Spirituality

Medium - 1Spirituality may be more widely regarded than sectarianism, denominationalism, churchism, or organized religion of any kind.

Definitions and articles on the subject describe it as a sense of connection to something beyond our material selves from which we draw our source of meaning and purpose in this world.

For many of us who grew up in the church, spirituality was regarded as a dangerous, undefined subjectivism and door to spiritual forces waging a war against the one true God.

For others, spirituality became a bridge and signpost to sanity— as in AA. An inner spiritual willingness to find connection with anything beyond self-soothing madness was the first step of the way back.

With a suspicion that GK Chesterton was on to something when, in his classic “Orthodoxy”, he suggested that dislocated and unconnected virtue (i.e. commitment to the truth) may do more harm than vice, I wish we could consider together the nature of spirituality as it relates to our own knowledge, belief, and faith.

Let’s think of spirituality as a personal inner sense of connection to our own Source. Is it possible that one of the dangers of “organized religion” is that “goodness, love, kindness, faithfulness, patience, etc” become objectified, canonized, and eventually lost in our dissected commitment to “the word”, “the truth,” “the knowledge,” “the right doctrine, and “the faith” we are trying to defend?

In Jesus’s name, and for Jesus’s sake, is there a spirituality that refreshingly animates us when we are “true” to the Christ and Lord— of whom our Bibles speak?

Thank you very much for this question! It is good to think about.
When I left my youth church, which was way too much on the Laws of God and obeying them, and then asking ghd Holy Spirit to help you keeping the Laws. That was my christian life.
What was wrong with that? Well I guess I missed the spiritual connection to Jesus, the bread of life, the fountain of my being.
Never was I encouraged to live out of faith in Jesus Christ. It was ridiculed, like: that is the easy way out. Just look to Jesus and everything will be allright. No way!

Now I do believe that when I look up to Jesus in faith, His spiritual life will flow through me, and cleanse me and vigorizes me. Bit by bit. So everyday again I have to look up to Him.
That, in fact is a very spiritual message.
Is there a bible verse that will back it up?

Look to me and be saved Isa 45:22 (KJV)
( The bible verse through which Spurgeon was called)
The prophetic happening in the OT:
The Israelites in the wilderness had to look to the snake on the pole, all who looked were healed. A dramatic vision of the spiritual forces that start working when we look up in faith to the Cross. Numb 21:8-9

It is a Spiritual connection we have with Jesus,
the Bread of Life – we eat it spiritually
The Light of life – the Light that shines into our darkness, and makes us see, our spiritual eyes are opened.
Alfa and Omega – the God who was with our beginning, the God who is with our end, and with all steps in between, all the letters of the alphabet, see Psalm 119, which glorifies the life of faith we live in Christ.

What a great Spiritual life we live in faith in Christ

I read this new subject earlier this morning, but wanted to have a little time to give a reply, as my day gets busy I hope I have time to honor it.

My first thoughts are the difference in two words; “spirituality” and “spiritualism”.

As a child in Sunday school I was never given any warnings that things “spiritual” were anything but just that, things that are outside the physical realm.

Trying to explain the difference may be like understanding the difference between something two dimensional and something three.

God it is said in Scripture is a “Spirit” being. In trying to understand existence, the creation of our physical world came from an unseen spiritual one.

God, angels, heaven all exist in the spiritual realm, but connected to this physical one supernaturally.

Angel worship is warned of and even the angels are recorded in scripture as telling those they encountered not to. It is the fallen angels that seek worship especially their leader Satan.

I think my first inroad to our subject I will leave here as establishing (for me) that there is a spiritual reality to our faith in God and certainly to Jesus of Nazareth who said to Pilate His kingdom is not of this world.

Good Morning Mart and Friends —

Storms headed our way here in the valley — 6C/42F with “red in the morning” skies.

Have the sense in our culture and public discourse here and now, we are swimming in a tub of gelatin — spirituality can mean many foolish and dangerous things — or it can be Christ inside us.

Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler, twenty-odd years ago, put out a little guide entitled “Don’t Check Your Brains at the Door.” I believe this is still true.

“Think and let think” is a good credo — but when a fellow pilgrim asks about Jesus, it seems to me it is good to speak about Him as we know Him personally rather than to repeat second-hand rumors or doctrine.

The photo of the bend in the road is great, Mart. Plus, the fall colors are very nice! Reminds me we are all on a journey — all are pilgrims traveling toward our Source. Jesus is somebody who can take my hand and guide me out of danger when I stray into the brush.

