What has God Said?

DSC01526 (1)Thanks to all who jumped into the conversation, “Under Fire”. Seems like we are all rightly sensitive to the original “has God said?” challenge of our enemy.

Yet, we now face a different set of problems. Today, when it comes to interpreting and applying Scripture, if we don’t say, or at least wonder, “has God– really said or meant that for us?” we are going to hand over our minds to whoever is using the Bible for our help or harm.

We need to find a way to hear “the word of God” while at the same time learning to avoid endless, fragmenting, divisive, arguments about the Bible.

So what would you think of something as basic as this as a starting point?

The Bible is so important because… it gives inspired witness to the power of God to speak the universe into existence and then…tells the hi(s)tory of how our Creator and God has come to us in Jesus… what he has done for us… and our need of him.

Standing on that ground, together, we discover that when the inspired Scriptures refer to the word of God they may be referring to:

(a) A direct quote of God (Gen 1:1-3; 1Sam 9:27)

(b) The life-sustaining provisions that God speaks into our lives (Matt 4:4) (Deut 8:3)

(c) An intentionally spoken word from God that goes from his mouth to bring about his good purposes (Isa 55:7-13)

(d) The good news of or about Christ (Col 1:5-6; 3:16) or

(e) A direct reference to Christ who is himself the ultimate Word of God (John 1:1-3) and to whom all lesser words give witness (Matt 5:17-18).

With that background let’s have the courage to ask, what is God really saying to us when Paul writes that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (or word of Christ) (Rom 10:17)? Is he requiring us to rightly interpret any one specific written text— or rather to hear what the whole story of Scripture ends up giving witness to—that the word that saves us—is the (message) of the Gospel of Christ?

About interpreting the bible, I believe it is about me having a relation with Jesus, and as that relation is deepening, my ears hear more and more.
And it is my walk with Jesus, and where I am. Someone else might be somewhere else, and does hear different things. Like I hear the word saying to me that I am a King’s daughter (In the former topic I just commented on that, and on Judas too).
But someone else doesn’t hear that, and that is fine.
Like I never would have believed that God is madly in love with us, only thinking like that would make me disturbed. But now I do believe that God is, and that our being in love is a mild reflection of His love. That it is mature, but also very expressive, like as in being in love, He can never have His eyes of from us, He needs to keep looking, just as when you are in love, you have to look in the eyes, you have to be around that person, and so it is with God and us. He just has to keep looking out of dear fondness. And is that in the bible? If you do not have such a close relation with Jesus, you do not see that, you do not hear that.
So is the word of Christ: He that has an ear let him hear.

  2. poohpity says:

forever, I misunderstood that it was Judas that you were speaking of in the last topic and not Jude. Yes just as the devil used Peter to deter Jesus from doing God’s will he also came upon Judas to turn Jesus over the priests. (John 13:2, 27) But I still do not understand the nasty comments no more so than any of the other disciples as they walked with Jesus. They seemed to fight over (John and James) who would sit at Jesus’ right hand in the kingdom and many other petty things before they were filled with the Spirit.

It does seem that it is a whole story line in the bible and yes we can misuse what God has said or is saying to justify our own worldly thinking or wrong assumptions about God. It seems to give us a glimpse of God’s character, power and authority over ALL things while providing us with a mirror to reflect who we are and tools to use against the spiritual forces of darkness in this world. Not a hammer to beat others up but as a means of hope to draw people to know our loving, merciful, gracious God.

Good Morning Mart & Friends —

You have laid out a ground for discussion, Mart, that should be broad enough to keep us from getting tangled up a struggle to contradict one another.

The Bible has been given as a guide — in all the ways you sketch out above: God speaking, God providing, God bringing about God’s will, the New Covenant — Jesus Christ — the saving Word of Life.

Agreeing with you, Foreverblessed, that what God has said transforms us and draws us into an intimate, loving, adoring, worshiping relationship in Jesus. Though we are finite, God’s love is not. We are wooed and drawn into a more and more fond regard for the Lord.

God already loves us more than we can conceive.

Unseasonably warm here, 41F and foggy. Forecast to reach a sunny 64F today.

    Joy all day,

This is a topic that I have championed for many, many years. It took me a long time to understand that Christ speaks directly to my heart through the Holy Spirit. It took me another length of time to trust what I was hearing in my heart…especially if it wasn’t the same thing that a pastor or other Christians were telling me. God’s Word is living and opens our understanding as we are ready to receive and apply it to the circumstances of our lives. It brings to mind Martin Luther nailing his treatise of “living by faith” to the door of the church and being called a dissenter. The older I get, the more I keep my distance from groups and people who push for decisions and commitments until I have time to mull it over in prayer.

  5. joycemb says:

Swwagner I have learned the same thing about “keeping distance from groups and people who push for decisions and commitments”.

Being a dissenter is certainly not a popular thing and can lead to death in various forms even, but the life of faith I would not trade for any other.

We may have disagreements about interpretation depending on our religious background, but the prevailing vote is always carried by Jesus! The Perfect One, not only our Creator but our Sustainer in this life of faith in a very dirty world.

Being in the world but not of it is easier when I follow the Word, the living word. So thankful for a way out of the muck and mire sometimes. It is truly a very very pretty world we live in, but not a part of.

  6. oneg2dblu says:

This is how I understand what and how that Faith Deposit by hearing comes about.
This is a type of faith that means Faith in God, means that you have an understanding in that God is, and God is Who God says He is.
It means that you have been Enlightened by God, and not man, to know Him by this faith which is not by your own intuition or knowledge, but by Divine Intervention, a means which implores you to receive this, as His Word of Knowledge, which we label, Faith.
    Gary
An inner voicing which can not be from any other source, it can not come from the world, it can not come from any material thing, for it is a spiritual awakening.

  7. oneg2dblu says:

To further my exchange here, I mean to say, for it is a spiritual anointing, a spiritual baptism, a spiritual deposit and awakening.
All my younger life I was raise up in the church, but I was not of the church, or about the church’s business.
I knew about God and Jesus Christ, and about part of the bible, but I never had any personal inner conviction. Never a true faith other than an outside knowledge presented by others.
I could read the words on the page, sing the songs and hymns, repeat the prayers, and the Apostle’s Creed, but no life was in those things for me, they were strictly external performances.
Until, something very personal, very powerful, very undeniable, and very unexpectedly came in my darkest hour, I called, He answered, and the presence of a peace beyond my understanding, soon became my reality.
My world shifted on its axis, turned upside down, and became a strange and foreign to the world, new life.
The words on the bibles pages were absolutely alive to me,
understandable but in a new way, with clear and unquestionable wisdom, leading, they became my world, my place, my everything.
I woke with great expectations and reached for more of them every waking moment I wanted to be in them, and have them in me.
My entire old world view was exposed as a fraud, not a friend.
I did consider all of it as a waste in some ways, compared to what I found a value in my new world, as I found I was a stranger now to my old ways and daily learning to walk all over again.
A radical renovation was going on inside me and embracing and feeding it more and more, was all I now wanted to do.
How could I have been so empty, How could I have been so blind?
I was filled, I was given new sight.
New Ears to Hear, and New Eyes to See!
An almost unbearable joy was consuming me, it was contagious, outrageous, and I could not keep it hidden, for it revealed itself everywhere I went.
I was a Jesus Freak! Full blown out of my mind in love with anything about Him, or His Word.
My faith was given hands and feet.
I was serving Him, running after Him, seeking Him, and all because, “Jesus loves me this I know!”
That’s my take on, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
    Gary

  8. swwagner says:

YES…you can’t get enough of God’s Word!!! What a marvelous awakening! What a great new life and the wonderful mystery of salvation and redemption…He is mine and I am His.

  9. joycemb says:

Thank you Gary I’m smiling for the first time today. What a wonderful reminder of my own conversion! Truly a Spiritual awakening, thank you Jesus!

  10. street says:

    Spurgeon:

Let me remind you, beloved, that this rest is perfectly consistent with labour. In Hebrews 4:11 the apostle says, “Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest.” It is an extraordinary injunction, but I think he means, let us labour not to labour.

Our tendency is to try to do something in order to save ourselves; but we must beat that tendency down, and look away from self to Christ. Labour to get away from your own labours; labour to be clean rid of all self-reliance; labour in your prayers never to depend upon your prayers; labour in your repentance never to rest upon you repentance; and labour in your faith not to trust your faith, but to trust alone to Jesus.

When you begin to rest upon your repentance, and forget the Saviour, away with your repentance; and when you begin to pray, and you depend upon your prayers, and forget the Lord Jesus, away with your prayers. When you think you are beginning to grow in grace, and you feel, “Now I am somebody,” away with such spurious growth as that, for you are only being puffed up with pride, and not really growing at all. Labour not to labour; labour to keep down your natural self-righteousness and self-reliance; labour to continue where the publican was, and cry, “God be merciful to me a sinner.”

