The Person Who Changed My Life

DSCF0705Caught a bit of a CNN feature last night called “The Person Who Changed My Life”. It had been advertised for some time on the network as “CNN’s most well-known faces introduce us to the people who had a profound impact on the course of their lives.”

The idea intrigued me, in part, because of what I consider the difficulty of answering the question. In one sense we all have countless persons who in one way or another have changed the way we see our world. So if challenged to pick one, how would we make the decision?

As it turns out, the CNN personalities chose a range of persons who they credit for helping to shape their personal, professional, and spiritual lives—someone who believed in them, challenged them, told them what they didn’t want to hear, or showed them what they needed to see about themselves or others.

I’m still thinking about how I might answer it. In one sense, I feel guilty for even opening the playing field to anyone other than the same One who forever changed the lives of Peter, Mary of Magdala, and Matthew. No one intrigues, inspires, or mystifies me more than the only One who never saw anyone he couldn’t love, challenge, and call to higher ground.

But he is also the one who deserves to be thanked for everyone who has helped and shaped us in ways for which we are grateful.

Am wondering how we as a group of friends might answer the question, who has changed our lives, and why? Who, beyond our Lord, outside of ourselves, and—maybe it would be best to say—without naming— comes to mind as someone we would say has left something of themselves in us in a way has has helped to shape our outlook on life.

Good morning Mart and all; still reeling from the storm and sore from too much shoveling, but wanted to take a few minutes and join in the BTA community.

As Mart has said the question of who outside of God and perhaps ourselves has had the most impact in my life is one to think about for a while.

My first thoughts are that all across my life each and every good and bad person I have encountered has helped shape me into who I am right now, as right now can change in the next few minutes, hours or days.

Most of us I think are like sponges taking in the good things we like about others as well as avoiding the bad things we see in bad behavior.

The people who have encouraged us positively as well as those who have discouraged us negatively both have helped us become who we are.

It will be difficult to name just one, I think, but we will see as the subject grows I may be able to do better.

Would also like to say that circumstances also shape us and one of God’s most used tools.

02 degrees partly cloudy skies and 26 inches of snow still on the ground. Spent all of yesterday clearing streets, alleys and parking areas, a little fine tuning today.

When I first read this the very one has to really be three, my children with the youngest probably being the icing on the cake. They caused the desire to stir within me to want to be a better person for their well being. I saw who I was as reflected in them. I had no idea how to be a parent I just wanted to be sure they always felt wanted and loved no matter what their behavior was. We sort of grew up together learning and experiencing life with wonder, questions and discoveries. One of the greatest responsibilities a person can have teaching them to be able to function through life dependent on God and interdependent on others while separating from me as their go to. So those are my tops.

Jesus, my husband, my kids……a few good Pastors and friends!
But, I remember a lady I used to work with for about a year way back when, and a few years after that I ran into her at a shopping mall parking lot…..well, she RAN over to me very excited and hugged me and said: “I’m born again now!”…..I was so excited for her and then she said something very strance: ……”and I remember everything you said, Miss Peggy!” I don’t have any idea what I said in year we worked together, but she was hearing from The Lord no doubt. We never know what an impact we can make in someone’s life…..

    Good morning

Oddly Mart, I was given a link just yesterday that touches on this topic. It is worth a look see, 6 minutes long.

A google search on youtube: TedxToronto – Drew Dudley Leading with Lollipops will take you there.

I am running out the door to look after the second twin grandson who is a bit fevered and has a nasty cough. I was last week looking after his brother with the same thing. So quickly I will say, who are my Lollipops? My Mom and Dad. Without their Godly parenting and influence, where at a young age of 11 I received Christ as my Saviour, I honestly don’t know where I would be today. I wandered far and hard even at that and was lost for many years especially in my teen years. But God’s word always stands…..Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” I am so thankful He never let go of me.

God Blessing to all of you today

My father has been the biggest influence in changing my outlook on life, but it has taken me the best part of my life to realize that my father’s wisdom was not of this world.

My father had insight to matters not even concerning him that I now know was a gift from God.

God gives us different attributes and my fathers was that of wisdom.

I believe that God wants me to know myself, not just to point out my sin/weakness but so that I will get to know my strengths.

I have stopped listening to other people telling me who God is and have started listening for myself. I look for God in nature, (the sight of a rainbow on a dreary rainy day) music, (particularly american gospel artists) the people I meet through work and play. I was so focused on the ugly in life that I had forgotten how to enjoy the beauty but it was always there waiting for me to have the vision to see it!

I have hope again for the future, and it is there, because I can take literally, that Christ died for me, and if I did not believe that then I would not see hope for the future, for while people come and go into my life, Jesus remains steadfast!

  6. bubbles says:

The Sunday School teachers of the “beginner’s class” changed my life. “Beginner’s class” was four and five year old children. Those dear ladies loved us; I loved going to Sunday School. They helped us memorize verses. One Sunday I realized I needed Jesus in my heart. The teacher, who was the Pastor’s wife, took time to read John 3:16 to me and explain that I was a sinner in need of a Savior. I knew I was being convicted the week prior to Sunday School. I was able to see this teacher again when I grew up and I thanked her for leading me to Jesus.

My mother influenced me. . I only had her for 8 years and 21 days. She loved the Lord with all of her heart. She left memories of singing hymns at home, praying with me every day, practicing her Sunday School lesson with me. She taught me the importance of reading the Bible. I would ask her to play with me and she would, but reading the Bible came first every morning. She had missionaries and the pastor come for dinner many times; she used hospitality to minister to others. She made it look easy. Her years may have been short but she left me with a lifetime of memories. She was a wonderful mother, and I thank God for her.

  7. remarutho says:

    Good Morning All —

My life has been shaped by many people — family — friends — enemies — and especially enemies who became friends.

One Sunday School teacher I remember took an interest in me and prayed for me and with me. This teacher prayed in the Spirit — and spent the days (after retirement) preparing, studying Scripture and visiting with people in the community to pray with and encourage them.

I think of M.C. often and thank the Lord for all I learned from our friendship. My friend died a few years ago, yet M.C. lives on in my heart.

