Not Quite Right

ArtPrize Exhibit

Those of us who have struggled with mental illness, either in ourselves or in someone we love, have learned what it means to be not quite right.

And when we read the story of the Bible we discover that what we think of as troubled thinking— is a hint of something common to all of us. How else could defenders of Moses unwittingly demand the death of their God? How else could defenders of what is right— be so wrong?

From life and Scripture we learn why we see things not only as they are, but as we are. Together we learn from illusionists, con artists, political strategists, and wise counselors—that we see what we expect (and sometimes want) to see.

Maybe that’s why the Apostle Paul reminds us of our capacity to create an alternative reality that lives in our own minds as we measure ourselves by ourselves… and compare ourselves among ourselves.

I recall a wise counselor teaching me that when someone we love is struggling with mental illness, we may need to learn to help them in ways that will not seem to us— or to our loved one—  quite right.

Yet as Jesus showed Temple Moneychangers— and those who demanded and carried out his crucifixion— it is the Spirit of God who enables us to do what is necessary for a  “now and not yet” right-in- God’s eyes,” harvest of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

Once again, could this be why our Savior offered us his Spirit, and not just his words?

  1. SFDBWV says:

The Greeks had a symbol for eternity, a figure 8 laid on its side, as you course the outline of it, and it goes on and on and on forever.

In the work of trying to legally define mental illness the law describes it as a person who cannot tell right from wrong.

In the course of life I think most of us can ask who among us is not a little off center and for that matter who decides where center is.

If I may say I have heard people described as being “not quite right” both jokingly and seriously as a way of summing up someone’s behavior.

In looking at and finding my way through Mart’s new subject I can’t help but ask aren’t all of the things that make us different also applied as to how we apply what we take as the Holy Spirit’s interaction with ours?

If you look at a person given a choice of heaven or hell only a person “not quite right” would choose hell, yet look at the choices people have made since Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit.

It would seem we all aren’t quite right. Given that we all make bad choices from time to time.

However right still remains right and wrong remains wrong in behavior and deed.

Why, you might ask, once we receive the Holy Spirit do we still make bad choices?

Is it because we ignore both the written Word and the urgings of the Holy Spirit? Or because we all suffer from mental illness and are seen by God as “not quite right”?

Is there a flaw in His creation?

Or is it so that He can show us His divine love of sacrifice and grace.

What then of people who can’t or won’t recognize it? Is it because they are mentally incompetent to the point of not knowing right from wrong or are we at fault because we can see the difference?

And so the song goes on and on without end.

Very thought provoking post along a line I’ve not thought of. Thanks, Mart. It probably is related to what the Lord has been surely trying to get through to me, and impressed on me maybe a couple years now, back: Proverbs 3:5-6. How I’m to trust in the Lord and not in my own understanding, which may seem so right to me, but can never be equal to God’s understanding, and likely misses something important which might remove me from what God wants to do, but who knows? Yes, we need the Spirit and the word, and faith, simple faith and trust. I know I need that.

Both “From life and Scripture we learn why we see things not only as they are, but as we are” and “our capacity to create an alternative reality that lives in our own minds as we measure ourselves by ourselves… and compare ourselves among ourselves.” are very hard concepts to grasp. That seems to be like “myoptic”(near sighted) thinking, understanding and reasoning, only seeing things from my own limited view.

Desiring God’s Spirit to dwell in us that opens our eyes to more than right or wrong thinking from our own point of view to a vastly different outlook if one just takes the time to learn from Him which will broaden our view.

Mart, I went to see that movie “The Shack” and now I am reading the book. It seems from what I understand that the time spent with wisdom as well as the Godhead was exactly this to broaden the way Mack looked at God, circumstances and people. As he grew deeper in his relationship with God the blinders started to be taken off, the box we often place God in as well as others was opening to a better understanding which to Mack was giving him a sense of freedom from many things.