    –Charles Spurgeon,“The Believer’s Present Rest,” June 6, 1873, in Spurgeon’s Expository Encyclopedia, 13:176

  11. street says:

    Bunyan:

Truly, you must go to him that can make the eyes that are blind to see, even to our Lord Jesus, by prayer, saying, as the poor blind man did, ‘Lord, that I might receive my sight’; and so continue begging with him, till you receive sight, even a sight of Jesus Christ, his death, blood, resurrection, ascension, intercession, and that for thee, even for thee.

Objection: But, alas, I have nothing to carry with me; how then should I go?

Answer: Have you no sins? If you have, carry them, and exchange them for his righteousness. If you do but come to him, he will give you rest.

–John Bunyan, The Law and Grace Unfolded, in Works, 1:572

  12. SFDBWV says:

There is a period in Jewish history where God was silent for 400 years. No word from God for 400 years.

There being no record of those years it is only conjecture for me to say that for 10 generations people wondered if God had abandoned them or for some even if there was a God of their forefather’s Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Every believer has dry spells accompanied with doubts that gnaw at their gut. But Jesus made us a promise that we would never be abandoned or left alone by the giving of the Holy Spirit.

Why would an aborigine in some remote far removed place be converted to Christ? They have no Bible to believe in. All they have is the “word” from some missionary that there is a Savior that can change their lives and reunite them with God.

It is the miracle that the Holy Spirit provides in the heart of a convert as the seed of the “Word” takes root and finds a home in their heart. The written Word comes later as conformation in what their hearts now have etched in them. That Jesus is Lord.

Gary shared with us his awakening or “Rebirth” from being acquainted with Jesus to being in love with Him.

All of us who have experienced being “reborn” can relate to that story and the feelings that accompany it.

Unfortunately like many marriages, over time they lose some of the luster and it may take some effort to reignite the excitement again, but they are also a more adult relationship and more comfortable. Secular councilors would remind a married couple that communication is vital to keeping the marriage alive.

And so we come full circle to how important it is to “hear the Word of God” in our relationship with Him.

I am going to meditate on this as the day moves along and share what I can, when I can.

26 degrees and snowing, I have already plowed once and will again later this morning as time allows.

    Steve

  13. oneg2dblu says:

Can anyone here look at those 400 years of silence and not recognize that those were part of God’s Loving Discipline?

Or,take us for instance, approaching boldly the Throne of Grace through an ever pressing urgent Prayer, finding only silence instead of an immediate “Yes,” or a “No,” finding that we must accept a “Wait.”
A tempering, a forced resting, a place of reflection or meditation, intentionally placed upon us for us to grow in perseverance, patience, character, and even faith.

Sometimes silence can bring even more closeness when it is finally broken, or lingers more, for us to grow into a hearing of that still small voice, even in the presence of the ever boisterous clanging of the impatient unbelieving world around us.

Instead of four hundred years of silence from God, take just forty days of silencing yourself sometime. Fast from your ever needing to reply, and instead of hearing your own words rambling on all the time, you may hear with a more open ear from others, including God, even more than you currently allow yourself to now.
The silence is deafening, enlightening, and unexpectedly rewarding.
Just ask God’s People who have fasted, if that is not ever so true.
    Just a thought…

  14. oneg2dblu says:

let me be clear here, I am not just speaking to Steve, but to all who have ears to hear.
Blessing can abound from the most unexpected places…
    Be Blessed,

I was dragged(so to speak) to church as a child and I dragged my children to church as a young mother.BECAUSE my mentality was stuck in some childish state…that GOOD people went to church BAD people didn’t…I listened to sermon after sermon and I knew the jist of what I thought I suppose to know…after all ..Icould sing a lot of the hymns with the book for the words!! I was going through a living hell raising my children with no help ..only major hindrances from their father and I was very angry and bitter…but I still thought I was a GOOD GUY!!
One day the sermon was on…”He who says he loves God and hates his brother is a liar” I can’t explain the gut wrenching feeling that instilled in me that day.. That night in a dirty old factory..3 or 4am in the morning ..I started praying with all my heart….telling God I didn’t WANT to be that way..don’t remember my exact words but the jist of it was if I don’t want to be bad then why don’t You in all Your power …fix me!!! I can’t do it myself… I started shaking and had to go sit…I thought I was having a nervous breakdown….when it was over…I went to get a cup of coffee and I was like floating or walking lije I just got off a boat..and I was thinking all these loving thoughts about everyone I passed on the way!!! even the old man that made me so angry that night and reminded me that I hated my brother so to speak.
I think we can KNOW the bible from cover to cover, but when God speaks to you…..you KNOW without doubt.

  16. narrowpathseeker says:

sorry..what it is He wants you to know at that minute.

  17. remarutho says:

    Good Morning BTA Friends —

Mart, your question is important. You ask:

“…what is God really saying to us when Paul writes that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (or word of Christ) (Rom 10:17)?

“Is he requiring us to rightly interpret any one specific written text — or rather to hear what the whole story of Scripture ends up giving witness to—that the word that saves us—is the (message) of the Gospel of Christ?”

Hearing is the blessing of knowing God’s love in my soul, in Christ, sealed in the Holy Spirit. On the other hand, interpretation is a mind activity. Reading the Bible for information can be entirely without trust. It might even be a matter of curiosity — or (heaven forbid) gathering “evidence” for a point of a view/idea.

When I began to hear the voice of Jesus in my heart, I would sit up late at night, and rise early in the morning devouring chapter after chapter of Scripture seeking Him more and more. I still do.

I agree that Jesus’ calling is at times louder and at other times softer. Yet, I believe and trust Him more deeply than was possible at first. I have changed. Jesus is the same.

Lord willing, my witness (outward evidence of His inward grace to me) is more sure and more genuine than ever before.

May we all grow in our devotion to Jesus, to the salvation of those who hear us speak of Him!

    Blessings,
    Maru

  18. poohpity says:

In point C knowing that God’s word has good intended purposes touching hearts and minds to accomplished things for God.

Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

    You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.”

Here is another story Jesus told: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field. But that night as the workers slept, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat, then slipped away. When the crop began to grow and produce grain, the weeds also grew. “The farmer’s workers went to him and said, ‘Sir, the field where you planted that good seed is full of weeds! Where did they come from?’

“‘An enemy has done this!’ the farmer exclaimed.

“‘Should we pull out the weeds?’ they asked.

“‘No,’ he replied, ‘you’ll uproot the wheat if you do. Let both grow together until the harvest. Then I will tell the harvesters to sort out the weeds, tie them into bundles, and burn them, and to put the wheat in the barn.’”

  19. foreverblessed says:

Has God said? My real conversion was about what God really said about the 4th commandment.
I was brought up as a child, as many of you know, in a Sabbath keeping church. The real truth about the Sabbath was that it was the 7th day, period.
See yourself in a little town, everybody keeping the Sunday, being singles out, an outcast.
Now that command of the Sabbath Rest has a whole different meaning to me, a profound message to me, (thanks Street for that devotion of Hebr 4:11!
Actually Heb 4:9-10 was spelling to me! But now the next verse too! It is so hard to stop my own work! It is so hard to let go of zelf, – the I will do it- mode.
To me personally that command speaks loudly: stop with your own works Hebr 4:10,
Rest in the Work of Christ, and then I live in the Sabbath, I am never out of it! Never and never

  20. foreverblessed says:

Sorry for the typos, I now type on my smart phone, and I cannot stop the self correction! ( looks like not being able to stop on self-doing)
It makes the next nearest Dutch word, so spelling should have been: speaking.
And zelf is the Dutch word for self.
So you guys learn some Dutch!

  21. foreverblessed says:

So my point would be nummer b)
A word spoken directly to my heart!
And it is very personal, and I should not let any Christian get me away from that Word that God speaks to my heart.
And there in also lies the difference, leave each other alone, the Holy Spirit is my Boss, and yours in a very personal way too!

I remember our British participator, telling about his conversion, and the Holy Spirit told him, about being gay, that is of later business!
That was such a revelation to me!
God left that part till later?!
Great! But would I do that too as a fellow Christian, would I leave him alone on that point?

The Holy Spirit is so personal, Swagner, I am with you, do not let any Christian rob you of the freedom you have in Christ.

  22. street says:

    What has God Said

400 years of silence? Romans speaks of creation speaking. plus what the law and the prophets? i think there was silence because not many were listening. i am thinking, what was going on with the people when zachariah went into the temple. when mary was visited by the angle. i think of the widow and her son and naman the syrian. the woman at the well, now think about that for awhile a woman at the well. God met her at the well.

  23. joycemb says:

I read that during the 400 year period monks were in caves in isolation in the desert communing with God every day and transcribing scripture. Keeping alive on earth the faith given to the early fathers. I don’t think it’s any different today really, with the faithful keeping the word of God in our hearts and minds as we read and study this anchient manuscript we call the Word of God. What a joy to live in these times when we can look back at the Promise revealed instead of waiting. He’s here! Now!

