Transformative Spirituality

14747670751_1870499f74_zWe count on doctors to give us the right diagnosis and prescriptions for our illnesses, and are grateful when they do. The wrong answers and medications could either make our problems worse or just mask the illness by relieving our symptoms.

Dr Mark Hyman is the Director the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. He and his team of doctors and researchers are working for the transformation of medical education and practice that they hope will change our understanding and treatment of disease. He believes medicine of the future will not be about directly treating illness. Instead, he says it will be about creating health.

While I don’t know how far his approach to “oil changes” etc. for good nutrition will go to transform health care, I’m intrigued with a parallel that focuses on good health as a way of treating another level of illness.

Seems to me that this is how revolutionary the Gospel of Christ sounded to a man who had spent the first part of his life believing that an understanding and compliance with the Law of Moses was the solution to our spiritual and social ills. Paul described a transformed approach to “old assumptions” and a new approach to spirituality when he wrote,

But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. (2Cor 3:16-18 NLT).

There have been moments when the veil have been removed but all too often I return to living under the law.

I guess it is true that ‘old habits’ are not easy to break but I have come to a stage in my life where I have found contentment in knowing God’s grace still applies not only to me but to a world that is crying out for it!

There is coming a day, when no heartache shall come
No more clouds in the sky,
No more tears to dim our eyes,
    All is peace for evermore,
    On that happy golden shore,
What a day, glorious day that will be

What a day that will be
When my Jesus I shall see,
When I look upon His face,
The one who saved me by His grace,
When He takes me by the hand,
And leads me through the promised land,
What a day, Glorious day, that will be

    They’ll be no sorrow there,
    No more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no more pain,
    No more parting over there,
    And forever I will be,
With the one who died for me,
What a day, Glorious day, that will be

Gary your post origins and outcomes 20 March 6.07 pm

You commented that I had taken a offense at an earlier post of yours.

Just to clarify I did not take offense but I do not agree with your opinion.

Religious leaders today have caused many to turn away from church. I was told by a Roman Catholic that I know that many of the younger generation have done so after the revelation of abuse among many priests.

Leaders play an important part in how many see God today and a younger generation with no knowledge of the Bible are easy prey for false teachers.

I know many who worship God and do not attend church and those who have told me they feel nearer to God at times in their life when they have not been to church I believe the Holy Spirit is working in them.

It is God who leads me/you/others as it is He who knows us personally.

We are all entitled to our opinion but I am still very aware that my opinion can be wrong.

I believe only God has the whole truth, the rest of us live with part truths until we reach our heavenly home.

It is God who opens our eyes to spiritual truths when I/you/others are ready to hear them.

I do not have the power to transfer my spiritual truths to another, it is God given, and therefore I should not put another person down for lack of it.

Interesting combination of how we treated illness and how we might change the approach and how it *seems* the arrival of Jesus changed the treatment of sin.

Certainly medical treatment has undergone enormous changes over its history and even greater advancements in my own lifetime, but it seems at an odd price.

I am old enough to remember when a doctor actually came to my house when called upon to do so.
Now even when too sick to be up and about you have to go to their waiting room filled with other sick or disabled people and wait your turn for 15 minutes or less of examination.

I remember if you went to a hospital it was considered “clinically” clean and you felt somehow safer.
Now more people die from “Mensa” bacterial infection than ever before, just from being in the hospital.

Most of us would wonder how you could put a price on good health or being cured, but it seems the medical profession found a way.

With the coming Of Jesus the way sin was treated also underwent a different approach of being treated. Instead of punishing the sinner because he/she could read what was right and wrong acceptable and not acceptable under God’s Law.

Jesus was punished in their place and the sinner no longer under the threat of punishment from God for sin and as an added bonus the sinner was inoculated with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Jesus’ Spirit) so as to change his/her heart away from violating the law voluntarily at all. And this inoculation also covers you in the event you are exposed to sin in your members ever again.

There is more to say on this subject as how changes in how we as the church present the Gospel and how we as the church operate in the modern world, but will take that up in my next posting as this one is getting long.

Good Morning Mart & Friends —

It seems to me, Mart, that the Apostle Paul had strong evidence in his own life of the transforming power of the Spirit of God. Luke was so convinced of Christ’s effect upon him that Paul’s Damascus Road story appears three times (chapters 9, 22 and 26 of Acts). It was the hallmark of Paul’s life from that moment on.

