Is God Like the Weather?

IMG_0052_SnapseedDoes our Creator change like the wind?

The Scriptures describe the One who has made us as being loving, merciful, and compassionate. But then they speak of him as being like a consuming fire, into whose hands we don’t want to fall.

Even Jesus might leave us wondering if he speaks with the ever changing wind, weather, or circumstance.  He says he has not come to judge the world but to rescue it. He tells religious leaders he is not going to accuse them to his father, but rather that they will be accused by Moses in whom they trust. Yet it is Jesus who in the next breath speaks of those who don’t believe in him as being condemned and standing under the wrath of God.

If Jesus has come to reveal the heart of his Father, then the answer must lie not just with what he says… but in what he does, and in how he acts… before he’s done.

Words, even words that Jesus spoke, can leave us wondering what he meant by his upside-down and inside-out kingdom. But what did he do that leaves us afraid to come to him…

In the end, what did Jesus do that causes us to doubt that even the anger of his Father will turn out to be an expression of his love?

The short answer Mart is that God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

It is written that Cherubs encircle the thrown of God and for eternity see the never ending facets of Him.

It may be what we perceive as changes are just the different faces of God.

Christianity is based in the cross and Jesus being the scape goat for all of humanity. God showed His love, by taking the punishment mankind deserved upon Himself.

Perhaps He feels responsible for having created us with all of our flaws and so flawless Himself the only being in all of creation worthy to be blamed, charged and sacrificed, just to save us from eternal separation from Him.

What did Jesus do? He came to set the captives free. Luke 4:17-19 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Luke 4:21 and He said to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Freedom for the prisoners, release for the oppressed. Those who sin, and that is every single one of us who has ever been born on this earth, are enslaved by sin. Jesus came to save us from our sin. How did He do it?

Phil 2:5-8…Christ Jesus, who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing,

Taking on the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness, and being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,

That at the name of Jesus EVERY knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and UNDER the earth, and EVERY tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. (if you confess with your mouth…you will be saved Romans 10:9)

Those who do not understand these words, or scoff at these words, are lost. And Jesus came to seek and to SAVE what was lost. Those who are lost may not see it now, and they don’t understand, but I believe that with God all things are possible and He has made a way for those who are lost.

I, for one, do not doubt that even the anger of His Father will turn out to be an expression of His love.

Is God like the weather? I think the weather is like God. Everything that God created points back to Him. The weather is powerful, yet calm and we cannot see where it comes from or where it goes.

    Good Morning All —

God’s people have always made comparisons to the weather when speaking of God’s presence:

“Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God. They took their stand at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke, because the Lord had descended upon it in fire; the smoke went up like the smoke of a kiln, while the whole mountain shook violently. As the blast of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses would speak and God would answer him in thunder. ”

So strong is the comparison, insurance companies call weather damage “an act of God.”

    The afternoon of Jesus’s death:

“…Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. After his resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many. Now when the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were terrified and said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son!'”

When God acts, the atmosphere of earth is disturbed — at Sinai and at Golgotha in Jerusalem, according to Scripture.

  5. jeff1 says:

I don’t believe so, I am like the weather so easily taken of course. God does not change, people change God, each one of us has our own perception of God depending on many different aspects of our lives. God never ask us to focus on him, he ask us to focus on Christ, God had good reason to ask us to focus on Christ and the Cross. The reason being Christ is the first and the last, the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. The world has not changed either in that whether we are born in Jesus’s day or present day there are those who strongly oppose the teachings of Christ. When we get this we get why life has difficulties in it and we accept them without asking why all the time.

We say we trust God but show no trust at all by continually asking him Why this and Why that? Does that make us any better than God’s enemies as at least God knows where he stands with them.

    Teach Us to Live

    God of love-Forgive! Forgive!
Teach us show to truly live,
Ask us not our race or creed,
Just take us in our hour of need,
And let us know You love us, too,
And that we are a part of You…
    And someday may man realize
That all the earth, the seas and skies
Belong to God who made us all,
The rich, the poor, the great, the small,
And in the Father’s Holy Sight
No man is yellow, black or white,
And peace on earth cannot be found
Until we meet on common ground
And every man becomes a brother
Who worships God and loves each other.

  6. foreverblessed says:

This afternoon this verse came to me Isa 51:16
But immediately God gave the previous verse also v15:
For I am the Lord your God,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
the Lord Almighty is his name.

