contemplate the vastness of all we take in it is very, very special that the same God who created all of this still has the intimacy with us that He does and that He did a thing also so vast on that cross that we cannot fully appreciate it as yet.

We are having a foggy warm 44 degree rain with the promise of only 10 degrees f for a high tomorrow.

    Awaiting His return.

    Steve

  21. oneg2dblu says:

Yes Maru… It is written… “Faith, then, results from hearing and hearing is through the message of Christ.”

But the word also goes on to say, Have they not heard? Do they not understand?

Christ says, “Whoever has ears let them hear.”

Yet, even the disciples who were with Him, did not understand the message in the parables.

How many times had I heard the word growing up in church, yet it did not penetrate or change me, until as Maru would say, the softening of my heart, where I surrendered and called upon Him, finding that He answered!
Like so many others my divine hearing came through the actual blessing of my daily reading of “Our Daily Bread,” for within a few weeks of faithfully reading I went from walking in the world, to walking back into the church, and finally hearing with opened ears, words in a worship song that broke me to my core and changed my life.
Did I experience flashing moments of belief during my life, I certainly thought so, mostly in times of trouble or fear, but this time things were different.
I was given understanding, through the renewing of my mind, and the softening of my heart.
Funny how the words of Jesus Loves Me that I first heard in Sunday School as a child, now rang out within me and echoed in my head, as if Hearing them for the first time, and fully understanding and believing each one.
So, my faith came by hearing, and through hearing the message of Chris.

It is a horribly dark and cold morning here, at 09 f degrees and dropping, the snow blowing up into an almost blinding blur, the only signs of life outside our house being the street lights and the few windows illuminated that can be seen. Hoping that the power stays on and we remain in comfort despite the weather.

I wonder what the weather is on our comet. Colder I am sure.

As we remain safe and comfortable inside our habitats this morning and given our subject I am reminded that we are also on a rock locked into an orbit around our sun jointly traveling tens of thousands of miles an hour through the dark recess of the universe.

We live under a canopy of protection and sustenance for life to exist that is not found anywhere else in our solar system. Look as we do, life here is precious and unique. Yet we show little regard for it.

We take everything for granted and like spoiled children always want more.

*If* we believe the statements given in Genesis, God set all of the lights in the night sky expressly for the purpose of showing us signs and seasons, days and years and to give light upon the earth. (Genesis 1:-19)

All of our study and looking throughout the cosmos, though interesting, seems to be chasing the wind.

What do we as a people hope to obtain from all of the study of the cosmos? Is our lives enriched, will we live longer and in harmony with each other?

We strain at a gnat and swallow a camel.

God is here among us, we need to study to improve our relationship with Him among each other.

“The Voice of God”, by Louis I. Newman
“I sought to hear the voice of God.
    And climbed the topmost steeple.
But God declared: “Go down again,
    I dwell among the people.”

Wish I could speak up for humanity’s righteousness, Steve. Even though I cannot, there is hope and help in the blood of Jesus. We also have the promised Advocate who came at Pentecost. He is a Helper, a Comforter — and especially an Advocate for us in the heavenly courts. (John 14:15, 16, 17)

There is no explaining why we have this wonderful seal and covering! There is just something about us — more particularly there is just something about Almighty God whose character is to love us — has loved, is loving and will love us. Such love is a precious inheritance. (Jer 31:1, 2, 3)

Praying for your area, Steve, and all in the path of this arctic blast. May God the Holy Spirit spread a covering over all there. Amen.

Would you all pray with me for my daughter I could list several areas that I can think of as her needs but God knows best what would be of help for her. My heart is crushed, my eyes swollen from three days of tears with sleepless nights and my stomach twisted into knots. My heart yearns to be able to help her but I know it is out of my hands. My only hope is in what the Lord can do, the miracle worker. Thank you, Deb

This morning in my reading I was reminded that there has been worship of the things in the sky for thousands of years, worshiping creation rather than the Creator. Thinking that this giant dusty popsicle(minus 70 degrees C) could be what seeds the earth of water or other ingredients for life is nothing new.

After seeing what God had done in the wilderness for Israel many still looked to the sky for a god. (Amos 5:26 NLT) Stephen also spoke of it right before he was stoned for serving the God of all that there was, is and is to come. (Acts 7:42-43 NLT)

It took this satellite ten years to reach it’s destination but God has given us minds that are curious. There is so very much to discover and learn but it seems to me that while many reach for the stars it all comes back to a creative, imaginative, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient God. I wonder if through these explorations if there will not be some that come to a point of belief through it all or because of it?

  32. SFDBWV says:

The Philae lander has detected organic molecules on the surface of its comet, scientists have confirmed.
Carbon-containing “organics” are the basis of life on Earth and may give clues to chemical ingredients delivered to our planet early in its history.
The compounds were picked up by a German-built instrument designed to “sniff” the comet’s thin atmosphere.

