Why the Mystery?

P1030018In the death and resurrection of Jesus, we remember and celebrate events that no one but the Messiah, himself, saw coming. Even when Jesus began repeatedly telling his friends that he needed to go to Jerusalem to suffer and die at the hands of religious leaders— before rising the third day (Matt 16:21), it was as if he never told them at all.

What was going on? Why were the crucifixion and resurrection such a surprise when they happened?

P1020963_Snapseed  One answer might be that the disciples     and their religious leaders were people of the Book. They found their identity, their purpose, and their hope in the pages of Moses , the writings, and the prophets. And it was from the first pages of this book that they learned of a son of the woman who would defeat their mortal enemies.

Sometimes the Book seemed to say that God’s answer to their suffering would come in the form of a great anointed Prophet. Sometimes the prophets seemed to promise deliverance through a conquering King, or maybe even a great Priest who would offer the sacrifice of their rescue.

Yet, as it turned out, the answer we now celebrate is one that could only be understood after the fact. Hints of a suffering God were so mysteriously woven into the law, prophets, and writings, that they weren’t  foreseen and believed until after they happened. The rescue came in the form of a Messiah and with an answer for the world that neither friend or enemy saw coming.

DSC07419But why? Why for thousands of years was the sacred story told and written like a great mystery— so that before the chosen people of the Book could start telling their story of a resurrected Savior—to the whole world… they would be the ones who would betray their own Savior, Messiah, and God?

Shouldn’t having the words and Book of God been enough to give God’s own people an inside understanding of what he was going to do?

Mart there were a few people who knew of what lay ahead for the Messiah, such as Simeon (Luke 2:25-35 special notice to Luke 2:35), but it was the Holy Spirit who revealed it to him as well as Anna.

I have to believe there were more, but that’s not how this story is told.

We all read of prophesy of coming events, and too many of us make up our own understandings of them. It seems the only way prophesy is ever understood is after the fact, then it is all too clear as we all say “I should have seen that coming.”

I think not fully knowing may keep us on our toes and more prayerful; but learning from the stories of the Bible we can trust that God will have His way and it turns out for the best, even better than any of us hoped for.

A bright beautiful Spring Easter morning, 30 degrees and the daffodils are up about 4 inches. Happy Easter.

Did Simeon really know that the Cross lied ahead for Jesus or that He was the promised Messiah or that Mary’s soul would be pierced by the way her Son would be treated or even pierced that her own Son would die for her sins?

Even the predictions of Isaiah 53 seem mild to what really would take place. God seemed to always forewarn about future events but it was not until it happened that the puzzle came together.

Have a blessed day celebrating the Risen Savior!!:-)

  3. poohpity says:

Even today we do not understand a lot of scripture until we experience it in our lives then it is truth discovered not just taught that makes it come alive with real meaning.

  4. jeff1 says:

It cannot be all that important to God for he understands the finish so everything is under his control even the false prophets and teachers. What seems to be more important to God is our trust in him for when we trust God we are in effect showing faith in him.

Life is easy, when you’re up on the mountain
And you’ve got peace of mind, like you’ve never known.
But things change, when you’re down in the valley.
Don’t lose faith, for you’re never alone.

For the God on the mountain, is the God in the valley.
When things go wrong, He’ll make them right.
And the God of the good times
Is still God in the bad times.
The God of the day is still God in the night.

We talk of faith way up on the mountain
Talk comes so easy when life’s is at its best
Now down in the valleys, of trials and temptations
That’s where your faith, is really put to the test.

For the God on the mountain is God in the valley.
When things go wrong, He’ll make them right.
And the God of the good times
is still God in the bad times.
The God of the day is still God in the night.
The God of the day is still God in the night.

It is our expectations that cause us to doubt God and our expectations cannot be trusted as they are based on human logic. We will always fail God because of this but thankfully it is not dependant on our getting it right but in God getting it right and that is why we celebrate today and wish that all mankind could understand the gospel as it is good news for all if they could but comprehend it.

Good day all, “He is Risen!”

Yes, pooh, nothing teaches us better about the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit, then the actual Indwelling Holy Spirit, and by experience.

However, today many are taught about false manifestations of the spirit, one containing weird and demonstrative, loud, even seemingly uncontrolled behaviors.

That behavior can also be experienced by following well meaning falsely taught cults, as people can can caught up in the powerful influences/seductions of man, but is it of the Holy Spirit’s moving, or the well taught and learned experience of deceived man?

And, what or who decides which is real for us?

For me, if it does not line up with the Divinely Inspired, controlled and orderly, God-given, Word of God, it is probably from another source.

    Happy Easter to All,
    Gary

  6. poohpity says:

Gary, you said, “However, today many are taught about false manifestations of the spirit, one containing weird and demonstrative, loud, even seemingly uncontrolled behaviors.” So true and very common but there is a but we can trust God to sort them out. We can depend on God to guide those who truly seek Him and leave the rest in His capable hands. Trust God! Do you trust God to do His work?

Joyous Easter to All BTA Friends!

    Mart, you ask:

“Shouldn’t having the words and Book of God been enough to give God’s own people an inside understanding of what he was going to do?”

There is a big mystery in this. If we in our time can hold the full Gospel, Old and New Testaments, in our very hands — can we not see what’s coming, given that we are reading it?

The words of God to the prophets ring in my ears: “Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear.” So Moses accused the Israelites of being dull in understanding how God had preserved them in the Sinai.

Things had not changed by the 1st c. AD. We do not seem to be any more insightful in our time of history either. There are too many parallels in the Bible to the “eyes and ears” quote to list. Every prophet warned that nobody was getting the big picture of how God’s will is played out in history.

Can it be that the Holy Spirit must move into the heart and mind of God’s servants in order for them to put the picture together effectively? The Apostle Paul, it seems to me, offers the best solution to our challenge:

“Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end.”

We follow the Lord as Abraham did, by sheer faith.

    Come Lord Jesus!

    Blessings all day!

Gary, you said “For me, if it does not line up with the Divinely Inspired, controlled and orderly, God-given, Word of God, it is probably from another source.” I will have to pray “in the Spirit” about what you meant.

  9. jeff1 says:

To walk by faith is pleasing God for the fruit of the spirit is Love and Peace.

    There is no thinking person
    Who can stand untouched today
And view the world around us
    Slowly drifting to decay
    Without feeling deep within him
    A silent, unnamed dread
    As he contemplates the future
    That lies frighteningly ahead…
For, like watching storm clouds gather
In a dark and threatening sky,
Man knows that there is nothing
    He can formulate or try
That will stop the storm from breaking
In its fury and its force,
Nor can he change or alter
    The storm’s destructive course,
But his anxious fears are lessened
When he calls on God above,
For he knows above the storm clouds
Is the brightness of God’s love…
So as the “clouds of chaos”
    Gather in man’s muddled mind,
And he searches for the answer
    He alone can never find,
    Let us recognize we’re facing
    Problems man has never solved,
And with all our daily efforts
Life grows more and more involved,
But our future will seem brighter
And we’ll meet with less resistance
If we call upon our Father
    And seek Divine Assistance…
    For the spirit can unravel
    Many tangled, knotted threads
That defy the skill and power
Of the world’s best hands and heads,
And our plans for growth and progress,
Of which we all have dreamed,
    Cannot survive materially
    Unless our spirits are redeemed…
And only through a living faith
    Can man achieve this goal,
    For safety and security
    Are born within the soul.

  10. saled says:

If God’s own people HAD had an understanding of what He was going to do, is it possible that a few of them might have tried to make it happen themselves? Would any of them have thought that maybe THEY were the Christ? Think of the possibilities if some of us were to believe that we knew how things were going to turn out and tried to bring those events to pass.

  11. oneg2dblu says:

Pooh… Yes, Of course God has the whole plan in His Hands. Thank God!

But, does that mean that we should raise our children like weeds?

    Of course not!

We have His Word on that.

But, wasn’t it that even that one sin of disobedience in the Garden, meant that all humanity would eventually suffer?

If, that one sin were avoided by listening to God and doing what He said… Imagine if you will, the multitude of blessings that could have come about, right from the start.

Was not God controlling things then?

    Of course He was!

Wouldn’t it be more advisable for us, Followers of Christ, to just follow His well written plan?

But, as you say, God is in control, and that is true, but we should not be out of control, should we?

Should we then act any way we want, whenever we want, for as long as we want?

Just because, He is in control?

    Of course not!

We who have been blessed by having His Word to actually follow, could actually miss out on many blessings as well, if we don’t act accordingly.

I believe that is scriptural, and it was written under God’s control.

    Don’t you?

    Gary

  12. joycemb says:

A poem I wrote a few years ago only possible because of the resurrection.