Interesting topic. I read somewhere that one in four people have a mental disorder. Seems there are numerous mental disorders like depression, anxiety, ADHD, obsessiveness, schizophrenia, bipolar and so forth. I recall taking a psychiatry course in college and diagnosis of mental disorders can be difficult as some people appear very normal and it is not until you closely examine their responses and actions that you see “something is a little off”.

In a personal environment it is hard to diagnosis specifically what a persons problem is and on a blog it would be impossible. Having written two blogs now for many years I sometimes encounter people who give good answers and then all of a sudden they display abnormal behavior and hostility or they comment off the mark. We bloggers simply call them trolls but they very well could have a mental disorder.

People are very good at disguising mental issues and I have observed they often hide behind religion, politics, special interests etc. It is only when they let their guard down that they are often discovered.

How do we know who is normal and who has a mental problem. It is like the normal person draws a bulls eye on the side of the barn and then shoots arrows at it until they get proficient in hitting the bulls eye. The circumstances and facts show they are pretty normal trying to hit the target.

But then there is the person who has a mental issue and they in turn shoot an arrow into the side of the barn and then paint a bulls eye around where it hit. They do not put forth the effort and instead have the sequence out of order.

I agree with Mart’s statement that “in life we learn to see things not only as they are but we also see things as we are”. Past that I’m not sure I could totally agree. Seeing ourselves in an alternative reality seems to me the definition of mental disorder. Life around us seems to steer us in that direction with all the virtual reality shows and internet games.

Staying grounded in scripture seems to me to be a reality that we can align ourselves with but some use scripture inappropriately and skew it to be what they want and not what mentally healthy people see in the same verses. their difference may be slight and not readily apparent.

So if one in four has a mental disability and applying math – therefore if 12 people are writing on this blog that would mean that three have a mental disability. Since I know that I’m okay that narrows it down for the rest of you. That is just a joke people and not intended to be taken seriously but it does point out that here on a blog we can’t know who or how many are affected by mental illness.

Since mental illness has various diagnosis and people hide it well it means to me we need to base our comments on reality and not someone else’s perceived reality. If it doesn’t line up properly with scripture or if the behavior is consistently off its mark then the person commenting may have a problem and not us.

I learned over the years that dealing with a person who has a mental disability is hard for us untrained folk. It takes a professional and if we try we can get drawn into the alternative world that is theirs.

The battle is within myself, trusting God is getting to know God.

    GOD KNOWS BEST

Our Father knows what’s best for us,
    So, why should we complain-
    We always want the sunshine,
But He knows there must be rain-
We love the sound of laughter
    And the merriment of cheer,
But our hearts would lose their tenderness
If we never shed a tear…
    Our Father tests us often
    With suffering and with sorrow,
He tests us not to punish us,
But to help us meet tomorrow…
    For growing trees are strengthened
    When they withstand the storm,
And the sharp cut of the chisel
Gives the marble grace and form…
    God never hurts us needlessly,
And He never wastes our pain
For every loss He sends to us
    Is followed by rich gain…
And when we count the blessings
That God has so freely sent,
We will find no cause for murmuring
    And no time to lament…
For our Father loves His children,
And to Him all things are plain,
So He never sends us pleasure
When the soul’s deep need is pain…
    So whenever we are troubled,
    And when everything goes wrong,
It is just God working in us
    To make our spirit strong.

    Good Afternoon All

I smiled as I read Steve’s comment, “In the course of life I think most of us can ask who among us is not a little off center and for that matter who decides where center is.”, inasmuch as those were my thoughts upon finishing Mart’s new post.

So if we are ALL a little off center, are we to ignore/excuse friend or foe that is WAY off center? A serial killer, a pedophile, a rapist, and other similar sorts are probably severely mentally ill….then there are the thieves and addicts….probably a lesser degree of mental illness… How are we to help them? I know that we are to pray for them, but then what is our responsibility? Seriously? What?

  8. poohpity says:

There have been three that have openly admitted they have mental health issues. I think the bigger point is that all humanity is not quite right everyone has issues in some shape or form.