Other analyses suggest the comet’s surface is largely water-ice covered with a thin dust layer.

The European Space Agency (Esa) craft touched down on the Comet 67P on 12 November after a 10-year journey.
Dr Fred Goessmann, principal investigator on the Cosac instrument, which made the organics detection, confirmed the find to BBC News. But he added that the team was still trying to interpret the results.
It has not been disclosed which molecules have been found, or how complex they are.

There’s a tradeoff – once it gets too hot, Philae will die as well. There is a sweet spot”
End Quote Prof Mark McCaughrean Senior science adviser, Esa

But the results are likely to provide insights into the possible role of comets in contributing some of the chemical building blocks to the primordial mix from which life evolved on the early Earth.
Preliminary results from the Mupus instrument, which deployed a hammer to the comet after Philae’s landing, suggest there is a layer of dust 10-20cm thick on the surface with very hard water-ice underneath.
The ice would be frozen solid at temperatures encountered in the outer Solar System – Mupus data suggest this layer has a tensile strength similar to sandstone.
“It’s within a very broad spectrum of ice models. It was harder than expected at that location, but it’s still within bounds,” said Prof Mark McCaughrean, senior science adviser to Esa, told BBC News.

Philae has gone into standby because of low power
“People will be playing with [mathematical] models of pure water-ice mixed with certain amount of dust.”
He explained: “You can’t rule out rock, but if you look at the global story, we know the overall density of the comet is 0.4g/cubic cm. There’s no way the thing’s made of rock.
“It’s more likely there’s sintered ice at the surface with more porous material lower down that hasn’t been exposed to the Sun in the same way.”
After bouncing off the surface at least twice, Philae came to a stop in some sort of high-walled trap.
“The fact that we landed up against something may actually be in our favour. If we’d landed on the main surface, the dust layer may have been even thicker and it’s possible we might not have gone down [to the ice].”
Scientists had to race to perform as many key tests as they could before Philae’s battery life ran out at the weekend.
    On re-charge
A key objective was to drill a sample of “soil” and analyse it in Cosac’s oven. But, disappointingly, the latest information suggest no soil was delivered to the instrument.
“We didn’t necessarily see many organics in the signal. That could be because we didn’t manage to pick up a sample. But what we know is that the drill went down to its full extent and came back up again.”
“But there’s no independent way to say: This is what the sample looks like before you put it in there.”
Scientists are hopeful however that as Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko approaches the Sun in coming months, Philae’s solar panels will see sunlight again, allowing the batteries to re-charge – allowing it to perform more science.
“There’s a trade off – once it gets too hot, Philae will die as well. There is a sweet spot,” said Prof McCaughrean.
He added: “Given the fact that there is a factor of six, seven, eight in solar illumination and the last action we took was to rotate the body of Philae around to get the bigger solar panel in, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to think it may well happen.
“By being in the shadow of the cliff, it might even help us, that we might not get so hot, even at full solar illumination. But if you don’t get so hot that you don’t overheat, have you got enough solar power to charge the system.”
The lander’s Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS), designed to provide information on the elemental composition of the surface, seems to have partially seen a signal from its own lens cover – which could have dropped off at a strange angle because Philae was not lying flat.

Reading yesterday and this morning about scientist’s attempt to *see* the skeleton of the “Big Bang” and NASA’s newest “Time machine” telescope called “The James Webb Space Telescope.

Both are new devices attempting to see the origins of the universe as well as be able to analyze the information they detect. Reference made to the fact they will be able to see pollution created on alien planets, by its inhabitants.

There is just something in my spirit that keeps going back to Genesis 11:6 whereby in the following verse Genesis 11:7, God says “let us” go down and confound their language that they may not understand one another.

I know that they had been told to disperse and fill the earth with their descendants and that this establishment of different languages is how God forced mankind at the Tower to fulfill His desire. Since people began to speak differently they no longer trusted each other and so gathered together in a common language distancing themselves from others.

A distrust that continues to today and the cause of many wars and heartache.
Is our trust in science another Tower of Babel? An affront to God? An attempt to show that we no longer need antiquated religions to give us purpose? That being human is purpose enough?

I admit there is a part of me that loves the enlightenment of learning all about everything, be it on the planet or out of it. But also a part of it that says what good is it if we forget God and make Jesus irrelevant along the way of discovery.

If we understand the deeply dark and evil intent of ISIS they want to return to an 11th century mentality and society, willing to kill everyone and every modern development in order to do so.

Whereas I applaud our “western” accomplishments I also desire that perfect Kingdom of God Jesus desires for us, but does it have to come with an abandonment of all the accomplishments, modern conveniences and revelations of knowledge that we have amassed as a people?