  8. joycemb says:

My encouragers/mentors in the faith have always been dead Saints. Oswald Chambers, Basilea Schlinck, Augustine, Brother Lawrence, Spurgeon, Teresa of Avila, Apostle Paul to name a few.
I was 12 when I first heard the gospel in a church I went to on my own, I wasn’t asked to ask Jesus into my heart then, but something clicked in me and I wanted to know more. Seeing this longing in me enraged my father and he refused to drive me to church after that and began horribly abusing me twice on Sundays to make sure I knew he was in charge of my life.

When I was 30 and taking my own children to church and teaching Sunday School I had an encounter not unlike Paul’s during a Lenten service that changed my life forever! Since that time I have had a couple more times of actually seeing and hearing Him; times of great spiritual and emotional healing and teaching about His ways. Yes my discipleship has had a few physical mentors along the way and everyone I encounter has something to teach me-whether I like the lesson or not.

mart said,”I feel guilty for even opening the playing field to anyone other than the same One who forever changed the lives of Peter, Mary of Magdala, and Matthew.”

dear mart i don’t think we ever need to feel guilty about running into this love that comes from God, in others or in ourselves for others. sure we get to struggle with the flesh and it is wonderful when love wins! the greatest thing, i think, is being ware of this love and letting it increase in spirit and truth without restraint. yes i remember friendships and love from people of my past and the affections i have had for others and the difficult people i would consider unloving and even an enemies. we are the sum of the influences and circumstance of a Sovereign God Who loves us.

thinking we need to open the playing field, knowing God is the Umpire. if He is First no one can usurp that place. not easy

  10. poohpity says:

After my children I saw the change the Lord made in my mom’s life. She took me and my 2 son’s in and every morning after her morning time spent with the Lord reading her bible and praying the look on her face and the glow about her, I wanted what she had. So I started going to church with her in the evenings because I only had 2 pair of pants and 3 blouses then four months later she bought me my bible which now is falling apart. She did not preach to me I just watched her and saw the changes in her and wanted it.

Later I found out that her and her Sunday school had been praying for us for 2 years and it worked. The Lord gave me direction and guidance for the help I needed. Everything I watched or heard was Him calling me and on my way to a shelter I stopped to wish her a Happy Birthday and that very morning the Lord gave her a passage in scripture to open her home to us and boy am I forever grateful she did and the journey began.

  11. foreverblessed says:

I hate to admit it, but the persons who were helping the most in changing me, were the diffucult ones. The persons in my close family circle, the ones for which I have shed many tears.

Now, recently Psalm 126 was read in the oecominical prayer in the old church, 600 years old, in our town. Reading it gave those tears I had shed had a profound mening now, they were not shed in vain, a harvest would come out of them. Psalm 126:5-6

It also shows that I, as a mere human, can do nothing, God can only change hearts. I am utterly powerless, that made me more humble.

  12. SFDBWV says:

After thinking of Mart’s question and CNN’s program exposé I have to conclude that there is no “one” person in my life that I am able to say has had the most influence in molding and shaping me into who I have become.

To name one diminishes the importance of the others as all have had their place of importance and influence in shaping me.

It seems as I reflect on this concept that many of those people helped me to get to the next level of my life, preparing me for what lay ahead and the next place I found myself in over and over again.

Though Mart had said aside from God, it would appear to me that it is God who placed such people in my path of life as He grew me and continues to prepare me for the next “thing”.

Amazingly it is 47 degrees as I write this with 24 inches of wet heavy snow on the ground (and roof tops), forecast is for rain today and snow tonight.

Exhausted, tired and sore, your friend.

  14. jeff1 says:

I do not see that the difficult people in my life changed me, learned me about human nature and how complex a person can be, yes.

It was the people who went the extra mile that made me look at myself and see how I lacked enthusiasm, motivation and passion for life.

I was brought up in a Society where life meant nothing. Shootings and bombings where an everyday occurrence and many friends and neighbours of mine where victims, including myself.

You do not have to be murdered to be a victim, there are the walking wounded or the walking dead in many cases. There is more then one way to skin a cat.

You can be hear in body but not in spirit if you see where I am coming from!

I am not the person I was before evil came to our Province nor are my country men/women.

We are fighting the good fight with all our might but it is Jesus who has win our victory and I thank God for I am so weary of war!

  15. street says:

    But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
    11
    My feet have closely followed his steps;
I have kept to his way without turning aside.
    12
    I have not departed from the commands of his lips;
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.

you know after reading this i think of jonah’s prayer. they are quite similar. both men of faith, living with unanswered questions. holding unto a sure hope. struggling to love.

  16. street says:

i just ran into this….something to think about.

11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

i know Whom i have believed and i did hear His voice.
yes there was a speaker present, but it was God Who spoke to my heart. jeff you are right,”You can be hear in body but not in spirit”

  17. joycemb says:

Pooh your post at 9:27 has been convicting me all day. Firstly I have to apologize to you for the times I have hurt you, and secondly I praise God He used your own mother to draw you to Himself through the Word. I am sorry and ask your forgiveness. Even though I hurt you because I was hurting it’s no excuse. God is still teaching me.

  18. jeff1 says:

Yes, Street, you can, not quite sure what makes me so sure of it, but I know it is true for me personally.

God is never more with me than when I am in my lows, and it is why, I no longer struggle when I am in them, but instead, listen to my music, and let God bring me through them, and I believe the more I become dependent on Him the less I will depend on myself.

It is quite amazing and often overwhelming to know you have been touched by God! It is even more overwhelming for myself who has wandered into darkness!

  19. poohpity says:

Joyce, I forgive you. I fully understand that hurting people resort to hurting others.

  20. street says:

jeff said,”It is quite amazing and often overwhelming to know you have been touched by God!”

the real amazing thing is God saves sinners who were slated justly for death, but provides righteousness for them. we need to respond and not forget.
people do change us, hopefully for the better.