  24. poohpity says:

I so wonder if anyone really cares about “What God has Said?” or if they read then just do what they want to do anyway? Or even if it makes any difference how the whole story fits together? If people do care what is it then that stops them from searching and seeking to grow in their relationship with God? It seems that many often try so much more to please other people than God who loves and cares for us so much more than any person could think of doing yet go out of their way to seek and search for affirmation from mankind.

  25. narrowpathseeker says:

NO Pooh…of course not …YOU are the only one that reads, applies and grows… we(those of us that you think are so far beneath you) just read to puff ourselves up

  26. oneg2dblu says:

Steve… you’ve hit on a huge point about us, the new believer’s of both the Old and the New Testaments, and our having the Holy Spirit.
The Jews only had their access to God through the temple, and through the inner most room, the Most Holy place. Through their ritual rights of cleansing, and through providing sacrifices for their sins as required by their laws.
But, they never had access as we do today, through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
So, much of their hearing was very limited to only the few who were set apart for the purposes of communicating with God directly, or a very select few who God chose to reveal himself to.
The gentile was all but blind and deaf to any access, the slave was to busy serving only his master, and women were even more segregated and stifled.
But through Christ, the field is leveled, the impassable way was opened up, the rough road made smooth, and the presence of God through His Spirit, became an ever constant one, or just a prayer away at best.
For us to know that God knows or needs and provides for us, before we even ask, and yet awaits that intimate communion with us… Awesome.
We know if there is any separation it is because we have moved away, or been dragged away, or enticed to wander like sheep without a shepherd.
Like a wayward prodigal, when we do come to our senses, we find we have a Father who sees us from a distance, and runs toward us with open loving arms.
Separation is a form of self-inflicted godly discipline, where God does not hold us captive, but allows us to wander away, only to find we have lost our way, and it us who needs to return.
    Gary

  27. street says:

poo said,”If people do care what is it then that stops them from searching and seeking to grow in their relationship with God?”

i have asked this same question in another way. in other words, what is the switch that turns the light on? is there a switch that turns the light off?

i think it goes back to the parable of the different soils and the sower. the soil must cling to the seed in order to bear fruit. the seed is the word of God.

self righteousness, pride, sin are definite fruit killers.

thinking further about searching or thirsting. i think this is in regard to salvation, not growth or good works or pleasing God. can you imagine the the joy Dad receives from His children working diligently to please Him?

thinking of job who never gave up hope in God, in the most difficult circumstances of life. it’s easy to hope when things are going good for you. adversity is another story. double down or bet everything on Jesus. you will not be disappointed. don’t give up, hold on the journey is incredible. walking together, but let Him lead, He knows the way.

  28. poohpity says:

So true street. There are times when I ask God are you really there? He says if you really do not think I am here why are you asking me. lol I wish I could say it is always smooth sailing but I have found that not to be true but it is God who remains faithful even when I am not.

Idolatry of trying to please people and not God happens to many. All humanity share in the same types of struggles, doubts, disappointments and yet He still pursues us. Coming out of Egypt and seeing all His provisions, protections, miracles and guidance then making a golden calf idol I used to say I did not understand but coming along further in knowing Him I now can understand but it does not seem to be dependent on our faithfulness but His. That we learn in His word, by His Word and from experience.

  29. oneg2dblu says:

narrowpathseeker… funny isn’t it that when He shows up, you do not doubt who He is or why He is there, you know something has been changed by Him, and there is no doubt that the timing was His, and the conviction, correction, blessing, or provision was both perfect, and unquestionably Divine.
The more we know Him, the more we recognize His Hand is always ready and able, and He is willing.
When we fall from the ugly tree, we don’t have to hit every branch on the way down, nor do we have to hit bottom, for the sooner we learn to reach out, the sooner the help comes, and the recovery!
I never grow tried of saying, “Thank You Lord!”
    Gary

  30. street says:

    1 Corinthians 2
14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.

    2 Corinthians 2
14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. 15 For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 16 to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things? 17 For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.

  31. street says:

same adversary different attach. his schemes are the same.

the fun part is asking and watching and waiting.
to me asking the right questions is the most important, i constantly think, what do i ask for? when i go to Him.
i can see why reading and waiting is so important. it’s getting the ground prepared. bunyan post already told us what to bring. Christ brings the rest.

Christians today disagree on what God is saying because all to often it is not God who is saying it. I know what it is to be a Christian, in that I am a believer, but a non Christian in that I all to often choose the parts from the bible that justified my beliefs.

It is easy for me to look at other Christians and be critical but as a wanderer I also know how easy it is to get from the narrow path on to the wider one.

If I have doubts at what God is saying it is because I muddyed the waters or allowed others to muddy them for me.

I now trust God but that is not down to faithfulness on my part but a growing realisation that I cannot depend on my own understanding anymore then I can depend on anyone else’s.

If I trust God today it is because I know it is He alone who is trustworthy.

It is because of despair at myself and those around me that has driven me to Him, for in the end it is where I know I am forgiven, and I have not found forgiveness like this in myself nor others, it is God who keeps His promises and my sadness comes in that I ever doubted Him.

What makes me sad today, is seeing so many, justifying their beliefs, by claiming God has said, what He never said, and it is, in my opinion, why God is so misunderstood.

I watched a programme where quakers when they enter their house of worship remain silent throughout and I thought if only we could all hold our tongues and listen to what God is saying ‘what a wonderful world this would be.’

  36. SFDBWV says:

A few years ago we had a fellow here who claimed to hear God speaking to him. The problem was what the voice he heard was saying to him. So disruptive and sacrilegious to our conversations that Mart had to block his participation. Without dissent everyone was offended by this fellows comments and his absence only enabled and encouraged those of us who remained to participate.

    Every voice isn’t from God.

Our spirits are fed; Jesus offers us sustenance in the Holy Communion by our taking in His symbolic blood and body by way of the wine and bread.

However what we read, watch, listen to or fill our minds with also feeds our spirits. So as Paul has said “Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God.”

The 400 years of silence I spoke of was the period between the entry into Egypt by Jacob and his sons and their ultimate deliverance from slavery by God through Moses and Aaron. For four hundred years all they had to hold onto was a story of a promise God made to their ancestors.

Jesus has also made promises to all of us as believers and followers of Him and one of those promises is that we have access to God anytime we want as well as being so close to God that we are interwoven with Him just as He Jesus is interwoven with the Father.

So God is going to speak to us through a long list of possibilities. In our hearts, to our spirits, from the mouths of others, from the written Word as well as the writings of others, from circumstances, in those moments we become aware and in dreams and visions as prophesied long ago.

The Spirit of Jesus is alive and living in our hearts and not only do we hear Him, but He divides by discernment what we hear contrary to His Spirit. It is for our own protection and empowerment so that we are not deceived, only seen by some as judgement because of their own guilt.

“What has God said?” would fill the world with books if all was written down. Remember though one way of recognizing is by seeing the opposite in contrast to it. What has God said in order to be believed must have conformation via the Holy Spirt or His providing conformation as to give credibility to what you heard.

A fresh coating of 7.5 inches of snow and 15 degrees. Winter is still with us and making us know it.

    Steve

  37. poohpity says:

Today is “Ash Wednesday” remember what God said and does it also apply to us today?, “I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.” also “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

  38. oneg2dblu says:

jeff1… I see your point about how holding the tongue may be useful and appropriate, because God is a God of order, and He has set limits on how we are to respond when gathered in His places of Worship.
But, in the world, we are to be that message bearing light which the world would love just to silence, and in that light, we must shine, speak out, live out, exude, and overflow.
No other name on earth or in heaven when spoken and heard, has more power than that of Jesus Christ Our Lord.
Thank You Jesus, Thank You Lord!
In the name of Jesus do we pray, do we find our hope, and do we find our Saviour.

  39. oneg2dblu says:

Steve says…”The Spirit of Jesus is alive and living in our hearts and not only do we hear Him, but He divides by discernment what we hear contrary to His Spirit.”

    Hallelujah!

Statements like that are all part of, and help fulfill, “Go into all the world and Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

That is using the Presence of the Living Water, when spoken into the world to those who will hear it and believe, that they will no longer be thirsty.
    Gary

  40. poohpity says:

Gary, misquoting what God has said seems to also be a problem and contrary to the leading of His Spirit. (Matt 28:19-20) I see your point Viv.

  41. remarutho says:

Good Morning Mart & Friends —

What is God saying through the Apostle Paul in Romans 10:17? It may be that God’s Word differs slightly according to the one who is hearing it.

Still, it seems to me that telling the story of what Jesus has accomplished in my own life — and in the lives of my circle of friends and community is a vital part of following Him. The story of the power of Jesus’ name spreads.