    Other Worldly Love

I have no glory but thine-
this vessel built and damned to
    destruction; cracked and broken,
    useless, nothingness,
    yet,

    You grew in me, patiently,
minute by minute, hour by hour,
day by day, getting bigger and
brighter till I knew I wanted no one,
    but You.

And mine is a different kind
of glory; other worldly, open, relaxed,
indifferent really to the life I once knew
    because, because, of course,
    because of You.

    Enraptured, undeceived, smitten by
Your love. Ah Joy! Ah Joy of Joys
to be found in You, You in me too.
Immortal love of a different kind,
    other worldly.

  13. oneg2dblu says:

cbrown… Yes, pray unceasingly, and about all things.

Even about my questionable ramblings if you like.

To me, if someone teaches that there is another way to obtain your salvation then the, “one way,” God describes…
I would say to myself, that the other way was from another source other than God’s Word, which says there is no other way, then the way God teaches in His Word, because His Word is truth.

Ask, Seek, Knock, and the door will be opened.

    Be Blessed, Gary

  14. poohpity says:

Gary, do you follow God’s will and plan? What do you say is God’s plan for salvation?

  15. narrowpathseeker says:

Jeff1….Up on a mountain is one of my most favorite songs!!! I used to play that over and over…thanks for reminding me.. I will have to dig it out…I hope you had a Blessed Day.

  16. narrowpathseeker says:

Gary, I hope you had a Blessed day as well.. On another note, I have to wonder why you nibbled. ;-)

  17. jeff1 says:

narrowpathseeker have a Blessed Day too, I find Gospel songs gives me a peace of mind that gets me through many difficulties. When I was about 10 years old I was first introduced to Gospel music by the late great Elvis Presley. The album was “His Hand in Mine.” My sister leant it to the leader of a band who never give it back. I remember being very upset with her for not asking for it back. It was not until the internet came about that I was able to get it again. I had asked in many record shops but they could not get it for me.

When I listen to Elvis sing this, as he does it from the heart, I feel I have part of Heaven here on earth. I am now 61 years of age and He is still holding my hand.

You may ask me how I know my Lord is real
    (My Lord is real)
You may doubt the things I say and doubt the way I feel
    (The way I feel)
But I know He’s real today He’ll always be
    (He’ll always be)
I can feel His hand in mine and that’s enough for me

I will never walk alone He holds my hand
    (He holds my hand)
He will guide each step I take
And if I fall, I know He’ll understand

Till the day He tells me why He loves me so
    (He loves me so)
I can feel His hand in mine that’s all I need to know

I will never walk alone He holds my hand
    (He holds my hand)
He will guide each step I take
And if I fall, I know He’ll understand

Till the day He tells me why He loves me so
    (He loves me so)
I can feel His hand in mine that’s all I need to know
I can feel His hand in mine that’s all I need to know
I can feel His hand in mine that’s all I need to know

  18. SFDBWV says:

When I first read the subject I said to myself (or perhaps out loud) this is a question actually only God can answer.

God has left many questions, but the question I wonder is are we meant to answer them ourselves, seek answers from Him or set them aside and leave it for us to simply rest in the peace of faith?

Also do the answers to these questions aid or hinder the great commission of telling the world about Jesus and God’s plan of our salvation?

Probably somewhere in there are various correct answers depending on the question.

One thing I have learned is that thinking logically doesn’t always mesh well when viewing the supernatural matters of God and His way of getting things done. Which is one reason Paul seemed to have had no success with the “thinkers’ of Athens on Mars Hill.

Yet my logic makes me wonder, there may have been some that went home pondering what Paul had told them leading to their eventual salvation.

It is said in Scripture that if everything Jesus did had been recorded, the whole world couldn’t contain all the books needed.

Isn’t is also logical that the same can be said of God? That every Divine interaction and story of every person can’t be told in the Book. Perhaps in another Book, “The Book of Life”.

That for now all we need to know is given to us.

Perhaps for some a question is a thinly veiled doubt.

In response to Saled, I liked her thoughts, as there were people who did try and convince followers they were Messiah in Jewish history, such frauds soon faded from the spotlight. Even when Jesus clearly told the Disciples of what would happen to Him Peter said he would die to protect Him and in fact drew his sword on the night of Jesus’ arrest. But this was not how God intended for this story to be carried out. Jesus even rebuked such ideas as preventing his arrest.

For me, I think this subject has limited depth. So I will see where others may take it or what other subject matter may arise from it.

24 degrees on Monday morning, awaiting the rising of the sun.

  19. oneg2dblu says:

joycemb… I nibbled, only to test the spirit, as we are commanded to do such.
I like to pass all things through the filter, the word of God, which is truth.
So, I need not ask man for his opinion, when God provides those answers for us, how to test each encounter we encounter, and hold it accountable to His Word.
That way, like Christ, we can also give second chances, sometimes only to find, when nothing changes, nothing changes.

As a newly hired Cook, I’ve learned that things must be tasted to reveal what they actually are, not what they appear to be.

Sometimes, sugar and salt can appear to be made from the same substance, but just a little nibble reveals much. :)

Thank you for picking up on my ever trying, trying.
    Be Blessed, Gary

  20. oneg2dblu says:

saled… Yes, if they knew better, they would do better.

“Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.”

But, did God not also blind their eyes?

Did not in those days, men do what they thought was right in their own eyes?

History is a great teacher, but, we seem to keep repeating the test it gives us.

It is written, “All a man’s ways seem right to him.”

So, to me, man seems to do right by God, when He listens to God and Obeys.

Unless, we can find in His Word where he punishes Obedience, I’d rather err on the side of, trust and obey, according to the word, there’s no other way.

Or it that just the words of a song playing in my head?

    Have a blessed day,
    Gary

  21. cbrown says:

Gary, “A fly in the ointment” can often be only one word,”controlled”.

  22. joycemb says:

Good morning Gary. Thanks but nope, wasn’t my comment. Twas narrowpathseeker who asked about nibbling; thinking of the Easter bunny maybe? We all have to eat I guess..,

  23. poohpity says:

Listening to DTW this morning we saw that the women who came to the tomb to prepared Jesus body and were surprised that Jesus was not there another mystery revealed but the angels reminded them of what Jesus taught them earlier. (Luke 24:6-8)

Or the travelers on the road to Emmaus that came in contact with the resurrected Lord. At that time Jesus revealed so many mysteries of the OT that pointed to Him in (Luke 24:1-27)

That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14 As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. 16 But God kept them from recognizing him.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?”

They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. 18 Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.”

    19 “What things?” Jesus asked.

“The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. 20 But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. 21 We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago.

22 “Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report. 23 They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive! 24 Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.”

25 Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. 26 Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” 27 Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

So maybe it was not mysteries at all but a lack of trust in what God had taught. Trying to put human logic, reasoning and understanding to spiritual matters. Prov 3:5-6

  24. poohpity says:

Remember the times Jesus was teaching in the Temple from the OT prophets and said this day these things stand before you yet they did not believe.

I know for myself the many times I have prayed I believe but help my unbelief because some things just seem so mysterious they are hard to grasp.

  25. joycemb says:

27 Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

My PHD prof in New Testament once shared that he wished he’d been there to hear what Jesus told them concerning all of what the OT said about him. There is so much we won’t fully understand until we see Jesus face to face I think. In the mean time we keep learning as best we mortals can don’t we.

  26. poohpity says:

I often wonder when I come face to face with our Lord if I will even care about any of that any more or just be in awe of His Glory and Magnificence but until then the more I seek the more I can see a glimpse of that Glory now amazed.

  27. poohpity says:

Oh Joyce, many scholars have gone through the OT and have listed the things from Genesis through Malachi that point to the Savior. Although it may not be totally thorough it is enough for us to ponder now.

  28. poohpity says:

I am surprised your professor did not know that.

  29. joycemb says:

Pooh I know he did know that but still wished he’d heard Jesus Himself do the teaching. I can agree with that!

  30. joycemb says:

Like listening to our parents talk about the days/years leading up to our birth and what their thoughts/plans were for us!

  31. joycemb says:

So also do the prophets share about the coming Son of God.

  32. joycemb says:

Many cults hold that the leader only can hear from God and don’t listen to or accept input from anyone else. By this many are deceived and become victims. It started when a most beautiful angel decided not to listen to God but to become like God and was kicked out. Then he tried and succeeded in tempting Eve with the same power. All scripture is God-breathed, I believe, therefore not easily understood unless one decides they know it all, like Satan does and uses it to tempt the elect. There is wisdom in many counselors. i.e. teachers, scholars, and prophets. Marts post hints at this when he asks if there isn’t more to love than we understand.

  33. joycemb says:

Marts question about love was the previous post but am obviously still thinking about it! Did not mean to confuse anyone.

