Under Fire

DSC01526How do the Scriptures work for us in the declared war with our spiritual enemy?

Is our challenge to do as Jesus did? When tempted— either to prove himself, or to negotiate a settlement for the world— he responded three times with quotes of the Jewish Scriptures (Luke 4:1-13).

I’ve often thought about how skillfully Jesus used the Scriptures. Can be intimidating to say the least. Was our Lord indicating by his example that we need to be just as insightful in our ability to reach into the inspired volumes of the history of Israel to find just the right text for the moment?

If so, we can see why it’s so important to rely on the same Spirit our Lord was trusting. Who among us feels ready for such a challenge?

So for a long time I assumed that trusting God for such understanding and use of Scripture is what is needed for us to think clearly under fire. After all, the Apostle Paul later seemed to put the finishing touches on what it takes to win the battle for our minds and hearts when he said, “Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph 6:17). I took for granted that, in referring to the word of God, Paul was saying that we need to learn to use the Scriptures as Jesus did to avoid defeat.

What I have since found surprising is that many students of the Bible see more than a reference to Scripture when Paul refers to “the word.” Instead, many have noted that unless he specifically refers to “the written Scriptures” he usually is referring to what the Scriptures together point to—the message and good news of the Gospel of Christ. For example, in the first chapter of this same letter to the Ephesians, Paul writes, of Christ, “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Eph 1:13).

What’s the difference? Seems to me that if Paul is referring to the message of or about Christ, then “the sword of the Spirit” is not just a God-given ability to skillfully use the Scriptures. Instead, we wage war against our enemy by being able to rely on the message and good news of what Christ has won for us.

In my mind that has made a big difference in the way I read and use the Bible— under fire.

Note: For example, here is a suggested explanation on Ephesians 6:17 from the Word Biblical Commentary. “When the Christian soldier wields the sword of the word, it is not first of all the word of judgment but the good news of salvation. ῥῆμα here, not λόγος, refers to the gospel (cf. also 5:26; Rom 10:18; 1 Pet 1:25). This is “the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation” (1:13), “the gospel of peace” (6:15).”

Good morning, Mart. Are you saying we should fight remembering what we know, that Jesus has already won the battle?

  2. Mart DeHaan says:

Yes, It sounds simplistic, but there is no end to the implications of the good news.

  3. SFDBWV says:

Is there a “Truth” written beyond the “Written Word”?

I have to say that any generalization or paraphrasing of Scripture is dangerous theology and the scale of measuring it is simple; does it conflict with what the Scripture says?

It is overstated that Satan quoted Scripture, but he did so in an attempt to tempt Jesus into showing His hand before His time as well as fulfilling what the Scriptures had already said about the Messiah.

People use Scripture incorrectly all the time in an effort to make some erroneous point or as a weapon to threaten someone into accepting their erroneous misunderstanding of it.

Jesus fulfills the OT law and is the embodiment of the Written Word, but He himself says that, that does not do away with the law only that it is fulfilled, He still lives and still fulfills its need for a sacrificial Lamb.

His sacrifice is for our ability to be reunited with God; murder is still murder, idolatry is still idolatry, sin is still sin.

The Gospel (Good News) is that we have more than a pardon for our sin, someone took our place and our punishment instead of us.

This changes nothing as far as what the precepts for living God gave in the Scripture. If you believe that the Writers of the New Testament were also inspired by God then there is further explanation on several subjects, but none that relives us of living a clean wholesome life, only that when we fail our failures are covered by the blood of Christ.

Sorry I came in late to this new posting and have little time to write. It is 34 degrees with 3 inches of snow still on the ground after a couple days of rain and 40-50 degree weather.

This is exactly what we are studying in my bible study right now. Our battle is not against each other but against the enemy who wages war against us so that we do not know who we are in Christ, who God really is, doing everything in it is power to turn us away from God or learning about God so we live a defeated, disappointed, disillusioned, unproductive, ineffective life. Rather than an abundant, joy filled, victorious, full and free life in Christ Jesus.

This will be an interesting discussion looking forward to it.

  5. oneg2dblu says:

Steve… I agree with your point about how dangerous it can be to generalize scripture into an amalgamation, where scripture itself, warns us not to such.
For a reason, or topic as this one could go anywhere and justify almost anything we want to spin it into.
If I remember correctly, when Christ was tempted directly by Satan, He used scripture word for word, He did not paraphrase.
Where could Satan be more cunning and effective than to put himself right into the family/brotherhood of the church and destroy it from the inside out?
    “Did God really say?”
    Just Thinking…

  6. SFDBWV says:

Gary I could not agree more. Not only are there wolves in sheep’s clothing, but they sadly are too often positioned in leadership positions.

And just as an influential person can influence others, the spirit of the anti-christ can and has influenced many throughout the ages, even before the Christ was born.

It is against that spirit and its affiliated spirits that we do battle against daily, and just as Mart has suggested sometimes all we have to do is acknowledge that Jesus has already won the war; we need just to claim it when confronted with such spirits.

The Gospel is acknowledgement of victory, just as that old hymn says, “there is victory in Jesus”.

Another old hymn I love is “It is Finished” “the battle is over, it is finished there will be no more war, it is finished the conflict of the ages, it is finished and Jesus is Lord.”

  7. poohpity says:

Gary, wouldn’t that be an erroneous premise? Since we know that Jesus was with God from the beginning(John 1:1) then the very word’s that Jesus spoke like; Luke 4:4 goes along with Deuteronomy 8:3; Luke 4:8 along with Deut 6:13 came directly from the source.

Satan can put himself in the middle of those who say they believe by distracting and distorting the truth but to those who know the Truth and have been made aware of the enemies schemes knowing they can use the defense weapon of the word to be able to identify when they are being lead astray. Claim the victory they have in Jesus and follow Him only.

However if one is not familiar with the way the enemy fights or the weapons he uses they have no actionable intel when confronted in the struggle and it is found in the bible how the enemy works. We have been forewarned and given the spiritual armor we need as well as the weapons to stand firm.

  8. poohpity says:

Satan can and does use anyone even those who say they follow Jesus for instance Peter. Peter was thinking the way of man not of the things of God, His plan and purposes. (Matt 16:23) Satan entices people away from God to concentrate on what they think they know rather than seeking God’s will and ways.

  9. remarutho says:

Good Morning Mart & Friends —

It seems to me this topic, “Under Fire,” is where the chariot wheel meets the cobble stones. :o) When it comes to skillfully quoting Scripture, Mart, you wrote:

“Instead, we wage war against our enemy by being able to rely on the message and good news of what Christ has won for us.
In my mind that has made a big difference in the way I read and use the Bible — under fire.”

So, what’s the difference between focusing on the exact quote from the Bible and relying on the message? Under fire, we may think we are confronting persons who do not believe in the Book being quoted. The world’s question is, “Do you still believe in that old collection of myths?”

But we are actually confronting the ancient serpent who sows doubt, confusion and humiliation. The evil one wants us to be quiet, or deny our own experience of Christ’s atonement.

Our armor is formed, it seems to me, from our personal experience of trusting in Jesus and in the work He has accomplished. Jesus-followers overcome the accuser “because of
    1) the blood of the Lamb
2)and because of the word of their testimony,
    3) and they do not love their life even when faced with death.”

A Jesus-follower “has died and his/her life is hidden with Christ in God, who is our life.” We stand on ground already taken, owned and occupied by Jesus Christ — and His victory stands tall when we rely on Him. His glory, not ours, is revealed in the rhema, not the logos, under fire.

    Blessings all day,
    Maru

BTW, Our Daily Bread for today is a good one — and the recommended teaching on living in a pluralistic society can be read online for free. (“Truth with Love” by Adjith Fernando)

More and more we speak our witness of Jesus among people with many different religions and spirituality — most being Godless, with no intention of seeking to know Him. Perhaps, as the preacher says, you will be the only Bible some people will ever read or hear. Maru

  11. joycemb says:

Just yesterday I read something from another blogger I’ve been thinking about. He asked if our retelling of scripture causes division or brings light. So Mart your post today encourages me to continue to think about this and ask myself where I can ‘tweak’ my presentation of the Good News both verbally and without words. It’s a great challenge!

  12. street says:

dear mart i love the expression on the soldiers face in the pic. i read through what you wrote and the comments so far, will have to explore more before commenting. thanks!

one comment that came to mind as i was thinking and looking up words in the dictionary. is the scene in a play made up it my mind. thinking of two sowers on stage sowing seed. the one sower becomes indignant at the other sower doing what He does best and throws a fist full of seeds at the other sower. the sower continues on unabated. the indignant sower attach the sower and strangles to other sower to death. after killing the other sower he clenches his fist in triumph. then goes about throwing seed into the audience before leaving stage.

  13. phpatato says:

Steve you said “I have to say that any generalization or paraphrasing of Scripture is dangerous theology and the scale of measuring it is simple; does it conflict with what the Scripture says?”

To me, that depends on which version of Scripture you use for measuring. I so agree that generalization or paraphrasing is so very dangerous.

I am of the position that the various modern day Bible translations have gone too far in their quest to simplify by paraphrasing or rewording the Bible to make it easier for us to understand. I have set aside modern day translations of the Bible that I have to use almost exclusively the King James Version. I only revert to the NIV if I find a passage confusing, of course hoping that the verse I am having trouble with is actually there when I look.

I don’t know, but to me, rendering a verse from the King James Bible – example: Matthew 18:11 – as only a footnote at the bottom of the page (in small print) in the NIV as **Some manuscripts include here the words of Luke 19:10**, or worse yet to have **NO RESULTS FOUND** in popular versions such as NLT and ESV is flirting with danger. One has to question, what else is missing from these translations? Was that verse actually God-inspired and supposed to be included in His Word for us to read?

Mart, “we wage war against our enemy by being able to rely on the message and good news of what Christ has won for us.” What happens when the Good News we are to rely on isn’t written in the Message that God has given to us?????

Am I making any sense? I have had several disruptions this morning so my thoughts may be confusing.

  14. street says:

How do the Scriptures work for us in the declared war with our spiritual enemy?

    they work for our rest.

  15. street says:

mart said,”Was our Lord indicating by his example that we need to be just as insightful in our ability to reach into the inspired volumes of the history of Israel to find just the right text for the moment?”

seem to me Jesus response was a revelation to what Jesus was looking at. similar as cold symptoms in relation to a cold. He was responding to Who He saw not what circumstances He was in. He was not looking at the devil. the pharisees were looking at the same scriptures, but what they saw was not what Jesus saw.

  16. street says:

thinking we need to put on the armor because we are going to take a beating from the devil.

  17. street says:

steve said,”Is there a “Truth” written beyond the “Written Word”?

I have to say that any generalization or paraphrasing of Scripture is dangerous theology and the scale of measuring it is simple; does it conflict with what the Scripture says?”

there is a Truth beyond the written word. of coarse there is, it’s called the Author!

when is the law done away with? when we come of age at the appointed time set by the guardian. it is impossible for the law to be done away with til this happens.