  21. poohpity says:

The next person on this journey that the Lord lead me to was the man who was head of the counseling ministry of our church. He taught me after leaving my old way of living I needed to learn communication skills and personal responsibility about my feelings and actions. I learned how to listen and reflect what I heard to see if the person I was speaking with knew I was hearing what they had to say. I also learned that what I was feeling was more a reflection on how I perceived things not necessarily what was happening. Little did I know at the time that would lead me to the desire to be in the caring ministry of counseling.

Gosh this whole topic has given me a great time of reflection on this journey and how true that verse is that says “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”. The learning and changing seems to never stop. Things taken away and things added through this process and nothing ever remains the same. Praise God!

  22. SFDBWV says:

It was -3 (minus three) this morning with 14 inches of compacted snow still on the ground. Calling for 1-3 inches of snow tonight and 1 tomorrow, then soaring up into the 40’s for the following few days.

Not sure if it is challenging or confusing.

One more thing about this subject.

What kind of difference are you making in another’s life? Would someone be able to say such things about you and how you helped them up and put them on a road to recovery or success?

    Steve

  23. jeff1 says:

Jesus died to save sinners, it is men/religions who changed the gospel throughout time. The gospel does not change because I see it from my perspective. God keeps His promises, and many today believe God is not in control anymore, and I almost was one of them until God proved to me He is the living God.

Do not look to others to change you but look to God to change you. For neither your closest family member nor your best friend knows you like God does and only He can change you from the inside out.

There are traits about myself that I do not like and I try to hide them from myself and others but God tells me He knows my weaknesses but still has a place for me in His Kingdom.

Do you know what I am saying; God has never expected me to be perfect, but to do what I can, and He will do the rest and how He does that may be through someone I do not even know.

What is it that God wants from me,it is to trust Him, and that is the only thing that I can do for God, is to trust Him, no matter how difficult life may seem, God is only asking that I trust Him.

I have been mistrusting God by all the questions I bombard Him with instead of looking to Christ and knowing I am saved!

  24. poohpity says:

Maybe if the topic were to list the difference one has made in the life of others then that would seem more of a boastful refection. Of course anyone who has been touched by the Lord will automatically touch others, some may take credit for it but others will give all the glory to God.

God brings people into our lives for His good reasons and purposes, answers to prayers, to satisfy needs, encouraging, extending hope and the ability to comfort others who may have gone through the same things. God seems to enjoy using us since that is the sanctification process of doing good works and sharing the Gospel.

We know that the bottom line is that God used the people He wanted to cross our paths to grow us into the people He knows we are capable of being and we may never know all the lives we touched in the process whether for good or bad but God will use us, imperfect as we are, just as He has used others, imperfect as they are, to touch ours.

  25. poohpity says:

Maybe it could be that one’s life has not changed and that is what stops mentioning them and what impact they have had on us!?! Mart mentioned bottom line that it is God who changes us but went on to say that other people have effected us along the way. It brings me great pleasure to mention those who have touched my life and how, all of them I have went to one on one and thanked them personally.

Mart has effected my life as well by teaching me how to consider different views and ask some very important questions to think about and dig deeper into my beliefs.

  26. street says:

jeff said,”Do you know what I am saying; God has never expected me to be perfect, but to do what I can, and He will do the rest and how He does that may be through someone I do not even know.”

“be holy for I AM holy.”

dear jeff you are right we are not perfect. God provides this holiness and righteousness to us because we are not, nor could we make it up on our own.

jeff said,” What is it that God wants from me,it is to trust Him, and that is the only thing that I can do for God, is to trust Him, no matter how difficult life may seem, God is only asking that I trust Him.”

trust or faith is the beginning, love is the end. love cast out fear and i would be so bold is to say love cast-out sin and unrighteousness. this is in regard to sinners, not God. for God is love and in Him there is no sin. God in His love went after sinners Whom He loves. to think that i will be in Gods presents with my faults and sin would be on the broad road or according to a different gospel. God has told us at the cross what the fate of sin is. it is also the payment for our sins. He gives us a couple of things His Spirit and eternal life. even paul walked in blindness for a short period of time after coming to Christ, we are no different. i think paul really wanted to walk in the light after this and his prayer was heard. sometimes God does stuff to us to make us grow, painful at times, and want the things we should want. keep your eyes on Him and the world will grow strangely dim. i know you feel like you are in a marathon and it is so. as for holiness and righteousness they are freely given along with His Spirit and His Word. the hard and difficult part is sharing this correctly.

  27. foreverblessed says:

Last week in church a wonan came to me, she was so excited, she said I would like to know, since I always talk about praying for people whom God puts in our thoughts or on our paths.
3 years ago a young lady, with a scarf on her head, out of the blue started to talk to her, how terrible het life was, her husband treating her as a prisoner. She went on and on.
My friend was so devastated hearing her story, just outside the supermarket, and felt totally incapable to do anything.
She finally said: I will pray for you.
Thanks you, the young wonan said.
And after that my friend has been praying a lot for her, a total stranger. But her heart wept for her, and she kept praying.
Now she got word that this young lady has turned to God and has become a Christian! She was so excited!
See, this thing of praying is not hopeless, it is God working on them.

That young lady probably doesn’t know which person was important in her being as she is now: free!

  28. SFDBWV says:

Over a dozen years ago I was introduced to a movie I believe was titled “Play it Foreword”, I did not like the ending at all; my prerogative.

The concept of the story was fine, do something good for another and the good deed will keep moving along blessing others as it went along.

If someone was special in your life enough to be noteworthy, what have you done to continue their good deed?

Of course if you are a taker and not a giver, the good deed stops with you. If you only think of yourself and not others the full Gospel is only a gift for you to receive and not one to implant in another.

Receiving forgiveness is one thing, being filled with the Holy Spirit another. The proof of the Spirit’s presence in you is documented by a change in your behavior, from the old you to a Christ-like nature.

The topic is about someone other than God who made a life changing influence on you, in doing so we may reflect on whether or not we have done or attempted to do the same for another.

If we have only taken and not given then we have nowhere to go with the concept.

I have only ask for us to think about it.

If in thinking about it, my question is offensive, maybe a little more humble reflection is necessary and not an attitude against the question or the questioner.