  34. street says:

mart said,”Shouldn’t having the words and Book of God been enough to give God’s own people an inside understanding of what he was going to do?”

no! mystery is something that is veiled. to be reveled later. if it never comes to light it would not be a mystery at all. the most joyous truth is God’s love for man and purposeful, gentle revelation of Himself at the cross through His Son. to settle for words or law vs. the author would be a big mistake. to get to the Author it takes faith. the kind of faith abraham showed living beyond words or a script. abraham saw, touched, conversed, ate with, and worshiped this God.

i find it interesting the mirror/veil is going to be done away with and we will see Him face to face. Jesus and God showed on many occasions it is possible to be in His presents and not die. He even invites us to come to Him. Emanuel, God with us, God for us, God incarnate.

  35. street says:

What was going on? Why were the crucifixion and resurrection such a surprise when they happened?

maybe we were in denial of the seriousness of sin.

maybe we were not understanding the joy of fellowship with God we were made for.

He showed Himself blameless and just when He condemns the guilty and strengthens the innocent with mercy and grace.

  36. joycemb says:

Street I think fellowship is the key. Thinking about how the curtain in the temple was torn in two making it possible for God to ‘escape’ from the confines of earth and move into our hearts forever. Mercy and grace indeed!

  37. poohpity says:

street, really enjoyed your take on the topic. :-)

  38. street says:

    Romans 16
24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) be with you all. Amen (so be it).

25 Now to Him Who is able to strengthen you in the faith which is in accordance with my Gospel and the preaching of (concerning) Jesus Christ (the Messiah), according to the revelation (the unveiling) of the mystery of the plan of redemption which was kept in silence and secret for long ages,

26 But is now disclosed and through the prophetic Scriptures is made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, [to win them] to obedience to the faith,

27 To [the] only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ (the Anointed One)! Amen (so be it).

  39. oneg2dblu says:

    Why the mystery? Good question…

When God alone blinds the eyes of the Jews today, or opens them to the Gentiles today, that is still the mystery, the drama, the unfolding still to come, it is in the tension created by still lingering unbelief, even though, it is repeated over and over throughout all history.

If I’ve read the word correctly ,He already came to save all of us, yet many did not recognize Him, or His Word, which is the Truth, and clearly says, “He’s coming back again!”
    Come Jesus!

  40. remarutho says:

Good Morning Mart & Friends —

Not sure there is an answer to the question “Why the Mystery?” Still, the cross of Christ is a great leveling force among all peoples. All are equally welcome and all are equally mired down in sin. The salvation story was indeed buried deeply in the Word of God. So deeply that no expert or interpreter saw it coming. It was there though hidden…

    Mart, you wrote:

“…before the chosen people of the Book could start telling their story of a resurrected Savior—to the whole world… they would be the ones who would betray their own Savior, Messiah, and God?”

While awaiting a Messiah who would be a man, a king, a prophet, those who knew the word missed the humble rabbi who called out the entire system of both Hebrew and Roman law.

The Apostle Paul told the church in Galatia:

“But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.”

At the foot of the cross all people are given grace to believe in Jesus. I pray that persons of all ideologies and religions will find themselves at the foot of that cross.

    Blessings,
    Maru

  41. joycemb says:

I was just thinking about how Jesus used ‘sinners’ such as prostitutes, lepers, Samaritans, tax collectors to reveal the true nature of God to those who knew God only by-the-book so to speak. Hmmm. A sinner would be more likely to attend a crucifixion, especially one outside the gates. Point made and taken. One must recognize oneself to be a sinner in the first place. The Law did that but not perfectly or enough anyway to reveal who God really is. Makes perfect sense now, mystery solved. God is love.

  42. jeff1 says:

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
    and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
    be with us all,
    now and evermore.
    Amen.

God will fulfil his promise while man keeps making promises he cannot keep.

    To God be the glory, great things He has done;
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory, great things He has done.

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
    To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,
    And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

  43. poohpity says:

So it would seem through the Romans and Galatians passages the mysteries were meant to profit faith, to build it up.

Before the Exodus the spotless lamb was sacrificed and it’s blood covered the door posts so they were passed over from the death of the first born in darkness. Just like the darkness and blood that was shed at the Cross by God’s first born. In Ruth we learn of the kinsman redeemer just like Jesus was our redeemer in that song jeff1 mentioned.

Even with the disciples they did not have to have much faith while Jesus was with them but then the Cross and grave pushed their faith to a higher level to more ahh haa moments mysteries revealed for understanding and to grow their faith.

  44. poohpity says:

    And ours!

  45. poohpity says:

Jesus had explained to His followers that they may not be able to understand all there is to understand until after He dies. John 16:12-16 NLT

There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’

“In a little while you won’t see me anymore. But a little while after that, you will see me again.”

So it would seem the mysteries are only brought to light as we can receive them.

  46. poohpity says:

    Or as our faith allows!

  47. joycemb says:

    Duh! :)

  48. foreverblessed says:

It is just unbelievable that the disciples didn’t get the message: I will be crucified, and resurrected after 3 days.
Mary came in the morning with herbs, and was crying because the body of Jesus was gone! John 20:10-18

But….. am I not seeing things that are obviously there in the bible?
I have seen things in the wrong way. This morning two ladies came at the door, handing out the watch tower, and offering a bible study course. They were talking about the bible that it gave directions to your life, and that it was telling that Jesus was coming back. I said: the bible is all about Jesus. They answered, one of the many things is Jesus.
I said: One of the many things?
And then I had to think about my own perception of the bible: the most important event in history was the coming of Jesus, back to earth! Yes, indeed, I still hear the pastor from the pulpit. Sure enough, that is what he said, and that is what I read in the bible.
And with His coming there are multiple prophesies in the Old Testament, and in the New, prophesies when He would come back. Lot of bible study time was in these events.
And the next important thing is to know the Law, and to live according to the written law. Yes.
And when you would sin, then the mercy of God is there through Christ. But better to prevent sinning, so the mercy would not have to be asked. It is like a treadmill, you tread faster and faster, trying not to sin.

So to me,having Jesus and number one in your heart is more important then bible reading. I did a lot of bible reading, without seeing that Jesus was number One. And it brought me to a great depression.
(but as I now see it, that is the function of the letter of the law, it burns you out, till your heart is open to the fact that it is the Living Word, that is Jesus, is the One that you need, that is why the old covenant preceeds the New Covenant, which is far better Hebrews 10:1, Heb 7:19)

How is it possible that finally God opened my mind to the fact that it is Faith in the Living Jesus, that He lives in me, as long as I hold on to Him, and look to Him, then He will do in me, what I could never do myself.
The most important day of History has long been: Jesus dieing (dying?) for the sins of the world!
Psalm 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made.
Jesus Himself called it: the Hour, “For this hour have I come into the world” John 1:27-28
The hour that He hang on the cross, the hour that was ordained for the Pesach meal, Ex 12:6-7

The whole of Psalm 118 is beautiful, to me it is about Jesus being crucified, Psalm 118:27-29

    The hour of the Bible!
And Jesus is the same Today as He was in History,

  49. poohpity says:

If you already knew that Joyce why did you not share it with us?

  50. joycemb says:

What? I was just agreeing with you, not being sarcastic or snotty. Ease up girl. Your perceptions are not always correct.

  51. joycemb says:

Yes I am one of the ‘us’ also Pooh. Relax. It’s just a blog :-)

  52. joycemb says:

Pooh please don’t go to all the trouble of explaining yourself as I already know your defensive tactics and they suck. My bad for even getting near one of your comments as I knew right away I should just wait until someone else spoke, like forever who’s post I also love ang agree with.

  53. joycemb says:

LOL LOUDER THAN EVER! I hope everyone else can just chuckle at the absurdity of the past few posts here as I am! :-)

  54. street says:

steve said,”When I first read the subject I said to myself (or perhaps out loud) this is a question actually only God can answer.

God has left many questions, but the question I wonder is are we meant to answer them ourselves, seek answers from Him or set them aside and leave it for us to simply rest in the peace of faith? ”

i wonder if the answers come faster when we love and give the way we were designed to. we were made in the image of God. He loves us with His Heart Mind Soul and Strength……sound familiar? He certainly gave us His Spirit to teach reveal correct train. like a pilgrims progress our pursuit of God will have difficult challenges. His pursuit and faithfulness to us is our life not the other way around. may light truth and love burn brightly in your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

  55. poohpity says:

Oh Joyce forgive me I did not realize adults says Duh! in agreement. I have not heard that since my kids got out of grade school, then I took it as juvenile sarcasm. I now know when an adult says it that means they agree. Thanks for the clarification.

  56. joycemb says:

Thanks Pooh, that makes sense to me. I put a smiley face after the duh to make sure you understood it was said in agreement. Maybe I was being juvenile? Will have to watch that here.