When God stirs up the sea then He does it to make things loosened, like breaking up the hard ground so it is receptive to accept the seed of His Word, the seed of faith in Jesus.
When God is a consuming fire, He is not like that in order to destroy us, no He is like that to save us from all things that distort us, He consumes wrong things with His Fire, the Fire of the Holy Spirit.

I really like the Utmost for His Highest of today, March 2, that Jesus’ probing questions is not to show how wrong we are, but to come to our deepest inmost parts, where Peter saw that He really loved Jesus. Without these questions, like a piercing sword, not to harm us but to free us. The truth will set you free.

So God’s consuming fire is the same as Jesus’ questioning of Peter, to make us whole.

  7. foreverblessed says:

I wanted to write:Without these piercing gquestions, Peter would not have known how much he really loved Jesus. citing Oswald Chambers:
“Peter was beginning to discover within himself just how much he really did love the Lord. He discovered that his eyes were so fixed on Jesus Christ that he saw no one else in heaven above or on the earth below. But he did not know it until the probing, hurting questions of the Lord were asked. The Lord’s questions always reveal the true me to myself.”

  8. poohpity says:

It seems the religious leaders were accused by Moses with the inability to please God with/in self effort so they lived in the fear of not pleasing Him and having to earn God’s love. What Jesus did was to provide the WAY that was determined from the beginning of time with God never changing His plan of restoration of a broken relationship between man and God so we would no longer run and hide from Him but run to Him which seems to be what God always wanted (never changing).

What Jesus did was to bring us adoption into His family not in anyway detracting from the just anger of God but satisfying it. The consuming fire of His love burns off the wrong beliefs while the life of Jesus the things he did and the actions He took were an example of exactly what God has wanted with His children, fellowship.

  9. foreverblessed says:

    Tracey thanks for Phil 2:5-8,9-11
I have been looking for these verses for a long time, that: “every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,”
Under the earth too! Under? the earth. What is there so important that it needs to be mentioned?
But eventually all knee will bow, and all tongue will confess. As you say: with God everything is possible. He will make a way.

  10. poohpity says:

I can not recall anything that Jesus said or did that would cause anyone to be afraid of Him.

  11. poohpity says:

In awe, wonder and reverence yes but afraid, no.

  12. street says:

poo i remembering Jesus cursing a fig tree.

  13. street says:

i also remember Jesus chasing k-mart out of His Fathers temple.

do you remember when Jesus walked away from a group of people that were looking for him? He walked away from the people who sat in the seat of moses too.

i post these chilling comments knowing that He promised to never leave me nor forsake me.

    1 Samuel 15:29

  14. poohpity says:

street did the deal with the fig tree or temple tables cause anyone to be afraid of Him? I do not know anything about walking away from the people who sat in the seat of Moses.

I have just never believed that God wanted anyone to come to Him out of fear. I have noticed in the time of Moses that he(Moses) did fear for the people and God’s reaction to their constant rebellion, complaining and grumbling but always plead on their behalf for mercy. I wonder if God would have let the behavior continue how many more people would be lead away from the safety of the Lord’s care?

  15. joycemb says:

Mart said :Words, even words that Jesus spoke, can leave us wondering what he meant by his upside-down and inside-out kingdom. But what did he do that leaves us afraid to come to him…

A friend talks about how when someone in his family did something wrong the prelude to being punished was called a “come to Jesus meeting” . Fear and expectation of punishment clouded the real meaning of coming to Jesus for grace, mercy, and forgiveness. I thought that was so sad, but I wonder how many others feel the same way? Family can really distort the “Good News” sometimes. Perhaps that’s the enemies ploy? Probably.

  16. cas139 says:

I’ve been thinking about that question, “But what did he (Jesus) do that leaves us afraid to come to him…” The question seems to me to be one, not so much of fear of Jesus, but fear of following Jesus.

My personal answer has to do with my fear of loss of self. It’s my human pridefulness that makes me hesitate in making that full commitment that Jesus showed us by example and asked of us. He showed us by his complete surrender to his Father’s will. He told us that to be his disciples, to follow him, we, too, are expected to surrender our will in favor of God’s will. It is stated in Matthew 16:24-25. I must ask am I truly willing to lose my life (or my self) for Jesus’s sake. When I’m completely honest with myself, that is something of a frightening proposition. Am I willing to lose my life to save it?