    25 degrees and snowing.

    Steve

  29. jeff1 says:

Street, says people do change us hopefully for the better. That has not been my experience. My father’s example by his life, both his words and actions, I am benefitting from now, but in my earlier years no one could change me for I thought I knew better.

It is God who is changing me, by allowing me time to grow, when I should have grown years ago for I did have the right teaching but wandered from it.

If I had not wandered, who knows, I may not have learned so much about God’s mercy and love. The truth is I cannot trust my own decisions anymore because of past bad ones and that is why I now listen to others close to me and God in His wisdom has given me discernment on whom I can listen to.

I believe God knows me better than I know myself, my weakness to wander, yes, God entrusts those like my father, whom He tested and found not wanting.

God can change me in ways I could never imagine but I am stuck in the past, for it keeps coming back to haunt me, so what will be the end of me, I do not know but I trust God to be with me,for despite great difficuly with loving myself, I know He does, the cross is the evidence of His love and the truth is I have not found love like this anywhere.

Can love so PURE exist in an environment like this one, I do not believe so, as Street says ‘to think I will be in Heaven with my faults and sins would be on the broad road’.

I can not change another’s heart, nor walk another man’s journey, for it is by the miraculous work of God, and not humanely possible for me to do.

  30. poohpity says:

Steve, I think you may have missed the point. If someone you have touched makes a choice to share how you touched them then all is good but if the one who is doing the touching boasts in the the things they have done for others that will be all the reward they get. Normally we do not do things for others to get praise but to bring praise and glory to God. For instance read Matt 6:2-4

We share the Gospel because we want people to know God and we do for others for the same reasons, we want people to grow in love and knowledge of our wonderful God. We do because of what has been done for us and it is only with God’s power and His influence in our lives that normally effects the lives of others and forever was right we may never know how.

The people I mentioned did not have a clue how they effected my life until I told them how much they did. They were just doing what they do everyday in their life they did not know they were doing it in front of a sponge who was soaking up and noticing everything around me.

  31. poohpity says:

A long time ago we had someone come on here and tell of all the things he had done for others and the resume was long but from the praise he got from the readers was his reward.

I even boasted at one time of an approximate amount of those that I have shared the Gospel with and that came to believe but the Lord convicted me that I was just there at the time the Lord had opened their hearts to receive His word. It actually had nothing to do with me but just going when I was sent with the words that were given to me. I confessed my pride when it was a false pride cause it was not about me but about the Lord preparing the hearts and the path ahead of my going. That was my ignorance for which I was guilty.

  32. poohpity says:

Like what forever was saying we may not know what seed has been sown, or fertilized, or watered just by our living our lives dedicated to the Lord. He seems to use us when we do not even realize it but just being who we are and not really trying to do anything. That is why it is nice for those who were touched to share how they were touched.

  33. street says:

dear jeff a couple of parables come to mind. one of the talents and the second one of the lamp. the good servants traded with the talents with other people by faith and received a return. in other words they suffered lose of talents for return of promise by others for a future return. we know in today’s world it doesn’t always work out. in God’s kingdom i think it does, because He is the guarantor. He is free to give us trials and tribulation, but guarantees a reward for faith. the righteous shall live by faith. i saw a video yesterday a guy speaking about a conversation in egypt the day before the passover. the one guy was deeply worried and upset about what was going to happen because of recent events. the other guy ask him if he had prepared the meal put the blood on the door of his house? the worried man said yes. the speaker ask which man lost his first born, son? he replied correctly. neither one. when your eyes are on the Lord worry and fear have to take a back seat or leave altogether. they can not stop faith from working or stop God’s will. as for the lamp, nothing is hidden from God or the lamps light. live work trade with what God has given you. we can not do it with what He as not given to us. He wants to give us more and the more is of Himself. thank Him for the past and His faithful protection. i will agree with you i/we should have died a long time ago, but God chose life and it Glorifies Him!

  34. remarutho says:

    Good Morning All —

    Mart, you ask:

“In one sense we all have countless persons who in one way or another have changed the way we see our world. So if challenged to pick one, how would we make the decision?”

Choosing one is difficult — and how should I judge the impact of “the one who changed my life?” Some people are just important to us — as parents or siblings — or childhood teachers.

Some people come crashing into our lives by action and influence that change the very road we choose or the worldview we begin to embrace.

I chose the teacher who lived a life sold out to Jesus. Every resource and talent was dedicated to the Lord by my friend M.C. I learned from that relationship that I could aspire to a fuller and deeper love and understanding of God — year after year — trusting Him more and more to make the changes required. I still quote my friend — and remember the devotion to God’s word M.C. showed me.

    Joy all day,
    Maru

been there and still do that! the help i receive is from God and His Word. i know i have rationalized in the past and it muddies the water of the present. the flesh rears it ugly head every chance it gets. He did not leave us orphans and gave us the Holy Spirit. He will always be with us. the problem is our God given choices and He respects them. the Spirit teaches us to do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; He told us to deny ourselves take up our cross daily and follow Jesus. the hard part is knowing that none of the saints of the past received everything that was promised here. this is temporal. we are looking for the eternal. this is the faith we are to live by, faith in God and His Word. all the saints endured pain and suffering like Jesus and we commend them for their faithfulness. we need to be found walking faithful too. God is able to bring you home, He’s not done with you or me. He loves and He is faithful.

My heart knows this is so true, Street, and when I see He is working in others it gives me much encouragement, that with His guidance I can make a difference in a changing world that too often seems to be leaving me behind.

  37. street says:

when we follow Jesus, we leave the world behind. He prayed that we would not be taken out of the world the night before He died.

14 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

after remembering this i better reread His prayer for us. it’s been awhile. good night and i hope you have a good weekend.

  38. foreverblessed says:

When there are spiritual leaders that inspire us, that is nice. I have, in my youth looked more to people, the leaders in the church, and I had to learn to have my eyes fixed on Jesus. Because in my case it had turned into idolatry.