What God Has Said is all about a constantly expanding circle of God’s love offered in Jesus Christ to each one who hears about it — and responds to it — and turns to receive God’s mercy, forgiveness and everlasting life.

The Word of Christ is I AM:

    John 6:35, 48
    John 8:12, 9:5
    John 8:58
    John 10:9
    John 10:11
    John 11:25
    John 14:6
    John 15:1

    Joy on Ash Wednesday

Prayers please for me and my friends as I take care of my friends’ affairs after she had both knees replaced yesterday. Her 43 yr old son at home with TBI along with several other physical diseases and her two beloved canaries with 5 eggs! Trying to make sure the birds are still alive when she returns home as well as her sons appts is quite stressful but leaning hard on Jesus minute by minute it will be over before I know it! Thank you friends.

  43. street says:

dear maru, thanks for the reminder of the 7 I Am. i know lent starts today and i know we will cover the ground surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus. we will do it forever in accordance with the 3 perpetual feast of the Old Testament.

the last I AM is the one that caught my attention a few years ago. i thought the last I AM would be I AM the resurrection, but it is not! I AM the true vine is the last One! isreal is symbolized as a vine planted in a Holy Land by God. it did not bear fruit and was uprooted. now wild olive branches are being graphed in. looking forward to the natural branches being returned. the vine can be compared to the first adam, the second Adam is much better, The True Vine. His Grace and Truth never end nor the Peace or increase of His Kingdom.

i personally can’t wait till these are true festivals. celebrated by all the children of God.

  44. oneg2dblu says:

    pooh… how foolish of me.

How could I possibly see Steve’s overflowing of the spirit in him, to be anything likened, to an overflowing of the “living water.”

Or, have the audacity to think that in hearing and understanding what he actually said, that it could possibly be a very potent witness to others who might hear it and be equally blessed, thinking it just might bring others to receive it as all being a part of the Great Commission.

Sorry if I tainted his message in any way by overlaying my thoughts into it for you, or any others here.

I should have held by tongue, and when I try to quote the word here again, I’ll make sure to have my bible handy so I can be exact in every way, keeping the context as the golden rule, as to not threaten any message, or weaken any the word.

It was only my intention to glorify in my own thoughts what touched me into speaking at all.

    Gary

  45. SFDBWV says:

Hallelujah indeed Gary. Who can compare to our Lord? Who made heaven and earth, the author of life, can heal the sick and raise the dead, forgive sins and give eternal life in paradise.

Our Lord is indeed worthy of praise glory and honor and we do Him honor by our actions and compassion toward our fellow man.

When we present the Gospel it is He whom we present, we simply introduce others to the One we know and let the Word begin His work.

13 degrees and snowing, it looks like the weekend is going to be cold. I am glad for you Gary and our other friend in Florida, Peg, to be out of this winter weather.

Prayers for you and your friend Joyce.

    Steve

  46. oneg2dblu says:

So pooh, are you saying that living in the spirit requires that we all have to have a rote verbatim precision?

Or, could a Holy God in his Infinite Wisdom also allow us, imperfect by nature, some degree of latitude in our personal expression of His working through us?

  47. street says:

jeff said, “I watched a programme where quakers when they enter their house of worship remain silent throughout and I thought if only we could all hold our tongues and listen to what God is saying ‘what a wonderful world this would be.’ ”

even if my tongue is silent in church my mind and my heart can be far away from worship and the activities of fellowship. God is able to silence this too. lets be honest with God at all times.

  48. street says:

steve said,”The 400 years of silence I spoke of was the period between the entry into Egypt by Jacob and his sons and their ultimate deliverance from slavery by God through Moses and Aaron. For four hundred years all they had to hold onto was a story of a promise God made to their ancestors.”

good point steve. you made me see that we all see the Scriptures differently. the same words we use in talking about Scripture in two different time periods of the about the same length. you saw 400 in eygpt and i saw 400 in isreal. i wonder how many times this happens on a daily basis?

  49. street says:

i don’t believe for one minute there was not a remnant and light available for people to come to God.

He is as close to to you as the words in your mouth.

John 1:39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

    Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

  50. joycemb says:

Gary I too am guilty of paraphrasing scripture at times. You’re not alone.

  51. street says:

gary said,” So pooh, are you saying that living in the spirit requires that we all have to have a rote verbatim precision? ”

10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3 Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:

    “‘Among those who approach me
    I will be proved holy;
in the sight of all the people
    I will be honored.’”

    Aaron remained silent.

4 Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.” 5 So they came and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

6 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not let your hair become unkempt[d] and do not tear your clothes, or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community. But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. 7 Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting or you will die, because the Lord’s anointing oil is on you.” So they did as Moses said.

8 Then the Lord said to Aaron, 9 “You and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, 10 so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean, 11 and so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.”

12 Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the Lord and eat it beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13 Eat it in the sanctuary area, because it is your share and your sons’ share of the food offerings presented to the Lord; for so I have been commanded. 14 But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place; they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelites’ fellowship offerings. 15 The thigh that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the Lord as a wave offering. This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the Lord has commanded.”

16 When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offering[e] and found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked, 17 “Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord. 18 Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place, you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.”

19 Aaron replied to Moses, “Today they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?” 20 When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.

  52. poohpity says:

I had always thought that quotation marks denoted a quote but a paraphrase does not have them.

  53. poohpity says:

There is a big difference in teaching what God has said, that can also be a paraphrase but it says what it says use all of it because all of it is what God had intended for us to learn.

  54. oneg2dblu says:

If every time a partial bible versing, or wording is used just to intentionally mislead, then perhaps the spirit that has promoted it may be as you say, “a problem and contrary to the leading of His Spirit.”

But, I feel that anyone who wants to use quotation marks for the “emphasis of expression”” should have the artistic license to do so, without the “blog police” confronting them.

“You can Quote me on that!”

When I first came to use this format, I was using capital letters to do the same, and “you claimed,” that I was guilty of shouting!

Pleasing you has never been my forte.

I’m surprised you haven’t claimed out someone who uses the lower case “i” instead of an upper case “I,” saying that they display a false sense of humility.

Or, have i misunderstood you again?

I guess we all have our own, less than perfect, little ways of expression here, don’t we?

    Gary

  55. oneg2dblu says:

Actually if I remember correctly, when I was “Baptized,” in a Baptist Church many years ago, it was done using, “In the name of the Father the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
I do hope that the spirit of the Pastor, was not also a problem and contrary, or misleading anyone, by leaving out the remainder of that next verse.

Let’s move on to the next battlefield…

  56. oneg2dblu says:

street… thanks for sharing the history of those Jewish Religious Leaders, and how violating their duty, or means of exact holiness and righteousness as laid out by God, could cause their death.
I wonder why that same rigid use of all that religious duty, or precise instruction written by God, seems so lacking today?

Oh yeah, we are living in the Age of Grace.

I so desired that right living be right, and wrong living be wrong, just as it is defined in the word of God, and that, “Be Holy as I am Holy,” really mattered.

I could not understand why God did not seem to ever punish the wrong doers today who appear to be so successful in their wrong living.

God’s answer was quick and simple, and the punishment in a word was so obvious, “Separation.”

How simple when you really know God’s word, His unchanging word, “You can not serve two masters, you can not live by the flesh and the spirit at the same time, they are divinely separate and diametrically opposed, as you can only really serve one or the other.”

    my paraphrase

Choose for yourselves today, which you shall serve, or live by!

    Be Blessed, Gary

  57. poohpity says:

Do you really know God’s word Gary? The two masters it is speaking of in scripture are money and the Lord. (Matt 6:24 NLT; 2 Cor 10:3) Yes misquoting and misunderstanding often is prevalent. Oh by the way it was not me who said something to you about capital letters and shouting but I remember someone else did. And Yes you did also misunderstand me.

  58. poohpity says:

    Eph 6:12 NIV

  59. street says:

gary the thing in the passage that caught me heart was the father and the sons not being hungry when two sons had died foolishly. moses returned to grace in light of the father’s response to a time he was forbidden to mourn. eating would have been celebrating. Jesus said when you fast do not neglect your appearance. some how i understand this as a proper response of faith.

the point is we can be called on at anytime to give an account by anyone. the hope is we respond correctly to honor God.

i also think this galvanized in the priesthood of the danger to self and the people they ministered too. i think it would be hard to live next door to God….i think is safer to live in His house as a son or live in exile as one. almost home.

  60. street says:

gary said,”I could not understand why God did not seem to ever punish the wrong doers today who appear to be so successful in their wrong living.”

i think it comes down to God respecting our choices He freely gave us. sure, He is Holy and can judge at anytime. He still has plans in the works and His will is still getting done. so is sinful man. it’s just sinful man is living on death row and doesn’t even know it. where the children of God should know that they will never die. Jesus said so. gonna be different the first moments without a physical body maybe not, we will see.