The symbolic cross with snake, and crown (the graphic above) is provocative — but difficult to understand. The artist, Gabriel Rollenhagen, was clearly an intense young Dutchman! In the engraving the symbol of evil is clinging tightly to the symbol of sanctity in the picture.

The question for me in being transformed is, “How closely can I, an earthly creature, embrace Jesus’ free, cleansing sacrifice?” Not by “paying” but by surrendering, it appears.

Paul teaches that the reading of the Law of Moses has not changed hardened hearts. Moses always put a veil over his shining face.

My body, soul and spirit must be deeply engaged by the very Presence of the risen Christ. Then, I may faithfully reflect His glory. Wholeness as a human being comes with such surrender — as full health comes with right nutrition, though food is part of creation.

Must think on this some more.

    Blessings,
    Maru

  5. poohpity says:

Paul seemed to realize that is was not by his works by obedience to the law which only showed him how sinful he really truly was. The spiritual transformation came when Jesus introduced Himself to Paul. It was then that Paul seemed to realize how truly sick he was and that in and of himself there was no healing. No matter how good he thought he was by his zealous obedience to the law it would never be enough to earn his way to God. He first had to admit to his true spiritual condition which was empty keeping the outside clean while inside was polluted and dirty when the Lord shined His light inside the inner man.

The Lord seemed to have to show him how blind he was to what God truly wanted before He could help him see another way, the way of transformation spiritually that could only be accomplished by God Himself. Nothing Paul could do but everything that Jesus did, does and will do.

Paul experienced that change by the Lord which seems to be the reason he wrote, “And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” He did not say that he was responsible for the change by anything he could do but it is the Lord who does that work. Anyone who has experienced that change in their life knows this to be truth.

Only by acknowledging one is sick do they go to the doctor. Only by acknowledging how broken and empty we are do we go to the Savior. We can not go to Him if we think we are good, obedient people because one is blind to their true spiritual condition and really find no need for anything beyond self but to those who know their need go to the only One who is able to repair brokenness and fill an empty soul.

  6. remarutho says:

Emptying of self-will and refilling with God’s will seems to be a key to the kingdom, Pooh. We don’t “go to the doctor” just once, but we allow the cross to expose all the sin-sickness of our lives as we hold more and more tightly to Jesus’ atoning sacrifice for us.

Perhaps the image of preventive health is a good one — as we get the junk out of our diet — and bring in wholesome food and drink — plus healthful habits such as exercise and relaxation — we take on a healthy character more and more.

So, time spent with Jesus — face to face — confession, repentance, remembering His holy life and ultimate sacrifice for us — all allow His transforming power to dwell in us. He is active as we surrender.

    Food for thought… :o)

I have loved this hymn for as long as I can remember for it is what matters regardless of my class, color or creed.

On a hill far away, stood an old rugged Cross
The emblem of suff’ring and shame
And I love that old Cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

Oh, that old rugged Cross so despised by the world
Has a wondrous attraction for me
For the dear Lamb of God, left His Glory above
    To pardon and sanctify me

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a Crown

To the old rugged Cross I will ever be true
Its shame and reproach gladly bear
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away
Where His glory forever I’ll share

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

An old friend of mine, Melvin Oaster, was one of those fellows who never ate anything considered unhealthy by the very judgmental group of nutritionist’s who weekly tell the rest of us what is good for us and what isn’t.

He died of cancer at the age of 51.

My father-in-law “Curley” was a borderline alcoholic who never missed a day without a considerable amount of booze in him as well as smoking heavily. After suffering a series of strokes at the age of 85 he starved himself to death on purpose so Crick would not be burdened with his care. It took about four months for him to die.

He accepted Christ about a month before his death.

You are going to die I am going to die, Adam took death into us all by what he ate and nothing has changed.

The rich have better health care than the poor, nothing new there either.

One thing rings loud and clear; people will get whatever it is they want and there is always someone to help them do it.

Prohibition failed just like trying to keep drugs away from drug users has.

No one wants to live in a world where the only food available to them is regulated by the government because the government tells them what is good for them and what is not.

The medical profession brags about extending life, but they cannot stop death.

From the beginning God told Adam you may eat this but not that or else you will die.

    Adam died.

God set up a standard of living and said if you obey my laws you will live out a healthy prosperous life, if you don’t you will be impoverished, sickly and die in your sin.

Jesus came to “Preach the Gospel to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted to preach deliverance to the captives, and the recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” Luke 4:18, 19 KJV

Jesus came so that when you die you might have eternal life.

Not to prevent death, not at this time, that won’t happen until much later, Revelation 20:14 KJV

Jesus came so we might live out what of life we have without the fear of dying nor defeated by what circumstances we are born into.