At the well in Samaria He said:
“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

“The woman said to Him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am He.’” (John 4:24-26)

    As Jesus told her:
“Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.” (v. 21)

To me, what Jesus says means no temple is required to worship the Creator God. We don’t worship on Zion and we don’t worship on Gerizim. We worship God in our spirit and heart — and we use our brains as we do, it seems to me.

    Joy all day,
    Maru

  5. poohpity says:

I think the spirituality that Bill W and Dr Bob had in mind was a relationship with the Lord however because so many who were broken felt the rejection and moral superiority of the people who practiced organized religion maybe thought that the mention of Jesus would turn people away from truly finding Him. They seem to want to create a group of people who would accept each other’s brokenness by making a wide road to the narrow path however many got stuck on the wide road and did not ever find the narrow path because they put their faith in each other or a god of their understanding.

So to think of the emptiness of that kind of spirituality which many different disciplines like buddism, hindism, etc., gets people to get out of their selves but never seems to get them to God, so it does look leafless and fruitless because the focus is still on people, the inner self trying to connect to the outer world around them and their place in it. It seems to work for a while but an emptiness is still present.

That hole that never seems to get satisfied until the light fills the darkness, until the Spirit of the Living God takes up residence in the heart, mind and soul of a person. Many can say they are filled with that Spirit but often to say it does not really reflect whether it is there because when it is really there no one needs mention it, they just live it. The fruit is evident.

  6. street says:

it is no surprise that people are spiritual. we all have seen corpses. the interesting thing is that God calls people walking around and speaking, dead in their sin. they are under sentence of death and dead before God. some are alive to Him. i hope all here know and understand how this is true. commitment trust obedience to the truth, Jesus, is the way this life comes, how be it, to His own choosing. the hard part for the trusting is understanding the transfer of headship. where as before we were sinners doing what we wanted with no regard for good. now under new Shepard living with no regard for evil. i have to set free from the penalty of sin, but not free from it’s influence. leaning hard into Him. david learned to trust in Him and receive some very precious promises that are all fulfilled in Christ.
Jesus told people to come, go, wait, watch, listen, love, forgive, repent, practice communion, baptize, pray, ask….and many other things as john said all books could not contain. some heard and trusted. i fought spending time with Him like i fight going to sleep at night as a child and as an adult. let this world fade away and let Christ take His rightful place in me.

  10. jeff1 says:

When I was younger I went to fortune tellers and one of them did see my future. It bothers me to this day how this could be.

I know people often say they have seen a feather after their loved one died and believe it is from them.

There is a world that I have no knowledge of but I believe it exists but I was taught not to go there and I believe there is good reasons for that.

God protects me in ways I do not understand but I understand this that ONLY God should know the future.

The bible and the revelations in it are happening today and there are those chosen to understand it and I am not one of them.

We can see from what is happening in the world that the bible is not wrong but there are many wrong interpretations of it and the fact that the bible states that in the end times many would be fooled proves God gets it right.

God’s way is not man’s way but if I am seeking God then I will see His hand in this world but His kingdom is not of this world and the state of this world should tell me that.

Following Christ never was going to be easy, remember what happened to His disciples. Men have not changed, the generations have changed but history repeats itself and men would crucify Jesus today proving the bible to be right.

Agree with God and praise Him for His goodness and mercy and also that I am acceptable in His sight for I know how weak I am.

  11. SFDBWV says:

I am purposely trying not to get ahead of my thoughts on this subject as sometimes my mind races ahead of where I am and I think the subject is close to everyone.

It is written that God has written eternity on the hearts of man.

To me this simple one line verse of Scripture explains a great deal. First it is why everyone in all cultures all over the world “seek” God.

Though we all came from the same beginnings the true knowledge of God got lost in Lore and superstitions and myths.

Which is why, in my understanding, in part that God began His work in Abraham to Isaak to Jacob to Moses and to the Scripture we know of as the Bible with the culmination being the coming of Jesus of Nazareth into the world. Jesus giving the true testimony of who God is and what He wants of us.

Jesus says that there is “No” other way to God except through Him. That any other way is as a thief.

When we think of an omnipotent, omnipresent God we can’t think of anything other than a God who is everywhere His creation is and everywhere means to me everywhere.

So believing that says that God sees and hears the person totally lost from Him and void of Jesus as well as those who proclaim Jesus as Lord.