  17. street says:

Deuteronomy 32:39 ‘See now that I, I am He,
    And there is no god besides Me;
It is I who put to death and give life.
I have wounded and it is I who heal,
And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.’

  18. street says:

dear cas i think you are on the right track. we have to look at what we are faced with logically. the other part of the equation is the heart. our passions and desires. they seem to have a twisted sense to override our our thoughts. what we believe to be true will have the most profound effect on our minds and heart. God is perfectly aware of our condition. He made us in His image. He goes so far to give His children His Holy Spirit to accomplish His will in us. we still have free will, but we need to recognize God has free will too. that is where it really gets to be extraordinarily wonderfully inside out and upside down to borrow a phase. i am beginning to believe God develops virtue courage passion love and the fruit of the Spirit through the entire gambit of human experience. yes it is fearful when sin tries to circumvent the works of God. we must master it in Christ Jesus. He did put an end to it at the cross. we need to take up our cross, because in doing so we honor our Lord and Savior, whom the Father has sent. to deny Jesus is to deny the very person of God and destroy the glory of man. to think judgment and wrath are not real would be a epic mistake.

  19. street says:

poo i think people come to Jesus out of need.
life just does not work without God, Jesus was sent so we could have abundant life! remember the law was a tuter it could not save and it did not give life. we tend to confuse life with tangibles and this is not the case at all. like following the law. doesn’t work”.” faith dose work! hard work real work. Jesus even said it was work!

John 6: 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

  20. street says:

what did Jesus do that makes us afraid? He died a brutal death on a cross and many followers did too.

the hard part is seeing past the brutality and seeing steadfast love and trust in His Father.

this makes me consider the cost.

  21. joycemb says:

When you start with nothing you have nothing to lose. Even though for many years I had a hard time trusting God (out of fear because He is so brutal sometimes) I could always trust Christ BECAUSE of his suffering. And because He loves God so much that He willingly suffered/died I trusted that it would all work out somehow; in spite of my limitations and inability to understand. That devotion and trust has paid off even though countless times He has offered me another direction than the one I might want or that seems right to me. I often see Christ in the Spirit standing at a crossroad waiting for me to follow or not. I follow because He knows the way through this life to the next. Sometimes I groan but I still follow.

  22. joycemb says:

Love bade me welcome. Yet my soul drew back

    Guilty of dust and sin.

But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack

    From my first entrance in,

Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning,

    If I lacked any thing.

A guest, I answered, worthy to be here:

Love said, You shall be he.

I the unkind, ungrateful? Ah my dear,

    I cannot look on thee.

Love took my hand, and smiling did reply,

Who made the eyes but I?

Truth Lord, but I have marred them: let my shame

    Go where it doth deserve.

And know you not, says Love, who bore the blame?

My dear, then I will serve.

You must sit down, says Love, and taste my meat:

So I did sit and eat.

  23. SFDBWV says:

    “Is God like the weather?”
Unpredictable, even though vast sums of money and energy are spent trying to, the only accuracy is in observation.

    “Is God like the weather?”
    Life giving, and life taking.

    “Is God like the weather?”
As soothing as gentle rain on the roof, and as destructive as a raging flood.

    “Is God like the weather?”
No other subject is as discussed in both gratitude and in complaint.

Come to think of it; yes, at least the subject of the weather is likened to the subject of God.

We still have nearly a foot of snow on the ground here at 21 degrees this morning, and as is often said, “today is a day the Lord has made, I will be glad in it.”

  24. remarutho says:

Good Morning Mart & Friends —

    One night, Jesus told Nicodemus:

“Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’”

    Jesus continued:

“The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

(The word Jesus used for “spirit” and for “wind” is the same word.)

Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?”

God does not change, but God changes things, people and circumstances. The blessed Holy Spirit can change anything and everything — even the human heart –when it is birthed into the Kingdom of God.

    Joy all day!

  26. SFDBWV says:

Good morning Maru and thank you for your prayers and concern.

Just read in the paper this morning that the North East had one of its coldest season on record in contrast to the rest of the world.

Actually West Virginia is considered the Mid-Atlantic region and my particular area has more in common with Western Pennsylvania, but we seem to always share in the North East’s reported bad weather.

I remember the winters of 76 and 77 as being much colder and many years with more snow, but then we didn’t have a “Weather Channel” back in those days to make the weather news sound all that “new”.

They predicted sleet and freezing rain this morning which thankfully didn’t happen and temps to rise up to 40 today and tomorrow with rain. Unbelievably it is supposed to be -4 Thursday night.