Emotions just are. They are neither right or wrong they just exist. Here is way to sort this out. “Paradigms power perception and perceptions power emotions.” “Most emotions are responses to perceptions–what one thinks is true about any given situation. If your perception is false then the emotional response to it will be false too. So check your perceptions and beyond that check the truthfulness of your paradigm–what you believe. Just because one believes something firmly does not make it true. Be willing to reexamine what one believes. The more one lives in the truth, the more your emotions will help one see clearly. But even then one doesn’t want to trust them more than God.”

  9. joycemb says:

Yes Mart, having the spirit within makes all the difference whether mentally, physically or emotionally ill; along of course with those deemed ‘healthy. One again, all are equal at the foot of the cross; though some more healthier may need to bend a little–get uncomfortable even–to recognise how equal they are.

  10. poohpity says:

Our responsibility towards anyone is to love them the way we have been loved by God. It is all about relationships. Our relationship with God which effects our relationship to/with others. But if that primary relationship is not there one will either act superior or inferior to others rather than circular like hand in hand.

  11. bubbles says:

I work with a couple of individuals who I have reasons to believe have some sort of illness. Working all day with them is exhausting. Some days are good and some are rough. Violence is a frequent part of this.

  12. SFDBWV says:

I guessed the picture on our subject to be that of Robin Williams. A sad and tragic story.

When I first took Matthew to a rehabilitation Hospital under the supervision of a neuro-specialist he wanted me to have Matt see a psychologist there on the hospital staff.

I balked at the idea of having someone messing with Matthew’s tender mental condition just waking from a coma and very confused about a great many things.

However once I met John ( A doctor of psychology) my fears we abated. The very first thing John did was have me set Matt up with a Psychiatrist so that Matt could have the proper specialist in place to decide if there were any medications that could help Matt.

It was an excellent connection and one that lasted for several years until no longer needed.

For some people a simple mental imbalance can be attributed to hormones or a chemical imbalance, which can be treated very easily.

After all the idea is to bring relief to anyone suffering from mental illness.

However is that what this subject of Mart’s is about? The truly mentally ill or is it about our perception of whether a person is just “Not Right” according to our unqualified views.

Is it then placed upon us to determine whether a person is just being difficult or unpleasant as a result of a physical or mental condition or just because they are difficult and unpleasant.

Is a spoiled child mentally ill?

There is just so many things that have brought us to the place where we are mentally that to take them up here would take many pages of examples and reasons.

But unless we just are so mentally ill that we can’t tell right from wrong we all should be able to tell when a person’s behavior is not acceptable among a community of others.

And to view unacceptable behavior as a mental illness may just be “not right” either.

I know a couple people who are very mentally ill who come across as being so vocal about their Christianity that they are obviously sick.

One such man who stood in traffic stopping cars to tell the drivers about the Lord, quoting scripture in a fast and very well versed manner, but obviously mentally ill to the most untrained of observers.

However if we are just talking about people who just rub others the wrong way or who can’t take a hint or refuse to receive good advice, we just aren’t talking about mental illness.

If I am right about Robin Williams being the man in the picture, he did everything to hide his depression by trying to be loved by everyone by being nice, not by being unpleasant. But then there may be those who hide from people because of their depression and push people away.

Everyone deserves our attempts to love them, it just is that some people make it much harder to do so.

Thereby placing the responsibility with us rather than they accepting the blame for their bad behavior.

    Can’t win with this subject.

    09 degrees and clear.

  13. SFDBWV says:

I also wanted to say that making us all change our clocks and get up an hour early this morning can be said to be “Not Quite Right” also.

  14. narrowpathseeker says:

Bubbles, I think it would be very helpful to all of us if you could share how you deal with these individuals. Is the violence ever directed towards you? Does it rob you of your peace and joy? Love is the most important aspect of our relationship with the Lord and it seems to me that without it we lose much power that we would have otherwise. I am wondering that when praying for people that seem to get their greatest enjoyment in making others miserable, if the power shorts out with the contempt that they ignite.