Can we see God’s hand and blessing upon our modern achievements or are they a foundation that will eventually fall apart?

Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of Mankind and seen the statue’s feet of the mixture of iron and clay supernaturally destroyed bringing down mankind’s rule. (Daniel 2:31-35)

  39. remarutho says:

    Good Morning All —

Trying to wrap my mind around Deuteronomy just now. It seems we are called to re-member (continually bring our members to) Torah which serves us in exile, in exodus and in renewal — reflecting the work of Christ in us, the hope of glory

Being too much “in my head” in searching for God’s will yields little fruit, in my opinion. Rather, the daily habit of seeking God’s face in Scripture, prayer and holy conferencing with other believers allows me to experience God’s presence directly — more concretely than intellectually alone.

We creatures, it seems to me, have to practice covenant — while God is God’s Word which is covenant. May we cling to the Rock as Philae is clinging to Churi — one day at a time, waiting for dawn. (Deut 26:17, 18, 19)

  40. poohpity says:

God’s Will-to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our Lord.(Micah 6:8 NIV)

It seems the gentiles had it so much easier than those who were brought up around the old covenant. The disciples seemed to confront the many times that Jewish believers tried to bring that covenant back into the picture repeatedly as a burden to those who were freed from it. It reared it’s ugly head many times as an affront to the Gospel. It also seems that the accuser uses it to weigh down many believers still. People tend to take something so beautiful and easy as the Good News and turn it into a means to prove self righteousness.

Jesus did it all and it is finished. The final sacrifice for sin has been paid in full by His faithful obedience and what remains is Grace. When our minds, hearts and strength is given over to belief in the Way we are free to do good. To study all of creation and realize God created so we can enjoy and give Him alone Glory. The creation can not create it’s self although many try to figure it out or even to duplicate it. :-)

One can not read the old covenant without the sacrifices needed when it was broken. God knew it would be broken hence all the sacrifices of blood, burnt offerings; lambs, rams, bulls, birds; grain offerings; oil; spices. Now we give the sacrifice of praise. (Hebrews 13:15 NIV)

  41. poohpity says:

Thank you all so much for your prayers. I will let you know how God answers them.

Joyce, I am sure she is aware of her sin I hope she becomes more aware of God’s grace.

Steve, am interested in knowing about the other family matters you speak of?

  42. poohpity says:

We can put Philae on a comet yet we do not know how to get running water, sanitation and electricity to millions in Africa and other countries. Go figure!!

  43. oneg2dblu says:

Pooh…We certainly know how to fix those things, and probably have the ability too, but doing that would be in conflict with our current worldly driven priorities.

Were busy expending ourselves on Space Exploration, wasting absurdly huge amounts of money and effort to control the masses by ever expanding the government’s control over them, making for them (the new law) and the latest new deal or deals being made both behind closed doors, and also claiming they are doing so, right in front of the intentionally uninformed, or misinformed voters.

    Go figure!

Thank God, we also know that He is in control of all things, and He alone knows the greatest needs of all mankind, by giving us a command in His word, the great commission, as our way to help the masses, and by giving us our greatest weapon against all this current battle we face and all suffering, “Prayer.”

  45. street says:

There is just something in my spirit that keeps going back to Genesis 11:6 whereby in the following verse Genesis 11:7, God says “let us” go down and confound their language that they may not understand one another.

6 The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have [d]the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be [e]impossible for them.

did you see that “nothing impossible for them.”

i believe God wants to make a distinction between good and evil in the world. the people where acting as one and losing that distinction. God did not tell them to do that so they were on their own. his children were being so corrupted He stepped in to move his plan forward. make no mistake, God is in control. even when the babylonians came to town, the romans or the nazis. it is a very difficult thing to live next door to God.

  46. poohpity says:

Gary, if we only pray and do not reach out to help, what good is what we say we believe. I think our greatest weapon against any thing the world offers is the ability to do good. (James 2:15-17 NIV; 1 John 3:17 NIV)

Street your post made me smile

    Thank you Street!

  49. street says:

dear poo, if you reach out without praying for help and direction, are you not just another government program?
remember shrewd as a snake innocent as a dove?

  50. poohpity says:

dear street, for believers we already have that direction in us. When do we need to ask for help to do good is that not part of who we are in Christ? I have no idea how one could confuse that with another government program. The government uses funds from those who pay taxes or money borrowed from other governments. Just think if more Christians stepped up to the plate there would be no need for government programs just as the believers in the 1st century church shared what they had with everyone of their brothers/sisters so no one was in need. If one has to pray about doing good I wonder where there heart was before they prayed.

I think you may find being shrewd as snakes but as gentle as doves has to do with persecution not helping people who need help. Matt 10:16-17 NIV

Helping the needy has always been part of God’s plan. That is one reason they left the outside of the grain, grape and other fields untouched so those that were in need could glean and then the farmers were guaranteed plenty with their harvests. God has always had a welfare system in place and since it is all from Him anyway who are we not to give and share.