Remembering the old saying of March, “in like a lion out like a lamb” reminds me once again of our subject and how reference to the weather can also be applied to God as in a Lion and a Lamb.

Oh my just can’t get away from it.

    Steve

  27. jeff1 says:

What did Jesus do to cause us to doubt that the anger of his father would turn out to be an expression of his love.

It is more about what God did and the brutality of what Jesus had to suffer, because we don’t get it as we could not let a child of ours die to save another.

I said before God always points us to Christ and that is his reason God does not take the credit he gives it to the one who suffered for us.

How God’s heart must have broken knowing what had to be done to make us whole again and then we keep asking the most trivial questions that must add insult to injury when despite the fact that we know as followers we will have difficulties as Christ did, we his so called followers, have the same doubts Peter had. Peter believed Jesus was going to bring them to victory through battle until Christ rebuked him, man like Peter believe victory comes from fighting and history tells us that is not so.

It takes us a life time to learn this simple truth and many will never realise it because it is goes against our human logic.

The message of the Gospel has and always will be about God’s love for us not our love for God for we have no understanding of God’s love, man’s love can only scratch the surface of God’s love.

    Where There Is Love

    Where there is love
    the heart is light,
    Where there is love
    the day is bright,
    Where there is love
    there is a song
    To help when things
    are going wrong,
    Where there is love
    there is a smile
    To make all things
    seem more worthwhile,
    Where there is love
    there’s quiet peace,
    A tranquil place
    where turmoil’s cease-
    Love changes darkness into light
    And makes the heart
    take “wingless flight”
    Oh, blest are they
    who walk in love,
    They also walk
    with God above-
    And when man walks
    with God again,
    There shall be peace
    on earth for men.

  28. remarutho says:

    Mart, you ask:

“In the end, what did Jesus do that causes us to doubt that even the anger of his Father will turn out to be an expression of his love?”

After sitting with the topic “Does our Creator change like the wind?” the past couple days, I am centering in on Jesus Christ, as all here probably do. The wonder and glory of Jesus is that he appeared with all the attributes of God in a fleshly form — a body like ours.

What Jesus did/does/will do, if we look carefully at what the Bible tells us, does not bring us to doubt, but rather to faith in him as the only begotten Son of God. His words do not contradict his obedience and faith in his heavenly Father.

  29. fadingman says:

God is not fickle, but neither is the weather. When the weather changes, there’s a reason for it. The weather obeys natural laws. Only our experience of weather seems random.

Likewise, God doesn’t change, but our experience of Him does. It depends on various reasons, internal or external to us. But for us, no matter what our experience, it all works out for the good.

  30. poohpity says:

It seems all things about God have to be discovered to be really understood no matter what anyone else says. The deeper the relationship the clearer His character becomes and the things taught in the Bible no matter how much someone teaches they are just words until……… We can say over and over that God does not change but unless someone is open to experiencing Him in their life no one will understand or believe that to be true.

No one knows that submission is not losing ourselves but losing the things that prevent us from being ourselves. Submission to letting go of actions and behaviors that hold us down causing harm to our relationship with God, ourselves and with others while trusting God through it all because He is worth depending on and trusting in. If we could not be sure that he does not change our relationship would not be very secure at all. Blessed assurance.

  31. SFDBWV says:

Over the many years I have been a reader and participant of BTA Mart has often raised the issue of what he calls tensions in the Bible.

Here in this topic once again we see the same underlying questions of what is being expressed. Is it punishment or is it forgiveness? Is it clear or cloudy?

Jesus says one thing and then another sounding like they don’t mesh or agree.

Certainly when reading the different passages you have to look at to whom Jesus is speaking to and whether one is threatened or one is given a blanket forgiveness regardless of the offence.

Of one thing I am certain, for a couple thousand years people have tried to figure it all out and it would seem that the only ones who have peace about these things are those who are like little children and just believe that they are safe with Jesus and that enough to know.

Amazing to me that there among the scribes and experts of the Jewish religion were division on the most base of belief. Whether there is a conscious existence after death or not.

Every civilization has believed in a spirit afterlife. Why do you suppose that is? Is it because of the undeniable evidence people has experienced or an instinctive desire to live on?

Jesus explained that we live on after death and where we end up depends on our life here in this world. His example was a warning to be better people towards others. His gift that through Him we could all live on in a place of eternal happiness.