In my country there is a big charismatic leader who turned out, just before Christmas, to have had an affair with the wife of a fellow elder in their church. This man was a hero to many. This keeps coming back to my mind, and when it does, then I pray for these ‘lost’ sheep, as they are not lost, Jesus is still their King, and I pray He will even more be their King, because of this ordeal, this man letting them down.
So that this will be a time of learning to, as the song goes:
    Fix your eyes upon Jesus

  39. foreverblessed says:

Mart also writes that he has reservations into asking which person, as Jesus is the one who is the one who changes US.
But nevertheless there are people who have had a great impact in our lives.
The apostle Paul had a great impact on me, well, his writings.
When I saw that the legalistic way of being a Christian, was the Old Covenant way, Paul’s teachings were immensely helpful. I was keeping all the Sabbathdays of the Old Testament, Sabbath on Friday sunset to Saturday sunset, which is hard in wintertime.
Col 2:17 is a profound scripture to me.
I believe that all setbacks can be turned into gold, when Jesus comes into them. And changes us into even stronger persons, Helpful to help others.

  40. foreverblessed says:

The bible verse I wanted to quote from the NIV:
    Col 2:16 and 17:
    These are a shadow of the things that were to come;
the reality, however, is found in Christ.

  41. poohpity says:

forever, Paul was a good example because whenever people started to look up to and worship him, he nipped that right in the bud. Paul would explain that he was just a man as were the others that had done miracles, kindnesses, good in the power and name of Jesus and he would never allow anyone to put him on a pedestal. The opposite seemed to be true that they explained all the areas that they still found lack, faults and failures and that was the very reason not to look up to them, only in Jesus was found perfection.

  42. poohpity says:

It would seem that many Popes, Pastors, Priests and teachers want that centerstage but if they really amount to a hill of beans they will direct people to Jesus and let the people know they are only men that struggle against the same things many others struggle against being honest about who they really are. They all share in the perplexities of life just as the people who learn from them do. Even the Pope in his cloistered life struggles against the evil one and the flesh and to not let people who follow him know that causes undue harm and great disappointment when the truth does come out.

  43. poohpity says:

That is one of the very reason I have so enjoyed reading the bible because even the people God had chosen for great tasks still had great defeats, failures, doubt and struggles as well. No human being is immune to them, it is part of the human condition until that day when we met the Lord face to face.

  44. poohpity says:

    Matt 20:25-27; Mark 9:35, 10:43-44; Luke 22:26-27

  45. jeff1 says:

Thank you, Street, for Jesus’s prayers, it is a reminder that I am not alone in my struggles and very encouraging.

I think it is very difficult in these modern times to find a person who is like the biblical characters such as Paul or Peter. I am not sure that we should compare ourselves as times are very different and so too are we.

If I try to compete with men/women of such character then I may be setting myself up to fail.

The other day, myself, and a few others were talking of a lady who died, the last of five sisters. We remembered them from our childhood as they called every Sunday to take us to the gospel hall for hymns and prayers. One of the group asked if none of them never married and another answered there was only one man in their life and that was God.

There were dippers and very respected and although none of us where of their denomination we all had enjoyed our Sundays with them as children and they had been a shineing example of what a Christian looks like these days.

As one of the group commented (and she herself is a lay preacher) they are a dying breed. I cannot compare myself to women like this or I will become hopeless in my self.

I do not count what I do, or do not do, for that matter, but do charity work, help out neighbours, family and friends. I combine it into my social life and find that I am too busy or too tired for anything else.

I enjoy what I do for others, or I would not do it, for my belief is that if you do not do it in the right spirit then it is best not to do it at all. Yes, there are times, when I have went a place with a friend when I would rather have been somewhere else but in general I believe the spirit in which I do it is much more important than doing the deed.

I also find that modern day thinking is very different, people will only look to their own family or friends for help because they do not trust you if they don’t know you.
Also people want to be independent and see you as being interfering rather then helpful so it is not easy these days living out the Christian life and I don’t suppose it ever is so you have to be prepared to be misunderstood.

People are just very complex and if there is a wrong way to take it, they will, and that is why I prefer to work through charities where you know your help is needed which makes for a more harmonious environment which is what I need myself right now.

  46. poohpity says:

You are so right Viv, we are not to compare ourselves with others but reading what Paul’s life was like that he was always doing things he knew was not right and not doing things that he knew he should and messing up often we find we do have very much in common. Just the same as many in bible were like; liars, murders, adulterers, cheats, deceivers, and sinners we share so much in common because we are all of the human race and there is nothing hidden in scripture about everyone’s many faults, failures, struggles, weaknesses and inabilities. Everyone has those things in their lives yet God showed us all so much grace. No one even in the bible are without flaws that is common to all mankind and every person God used had them since the beginning of mankind but He still can use us and more so when we acknowledge them.

  47. street says:

dear jeff been thinking we are all going through this thing called sanctification. none of us get to bypass it.
but we know He loves us dearly and will not let us crash and burn like we always have feared in the past, before an angry God.

been thinking of this righteousness that he provides for His children. what is it’s character or it’s depth. what is it and what is it not? i think of the prophets blanket on a cold long night. it was too short and too narrow. ouch! it like looking for your sin by going east and not finding it, then turning around and going the other way and not finding it. we weary ourselves out looking!

The Lord’s justice will dwell in the desert,
his righteousness live in the fertile field.

    The fruit of that righteousness will be peace;
its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.

the fertile field caught my eye in thinking of the good soil in the parable of the sower.
thinking it is good to struggle before God, but not with Him. jacob walked away with a limp and a blessing.
thinking he could have walked away with just the blessing. thinking grace does nothing for the unrighteous for they continue in unrighteousness, but grace given to the righteous produces fruit. thinking we can produce fruit even when we are suffering or do not even know all the questions or the answers. He really does more than we can think or ask.

  48. jeff1 says:

I think that is the problem Pooh, acknowledgeing them,I don’t believe that we always see our own flaws and it is only our closest family and friends that do and they are not always honest with us.

Most believers I know were brought up to keep the ten commandments and that meant each time you failed to keep any one of them you had committed a terrible sin.
I believe somewhere along the way I give up trying because I believed it was my weakness, it took me a long time to realize that most believers failed.