  18. street says:

10 Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. 2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 3 For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

5 For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness. 6 But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), 7 or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).” 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, [f]resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

  19. foreverblessed says:

Phpatato, is that such a problem? The NIV states tgat some manuscripts have v11. But that doesn’t change much the meaning of the bible.
look Luke19:10 up in the biblehub, that goes with a com, choose INT, that stands for interlineair, there you van read the original greek wording, with translation.
I see that it says: mankind. Not the lost.

Anyway, these are minor details, the overall message doesn’t change.
If you do not see that the overall message of the bible, while I am writing, it seems to me that it is, Luke 19:10!
But if you do not see that, you might see it as a book of rules,

Isn’t that message of salvation, that has to grow on us, the ones that grew up in church, and were more busy with keeping the commandments ( not that we should break them),
But to see the overall vision: Salvation!

Now, when I study Psalms, I more and more see Salvation.

Once I stated in an oecominical church service, that Psalm 119 is about Jesus, the Alpha and Omega, and all the alphabaticals in between. One man turned to me and said: that is the art of – reading into- and that is not allowed.
It does not literally say so.
So if it is not literally there, isn’t it there?

  20. foreverblessed says:

Phpatato, I do not mean that you do not see the overall message of the bible, but I meant – you- in general.

  21. oneg2dblu says:

pooh says… “Gary, wouldn’t that be an erroneous premise?”
Do you ask this of the premise that generalizations could be dangerous, or, the most cunning and effective works of Satan would be done right within the family/brotherhood?
Like Eve giving to her family/mate, his first hit of the good looking and tasting fruit from the tree of Good and Evil?
As Steve and others here would agree, You should not get your Doctrine from a Paraphrase, it must first align without conflict with the original Word of God, where it gets its flawless fail safe authority.
Any other source, is just “an” other source.
As Paul instructed the early church, we are to only follow that original gospel which he first spoke of and taught.
We are not to be adding other things, or laws, or dismissing things either, using my own words.
“Actionable Intel” goes, anyone who has the Holy Spirit living in them, and has learned to listen to the promptings given them, or has been warned, or Awakened by the Spirit, ready, prepared to battle, if they will just obey, “Put on the Armor of God daily.”
    Would you agree?

  22. foreverblessed says:

Sorry, I was wrong, when you look up Matthew 18:11, interlineair in the biblehub you will find – mankind-.
When you look up Luke 19:10 it says indeed, save that which was lost.

  23. foreverblessed says:

Came indeed the Son of man to seek and to save that having been lost

Indeed, this is a profound message of the bible.
    And for me too.
    It also says, to seek…

  24. jeff1 says:

Christians do use scripture wrongly and for that reason it is less effective in our modern world. It divides Christians and that only helps to advance the beliefs of those opposed.

We must unite as Christians in an ever growing hostile world if we are to be taken seriously for it is our differences that non believers are critical of, for they say we cannot agree ourselves. We need to get back to what unites us and that is ‘Jesus Christ’ otherwise we are shooting ourselves in the foot and there is no point in complaining about it.

What is more important that ‘Jesus’ died to save mankind or that we agree on scripture. I for one, has had my faith strengthened, through examining my heart, when the Holy Spirit prompt me that the hatred in it was wrong.

It is more important that my heart is right with God otherwise words are just words with no real meaning of what the truth of the gospel is.

The truth of the gospel is what is missing in this modern world and that is because of confusion caused by Christians misquoting the bible and not taking responsibility for their words.

‘Jesus’ died to save sinners and many are still unaware because of false teaching but it is God who will once more have to intervene because man is too stubborn too admit his folly.

We talk of being faithful to God, and that is just what it amounts to talk but in the end it is God who remains faithful to us.

The men who left an impact on my faith journey where not those who preached to me but those who led Godly lives by their treatment of others irrespective of their culture, class or religion.

The reality was there where few of them which makes me believe that it is the Holy Spirit that changes us internally before we are changed externally and are of any real use to God.

  25. phpatato says:

    Forever

“is that such a problem?” Yes, personally for me, I do see that as a problem. I gave one instance of how the newer translations give me concerns. There are several more omitted verses and phrases in modern translations that I could cite.

Matthew 18:11 – For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. KJV

With that verse being completely omitted in the New Living Translation (NLT) and the English Standard Version (ESV), does that not diminish the very purpose of what Christ came to do? That’s a pretty important purpose in my eyes and one that shouldn’t be omitted from God’s very own Word.

And I do realize that the argument will be whether it was Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek text that was used for the translations. For me, there are 66 books chosen by God to be His Holy Bible. Not 65 or 67 books. With that, each verse in those books is God-inspired. All of them. It is not up to man or a bunch of men to decide what verses to omit just so that it is easier for modern day man to understand.

So Forever, I love you to bits, but we will have to agree to disagree on your statement “Anyway, these are minor details, the overall message doesn’t change.” In my mind, the overall message does change and has changed.

May God bless and keep you

    Pat xo

  26. oneg2dblu says:

jeff1… I strongly believe that before any misquoting of scripture is recognized by believers, or unbelievers for that matter, or any thinking that Christians who point at other Christians or other religions, are to be found guilty for lost Souls, or all those being outside the loop.

Is it not His Word that says, all unbelievers come with an automatic disbelief or rejection built in to their sin nature from birth, because all are found by scripture to be Enemies of God first?

So, I do not share your crediting any ill spoken church at large, or their misguided wayward followers alone, for ruining all others possible chances for the rest of the world to find any real salvation, or any right way or system, outside of God’s calling or election.

And then, it is only upon each one being called, and by their own hearing and confession, and their acceptance to be changed by God, for they will continue to be rejected as well, until they do.

But, if God elects to use even the most undesirable things in this world to bring others into relationship with Him, I’m on board with that.

I’m not challenging your faith here, or your doctrine, or your religion, or your beliefs, only your words.

I’m just not ready to accuse the church, or any mis-spoken Pastor, or scriptures, for all the ills of this world and the darkened souls that do not yet accept God.

I wish I could say Billy Grahm, or any other great preachers or leaders called and used by God never had an impact on my life, but, I can’t in all honesty attribute my finding any real faith in this world or its followers, but, only through those who chose to use and share God’s spoken words.

From my earliest memories of Sunday School teachers and their lessons, and even in today’s ODB teaching, my faith has been constantly shaped for Eternity with Him, and by those who will continue to share His Message.

Yes, the world has modeled and taught me many of its things as well, but those things are better served in the dark, or under the table, if you will, and to not be spoken of here.

All our paths are different, and yet God alone knows in whom He selects, He also calls, to be His.

“Faith comes by Hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”

Whomever God chose to speak into my life, and the list is very, very, long, they being a multitude, do I hold as captive to changing my life through the faith found in the hearing his word.

    Gary

  27. bubbles says:

Oh, dear, Mart. I am sorry. I never intended to say what you were saying was simplistic. I am so sorry.

  28. poohpity says:

It is OK to be simplistic. God doesn’t seem to make things hard to understand it is all very simple however human beings tend to make things hard, twist things and cause heavy burdens. I often wonder if that is not an influence of the adversary also, taking something so wonderful and beautiful as God’s word and making it antagonistic.(Col 2:8-9 NIV)

Hey Gary where did you copy that from?

  29. poohpity says:

This is just me personally but I think that any translation one chooses to read whether it is for ease of reading or whatever just that they read it is the most important thing. God guides us along into His Truths. The only reason I say this is because after reading many versions God gets His point across so why not make it a simple read to enjoy.

  30. foreverblessed says:

Pat, you love me to bits! Thats awesome, that makes my heart glad! I love you too.
About versions of the bible: Matthew 6:13 is another one.
My inlaws are cathlic, and they always prayed the Lords prayer before and after dinner, but left out the last part:
For your is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

Much later in life I found out that indeed, these lines were not in the older manuscript, they were added in later ones.

So the cathlics were not wrong. But personally I cannot miss that last line.
Nowadays I believe cathlics say them too.

  31. SFDBWV says:

Good morning all believers in that Jesus of Nazareth is Lord. That he was born of the Virgin Mary, conceived by the Holy Spirit, was crucified died and was resurrected by His own power and authority, and is in fact God.

That by His death He satisfied the conditions of the Law, kept God Holy and as a substitute for all of our sins through Him we all are able to be reunited in fellowship with God the Father.

It is my understanding that everything else we may read from Scripture is to give foundation to the above statement as well as feed the nurturing condition of our own spirit and give substance to our faith.

Any challenge to my above statement of faith in who Jesus is would be met with an immediate recognition of just that, a challenge to my faith.

But the spirit of the anti-christ or if you prefer the spirit of Satan is not always so obvious. Instead of a frontal attack he uses a more subtle approach by chipping away little by little of what “God hath said” in order to confuse, weaken and, as he hopes, to cause doubt leading to a loss of faith and loss of belief.

The very birth of the Messiah was met with attempts to keep Him from being born from the Garden of Eden to the stable in Bethlehem.

The anti-christ doesn’t know everything. He just knows enough to cause mischief and one of his best tools is confusion and what better place to sew confusion than within the very thread of the “written” Word of God.

The Church has been under attack since its inception and is what makes these early letters and writing from the Apostilles so very vital to our understanding of our faith, as well as the unbroken thread of the Torah which was given renewed credibility by the discovery of the “Dead Sea Scrolls” in 1948. The same year Israel regained its Homeland.

Evil intentions has had several thousand years to attack the written Word of God and over two thousand years to challenge the writings of the Gospels and that of the New Testament, but nothing compared to the past 50 plus years as the attacks have grown in character and in worldwide reach because of the increase in worldwide communication.

As the Scripture states and Gary has again offered, “faith comes by hearing”. If when we read a different rendition of the Word of God than one we have accepted as “truth”, we are then to “hear” whether it is acceptable as truth from the Holy Spirit within our being or not.

If there is a red flag that comes up within our relationship with God concerning the subtle changing of a word of Scripture then we are warned that there is mischief afoot.

If we push past the initial warning and decide to go with the world’s acceptance because it may sound better or be politically correct to do so, or even so that we are accepted by our peers we are guilty of not listening to the Holy Spirit.

The more we do that the quieter and fainter the voice of God sounds within our hearts and we are in danger of not hearing His voice again out of choice.

Presently I use two Bibles as an English speaking person. The King James is primary and “The New American Bible for Catholics” is for added study and in some cases added explanation. If needed I also have a Concordance. Reading Scripture should go along with meditation, but does not replace one on one prayer with God.

As long as 30 years ago Matthew’s mother, Rita, my first wife got me a special Bible with 4 translations on each page of the Bible. The very stark difference between the translations as well as misuse of “quickie” translations caused me to back up to the King James and use others as only an aid in the process of studying.

In Job we learn of two animals that have no real modern recognition, some modern translations try to put a known animal in the place of these two beasts just for recognition purpose. This is a red flag and one not to be taken lightly. The animals I speak of is Leviathan and Behemoth.

Put on the full armor of God daily because you are under attack daily, especially by those pseudo-christians who can’t stand it if you just won’t agree with them.