Is that what life is about? Being happy?

If we live to please God is it so that we can expect to end up eternally happy, rather than eternally tormented?

It is rather sad to think that this is all life is about.

But there is another “thing” called “love”. Love overlooks a great many flaws and fills a gap in all of our beings so that if there is only one thing we can hold onto for eternity it is “love”.

No one can ever take it from you it is with you forever and it is that same love that God has for us that will save us and comfort us and care for us…forever.

Rain today, snow tomorrow, it must be March.

Agreeing with you over here, Steve. Jesus is the real, physical, empirical evidence of God’s Love.

Today is a special day, speaking of March. It is a date, but it is also a joyful command: March 4th! God is good. :o)

No matter what you’re guilty of-
For God forgives until the end,
He is your faithful, loyal friend,
And though you try to hide your face
There is no shelter any place,
That can escape His watchful eye,
For on the earth and in the sky
He’s ever present and always there
To take you in His tender care
And bind the wounds and mend the breaks
When all the world around forsakes….
Somebody cares and loves you still
And God is the Someone who always will.

    Good day all…
Yes Steve, the tension exists whether we participate here or not, whether we read the bible or not, whether we attend church or not, and for many today even whether we obey or not.
It is all part of God’s Design, that His Word would be about creating this tension for a reason, we can never explain away without our using one word, Love.
That is the “Real WHETHER,” we should be defining in our relationship with the Lord.
It seems as though the weather is as fickle as the tongue of man, for who can control it other than God?
Good place for me to leave, and leave God’s Wrath out of the picture, because it sounds not so loving for some.
Tension, tension, all part of God’s Plan.

    People everywhere in life
    from every walk and station,
    From every town and city
    and every state and nation
Have given me so many things
    intangible and dear,
I couldn’t begin to count them all
    or even make them clear…
I only know I owe so much
    to people everywhere
And when I put my thoughts in verse
it’s just a way to share
The musings of a thankful heart,
a heart much like your own,
For nothing that I think or write
    is mine and mine alone…
So if you found some beauty
    in any word or line,
    It’s just “Your Soul’s Reflection

Maru are you hinting that today is your birthday? If so happy birthday if not then happy non-birthday…

Gary speaking of being on the “space coast” of Florida reminded me of two interesting space news items I have read recently. One being plumes of an unknown origin in the atmosphere of Mars and the other being bright lights coming from a crater on the outer dwarf planet Ceres well past Pluto.

As we probe into the great abyss of outer space we really know very little about it and as evidenced in what we observe very little we know about our own little solar system.

Imagine as we probe into knowing about God the Creator of all things how little we know and how much we don’t.

Sorry Gary I wouldn’t trade any of the insects you have in Florida for any of your good winter weather. I’ll take the weather here and not complain, just shovel, plow and salt the walks.

Vivian what is the weather there in the “Misty Isles”?

Rereading Marts post again what I come up with this morning is a simplified rendering, wrath plus justice equals love. Yes the Gospel is surely upside down and inside-out according to mankinds’ thinking. When we try to decifer the equation on our own terms of course it makes no sense. Thank God for the Holy Spirit we have been given to understand such upside-down thinking!

Does our Creator change like the wind? It does not seem like it but people do. They say they believe but seem to make no effort to know the little we are given to know by making the excuse the we will never know God however what an awesome experience or journey to seek Him throughout our lifetime.

Is God like the weather no He is my King!!

    My King

The Bible says my King is the King of the Jews. He’s the King of Israel. He’s the King of Righteousness. He’s the King of the Ages. He’s the King of Heaven. He’s the King of Glory. He’s the King of kings, and He’s the Lord of lords. That’s my King.

I wonder, do you know Him?

My King is a sovereign King. No means of measure can define His limitless love. He’s enduringly strong. He’s entirely sincere. He’s eternally steadfast. He’s immortally graceful. He’s imperially powerful. He’s impartially merciful.

    Do you know Him?

He’s the greatest phenomenon that has ever crossed the horizon of this world. He’s God’s Son. He’s the sinner’s Saviour. He’s the centrepiece of civilization. He’s unparalleled. He’s unprecedented. He is the loftiest idea in literature. He’s the highest personality in philosophy. He’s the fundamental doctrine of true theology. He’s the only one qualified to be an all sufficient Saviour.

I wonder if you know Him today?