I spent the best part of my life believing God would condemn me to hell for my failures so you cannot imagine the relief I have today knowing that I had listened to false teaching.

Today false teaching is still widespread and I believe human failings are the problem. There is only one teacher, except He is much more than that to those of us who know the gospel but many are still being fed false teaching today, as has been throughout time and it has and still is turning as many away from God as it is to Him.

That is the one thing that makes me angry today how God is misunderstood because of our humanness. When will we own up to the fact that if God is misunderstood then we as His followers have failed Him.

Non believers or those who have been falsely taught are not responsible for God being misunderstood for they are not representing Him on earth so the failure lies with us.

Individually we may feel we are doing our bit but collectively it is just not good enough or this world would be a much better world than it is.

Christianity is failing because false teaching has divided Christians and non Christians do not notice any difference in our behaviour for we do more agonising over who is right then what is right.

If I have learned anything it is that God got it right for this world is just as in need of ‘Jesus’ today as it was in biblical times showing that history does repeat itself for it is also just as blind to the fact that it needs saved today as it did then!

When are all Christians going to accept that ‘Jesus’ died to save us all for we need saving from ourselves as much as we do our enemies.

  49. poohpity says:

God knows those who are truly seeking and searching for Him and He is as close as the first glimmer in the heart. It seems the Holy Spirit puts a desire in human beings heart, a place that desires to know God but many do not answer the call. They replace it thinking it is other things but God will get His message out there whatever it takes. He does not really seem to need us.

street, I am confused with how we have anything to do with producing fruit? I may not be understanding what you mean by grace producing fruit or us producing fruit.

  50. poohpity says:

Viv, do you think we can fail someone who knows everything, knows what we are thinking, knows what we are going to do? Yet He still sent His Son to show us that until this earth no longer exists we have been redeemed. He knows us better than we know ourselves and still feels we are worthy of His love because we are His creation made in His image.

  51. joycemb says:

Mart I’m thinking further of those who have helped to shape and redirect my outlook on life. I’m remembering my ‘favorite’ college prof that gently pointed out to me on one of my papers that my worldview was cynical-earthly-sensual and not Christian. That got me focusing on the gospel more than my circumstances. So grateful for him. It’s so easy to let circumstances cloud out the light sometimes.

  52. poohpity says:

We get disappointed in people because we expect more from them than they are able to be but I do not think we can ever disappoint God if I believe He is all knowing which I do. Get rid of expecting people to more than they are and disappointment will leave too or become less anyway.

  53. joycemb says:

My post at 6:40 was directed to Mart, not the forum.

  54. joycemb says:

Jesus said: “In your endurance you will gain your life”

Paul said: “To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.
    Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
    perseverance, character; and character, hope”.

Thinking of you Viv and all you have endured and are enduring. Hold fast to Him!

  55. SFDBWV says:

Good morning BTA land and people. Amazing as it is the temperature is 45 degrees with the prediction of it rising into the 50’s today and for the next few days with light rain. We still have 15 inches of compacted compressed snow on the ground and some serious ice on the shaded sides of the roof and house.

    This storm has tentacles…

In reading over the responses it seems very few if any of us has had a single person who dramatically lifted us up or changed our direction in life. It is more like the poem of the path in the woods that came to a fork, the author of which took the path less traveled.

In life we reach many forks in the road and at those times have people who influence our choices. Sometimes our choices are made for us by circumstances and all we can do is the best we can to continue to stand on our own two feet and keep facing the day. Sometimes there are those we need to even help us stand lift up our chins so we can face the day.

Be an encourager, not a discourager and you too may be that one person at that one time that someone needs.

In doing so you may find that you have found completeness in what all the laws of Moses required of you.

    Love.

    Steve

  56. joycemb says:

“My Hope is Built on Nothing Less”
    by Edward Mote, 1797-1874
    1. My hope is built on nothing less
    Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
    On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

    2. When darkness veils His lovely face,
    I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.
    On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

    3. His oath, His covenant, and blood
    Support me in the whelming flood;
When every earthly prop gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay.
    On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

    4. When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found,
    Clothed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne!
    On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

    Hymn #370
    The Lutheran Hymnal
    Text: 1 Timothy 1:1
Author: Edward Mote, c. 1834, cento
    Composer: John Stainer, 1873, arr.
    Tune: “Magdalen”

    My mentors are all speaking to me this morning;
Jeremiah said “The Lord is our righteousness”

Spurgeon says that no matter what we or others think or feel we are clothed in Christs’ righteousness.

    O. Chambers says that when we are faced with a difficult person to remind ourselves that they are perfect in Christ Jesus.

    I need these reminders often.

  57. jeff1 says:

Often, I find the most difficult person to live with is myself, but for my children who give me so much joy, hope and encouragement for the future.

When I look at my children, and see God working in them, I forget all my regrets, for I am reminded that God is still the living God and working through them as He has me.
My support for them gives me another chance to be encouraged in a brighter future to come and makes me realize that God never does give up on us but we sometimes give up on ourselves. With another generation hope is renewed as I see their God given gifts and praise God for His mercy and forgiveness as He continues to protect my children as myself and realize that God’s mercy is forever and ever. Amen. For I cannot out give God, for His generosity is eternal.

  58. joycemb says:

Viv I too find myself to be the most difficult person to live with – but then I remember how much God loves me!! He changes everything doesn’t He. I need that reminder to keep my eyes on Him as we all do at times. To be a child of the Father of our very souls is most precious I think. Most precious.

  59. jeff1 says:

Yes, Joyce, Precious and so very Amazing, and when I remain focused it becomes so clear, but it is I who muddy the waters, but to know God loves me is sometimes difficult to comprehend in my humanness and I need reminding that God’s love conquers all.

  60. joycemb says:

Well Viv then here’s a reminder for today; God loves you no matter how muddy the water!

  61. joycemb says:

Reminded of this older gospel song I used to sing, maybe you’ve heard it?