I am thinking of Romans 12:18 and I am wondering “if it be possible” has any further instruction for when it is NOT POSSIBLE to live in peace with some people. Once I have prayed and done good unto them for years and they remain the same and I find myself waiting for the hot coals on their head, I see myself as evil as I see them.

So PLEASE I would really like to know how others rise above the ugliness that flows contagiously from “difficult” people. I also need prayer from those who have not yet been contaminated and suffered a power outage in their prayer life. Thank you.

While I ask daily, before intercessory prayer, to be delivered from all evil, for mercy, forgiveness, and to be washed in the blood of Jesus and filled with His love, I can not deny the ugliness I feel towards some people that I pray for…even in telling the Lord what He already knows. I am thinking of

  15. narrowpathseeker says:

Steve, once again…thank you! I believe you are right!! I think there is true mental illness and there are terms developed for difficult people to excuse them from their mal behaviors. I actually DO feel compassion for the truly mentally ill(well, with serial killers, etc, I have to really stretch my imagination) but I need much prayer and help in dealing with “diffiuctl” people when I believe they have no other goal in life than to be a stumbling block to anyone they meet along the way because they must be first…top dog….the center of attention and will stop at nothing to eliminate anyone they view as competition.

Again…PLEASE…I need prayer from the truly righteous among us. We need to have our Power restored…there is much work to do… thank you.

  16. jeff1 says:

Narrow, I have discovered that even those I love do things that I hate and if it were not for my love of them I would not excuse their behaviour.

These are people that I interact with daily and I have come to know their behaviours and what to like and what not to like about them.

I know it is the same for them because my friend once admitted what she hated about me and I truly hate things about her too but the truth is that we focus on what we like about each other more than we don’t like and it is in doing this that I/she has remained friends since primary school.

When it comes to our enemies that is a very different ball game.

It is true that some are hard to love but then the truth is I can be hard to love myself so my way around this is to focus on the people I like and that reminds me of the goodness of people rather then the badness.

I often find that those I like are not necessary Christians yet goodness flows from them proving that there is more to being Godly than calling oneself Godly.

Like yourself I struggle with seeing ugliness in others and my way around this is to accept that I have ugly thoughts and words for others too.

Once I accept my own weaknesses then others weaknesses become more acceptable because I am learning that God does not expect us to be perfect but by putting these people in our lives He is learning us new strengths.

If I did not know nasty people then I would not see that I can be nasty too.

God looks for my good side the things He likes about me and builds on that and He does the same with others and so I must remember that that as He uses my circumstances and His spirit in my life He is doing the same in another’s.

Personally, I don’t try to deal with ugliness in others, I try to understand why they are ugly and when I do that I know from my own weaknesses whether or not I am likely to have enough empathy to help them or leave it in God’s hands.

If you find that you are not overcoming the difficulties that exist and have existed for some time between you and your enemy/ies then accept that there is a lack of understanding between both parties and leave it in God’s hands.

I don’t always find the outcome is ideal but God is not expecting perfection but submission to Him when our difficulties overwhelm us and the truth is often other peoples ugliness do overwhelm me.

  17. SFDBWV says:

Ok I am going straight to the issue as I see it.

Are we as struggling Christians who strive to live a holy life expected to feel guilty for seeing the behavior of some people as just plain nasty?

Twice Mart has ask if “Could this be why our Savior offered us His Spirit, and not just His words?”

My answer to that question is this. How do we know if it is the Holy Spirit we hear in our hearts; by its agreeing with what is written in His word.

Are we to change what is written because we “think” differently or are led differently than what the Word says?

    Heaven forbid.

The Word did not condone bad behavior it explained it. The Word does not excuse it, but offers those responsible for it to be born again and change their bad behavior into righteous and holy behavior instead.

I would have to be mentally ill myself not to be able to recognize a spoiled or nasty person for what they are. Can I forgive them? Certainly, especially if the ask for it.

What does the word say about strife and those responsible for it? It does not place the blame on those who suffer under its ugly influence. It says to confront it and get rid of it.