21 degrees and snow this morning.

  32. tracey5tgbtg says:

Love this post Mart, I think it is very important to dwell upon and know the incredible good news. This good news strengthens us as we daily wage war against the enemy who comes against us with fear, doubt, worry and condemnation.

Mart, you said: “Instead, we wage war against our enemy by being able to rely on the message and good news of what Christ has won for us.”

This morning, while reading my Bible I read in Romans 8:31-35, “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?”

These verses seemed to stress over the point I believed you to be making. I will repeat again the words that hold so much hope for me. “It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one.”

This is good news that we fight against the enemy with: “Christ Jesus who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?”

  33. oneg2dblu says:

Good day all… It is my belief that when God placed eternity in the hearts of men, He did it to bless or please both of us.
For He is a, “Good, Good Father.”
I not being the sharpest tool in the box, prefer to get my inspired need for information from many different bibles, student bibles, cross reference bibles, bibles with helps, and paraphrases, and yes, concordances as well.
They all help to shine the light on what many of us so diligently pursue, yet, as Steve has said, that red flag, or as my doctor friend says, “the cardinal,” as sent by the Holy Spirit presents itself as a warning for our protection.
So, freely read on from many versions knowing your will not be tempted beyond what you can bear, and when you are tempted God will provide you a way out from under any attack, if you just listen and obey that still small voice.

    Gary says:

So, I do not share your crediting any ill spoken church at large, or their misguided followers alone, for ruining all others chances for the rest of the world to find Salvation, or any right way or system, outside God’s calling or election.

I do not believe that it matters that we differ on our belief of who is to blame for people turning away from God because God is so much more in charge of our Salvation than you and I are.

I am simply making the point that those who know God by the word (those who have come to Him by biblical teaching) and those God speaks to by the Spirit, nature should unite as believers or else non believers will become more discouraged for they see us as not trying to share the truth of the gospel but more interested on who is right about what the bible says.

We need to sort out what is wrong among believers before non believers will take us seriously and if we cannot agree on whom Jesus died to save then how can we convince others.

The difference, in you, and I, Gary, is that you have divided yourself from those in this world, whom you see as unsaved, because they have not by word of mouth, accepted Jesus as Saviour.

I,on the other hand, look at them as saved but unaware because of false teaching or lack of knowledge of God due to cultural differences.

What I am trying to say is that I know people who do not believe in God and yet I know they have His indwelling spirit but because of false teaching are unaware of it!

Good Morning Mart & Friends —

The photo with this post, Mart, looks very much like Don Quixote. Don Quixote looks foolish because he defends an ancient code of chivalry. So, though he may be a fool, he is a sincere and passionate fool. There is a tear trickling as we laugh at him jousting with the windmill — vigorously defending king, nation and lady fair against a threat that does not exist.

Can it be the body of Christ has taken a turn back toward defending the faith, when the Lord is moving forward to implant the Good News of Jesus in hearts by ways that are in the flow of this time and place? Just asking.

    Blessings,

  36. poohpity says:

It seems another weapon of the enemy is the bible that gathers dust no matter what translation it is or putting a critical spirit in us so that we miss gathering together in churches. The Lord warned us that while we are here on this earth that the adversary will continue in a war to distract us from growing closer to the Lord. He seeks to destroy our relationship with God, steal our joy and render us useless for the kingdom.

I guess that is why the spiritual armor is so useful. Like Mart was saying when attacked if we have girded our loins with truth then when things happen we have a precise promise from scripture to use as a weapon and of course not as well as Jesus used the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God but that does not stop us from praying for His mighty help because the battle does belong to Jesus. But Satan can even bait us that God is not listening to our prayers or that God’s intentions are not good so we get discouraged and stop praying, reading His Word or going to church.

  37. poohpity says:

Job 1:17 reminds us that Satan roams all over seeking to destroy. Found in Mark Jesus reminds us that Satan has the ability to snatch the word from us in doubt and unbelief(Mark 4:15). Paul teaches us we have to know the schemes of the adversary so we are not outwitted (2 Cor 2:11). He also reminds us to stand firm in the Lord and be delivered (2 Tim 4:17; 1 Peter 5:8; Eph 6:10).

It seems during any military campaign people learn about the enemy and what they are facing so they can have a battle plan. God has given us plenty of intel about the enemy and the very things we need to not allow him to defeat us. It is very interesting to be aware so we are not caught off guard and can identify when we are under attack.

The closer the believer is growing to the Lord the stronger the attacks with big targets on our backs and minds because why attack someone that is already apathetic, disinterested, disengaged, discouraged, who does not pray or go to church or read the bible the enemy has already won in those cases. But it does not have to continue that way after having a “wake up” call.

  38. poohpity says:

ooops that was Job 1:7 not 17

  39. jeff1 says:

The only person I see as stopping me growing closer to the Lord is myself. I let false beliefs and wrong thinking get in the way.

The adversary cannot distract you unless you wander from the truth and even when that happened God saved me from myself.

God has been with me through war, brothers mental illness mothers illness mental/cancer, fathers cancer, martial keeps ration my own mental illness.

The only one who can allow Satan access to your mind/heart is yourself. My friend, whom I relied on when I was unwell, told me, when I became afraid of what was happening to me internally, that all I needed to do was say the Lords prayer and keep repeating it until I felt at ease with myself, and she kept it simple for me because she knows I am a simplistic person at heart.

God meets our individual needs because He knows us so well not the other way around.

  40. joycemb says:

Maru thinking about what you said this morning reminds me of the adage “the best defense is a good offense”. Now, I’ve always taken that to mean that you need to be aggressive against the attacker so they can’t get one up on you. (I may have misunderstood though) Maybe it is so that some in the church have felt the need to be “defenders of the faith” but I wonder why? If God’s will will be done no matter what why then do we feel the need to ‘attack’ whether with words or scripture even? Shouldn’t our lives, living as Jesus did, provoke questions in themselves? Just thinking… Thanks Maru great question.

Viv, what I am learning during this bible study are there are normally two different ways of thinking about the Devil’s antics; 1. people give him to much credit and blame. 2. while others underestimate his influence. I fit into the underestimating category but now I am learning about all the Word has to say about the adversaries work.

  43. street says:

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

5 “Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.

8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees

13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.

15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’ 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.

  44. poohpity says:

and boy is it enlightening. I see it in our schools with taking prayer out, with taking God’s things out of the public, the things that are going on around the world, in our families, in our relationships, regarding circumstance we face, wrong assumption about God’s character, illnesses. The list is to long for me to write. I did write about it a few topic back but no one really pays attention to anything I write so probably missed it.

  46. remarutho says:

    Dear All —

Good flow of comments here, in my opinion. Rattling around in my brain is an entry in Our Daily Bread sometime last month — suggesting that when we focus on the law, we are constantly reminded that we can never be good enough to deserve God’s grace. But when we look to Jesus, we become more like Him, allowing the Holy Spirit to change us.

Perhaps we are afraid of that change.

Poor Don Quixote held fast to the set of rules established in the age of knighthood and courtly love and honor. His tools are outmoded for the challenges he faces. He wanders around in a fog of misunderstanding, it seems to me. He is constantly disappointed that his perceptions are off — so, he is ready to duel all those who do not see what he sees.

Am certainly confused by some of the words and behavior I see both inside and outside the body of Christ. My hope and joy are in seeking to grow in Christ — and to see the world as He sees it.

    Change my heart, O God.
    Make it ever true.
    Change my heart, O God.
    May I be like You.
    You are the Potter.
    I am the clay.
    Mold me and make me.
    This is what I pray.
    Change my heart, O God.
    Make it ever true.
    Change my heart, O God.
    May I be like You.

Pat, Street is quoting from Matthew 23 – the seven (or eight) woes proclaimed by Jesus on the Scribes and Pharisees. Verse 14 is not found in earliest manuscripts of the Gospel. I am one who does not believe the pillars of the faith are shaken by slight differences in ancient manuscripts of the Bible.

  48. poohpity says:

I wonder if that is not also the work of the adversary to compare a work of fiction(Don Quixote) with a historical book(Bible). What I mean by that is that many seem to think that the bible is not real stories of real people and about a real God. If they do not believe in a real God then possibly then they may not believe that Satan is real either.

jeff1 says…”The difference, in you, and I, Gary, is that you have divided yourself from those in this world, whom you see as unsaved, because they have not by word of mouth, accepted Jesus as Saviour.

    “What?”

I do not make up the rules here, or anywhere else.

I only share what I believe the word says about such things found in

Matthew 8:34 “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

Try to sell that concept to the rest of the lost, fallen, and unbelieving world without the help of the Holy Spirit, and failure/separation will be yours as well.

Or, verse 35, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.”

We must walk circumspectly in the world, but, not also by being part of it.

So, it is not by my standards that any separation exists, it is by God’s design and by his wisdom found in the word.

Amos 3:3 “Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?”

“All who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”

“Whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”

It does not say All who do not, will also be saved anyhow…

To me, that would be adding in your own loving paraphrase, because it sounds so right that all are to be ultimately saved.

    Things like…

All roads lead to heaven, and every living thing God has created will never see destruction, but, that is not the gospel message either.

    Good Afternoon BTA Friends —

Pretty sure you are referring to Matthew 16:24, 25, Gary. Discipleship is costly. But, are those who have not yet believed in Jesus Christ called to account for the disciplines

Is the world condemned out of hand — or are we perhaps called to share this great Good News of God’s love with those who need to know?

  53. poohpity says:

1 Timothy 2:3-4 notice it says that God’s desire is for ALL men to be saved.

  54. oneg2dblu says:

Most everyone I know, even Satan and all those unbelievers that he currently walks in unity with, all have desires, or wishes or a will, but, they do not all come to fruition, do they?

God has already paved the way, shown us the way, put us on the way, yet, we want something more?

For some or even many in this world who come under attack, or pressure, or time of testing, where other conditions larger than their means, can quickly fold them under, dry them up, and overpower that will, that means those other things can prevent one’s desires from ever maturing.

Taken from the parable of the sower…

Just forming a desire to quit something like smoking, drinking, lying, cheating, swearing, you name it, does not equal overcoming the very next time the urge appears.

Some desires, like great riches, finding a perfect spouse, losing weight, holding your tongue, or the like, each have there moment, but, having a desire alone is not the same thing as acquiring success.

I did not formulate the recipe for who gets to the Father and who does not, but, Christ has, and according to Him, no one gets to the Father accept through Him.

Now, if it is “your will” to present a getting to the Father in another way, or grant us to find another way, then have at it, good luck, happy trails, best wishes, but, there is no guarantee I would trust in more than the very Word of God on this issue.

I trust we would all agree on that one point.

So, lets walk in that agreed direction and stop tripping each other up by pulling everything in different directions all the time.

Why can’t the Narrow Road that few will find, be enough for us to desire?

Why must we push the “wider road theory” that everyone eventually finds it, as the better agenda?

I wonder just where, or who, has actually put that “other desire” in your will?