God’s people/sheep will be separated from the those who profess but do not live for the Lord by the ones who did help feed, clothe and shelter. Matt 25:31-40 NLT for the sheep and Matt 25:41-46 NLT for the goats.

  51. street says:

poo do you remember the story of the cup bearer with the long face before the king? he prayed and got a favorable response from the king. it was about rebuilding his home town, Jerusalem.

i heard a guy say the west has given africa 2 trillion $ since 1950 and not much to show for it. his name is ernosto sirolli. the speach is on ted. he is funny and very frank about how to help people. his answer may surprise you. in it he mentions a book by an african woman called,” dead aid” this guy is worth a listen. if it gets us to listen better to God it will be worth it. when i think of the book of Jeremiah. the first thing to come to mind is, “your not listening” God said this would be the outcome of the entire book for the people jeremiah spoke too. you said,”Helping the needy has always been part of God’s plan.” yes but that is not the primary part.

  52. cbrown says:

Street, two weeks ago I began researching Joni Eareckson Tadi. The following excerpt fom “A Deeper Healing” speaks to your point. “Those were days when it was my first plea for help. My sister would come into the bedroom then from that time out and she’d open up the drapes, let in the sunshine, get me dressed, sit me in my wheel chair, wheel me to the living room and pull my wheel chair up to a music stand much like this one, plop a large Bible on it, put a mouth stick in my mouth and there I would sit day after day, flipping through the pages of the Bible, this way and that, trying to make sense of it all.

Of course I was still interested in healing. I still wanted to know what God’s Word had to say about it. And I found out in the first chapter of the gospel of Mark. You know the story. There Jesus is healing a great deal of diseased and disabled people all throughout the day and long past sunset. Next morning the crowds return, Simon and his companions go rushing looking for Jesus, but He’s nowhere to be found. That’s because Jesus had gotten up early and gone off to a solitary place to play…to pray. And when they finally find Him, they tell Him about this crowd of disabled and diseased people at the bottom of the hill all looking for healing. And I thought what Jesus responded to them was so curious because it says in the 38th verse, “Jesus said, ‘Let’s go somewhere else, to the nearby villages in towns where I can preach there because this is why I have come.’” And that’s when it hit me, O did it hit me. It’s not that Jesus did not care about all those sick and diseased people, it’s just their problems weren’t His main focus. The gospel was. The gospel that says sin kills, hell is real, but God is merciful and His Kingdom can change you and Jesus is the way. And whenever people miss this, whenever they just started coming to Jesus to get their pain and problems fixed, the Savior would always back away. No wonder I had been so depressed. O my goodness. I was in to Jesus just to get my problems and my paralysis fixed. Yes, Jesus cares about suffering people. He cares when you’ve been paralyzed for 38 years, or 46 years.”

  53. poohpity says:

What has the cup bearer rebuilding the wall have to do with doing good or Jeremiah giving God’s Word for Israel to come back to their God got to do with believers doing good? Doing good for the believer is after all obeying the command to love others. John 13:34-35 NLT I guess you are speaking of the primary part as being sharing the Good News/Gospel but what better way to share the Gospel than to serve others by feeding, clothing, housing, caring for sick or broken people or visiting those in prison or reverting to using words if necessary.

Although I do not know how much money has been given to Africa since 1950 but however much that is, much has been done there already but there will always be the poor among us and much more work to do. Can the Lord count on you to serve and/or spread the Gospel?

  54. poohpity says:

May God bless all of you who are hard hit by the winter!

The light of the sun energizes Philae, if the sun does not shine on Philae it turns into a sleep mode.
The light of mankind is Jesus!
My light is Jesus, “Look to Me and be saved”, so I train myself to look up to Jesus. Just only the looking up in faith, then His power touches me, and cleanses me, bit by bit. If only I keep looking up every day, and each day in a more frequent matter, till I live from Him only.
Philae turns into a sleep mode, if I am not lighted by Jesus, then I still have my natural life, it will go on as normal. I pray that I live a life in the Spirit, that eventually all that I do, while I am lying down or sitting up, all is done in the Life of Christ, that is in the Power of the Holy Spirit.

  57. foreverblessed says:

About helping people, lately this saying struck me, it did already a little last year, but this year much deeper, from Twolistereners, God at eventide of November 16. Where Jesus says: You have helped to poor, the sick, the ones who need help. But I want you to go furhter, and stand aside those who do not seem to need your help, the difficult people, the pride people, the people that think they can run their own lives, the people who have faith that seems odd to you. Can you help them too?