Do I really have to rewrite and copy all of what is written about this in Scripture? I won’t because an offender or those who introduce strife will only bring more strife into the community for it.

    Apples and oranges.

    Steve

  18. narrowpathseeker says:

Good Morning Vivian…. thank you for the story of you and your lifelong friend. It seems to me that there is much honesty and genuine respect between the two of you. I have great admiration for honesty which you have exhibited here from the beginning many times over. Thank you.

I too have life long friends and countless relatives(a couple of hundred or more of four generations) as well as 5 living children, 15 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 12 of their spouses and mates. Believe me……there are plenty of collective faults to be considered and forgiven while still loving them. I definitely recognize my own uglies and confess them, pray to be delivered from them, struggle to rise above them and have much remorse…seemingly..sometimes…. forever!!! My present problem is with those who show no remorse and continue to generate hate and chaos and for that I am requesting prayer. Thank you in advance for those prayers… Blessings….Pearl

  19. poohpity says:

“it is the Spirit of God who enables us to do what is necessary for a “now and not yet” right-in- God’s eyes,” harvest of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.”

When I consider my own life and the attempts I have made trying to change areas that need work, I often come away realizing it is beyond my efforts and something only God can do. He can change the way I think by replacing old thinking with new thinking, old reactions with new actions but it is Him that does the work when I trust and depend asking for His help. But first I have to admit or be honest that I need help.

When it comes to others God changes the way I experience and see them through His filter not my distorted one. I learned that it is also not my job to change others that is my god-complex(pride) thinking I even have that ability to begin with when there is so much lacking in me. If I could change them and make them perfect where does that leave me, still floundering with imperfection.

It serves me well in my heart when Jesus said, “the one without sin cast the first stone”. He seems to want me to see MY need for His forgiveness because I can only bring myself to the Cross to receive what He offered. He does not seem to talk to me about so and so and all their flaws only my own. I can not confess their sin only mine. He asked me with His help to treat others as I want to be treated and how He treated me, like while I was still His enemy with forgiveness, mercy and grace.

Steve: Thanks for posting the difference between personality quirks, defects and odd or unusual behavior and mental illness. I have been pondering this very same topic and that is what I planned to comment on, so you relieved me from doing so. Yours is very well stated.

I do not believe we have all been mentally ill at one time but I do believe we have mood swings, unusual responses to certain stimuli, and changes in behavior depending on our individual personality. That does not make us mentally ill.

As I read back in this site I realized that familiarity has given some the ability to put hot button words in a comment to get a response from others to which the writer can then go off topic and goad another writer or make their point. It seems to me we need to be cautious to recognize this characteristic and avoid falling into the trap.

We don’t always know why people do or say the things they do but we have to respect their right to do so. If we take the bait then that is our fault for being drawn into another’s trap.

Understanding the difference between mental illness and personalty defects or quirks is important in my opinion to be able to deal with difficult people. Maybe sometimes it is just better to avoid the ‘bait’ and keep our silence.

  22. poohpity says:

I has been since the first people that sat foot on this earth to BLAME someone else for their behaviors as God was speaking to them and it has not stopped yet. It seems that those who have the Spirit of God living in them have learned that healing takes place only upon confessing one’s own part and taking responsibility. It sure would have been nice if Adam said, “I made the choice to take of the fruit you told me not to” as he stood there with his wife but instead blamed her for giving it to him but he could have refused.

  23. poohpity says:

Even Moses when he was on the mountain on the east side of the Jordan river started to blame the people that the reason he could not go over to the promised land was because of their behavior not that he was feeling anger which resulted in him striking the rock rather than speaking to it as God had asked, so that the water would come pouring out. When Moses was sharing that with God and God said, “Enough”. It was not the people’s fault that Moses disobeyed God, it was his own fault.