So that we are able to do what living under the law couldn’t do. That, being obedient to God because of God, not because of us.

We are still in this world and still expected to resist sin, but are given a very strong ally The Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah.

  9. poohpity says:

Those doctors Mart was speaking of seem to be only hoping for answers to physical well being and concentrating on what we can do preventative for health but like Steve said there are times when no matter the precautions one takes it still may not prevent failing health.

So to me that has a lot to do with things we do but not much on how the transformation that takes place in the life of a believer by God’s Holy Spirit. That is His long process within us.(Phil 1:6 NLT) We could go to the Cross everyday and experience the newness of His mercies every morning, a doctor could never give us or no matter how good we think we care for ourselves(gives the ability to boast), it is nothing compared to the work the Lord does within us.

  10. poohpity says:

If I could do anything to look more like Jesus I would do it in a flat minute but instead I can look more to Jesus and realize He just seems to enjoy doing in us what we are unable to do for ourselves.

  11. oneg2dblu says:

I never read or heard Jesus preaching to anyone that how one lives their life, does not really matter.
To my knowledge, He never healed a sick person or rescued anyone from certain death and then said to them, go and freely sin.

Or go and live a drunkards/sin-filled life without consequences.

He is the Great Physician who always wrote exactly the right prescription for whatever troubles, and He always practiced and preached the preventative medicine of living holy, through His Obedience.

His prescription and His cure are the same, “Follow Me!”

thinking about what poo wrote and thinking.

“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

yes poo it seems we are very interested in perishable health. there are health’s of mind heart and spirit. they come together in Jesus. paul talks about the outer man decaying, but the inner man being renewed daily. like taking up a cross.

jeff said,”There is coming a day, when no heartache shall come
No more clouds in the sky,
No more tears to dim our eyes,
    All is peace for evermore,
    On that happy golden shore,
What a day, glorious day that will be”

let me be so bold as to say that day is “today!” and tomorrow and forever in Christ Jesus!!!

malleable clay is so much easier to work with.
did not like sitting in the bucket.
God bless the works of the hands of His Son.

  13. oneg2dblu says:

Sorry only drunkards came thru on that posting.

I’m not piling on to just “that one” of the many sins we might have committed, sins which He never approved of, or ever justified or made allowances for.

His whole reason for going to the Cross was not to cover up our sin, or justify our continued wrong living, but to give up His Holy life for the evil found in mankind which by the law, should have brought upon all a death sentence.

He did not remove the law, for it still stands, and still convicts the world daily. Praise God!

He did not cover up the world’s sins either, but, He has provided a Way for only those who will continue in a faith relationship with Him, to be Forgiven and to some day be Saved.

A narrow way that we might find and see how pathetic our attempts at standing alone are, and how Holy His “Standing In” for us and with us, makes us truly His.

  14. oneg2dblu says:

Sorry, but I thought the creation of the church, which so many here do not seem to promote or approve of any more, was all part of God’s plan.
You know, the transformative-spirituality that happened in those believers obediently gathered together in the Upper Room at the appointed day of Pentecost.
The church was created by God, to turn people on, not off!
Today it seems we are way to busy condemning both the law and the church.
Yet, both of those things played a part of our coming to the Lord, haven’t they?
Or, have I been pushing my own agenda again?

Gary, who has said anything to even insinuated in any way with your post 2:23 quote “I never read or heard Jesus preaching to anyone that how one lives their life, does not really matter.” Who has ever said anything like that in anyway, shape or form? If you think anyone has said anything like that on here then I now understand how you get what you get or rather don’t get from the bible.

When I have a critical spirit I know I am not right with God.

I struggle to overcome it and He endures with me until I let go of it.

I have said before that I would rather be broken than bitter for I have seen too much of bitterness and know the consequences of it.

I often find that people are of a certain character and whether they are a believer or not their character shines through.

I find myself drawn to those who are less aggressive and want to distance myself from those who get angry and are at war with the world.

Thank you Lord for your patience with me and others and remind me that you are in control of the heavens and the earth regardless of how dark the world may seem.

gary said,”His whole reason for going to the Cross was not to cover up our sin, or justify our continued wrong living, but to give up His Holy life for the evil found in mankind which by the law, should have brought upon all a death sentence.”

it is my understanding that Jesus put an “end” to sin at the cross. i also understand that something else has to happen and must happen or the process, sin and death, would continue. i think mart is touching on it by mentioning the Holy Spirit or Spirit of Christ. when the Spirit is present, game changer, game over, life begins.