  57. joycemb says:

Actually, speaking of jr. high. The use of stickers (smiley faces) is also quite juvenile really. Adults don’t need stickers to get their points across. Sometimes I see stickers here that make me think someone is trying hard to make a point. Just words would be more adult I think.

  58. joycemb says:

Apologies for being fashionably off topic….

  59. joycemb says:

AND once again I fall for it, ugh. Pooh you insulted me then make it my fault. Uffdah as we say in the Midwest. Vanity, vanity, all is vanity.

  60. foreverblessed says:

Dear Joyce and Pooh, indeed relax, lets enjoy together what Jesus has done for us, personally.
One thing of this blog that is great, it teaches me when to see my old man, and not to react to it. I have to die to my old man. Sometimes I just cry out to God, and I tell Him: I do not want to react like that anymore, please help me. And there His Grace is all that I need. His work in me is also a mystery to me. After a long time, things that worried me, things that would hurt me, do not anymore! The sting is gone.
Not out of everything, bust step by step.

God calling April 15 “Go back into the silence to recover this calm when it is lost even for one moment. You accomplish more by this than by all the activities of a long day. At all cost keep calm, you can help nobody when you are agitated. I, your Lord, see not as man sees.

Never feel inadequate for any task. All work here is accomplished by My Spirit, and that can flow through the most humble and lowly. It simply needs an unblocked channel. Rid yourself of self and all is well.”

So, Joy, isn’t this a great training, rejoice in it, and be glad!

  61. foreverblessed says:

It’s late here, I have to go to bed. All sleep well, and in the eventide,my advice is go to Jesus, get
close to Him.Tell all your worries to Him, all your questions, tell Him, and then wait for the answer.
When you cannot sleep, or wake up at night, see it as a chance to be quiet at the feet of Jesus, and come to rest in Him. The rest in Him is what He wants with us, our soul and heart and spirit coming at peace, and being quiet.

  62. street says:

But why? Why for thousands of years was the sacred story told and written like a great mystery— so that before the chosen people of the Book could start telling their story of a resurrected Savior—to the whole world… they would be the ones who would betray their own Savior, Messiah, and God?

in a kind of good way leaving it a mystery was for our good. imagine if sinful man ran with the distorted truth of human sacrifice or killing infants to make life more bearable by appeasing the powers to be? God makes a good point in the blood of bulls and goats being offered annually could not take away sin. if only God can forgive sin then only God can redeemed fallen sinners from sin. How mind and heart breaking this love God has for sinners in that he offers eternal life in Christ Jesus? we will not be separated from this love in His death because He lives and we will continue to live even when we are separated from this earthen vessel to put on immortality. one revealed mystery begs for a new one. i look forward.

  63. joycemb says:

Street from my readings I have discovered that infant sacrifice, especially the first born, was the norm in ancient cultures. Even God killed the firstborn of the Egyptians to get them to let-go of the Hebrews. But for the blood on the doors their 1st born would also have been killed. But for the blood of Jesus Christ we too would die.

  64. joycemb says:

I just have to say this to foreverblessed in a good way: good night mom, have sweet dreams and thanks!

  65. narrowpathseeker says:

Joyce…for what it’s worth…you are very loved and admired. Your comments are always interesting, inspiring, forthright, loving, humble, right on target, and/or humorous.

To the best of my recollection, it seems that some of the Pharisees (who knew scripture well) on several occasions asked Jesus questions in a manner that “seemed” they were interested in learning, but Jesus knew they were just trying to trip Him up. He didn’t cater to their cunning and manipulative ways…He told them straight out or asked them questions that they couldn’t answer without exposing their agenda.

There were many times over the years when I was filled with false pride and self righteousness, among other things, that some people came right out and told me off BLUNTLY. I didn’t LIKE it, but they helped me get over myself a lot more than good friends with good intentions that pacified me. AND I KNOW what it is like to be CONVICTED right in church during a sermon and having what the people that told me off confirmed as being right on target!! I know to pray for a person that is “difficult” or downright “spiteful”, but meantime, I think forthright is the way to go,

  66. narrowpathseeker says:

Jeff1..I know what you mean about the way Elvis sang gospel songs…he had such a special, beautiful voice. Thanks for sharing all the poems and words to so many gospel songs. thanks again for reminding me of God on a Mountain…I have to look up the singer on my cd.. she doesn’t have that great a voice but she sings it with such heart…she is my favorite artist to do that one.

  67. joycemb says:

Narrow thank you so much…I can stop banging my head against the wall now. There is a balm in Gilead. Bless you.

  68. poohpity says:

It seems to be that it was the blood of the lamb/goat that the angel of death passed over that home not because of who was in it or what they did but because of the blood. If the Egyptians had believed God they would have gone into the homes of the Israeli’s or put the blood on the lentils of their own homes. It seems to be the death of first born males of everything adults and animals alike. Similar to the blood of Jesus it does not depend on who we are or what we have done in anyway but because of who’s blood it was that was shed for everyone who believes. It is His blood that God sees covering us.

  69. poohpity says:

narrow, I know you may not remember the reason you first got angry with me. You came on the blog sharing that you were angry because you had to take care of your ex who abused you and now there was no one else to take care of him. I had the nerve to be concerned for you and told you that no one has to put up with abuse but you shared that was the only place you had to go and because you felt that you if did not care for him no one else would. I said I would pray for another option and then you flew off the handle at me. That anger has been carried over all these years. Even when I apologized it was refused.

  70. poohpity says:

The topic at the time was about spousal abuse.

  71. narrowpathseeker says:

Even the gist of that reasoning is twisted and I won’t nibble any further..some people are very clearly transparent.

  72. oneg2dblu says:

To me, those who actually “obeyed the word given,” about putting their Passover Lambs blood on their door posts, thus protecting them from this first born curse in doing so, they acted accordingly, and were blessed accordingly as a result
    .
    That is what is written…

So, how can anyone say that, “who they were or how they acted,” using my words, meaning those those who received that word, meaning also those who obediently followed that word, is to be treated as having no significance?

    Hello!

It just does not follow the story line.

However, it plays so well into the modern teachings we support today, which claim a no need to obey mindset, which to me, serves to support only that purpose.

Let’s not dismiss how acting in obedience plays into our receiving blessings, for it is just as important a lesson learned today, as it was back then.

We only know this, or, what is actually written, that those who’s posts were without that blood, where not given the word so they could not act according to the word given, and they all lost their first born sons.

God selected “who,” and “their obedience” is what played out into fulfilling that blessing.

We need not add anything into the story, or the word about what others might have done.

In my opinion, the story line lacks nothing, it is perfectly complete, and is written that way and for a reason.

    Those who have ears…

    Be Blessed, Gary

  73. jeff1 says:

narrowpathseeker, I love to share the words of songs that I personally find so uplifting. My favourite singer of God on the
Mountain is Lynda Randle I found her on “You tube” and I think she sings from the heart. Elvis’s first introduction to music was through gospel music in the church that he attended. It was the first dream of his life and one he never fully left as you can hear from his performances. I am so glad that you share in my love of it.

  74. joycemb says:

    Trust and obey,
    for there’s no other way,
    to be happy in Jesus,
    than to trust and obey.

So the old song goes and for me it’s true, if I am not trusting AND being obedient I not happy. A pastor once said that some who have trusted Christ for salvation will be saved by the skin of their teeth even though they disregard the commands, but those who are so arrogant are not really happy in the LORD nor can they be happy in life, either. And that is one of the great mysteries about God that we live with today, That WHOSOEVER calls upon the name of the LORD shall be saved.

  75. SFDBWV says:

Gary, years ago before Jimmy Swaggart’s fall from public grace, he said something that made good sense to me concerning the people before the coming of Jesus.

He had said in his opinion from the very beginning in the Garden there was a promise of a redeemer and that all the people who believed that, and looked to this “redeemer” for their salvation fell under the promise of being saved (spiritually).

I thought that made sense to me and may explain why so many ancient cultures spoke of a coming savior in the birth of a child.

That the recorded story of Israel’s religious leaders that did not recognize Jesus when He came shows that they did not understand all that they thought they did from the Scriptures.

It also seems that God hid this from them in order to carry out His desired plan.

Just imagine how much we don’t understand as well as letting our own thinking get in the way of God’s desires for each one of us.

Sorry, I don’t see how trying to discuss a mystery about ancient history is going to help us to promote the Gospel or be better people in our treatment of each other, now.

If anything it shows that God did not want Israel’s leaders to accept Jesus, rather He wanted things to go just as they did.

All we need to do is accept that it was His will.