    Gary

  55. tracey5tgbtg says:

Gary, how come your gospel depends completely on your ability to carry your own cross, to choose the right path, to overcome all sinful desires, to find that narrow road,to follow the “correct” rules, etc. etc.

When does your gospel ever depend completely and wholly on Jesus Christ and His atoning death and resurrection? When does your gospel ever depend on the grace of God to do for you what you cannot?

You are so concerned with getting it right and doing it right and being right. How come you never tell us how much you love your Savior? Apart from Him you can do nothing.

    Tracey

  56. oneg2dblu says:

Maru… thanks for finding my reference blunder.
Yes, it is as you cited.

Everybody gets a chance at messing up.

    Matthew 7:13,14
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

I wonder how many of those seeds sown by the sower, actually came to fruition?

    A few, many, or all?

And, I wonder who was the sower, and what was the desire or the will of that sower?

    Just thinking…

  57. jeff1 says:

Can I just say this Gary, you have found the narrow way so you are saved and those of us who share the gospel also.

I had a lifetime of ups and downs and doubts and fears before I finally knew God loved me and even yet on a very bad day I can still feel unloved.

There are people today who have not been brought up with the gospel as the modern world has changed somewhat since I was a child.

I can not believe that God will not allow these people the same chances He gave me in getting to know that He loves them.

No, I do not believe that all will be saved but if there is just the smallest chance that a man can get from the wide road to the narrow road then I will be truly happy for that person for I have been on the wide road long enough to know how difficult it is.

My desire is to be with God in heaven but not until my work for Him has finished on earth. I do not want to be so heavenly that I am no earthly good.

  58. oneg2dblu says:

Tracy… I was only sharing some of God’s Word.

And apparently, you only seem to see evil in me, a placing of me apart from Him, and, if I can do nothing apart from him, as you say, than why are you being so easily rattled by me?

Why must you continue with this poking of your fingers at this thing you label as being “my gospel,” when we should agree that God’s Word, is God’s Word?

“Narrow is the road and few will find it.”

Since when has any means of citing a possible plan for right living, as defined by the word, become such an abomination to you?

Heck we are all sinners here, sinners saved by Grace.

    No exceptions!

But some also realize they can live a new and changed life, when Empowered by the Spirit to be even better disciples than when we were first saved, not ever sinless, but certainly sinning less.

If hearing of any change in others, somehow threatens your Grace Position, take it to the Lord, but don’t ask me for your sake, or your comfort, to relax my ever pressing on as to win the race.

    Gary

Why are you are focusing on me, and your incessant need to be labeling my every contribution or thought here as if it is, “my gospel.”

Why don’t you tell us how much you love your Savior?

  59. oneg2dblu says:

I knew I would hear that phrase, or paraphrase if you will, as if it were somehow part of the real gospel.

But, it is not really there, is it?

I was going to get that “trash speak” out of the way when I first posted, but chose not to, for I knew in my spirit it was soon coming…

“Being so heavenly minded that you are no earthly good.”

I am blessed, as I do not struggle with the thoughts that I am not always with God, or that He has turned His back on me, or does not hear my prayers, or is silent.

It just does not resonate within me, because, I know, that I know, that I know, “Jesus knows me, and this I love.”

Looking back on my journals and there are now many, I must confess there is a recurring theme that is most prevalent, it says, “Thank You Lord for the Presence of Your Holy Spirit, my most valued possession.”

If I ever had a gospel message of “my own” for My Savior, it is the constant playing of that one note cord, I strike it often and trust it is music to His ever listening ears.

    Good night!

  60. tracey5tgbtg says:

I love Jesus Christ, my God and Savior. Without Him, I am nothing. Without Him there is nothing.

Preach what you must but give the thanks and praise and glory to God who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

  61. oneg2dblu says:

PS When I called upon the Lord and He answered, He Saved me, it was in a way that needed no further evidence.
But, just prior to my calling out, was the very present sound of my own childhood voice singing within me, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the bible tells me so.”
That is part of my written testimony, which I shared with Mart many years ago, and that part will never change, for it is the foundation which all other parts are built upon.

  67. remarutho says:

    Dear BTA Friends —

Surely loving the Lord is very dear to His heart. He loves us and calls us to love Him. This is the heart of the Good News:

“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6:4-7

Jesus reaffirms the call to love God, and one another:

“And He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment.

The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40

Tonight I am wondering what could matter more than this, especially when we are under fire.

    Blessings,

    Dear All
I Hope the journey you all had with God has been exciting. I find this is a very important subject the WORD of God.
Steve,Thanks for your post Is there a “Truth” written beyond the “Written Word”?I have to say that any generalization or paraphrasing of Scripture is dangerous theology and the scale of measuring it is simple; does it conflict with what the Scripture says?
This triggers my mind to think. The Word is God John 1:1, the truth beyond the written Word, is God himself, I have to agree that people do generalized things and paraphrasing Scripture, which confuses us with people who is speaking the truth as sometimes God does use people to speak to us, even with a word of God, it has power in it.
Therefore, to really prevent generalizing or getting it wrong is to seek the face of God. Don’t stop at just reading about Him but to experience Him , here’s why 2 Corinthians 3:6. When i read this, the letter itself is dead but only when we allow the Holy Spirit to speak to us through the word, having the relationship, doing the word of God ,changes your life.Other words. the word of God change lives only when we let it. Sometimes we’ll come across people who know theology, word of God inside out but they are not even saved. Luke 10:21-22. God want us to come to Him like a little child, like Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus, Matthew 18:3, Why? because only laying aside all our head knowledge, I know it all, then He is able to speak to us.This is what it means to be humble. Sometimes knowing just the Greek and Hebrews isn’t enough, need to seek that intimate relationship with Jesus.

  69. lovely says:

Just speaking from my experience with Christ all these years.
Lord Jesus I ask that you bless and reveal your self to all your people here, that they may see your love , that the world can’t see but we can , in that when we’ve experience it we can be the light of the world to shine it out unto others for isn’t this the reason why we’re all still here!. In Jesus Name i pray Amen

  70. foreverblessed says:

Narrow is the way, and few will find it

Jesus came to SEEK, and save that which is lost.

All those who do not find the way, meaning that they lost the way.
But Jesus said also He was going to SEEK!

Our lovely Savior! Mine and for all mankind-!

  71. foreverblessed says:

And not only Jesus, but let us go out and seek the lost, not we alone but we guided by the Spirit.
In my case, I pray, pray that God will put His sign on this person I meet, and on that person I meet.
And I pray in faith, for the people I hope for, and I pray that my hope will increase, Rom 15:13 (NIV) that I have hope for the hopeless, so that hope connected with faith will make into being in the spiritual Kingdom, Heb 11:1 (NIV) that what I pray for: saving lost souls.

  72. foreverblessed says:

I wanted another translation of Heb 11:1 (KJV)
Faith is the substance for the things we hope for,
substance is real, the reality. So that what we hope for, is being made real in the spiritual Kingdom, when it is connected to faith.
In then suddenly it becomes essentialia that our hope increase.
I now search my heart: what do you hope for.
And then people come into my mind, that they may find Jesus, and come to rest in Him, their search is over, they have found their treasure: Rest, peace, joy, love.

What if many christians pray for their fellow man that is lost,
The Hole Spirit waits for our prayers, so He can work on them.
Jesus has attached Himself to the Bride, He wants to work through the Bride, and that is us, together, all one in Him, and He in the Father. John 17:23

  73. SFDBWV says:

    “Under Fire”
I am reminded of my military training of over 50 years ago when reading this heading and soon see a connection to or subject immerge.

There is a military term called “fire superiority”, it refers to gaining the upper hand when you come under fire from an enemy.

It sounds simple enough, when fired at you not only out gun your enemy, but you make him put his head down and quit firing at you by overwhelming “fire superiority”.

God has given us all the weaponry as well as all the authority to overwhelm our enemy we need, and even when we fail and weaken He provides an escape route for us.

Part of warfare is in knowing your enemy, his strengths as well as his weaknesses. Without exception Satan has no authority that we don’t surrender to him. Jesus has authority over Satan and Jesus shares that authority with us.

When we recognize the enemy we have no fear because we out gun him and our shield is no less than God, the Creator of the universe, the Author of life.

Wherever we go that power and authority goes with us…Even into the valley of the shadow of death.

I am reminded also that the returning Christ (Revelation 19:13) is pictured as having a sharp sword coming out of His mouth from which He would smite the nations. (Revelation 19:15)

Be at peace we are on the winning side and have a Book that says so.

15 degrees this morning under partly cloudy skies.

Foreverblessed thank you for the retranslation of Hebrews 11:1 (KJV), it is easy to see why I prefer the King James over other modern translations.

I also wanted to say that I agree, Jesus has a heart for the unsaved and seeks them out, and if we are indwelt by His Holy Spirit, we too share in that same compassion.

You do well in showing Christ in you, thank you.

    Steve

Welk, it is the same as what Lovely wrote about ( thank you very very much for your prayer)

The love and Joy and peace we have in our inner parts because of Him in us

When one thinks that they can be overcome by the accuser or under his fire remember. Eph 1:3 NLT; Eph 1:3 NIV; Eph 1:3; Eph 1:3 KJV; no matter what translation one uses the principles are still the same.

  79. poohpity says:

But it seems that the prince of this world tries any means possible to take our minds off of God to concentrate on flesh and blood; i.e. arguments over which translation is better, not knowing the very foundation of our beliefs but mixes it with confusion, pride in self righteousness and our own abilities anything to take our focus from above to the things involved with flesh and blood and there are many so be on your guard and stand firm in the Lord.

  80. joycemb says:

3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Ephesians1:3

Yes what a wonderful thought to focus on, the many spiritual blessings we have because of our allegiance with Christ! Thank you Pooh

  81. joycemb says:

Thank you forever for this reminder also: “The love and Joy and peace we have in our inner parts because of Him in us”. A good idea for me to focus on this and not what the world or my own emotions throw at me by taking captive every thought in obedience to Christ.

  82. oneg2dblu says:

It never seems to amaze me how the written word of God, can not ever stand as it is, but somehow needs a constant tweaking by man.

Maybe because man has always had problems accepting God’s word ever since the Garden, and certainly even more so at Mount Sinai, and almost everywhere today no matter what version we create or tend to use.

Whether spoken, or written in stone, even in His Church, God’s Word is always is met with consternation, abject rejection, or a sever watering down by the world to make it more palatable, and yet, the scriptures clearly say there will come a time when sound doctrine will no longer be tolerated.
Sadly enough, all this constant tweaking, paraphrasing, and a plethora of translations, there is still much division in the church and everywhere else.

To me,it is proof of the ever-darkening world around us, and for such a time as this, surely closer to the end time, we who live in this world today all suffer for His Return.

    Come Jesus!

or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
    20
Do you make it leap like a locust,
striking terror with its proud snorting?
    21
It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,
    and charges into the fray.
    22
    It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing;
it does not shy away from the sword.
    23
The quiver rattles against its side,
along with the flashing spear and lance.
    24
    In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground;
it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.
    25
At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’
It catches the scent of battle from afar,
the shout of commanders and the battle cry.