  61. street says:

    poo posted Eph 6:12

thinking of peter rebuking Jesus after saying He was going to die. right after getting it so right.
peter had insight, but missed a few others. praying the light removes all the darkness like the blood removes all the sin. even then i still like mystery and Dad’s way of doing things. these mysteries are like gifts. we do wrap gifts for a reason.

  62. street says:

There was a farmer who grew excellent quality corn. Every year he won the award for the best grown corn. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked.

“Why sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.”

So is with our lives… Those who want to live meaningfully and well must help enrich the lives of others, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all…
    -Call it power of collectivity…
-Call it a principle of success…
-Call it a law of life.

something to think about “two sowers or two masters” and both are very contagious

  63. street says:

be careful it was not Scripture. the point for me is contagious. are you contagious? i think we all are.
trek fans shields up or Scripture up.

  64. joycemb says:

Thank you for your wisdom street. I’ve just lately read the story about the farmer spreading good seed around. So true. Reminds me of a blogger I read lately that wondered if our use of scripture shines light or divides. I think it’s the same point as the farmer spreading good seed so all are blessed including himself/herself.

Love the thought of gift wrapping! I think we forget sometimes that there are better things to come! I know I do.

  65. foreverblessed says:

Joyce, I pray for you and your friend, and her son. ( I had to look up what TBI is, traumatic brain in jury).
I pray for him even more!

You all have been commenting, while it was night this side of the ocean.
I was wondering why Street would give that passage on Aaron, but it was because of the Grace Moses chose over the law.

The same as David, eating the showbread, which was forbidden by law, and yet allowed by Grace.

The book of the Two Covenants by Andrew Murray was very helpful to me. Why was God so specific, and seemingly so rigid, as to the killing of the two sons?
Why this Torah, why all these rules? Why was it given, when it would be dismissed anyway?

Murray explains it as the old covenant being very useful in preparing us for the new covenant.
We would try and try, and ever fail, till we get excausted, and throw ourselves at God’s mercy: You work it out in us, we cannot!

And there we are at the position God wants us to be:
Humility, a man of poor spirit, the man who knows he cannot rely on himself.
( I am thinking of Jeff right now, good place to be)

THAT is the place God wants us to be:
NOW He can work in us.
The New Covenant is God promising to do His part, and the Holy Spirit doing our part. Do we do nothing? Well, not doing is the hardest part, as we are proud, and full of self-will.
Getting rid of our old self is the labor we do, but God is at our side,
As many as is the sand of the sea, as many as there are stars in heaven, so much God will stand by me.

  66. narrowpathseeker says:

Street… as Joyce said, THANK YOU for your Wisdom! For a time I had difficulty understanding your manner of writing and I didn’t know quite what to make of it… This morning it was like the gift of your Wisdom was unwrapped for me and I am Blessed.. Thank you…you are running neck “n” neck with Steve in the Wisdom and Inspiration department.

  67. jeff1 says:

You are so right Foreverblessed, it is the hardest part because my opinions get in the way but you have said what I so often forget that God is by my side and I find that as soon as I take that thought and hold it captive that I find peace within myself.

I find that the more and more that I remind myself it is God who is driving me and not me driving Him that I have peace. When I try to run ahead of God it is when I get into difficulty as you say my self will getting in the way again.

Thank you, thank you so much, for your understanding and your assurance that God will never leave me and I will never stop trying to rid myself of the old self so that He can pursue His will through me and make me useful for His Kingdom, to be an instrument of His peace in a land that has known much war would be my heart’s desire.

  68. SFDBWV says:

    February 11, 2016
The Living and the Written Word
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

The Holy Scriptures and the person of our Lord Jesus Christ are so inseparably bound together that whatever calls into question the integrity and authority of one correspondingly casts aspersions on the other. Let us not be guilty of saying that the written Word and the incarnate Word are in all aspects the same, but the Bible does clearly reveal Christ as “the Word . . . made flesh, [who] dwelt among us” (John 1:14). “And his name is called The Word of God” (Revelation 19:13).

In carefully worded arguments, Christ time and again called attention to the fact that the teachings of the Old Testament Scriptures were actually teaching about Him. “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. . . . For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?” (John 5:39, 46-47). “If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead” (Luke 16:31).

Therefore, those who diligently search the Scriptures find in them sufficient testimony to Christ, and where there is faith in the witness of Scripture, there will be faith in Christ and His words. But if men reject the testimony of Scripture, they will not even be convinced by His miraculous resurrection from the dead.

Christ claimed that all of Scripture pointed to Him. On the road to Emmaus, He taught that all three popular divisions of the Old Testament traced one progressive Messianic revelation. To understand the New Testament, we must know the Old, for both tell the same story, each amplifying the other. They are forever inseparable. JDM

I received this today and though some of you may enjoy it. I have been busy with snow and winters work. For those of you who may have read “Dante’s Inferno” what we have here is “blue hell” six degrees f windy and snowing.

    Steve

  69. oneg2dblu says:

Pooh… yes, you picked and chose first a wording that explains only the battle of humanity with God vs Mammon. Matthew 6:24

That cited verse is one that does match the word “master,” but it was not my intended premise.

However, I was not using a book and chapter and verse, which you have cited, but, using another part of the word in paraphrased sense which says, that we live or die by the flesh or the spirit, and how you live is what determines which one you choose to serve, or has mastered you.

Genesis 4:4, ” If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”

Like you say, only God knows the heart.

    Have a blessed day,
    Gary

  70. SFDBWV says:

Agreeing fully with you Pearl in streets excellent testimony this morning, I too am blessed by its wisdom.

I love it when we are in a concert of encouragement and loving fellowship here on BTA as it certainly shows in contrast to how much better it is to see the best in and of others rather than be exposed to the other.

To perfectly answer the question, “What has God said” one would have to be God as I believe He speaks to us one on one at times and what He has to say is meant just for us at that time.

Before the giving of the Holy Spirit He spoke through His prophets, sent angels and it is usually accepted appeared as the man Jesus even before His birth. As stated in Daniel concerning the fiery furnace, though at that appearance He said nothing, His presence said plenty.

    Out of time.

    Steve

  71. poohpity says:

Gary did you mean Genesis 4:7? Yes Abel gave the first and best of what he had and Cain just gave the least he could which one showed that God meant the most to them? So it seems greed was crouching at the door. Yes we can also apply that to “What has God Said?” by only taking parts of scripture to make our point(Cain) or trying to see God’s point contained in the whole of scripture (Abel).

  72. poohpity says:

Gary it seems to be more about honesty. To admit one has not read the scripture nor really wants to for whatever reason but has a heart for God example like Viv is admirable because of that pure honesty but for one to present themselves as one who is well versed in the bible but isn’t yet brags that they are and doesn’t seem to even know a glimpse of the character of God, which is really all we have, is just not honest. God knows which category we each fits in so what others believe about us is just not that important. God knows those who’s priority is Him and who’s priority is self wanting the praise of other people and that seems to be what is important.

  73. joycemb says:

Steve said: “I love it when we are in a concert of encouragement and loving fellowship here on BTA as it certainly shows in contrast to how much better it is to see the best in and of others rather than be exposed to the other.”

I certainly agree Steve. Isn’t that how God sees us in Christ as perfect! If we see others through that Lense there should be peace and harmony. Those outside of the flock are intent on causing division and strife. They need prayer and also silence as street talked about earlier so hopefully they will hear Gods voice as Paul did and be changed. As Pearl mentioned how she suddenly understood what street was saying.:-) It’s their only Hope, and of course the battle rages in the heavenly realm. Our armor is Truth, faith, righteousness, salvation, peace etc. which we only have because of Christ Jesus. There’s no other way to walk out this journey successfully.

Spurgeon talks about Christ-likeness as being literally like Christ in today’s devotional. To think kindly, speak kindly and do kindly. He too had a lot of wisdom.

  74. joycemb says:

More like yellow hell here- minus 9 f now and minus 22 tonite. Although it’s sunny as usual when it’s very cold. Dreaming of spring flowers warms me up a bit though!

Mart said: Is he requiring us to rightly interpret any one specific written text— or rather to hear what the whole story of Scripture ends up giving witness to—that the word that saves us—is the (message) of the Gospel of Christ?

I was just reading Philippians and Colossians and was struck again by Paul’s response to those who were making his imprisonment tougher: Philippians 1:15-19 NLT Paul said he didn’t care about the motives of other preachers but REJOICED and would continue to rejoice that the message of Christ was bring preached. I pray I can also do this eventually and get past my need to be right about how I do bible interpretation. Lot of grace from Paul toward people like me :-)

  76. jeff1 says:

Yes, Joyce I have had strong opinions since I was young but my earthly father taught me about the type of humility that Paul had. He had been right in his parenting and had tried to teach me what was right but when I eventually came to my senses he never once said I told you so because he had just wanted me to see the truth for my own sake and not to boast that he was righteous for my father looked to God for his righteousness and knew that God was the source of his good choices while I thought I knew better at making my own choices.