He supplies strength for the weak. He’s available for the tempted and the tried. He sympathizes and He saves. He strengthens and sustains. He guards and He guides. He heals the sick. He cleansed the lepers. He forgives sinners. He discharges debtors. He delivers the captive. He defends the feeble. He blesses the young. He serves the unfortunate. He regards the aged. He rewards the diligent. And He beautifies the meek.

I wonder if you know Him?

He’s the key to knowledge. He’s the wellspring of wisdom. He’s the doorway of deliverance. He’s the pathway of peace. He’s the roadway of righteousness. He’s the highway of holiness. He’s the gateway of glory.

    Do you know Him? Well…

His life is matchless. His goodness is limitless. His mercy is everlasting. His love never changes. His Word is enough. His grace is sufficient. His reign is righteous. And His yoke is easy. And His burden is light.

I wish I could describe Him to you. Yes…

He’s indescribable! He’s incomprehensible. He’s invincible. He’s irresistible. You can’t get Him out of your mind. You can’t get Him off of your hand. You can’t outlive Him, and you can’t live without Him. Well, the Pharisees couldn’t stand Him, but they found out they couldn’t stop Him. Pilate couldn’t find any fault in Him. Herod couldn’t kill Him. Death couldn’t handle Him, and the grave couldn’t hold Him.

Yeah! That’s my King, that’s my King.

    Amen!

Is He like the weather no He created it!

steve said,”Here in this topic once again we see the same underlying questions of what is being expressed. Is it punishment or is it forgiveness? Is it clear or cloudy?”

looks muddy to me from here. let me explain. punishment implies repayment for a wrong committed. forgiveness is given where an act of wrong was committed.

pain and suffering come to mind in both. here’s why? punishment self explanatory, forgiveness given side steps the punishment phase. huston we still have a problem?

with transgression there is a victim of innocence. they suffer the transgression. we have not even addressed the issue of healing or/and restitution.

there is no question in my mind that God uses tension to reveal Himself and produce fruit in us that conforms us to the image of His Son. yes the cross is God’s answer to transgression and suffering, but don’t stop there. Easter is three days later or even today!
if you hear His voice, harden not your heart.

  41. street says:

steve said,”Is that what life is about? Being happy?

If we live to please God is it so that we can expect to end up eternally happy, rather than eternally tormented?

It is rather sad to think that this is all life is about.”

this is the argument the devil uses in the garden against adam and eve. you can not be your self unless you are apart from God. separated so to speak. it plays to the music of self righteousness and we know it does not work. you can’t even dance or live to it, many have tried. it is sad to even witness such displays on the nation news every night. look at the faithful ones who came before us. have they been forgotten? even job still speaks!!! God made sure of that! and God still speaks! those who tried to live apart from God are silenced in great darkness. even abel still speaks, but not as well as the blood of Christ. listen for the voice of Him. Steve here in Ulster we have very mixed weather,a bit of sunshine, some snow and hail but nothing too severe thank goodness. We get a lot of rain, they say it is God’s tears for our wayward country.

    On the subject of happiness!

If I believed that God wanted to torment people for eternity then I would not believe He existed.

As a clergyman once told me if he really believed a Powerful God would leave us in torment for eternity he would take off his robes and choose another profession.

For most of my young life I tried to earn my way out of hell.
I ended up hating myself for not being able to live up to the standards set by false teachers and myself.

I don’t believe I am wrong in believing God will end hell and yes it does exist but a loving God would not leave any of us in torment or he would not be a loving God.

Do you really think it matters to God if we get it right or wrong, he would be a pretty Powerless God if he depended on the human race to understand his plan.

I can tell you now from someone who knew how to hate and still battles it, it is a fine line between the two.
It is only God that knows the good from the bad from the ugly.

jeff said,”As a clergyman once told me if he really believed a Powerful God would leave us in torment for eternity he would take off his robes and choose another profession.”

jeremiah had problems with people speaking for God and they were not. since we saw what happen through history and the Scriptures we know such people are real and jeremiah was correct in what He said. then again what the clergyman believed did not have any bearing and God’s Word in removing a jot or tittle.

  46. street says:

i don’t think it’s a question of a loving God sending people to hell. it’s more of loving God saving people from hell. the hard part is grappling with the free will of God. He is free to do what He wishes in keeping with His Holiness. the real problem is the finite trying to comprehend the infinite. i resolve this by trying to explain myself to a worm. it can not be done. i am a man. God can explain Himself to man. He is not limited. man is.