    James 3
2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.

    Revelation 19

11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.

13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[a] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.

these verses come to mind mart on the challenge that faces us.

  84. street says:

  86. poohpity says:

Gary, do you know how to read Aramaic, Hebrew or Greek? If not then does one need a translation? I think so. That seems to be a good example of reasoning as a man reasons but for those who trust God we know that He is our teacher and we will not be lead astray as long as we depend on Him. The translators are very careful in not changing what is written but of course there are always people who can ruin anything but that can not happen when one is familiar, grounded and rooted in what the Bible says by knowing the One who inspired it. Try it sometime. ;-)

  87. poohpity says:

Gary, I have a bible that was printed in the 1800’s and it says the same things as the newer bible’s do. It was printed by the American Bible Society. God will make sure that His word stays true to those who are truly seeking and searching to know our God. There is a program put out by Day of Discovery about how the bible remains over thousands of years it is truly miraculous. The name of the program is “The Bible: Why Does It Endure?”

  88. poohpity says:

There are two religions that have changed what the bible says one is the Jehovah’s witnesses who used the KJV and changed the meaning of obscure terms used in old English(New World Translation) and the other is the Mormon religion who also used the KJV because of it’s obscure terminology. But unless one is familiar with the bible then one would never know that. They play on the ignorance of scripture to persuade people to their doctrines as is also the case with some Christian churches. Just like politicians play off of the ignorance of the people to make promises that can not even be possible to come to pass.

  89. street says:

8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

been thinking about reduction-ism, simplicity, or paraphrasing, in that dwelling on One Name would cover all these verses….”Jesus”

oh that these things will be found in us.

  90. phpatato says:

Gary, I catch the gist of what you are saying and I have to agree.

I was going to let things lie but because there are still comments being posted about this, I will add to them just to show how the newer translations differ from the King James Version, which can alter the meaning..here are a couple more examples. Disclaimer: It is not my intent to get into a debate about which one is better. I have a preference version as I am sure everyone does. I am only commenting to perhaps give food for thought.

    Daniel 3:25

King James Version (KJV): “He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

New International Version (NIV): “He said, Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.

New American Standard Version (NASV): He answered and said, Look! I see four men loosed and walking about in the midst of the fire, without harm, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.” (You are able to see what the ESV has said by clicking on the “L” icon??

I believe the Son of God was able to perform the miracle of keeping the 3 men from being incinerated.

    Genesis 7:1

KJV: “And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou … into the ark;”

NIV: “The Lord then said to Noah, Go into the ark,…”

NASV: “Then the Lord said to Noah, Enter the ark,…”

NOTE: There is a difference between “Come” and “Go”. The KJV shows that the Lord was in the ark with Noah and his family.

These are a couple more examples of how subtle changes in words can change the meaning of the verse. I have also read where the Deity of Christ can be thrown into question with the modern translations. These translations are just babies in age when compared to the King James Version. Am I being too picky? Perhaps. But I will leave you with two quotes by a well-known respected pastor that I believe hits the mark……….

“Be on guard against any tampering with the Word, whether disguised as a search for truth, or a scholarly attempt at apparently hidden meanings; and beware of the confusion created by the senseless rash of new versions, translations, editions, and improvements upon the tried and tested Bible of our fathers and grandfathers.”

    SOURCE: THE TABERNACLE, Pg. 101

“”Let me repeat that no greater curse has ever afflicted the Church of Jesus Christ than the curse of spiritualizing Scripture, that is, making Scripture mean something other than its literal meaning… Instead of spiritualizing, it is ‘demonizing’ of the Scriptures, for if any ‘spirit’ has anything to do with that school of Scripture interpretation it must be an ‘evil spirit.’

No, the Scriptures were not given to us to confuse us but rather to instruct us. Certainly God intends that we should believe His Word with all simplicity. A thousand years means a thousand years; a wolf means a wolf; a lion means a lion. If you read your Bible that way, a child can understand it.”

  91. joycemb says:

Pat thanks for your post, it gives me food for thought. I haven’t gotten into a study of the reliability of modern translations but you make some good points.
We too only have a few patches of snow here but are expecting ‘blizzard’ conditions with 2-4 inches of snow expected. Not bad at all but makes driving at night difficult especially. Think I will stay in, as usual!

  92. joycemb says:

Ok so having a few minutes to think about the importance of word-for-word vs the meaning behind the scripture the only question that comes to mind is this: Does the enemy really enjoy watching followers of Christ fight over the mechanics of the inspired scriptures when our focus should be on the Inspirer? I believe ALL of scripture is inspired yet it does have human translators through the ages. However as different as they are in various ways they still remain the Word of God. I personally think it’s kind of like religious hysterics to claim and expect everyone else to believe that only one “version” is truly inspired, and I hope I don’t lose any friends over this but it’s just my humble opinion here. I do respect whatever version one likes for whatever reason however. Personally the more versions the merrier for want of a better word. The first Bible I read, because I could understand it, was called Reach Out, a Living translation I found in a motel room. I am so thankful it was there for me at the time I needed it! God reached out to me through this easy to read translation in language I could understand. Isn’t that what we all want–To understand and to share this marvelous manuscript with a fallen world?
    Ok off my soap box…

  93. poohpity says:

I think if one will do some research about the KJV you will find that is was translated not from the original text as most are today but from Latin which was translated from the original texts. Just google “English Bible History”. To me what this conversation is saying do not trust what the bible says especially if one does not read the favorite translation of the one who is criticizing other translation. But it all seems to be in some way a means to deter(another way the adversary works) reading the bible because we can not trust it’s reliability. My hunch is whatever translation one chooses it is still not read enough to make any difference in transforming one’s mind just something else to pick apart.

  94. poohpity says:

Amen Joyce! Your comment had not posted yet or I would not have written mine since you said it so well.

  100. oneg2dblu says:

Here’s my food or morsel, my thoughts about “any” translation… “They are all done by well wishing, fallible human translators.”

If the only motive is to just examine the original text and write it word for word in another language, then, it is to me still pure, exact, and without putting in any bias.

But, we all know that mankind who regenerates anything, other than directly through that original inspiration of God, probably do so with a bias, for many of the original words were limited, and had several meanings.

So, a more modern man comes with his many many other words, and creates a preferred version of what he thinks is the best use of the word or task needed to be described, as he tries to put himself into another place and time, or tries to walk in another’s shoes as best he can, or he simply sees what he does as being, “divinely inspired” as well, but not without his human condition fully engaged, and well in tact though.

Where as the bible says, using my own words here, “No Prophet of God ever spoke of his own design, or did they ever put their own twist on any Prophesy, as it came word to word directly from God through them.

I do not believe there is any mention in the original text about any future translations being as pure, directed, or without any bias, but, there is a mention that there will be itching ears that only hear what they want to.

So, we must depend on the Holy Spirit within us to protect us from any misleading, tweaking, watering down, or any wandering from the original intended message.

If as pooh cited, all translation is only meant to change the language, from the original older foreign one to the newer more familiar and without any error or bias.

If so, then I’ll ask only this one question..

Why do we today have so many different translations in the same English language, if nothing has ever been changed in any of them?

Heck we even have a “gender sensitive” version, where God is referred to as She.

I wonder what, or where, that one came from, the Greek, Aramaic, or the Hebrew?

I would say neither, it comes from those who will no longer tolerate the original word of God, or as the bible says, they will no longer tolerate sound doctrine.

So, if you fall into the _ _ _ version only sect, you may not be seeing all that God, or godly men who feel just as inspired as the ones who wrote your favorite version have to say about how they see it.

Narrow is the mind which will not tolerate other versions.

It seems most of mankind just can’t live with the word of God as written, so they make their own one up into what they prefer to hear.

Or, they pick and choose which verses they will believe, and which they believe do not apply to them, as that folks is the true human condition fully unbridled.

Just when you think you have found that perfect word in your version, along comes another’s thoughts, and you are faced with another reality.

As far as the actual exact correct word used to prompt the entry into the Arc, please remember this one fact folks, God was both outside and inside, for God is everywhere at the same time, because He is Omnipresent!

But, we can debate that too if you wish.

    Have at “er!

  101. remarutho says:

    Good Evening All —

Mart, you quote the Word Biblical Commentary: “…the sword of the word…is not first of all the word of judgment, but the good news of salvation.” Thank-you for that.

It seems to me our own personal testimony — “what Christ has won for us,” is the best we have to offer under fire.

It must be that “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” is the instant work of the Holy Spirit,

“When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

Pretty sure no one here has shed their own blood for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I could be wrong…

    Blessings,
    Maru

PS Seems to me, any argument over Bible versions is a diversion of the enemy. Please do not get sucked into that pit of destruction. KJV, RSV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, Message — whatever, stay in the Word of God!

I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,’

  103. SFDBWV says:

In reading all of the comments it becomes clear that people are quickly offensively defensive whereas what they consider the “written” Word of God to be. It also becomes obvious that for the most part folks forget that each of us are at various stages of growth within our understanding of these matters. As a result we may each see things differently. That isn’t so bad, but insisting that one agree over another isn’t a wise posture to stand on.

What you know today, can pale in what you may know tomorrow.

Like my friend Pat, I believe what I have already said concerning this topic is sufficient for my position and really don’t want to get into a nit picking squabble over who is more right than another.

It is the fundamentals that I look to in order to see whether I can agree in spirit concerning our Faith and I have already spelled that out in an earlier post.

I surrender to a wiser voice and am reminded to be quick to listen and slow to speak.

17 degrees 3 inches of snow on the ground except for the huge piles where it was plowed or shoveled from our big blast last week. More snow expected Monday through Friday this week; it would appear once again that “rat” in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania got it wrong.

  104. poohpity says:

Good thoughts Maru! It seems that those who argue the most about the translations seem to read it the least. Those who read it more know it is not worth the battle and the most important part is just in reading it. The enemy has many schemes, distortions, deceptions that seems to be what makes it so important to be aware of them since that is the most important struggle we face that turns us away from a closer relationship with the only One we can claim victory through.

  105. poohpity says:

    “Victory In Jesus”

I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
    To save a wretch like me;
    I heard about His groaning,
    Of His precious blood’s atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
    And won the victory.

    Chorus
    O victory in Jesus,
    My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
    With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
    He plunged me to victory,
    Beneath the cleansing flood.

    I heard about His healing,
    Of His cleansing pow’r revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
    And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, “Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,”
And somehow Jesus came and bro’t
    To me the victory.

    Chorus
    O victory in Jesus,
    My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
    With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
    He plunged me to victory,
    Beneath the cleansing flood.

    I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
    Beyond the crystal sea;
    About the angels singing,
    And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I’ll sing up there
    The song of victory.

    Chorus
    O victory in Jesus,
    My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
    With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
    He plunged me to victory,
    Beneath the cleansing flood.

I leave baffled and confused as to why people can’t recognize the disguise and vow never to return. Then I do, only to find one of those beautiful people being insulted and once again the enemy wins a round.