“…and the life which I now live in the flesh,” not the life which I long to live or even pray that I live, but the life I now live in my mortal flesh— the life which others can see, “I live by faith in the Son of God….” This faith was not Paul’s own faith in Jesus Christ, but the faith the Son God had given to him (see Ephesians 2:8). It is no longer a faith in faith, but a faith that transcends all imaginable limits— a faith that comes only from the Son of God.My Utmost for His Highest

  19. poohpity says:

Gary hopefully this week you will learn what effect the Cross has on sin.

  20. joycemb says:

Gary I am reminded of the Buddhist way of thought called Karma which means simply :the belief that all of your actions will have equal reprecussions, affecting you. I thought of it because you seem to have a negative bent on how you read scripture. I get it because I used to read the same way; it’s how I was taught to read it. However, that began to change slowly as I studied Bible in college for 4 years and was taught that I could interpret it by reading and thinking for myself. Freedom is what I learned and am still learning, the freedom that Christ died to give all of us who were once slaves and held captive because of the Law that as Paul said without which (Law) we would not be aware of sin. So the law was a gift and only burdensome to those who tried but could not keep it (the Law). Karma (reaping and sowing) in Buddhism does not acknowledge the need for a Saviour. I much prefer knowing and experiencing the marvelous love that God has bestowed on me known as grace through the cross!

This blog has taught me new ways to experience grace, peeling back the layers of hard heartedness, blindness and yes stubbornness also. More grace more freedom. It’s awesome and to me more and more like how God really must be.

Praying all of our eyes here will be opened to more freedom in Christ this Holy Week of remembrance.

  21. joycemb says:

Note: The freedom through Christ I’m talking about means I am free to joyfully do what is right, instead of worrying about what I was doing wrong. I learned through literally trial and error that I was not held responsible for many many of my sins but received grace instead. I could give many examples throughout my walk with Jesus. It took me a long time to accept it as normal and not be astounded every time I was given grace. It’s still amazing though!

  22. poohpity says:

    Yes it is Joyce!! Amen!!

  23. street says:

joycemb said,” I learned through literally trial and error that I was not held responsible for many many of my sins but received grace instead.”

this truth has been brought home recently to me too. been thinking about it too. it even came up in a conversation. the poor guy had no clue what i was talking about.

let me explain some thoughts on it. imagine taking a test. we think 85% and up is pretty good. doesn’t work so well in cooking health care auto repair or mixing chemicals or playing with atoms. failure on any level is failure. grace keeps us alive. i see in the news daily where some did not receive this grace.

we work in our trained profession knowing failure is possible. some believing it to be impossible to fail. yet God will withhold no good thing from His children. failure is a powerful tool in the Hand of God. the greatest truth of the Bible is the Love and Grace of God in Christ Jesus. sin failure and guilt come to their end at the cross.

hoping to learn to joyfully do whats right like Jesus did. learning to walk is not fun. can’t wait to be trained to fly!

  24. jeff1 says:

I seem to keep stumbling and then I feel like giving up for I think of what my mother said and I start believing that we where cursed.

My mother was abused as a child due to her illegitimacy as in those days it was severely frowned upon. She said that is why bad stuff happened us and while my father said I should not listen to my mother when the bad stuff happened to me I believed it was punishment handed down.

Sin, failure and guilt I am too familiar with all three.

How can one know in their heart yet reject in their mind when one so affects the other.

I am so tired and just want to sleep and not wake up again but I am not suicidal.

Just wanting peace of mind that will last rather than fleeting!

  25. SFDBWV says:

The Amish it seems have taken the concept of separating ourselves from this world not concerning themselves with the politics or issues of it and settling on just surviving until death takes them or they are taken up in the rapture, to heart.

While they appear to be stuck in a time capsule of structured obedient living, what do they do to promote the basis of their salvation, Jesus of Nazareth, outside of their own society?

They have attempted to become totally self-reliant. The truth though is that they still need things that are manufactured outside of their society.

What would draw someone into their society? It is one of self-denial, ideally, and one of hard work the sum of which its own reward.

In concept their style of living keeps them safe from the outside temptations of the world. It would appear they have placed their ability to resist sin on a stern structured society.

How do you think that has worked out for them?

Whereas I too would like a much simpler life God didn’t put me in one and left me to rely on Him much more for my safety, my provision and certainly for my resistance to sin.