Anyway, I give the complete text of Nov 16 God at eventide:
“Treat all as those about whom I care.
You would visit the poor, the sick or those in prison, knowing full well I would see it as done unto Me.
I want you now to go still further along the way of my Kingdom.  You contact many who are not poor, not sick, not in prison.
They may be opposed to you.  They may disregard much that you consider of value, they may not seem to need your help.  Can you treat these, too, as you would wish to treat Me? They may be in need greater than the others you long to aid.
To you their aims may seem unworthy, their self-seeking may antagonize you.  When I said, “Judge not,” was I not including them too?
Can you limit My words to suit your own inclinations?
This is not an easy task I set you, but your way is the Way of Obedience.  I did not suggest to My followers one they could take or not as they willed.  My “Judge not” was imperative, and a new commandment I gave unto them that they should love.
For those who do not yet name Me Lord, Love is the only magnet that will draw them to Me.
Be true, be strong, be loving.

But the same principle goes here, as for Philae, that is energized by the sun, all our work for others, all our thoughts for others should not be in our own strength, but should be energized by Jesus through the Holy Spirit. And He will also advise us, in what is wise to do. Do we stay to help or, as Jesus did in Mark 1:37-38, walk to another village so to speak.

  60. oneg2dblu says:

Great post and comments… Are we not all who have the Spirit of the Lord living in us, each in a different part of our walk with Him, each with different gifts, and each with a common but also distinctly different calling upon our disciple being?
Rather then us telling others what they need to do, and how they should do it, shouldn’t we each address the Lord in our own prayer or language, the one that radiates within us, the one that hears from His Word as we encounter it, specifically given to each as God has already planned for them, and not the one others press us to employ, or not to be squeezed into the world’s mold.
Our sharing of verses is each of us trying to explain to others how God has impressed upon us His particular message.
I can not know what word of God is given to another, what gifting another has, what blessings another receives from God, or who they are in Christ unless their is sharing relationship.
All our voicing here is part of that relationship sharing and building.
Some is challenging us, some is painful, some is pleasing, some a blessing, but all is from God and His plan, if we are following Christ Jesus, the Spirit, and not caught up in the flesh.
Because according to the word of God, you can not drink from both the cup of good and evil at the same time.
Darkness can not overcome the light, it tries its best to hide from it, or cover it up, or extinguish it, even ban it, but God’s plans will not be changed, for He and His Word remains same forever, illuminated and alive!

  61. poohpity says:

I wonder if often what happens in our Christian lives is when we fail to hear that whisper of God time after time we sort of fall a sleep. I think Jesus described it like the troubles and worries in life push Him out or we no longer search for the pearls/treasures/coins of His Kingdom. In other words our life becomes more important than He is to us. Like our batteries have run down going through the motions and we need a recharge. Our relationship is just words with no meaning or wearing the label proudly as a Christian but the heart sleeps.

  62. oneg2dblu says:

Pooh… yes, we are like many others who need to be filled again and again because we are like leaky vessels.

  63. jeff1 says:

The modern world is very different from in Jesus’s day for I know of people who give to charities, help the sick and poor and are non believers so it is difficult today to tell the difference between Christians and non if we are looking at doing good. Also with the Welfare State taking care of the sick and elderly it is no longer the Church community who feel responsible. There is also the fact that Health and Safety has become such a big focus that where I live people are reluctant to help others as if something happens while they are in their care the family of the person may hold them responsible. It is now a complex World (multi cultural) and attitudes and beliefs are much more varied. Non believers now are very quick to tell you to please keep your beliefs to yourself for they don’t share them. When I was growing up we listened to our parents and respected authority and that is not the case today and that is because a lot of those authorities did not behave in a way that would honour God yet claimed God to be on their side.
People all through history have abused their authority and turned people away from God instead of drawing them to him. I know a lot of people who say “I may not have done many good turns but I would never do anyone a bad turn”, which does not sound very Christian like, but at the very least I would say it is a very fair attitude in a World where if we are looking at the masses Christianity has failed. You may be doing your bit in your part of the World but on the World scene hatred drives people to commit terrible atrocities and some still say God is on their side and then we wonder why the younger people are looking to science rather then God. Individually we are trying to get it right but collectively (world wide) we are failing miserably. Christians interpret the bible differently so do religions, so in relation to someone doing evil against you, some will say turn the other cheek while others will say an for an eye. If Christians cannot agree on issues as important as this then how can we expect non-believers to take us seriously. Are Christian effective in the World today or is God using Science to draw a younger generation to fulfil his plan. God use what he sees fit and I am not sure that Christianity collectively is fit for God’s purpose with so many different view points getting in the way of growth.

i think when we grasp this we will never stop worshiping

  65. poohpity says:

jeff, I met a young lady at an airport and in our conversation she told me she had been going around the world to find God. She had just come back from Egypt and actually started crying because she was raised in a Christian home and the pressures put on her were great. She was telling me that the judgements, criticism and condemnation did not help her to see the grace of God and resulted in pushing her away. I held her and told her, “Sweetheart you are looking in the wrong place. You seem to be looking at Christians and not at Christ.” I went on to explain none of us Christians are perfect and we all need the grace of God sadly some really think they live a perfect life but if they are honest it is not so. She told me that she went all over looking and found Jesus again in the parking structure of the PHX airport. I asked if she had ever read the Bible and she said parts but not the whole. I told her she would see in those pages just how great God’s love is for all His imperfect people.