Humility is hard to find but I have come to know it in others and those who have it draw others to God for all the right reasons and glorify God in doing so.

  77. oneg2dblu says:

pooh… I am sorry that I thought it was you how called me out about my use of the upper case years ago, which by the way, when I was so informed I took it as correction, and subsequently adjusted my volume accordingly.

  78. narrowpathseeker says:

Yesterday, I was feeling very low and distanced from God because of my anger and lack of effort to keep it in check. After much prayer I felt somewhat better as usual. This morning I was still ok and then read Street’s post and felt quite Blessed. Then I got to my devotionals and morning prayer…and there was like a weight lifted off my chest by this afternoon…when I thanked the Lord …I got a very strong thought that someone or more than one of my friends here at BTA prayed for me. I don’t know who or how many but I thank you…someone is a very powerful prayer warrior. I haven’t felt this peace in a very long time..

  79. oneg2dblu says:

According to the word found in Galatians 6:8, as I understand it, though your understanding may be different, there are certain conditions, or work, if you will, with which we do have to be a part.

    An accountability if you will.

If we chose to walk/live/or practice the things/desires of the flesh, by that flesh we will reap destruction.

But,if we chose to walk/live/practice by the things of the Spirit, by that Spirit, will will reap eternal life.

So to me,, how we walk/live or what we chose to practice, our lifestyle, is really a law unto itself.

    We reap what we sow…

The one who lives as a slave to the flesh, is certainly being mastered by the flesh…

The one who lives as a slave to the Spirit, is certainly mastered by that Spirit.

So, we still do get to actively chose which is to be the master of our lives, by our own free will.

Here is the exact wording of the Gideon’s Bible I have in my hand…

“The one who sows to his own flesh will harvest ruin from his flesh; while the one who who sows for the Spirit will harvest eternal life from the Spirit.”

Now, there are verses that precede and follow that very basic law.

    The preceding verse says:
“Make no mistake God will not be mocked.”

    The following verse says:
“Let us do what is right without tiring of it,
for at its proper time we shall reap if we do not give up.”

Narrow, you had such a great testimony 2 days ago!!
And the next dat you had a low. You have good company, Elijah was the same! I have not prayed for you, but I am now!
I was especially touched by the fact that you said you felt this inner love for almost everybody, even that man you hated!
I pray that you will have that again, God’s love! And I pray that I may have that too!

  81. jeff1 says:

If you believe that you get to heaven through works Gary then you and I know a very different Gospel. I may not know my bible but I was taught that my Salvation is secure by who Jesus Christ is for He died for my sins and I take that personal.

He died that we might be forgiv’n
He died to make us good,
That we might go at last to Heav’n,
    Saved by His precious blood.

I listened to others and tried to keep the ten commandments to get to heaven but failed and so having been convicted by the Holy Spirit I have given my will to God to work through me for I know He will do a much better job then I ever could.

  84. narrowpathseeker says:

foreverblessed…the testimony about being convicted during a service on anyone saying they love God and hate a brother is a liar, was about 40 years or more ago.. I didn’t even know what had happened to me at the time…an elder Christian woman that I worked with cried when I told her the story and told me I had been visited by the Holy Spirit..I thought I had neared a nervous breakdown and just gave up the hate myself… ignorance has been a pretty steady traveling companion for me…it departs and meets up with me a few bends down the road.. :-) anyway all the love didn’t last enveloped in diverse and difficult times, but I learned to pray longer and more often and to resist the anger a little better..and still on the battlefield with that, but I just had a wonderful victory and hoping it will last. thank you for the prayers..

  85. oneg2dblu says:

jeff1… Please remember I was only quoting scripture, I did not pen those words, they were written to the believer’s in Galatia in a letter of warning, from the great grace teacher, Paul.
So, they are written to believers, and don’t all believers, believe they are saved?

Why would Paul cite such things, if he did not believe what he was saying was true?

Was that a works/salvation message or not?

And what do you believe about his thoughts, about who will not enter the kingdom of God?

Was Paul telling those believers a lie?

    Galatians 5:16,17,18,19

Or, was Paul being misled by another spirit, falsely adding burdens on those believers, or was he just speaking the plain truth in love?

Do those scriptures trouble you, or challenge you in any way at all?

How can any of us just ignore Paul’s words?

    And, in Revelation 21: 5,6,7,8

“He who was seated on the throne said, I am making everything new!

Then he said, Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.
He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be hig God and he will be my son.
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murders, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters, and all liars- their place will be the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.

Then, in verse 27, “Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

Revelation 22:12, 13, 14, 15 “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.
Blessed are those whom wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.
Outside are the dogs, those who [practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murders, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
I Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and Offspring of David, and the Bright Morning Star.

Are we all blind and deaf to the parallels of the message from Paul, and the like-minded words in Revelation?

Or, can we connect the dots, see the same premise, by the same Spirit, which developed both of these?

Reaping and sowing are not about the Ten Commandments, or the law, which we are not under, they are a law unto themselves, which should express to us that we have an accounting coming, which is based on what we sow.

In the presence of those two witnesses, or those two same minded voices, how can we all just ignore any scripture we would rather not hear?

  86. foreverblessed says:

    Narrow, thanks for sharing!
We walk by faith, and not by sight! So it is with me, there are a few times that I was filled with an enormous peace. It was so good, “all is well” amidst all different kinds of problems.
But that great peace is not here now, in my mind.
I believe CS Lewis grote about it, that God is very close in the beginning, and then retreats.

    And still learning.
What to do with all these verses Gary gives? I know them by heart, but I do not need them at this moment. I have told him often, but he goes on.
Gary, you gave your testimony earlier on, how full of peace you were, and love.
I have told you before, if you have to waren, do it like Spurgeon, his writing is full of love of Jesus, of encouragement, one after the other, and then sonewhere he has a warming, and he finishen with encouragement!

It is unpallatable to have all these warning verses along a line. They are in the bible, yes, but that does not mean you have to put them down here, one after the other!
Again, look at how Spurgeon does it. A flaming love for Jesus shines through them.

I need the ones that confirm I am His daughter!
And I am His! I do not want to lose my faith in Him, period.
God bless you with His Wisdom, and above all, love!

  92. jeff1 says:

It would seem to me Gary that you do not believe that a believer who does not know scripture is not saved for He does not know God’s word.

I know from the Gospel what I learned as a child although I wandered by listening to men who where biblical taught but my father warned me that their spirit was not God given I failed to take my fathers Godly advice.

I am not an example of a believer who has walked side by side with God for I have either dallied behind or ran away ahead and caused myself much distress.

My father (God rest Him) was a man who walked in step with God and His choices where God inspired. My father to my knowledge did not study scripture but prayed and looked to God when making his decisions and it reflected in his lifetime.

I will not tell you I understand what I do not understand as I am not an authority on the bible or what Paul said.

I was raised to trust the bible but to be lead by Christ’s teaching. I have not in my lifetime found that those who batter followers over the head with the bible have made an impact on me.

It is those who recognise another’s man need and are led by the spirit that have made a difference in an unforgiving world.

I believe God works through His followers and also in non believers in ways we do not always see and I also believe that it is God who is merciful and forgiving when we fail for I have not found forgiveness in myself or others but in God alone.

When I am honest with God He reveals truths to me but I am flesh and as such have weaknesses that God endures because He loves me.

I am being honest with myself and while I knew men like my father who were faithful to God, I, myself, have a tendency to wander and while you, Gary, may say I deserve hell, it is God who says otherwise so if yo don’t mind Gary I am taking God’s word on my Salvation for it is the Gospel that I was raised on.

I will not stop trying to do right but I have or never will believe that my trying makes a difference to my Salvation.
It is a heart that knows it owes God so much but can not repay what God has already done for them that wants to please Him but knows full well that it is a heart being transformed by God Himself.

  93. jeff1 says:

It is in knowing that I am fallible and needs God’s guiding Spirit that has renewed my thinking and stopped me being an insufferable, self righteous human being into becoming a half decent one.

It is when I start to see the flaws in myself that I realize the generosity of God’s grace and then want to extend it to those still in so much need of it.

  94. poohpity says:

Faith comes by hearing the word of God, that has been authored by God about Jesus Christ which gives the person of God the message of the Gospel to preach. It seems that we have been given the message that God wants us to share by His command to share this Gospel with His power but a person has to be reborn of God to know what to share and upon hearing it others will come to believe. So it would seem one has to know what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is first.

Abraham heard God and believed being counted to him as righteousness.

  95. poohpity says:

It would seem that everything about God comes by hearing about Him and then believing, it is all done in faith. “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world– our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?…NASB (1 John 5:3-5 NLT)

  97. oneg2dblu says:

jeff1… thanks for your time, your answer, and your honesty.