My life has been a mixture of failures and successes whereas being obedient to God’s laws are concerned. If it were not for God’s love and especially for Jesus’ sacrifice I would have remained lost to sin long ago in my youth.

I remain indebted to Jesus for His sacrifice for me and I am not worthy nor will I ever be able to repay Him for what He has done for me. All I can really do is tell others of it. In word and in deed

We often hear that faith without works is dead, but if you reverse that works without faith is also dead.

The ideal situation is to combine the two and rest in His sphere of love provision and protection, trusting that you are.

It will forever always be about Him.

  27. foreverblessed says:

    It is forever about Him!

But, you know, it took me such a long time to learn that.
Being raised in a law abiding church. Living the Life to the full was done by keeping the 10, and asking the Holy Spirit for Help. But the initiative was to come out of me, so if I did nothing, nothing would happen.

Living out of Grace, through faith in Jesus Christ was sooooo vague to me.

It would seem I would drift away. Without the guidance of the Law, the 10, my life would seem lost.

So whereas I should feel lost without Christ, I had to learn that.

But, I also believe that when we genuinely want to obey God He is quite capable to teach us His real Life, the Life of Living in the faith of the Son of God.

God started to talk to me, 20 years ago. I had left my childhood church, all my sociale life gone. But I had God!
I started talking to Him: Lord, I misinterpreted the bible, have mecy on me.

And there the road started, walking with Jesus, looking to Him for guidance, waiting, a lot of waiting in faith. And in waiting on Him we are cleansed inside.
No looking at the 10 could cleanse us inside. ( not saying that we could break the 10, but we should use it correctly)

Living out of grace, means that as Steve said, forever everything that we are we owe to Him!
Like this morning, there was such a great inner peace! I had been restless the last couple of days. I could only pray, Lord have mecy!
And now, here it is, great peace. And all I can say is, thank You Lord, You had mercy on me.
All treasure comes from above, love, Joy, peace
    Gal 5:22

  28. foreverblessed says:

I pray for you too Vivian! May God Grant you inner peace, the peace from above. Rivers of living water flowing from His mercy seat!

  29. jeff1 says:

Thank you Steve and Forever, Steve, knowing you understand my feelings makes me feel less guilty for having them.

I am so blessed in many ways and know so many more people in more difficult circumstances and I long to let go of thinking that is wrong.

For some reason I find it easier to share such thinking with those I do not know personally, because whether they mean to or not telling me I should not feel that way does not help my feelings of guilt but adds to it.

I believe time heals if I allow it to and in God’s time we shall be whole again.

Steve you mentioned the Amish and they try to separate themselves from this world and I understand so well their desire.

I see myself as my own worst enemy for I am either too critical or too naive and mostly I am both.

My friend said I trusted human nature too much and have fallen foul for such naiveness.

The truth is I had parents who protected me from this world and all that goes on it for many years and the revelations now both frighten and shock me.

I like the Amish folk did not realize human nature was capable of such depravity but watching a detective programme the other night and he said that given the circumstances any of us is capable of murder.

I have never had murder in my heart but I have had hatred and I understand exactly what he means, it is a fine line and there but for the grace of God go I.

Even before the ministry of Jesus, God had told Hosea, “I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.”. Then Jesus continued that teaching(Matt 9:13 NLT) because He knew it was the heart of mankind that needed change and that heart change would effect one’s behavior(transformation)of not only behavior but our thinking(Romans 12:2 NLT). The only One who can change a heart is the Lord because He can fill it with compassion, love, mercy and that is done by His grace not by anything we can do.

If we think we become righteous by following the law and sacrificing modern conveniences we have misunderstood God’s intent all along.(Mark 2:17 NLT; Luke 5:32 NLT; 1 Tim 1:15 NLT) God wanted to have a relationship with us and our sin made us turn away from Him so He did what had to be done so that we would turn(repent) back to Him by showing us how much He loves us. God’s Will all along was Micah 6:8 NLT. Learning that transforms us spiritually by getting to the heart of the matter.

While many people concentrate on behaviors in the do’s or don’t do’s God seems more concerned with the heart and us to draw closer to Him. Who wants to draw closer to a controlling, over powering, punitive God?
We have enough of that just living in this world but God offers us a place of rest, renewal, grace finding that transforms us from the flesh into a spiritual existence.