Honesty really helps in not shinning the light on us but on Jesus.

  66. oneg2dblu says:

jeff1… well said, and so true. The dividing lines between the world and its religions are almost indistinguishable at times just because some feel they do no harm, so that must mean they are doing good and godly.
Yet we who know from God’s word exactly what sin really is, that there are sins of commission and sins of omission, and doing what we feel is no harm, or what we feel is doing good is not always exactly in line or correctly following Christ.
Although Christ could have remained in one spot and continued healing everyone who came before Him, which is certainly doing good, He moved on to follow His Fathers plan, to take the message of the Gospel to other places as His Father directed His all steps.
If your not daily connected in a personal relationship with Christ, but only following a religion, then you are probably not daily directed by God, who daily directs Christ, who daily directs you by His Spirit.
Christ said, my Sheep hear my voice and follow Me.
No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Yes, that is a very narrow path to find for a world who currently does not know Him.

  67. joycemb says:

For those fond of history and old English style writing I found this prayer to be very humble and honest.

    Lord Astley’s Prayer ;
“Lord, help me today to realize that thou wilt be speaking to me through the events of the day, through people, through things, and through all creation. Give me ears, eyes and heart to perceive thee, however veiled thy presence may be. Give me insight to see through the exterior of things to the interior truth. Give me thy Spirit of discernment. O Lord, Thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget thee, do not Thou forget me. Amen.”

    sorry for shouting!!!

  70. poohpity says:

Maybe one day all His followers will rest in Him and allow Him to fight those battles. As He talks softly, kindly and gently to His children to encourage them to give it all over into His capable hands and stop striving but trusting/depending on Him instead.

  71. cbrown says:

Pooh, I do not think it is “instead”.Finally, my brethren be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day,

  72. poohpity says:

Chris, I guess if people would rather strive “instead” of trusting/depending on God they can. It just seems so futile and unproductive to me.

  73. poohpity says:

Isn’t the armor from God? With His armor we can stand. It is His salvation that we wear as a helmet to protect our minds with right believing, breastplate is His righteousness also right believing, the faith He has given us as shield. etc. All we have to do trust in Him, His care, put it on and stand.

  74. cbrown says:

But, God does not tell us that it will be easy. He promises us that he will give us the “victory” if we like Abraham,Job and countless other have faith in Him. As the “Discover the Word” study the last 2 weeks points out, we may go through a refining process that purifies us but God will be with us in the fire and has given us the armor so that we are protected in areas we are vulnerable.

  75. poohpity says:

I was not saying in any way life would be easy. We are promised there will be trails, struggles, hardships, sorrows, suffering tragedies, etc. but we can rest in God’s care. We do not have to strive in our own strength to get through life we can rest knowing God is in control.

  76. street says:

poo said,”Chris, I guess if people would rather strive “instead” of trusting/depending on God they can. It just seems so futile and unproductive to me.”

“All we have to do trust in Him, His care, put it on and stand.”

is not putting on, walking, and doing good works striving?
how can we do any of this without instruction? sure there are times when God says wait and others do. His instructions are well known to His children. maybe we need to see God’s Word as armor and a double edge sword. He really makes it interesting! not fun when the sword cuts the other way….hehe. He is Faithful!

  77. poohpity says:

No street it is not striving if it is striving then would it not be doing it in your own strength. It is not hard to put spiritual armor on, the heavy part was done for us through Jesus Christ. Even our faith is a gift from Him. Doing good works is a natural result of our relationship with God from the fruit of His Spirit. Our part is to stay close to Him and it is hard when we are bent on rebelling and doing things our way, in our strength, in our timing. You can not rest if you think the things you do will gain favor with God. We have His favor, mercy and grace we do not have to earn it or it would not be grace.

  78. poohpity says:

If we strive who gets the atta boys/girls we do but when we realize that everything that has to do with God comes from God then it is Him who gets all the Praise and Glory. Jesus is “sitting” at the right hand of God the work was done His mission was accomplished. It is about right believing.

We have plenty of instruction 66 books worth. They all tell about how much we are loved by God and the Holy Spirit who lives in us and gives us direction and instruction.