Couldn’t an ignore button solve a lot of problems here? Then if any commenter had a tendency to upset other commenters, one could just put them on ignore and never have to be subjected to it again. We could even put on ignore those who are deceived by the sheep disguise and not be subjected to their enabling tendencies.

There would be no visible sign of who was being ignored other than to those who had put the person on ignore…Wouldn’t that settle MANY of the problems here and bring back countless old family members here?

  109. poohpity says:

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

  110. foreverblessed says:

Yes Pooh, I agree, read the history of the bible, then you will find out that once in time the King James was the new translation, and considered suspiscious by many many christians, as the bible watered down. The same comments that people give now about the newer translation.
I personally am happy with internet, being able to read the bible “interlineair”, in Hebrew and Greek. In the biblehub site.

But most of all that I want to know Jesus personally, and how He is, and that goes above any literal interpretation that makes my heart shudder…
then I prefer to put everything on hold till God’s Light shines on it.

  111. foreverblessed says:

Dear Narrow, may God bless you, and keep you, may He give you peace inside your heart, may that peace be added with joy!
May that peace stay with you no matter what others write!

Even the discipels had to learn that when they were walking with Jesus, and these nasty comments of Jude, always around them.
May we learn to pray a blessing for the difficult people around us.

  112. poohpity says:

Sometimes it could be the one who notices the difficult people is actually the one being difficult. As Paul said, “You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things.”

  113. poohpity says:

forever, I have never heard of the nasty comments of Jude that was always around them. I am open to learning.

  114. poohpity says:

Everything we are learning under this topic teaches us we are not each others enemies, we are all journeying, struggling through this life together. The real enemy likes nothing more than for us to war against flesh and blood so let’s not give in to him. Let us love one another as Christ has loved us, not just in words but in deeds.

  115. narrowpathseeker says:

, Foreverblessed ..thank you for your prayers. I realize that the tares and wheat will be separated in the end and that the disciples were subjected to Judas. BUT, didn’t even Jesus have to get away from it all sometimes? I tend to think if the disciples could have put Judas on ignore …they would have.

I am just thinking, what harm could the ignore button do? If the people who recognize “difficult” people are in the wrong or even difficult to others…they can be ignored too…the only ones that may not like it are those who enjoy putting people down and they won’t be able to upset the cart and ruin people’s days over and over again. Now if that upsets them, then isn’t time they learn that that is NOT a Christian attribute?

  116. joycemb says:

Pat I am truly sorry that I caused you upset yesterday. Please forgive me. Joyce

  117. oneg2dblu says:

Can we just ask ourselves what is the purpose of allowing any open discourse, the part we all should enjoy about this blog, because it helps strengthen us, it tests us, and it all brings us closer to the actual inspection and reflection of the word/ words presented before us?
I we start to shut down each one who presents any premise other then the one we collectively like, or choose to express, we then no longer have open dialogue, we have created dictatorship, slavery, and a narrow-minded view, a hardened heart, a sift neck, and a closed society.
We have stifled free thought, speech, expression, and the exchange of productive discourse.
We can all do a “word search,” that would support the use of a singular word, and we can find it used in many translations, paraphrases, and current preaching, but, whether we accept the challenge, the imparted intention, the message, in a word, whichever word works for us in the one God can and will use in us, but, He may use another word for someone else’s understanding, or as Steve said, where they are on their faith walk, or discipleship journey.

So, whether we see the (go) as in “Go into all the world… or the (come) as in, “Come to Me all you who are heavily burdened…

We will all get the right message, eventually…

So, lets just relax, allow restraint and regulation to have its place, not dictating, but knowing well, that God is Ultimately in Control, even here.

    Be Blessed, Gary

Love is kind, patient etc. Put-downs in any way, shape or form are antithetical to mercy. The mercy Christ suffered and died for. When I put Christ first I choose to build up and not to tear down.
Gary I’m not accusing you of anything just expressing what I have learned on this blog.

  119. oneg2dblu says:

Here’s a literal use of the word, which we had better understand is to be taken literally…

“In the beginning God (which is only one word) created the heavens and the earth.”

Also to be taken as literal…

And God said, “Let there be light,”

And God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.”

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered in one place, and let dry ground appear.”

And God said, “Let the land produce vegetation:”

And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night,”

And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures,”

And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds:”

    Then to your point…

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image,”

God’s use of the word (us), and the word (our), in that one verse does not fully represent to our common human thinking proper use, which is, “How can the word one, also mean more than one?

Very simply explained, if we consider that we collectively are the church” which is to be one body, “the Bride.”

We the Believer’s, are to serve only one God, who is fully embodied, presented, and literally displayed in the scriptures, as three distinctly separate persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, yet,
Supernaturally and Divinely combined as a triad, a triune, a Holy Trinity, even thought that word is not found in the original texts, it is fully further exemplified and accepted in many church doctrines today.

Yes, translation is also the work of God.

    Gary

  120. oneg2dblu says:

joyce… thank you for your learned expression.

  121. foreverblessed says:

Narrow, what I would like to say: you can only see to it that you yourself are a light, a light shining because of Jesus.
Let the Holy Spirit discipline someone else, it is none of my business. God did bless Jacob, right after he had been terrible wrong! No word about the lies.
That’s why God calls Himself the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Meaning that God is the Father who calls, the Son who saves and the Holy Spirit who comfort and disciplines.

The Holy Spirit is so personal, I like it what Gary wrote, He might say to the one Come, and to the other Go.
And maybe one dat He says Come to me, and another day Go.
That’s following Jezus, not a set of rules but the guidance of the Holy Spirit, specifically

  122. foreverblessed says:

    ….specifically for me

  123. foreverblessed says:

We call Jesus, Jezus in Dutch.

  124. oneg2dblu says:

joyce… do you realize how much of the world is offended by the very mention of Jesus Christ?
How much of the world would rather live in darkness, than have themselves be exposed to or offended by the light?
How many prophets were sent out by God, only to be found as offensive, or rejected?
How much of the seed, or the word of God, is just cast by the sower, only to be trampled on, to never take root, to be too shallow and wither when tested by the heat of day, to be overgrown by the weeds, or silenced by the world, to never become mature and flourish, never regenerate or be fruitful?
Yes, the scriptures say, the word never returns void, but, how much word cast out, actually matures and returns fully submitted, fully empowered, and fruitful?
Why can’t we have discourse that makes us uncomfortable, moves us out of our complacency, and tests our resolve?
The harder the wind, the stronger the tree that survives.
Yes, we are weak, but He is strong.
Be strong, be encouraged, be all the God empowers you to be, and know that He will not test you beyond what you can bear.
No will he allow you to entrapped, He will provide a way out from being, “Under Fire.”
    Gary

  125. oneg2dblu says:

    Nor will He…oops!

  126. oneg2dblu says:

Nor will He allow you to be trapped…

“Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph 6:17).

came across this verse today and stopped me in my tracks again.

Psalm 149 [4] For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory. [5] Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds. [6] May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands, [7] to inflict vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples, [8] to bind their kings with fetters, their nobles with shackles of iron, [9] to carry out the sentence written against them- this is the glory of all his faithful people. Praise the LORD.

  128. joycemb says:

Gary yep I know the world is offended by Jesus. But amongst believers in Jesus shouldn’t we be trying to encourage one another, building up in our most holy faith? In the past as I’ve stated before some Christian counselors have caused me to regress in my faith rather than spur me on to good works. And these had advanced degrees from Christian colleges which is why I thought I could trust them. I learned from these experiences how fragile some are and to be more of a listener and pray-er. Still working on that though. Such a downfall for everyone when judging enters the discourse no matter what form it takes.

I love the picture Mart. I sometimes look at it and wonder if you don’t have the same look on your face when you read some of mine and others comments here. (Not all for sure!) You are a good man Mart I really appreciate you.

  129. street says:

dear gary, He loves us for no reason at all! satan accused job of loving God for a profit. satan found out job’s hope in God was for nothing. job truly was a righteous man. the righteous shall live by faith. in all of job’s testing there was an underlying faith and hope in God. he came to the realization that God does all things in keeping with His Character. God is love!

i truly hate withdrawing or disciplining my kids, but they need the foolishness driven from them and life implanted in them lest they die. i know when i do this my perception and ability to protect them is limited, but not so with God. no i am not God, so pray a lot.

  130. narrowpathseeker says:

Is everyone aware that the ignore feature does not restrict anyone from posting anything and that the only ones that can’t see what an individual is posting is the one that chose to ignore that person? It is not a punishment for anyone…just relief for the person that chooses to use it. If I was offending/hurting someone with what I was writing I would be glad that they could choose to ignore me as I would not be doing it intentionally..

Gary, as far as getting stronger with a big wind…believe me when I tell you I have had more than my share of big winds in the secular world…and they are still coming…I come to this site to fellowship with God loving people and to learn better ways to behave like a Christian not to read arrogant insults to them and learn how to behave like satan.

  131. foreverblessed says:

Narrow, you can always skip a comment, it’s all in your own Hands.

The evening devotion of today by Spurgeon, is about God saying to us -stay- or -go-

Not exactly the same as come or go.

  132. foreverblessed says:

All though I believe that you first have to -come- to Jesus, and be strong and steady closely united with Him, before He will give the command -go-

  133. joycemb says:

Street you mentioned back surgery a while ago…. how did that turn out for you?

  134. oneg2dblu says:

I guess God rescues all those he knows will never be able to stand on their own.
In this world we will always have trouble, and for those who know him, hear his voice and follow him, we will always be protected.
There is no better place for me to be, then to be a disciple, a lifelong leaner, Under His Discipline.

  135. poohpity says:

Under His Discipline? If one knows Him so well shouldn’t that be under His Grace, protection, mercy and under the shelter of His wings? Psalm 18:30, 36:7, 40:11, 61:7, 63:7, 91:4

  136. joycemb says:

Interesting question pooh. If you think of yourself as a “princess” then the relationship is all about being treated as ‘special, fragile and always needing protection only’ . Yet as I have asked before please show me scripture to validate that position. Still waiting for that.

Scripture says we are sons (and daughters) of God, and as such are disciplined for our own good. I posted the scriptures the other day but here they are again:

    Hebrews 12:5-11
    Rev. 3:12
    Proverbs 15:5

It does not mean that while under discipline we are not hidden and protected by God. It’s about our relationship with God, no free rides here.

  137. street says:

dear gary you are not alone. God reserved 7000 who did not bow their knees to baal

    Romans 11:3-5
3 “Lord, they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” 4 But what is the divine response to him? “I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” 5 In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice.

just a little reminder gary that my brother-in-law told me. God and one man constitute a majority. due you remember how many angles it take to put satan in the abyss for a thousand years? just one. our weakness is the flesh not the spirit.

  138. street says:

no back surgery scheduled yet. they told me march with all the insurance hoops to go through. it has bothered me all day today. it is nothing compared to what some people have gone through. God has been so good to me in Christ Jesus everything else is a blessing. thanks for praying.