  33. poohpity says:

Even after his transformation Paul still wrote 1 Tim 1:15 NLT knowing that he still would not meet the high standards imposed by the law and we see that in his letter to the Romans in chapter 7. We struggle against the flesh and sin daily for those of us who are honest with our self but ended with the realization that the solution or healing came from Jesus Christ. God knows our hearts and the things we think and still wants a relationship with us and if we even think for a moment there is still not sin in us we only fool ourselves and possibly others but not God (1 John 1:8 NLT)

  34. poohpity says:

    Jesus took God’s wrath that we deserved. Romans 5:7-9 NIV;
For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.…

Yes, Steve, now it is obvious that I had not heard the news. When the afternoon newspsper was delivered did I see the headlines.
It is 1,5 hour drive away from where I live.
Sunday night we passed the Brussel airport on our way home.
I am asking God, where and when can I pray more: Lord gave mercy over is.
Maybe I was praying that prayer when we passed Brussels.
“Lord, Let me be an instrument in Your Hands.”
In praying, in the ministery of reconciliation:
Lord have mercy on us all.

  37. street says:

the greatest truth of the Bible is the Love and Grace of God in Christ Jesus. sin failure and guilt come to their end at the cross. <—street said.

it's pretty bad when you have to comment on your own comment….lol.

thinking, yes, sin failure guilt are ended , but that is only half the story!!! Resurrection Sunday this week. the Resurrection and Ascension are the other half. i think i need to put the rest of the puzzle together.

  38. poohpity says:

When will sin, failure and guilt be ended? I hope you mean one day in heaven. Until then aren’t those our means to learn lessons. We learn from sin, God’s grace and with guilt comes conviction not shame based guilt but conscience being pricked type quilt to try something new and failure we also learn from because it causes us to look beyond ourselves. All of those can be good things if they cause us to look up to God for help but they can be bad if we allow them to beat us down with no hope of change or transformation.

  39. poohpity says:

Glad to see you back street.

  40. oneg2dblu says:

To me, there is only one equation that properly fits,
“O death where is thy sting?”
Is that talking about the natural death which all mankind will experience, as ashes to ashes and dust to dust, whether they believers or not?
    Because, all flesh will perish…
    So, natural death, is natural.
It is talking about the spiritual death which comes as a consequence of one’s disobedience and sin, but is then taken away by the Grace given to all who will Repent and Believe?

We all know that the cross was long ago, yet, we all know that sin still lives in the hearts of men.
    So sin was never resolved.
But its punishment of death was taken upon the Savior, and the Savior overcame it.
Sin that brings guilt and not death is also taken away by Grace given to those Who, Ask, Seek, Knock, to be forgiven.
If one could sin freely without guilt, then, the God’s Law would not convict, the Holy Spirit would not convict, and we would not see any value in rebuke, correction, righteous teaching, or any need to ask for any forgiveness.

So, sin and guilt still do their work, and God still does His cleansing part in every convicted heart.

That is all part of God’s Plan.

We don’t get to change that order of things, it is how God teaches, and it is how we learn.

  41. remarutho says:

    Good Evening All —

Gary, please recall that transformative spirituality causes the glorious image of Jesus Christ to appear in and through His disciples by the presence of the Holy Spirit. Truly, “wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

^Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”

**”Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.

“For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

“Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

***”Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

“For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin,

“He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

    Blessings,

  42. jeff1 says:

When I try to be like Christ I become exhausted but when I let God transform me by surrendering myself to Him then His spirit works in me.

I find the surrendering very difficult because I am used to taking control of my life.

I remember once when I was driving a car and I lost control of it on a very slippery road and it was very frightening because the car was in control and I could do nothing but wait until I came off the slippery road.

For some letting go seems to be more difficult but now I understand that when I look to God He strengthens me while I had believed that He would punish me for failing.

I was not trusting God because my beliefs where wrong.

I want to say that since coming on this site I am growing so much and I have said before that those who are Biblically taught must realize that many today are not, and it is very often wrong interpretation that makes people turn away from God.

I have not been seeing God as a God I can go to but a God I should run from because of my weaknesses but God wants to strengthen me but I keep fearing Him and running away instead.

Though my heart tells me one thing, my head keeps resisting because I have wandered from the path.

God help me and so many like me who struggle with getting right with God because of letting my head rule my heart.

Thank you Maru and Pooh your posts have been so very enlightening for me.

Not meaning to leave anyone out but it was these two posts that God’s spirit directed me to.