    Steve

  76. street says:

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

i verse 41 a mystery of epic per-portion unfolds before our very eyes. Jesus, resurrected, is standing before His closest friends. He shows them His hands and feet. they are filled with joy and amazement. God says they are devoid of faith because joy and amazement. i don’t think i am any different. to think otherwise would to continue in ignorance. these mind bending life altering circumstances could not produce any faith at all. it is not till their minds were opened and they became children of God vs followers of a book. is it time to put the book away? i think not. it’s time to seek the face of Dad. Jesus used the book to guide them in all truth. how much more difficult it would be without the Holy Spirit. let the joy of salvation trump every circumstance of your sojourning and my the God of your sojourning not be a mystery.

  77. joycemb says:

Street your post makes me think, like Mart, that the great mystery of God is quite simple. Love. Period. Yes I think our great purpose as we journey is to learn this truth. To love someone enough to die for them is hard to grasp as we are built to love life and living unless mental disease like depression and a host of other ailments has damaged that beautiful goal of our Creator. We see it all around us as death and destruction are rampant since Cain killed Abel, his brother.

  78. joycemb says:

Jesus said if we have murder in our hearts we have killed. The root of sin must be destroyed for the branches of a Good vine to flourish. And it becomes the fruits of love.

  79. street says:

dear joycemb love has to have an object in mind, not a general ambiguous purpose. ambiguous purpose leads to idolatry. we are quit good at making and loving idols. it’s just that it makes us blind deaf and dumb. i wonder if i can rightly say faith is ambiguous in that it is not tangible other than worked out before God, like abraham. no man could say abraham had faith in God. only God could say this. we pear into the book to view this mystery just like all the mysteries where God interacts with man. God let my soul find rest in Jesus.

  80. joycemb says:

Yes Street, my use of the word Good was in reference to Jesus. I agree that the word love is used ambiguously in the culture now days and we need to be careful that our love is rooted in Christ alone.

  81. oneg2dblu says:

joycemb… I love your use of words, and the mindset that generates them. :)

  82. oneg2dblu says:

Steve… we will never know it all until we get there, and when we get there, it probably won’t matter to us, we’ll be so busy Rejoicing and Praising God.
All I know now is, that I know, that I know, that Jesus is Lord.
    Amen?

  83. joycemb says:

Amen Gary, and thank you for your kind words!

  84. poohpity says:

I know I am not a man but just a woman but street, I can say without a doubt that Abraham had faith or else he would not have left his home, country and family to go where the Lord had sent him nor would he have put his son on the heap of wood and attempted to kill him before God provided the sacrificial lamb to take his place. Another mystery foretelling the story of Jesus?

  85. foreverblessed says:

Steve, I do believe that this is still a good topic to discuss.
The disciples were desiring a King of Kings and Lords of Lords, and so do many christians today. Their eyes are more on Jesus to come back from heaven and rule the earth, then that they are seeking Jesus to rule in their own hearts now.

I know, because for sure I was one of them.
God wants us to be in Jesus now, we in Him and He in us.
Just as Paul wrote, he wanted nothing to know but Jesus and Him crucified. This message had been so mysterious to me, but living in Jesus means that everything that He has done for me He has done on the cross. When I am in Him, then when Jesus went to the cross, I was there with Him. All my sins, my shortcomings my depressions, everything is taken up in the cross, and there He gives new life to me.

The great mystery, and still a mystery to many christian. We are still looking to follow commandments, instead of, as Joyce was saying the root of all sin has to be dealt with: Our old man on the cross.

The God at eventide of today, April 9, is about that
“April 9 – The Life Glorious

If by the Spirit you mortify the flesh, you shall live.

This is a further progress-step in My Kingdom. The flesh must hold no pleasure for you that is not held in leash, always under subjection to the Spirit.

It was the utter subjection of the flesh that was manifested in My Silence at the pillar, and in the face of the jibes and insults and blows. It was this complete subjection which meant a Risen Body.

Resurrection-faith is not a matter of belief in Me, and in My Power working a miracle, it is a faith in Me and My Power leading to entire subjection of the body.

The body completely under control of the Spirit is a Risen Body. See now the importance of self-discipline.

  86. jeff1 says:

Yes foreverblessed I am one of them I long more for Jesus to return to a world that as forgotten him and I struggle to keep my heart in the right place.

Christians today are divided like always, that is why we must focus on what we agree on which is Jesus. What we can agree on is that Jesus died for our sins and that is a good place to start for Christians who are divided.

I cannot walk the same walk as another but as I walk others can lift my spirit and I can lift other’s spirit by my words and actions.

Some day I will be in one step with God but until then Lord Jesus Help Me.

Lord, help me walk another mile, just one more mile
I’m tired of walkin’ all alone
Lord, help me smile another smile, just one more smile
You know I just can’t make it on my own

I never thought I needed help before
I thought I could get by, by myself
But now I know I just can’t take it any more
With a humble heart, on bended knee
I’m beggin’ You, please, help me

Come down from your golden throne to me, to lowly me
I need to feel the touch of Your tender hand
Remove the chains of darkness let me see, Lord let me see
Just where I fit into Your master plan

I never thought I needed help before
I thought that I could get by, by myself
But now I know I just can’t take it any more
With a humble heart, on bended knee
I’m beggin’ You, please, help me
With s humble heart, on bended knee
I’m beggin’ You, please, help me

  87. foreverblessed says:

Jeff, let me explain, I was looking forward to Jesus coming back MORE then Jesus now ruling in my heart.
That meant that I was sort of handicapped in my walk with God, only when the whole world was obeying God would I be happy, and so thinking I was belittling the life of Jesus that could already blossom in me:
In Christ Jesus we have everything that we need, the bible says, but I was adding.. when the whole world is following Jesus, then I have everything that I need.
See, I wanted not the suffering that we have in the world, but only happy and bliss, while as Jesus promised that as He suffered so will we, not for the sake of suffering but for the winning of many souls.
It is now the day, this day, the day to be fully of Life everlasting, I do not have to wait for Jesus to come as King over the world, it is now Today is the Day

  88. SFDBWV says:

Foreverblessed that is a very interesting view of the topic. That the reason the disciples didn’t understand what Jesus was telling them about his coming passion and death and the reason most of the experts and followers of Judaism didn’t was because it is and was the misguided view of a conquering King vs a suffering servant.

The Book of Revelation gives a detailed view of a great tribulation poured out upon the earth, ending only when the conquering King returns.

Of a blissful existence on earth of a thousand years of the King on the throne with we His followers and the survivors of the Great Tribulation.

Followed by another rebellion, then judgement, then finally eternal peace.

At this point in time all is not right in the world and all is not right in the lives of Jesus’ followers.

Jesus told Pilate that His Kingdom was not of this world.

It seems to me that peace, like happiness, is fleeting and momentary, at least here in this world. I have no experience as to the next except referenced, that it should be better if we are followers of Jesus and residents of His Kingdom.

It seems to me that only upon His return are the two planes of existence merged together; this world and His Kingdom.

It seems to me that “having Jesus” in our hearts enables us to suffer this life as we look forward with hope to the next.

Are you saying that the Kingdom is already here, in our hearts, even though we continue to suffer in a fallen creation?

You may be right, there may be more to this subject than I first thought. Lots of more confusion to sort through in the attempt to have peace with a personally satisfactory answer.

It is no wonder some need to quiet their minds and meditate on being at rest. (That’s when I usually fall asleep, from exhaustion, not boredom.)

  89. jeff1 says:

What I am saying foreverblessed is that I am not walking the same walk as you, I am NOW looking forward to Jesus coming back MORE then Jesus ruling in my heart. Why is it wrong to long for Heaven even though I cannot have it now! That is what keeps me going in my faith is my longing for heaven! If I did not believe in a better life to come I could not walk in faith now for I would be like unbelievers who say this is all there is. The Bible shows us how men and women of God walked different journeys, some had little faith, some had Great faith, we mirror our forefathers, in that we have all our own journeys with God. I know that the whole world will not follow Jesus, at least not in my day, when Science is now more important to man, time has shown that, when we look at wars and how each war is to be the last war. I know there will be suffering in this world and while I trust God with all suffering I cannot lie to God and say I enjoy it. I long for all suffering to end for as I see it we are contaminated until Jesus returns and takes us from this world. As believers we are taught different, what we can agree on is that Christ CRUCIFIED, RISEN AND WILL COME AGAIN. God will use us as he sees fit for if my longing for Jesus is so great then I am lacking. I do not despair at my lacking for I am trusting God who has already win the victory, he paid a great price for me and I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worrries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. Faith, hope, love and the greatest of all is love, not our love which is conditional but God’s love which is unconditional.