  139. SFDBWV says:

Mart doesn’t like political subject matter here because of all the arguments it carries. Reminding me of the old warning of never discussing religion or politics with a friend as both is a sure way of losing a friend.

    Oh well here goes.

In painfully watching the New Hampshire Republican debates I was especially offended by Chris Christie’s attacks against Marco Rubio.

Christie’s bullying, to me, serves no purpose other than showing him to be a bully. The real enemy is the modern day Jezebel, Hilary Clinton. Marco though is a threat to Christie only because of Marco’s rise in popularity.

It is equally painful for me to see Christians here and everywhere do the same thing. Bullied in an attempt to either silence them or force them into accepting accepted thought.

When Pearl recognizes un-Christian like behavior in another she courageously speaks out against it. The enemy is not other Christian’s, but rather that spirit of un-Christ like behavior. The same spirit that this subject addresses and why there is a battle and why we put on the full armor of God.

The enemy is in the camp.

I am happy to say that both Pearl and Pat are my friends, as are many of you here. Many years ago before Matt’s troubles God spoke to me with a hyphenated word, “Stand-fast”.

It has served me well over these trying difficult years and for multiple purposes.

So for all of my friends here who call upon Jesus as their Lord, I say “Put on the full armor of God daily, stand your ground, stand-fast, and trust God to be your offence and defense in the spiritual battle that rages everywhere around us; even here among others who seem to have forgotten who the real enemy is.”

19 degrees with the threat of a foot of new snow coming in the next couple days.

I will gird up, suit up and face whatever comes, by standing fast I will be steadfast in my commitment and faith in Christ.

    Steve

  140. foreverblessed says:

    Under fire,
(the topic has moved on, but I wrote this and it belongs here)
Mart wanted to say that the message we bring to the enemy might be a message of love!
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoso believes….
    John 3:16
And then this, when we are under fire, from those who withstand us, persecute us:
    Matthew 5:43-45
If we want to take the written word literally, this verse is a good one.

I am still with that comment about taking the Word literal.
If the christian world would take the teaching of Jesus literally (well, except for taking out the eye and cutting of the hands) then christianity would look very different! I know for sure:
We, as christian nations, would treat all these people from other cultures with respect, give them job opportunities, treat them well, and so by love show them what christianity is. By love people would be attracted!

It would be the message of the Sword, that of Love.
The sword would pearce through hearts of men, and would show what real love is. That there would be a life of blessedness, when everyone shares, and not takes for himself, and so make a living.
But alas, we are not a christian country like that, we should have been like that years and years ago, but the greed and the love of money has taken over a long long time ago.
Sorry, I am rattling away. But I was envisioning such a society. Maybe Jesus waits till He returns till we as christian nations are like that, and have brought in many many souls for Jesus.

Judas, well Pooh, I thought this was common knowledge.
The character of Gollum in the famous book of Tolkien was based on Judas. All the while on their quest they had this companian that seemed such a distraction, but in the end it was clear he had an important function, not a nice function, but a needed one: to get that ring thrown into the fire.
Judas did not turn into a traitor overnight. Wasn’t it the fretting over Jesus’ ways and teachings, slowly eating into his mind, and so he became a victim to Satan.
John 12:4-8 talks about Judas, so it was known to the disciples that Judas was a thief, all along.
Here only one nasty comment is given, I take it, that there must have been many, as Jesus’ teaching was so revolutionary, as loving your enemies is. Show the other side of your face when you are being hit, “Here, hit this one too” Has anyone of you done that, literally or figuratively?

  141. foreverblessed says:

I have time to write, so I will say a little about being a princess too!
I have been to women’s conferences, and the theme has often been: King’s daughters.
One bible passage that would be central is then Psalm 45, the whole Psalm
First a description of the King Psalm 45:1-9
And then about the daughter, who has enchanted the King.
    Psalm 45:10-17
think of it: we as believers have enchanted the Great King, Psalm 45:11 do you ever think of Jesus like that? He is madly in love with us, loving us greatly, in other words. But like being in love, as the King was with this Daughter.
And other verses were those out of Song of Songs 1:12, 7:1 the whole book of course too.

Now there is a ministry in the Netherlands, the leader is a man, but he writes things that Jesus is madly in love with us. A man writes this!
and: We are the apples of God’s eyes, we have a saying: -little puppets in your eyes-
when God looks at us, there is a reflections of us in His eyes.
The apples of His eyes. Yes, we are King’s children!
We are bought with a price, we are His. And if we are His, He is the King, then we are His children. And a child of a King is called prince, or princess.

Anyway, it is not literally there in the bible, that I am a princess, but it is the art of reading into, or rather what the Spirit says to my heart. And that is spiritualizing scripture, and that is what it is about, having a Relation with Jesus, coming closer and closer to His heart, and then scripture gets an ever deepening meaning.

  142. poohpity says:

    Thank you forever. Exactly!

Joyce, is there a difference in being corrected or disciplined and being “under” discipline? Having God correct us and set us on a different path to me is way different than living under His discipline. Living “under His discipline” would seem to create a life of fear, fear of making the error then my eyes would be on me not on a grace and mercy filled God.

But it seems that Hebrew passage the verses before would lead one to believe that Jesus bared God’s punishment or discipline for our sins because God is just and righteous so someone had to pay the penalty or God would not be who He is.

  143. poohpity says:

It would seem that only those who choose to live under the law, live under God’s discipline. Romans 6:14

  144. poohpity says:

sorry forever I did not read the comment before the princess until right now. I must have missed it as I scrolled down.

Steve if you know Mart does not like us to talk about anything other than the topic then what would prompt you to do it? You said you know Mart does like us to talk about politics then went ahead and did it? Then speak as if others on here have un-Christ like behavior, well what would you call that?

  145. oneg2dblu says:

Yes pooh, all who have the Holy Spirit within them are
    Under Discipline.
Every time you Obey your Master, you are Under His Discipline.

“Not my will Father, but yours!”

Children obey your parents, is both the law, and being under discipline.

All God’s Discipline is for our own good.

At the time it may not feel that way though…
    Gary

  146. poohpity says:

Gary, I would not expect you to think of it any other way.

Steve, is gossiping behind peoples back Christ-like? Especially saying nothing but ugly things but it seems people of the same mind cling together. A good leader would notice the good in others and build on that now that would be Christ-like or following guidelines now that would also be Christ-like.

  147. jeff1 says:

Yes, Pooh, the difference is in how I see it. I was living under the laws when God corrected me because I was failing to see my own sinfulness. I was doing what was right in man’s eyes but my heart was far away from forgiveness.

I know that I still wander from what is right in God’s eyes, but the difference is, that I know it is, I, who need God’s forgiveness, as well as my enemies, while I believed before God convicted me that it was only my enemies that needed God’s mercy.

I now take it literally, that I have God’s grace and mercy. where as before, I believed because I was keeping the commandments, that I did not need God’s mercy as I by keeping His laws meant I was under His mercy.

I can justify any belief I have if I am not honest with God as to my motives. It is only when I finally owned up to what my underlying motives where that I agreed with God that I was equally as in need of His forgiveness as my enemies.

God needs me to be honest with Him and that may seem easy to some but if you have buried your feelings as I had for so many years then you very soon deceive yourself and justify your reasons and when you justify your reasons in you mind then no one can convince you that your motives are wrong but God Himself.

I did let others confuse me as to which came first keeping the 10 commandments or trusting Jesus for my Salvation.
It was failing to keep the commandments that led to my conviction and finally the acceptance that I can do nothing until I know Jesus.

The difficulty now, is not, in knowing that Jesus is my Salvation, but in my thoughts wandering to past failures and as you say Pooh, I live under fear again instead of grace.

I just want to say this to be helpful and not as being judgmental, because it applied to myself, but I know from experience, that it can be difficult to be honest about my own motives for my beliefs. I am not just talking beliefs in God but my beliefs about others that do effect my belief about God.

I find that God is always right in His judgment of me and therefore He will be right when it comes to His judgement of others.

I have not for most of my life been listening to what God was saying but I can tell you this when I was honest with God I realized that He knew me better then I knew myself.

I realize now that the most difficult part of getting to know God is that there are truths about myself that I would rather not believe, never the less, they are traits that God will expose in me for His purpose.

For God to change me I have first to be prepared to accept that it is I who need changing and that is where the battle begins!

  148. SFDBWV says:

Pearl, dear friend it would appear some already have that “ignore” button already implanted within their spirits and hearts as they choose to ignore the Holy Spirit in favor their own relationship with the father of lies, and it shows (fruit) in their own misguided view of life.

Dear friend Foreverblessed, I know your actual name, but continue to address you in the way you prefer and ask me to. I do so as it is what you ask and I honor your wishes with respect.

Of all the people here on the blog you are seen by me to be the most sensitive with a big loving heart and see most of things through rose colored glass.

This is a good view as it shows Jesus in your heart and nature.

The princess that Joyce was referring to had nothing to do with Christ like behavior, but rather a derogatory remark about feeling special without good cause. Such as a spoiled little girl would view herself as.

I realize there is a language barrier and I apologize for not being able to speak your language as you do speak mine so very well. I just wanted to explain just how easy it is to misunderstand the intent of a word.

I believe the same problem exists within all as they read what they want to believe in much of what Scripture says as well.

Please Foreverblessed my remarks here are in no way intended as scolding you or connecting you to any spirit other than the Holy Spirit, I just felt you may have misunderstood Joyce’s use of the intended use of the word princess.

    Steve

  149. poohpity says:

Steve forever completely understood what Joyce was asking me. I had answered Joyce’s question in the past then forever was saying it just in her own way. So maybe the misunderstanding was not forever.

So if you knew that it was wrong to talk about politics on the blog then what made you go ahead and do it anyway? Was that Christ-like? Even being convicted it was wrong and still doing it anyway?????

Is it possible for any person to connect any other person to the Holy Spirit isn’t something that only God can do?

  150. foreverblessed says:

Thanks Steve, you are so kind to me! I was thinking, you could call me by my second name: Rita!
And I do sincerely hope that Joyce will see herself as a princess too! Not thinking of a spoiled child, but a loved child of a King.
Do you remember that we had someone commenting here that was named: Kingsdaughter?
She had lost her son on a day in early March, 6 maybe? Just a few days before that time, and she stopped commenting. I have been kept her in my mind all along, and pray to God that He will cherish her as His precious daughter!

  151. joycemb says:

Pooh the remedy for unChristlike behavior is the cross. Seeing His pain and agony should bring anyone to their knees in repentance. Go to Jesus with your fears and accusations.
    God bless you.

  152. joycemb says:

Ok if it makes some feel better you can call me ‘princess’. Yes princess Joyce I am but I prefer the way of humility personally. Not humanistic humility but spiritual humility as I know how needy I am and that only God can fill that need.

Forever I think of you as a gem in the crown of the King. Thank you for your presence here. God bless you dear.

  153. SFDBWV says:

Rita…(Foreverblessed) this is so funny as my first wife of 31 years and Matthew’s mother was named Rita also. If she had a second name it was Jean as that was her middle name and she often got called Jean instead of Rita.