  24. joycemb says:

Pearl in answer your question to bubbles if you don’t mind; you love them. Will you get frustrated, angry and even fearful at times- yes of course you will. But as followers of Christ it is God who decides how long the ministry to love another will last- how long that person is in your life, work or blog. I believe all encounters are Holy encounters, and they will either teach us more about the depth of His love or bring His love to a very lost and hurting individual He not only died to save but is still waiting patiently for that lost sheep to return. One never knows when Jesus with skin still on is needed. But if your purpose in life is peace and comfort, you will do whatever it takes to maintain that comfort, and souls will be lost. Jesus said He didn’t come to bring peace but a sword. Not to destroy the sinner but the sin. And He will stretch is beyond our individual capabilities every time. Only Jesus can cut to the very marrow of a matter with healing balm applied. Our cutting leaves an open wound, like the disciple of Jesus that cut off the soldiers ear, yet He will heal our wounds also. He’s amazing!

Someone mentioned training to deal with folks with a MI. Yes!!! Absolutely important. If you do not have proper training than get training or find another vocation but boundaries are so important, for yourself and the person that has no boundaries. If you can teach them and have the patience or trust that Gods in the process and will guide you step by step then go for it! If not, trust that God has someone else who has what the other person needs. God is very patient with all of us, and does not call us to do anything He does not equip us for.

(From my years of work as a Lead staff in a mental health rehab facility.)

  28. joycemb says:

Forgiveness is crucial also. Each day I went to work was a clean slate for me as I take “His mercies are new every morning” literally. How many times did I have to forgive? Daily. To this day I thank God for each new day I wake up in the morning, knowing yesterday is past and that whatever I encounter today is Gods will and plan for me. What joy I have knowing He is my strength, hope, and love!

One source of training is “NAMI”, National Alliance on Mental Illness. There are probably other organizations in other countries. been thinking of this story of late….God forbid moses from going into the promise land because of sin and God did to mose what he needed not what he wanted. yes you may have a difficult time understanding why and even in the asking. thinking if moses had been allowed to go into the promise land, if it was me i would be asking, is this all there is???? 40 years for this????? God in His Grace and Mercy let moses see it from afar. moses, joshua and calib were content to walk with God and trust Him even in the wilderness or anywhere He lead them. moses understood when he went up the mountain he was not coming back to the camp. moses is a picture of the righteous living by faith.

Once again, could this be why our Savior offered us his Spirit, and not just his words?

how does freedom, self control, and the absolute Sovereignty of God abide together? think self control and God control? ………….how is this possible? self control only comes from God! it is the absences of the influence of darkness and evil. Jesus said those who sin are slave to sin they have a master and he it is cruelty and death. we need the Word of God, the Spirit of God, and the Grace of God to enjoy this freedom and self control in His benevolent and Gracious Sovereignty. grace and truth be with you as it is with Christ.

Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,

Yes Chris having a MI affects people from all populations. By googling NAMI you can find out what’s available in your city or region. You could also check with your local gov. to see what support groups are available for families of people with a MI where tools are given to learn to be supportive and take care of yourself as well. Chris your student was wise to understand he was not safe around others without his meds. Thank him for respecting the group by his decision to stay away. Perhaps he will find the courage to trust others enough to do what is good and right, without feeling shame and embarrassment as is usually the case. God bless him and you in Gods work.

Hugs when appropriate, letting them know they are important and they are seen and heard. Lots of research for best practices, trying new things with them, asking if they would like to try certain accommodations and asking for their feedback, asking for help from co workers with more background experience, asking for help from other professionals. Messing up, and trying again and again. Mistakes show we are trying. It is exhausting, but I think these and I are together, and I can learn from them and maybe I can use what I learn to help someone else some day. Then some days, I just do not know… wishing I could know exactly what to do to help the most, and often feeling like I do not do enough. I cannot be too specific due to confidentiality. Praying for wisdom.

  37. poohpity says:

Mental illness is not different from any other illnesses that people suffer from. It just effects a different part of the body. It cripples the way people think which then effects their behavior. Some of it is a chemical imbalance just like diabetes and medicine helps but more importantly they need new tools and new ways of thinking to live life. It is nothing to be ashamed of and those that seek help usually end up living life more abundantly compared to those who never admit they need help who withdraw from people and life. Many people have troubled thinking but those who think they do not have troubled thinking are usually the ones who have it the worst and stay stuck in a rut doing the same things over and over not making any headway or progress in life.