I know how difficult it can be to pressed out one’s beliefs or challenged for one’s words, but isn’t it exactly what the word says we Followers of Christ will encounter in this ever darkening world?

Meaning that only sometimes what the word actually says, it actually means?

Now, that we have established that some do “not believe” that one reaps what one sows, if they have ever had a moment of faith that saved them, and that now only the promises apply.

    To All others…

Who can boldly list all the other, now to be ignored warnings and challenges found in the word of God, which are all still part of the full message, still remaining there, forever, and for a reason?

Did God say, we are to adhere to both?

    Gary

Whatever you think I may have said, which by the way I did not say anything about you going to hell, I merely asked, were those two testimonies I cited, possible false witness, or from another spirit?

  98. poohpity says:

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10 NIV

  99. poohpity says:

One has to really know what God says or else they are just false witnesses to a false doctrine about false beliefs. It is not about knowing God but having the Spirit of the living God within them that one is able to speak truth but you have to know the truth to be set free from false doctrine. John 8:47

  100. oneg2dblu says:

Jeff1… “It would seem to me Gary that you do not believe that a believer who does not know scripture is not saved for He does not know God’s word.”

I never said that, for I know it is in knowing Jesus Christ, and knowing is not a one time event, it is an ever growing, active, alive, current relationship, that actually saves.

Not book knowledge, but, much much more invasive, a life changing constancy.

It is certainly not a once/always type event, according to the scriptures.

    I john 2:1-6 NLT

    I John 2:1-6

  107. poohpity says:

    Could this be to what you were referring to Joyce;

    1 John 3:4-10 NLT;
Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God. 5 And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him. 6 Anyone who continues to live in him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know him or understand who he is.

7 Dear children, don’t let anyone deceive you about this: When people do what is right, it shows that they are righteous, even as Christ is righteous. 8 But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil. 9 Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life[a] is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God. 10 So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers[b] does not belong to God.

  108. oneg2dblu says:

Could this be what you are referring to Joyce,

    1 John 1:5-10
“The message we heard from Him and announce to you is this: God is light and in Him there is no darkness whatever. If we say we enjoy fellowship with Him while we walk i n the dark, we are lying and not practicing the truth.

If however, we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, then we enjoy fellowship with one another, and the blood of His Son Jesus cleanses us from all sin.

If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deluding ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If we say, “We have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His word is not in us.”

Wow, what bunch of conditional, “If,” verses those are?

Almost sounds as “if” there really are some conditions that we must constantly adhere to, even though some here would rather think otherwise, as in believing all their sin is already forgiven, past, present, and future.

Perhaps the author of 1 John was also mis-informed about these scriptural truths by some false teaching about unconditional forgiveness, or salvation.

I am just a sucker for the constant daily contact with Our Lord, instead of hanging out with the already been there done that crowd, or the had my moment of faith thing, when I was a kid.

I guess it is those ever questioning late bloomers like myself, and who willing to share even the challenging or convicting word, who are the real problem makers.

    And so it is

Like being around your spouse, he does not have to warn me daily, you beter love me or else….
What a lousy relation that would be.
He sees the love in my eyes, and the care.

But, say, when a partner is not in love anymore, and not involved, then, yes then…. a warning would be appropriate.

So, if soneone overhere is getting lukewarm, yes, then warn.

But other wise, tell of your passionate relation with Jesus, what comfort it is to be with Him.

Look to Me and be saved Isa 45:22 (KJV)

  112. jeff1 says:

Sometimes when I find it difficult not to feel alone I listen
to gospel songs like this one and remind myself that with God I am never alone.

When you walk through a storm
    Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm
    There’s a golden sky
And the sweet, silver song of a lark.
    Walk on, through the wind
    Walk on, through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
    And you’ll never walk alone,
    You’ll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
    And you’ll never walk alone,
    You’ll never walk alone….

  113. oneg2dblu says:

Like I always say, if it does not apply to you, then it does you no harm, it does not convict you, it does not redirect you or challenge you, it only displays itself as being another part of the whole truth found in the word of God, given to all, for a reason.

Just light the red light at an intersection, it does no one any harm, unless they try violate its authority.

    Gary

  114. oneg2dblu says:

Wouldn’t you think that if all Christians really changed from living in the darkness to walking in the light, the rest of the fallen world would see it, and they would be lined up waiting for their chance to be changed?

Truth is they see and hear that darkness is still prevalent,
that the blind are still blind, the lame are still lame, and the world and all its problems has found its comfortable place within the church as well.

Divorce rates are the same, even though God hates divorce.

Sexual immorality finds its way into the pulpits and boardrooms, and there is a huge divide in orthodoxy as each denomination has its own steadfastness of interpretation of the word that will not be broken by others, until the world is taken out of the church and there is a fully restored, one true following of One God, One Church, One Baptism.

Where today, one says, we believe in sprinkling, another says it must be full immersion.
One says we Baptize infants, the other says, one must be mature enough to be fully cognizant before one can understand what they are doing.
One says the scripture clearly says, we should only call God by the name Father, and the other says, each parish has at least one or more which we call Father.
One says we pray to Mary, one says we pray to God, and the other says we pray only to Jesus.
One says, there is only one day that is the Sabbath, and the other claims it something else.
One has open communion and the other closed.
One requires membership, and another says we have no membership roles.
One allows women to hold the highest leadership positions, and others forbid women to do so.

The division is endless because the church is run by imperfect people, making imperfect choices, and teaching imperfect lessons to support their imperfect doctrines.

Then, we believers come here with all our past church experience as our filter, and with all life’s varied and complex past luggage, and we expect to find here, complete harmony?

No, but we do find we are a fractured family, brought together for a reason, and each one has an opportunity to share what they bring into the fold.

Unless, we silence them, harass them, excommunicate them, call them liars, or say they are from the devil, or call them demeaning names, or just plain ignore them, or worse yet, gang up on them.

Yep, we have see it all right here, we are just like the world, we are all victims of the human condition, but we also claim to be in Christ.

Who is our common ground, our hope, our only Salvation.

    Gary

  115. poohpity says:

Gary, but isn’t that the very reason we cling to God’s grace and mercy. If that were to be how we chose to live life showing grace and mercy wouldn’t that show a closer walk with God? The closer we walk with Him the more He shines His light within us to see our own sin clinging more tightly to His grace but then the further away from Him we get then we will be quicker to see and point out the sin in others clinging more tightly to judgement and condemnation.

Yes there is a condition; if we believe.

  116. poohpity says:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Eph 2:8-10

If it were possible to be perfect we would not need grace and we could boast in how good, pure, right living and wonderful we are but we aren’t. So rather than trying to be perfect and expecting others to be we are given good works to do that show our faith. One of those good works is to show grace, forgiveness and mercy to others because that is what Christ has done for us.

    Clarkes notes says;
Hatred – Εχθραι· Aversions and antipathies, when opposed to brotherly love and kindness.

Variance – Ερεις· Contentions, where the principle of hatred proceeds to open acts; hence contests, altercations, lawsuits, and disputes in general.

Emulations – Ζηλοι· Envies or emulations; that is strife to excel at the expense of another; lowering others to set up one’s self; unholy zeal, fervently adopting a bad cause, or supporting a good one by cruel means. Inquisitions, pretending to support true religion by torturing and burning alive those who both profess and practice it.

Wrath – Θυμοι· Turbulent passions, disturbing the harmony of the mind, and producing domestic and civil broils and disquietudes.

Strife – Επιθειαι· Disputations, janglings, logomachics, or strife about words.

Seditions – Διχοστασιαι· Divisions into separate factions; parties, whether in the Church or state.

Heresies – Αἱρεσεις· Factions; parties in the Church separating from communion with each other, and setting up altar against altar. The word, which is harmless in itself, is here used in a bad sense. In stead of αἱρεσεις the Slavonic has σκανδαλα, scandals, offenses or stumbling-blocks.

Less flesh and more spirit is the answer to the problems here and in the local churches. I’m working on it.

  118. joycemb says:

BTW, yes God’s gives us grace to work on these things.

    Good Morning BTA —

What has God said? Thanks to the one here who offered words of comfort from the Lord:

“Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: For I am God, and there is none else.” Isaiah 45:22 KJV

May you have rest and refreshing in Jesus for the new day.