Chris, I listen to DTW every morning along with ODB and going Chronologically through the Bible for my morning devotions. I really enjoy DTW. It does not take much effort to do something we love to do.

  79. street says:

    Hebrews 12:4

  80. street says:

sorry the esv doesn’t use the word striving.

the new american standard does, Hebrews 12:3,4,5

3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary [a]and lose heart.
4 You have not yet resisted [b]to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; 5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,

“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
    Nor faint when you are reproved by Him;

COOL we are sons of God……WOW!!!

  81. oneg2dblu says:

Then we have the faith story of Noah’s Arc in God’s word for a reason.
So, was it by untested faith alone that Noah built the arc?

By faithfully folding his hands and saying let God build it so no one would dare say that Noah built it and possibly give him any glory?

Or did he know that he must not only have faith, but also obey God and get his hands involved?

He must build it in the manner and proportion given, and by the sweat of his brow and many years of toil did his faith become both tested and showing us all a rather telling result?

He actually was proving this premise, that faith without deeds is dead, and that his faith was alive because he trusted God and believed also in the working out of his trusting faith.

The rest of the unbelieving and unfaithful world thought he was crazy and worthlessly wasting his life away in toil, thinking they were doing life right.

  82. joycemb says:

We do need to beware of what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace”.

  83. jeff1 says:

We have to remember that God is saving the World from Satan that is why it will not always be clear to us as individuals. We see from our perspective but God is saving the perishing, which requires us to be faithful for it will not always seem like God is for us but his plan is for the World and as followers we must be willing to do whatever God requires of us to help non believers, for his desire is for non to perish. We know we are saved by what Christ done on the cross but unbelievers do not and in a World where science has taken over God will use whatever is fit for purpose which means what ever means available to him to fulfil his purpose. My desire is not to get in the way of God’s purpose for our individually i.e. culture, religious beliefs, personalties can do just that. God knows this we can be a hindrance to him as much as a helper. For this reason God is telling us even if I allow you to be slain trust me. Faith in my mind is not about seeing the bigger picture but trusting God because of Christ’s sacrifice with the bigger picture.
Being in Christ means sacrificing, allowing God to put us in whatever circumstance he sees fit to save an unbelieving World.

  84. remarutho says:

    Good Morning BTA Friends —

In thinking and praying about Philae this week, have considered the fact that the little island (of which the space probe is namesake) was home to many religious temples in ancient times. It was sacred to Isis, still worshiped by pagans. The small sliver of land was submerged when the Nile was dammed at Aswan. Now, the tiny science/photo lab, Philae, clings to the surface of a comet 310 million miles from earth. Scientific experiment has accomplished much in just getting the little robot where it is.

Yet, as some of us have pointed out here, scientific research and exploration cannot give the information we get any particular meaning. What makes life meaningful is our relationships with family, friends, community and above all with our Creator God. A hundred years ago, it was said that “science is the handmaiden of religion.” This is still true, it seems to me. Truth is not perceived by increasing knowledge. Truth is perceived by faith. Faith comes by what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:17)

Philae has come to be something like R2D2 in my heart these days of her deployment. Fell in love with “Artoo” the first time I saw Star Wars. I am rejoicing over here at the boldness of the team that is working to supply more information about the exact composition of comets and the origins of the universe. Praying we will all see the face of God in Jesus.

    Blessings all day,
    Maru

Good day all… I was just reading in 1 Corinthians 15:58 (NIV) ” So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.”
While one tiny island sleeps, just as the soul of each man is in itself an island unto himself, until each is awakened by a greater power.
Is not all our work for the Lord used by Him to awaken others?
Who directs the path of all things, who gives all authority other than He who holds the Keys to Hades, and He being the holder and deciding the destination of each Soul.
    To Him do we toil.

After waiting for 10 years for Philae to touch down on the comet and put Rosetta into orbit around it they got 50 hours of information about the makeup of the dusty popsicle because of darkness. I wonder how many believers live their Christian lives in darkness listening for instruction from God but hears the adversary which puts them in a state of nonproductive or fruitless lives? Is what one is hearing truly from God?

In an article “Call To Me” it gives some guidelines to discern the distinctive differences in whether we are listening to the condemnation/darkness of Satan or the conviction/light of the Holy Spirit. It says what we may think of as God talking to us because of misunderstanding and distorted views of His character we can be lead astray.

    Here are some of the questions we can ask ourselves to discern;
    1. Is it consistent with scripture?
    2. Is it consistent with the character of God?
    3. Does it lead to change or growth in your life?
    4. Does it lead to the restoration of relationships?
    5. Is there a sense of healing; release from past sin or pain?
    6. Is there a sense of peace, a lessening of anxiety, of contentment where once there was striving?
    7. Does it lead to conviction instead of guilt?