    Bigger Than Any Mountain

    CHORUS

Bigger than all my problems, Bigger than all my fears
God is bigger than any mountain that I can or cannot see
Bigger than all my questions, Bigger than anything
God is bigger than any mountain that I can or cannot see

    Verse 1

Bigger than all the shadows that fall across my back
God is bigger than any mountain that I can or cannot see
Bigger than all the confusion, Bigger than anything
God is bigger than any mountain that I can or cannot see

    Verse 2

Bigger than all the giants, fear and unbelief
God is bigger than any mountain I can or cannot see
Bigger than all my hangups, Bigger than anything
God is bigger than any mountain that I can or cannot see

  62. jeff1 says:

Would not remember all of the older songs from childhood but this one does not ring a bell so thank you for sharing.

I like the words so very encouraging.

  63. street says:

this verse is for poo in response to her question.

“You heavens above, rain down my righteousness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let righteousness flourish with it; I, the Lord, have created it.”

  64. street says:

this spoke to me today a little louder than the other things of today.

If I tell a righteous person that they will surely live, but then they trust in their righteousness and do evil, none of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered; they will die for the evil they have done.

thinking in Romans their are none righteous.

  65. poohpity says:

street, still confused. I always thought it was the Holy Spirit that produced the fruit in our lives as well as sealing us with the righteousness of Christ. It is His righteousness and His fruit but it us who makes the choice to live(abide) in it.

  66. street says:

poo said,”it us who makes the choice to live(abide) in it.”

did you chose God or did He chose you?

i think you were fine till you added “but”

paul talks in Romans about, esau and jacob; ishmael and issac; and finally pharaoh.

i think God chose us to serve Him. better benefits.

thinking we were all sinners, but some chose to make a righteousness for themselves. paul was saying under moses the righteous shall live by the law. i am thinking not many are still alive and walking on the earth today by keeping the law. yet abraham issac and jacob are still alive to God when He spoke to moses. paul said they were living because they believed God.

James talks about a work that is manifested because of faith. this is a work of God. the israel believed God and put blood on their doors. God did not chose to tell the egyptians. they were hardened. even after they left they lost their entire military in the red sea. so much for earning it.

i have to admit israel suffered staggering loses in the desert because of disobedience. i pray we would love.

John 14:15 “If you love me, keep my commands.

2 Corinthians 12:15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well. If I love you more, will you love me less?

i think this love changes everything.

  67. poohpity says:

street, to your first question “did you chose God or did He chose you” the answer to that seems to be both. God wants all people to come to Him but few make that choice to follow Him. That still does not answer the question about who you think produces the fruit in our lives. The “but” about living in close union with the Spirit is the “but” if you do not live close to the Lord connected to the vine then the branch can do nothing on it’s own.(John 15:4-5)

We can not make righteousness on our own that is from Christ living inside us. It is His righteousness that makes us righteous. The “but” in that is that one has to believe. Nothing of God is anything we can do for ourselves.(Romans 3:22 NIV; Romans 10:4)

If one loves God then live in a close relationship with Him and yes His love changes everything.

  68. poohpity says:

One does not seem to have the ability to reflect something that is not within them to reflect. To reflect God’s love, grace or mercy one has to know it for themselves. You can not give away something you do not have.

  69. poohpity says:

The important part is not knowing scripture but knowing the One who inspired it, then it makes much more sense as one experiences Him in their life.

  70. street says:

poo said,”That still does not answer the question about who you think produces the fruit in our lives. The “but” about living in close union with the Spirit is the “but” if you do not live close to the Lord connected to the vine then the branch can do nothing on it’s own.(John 15:4-5)”

    how did Jesus bear fruit?

  71. poohpity says:

street, how did Jesus bear fruit? Really? He is the source of the fruit. Are you comparing Jesus in some way to us? God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are One. No comparison at all, in anyway, no how. Blasphemy!!

  72. street says:

dear poo you might want to review the book of Philippians.

gee poo i do hope people will see Christ in us. isn’t that the point of His coming to redeem sinful man so we do not have to continue like the devil?

  73. jeff1 says:

It is God’s plan how He gathers up His flock, ours not to reason why, ours but to do and die.

God has to work mysteriously because of evil and only asks us to trust Him, not to question His reasons.

  74. jeff1 says:

    The Master’s Way Poem

Not ours to know the reason why unanswered is our prayer,
But ours to wait for God’s own time to lift the cross we bear.

Not ours to know the reason why from loved ones we must part,
But ours to live in faith and hope, through bleeding be the heart.

Not ours to know the reason why this anguish, strife and pain.
But ours to know a crown of thorns, Thy grace for us to gain.

    A cross, a bleeding heart, a crown,
    What greater gifts are given?
Be still my heart, and mummur not, these are the keys to heaven.

‘Tis ours to know the better part, whereby a crown is won,
Then loving God I ask not why, “Thy will, not mine, be done.”

Yea, Thy way, Lord, not mine, I pray; I give to Thee my will,
And humbly seek Thy grace and aid, this better part to fill.

It was not always thus with me, I loved my way the best, But that is past, Thy way is mine, in it alone is rest.

  75. Regina says:

    Good Evening, All
Pray all is well in your lives… I’m doing great, all things considered. Have only read the intro comment for this blog topic, and the question that Mart asked is easy for me to answer… My (current, and I can easily say forever) Pastor has had the most profound effect on my life (outside of my LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ)! I’m a better person, I have more discipline, self control, courage, understanding, compassion and a more intimate relationship with the LORD after having sat under his tutelage for 15 years (minus for 4 sporadic years in college pursuing an undergrad degree). I’m so truly blessed to be a part of the ministry that he oversees. Would write more, but I have to make an important phone call.

A warm 73 degrees in my neck of the woods…

    LOVE to all,
    Regina

  76. poohpity says:

street, good advice but what has that to do with your comment? Never mind now because it is as clear as mud we are not going in the same direction.

  77. poohpity says:

    Thank you street good advice.