The Lord seems very concerned about our thinking processes because it effects our relationship with Him and with others. It causes harm often a lot of harm in how one interacts with anyone around them.

  38. poohpity says:

As Mart stated above, “Together we learn from illusionists, con artists, political strategists, and wise counselors—that we see what we expect (and sometimes want) to see.” As we can see in what is going on today around the world that we are fed many things that are not true and can be made to look good when they are actually not. People hide their real circumstance, thinking or actions in order to sway others to their side. Even thinking about so called wise counselors, wise compared to what or who. They could be wise in leading others astray.

What do we have to compare anything to. For me I compare what I hear to God’s word or if it has to do with other areas doing much research and by listening to differing views but still comparing it to the wisdom found in God’s word. In God’s word there are many times that the mind is addressed along with the other parts of what makes us, us. Several times it talks about sheep who are lead astray when speaking about humans it happens in all those areas Mart mentioned above. Being lead astray because we if we hear something we agree with even if it is not true, just or right people tend to follow like sheep.

  39. foreverblessed says:

Ever since this topic came up, I have been thinking about people with mental illness that commit crimes. And then Chris comes with the story about a prisoner who can do awful things when he does not take his medicines.
It might seem not quite right when people who have committed terrible crimes, and yet do not get terrible prison sentences.
    That might seem unfair!
But when you would understand that it was the mental illness involved, like the guy Chris was talking about, wouldn’t you agree?
God is like that, He does things that do not seem quite right.
And on a side note, what does that innate do in prison? He should be in a special place for mental illness treatment.

I have said this before, in our country they changed the policy for imprisonment, many are treated in different institutions, ( but monitored carefully) and there are many prison cells empty. The prison in my town is now closed, it is now for asylum seekers.

But of course, there are always those who take advantage of that, and make it appear as if they are mentally ill, while there are people who have been taken over by evil.

I would like to end in a positive note: Christ is the High Priest who has offered Himself for cleansing of sins of everybody! If they turn in faith to Christ.
And I pray Christ will reveal Himself to all, in the end, so they can turn to Him.

  40. SFDBWV says:

Well it looks as if tomorrow will be a busy mess with all the predictions of a “nor-easter”. That will mean no computer time until dealing with 5-8 inches overnight.

It occurred to me yesterday while dealing with repetitive comments that it is as I referred to earlier around and around this issue goes with no end.

Until a person who is offensive to everyone else accepts the fact that they are, and truly repents by asking forgiveness for their actions and then changes their behavior, the dance will continue.

Until they see it and accept it, all of their actions are justified in their minds and hearts.

Sadly this gets close to what may be the unforgivable sin in that they are closing off the voice of the Holy Spirit and only listening to their own, never truly seeking forgiveness, only looking for a free pass.

If you consider that every life lived every death recorded all of the examples of Scripture are given so that we can know God and how He wants us to live.
That unless we adopt the lifestyle God has shown by all of the lives and deaths of the men and women of Scripture and of all the examples given then it is all wasted on us.

“Cast not thy pearl before swine.” Does not mean not to offer pearls to pigs, it means don’t waste your time offering pearls of wisdom to those who can’t appreciate them.

Jesus continues to knock at the door any who opens the door and invite Him in will be blessed, but there is a time coming when the opportunity will be gone. Now is the time for our salvation, now.

Cold hard truth at 14 degrees.

    Steve

  41. poohpity says:

Steve, didn’t you get a free pass or get out of jail free card when Jesus forgave you? So why all the finger pointing? That must mean you have nothing in your life that God needs to forgive. Wisdom calls out that we should not inspect others when our own life is so full of imperfections. Only the One who is perfect can do that but instead He came to save. Can you save or change the person/s you are speaking of?