Since her death I married her cousin Glenna Jean and so it continues. I had an inside joke here for years about Jean as there was Rita Jean, Glenna Jean, Billie Jean, Bobby Jean and probably a few others I have forgotten all living here in my little town and close the same age. I joked there must have been a traveling salesman came through here named Gene that may have made quite the impression on the mothers of all those “Jeans”.

Life has too few smiles, but you always make me smile here on the blog.

    Thank You.

    Steve

  154. SFDBWV says:

Pooh, (Deborah) indeed I have talked about you to others, including my wife Glenna. So if you are upset with my discussing you with others if you like I will tell here on this blog everything I have said concerning you or what I know personally about you, including my pleas to Mart to use his influence to get you to “Stop it.”

And by stop it I mean just that. Quit trying to make everything all about you, quit trying to demean or sabotage mine or others comments, but especially mine.

Stop sewing discord and strife here amongst us and stop ruining every topic with unending arguing with whomever will step into your arena.

Many years ago Deborah our old friend Charlotte (g8granny) said to you on this blog that among everyone here you needed the most hugs.

You didn’t get it, as she was not talking about your past life, but rather about your then present behavior that has not changed one iota. And just so you don’t erroneously accuse her of any wrong doing she and I never discussed you at all even when she came to visit us nor when she called me every few days before her death.

So it’s your call Deborah, do you want me to tell all here what I know of you so there can be no gossip?
Or are you willing as I am to just “Stop it!”

    Steve

  155. poohpity says:

Joyce there is nothing wrong with clinging tightly to who we are in Christ because most often it effects how we live our lives.

Steve, I could care less if you talk about me behind my back or on here I have nothing to hide. Charlotte was also my friend as you were until I heard how you let your son talk to your wife with impunity. I enjoyed Glenna’s conversations and the conversations with Matt as well until the raging began and I felt bad for Glenna. Then you did not want me to know what was going on inside your home and the talking stopped.

Yes gr8granny knew I needed hugs because she was around when I was devastated with the loss of my mom then a year later the loss of my dad both of whom I was very close to. Actually when I first came on here in 2008 I shared with many on here what I was going through during the cancer treatments with my mom which Charlotte was going through too and many prayed for me and were holding me up in prayer or I may not have made it. That was a year before you came on here. I also comforted her every week listening on the phone because she was also struggling through cancer.

  156. poohpity says:

Steve, you also got mad at me because I wanted to submit your family for “Extreme Makeover Home Edition”. They were asking for referrals for people we knew that were very involved in their communities, up standing citizens and I thought about Matt needing handicapped accessible home. You also got made at me because I went to you personally many years ago about leading other people to go against the comment guidelines on this blog. You have been angry with me for many years then started to bring in others to promote more anger.

All this because I asked you a question.

  157. poohpity says:

So Steve, it is not my call it is yours. I am not angry with you nor do I resent you in anyway. I used to have a lot of respect for you.

  158. poohpity says:

Instead of writing to you personally I probably should have wrote to Mart to ask him to intercede but I sort of like sharing things with God and then addressing issues myself. Which is where the mistake was, I just should have left it with God and stopped addressing the issues myself. I am in the wrong.

  159. narrowpathseeker says:

Steve, God Bless you.. Thank you for always being honest, caring, and protective. I am soooo sorry that you are being attacked for having our backs. Perhaps NOW eyes will be opened to see what so many of us have seen for years now. I think most here KNOW the beautiful person you are and know that you aren’t a liar.
On the other hand the one who makes up lie after lie for attention and pity and to gain sympathy when she knows her schemes are failing has a few that weren’t quite sure what she was all about… NOW..MAYBE NOW they will see clearly…shake off the dust…and pray for her but not be deceived and/or devoured.

  160. narrowpathseeker says:

    or led into her web…Pearl

  161. joycemb says:

BTW, speaking of gossip, well, the problem with lying is after a few years one forgets what lies they told! So they often must make up new ones and that’s where the truth is revealed. Pooh I too knew you once for a short time but all you seemed to want to talk about was how dysfunctional the blog was because of Steve. As I got to know him and you I recognized who was the cause of the dysfunction here–and it wasn’t Steve. In trying to understand you I got caught up in all the dysfunction but eventually learned you are not capable of change as you don’t want to. That’s fine, I can let you be who you are. God knows you as He does me. Time will tell won’t it? I have never shared this with anyone lest I am accused of gossip. This has been my experience here and oh, Mart knows about as I shared it with him early on so yes I did gossip to him only because I knew how toxic you are personally. I’m toxic to some in my own way, currently my kids think I’m Hitler so have chosen to ignore me. As much as it hurts I can walk away and see it as THEIR problem, not mine. Prayers work best in this situation. Thank God they don’t beat me up publicly that would really be hard to take! I’d have to ignore and even unfriend them for a time to keep peace. Wishing we could have peace here but it’s not going to happen. (sigh)

I love you for who you are and what you say and how you say it. You are a rare and precious human being. I am truly blessed to have “met” you. You live your testimony which is truth and love, for there isn’t anything false about you. It is evident to anyone who has eyes to see that you are the real deal!!!

    Proverbs 12:16-23 – NIV

    16) Fools show their annoyance at once,
but the prudent overlook an insult.
    17) An honest witness tells the truth,
but a false witness tells lies.
    18) The words of the reckless pierce like swords,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
    19) Truthful lips endure forever,
but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.
    20) Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil,
but those who promote peace have joy.
    21) No harm overtakes the righteous,
but the wicked have their fill of trouble.
    22) The Lord detests lying lips,
but he delights in people who are trustworthy.
    23) The prudent keep their knowledge to themselves,
but a fool’s heart blurts out folly.

Which one do you see yourself as pooh?

  164. poohpity says:

Joyce, that is not what I said about Steve. I said exactly what I say on here that he takes the blog off topic. That is all I said as if it were his blog not Mart’s. Now does that sound more like what I said without your toxic twist to it?

  165. poohpity says:

The most important question Pat would be where do you see yourself? Is there a full moon out tonight?

  166. poohpity says:

Steve, narrow, Pat and Joyce thank you all so much for the feedback and opinions on how y’all see me. I will be sure to do a further evaluation on all my many flaws so that one day I will fit in better with your group.

  167. joycemb says:

All I can do is shake my head in disbelief, again.

  168. narrowpathseeker says:

Pooh, you are very welcome for my part. I hope you do that and I hope your eyes are opened one day. I believe that would be a very difficult day for you, but I am very confident that the four you address above would be there with outstretched hands so to speak to console and lift you up.

  169. narrowpathseeker says:

Pooh, your remark to Pat about the full moon made me laugh. Inasmuch as I have noticed countless times that you point out problems of other people that most often describes you far more than the person you are devouring. If we go back and check the dates of your most vicious attacks, we could track the full moon.

I’m sorry but WHY would you think that EVERYBODY else here is the trouble maker and you are the “innocent” victim. Do you see us replying angrily to anyone but you? PLEASE, do what you said you were going to do…evaluate youself further… God loves the truth….I think you will be happier than you have ever been in your life if you just get those blinders off and start over again in the light.

  170. oneg2dblu says:

I must admit that I too have written Mart early on, about finding a voice here that was so contentious, upsetting, annoying.
It may have been just my needing to get used to communicating on this blog type environment where expressing oneself, and hearing and understanding others comments sometimes can be very perplexing or difficult.
But, this voice was always disturbing the waters like a rigid sea wall, as it constantly is pushing back and confusing all the incoming waves, where a softer shoreline would just absorb them and not have to constantly be so challenging.
There may be others who have found the same, and there may those who also hold the same thoughts toward myself here.
So, rather than just outright accuse and sentence, I have had to learn that we need to look at the source, although hard to find, it is apparent, that hurt people, hurt people.
    Anybody here ever been hurt?
Anybody here ever react in a way you wish you could retract,
    or spoken out of line?
Everybody gets to take a swing at the incoming ball, but, some seem to hit it more than others.
I like to say, “A thing is, what it is!”
But, none of us are perfect or beyond any correction, or beyond the ability to be more Christ-like, more resolute, more patient, an more absorbing like a smooth shoreline.
With our human condition, that is easier said, then done.
    Gary

  171. poohpity says:

narrow, please explain to me when I have ever claimed innocence? I have said however just exactly what you said, “Inasmuch as I have noticed countless times that you point out problems of other people that most often describes you far more than the person you are devouring.” At least that lesson has sunk in but the most important part is not looking a my flaws but your own. I know I have so many that take up my time it would be pointless to point all those I see in others because it actually is not my business. Not only that but I only get to see a small glimpse of who y’all are so what I think would be totally factless. I do trust that God can see your heart and that is all that really matters after all.

  172. poohpity says:

Like I have said in the past I AM NOT YOUR ENEMY! FYI none of my replies are said in anger maybe hurt but not anger. Remember “Inasmuch as I have noticed countless times that you point out problems of other people that most often describes you far more than the person you are devouring.”

  173. foreverblessed says:

Very well Pooh, so everything you wrote is written in love!
Is it possible for you to see that everything I write to you is also written in love? I asked you a question, some time ago, and you attacked me hard, that I should have shown you grace, but according to you apparantly I didn’t. So I tell you too: everything I wrote to you I wrote in love!
Can you see the love behind what others wrote, just as you ask us to see the heart with which you write?

  174. foreverblessed says:

All though, I skipped what you grote about Steve, that was too private, and I hope it will be deleted.
As dat as East is from the West.

  175. foreverblessed says:

Remember Jesus tells us when our brother says sorry that we forgive 7 times 7 a day, and that is a lot.
Jesus lived us to bits! With all our flaws, He sees through them, something like Lazarus wrapped in graveclothes.
We would see the graveclothes, He sees him unwrapped.
And that is mostly bit by bit.
See how a person was in the past, and compate it to now, huge steps forward, but still way behind the graciousness Jesus shows us. Paul said: see the new man, not the old!
I ask God to help me with that, it is so difficult!

See the new person in Christ, like seeing through the grave clothes.

  176. foreverblessed says:

    Jesus loves to bits

  177. poohpity says:

forever, I also never claimed that everything I wrote was in love. It would be nice if that were the case but it was not. I only said some of it was written in hurt but not anger.

  178. foreverblessed says:

Well, the I tell you it did hurt me that you said my comment to you lacked grace. You just lashed out to me, and it did hurt.
I love you to bits, at least I want to.

  179. poohpity says:

forever, I wish I could remember what you are speaking about. Was I lashing out? I would be willing to reread the conversation because I do not have the intent to hurt anyone. I work real hard at not calling names, or putting anyone down or sharing my opinion about personalities. I apologize for hurting you, it was not done intentionally, will you forgive me?

  180. foreverblessed says:

    Yes, Pooh, forgiven!
Neither do I want to hurt.
    But maybe I do.

  181. poohpity says:

Thank you forever. That last line seems to be a very honest self evaluation.

  182. street says:

mart are you having server problems?