The person who proclaims Jesus is Lord has found the way to God through Jesus of Nazareth and whose sin is then covered, the person who has yet to accept Christ is as the one lost sheep Jesus spoke of and so sought for by God.

God calls to every heart. My understanding of one concept of “spirituality” is how God stirs the inner being of a person. How one is touched by God and moved toward Him.

So wonderful is this touch and unction of God that one can get lost in its experience if it were not for His Spirit guiding us toward His goal of our salvation.

It is Jesus who seeks out the lost for His Father and Jesus who paid the price for the sinner. It is His Father who judges all men accordingly.

I want to speak further about how we see God in the sunrise or in the nature around us, or experienced in “spiritual” ways, but for now I leave my comment as enough for me for now.

  12. joycemb says:

I think Viv that with the advent of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit the disciples received what they needed to follow Christ. They even died for their faith and love of Him. We too have that power to even die for our Saviour, whether dying to self or physical death which is occurring in other parts of the world right now in great numbers. Just like in the 1st century Gods spirit is moving all over the world still today! What s joy to be a part of that same movement! Now that’s spirituality worth investing in :-)

  13. SFDBWV says:

Most all of us are familiar with the story of Elijah and His “encounter” with God in the cave.

It was in the “still small voice in his heart” that God spoke to him.

Mart said that spirituality may be more widely regarded than sectarianism, denominationalism, churchism, or organized religion of any kind.

Many people are disappointed or disillusioned with the above mentioned “isms”. Mostly as a result of how they were either treated or what they expected from their involvement in them.

Instead of listening to that voice in their heart, they listened to what they were told to listen to. Often threatened with eternal damnation if they did not.

Such people never get to experience the fullness of a relationship with Jesus, our Lord and our God.

As a result they drop out of “organized” worship of any kind or a structured belief of any tenet and settle with their own “spirituality” and relationship with God.

It may be a crossroad or intersection in ones journey with God. Or where the danger of the slippery slope toward “spiritual[ism]” may be followed.

  14. poohpity says:

Jesus addressed “Organized Religion” and those who practice it as white washed tombs, full of dead bones, looking good on the outside while the inside was full of stink and decay. Putting heavy demands and burdens on people while neglecting the more important issues of helping people through the troubles of life but as long as they look good and people gave them praise they were well.(Matt 23) They did not have that connection with God.

The Spirit was given to those who believe, trust and depend on God not their abilities to be everything to everyone because they have already made their selves god so not needing anything greater than themselves to function.

There are plenty of those religious folks still today they call themselves Christians but there is nothing they do that even represents someone who follows Christ. Those that follow Christ say look to Him, follow, search and seek because Jesus is the only One who can satisfy the deepest corners of our very souls.

  15. street says:

mart said,” I wish we could consider together the nature of spirituality as it relates to our own knowledge, belief, and faith.”

with all the different voices and spirits out there, there is a question we need to ask ourselves that may reveal what we are looking at or going by. the question that comes to mind is, “what is the most important thing to you?” for extra credit, “how does it look next to the plumb line?” question without reference can be misleading too. the devil is good at bring up doubt and questions. may you be comforted encourage and strengthened by the truth.

  16. street says:

  17. SFDBWV says:

In the early morning hours when I go out back is when I usually have my “alone time” with God. I can and do also have many prayers in each room of the house including the basement off and on throughout the day, but that outside or in the garage is where I can feel I can give God my undivided time.

Often and over time God reminds me that where and when does not matter, as long as I come to Him in thanksgiving, praise and prayer.

Before Matthew’s accident I would often take a long walk to the top of the mountain behind my house just for prayer. I can no longer do that so my garage and the back yard has to do for now.

When Matt was about 14 I took him to my favorite high place at 4200 feet it is the highest elevation near to us and at its very tip top is a huge rock formation with a US Geodetic survey marker. Together we stood there atop our world and gave thanks to God for being there together. To experience something together that is *supernatural* in its feel.

At 69 years old I still am thrilled to see rainbows, and took a picture just this past summer of a “glory” which is a rainbow that circles the sun in the sky above.

Last evening on TV there were 4 people on the Weather Channel being filmed as they awaited the lift off of a new weather satellite. After the rocket successfully was launched the young lady with Al Roker said there was a *feel* there. I smiled as I know that “feel” to come from the connection to the thousands of others there to watch the event.