  78. street says:

mart said,”who would be the pure to whom He would show Himself pure, and the devious to whom He would show Himself shrewd?”

yes poo i am comparing Jesus to us because He is a man, one of us. Who did Jesus serve? How did He serve?
could Jesus bear fruit, in sinful man, without being the lamb of God?

can anything dead bear fruit on it’s own?

we might be talking about the same thing, but differ in language.

the point i am trying to make is in order to bear fruit you must die and be planted. the body that comes up out of the soil is not the same as the body that is planted. abraham consider himself good as dead and believed God would give him a son. His faith in God and His Word bore fruit. abraham did not see all the promises fulfilled, but he will and he will get the land that was promised to him.

we are made alive in Christ.

  79. foreverblessed says:

Thanks you Jeff, that was lovely.
I have just been reading 1 John 4:19

“We love, because He first lived us”.

In the bible commentary, MacLaren’s Exposition, there is a beautifull ‘sermon’ on just that one verse.
You can find it in biblehub, that goes with a com.

If we realise the love God has for us, the love shown in Christ Jesus, then our hearts are changed, and our will is changed, and falls in line with God’s will, then the words of Augustine are ours: Love and do what you will
As our will has become the same as His will.
I believe that God wants us to be totally real and truthfull. That our will is not hesistantly His, that deep down we want it differently. But that in living with God in Christ we see the result of His Ways, ( things like the beautitudes- do good to those who hate you, love your enemies, as Jesus died while we were still sinners.
Anyway, what I wanted to say, is that then the fruits we produceren, are totally His and also ours as well, as we ourselves want the same as God is, and God is love.
God does not want will-less puppets on a string.
We love because He first loved us.

  80. poohpity says:

Gal 5:22 NLT teaches that it is the results of the Spirit that lives in us that produces fruit. A person on their own is unable to do this, not by their will or by their choice. We are not puppets we first have to believe that is our freedom of choice in who Jesus is, what He has done and what He will do. That is the very milk of our belief without that there is no salvation.

Jesus was not only a man like us, He was fully God as well that is why there is no comparison. John 1:1-5 NLT

  81. foreverblessed says:

Just a side note, last week I wrote something about:

    Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Then after that I started to read Psalm 71, which is on the reading scedule of the combined protestant churches this week.
    And it said:

    Turn Your ear to me.

    Psalm 71:2(NIV)
I found that a message from God, the Holyy Spirit, saying, you may be real, when you are down, turn it around, ask for Me!

  82. joycemb says:

    Good morning all,

My morning meditation was on Heb. 12;11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening–it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. NLT

Then as I read your post, Regina, it reminded me of the purpose of spiritual mentoring which is training in righteousness. We do have our part to do, yet it is God that ultimately creates the righteousness that comes from us. How great He is! And what a paradox the flesh and the spirit yet how they work together to create God’s will on earth. wow!

  83. street says:

poo said,”Jesus was not only a man like us, He was fully God as well that is why there is no comparison. John 1:1-5 NLT”

Jesus served in Spirit and truth and did not fail one time. He served perfectly and without any blemish.

we are to serve in like manner in Spirit and truth.
He has given us His Spirit, the Holy Spirit of the God Head we call the Trinity, to live in us. living in us, flesh, in like manner. this is done by the blood of Christ. woe to us if we do not remain Holy for we will be most miserable creatures if we do. i am convinced nothing can separate us from this cleansing work of God by the blood of Christ.

6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. John 1:6-10

my point is there there is a relationship between Jesus and the saints, and the flesh and the Spirit.

    we are “like” Him!

remember satan’s lie he said the day you eat the fruit you will be like God. the truth was we became like satan.

Thank you God for saving us from such a wretched end.

thank you joycemb for Romans 12:11

  84. joycemb says:

oops wrong book, I shared Hebrews 12:11. But Romans 12:11 is very encouraging!

  85. street says:

    that’s funny joycemb
makes me think of paul’s zeal on the road to damascus.
He always comes to His children when they need Him.
do not grow weary or by dismayed.

fervent having or showing great warmth or intensity of spirit, feeling, enthusiasm, etc.; ardent:

  86. poohpity says:

street said, “Jesus ‘served’ in Spirit and truth and did not fail one time.” but Jesus ‘was’ the Spirit(2 Cor 3:17) and Truth(John 8:31-32)

  87. poohpity says:

    John 10:30

  88. street says:

The Person Who Changed My Life

i wonder if we would think of the Holy Spirit in this way?

    He is so stealthy.

  89. poohpity says:

I do think of the Holy Spirit that way (i.e. He does the changing in us) and I do believe that He brings folks into our lives as Teacher’s aids for that process. :-)

  90. street says:

dear poo if i am as wretched as i understand myself to be, would i accept another person cut from the same fabric? would i accept some people and reject others based on my own choice? i really don’t think He needs our help, just our trust and obedience. that is a lot easier when the flesh is crucified daily. just thinking and getting myself in trouble again.

  91. jeff1 says:

I believe the ‘Holy Spirit’ does change me, when I allow it, but my mind is where the difficulty lies, for I must not let it wander, and it is there that my troubles begin and end.

I inherited mental illness from my mother and my brother and it is a battle they did not won in their lifetime and while I live a normal life on medication I still struggle in my mind.

My family and friends are the people in my life whom I have become dependent on and they encourage me to continue and as they too have their own demons they empathise with me in struggling.

It is Satan who tries to tell me God will leave me, but it is God who speaks to my heart, and tells me, He will be with me forever, and I long for the day, when Satan’s lies, no longer can get into my mind, and steal my joy in knowing that God’s loves me always, but that may not be until God calls me to my heavenly home so until then it is good to have others like yourselves to help me on my journey.

Friends are like stars they twinkle in our heart. Yes, thank God, for the good people who help us on our way,and thank Him for the difficult people who learn us patience and endurance and awake us to our own shortcomings which I can so easily overlook in myself while I have been focusing on others shortcomings. God is always teaching us when we open our minds and hearts and listen.

I truly believe that God wants to change me to be a better person and that is why I want God to do the changing in me and no one else.

  92. poohpity says:

Amen, Viv God is the best at changing us and yes true friends do help along the way. I like how you put it “they twinkle in our heart”.