  43. oneg2dblu says:

Maru… thank you for sharing all those verses.
I read them with great enthusiasm, I see their wonder and their promise, their Absolute Authority over me, and the world to which they were written..
However, I do not receive them as any freedom from to give me license to continue to sin. None!
I can not sin freely and without conviction yet, so I guess I’m still a baby believer. Right?
However, like you, I do not feel the condemnation and death that sin brings to those, who are under the law, or those who are not saved, because I am saved from those things.
So, no condemnation and no death.
Am I to feel trapped because I still feel the need to practice what the law gives as guidelines for right living.
That will not be taken away from me, or wiped from God’s Word for it is God who placed them there fro a reason,
and to ignore them after receiving initial salvation, surely is not one of them.
I am not living without the Holy Spirit in my life, and that Spirit still brings conviction, and that conviction brings guilt, and that guilt brings me to my knees and asking for forgiveness.
Condemnation and death are not part of that conviction or guilt. Those things no longer have power over me, they belong to the world, and the world has no power over me, the Lord is my strength and He has, “All the Power to convict me, to forgive me, to change me, and to save me.
If that process ever stops within me, my faith would be without any proof, I would belong to the Devil who wants me to sin freely, and wants me to not feel any conviction.
So, the freedom I walk in is this, knowing that all my past confessed sins are forgiven me, but not forgotten by me, as they remain to show me where not to go again.

If that walk I have just described causes you to see me as not walking in the light, than that is what you have chosen to believe, not me.
    Have a blessed day,
    Gary

  44. oneg2dblu says:

Can we all agree on this, that there is a double-minded meaning attached to the word life, one part is of the flesh and the other is of the spirit, yes, contained in one earthly body and, Created in His Image!

But, where we are walking in the flesh there is only darkness and sin, and in the spirit, there is only light.

We are to be the Light, not looking or acting like the now Walking Dead that serve only their flesh, but, acting as His Bride, expectantly awaiting His return, with our lamps filled, and wearing our newly whitewashed clothes, keeping ourselves pure.
I can think of no bride worthy of being a bride that should act as if they do not care what they wear, or how they live, thinking to themselves I am free to live as I please, with no guilt or conviction.
Freely soiling herself daily, (you can add your own thoughts about how that looks) yet thinking to herself, his love for me has so blinded him that he will only see me as pure, regardless of all my ungodly thoughts and free living, for I’m going to be his forever.
    LOL!
That is not freedom, that is deception.

  45. oneg2dblu says:

Jeff1… Yes, we all grow more and more, just as much every time our faith is tested or challenged by some, or reinforced by God’s truth/word, or by the words of others who we choose to believe.

Whether preachers, teachers, song writers, poem makers, or the one currently sitting next to you, we all make our choices and we live by them.

To me, It is all part of God’s plan, “There are no accidental meetings.”

As the word points out, loving those who love you is no test of love, for even the world loves those who love them.
    Just thinking…

  46. street says:

gary ? when one is cleansed from sin? how is this accomplished?

  47. poohpity says:

Change does not come from following the law because no one has ever been able to follow the law without failing in some form or another. So Gary when you are able to follow the law without fail let us know, I would be so interested in hearing of that because I know that there was only One who was able.

When the law was given along with it were sacrifices practiced to cleanse temporarily for the sin which foretold of the final sacrifice that could only be found in the perfect lamb of God. His body and blood we remember every time we take communion to remember His final atoning sacrifice for the sins of the world. That was God’s plan from the beginning even before the law was given as shared in Genesis.

“So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come.[a] He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world. 12 With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.

13 Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. 14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds[b] so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. 15 That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.” Hebrews 9:11-15 NLT

So you are not arguing with Maru but saying the things she quoted in scripture are what you do not believe while saying that you believe scripture when actually it is only your perception of what they say that you believe in.

  48. poohpity says:

Notice the last sentence of Hebrews that says, “FOR CHRIST DIED TO SET THEM/US FREE FROM THE PENALTY OF THE SINS THEY/US HAVE COMMITTED UNDER THE FIRST COVENANT”. It does not say that “sin was ever resolved” it says that WE are set free from the PENALTY. Jesus took our punishment upon His back so that we could have a relationship with God so that we could concentrate on the Lord(God focused) and doing good things for people rather concentrating on our sinfulness(self focused).

  49. jeff1 says:

To me, it is about God’s truth, and this world needing God’s truth.

Yes, it is happening like God said it would but believers are divided on truth’s.

The only truth I have today is that Christ died for me a sinner and all the other beliefs I have are very much up in the air!

  50. poohpity says:

I know what I am about to say will be hard from some to understand but here goes. If you are traveling down a road that has no speed limit can you be charged with speeding?