    It goes on to say that sometimes we think it is God but what Satan tells us fits so well with our distortions and misunderstanding of how we think God feels about us like;
    1. Accusing, nagging, and mocking. Generates fear and causes confusion.
    2. Generates an overall sense of guilt, as if everything is wrong. Creates feelings of hopelessness and weakness.
    3. Discouraging attacks that makes you think you are worthless.
    4. Brings up the past by replaying poor choices, sin and shame.
    5. Produces feelings of rejection that God is angry and punitive.
    6. Pushes you to isolate and withdraw from others.
    7. Looks at the negative and the horrible way you feel as the way it is.

    Those are just a few ways darkness can consume us. The Good News is when the light shines we hear;
    1. TONE: Gentle, loving, imploring and urges your return to God.
    2. SPECIFIC: tells you a specific action in response to sin; freedom follows.
    3. RELEASES YOU FROM PAST: tells you your sins are forgiven, never to be held against you.
    4. ATTRACTS: generates an expectation of kindness, love, and a new beginning with His help
    5. DRAWS INTO FELLOWSHIP: sends others to minister to you in love, as well as sends you to others. Speaks of His unchanging nature and steadfast love.
    6. TRUTHFUL: states the facts about you and God.

The Light shows how God has pursed us to have a loving relationship with Him and with others. He is our refuge from fear and anxiety, our strength when we are weak and broken, He is always near and is calling “Come with Me” I will give you rest, freedom and a love far beyond our understanding through His totally awesome grace.

Father awaken our hearts to love you and others let us not be found sleeping in the darkness of old thinking but in the newness of our born again life with/in you.

    Great list of questions, Pooh!

Plus, guides to hearing the Truth: God loves us just the way we are — and loves us so much He will not leave us as is, but draws us nearer and nearer to His kingdom, urging us to bring everybody we meet along too.

    Thanks.

What you say is true Pooh about listening to Satan and feeling condemned, got the t-shirt as they say. Religions play a big part in causing this confusion because of different teachings and many have fallen foul to these preachers. I do not believe however that God holds those responsible when they have been lead astray by listening to those who should have known better. You may be much better than someone else in discerning a false preacher because of your knowledge of the bible. I have very little knowledge of the bible I was brought up to keep my faith simple and focus on what Christ did on the Cross. Many I know are now turning away from organised religions because of wrong teachings. I myself would not study the bible because all I have heard in my lifetime is everyone coming to their own interpretation which caused more division than bringing together. You are right too about how different Christians see God for many I know say God is a God of Wrath. These Christians do believe however that being punished is good for them because it disciplines them. Only God knows the reason, Job did not know at the time the reason God allowed Satan to take all from him. I like the fact that if I go wrong God does discipline it means he is directing my pathway and I am not directing my own.

  89. poohpity says:

Jesus took the punishment however like a parent who loves His children correction is way different. As a parent I know fully well the difference and it is huge. Correction helps in growth but punishment causes fear, shame, guilt and oppression.

I guess I feel so much different about the Bible because I read and studied it first and use it as a foundation to compare what is taught by preachers/authors/speakers. If deception were easy to spot then it would not be deception. There is so much more as we grow in our relationship with Christ and it is a tool to grow in the knowledge of the One we love. What better way to learn than His inspired Word with the teaching of the Holy Spirit who guides us into all truth. With the Bible there is a constant revelation the more one reads the more one sees, hears and experiences God.

What one is listening to that stops one from reading certainly is not from God. Most the wayward interpretations are from those who do not know the Word or His Word. They say they have read it but normally that is not true. They are one of the easiest things to spot. The scriptures are what Jesus used to teach about Himself from the beginning. So sad many miss out.

  90. jeff1 says:

I do not see God disciplining me as punishment though that is what I would deserve I see it as correcting me as I walk with him. My walk is different to yours as I do not have the knowledge and have gone astray by listening to wrong teachers.
I believe God understands this and is protecting me from further error. God is drawing me to him away from the false teachers. My head may not always be in a good place but I know this in my heart.

  91. poohpity says:

The bible to me is not to gain knowledge for knowledge sake it is because I love God so much I want to find out everything I can about Him beyond the black/red of the print to the white, His heart. When I love someone I want to find out all I can about them what they like, how they think, their hopes and dreams, their heart that to me is real intimacy. I think that is the type of relationship God wants with all of us. Although we are all different we worship the same God who does not change.

My mind is not always in a good place either I have several struggles, trials, sufferings, hardships, griefs but I have an intimate relationship with God no matter what happens. There are times when I have doubts and all matter of other things but God never lets me go. That type of relationship to God is available to everyone who wants it.

  92. poohpity says:

Some people have problems with reading but there are all kinds of ways to listen as others read it. I have a friend who listens to the Bible being read on the computer because He is blind, some have dyslexia or other special reading problems.