  90. oneg2dblu says:

As this thread continues to wind up, or down, let’s remember we have a couple of things going for us, that the world does not yet have.
Although, they probably have the all encompassing “Love,” that has no boundaries, but is that use of the word Lov,e actually salvation found only in Christ, or is it used as the all encompassing, and ever silencing of any other opinions, as an utterance just to cover all our religious beliefs, doctrine, peoples, nations, even the ancients, if you will, regardless of their opinions, actions,or beliefs, or ungodliness?

One, the Holy Spirit lives inside every Believer.

But, the rest of the world suffers today, due their unbelief.

We can, just like the thief on the cross, who was enlightened by the Holy Spirit, find our Today, is Today.

For Christ said, “Today you will be with me in Paradise!”

He did not say, you must wait, for when I return again, you will be taken up in the clouds.

    Just a small point, perhaps.

Also, among the many other things we could all share, like songs, psalms, poems, dirges… whatever, we also have, as Steve mentioned, we have the Gospel Message to share, which in my opinion, the ancients did not have.

According to the Word of God, found in 1 Corinthians 3:11,
“For no man can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

The ancients had there beliefs, about many things including the flood.

I would ask for the more learned among us to clarify just when in their opinion,, the Garden story ended, and the rest of the story started?

Did it occur when Adam and Eve were thrown out of that Garden, and God placed His fire there which prevented them from ever entering again?

History, in my opinion, is written for a reason, to continue to teach us all, just how far reaching any disobedience and the resulting sin it births, which always separates, still exists today, in the flesh driven nature, not fully submitted to the third Person of God, the Spirit.

    In my opinion,
    Gary

Foreverblessed, thank you!Col 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

  92. cbrown says:

P.S. Just read the above post, and Gary.

  93. poohpity says:

Believing in Christ and all His has done we are given a new life, another chance. We not only can hope for a life in heaven but a new way while we remain here. No longer a life of drudgery, complacency, being defeated by the struggles but one filled with newness and joy. The trials, suffering, troubles the world offers one can rise above knowing that if Jesus over came the world so can we in Him.

Life at times I know for myself seems to over power me. I can wake up and say to myself what garbage am I going to have to face today but other days I can wake up knowing that whatever I face today the Lord is with me and He is bigger than everything that may come my way. The difference being the first way I am self absorbed, focusing on me and the circumstance I find myself in the other way I am focusing on the Lord and His work in my life turning trash into treasure. The second way even the mundane tasks of everyday living bring enjoyment like dancing in the rain. Life does not have to defeat me so I ask myself why would I allow it to. I have a new way, I am a new creation, I have been given a new chance every morning so what am I going to do with it. Complain and grumble :-( or sing and dance :-).

  94. remarutho says:

    Good Morning All —

Mart, you launched the topic “Why the Mystery?” like this:

“In the death and resurrection of Jesus, we remember and celebrate events that no one but the Messiah, himself, saw coming. Even when Jesus began repeatedly telling his friends that he needed to go to Jerusalem to suffer and die at the hands of religious leaders— before rising the third day (Matt 16:21), it was as if he never told them at all.”

The shroud of mystery seems to be over the spiritual eyes of everybody — faithful and unfaithful alike! It is an integral feature of the human mind that what is established as “true” will hold up no matter what evidence is presented to it. When Jesus repeatedly and faithfully explained to the disciples what would take place, they could not hear Him.

Safe to say our modern minds are inhibited by the same feature. The crucifixion of Jesus was not “possible” to His followers, so it was not permitted in their hearing or thinking. Perhaps we should be imagining the unthinkable if we desire to get a glimpse of the mysterious working of God’s will.

Try this: By 2050, the dominant religion of the world will be Islam, according to current growth trends. What great moving of God will emerge in such a world? Could it be the realization that the Creator God sent His only Son to deliver humankind from destruction…?

    Just wondering.

    Maru

  95. joycemb says:

Good morning all! So much to think about already. God CHOSE to reveal. It is His doing.

Narrow, Forever, and Steve I wanted to commend and encourage you all for the sufferings you endure as you live with and take care of others. God is well pleased with our devotion and our labors for Him. You all have been or are pouring yourselves out as living sacrifices to the glory of God.

And Chris, the work you do of ministering to prisoners is a blessing as you sacrifice your time/efforts to encourage and bless those forgotten by most.

And to all those with unnamed burdens carried silently may God grant you peace this day as it is the day the Lord has made so be glad and rejoice in it! Even despite the heaviness of heart, mind, and body we have a HOPE that springs eternal. God is already here, but coming soon while we wait in the midst of the mystery of our great God!

  96. poohpity says:

No thanks Maru, 2050 is a little to far away for me to ponder but I know that no matter what happens in 2050 God is still in control.

  97. joycemb says:

Maru I just heard in a discussion about Islam that 70% are like 70% of Christians, calling themselves believers but not really living according to the way God intended. And that only about 3% are radicalized. That said, I too see that this is opportunity for Christ to reveal Himself to more people as tensions mount. God always seems to use the pressure cooker of adversity to see that only He can deliver safely from the fear of death/destruction.

We get upset because our nation is not as Christian as it once was, but if we all stay safe and happy in our own little cocoon how does the gospel advance, really? Could it be the explosion/destruction of the temple (US) as we know it might even be in God’s control? Lots to think about again.

  98. lovely says:

.I believe.that…this mystery of salvation could not have been known by just reading the word because the Pharisees could memorize the law yet they can’t recognize the Messiahwhom they read about. John 5:39You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.they..read the scriptures but don’t believe in it.so joycemb you are right it comes by fellowship.salvation plan is to change us inside out.yes I read somewhere in the post we are to believe the word is living..therefore we need to allow it to change us.it all begin with just believing the word.

Steve it’s interesting how u mentioned that only upon His return are the two planes of existence merged together; this world and His Kingdom. In this scripture unlocks this mystery.Matthew 6:10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On EARTH as it is in HEAVEN.Other words..it is God’s will to bring heaven on earth

  99. remarutho says:

Love that image of the pressure cooker, Joyce! We have a few stunning examples of the tension between Jesus-followers and those who oppose the faith exploding into a new thing. The Chinese church is one. Another is the stories (some call it urban legend) of Muslims seeing visions of the Risen Christ — and being led to faith in Him, then becoming disciple-makers, teachers and preachers for the Gospel.

The Pew Study (2013) I cited also predicts that the number of those unaffiliated with any faith will be smaller 35 years from now (2050). Such a thing might indeed increase the pressure and the heat in the spiritual struggle of light and darkness!

God is good — all the time.

  100. lovely says:

Which brings me to the subject of suffering.Jeff 1 I don’t think it’s wrong to dream of heaven..but..from what I know & believe.you don’t have to dream..because you can bring Heaven on earth. what The Lord has said it is true Matthew 6:10. The key to unlock heaven on earth is by prayer …I think most of the time Christian struggle believing something they can’t see so they stop praying.Mark 9:23
Jesus said “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” in the story of Esther it looks impossible to reverse the fate that their people will perish. She could have given up..yet she didn’t & ask for the whole nation to pray & fast for her. In face of suffering I say we don’t give up praying & overcome challenges .we will not accept defeat..For God has given us the power from within. We are more than conquerers

  101. lovely says:

About the Passover..yes it is a preparation of the coming of the perfect lamb. God was actually in control from.the beginning. He knew Pharaoh will not let the Israelites go so he has already declared His judgement from Exodus 4:23.
So I say to you, let My son go that he may serve Me. But if you refuse to let him go, indeed I will kill your son, your firstborn.what an awesome God we serve.
    Lovely

  102. jeff1 says:

I am thinking about what you said Pooh about whether one should complain and grumble or sing and dance. I have always been a better listener than talker so I usually get to hear peoples complaints and rarely get to express mine. I don’t see the point in complaining to people, they hardly ever take it in or else they come up with a sadder tale. I complain when I see injustices in the world unfortunately today authorities that I put my trust in have been part of the injustice leaving me reluctant to trust those in power. Where have all the honest men, gone every day there is a revelation of one kind or another coming out about people who held positions of trust and they have been abusing those positions and others who were in their supervision. This is where false teachers have damaged God and as a result a falling away from the faith so prophecy is very relevant today as was in the past. I get what you are saying about having Heaven here on earth but it can be only a little bit of Heaven for man is not capable of sustaining the world without God and at present that is what he is trying to do. I for one have had enough of men’s judgements for as Albert Einstein said Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

  103. street says:

thinking heaven in earth is peace and joy with God.

  104. joycemb says:

Some encouragement from brother James while we wait here on earth.
    James 1:2-8New Living Translation (NLT)

    Faith and Endurance

2 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

5 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. 6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

  105. poohpity says:

jeff1, I can not speak for anyone else but when I find myself grumbling and complaining I get depressed. I have to ask myself am I trusting God. Looking for the good and positive things in life can bring joy.