This is a peek into “spirituality”. Something experienced beyond our normal senses.

You feel it and you are aware of it. Often it comes across as something you know, because you know, even if you don’t know why you know.

This morning I spent time shoveling and plowing, measuring the snow and feeding the critters all with God as a companion in conversation and in “feel”.

If you don’t or won’t experience “spirituality” in connection with your Christian faith you are missing a very personal relationship with our Lord.

  18. remarutho says:

    Good Morning All —

So happy you mentioned rainbows, Steve. No matter what marketers, manufacturers or political interests try to do with the beautiful “bridge in the sky,” it always brings forth the wonder and gratitude you describe when it is experienced in the flesh — for those whose physical vision is intact.

Yesterday, I was around town doing errands. Rain showers came and went, and the clouds parted often to allow rainbows to form here and there — right up until sunset. That play of light and water always opens the window or door to the heavens, it seems to me.

A rainbow is a gift for a moment. I always feel privileged to see one — and to pause and give our Creator God praise and thanks. I pray for all who are witnessing His glory – that each one will be in intimate touch with the Almighty. And I pray many will draw near to the Lord in the kairos moment.

Such a glorious gift sustains me in the midst of even the most difficult struggles in my life. Actually have several vivid memories of specific moments in which a rainbow gave me hope when things were utterly dark for me.

Even a person distant from God’s love will feel the stirring of their spirit:

“Because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the Sunrise from on high will visit us, to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:78-79)

As many here have said already, the spirit of a person resonates with the Holy Spirit at certain unmistakable moments.

This is part of spirituality — the way we are created in God’s image.

    Joy all day,
    Maru

  19. joycemb says:

    Beautiful picture Steve.

The LORD Is spirit so we must worship in spirit and truth the Bible says. Every good thought, word, or deed done in Jesus’ name becomes spiritual. Riches that are stored up in heaven are what we are here for, doing our part to build up the kingdom. He gives, we return it to Him. Because it’s all about Him, no matter how individual we try to make it. We are to multiply the blessings for the others’ good and our own well being. “Do unto others” etc.

After the long conversation on the Perspective post yesterday I felt so sad. Flesh against flesh never turns out good. Even spirit against flesh is fruitless and a battle I need to stay away from. It always turns out badly. When someone resorts to the sexism argument you know things have gone horribly wrong. Yet if we battle in the flesh where else can it go but downhill. I’m still sad about it.

Please say a prayer for me friends I’m a little worn this morning.
    Thanks, Joyce

Experiencing a connection with God when His Spirit connects with mine to let me know I am His and He is mine. Paying attention when His Spirit leads me to truth filled with Grace. Knowing that it is His Spirit that touches my conscience to guide and direct me and let me know when I am going down a right or wrong road. It is His Spirit as I read His word that makes the words pop out at me knowing that He is speaking to me.

I do not know if I could explain that as spirituality or as a relationship. It is more than a feeling to me it is knowing and experiencing because often I can not trust my feelings or my knowledge but it is a knowing that His presence is all around even though I may not see or feel it but He is here always in all ways.

i don’t know if i can buy into this statement. let me explain. God always acts in accordance with His Holiness and Righteousness, His Character. john describes Him as light with no darkness in Him at all. at church today i chatted with a member and we were talking and he could not believe God raised up assyria and babylon to punish His people. i took it that he has never read the Old Testament. our knowledge is totally dependent on knowing God’s Word, just like adam, and applying it correctly. living outside of the Word, comes to nothing and even judgment. thinking God’s Word is the plumb line and we need to get it out daily because what we see is not a good line without the Word. i have to admit this looks like does and don’t and we are back to square one, again, but i never mention Holy Spirit or faith.

  28. jeff1 says:

Nothing Can Separate Us From God’s Love

What shall we say about such wonderful things as these?
If God is for us, who can be against us? Since He did not spare even His own Son but gave Him up for us all, won’t He also give us everything else? Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for His own? No one-for God Himself has given us right standing with Himself.
Who then will condemn us? No one-for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and He is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.

Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean He no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

And am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow-not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below-indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

i post these backwards from what was posted by mart to look at them from a different perspective. i can understand why aa has to look beyond self, they understand they are dead in their tracks to “self-soothing madness.” they have come to the truth and have begun a journey in truth, they can not afford to check their brain at the door anymore. to begin to rebuild self soothing madness is to practice idolatry. paul talked about rebuilding the law. there are several man made religions that will do this for you, then again madness. in the kingdom you can build with wood hay and stubble. and then we come to Jesus and He said,
“upon this rock “I” will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.”