    The Gospel of Christ in a song;

    “Jesus Saves”

    Jesus saves [2x]
    From the cross
    To the grave
    Jesus saves [3x]
    From the cross
    To the grave
    Jesus saves

    You died for me
    The ultimate sacrifice
    For me
    Whom you had never seen
So my voice I will raise
    Testify that

    Jesus saves [2x]
    From the cross
    To the grave
    Jesus saves [3x]
    From the cross
    You saved my life
    To the grave
    You raised me up
    And your resurrection power
Saved me from the sting of death
    Jesus saves [4x]

Im a living witness that he does [2x]
He can save you from death too [2x]
From the sting of rejection and pain
From the bondage of depression he will
Oh, I’m a living witness that he does
    Oh yes he does
    For the bible said
    If I be lifted up
I’d draw all men to me
    If I be lifted up
I’d draw all men to me

    He’s drawing us [3x]
    Yes he’s drawing me [4x]
    Somebody reach out for it
He’s pulling you on out of the muck and the murry clay
    Sin has no weight
    That the glory cannot handle
    Jesus saves [2x]

  123. jeff1 says:

Do I believe ‘What God Said’. Yes, that He died for sinners.
What do I do that seems right to me but is wrong to God!
I differentiate in what sin is greater than another.

God said I will avenge, yet there is something in me and I see it in others that wants to see justice done. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

I know from my earthly father that he understood matters that I did not understand and this was one of them.

My father trusted God in that he voted ‘Yes’ for the ‘Peace Process’ which in effect meant that the Government and terrorists had done a deal so that the violence would end.

I voted ‘No’ because I felt those responsible for atrocities should serve their sentence.

The ‘Yes’ voters win and the deal was done.

I voted with my conscience but I believe my father proved he was a righteous in trusting God as did the majority of voters.

The violence is now limited to a fraction group and the younger generation has a chance of changing the future.

How did my father know what was the righteous choice while I did not?

My father had seen war at first hand as he had served in the second word war and also on the Palestine Police. I noticed that most men who knew what it was like on the battlefield had a yearning for peace and I also noted they never talked of their war experiences. It was my mother told me of my fathers.

I am thankful that God has men like my Dad who know to make the right choice and once again I am a disappointed in myself in that I did not trust God as my father did.

If anyone needed Christ to die for sinners, it was I, for when I look back on my choices they where made from my selfish desires and not a heart searching for God’s righteousness.

God reveals truths to me when I am honest with Him but I must be prepared to accept that truth.

I once heard a Protestant say that Roman Catholics attend their place of worship better than we do because they need to as they have more sins to confess.

I thought at that moment then maybe I should have been a Roman Catholic.

God only works mysteriously to those who are blinded by His works.

  124. joycemb says:

3 See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him. 2 Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is.
    I john 3:1-2 NLT

  125. poohpity says:

I think one of the greatest lessons one can learn is that at a specific time in our lives we made the best decision with the information we had. Would I now make the same decision with what I have learned since then, no. Would I make a decision in the future the way I would today, probably not because I will have more information than what I have today. That seems to be a reason to look at my failures as lessons to learn rather than thinking I am a failure and beating myself up over them.

Psalm 32:5, 103:12; Isaiah 43:25 If God after confession remembers our sin nor more it would then seem that the adversary sure would enjoy us reliving them to keep us suffocated and unproductive.

  126. joycemb says:

Mistakes don’t define us neither do our sins, God defines us as His sons and daughters.

  127. street says:

Apart from our activities on Sunday and our conformity to external codes of do’s and don’ts, the world doesn’t notice much difference. All they are left to see in Christianity is the loss of a day of leisure on the weekend and the denial of common pleasures. Few people find that kind of Christianity compelling.

    Joe Stowell

  128. street says:

thinking of the refiners fire. God is the refiner of men, He Is and He will not harm the metal. His purpose is to remove dross. to increase value and worth to Him not to the metal. the closer we are to God or the more we value God the hotter the fire. the fire is not of our own choosing, but is from God. paul rejoiced in trials tribulation and testing. for God is very close and he dose not change! we change as the dross is removed.

be thinking about this,” what does God replace the dross with?”

  129. remarutho says:

Good Morning Mart & Friends –

Have to agree with Dr. Stowell, Street! Unless we are showing up in the lives of those around us who are perishing, we make zero impact on this lost and lonely world.

This is, in my view, the witness of Jesus’ blood sacrifice. The Good News of that sacrifice needs to reach far beyond a meeting hall or sanctuary. Nobody knows what God has said until (s)he sees and hears it in our lives.

    Joy all day!

gary said,” Wouldn’t you think that if all Christians really changed from living in the darkness to walking in the light, the rest of the fallen world would see it, and they would be lined up waiting for their chance to be changed?”

‘They hated Me without a cause.’

gary the wicked are rich, they are righteous, they are wise, they need nothing and they are so dead.

rich in love, rich in mercy, rich in grace, rich in faithfulness, rich in Christ ring a bell?

  131. street says:

dear maru i think of the fragrance people smell around the children of God. paul speak in 2Chinthians 2 : 15 For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; 16 to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things? 17 For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.

it hard when people smell death. cheer up He has overcome the world and will bring you home safe and sound. tam, hebrew love that word.

  132. remarutho says:

    Amen, Street!

Jesus looks differently upon our ups and downs than we do! God has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” (Hebrews 13:5)

May the fragrance of life be wafted everywhere!

    Psalm 12: (NASB)
    5
“Because of the devastation of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will set him in the safety for which he longs.”

    6
    The words of the Lord are pure words;
As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.
    7
    You, O Lord, will keep them;
You will preserve him from this generation forever.

  134. street says:

steve said,”To perfectly answer the question, “What has God said” one would have to be God as I believe He speaks to us one on one at times and what He has to say is meant just for us at that time.”

this verse caught my attention today in relation to this question. 1Corinthians 12: “7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

we know God still speaks, and we believe He speaks when we go to church to hear Him. yet all people who go do not hear and apply it the same way. yet they are to apply it for the common good. each in there own level of maturity and each with there own abilities or gifts.
yet God spoke once to a corporate body. same as when we read His Word.

  135. jeff1 says:

One of the hymns I don’t hear much these days beautiful as it is:

    Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
    all thy faithful mercies crown.
    Jesus, thou art all compassion,
    pure, unbounded love thou art;
    visit us with thy salvation,
    enter every trembling heart.

    Come, almighty to deliver,
    let us all thy life receive;
    suddenly return, and never,
    nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee without ceasing,
    glory in thy perfect love.

    Finish then thy new creation;
    pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation
    perfectly restored in thee:
    changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love and praise.

  136. joycemb says:

Mart said: “Yet, we now face a different set of problems. Today, when it comes to interpreting and applying Scripture, if we don’t say, or at least wonder, “has God– really said or meant that for us?” we are going to hand over our minds to whoever is using the Bible for our help or harm.”

My thought is that there are Biblical principles that cover today and yesterday. Contextual exegesis gives us insight into the intended audience. Yet, the scriptures remain for us, a very different audience. So your question is how to discern what is to be carried over, and what is to be dismissed as historical comment? Not ‘dismissed’ but categorized is a better word. Are we really “handing over our minds”? If we are I find that a scary thought. However, doesn’t the Holy Spirit figure in here somehow? It must. The word of God is inspired by God and useful for correction, instruction, and training in righteousness so says Paul to Timothy.
    I
Yet Christians remain divided on issues of salvation, redemption, and grace even! One Holy Spirit yet so many differences. My brain is in a knot. I trust God though to have this all worked out in the end. In the mean-time, I think it’s best to err on the of perfect love that casts out all fear. Fear of not measuring up, not being enough, not doing enough, and not having all the answers. God is good.

  137. street says:

joycemb said,” So your question is how to discern what is to be carried over, and what is to be dismissed as historical comment? Not ‘dismissed’ but categorized is a better word. Are we really “handing over our minds”?

my mind needs to die. it’s full of dross. this is not for everyone but it is for me. i find when i surrender, God makes it plain to me. sometimes right away, mostly not so much, thinking i am getting an exercise. i guess it’s how much i am able to struggle or how far i have wondered/ wandered away. when my mind is surrendered i have all my checkered past of experiences to be brought before me for instruction and reproof by the Holy Spirit. God chooses what to bring up and current circumstances. He will not leave you alone in that loves you. let His Word and Spirit richly dwell in peace. i have read so much i do not understand. i think it will be revisited eventually because it is there. it not so difficult when you look to Him. waiting is the fun part, but so worth it, like Christmas.

  138. joycemb says:

Yes I think waiting in peace, is key. His peace, not mine.

  139. oneg2dblu says:

street… yes, we are to come to Him as children, with lots of room in our lives to be yet filled.
Open to His teaching, open to His correction, and without our life’s past holding us back.
If we cling to this life, we loose what letting go would bring in instead.
If we die to self, we are empty of self, and ready for another filling, another life.

  140. joycemb says:

Street said: “God chooses what to bring up and current circumstances.”

Thank you I needed this reminder. My flesh is weary but this gives me hope once again.

  141. street says:

dear gary i was thinking i need to die and this is true. it is most clear when my eyes are on the Lord. it is a result of coming to Him. remembering the publican coming to the Temple and Jesus said he went away justified or clean, unlike the pharisee. the key is to keep your eyes on Jesus and not give up as you would say.
Jesus warned us not to take offense of Him.