I went to a parenting class for my sons who both had ADHD and I found myself because of their hyperactivity were always getting scolded. So the instructor taught me how to pay more attention and look intently for positive behaviors that I could give them positive reinforcement. It changed their behavior as well as mine as a parent.(Phil 4:8-9 NLT) It is true it brings more peace which prompts one to sing and dance.

  106. phpatato says:

Joyce, along with your encouragement (and thank you for that!), may I add that I’ve been thinking of this verse most of the day from Philippians 4:11 NIV – I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

It seems that happiness on earth comes with being content with what you’ve got.

1 Timothy 6:6 – But godliness with contentment is great gain.

1 Timothy 6:8 – But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

Hebrews 13:5 – Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Really, what more do we need to be content and happy while in our earthly tents but to have food and clothing and to KNOW that God will never ever leave us or forsake us.

God is so good to us and perhaps I should say for us.

    Goodnight and good sleep everyone.

  107. joycemb says:

Yes Pat contentment has been on my mind also. A spiritual discipline from the mid 1400’s of the Catholic church is called ‘ars moriendi’ or, the Art of Dying Well. It was written for Christians in the midst of the black plague where thousands were dying in Europe. A brief description is: You acknowledge that life is difficult in a fallen world so you don’t have to pretend that all is well. As you surrender your own agenda and embrace life as it really is rather than as you wish it was, and as you invite God to teach you what He wants you to learn from your circumstances, you can break free from the burden of constantly wanting more and experience contentment that will lead to peace.

(These words are from my personal notes but I forgot who wrote them, possibly Ignatius?)

I think this life takes a daily dying and seeking to learn contentment whatever comes our way and whatever has happened in the past. Not worrying about the future but trusting God for tomorrow.

    Good night all

  108. foreverblessed says:

Steve:”Are you saying that the Kingdom is already here, in our hearts, even though we continue to suffer in a fallen creation?”
Yes, I am. And that is the discipline we have as a christian.

Let me say, that this is a hard subject, and I am mere human.
God in His wisdom know all things. But as Joyce wrote just above:
“As you surrender your own agenda and embrace life as it really is rather than as you wish it was,”
I was living in a “I wish it was the Kingdom and everybody obeying God”

I also believe that as we keep on believing in God, and in Jesus, that the Holy Spirit will finally lead us in the way that He wants to go. So there you go Jeff, everything is alright as long as you keep your eyes on Jesus.
I got depressed, imagine what it is like, when always thinking things would be better, and they don’t change.

And I was reading in the bible the encouraging verses: 2 Peter 3:18 grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
And, thanks C brown, Col 1:27
And then I started praying, Lord you work this out in me.

If God chooses not to sent Jesus back now, nor has He done that the last years, it is better I line up with His plans.
How can He leave us alone and miserable, only to be happy in the Kingdom to come. That does not make sense to me.
How could Jesus have said: I give them life, and life to the full?
There must a be life to the full in Jesus NOW, Today
I was miserable because my focus was not on Jesus and Him crucified, but on Jesus.

What if Jesus is busy doing a work in our hearts, making it a Garden of Eden, to stay in the terminology of Gary,
so that He can send lost souls to us?
This is what is”take out the beam in your own eyes”
Also the topic of God at eventide April 10

“Loose your own body from all bonds. Remember “the beam and the mote.” As the fault (the beam) is removed from your own eye, giving you the power to remove the mote from your brother’s eye, so if you bring your body into subjection, discipline it wholly, you will be enabled to free your brother from bonds that bind him to ill-health”

Then we will be a garden where people come and find rest, and healing..

  109. jeff1 says:

I do not find that the people who grumble and complain are suffering from depression but are likely to depress me if I listened for too long. As someone who suffers with depression I can only listen to them for a little while and I need to get away and recharge my batteries. Most people who grumble do it out of habit and usually have nothing to grumble about. I have been fortunate in that the people I knew did not have easy life’s yet their determination, perseverance and faith in God I have marvelled at. As someone with mental health issues will tell you it is the isolation that can be difficult, as I often feel that I am outside looking in more of a witness to than a participator in.

  110. SFDBWV says:

Pat and Joyce I absolutely enjoyed both your comments this morning, thanks for the good wake up stimulating words.

I am reminded that so many of the questions we tackle here have been addressed for hundreds of years, even thousands and that the best answers always come under attack by ignorance of them and or stubborn resistance to them.

Sometimes people keep digging only wanting to hear what they have already settled in their minds as an answer, rejecting all others.

Just another reason we are to practice “patience”.

Thanks again ladies, I may copy and post some to share with others later, if that is ok.

    Steve

  111. SFDBWV says:

Foreverblessed and Vivian, I love it that the three of us were writing to this site from three different countries all at the same time.

I also find both your words this morning to be filled with truth and wisdom.

Vivian is right negative words have a corrosive effect and why we are to have on the Armor of God, but sometimes just like our Lord we need to get away and refresh ourselves.

I will ponder all of what you have said Foreverblessed, and see that of course you are right, but for me the distractions and battles of this world make it impossible for me to fully settle into that *perfect* place of peace. It seems that for me the battle of life will continue until Christ returns or I am called home, whichever comes first. Thank you for your patience and understanding as well as your gracious comments.

Hoping all a good day today.

    Steve

  112. jeff1 says:

Meant to address the last post to you Pooh on the subject of grumbling and complaining. I guess everyone has their motives for grumbling but I do agree with you Pooh that we should focus on what is good in life. This will be difficult for I watched a programme on Doris Day and as one man said we live in a culture today that does not like good images and she (Doris Day) endorsed that image. In essence her films were entertaining without explicit violence, sex and horror. Our culture today is the very opposite as explicit violence, sex and horror are the images we see on the big screen so perhaps it is not a mystery as to why our societies are becoming more violent and depraved but a fact of men doing what they always do putting financial gain and notoriety ahead of what is right.

  113. SFDBWV says:

In digesting the comments this morning I was reminded of something I learned long ago as a young man.

In order to know how to live, you must first learn how to die.

Vivian you are as, they say, “spot on” in what you have observed of the world today. Everything in our cultures and as a reflection shown in our arts, are dark and gloomy.

Pretending they aren’t and pasting a smiley face on them doesn’t change what lays beneath.

    Steve

  114. jeff1 says:

What country are you from Foreverblessed? It is Steve amazing that we are all, in our own small way, sharing our beliefs and hopes for a better world to come from far distant lands.
Yet we are united in our trust in God and desire to follow Christ and pray that others someday soon will join us in our search for God’s truth and mercy which surpasses any truth and mercy known to men/women. I have a tendency to usually put men and that is because I believe men usually hold the most powerful positions in the world but that is not to say that women have not influenced them so it would be unfair to say men only in this instance.

  115. jeff1 says:

Meant to say that I love reading all the comments here as they are so insightful and I feel I can be honest. I have taken from comments today that by focusing on Christ and not my own problems I will not go under when trouble comes my way. I find that in my efforts to do this I often take one step forward and two steps back. I am with you Steve I feel too that it is impossible for me to get the “perfect” peace, a peace that surpasses understanding until Jesus returns or I am called home. I truly hope that God loves a trier for it is the story of my life.

  116. oneg2dblu says:

foreverblessed… thanks for the mention this morning,

“What if Jesus is busy doing a work in our hearts, making it a Garden of Eden, to stay in the terminology of Gary,
so that He can send lost souls to us?”

I’d rather you have to give all the Garden references beholding to Steve, as it was Steve who actually first referenced any “Garden,” into this thread, through his saying how he was in agreement with the opinion of Jimmy Swaggart, while he was busy not agreeing with my opinion,
“Sorry, I don’t see how trying to discuss a mystery about ancient history is going to help us to promote the Gospel or be better people in our treatment of each other, now.

If I may copy and share with others, if that is okay.

Let the Love continue, let the hearts of all, become that new garden spot for others who God places in our path, for a reason.

Let us continue to love each other, as we are all still learning.g the lesson about the speck and the log.
    Gary

Gary, years ago before Jimmy Swaggart’s fall from public grace, he said something that made good sense to me concerning the people before the coming of Jesus.

He had said in his opinion from the very beginning in the Garden there was a promise of a redeemer and that all the people who believed that, and looked to this “redeemer” for their salvation fell under the promise of being saved (spiritually).

  117. oneg2dblu says:

I wonder, did the Garden survive the flood?
Spiritually speaking, it lives in us!

  118. jeff1 says:

This quote from Albert Einstein caught my attention and I do see myself in it.

Before God we are all equally wise-and equally foolish

If this is so then I do believe God has a wicked sense of humour but thankfully he has a sense of humour.

  119. phpatato says:

    Good morning Everyone

You’ll have to forgive me with my question because I am still, (although I hope at the tail end of being) hit with the “influenza B” virus……

    But

Gary……what was your comment this morning all about?????? I’m sorry but I just can’t make heads or tails of what it is you are actually trying to say.