This is an example of human behavior at its worst.

Christian’s are supposed to be “above” such behavior, but are we?

In the string of “isms” at the top of Mart’s subject, all fall under that same “human behavior” as the Liberal losers in the past election, when they label everyone that disagrees with their views negatively.

Most always without even knowing what the other view even represents.

Such behavior could be said to be elitist snobbery as well, but is it Christ like?

“Spirituality” and spiritualism is viewed as being different by me. Spiritualism can be seen as almost a religion of itself. One that views God in a very different way than represented in the Bible and certainly not embodied by Jesus of Nazareth, but as a “force” or cosmic power that copies our view of God without acknowledging Jesus as Lord and or man being in the image of God, physically.

A power we can tap into by our actions and being open to it.

Here is the danger and trap, being open to it.

Here is also the dilemma Mart is asking us to explore.

Can I truthfully say that all my behaviour is Christ like and this is where the difficulty lies for me and why I see myself as ‘a sinner saved by grace’ rather then a ‘saint saved by grace’.

I have to be one or the other ‘there is no grey area’ in God’s view.

I am equally in need of God’s grace as the next person so why would I feel I have the right to give spiritual guidance to another when I am in need of it myself!

I can share in another’s struggle but I cannot take that struggle from them or vice versa, it is God who is faithful and whose Grace will see me/us home.

Thanks be to God for His goodness and mercy.

    Spirituality
thinking about the Word and the Holy Spirit. how you can “live” in the word without the Holy Spirit, or you can “live” in the spirit without the Word. the pharisees just could not marry the two together. neither can we, unless we take up the cross.

looked up the word grieve online and there was a meaning Archaic. to oppress or wrong. guess this is similar to having our way and not the way of Him we claim to serve. seeing how the Holy Spirit only convicts of sin and testifies to Jesus, He gives us a wide latitude of freedom. His respect of person is a greater respect than we have for Him. may we find unity that Glorifies God in Christ Jesus. to know Christ and Him crucified.

thinking about mart’s thoughts about how we read our Bibles and the Bible reads us. could the same be true of how we hear and read others, are we reading ourselves?

3 Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other.

  39. poohpity says:

Viv, that is exactly what Paul describes as a spiritual person one who recognizes their own propensity to sin and we share each others burdens. That is it. That is why they are gentle and kind to someone else when they see them being lead away by sin from God.

  40. street says:

as for reading ourselves, i think of stephen, he read the crowd correctly and at the same time was not reading himself, but the One he served. he loved them to the end and his testimony bore that out.

This is a beautiful song and reminds us that He never leaves us.

Everybody needs a little help sometime
    No one stands alone
Makes no difference if you’re just a child like me
Or a king upon a throne
    For there are no exceptions
We all stand in the line
    Everybody needs a friend
Let me tell me of mine

    He’s my forever friend
    My leave-me-never friend
From darkest night to rainbow’s end
    He’s my forever friend

Even when I turn away He cares for me
His love no one can shake
Even as I walk away He’s by my side
    With every breath I take
    And sometimes I forget Him
    My halo fails to shine
    Sometimes I’m not His friend
    But He is always mine

If you still don’t know the one I’m talking of
I think its time you knew
Long ago and far away upon a cross
    My friend died for you
So if you’d like to meet Him
And don’t know what to do
Ask my friend into your heart
And He’ll be your friend too

“Resources For Your Spiritual Growth”, This is the caption on the “Our Daily Bread” home page.

I know people who would be “labeled” as “New Ager’s”. I am not sure who among the media world gave them this name or why, but my guess as to why might be because they have rejected the world view of religion and have settled on something more “spiritual”.

It really isn’t new, just new to the current generation to whom everything is new and no one knew anything except what they have just discovered.

The Native American culture is all about “spirituality”. As well as being near to “Pan” worship or the worship of nature and ancestor worship. It is a combination actually of the three and “regarded” by most as being something beautiful.

The “spiritually” aware among us believe that there is a cosmic energy that influences us and in fact predestines our lives. That there is “power” in crystals and pyramids, that there is a spiritual meaning when we see eagles or beetles and yes some believe that our futures already written can be seen in the stars.

They believe that how you live and treat others will be how others treat you, generally.

They believe in life after death and believe that sometimes we can see and talk to the dead.