  47. poohpity says:

Isn’t hell eternal separation from God? God does not seem to want anyone separated from Him that is why a way was made. People make the choice to run to God or anyway from Him.

  48. joycemb says:

Street although we do have a glimpse into the heart of God; Jesus. Perhaps if you made a worm with human attributes the other worms would gain some understanding? All silly thoughts though as worms/animals/vegetation are created also but without souls.
God is still mostly understood though, isn’t He. I’m rambling…

  49. joycemb says:

I meant to say God is mostly MISunderstood.

  50. street says:

jeff,”Do you really think it matters to God if we get it right or wrong, he would be a pretty Powerless God if he depended on the human race to understand his plan.”

yes it does matter to God because His goals matter and He loves His children. He loves them so much He tries, test, and disciplines them. i am not saying it is fun. He is a perfect Dad. His loved ones will be conformed to the image of His Son. i can not speak as to why their is suffering or pain in an individuals life. i think we need to be careful when it appears in our own life. if we get it wrong it will make things worse i think. it all goes back to who are you listening to. He gave us Jesus to secure our salvation and He gave us the Holy Spirit to take His place after He returned to His Father. He has withheld nothing from us. we are maturing and the process still unfolds before our eyes. i know, i wait too.

  51. remarutho says:

    Good Evening All —

    Mart, you ask:
“In the end, what did Jesus do that causes us to doubt that even the anger of his Father will turn out to be an expression of his love?”

Jesus’ supreme act was to face unjust judgment and accept a death he knew would defeat death once for all because the outcome was resurrection to eternal life. He did so many miraculous things the Gospel writer John said finally:

“But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.”

It seems to me, Mart, Jesus never did anything that would cause us to doubt that God’s anger is an expression of His love. Even the old cycle of Israel’s unfaithfulness and idol-worship was met by God raising up another judge, such as Gideon, who brought the nation back to faith. Again and again God would become angry, punish his wayward children, yet hear the cries of the people and send a judge — then forgive and bless once more.

Jesus did at last what no judge, leader, prophet or king could ever do. He is on the throne and says:
“See, I am making all things new.”

For me, this brings faith and hope — not doubt.

    Good Morning, All

    Tracey said (3-2-15/8:32 am)…

“I, for one, do not doubt that even the anger of His Father will turn out to be an expression of His love.

Is God like the weather? I think the weather is like God. Everything that God created points back to Him. The weather is powerful, yet calm and we cannot see where it comes from or where it goes.”

Your first sentence, shared in my comment, brings to mind what God said to Adam (& Eve) after he ate from the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (Gen. 3:8-24). In verses 14, 16 and 17, God is obviously disappointed by the situation, all three receive a behavior consequence, but only the serpent is cursed (above all other animals). I can sense God’s “fatherly” love in this situation because Adam and Eve are punished, but God made some clothes for them (v. 21–intimate provision), and, after a short meeting with Jesus and the Holy Spirit (v.22), they were sent out of the Garden to live (unknowingly) a life of “toil and trouble.” Wow… much could be said about that Garden. It’s entirely possible that it’s still there, still guarded by angels and the “Tree of Life” by a “flaming sword”. Gen.3:24, “After sending them out, the Lord God stationed mighty cherubim to the east of the Garden of Eden. And he placed a flaming sword that flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”

Will share another thought on your last two sentences later. Have to get dressed for work now…

Clear skies and 24 degrees in Dallas right now.

    Love to all,

    Good Evening, All

Tracey, the last two sentences of your comment (3-2-15)…

“Is God like the weather? I think the weather is like God. Everything that God created points back to Him. The weather is powerful, yet calm and we cannot see where it comes from or where it goes.”

brought to mind 1 Kings 19:11-12:
    11) “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12) And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.

God wasn’t in any of the *powerful* acts of nature. He was in “the sound of a gentle whisper”. Haven’t read the rest of the comments on this blog topic yet, but I’m looking forward to it. Well, BTA friends, we had another “snow day” in my neck of the woods on Thursday! Could hardly believe that it was snowing/sleeting (between 1:00 and 3:00 am) early Friday morning! I woke up to a blanket of about 4 to 5 inches of (beautiful) snow! Needless to say, many school districts and businesses were closed, and I had yet another unexpected day off (thank God for the day of rest). Gonna read some more comments now, and I hope all is well in your lives.

Clear skies and 37 degrees in Dallas right now.

    Love to all,
    Regina