  120. joycemb says:

Hello Vivien. You said: As someone with mental health issues will tell you it is the isolation that can be difficult, as I often feel that I am outside looking in more of a witness to than a participator in.

I have been there done that more that a few times. I have been so depressed a few times I had to quit working, slept on couches of friends/family for a while (until they threw me out, literally)But what I learned was that during those times of isolation, whether self-imposed or due to the ignorance of others it was because God wanted me all to Himself! The idea that God wanted to spend time alone with me was exciting but hard to do sometimes. I still have a fear of authority figures and have to remind myself often that my God is a good authority figure and consists of love, meaning loving thoughts toward me, no matter how I feel or what my illness is telling me about myself.

It’s all part of the journey of faith. You are not alone, my dear sister-in-the-Lord but part of a great multitude ever learning, struggling, and suffering but still learning what an awesome God we have!

This week for the first time in over a year I was finally able to attend a local home group and was pleasantly surprised to find believers I had known 30 years ago still gathering to worship and learn. It was such a blessing to find them, however, my anxiety about leaders I perceive as mostly abusive is really bothering me today. I just have to focus on the good I guess. It’s not easy for me who has suffered abuse from church leaders in the past. I’ve just asked God for wisdom for how to deal with this so am waiting expectantly for His reply. He always guides me when I ask for help.

On the fun side I invited my 6 year old granddaughter Maddie to stay overnite. Not expecting much sleep but we have such fun!

Hope all can find something enjoyable to do despite the tough times all around.

    blessings Joyce

  121. oneg2dblu says:

jeff1… what a great truth can be seen in that type of humor.
I see how truly brilliant it is to add God to that equation.

Just think, when we add Christ into any statement after the cross, we automatically all see a (+) sign.

    Gary

  122. oneg2dblu says:

Pat… I was trying to say that just being added to any equation or statement is not always a positive thing, and then an equally fundamental thing happened, as joyce just added how being left out of any equation, is not always a negative. (-)

The rest of the statement was more about opinions, mainly, that we all seem to have them, both learned and foolish among us.

Like the speck and log lesson that we all are still learning as we all get to be on either side of that one at times.

It is like trying to help others, while somehow ignoring our own faulted position.

I’m sure that has either helped you and your flu, or possibly made it worse. I’ll pray for the former.

    Be Blessed, Gary

  123. phpatato says:

Thank you Gary! You have summed up very nicely what it was you were trying to say. I am sorry that your first comment went right over my head. Thanks for taking time with me.

Be Blessed yourself and please keep well! I wouldn’t recommend the flu to anyone! In fact I do recommend getting the flu shot. Every year. Even if it is only 15% effective. And pray for those who are in charge of deciding what each year’s vaccine will comprise of. They have either just decided or are about to decide what will make up the 2015/2016 flu shot. With the way the viruses constantly mutate, it must seem like a daunting task to nail it correctly.

  124. oneg2dblu says:

pat… I actually avoided flu shots for years thinking I’m healthy I’ll just take my chances.
Then when I was exposed to school children every day on the bus I was driving my mindset changed and I started taking the shot every year.
Then, I retired and stopped again for four or five years, and did not think this years shot was worth taking, but you are absolutely right, even if it is only 15% effective, why risk even that much.
All it takes is one new case of infection and you immediately say to yourself, I’ll be first in line next year.
    Stay hydrated…
    Gary

  125. joycemb says:

Here in the US it is National Sibling Day so give your siblings a shout out and bless them!

  126. phpatato says:

Gary I believe the thinking behind the push for everyone getting the flu shot every year is because of those who can’t get it (can’t for various medical reasons). It’s called herd immunity. When the herd becomes inoculated and builds up an immunity, then they in turn protect the weaker ones within the herd by not getting sick and therefore not passing on the illness to them. In a lot of cases, it becomes a life and death situation for the weaker one if they get sick. So, for me personally, it becomes doing the Golden Rule – “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”.

I am making a point of staying well hydrated. It’s been 7 days and although I think I am on the back end of this thing, I hear that weakness and coughing may last 2 or 3 weeks.

Thank you for your care and concern!

    Pat

  127. foreverblessed says:

Steve, what I read in your comment,
“but for me the distractions of this world make it impossible for me to fully settle into that “perfect” peae”
When Jesus said: Come to me all you who are heavy laden and I will give you peace.
Then you answer Jesus: I am too heavy laden to come to You.

You know, I was in a church who preached that the true Rest that God wanted was on the 7th day, the Sabbath.
After I found out that the 7th day sabbath was a shadow of the things to come, the Reality was IN CHRIST, Col 2:16-17, then I started this quest to God, show me that Rest, I want to enter that Rest.

And I do believe that God blesses the trier, as Jeff wrote, so I keep trying to enter that Rest. I have not fully grabbed it yet, and I do believe too that God wants me to keep trying, that is why it is said: Persevere. That is why Job is such a good example, he did hold on and persevered, even though he was grumbling to God about his situation, that God would change his situation, that God would heal his body. God didn’t do anything, let Job complain. I heard somewhere that the trial of Job lasted 20 years. So, even if it takes 20 years for God to give that Rest, I still will ask for it, reached out for it. Because I take the words of Jesus literal, He promised rest. So I take these words to Him and take Him for His word: ”I will give you rest”

I do believe that we have to keep asking God for that Rest, like the old lady, in the parable that Jesus gave: she kept asking the judge to defend her case.

Jeff, I live in the Netherlads, and as I am typing now it is 11.30.
I find it very interestin what you write about the situation in Ireland, about the IRA, that stopped bombing, about the aftermath. I pray that you will find peace in your heart, even though there is no peace yet around you.

The disciples got that perfect peace, Paul had it, even when they were suffering in this world, The peace God talks about is a spiritual peace, one that transcends the human and world level. The peace no one can take away, no matter what happens to you, like you gave the verse of Romans 8:31 nothing can come between us and the love of God.

Thanks Pat, for that comment about being content in what you have, that is what I mean with, we have to accept where we are now, instead of wishing the Kingdom of God was already here.
I pray that God may heal you, and give you contentment when you are not healed yet. That perfect peace that transcends the worldly situation we are in.
    God bless you all!

Sorry Steve, when I reread my comment just above, my question to you is much too blunt! Forgive me, I am in no way saying you are not up to the line, you search for God, keep searching, He will give you perfect peace, no matter what. I pray for you! And for Jeff, and for all of us here, who keep trying, and to be like Job, not giving up on God, even though we might grumble at Him.
How gracious God is to keep along side us, and waiting for the moment opportune to reveal His perfect peace in us

Pat I pray your sickness will end soon! I had not heard of herd immunity before but that does make sense. No antivirus cures everything but we must do what we can with what’s available. There has been a lot of flu where I live and did not get the shot as I am no longer working and do not go out as much as I used to. So far so good.
My daughter-in-law will not vaccinate my grand kids so has had to change pediatricians several times and I worry about them and the impact it may have down the line. She has her reasons though and thinks she is doing the right thing for her kids. We all do what we think is best I guess.
    Blessings, Joyce

Just want to thank you Foreverblessed for your kind words and prayers. I know quite a few people who have been to Holland but not sure where, but they had a good time there. I am trying harder at not grumbling so much and being grateful for what I do have which is much. I long for the peace you talk about and do believe with persevering. The British Prime Minister during WW2 Sir Winston Churchill said “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” He later said that “It was the nation and the race dwelling all around the globe that had the lion’s heart. I had the luck to be called upon to give the roar.” To find peace we often have to go through war and since I believe there is reasons for everything I trust God with both. I may or may not acquire peace this side of heaven but I trust in the peace of the world to come because God has said it, not because I believe it.

foreverblessed… Thanks for sharing that herd mentality, we are facing that very problem in the U.S. today, as more and more unvaccinated peoples stream over our borders illegally.
They disappear off the radar and are absorbed into the schools, welfare system, and health systems, and labor force.
Only God knows what price we will pay for not being more proactive, or herd wise in protecting the rest of the herd.
Just as surely as He sees the direction this now called, Non-Christian Nation, we all see spiraling downward in our now normal loose living, and our no longer fearing, God position.
May God have Mercy on us all.
Next year instead of getting a flu shot to protect myself, I’ll get one to protect others.
Thank you for blessing us with your sharing.
    Gary

Gary, that was Pat who talked about the flu shot.
But thanks for the blessing anyway, I will accept it in great thanks.
And I pray for all of you too, Steve, Jeff, Gary, Joyce, Street, Chris, Narrow, Pooh, Maru, Lovely, and all who read this blog, may God bless you, and keep you, and lead you. And may He keep His eye on you.