They are most often very polite, kind in nature and “non- condemning”. The major fault they see in world religions being “condemnation”.

Nearly everything that “spiritualists” believe in is already recorded in Scripture.

Missing from spiritualists is the “naming” of the cosmic energy they accept and for some believing that Jesus was this “energy” in the flesh and that His death realigns their place in the “cosmic” plan.

It can all get very confusing when we try and intellectualize everything instead of just live at peace with the Holy Spirit’s comforting and reassurance.

Our spiritual growth is in knowing who God is and being fed by Him and at peace as a result of it.

Steve, I am in CT for Thanksgiving and I am right dab in the middle of many anti Trumpers made up of friends and family. The Lord is working wonderfully in me. I somehow am not bothered by being outnumbered and I have the courage to respond with truth with as much kindness as possible..I am not afraid that they will all hate me..I am more into what will be will be. That is NOT me so I have to believe that the Lord has enabled this “spiritually”. AND your last sentence before the weather summed up what I am experiencing this week, “Our spiritual growth is in knowing who God is and being fed by Him and at peace as a result of it.” I am at peace with this matter. Thanks Steve

  46. poohpity says:

Some tribes of Native Americans had respect for the Creator and His creation; land, animals, trees and each other. Respecting their ancestors as wise because they had lived longer and knew that wisdom can come from vast experiences. Last week I listen to the real story of “Pocahontas” on CBN it was amazing. The rough part of all of it was the religious people who rather than listening thought they needed to impose the way they believed on them which also meant the traditions of the countries they left. If they would have listened intentionally would have seen the spiritual connection in their beliefs but they wanted control instead.

Everyone came from the original parents but it seems when they were separated, each to their own language, divisions ensued but all had part of the Genesis of mankind in common. We all speak differently, look differently, have different customs and traditions but really all have the same connection to the One who created us. Rather than being exclusive if we really listen we can hear the inclusiveness of our spirituality because we all have a spirit or soul within us that God has placed there when He breathed the spirit of life into Adam. Genesis 2:7

  48. jeff1 says:

Steve, from what you have said about the ‘spiritually’ aware I would say they have got it right about religions as non believers are confused about who God is because of religions.

Religions have not focused on ‘Christ’ but on their own doctrine and teaching and divided the word of God resulting in the creation of ‘New Agers’.

It is man’s failing that creates the vacuum and it is interesting that what the spiritualists believe is already recorded in the bible.

A coming together of beliefs that point to the one ‘God’ whether we all realize it or not could be part of God’s plan!

  49. street says:

mart wondering if the do’s and don’t are for comparison of good and evil not a substitute for faith. i think this is why we see many strange things because we live in the land of do’s and don’t s.

  50. SFDBWV says:

I spoke earlier about a “glory”, it being that weather phenomena that has a rainbow in a circle around the sun in the sky.

In the earliest paintings of the Saints all have a “glory” or halo about their head or illuminating around them.

Those among us who are sensitive to things “spiritual” recognize the “aura” or “persona” that accompanies each person.

It can be light or it can be dark, but most can “sense” it.

Mart asks “is there a spirituality that refreshingly animates us when we are true to the Christ and Lord of whom our Bible speaks?”

If we have Jesus’ Spirit in us He will be seen in that “glory” that surrounds us, He will be sensed by those we come into contact with. In fact that aura that accompanies us actually attracts people toward us.

When we allow ourselves to be in concert with our spirituality, we can see/sense God in the sunrise and hear the music that accompanies it. We can appreciate the gentle breeze in the trees as the rustle of its leaves seem almost to speak to us. We are never alone.

As Viv and I have testified we can sense God near when we are “touched” by music.

These things are spiritual and for we Christians it should always open the window on a world with God in view.

Remembering that we cannot out give God, along the way He shares with us a glimpse of the Spirit world that surrounds us.

It can be exciting and enjoyable. Don’t let someone steal your joy by their lack faith and lack of spiritual vision.

  51. poohpity says:

Is one attracted to the things of God? Like a growing knowledge or desire to learn about God, from God. Is God who one seeks and searches for? Is God foremost in one’s thinking or is one consumed with things of the world or satisfying the flesh.

No one was attracted to Jesus by an aura that surrounded him in fact “He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. 3He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.…”. Even those who said they worshiped God did not recognize Him as He stood in their midst.