Now here is the scripture that goes with that concept. Romans 4:14 NLT “For the law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it. (The only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to break!)” If we are living to obey the law then we are not living by faith that Jesus fulfilled the law.

  51. poohpity says:

Sorry that was Romans 4:15 NLT

  52. street says:

next question? what does it mean to fall from grace? paul spoke much of this question.

dear jeff you have a good foundation on which to grow and build. be careful to build with truth at all times and when in difficulty ask the builder of the house for help.
your house will weather the storm. He is Faithful.

  53. oneg2dblu says:

street… Wow, back again to the foundational concepts, the milk of the immature.

So to you street I will give some more play.

Let’s see, we had better take this very slowly…the punishment for sin was death. Right?

It was death for the sins of the world that were taken upon the sinless one. Right?

The one without blemish, became the sacrificial lamb.
    Right?

He was slain for the sins of all, to be cleansed of that which He himself, needed no cleansing.
    Right?

He alone has conquered even the punishment of death, through His resurrection.
    Right?

That sentence of death was falsely applied to him for sin.
    Right?

So, under the improperly applied law, which he did not break, he was condemned to the Cross.
    Right?

I tell you what freedom is, someone here has the freedom to ask the most elemental of curt suppositions to try to trip me up, or expose me if you will, but, in really it shows who they really are instead.

They continue to ask, and I now do as they often do, I laugh out loud.

I now have the freedom to ignore their perpetual fleshly prodding, and their absurd assumptions.

    LOL!

  54. oneg2dblu says:

Sorry, the “Let us Ask Gary Hour,” is over for now, and your time is up.
    Gary

  55. narrowpathseeker says:

Gary, have a good night and thanks for the smile.

  56. poohpity says:

Gary , talk about immaturity to ask others questions because of the inability to answer the one’s asked of you. That is called deflection. street’s questions are relevant not from immaturity but the person he asks them of does not seem quite sure of the foundation that the beliefs of any follower of Christ knows and would find much pleasure in answering. (1 Peter 3:15 NLT) The only good reason for not answering is because you do not know and that is even just a simple and honest answer “I just do not know”

  57. street says:

mart said,”We count on doctors to give us the right diagnosis and prescriptions for our illnesses, and are grateful when they do. The wrong answers and medications could either make our problems worse or just mask the illness by relieving our symptoms.”

    ama means against medical advise.

    “Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters;
And you who have no money come, buy and eat.
    Come, buy wine and milk
    Without money and without cost.

some refuse to even to come and some demand terms. the fall from grace is a long fall.

  58. oneg2dblu says:

narrowpathseeker… it is the gift that keeps on giving. :)

  59. street says:

gary asked,”…but, in really it shows who they really are instead.”

    who am i gary?

  60. oneg2dblu says:

Please refer to my 4:29 post.
    Good night!

  61. joycemb says:

Mart ends the topic with: But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. (2Cor 3:16-18 NLT

It states that those who have had that veil removed and see and reflect the glory of the Lord. That it is the Spirit that changes us into his image. If I take it at face value, as it says, the work of change is done by the spirit. period. No works. No “how to” rules to follow. And certainly no amount of effort on my part. Ah blessed rest in Christ alone! His work carries on still at His pace and His appointment. All our works are as filthy rags… I want to be like Christ; forgiving, kind, and holy. The judging part will come but not until He has gathered all His chicks to Him. His waiting is His patience. Oh to be like Him..willing to die to self. Which also means being patient with my brothers and sisters. I’m still learning and if you can be patient with me, maybe I can learn what patience looks like, maybe.

  62. street says:

so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  63. remarutho says:

    Good Evening All —

It seems to me that there comes a time when we can lay our doubts to rest — and be assured that Christ has undertaken to transform us into His likeness — perhaps not fully, but change has happened. We are not the same as we were!

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.”

Praying we will allow this to be — and rest in God’s goodness. He is sovereign over every doubt and fear.

Joy to all here as Resurrection Day approaches!

Please Lord, this Easter period and forevermore, help me let go of my doubts and fears, and my all too often, critical spirit, that offends you.

I make you promises that I do not keep but you know my weaknesses and your mercy is ever lasting.

If I have tears today it is because I know how much I have let you down not so much by my actions but by my omissions.

I have failed to love my enemies as you have told me too and in doing so have failed to recognize a brother or sister in Christ.

When I take communion this Easter period and say that ‘I am not worthy to gather up the crumbs under your table’ I know it is true, but thou art the same Lord, whose nature is always to have mercy.

Any peace I have today is from your Blessed Assurance that Jesus is mine.