Even John the Baptist people were not attacked to him by the way he looked but by what he taught. Jesus spoke and taught as one with the authority from God and by the miracles He did that is what attracted people to Him. Paul did not want for people to see him because of his weakened state but what he spoke was in the Spirit’s power. (2 Cor 2:2-6 NLT)

Witchcraft or spiritualism which can disguise itself and deceive people into thinking it is a connection with God when actually it is of the powers of darkness. The things of this world and of flesh attract those who are of the world and of the flesh actually that is more attractive then things of the Spirit. The things of the Spirit people tend to shun and hate.

  52. poohpity says:

Oops that was 1 Cor 2:2-6 NLT

  53. poohpity says:

I think often what happens is people look to movies, music or art created by people to get a picture of God rather than going to God Himself to learn about Him and it can be deceiving and give us a false image of what God and spiritual matters are like. Most of the movies even those who are trying to tell His story fall so short of the truth because they add to or take away from what we are actually given so human understanding and production value distort and if that is all we base our faith on, it will one day fade away.

  54. poohpity says:

People get discouraged and loose hope cause it seems that most have a produced good ending when the life in Christ may not have such good journeys as one could imagine. There is persecution, horrible deaths, hatred because the follower of Christ is living against this world and the things of it. It is a battle. Yes there is a good ending for those who believe but life in the here and now is not always coated in candy and lollipops and airy fairy mysticism. It is more like going upstream in a down stream sort of world like the Salmon fighting as they go home to produce the next generation.

  55. poohpity says:

But during that journey the people who rest in the Spirit of God find contentment, peace and rest knowing that God has everything in His awesome, powerful, mighty, grace-filled merciful hands and when we can not see His hands we trust in His faithful heart.

“If we have Jesus’ Spirit in us He will be seen in that “glory” that surrounds us, He will be sensed by those we come into contact with. In fact that aura that accompanies us actually attracts people toward us.”

My maternal grandmother was one with that aura. She was a gentle, loving, kind Christian woman who exuded the love of her Saviour wherever she went. She drew people to her simply by her gentle, humble, loving demeanor. She was wise enough then when opportunity knocked to speak of her Saviour and how she loved Him so. She passed away, lying in a hospital bed with the nurses crying. She was much loved by family and strangers alike and all she did was love her Lord deeply and grow in His Spirit every day she walked this earth. That is the aura I believe you are speaking of. Not the dark side connection into witchcraft.

My Gramma’s favourite gospel song is one of mine.

No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus

I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus,
    Since I found in Him a friend so strong and true;
I would tell you how He changed my life completely,
He did something that no other friend could do.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
    There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.

All my life was full of sin when Jesus found me,
    All my heart was full of misery and woe;
Jesus placed His strong and loving arms about me,
And He led me in the way I ought to go.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
    There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.

Ev’ry day He comes to me with new assurance,
    More and more I understand His words of love;
But I’ll never know just why He came to save me,
Till some day I see His blessed face above.

No one ever cared for me like Jesus,
    There’s no other friend so kind as He;
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me,
O how much He cared for me.

Thinking Pooh, that Steve is thinking of the ‘RISEN JESUS’ that we are spiritually connected to and why I feel close to Him when I am behaving in a Godly way or disconnected to Him when I am not!

It is God that draws me to Himself, because I was hating my enemies when He drew me to Himself and that was the work of the indwelling spirit as my heart was dark at the time!

Jesus died for sinners and how He draws them to Himself is the miraculous work of God and a mystery to many but as a wanderer from God’s ways I am aware it is His mercy and love that overcomes my doubt and fears.

Thank you Steve for reminding me not to let another steal my joy as I have a tendency to do so!

  59. SFDBWV says:

Pat I remember from my high school biology that we are more like our grandparents than our parents genetically. I don’t know for sure if that is true or not, but in your case I can testify that you have a great deal of your Grandmother in you.

Viv you are very welcome, as like you I have had people rob me of my joy all too many times, so I just don’t let them into my head. If they can’t be happy they want you to be unhappy with them as in “misery loves company”.

Be blesses both of you my dear friends.

    Steve

  60. poohpity says:

Viv, don’t you want to KNOW(not feel) that God being close to us has nothing to do with us but because of who God is?

Do people not agreeing with me rob me of joy? Then I am living to please people and my joy is based on them and not on God. I will boast in how I am which brings glory to myself and not in who God is(humility) and what He does in my life that is bringing Glory to God. Gal 1:10 NLT

  61. narrowpathseeker says:

Dear Pooh.. When will you ever realize that you are as transparent as clean glass? I believe that just about everybody here prays for you as we are called to do, but change doesn’t come…might it be because you are your very own stumbling block that hinders the Work in progress? I am not going to do any tit for tat with you as I know you love any attention you can get, but I AM going to gnaw at your life line to the pits below now and then when you’re harassing others. One day you may even wake up and be grateful for all the noise that woke you.

  62. jeff1 says:

Should I apologise for feeling connected to God?
I never felt connected to Him when I was listening to others telling me the Do’s and Don’ts so knowledge unless God given is futile in my life.

I did live to please others in my youth even though my Godly earthly father warned me against it so I learned the hard way because I did not listen to the wisdom of one much closer to God than ever I was.

It is not people disagreeing with me rob me of joy but it is the manner in which they disagree. My father disagreed with me yet he was humble, non judgemental and encouraging in his rebuke of me.

My father was a man of words because he could say the right words where I often find silence is better.

The tongue is still deadly than the sword and I often find it is best to hold mine.

I disagree that God being close to us has nothing to do with us; when my spirit is gentle Christ will draw close to me, but often I allow the cares of this world to draw me away, then I distant myself, and so it is a struggle.

You cannot bring Glory to God without a relationship with Jesus and it is by allowing Jesus to change you from the inside out that will Glorify God.

It is you being right with God is what God requires and not you pointing out others weaknesses as God knows all our weaknesses and loves us anyway.

  63. poohpity says:

Oh my gosh narrow I was not putting anyone down in anyway. I was simply saying as a recovering people pleaser we can not please anyone there will always be those that find fault with everything about us. So it is better to KNOW that God is well pleased with us because of our belief in His Son. If that is causing someone grief rather than finding encouragement then they have totally missed the spiritual aspect of what I was trying to get across.

Why don’t you just take your hostility towards me and give it to the Lord rather than cursing me with it and anyone else that reads your hate filled comments.

  64. poohpity says:

Viv, you can distant yourself from God but does that mean that He distances Himself from us? I do not think so because after all God has pursued us even before we knew Him or His Son while we were in the worst times of our lives and our worst in behaviors. I am not asking you to agree with me but with what God has done while we were still His enemies, so agree with Him about what you mean to Him.

  65. jeff1 says:

I am not in the habit of agreeing with anyone for the sake of it; I believe God momentarily distances Himself from me when I am not behaving reverently and rightfully so.

The bad behaviour is mine and I should take responsibility for it rather than claiming God is with me in my waywardness.

God will not be mocked, and if my behaviour has hurt others then I need to put it right or answer to God for failing to do so.

I have a relationship with God, but it needs improvement, and there is only one in the relationship who needs to improve, and that is me, because God is perfect and I am a work in process.

My aim should be to please God and not look for weaknesses in others because words are like weapons they wound sometimes.

I must remember how easy it is to deceive myself when my guard is down but God will not be deceived and will not allow me to deceive either.

That is why I can trust Him, because He is all knowing, and knows my ways are not always pure in heart, and I understand He has to change me to be acceptable in His sight.

I know I am special to God and that is why He draws me to Him and wants me to change for my own good and to His Glory.

I have my weaknesses but knowing God cares is what keeps me striving to be what God wants me to be and in the process help a few people along the way.

  66. phpatato says:

    Viv

You are so very humble! You are a blessing to me with your frank, honest and forthright assessment of yourself. What you say shines a light into the dark corners of my life. You are not alone in what you said. If you looked sideways, you will see me. I especially liked what you said about taking responsibility about bad behaviour. When bad behaviour hurts someone, owning up to it and saying sorry is the morally right thing to do. Stand up and man up as they say.

May God richly bless you! Thanks for posting!

  67. jeff1 says:

I am thankful that you find my post enlightening phpatato and it has been a slow process admitting to myself my weaknesses because I had thought I was doing all right keeping the rules until I realized that it did not stop me having feelings and thoughts that where not Christlike.

God has a way of correcting and I have to admit it has been a struggle and there are times when I believe I am doing better than others.

The past comes back to haunt me when I often wish that I could forget the bad stuff and remember the good but life is not like that and the reality is that I am always seeking God to strengthen me.

I used to fear that God would give up on me but being on here has helped me erase that fear that God will never give up on me and I have more peace now than I used to.

Thank you for your post and God bless you too.