  42. poohpity says:

Mart wrote, “how we treat the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, and the prisoner reflects our relationship to Him (Matt. 25:35–36). Who would have dreamed that when someone insults us, or when we help or hurt another, the One who loves us takes it personally?” in today’s ODB.

  43. jeff1 says:

My mum said that mental illness run in families so it is not surprising that I suffer as my brother suffered from he was in his early teens until he died age 61.

Also on my fathers side there was mental illness. When I was very ill I could not sleep for my mind racing and all I could think of was that something bad was going to happen either my family or me.

While the medication keeps away the symptons, stress can cause relapsing and I need a lot of support which I get from my family and friends.

I probably do seem quite right to those not close to me but I suffer from paranoia and loss of concentration and those close to me do have to watch my behaviour so that I can get more treatment if needed.

The most difficult part of mental illness is accepting that you have it as in my mind it was everyone else who had the problem and not me.

Accepting it is not easy because you want to be normal and unlike physical inability people have little empathy with mental illness.

I worked with a man whose wife suffered and he would say things like ‘she needs to pull herself together’ and so you start to feel isolated and that makes you feel even worse.

There has always been a stigma and still is and that is why you only trust the medical profession, family and closest friends when you suffer with it.

I am blessed to have both and now manage by taking a day at a time and not worrying what others say about it because there is much negativity surrounding mental illness.

  44. SFDBWV says:

Several years ago a man called me on the phone and said a mutual acquaintance had recommended that he call me.

He told me he was a disabled veteran living in public housing in a nearby town and wanted to be able to get a house. His friend had told him I might be able to help.

When I met him he was very friendly and while a little odd he seemed to be genuine. He said he suffered from a bipolar condition and received a pension from the military for it.

Quoting Scripture and assuring me he was a Christian man and any house I could help him get he would make us all proud, be a good neighbor and an asset to our community.

I helped get him a home.

Very soon though as time went along what I discovered was that he was expert at using his “condition” to gain sympathy from strangers and get everyone else to do everything for him.

He used his “condition” as a way of getting in, but then I discovered he used other people to “hold” his money that he made in a cash only operation so as not to pay taxes on.

He sued the Garrett County Maryland Department of Health because they had sent him to a counselor who turned out to be a homosexual and had according to him tried to “hit” on him.

The insurance for the GCMDH paid him $40,000 dollars in a no trial settlement. It turns out this wasn’t his first law suit.

He then went to Bolivia to further his timber business. Which he keeps his name out of in a “nonprofit” organization.

I was forced a couple years ago to have the local health department and DNR make him remove the pigs and chickens he had living in the house with him. He thought if they were in the house I would not find out about them, as we have laws against such things.

His house looks like a dump both inside and out. I actually had a fence build around some of my own property to hide some of his mess.

He has been arrested in Maryland for assault against a “lady” friend. Tried unsuccessfully to have me arrested for threatening him. Has not a single person in town as a friend as he don’t interact with anyone he can’t use.

He claims to be Christian, he claims to be mentally ill, he claims to be impoverished, but the truth is far from him.

He has become expert at using people’s sympathy to get what he wants, free, without doing any work to accomplish his desires. Especially from Christian people.

I can actually say more, but I think you all may get the point.

There is nothing Christian about his behavior, and he uses the excuse of being mentally ill to escape being prosecuted or judged.

How can I ignore such blatant behavior?

The truth is always just under the smoke and mirrors people put up and never hidden from God.

mart is speaking about spiritual illness not mental illness aka bad thinking.

picture if you will a large crowd and a speaker. the speaker is done speaking. the crowd is not silent, but making noises. some agree with everything the speaker says. some disagree with some of the things said. the speaker speaks and asks for quiet so to speak again. the crowd settles down to hear in the hope there is clarification on what they are thinking or not thinking. the speaker asks the crowd to divide into two groups in there minds. in there minds he asked those who agree with everything he has said to move to on side of the meeting place and the others who disagree to move to the other side. the speaker address those who agree with him on every point. he tells them they are at a dead end there is no place for them to move forward. there is no room for progress because there minds are closed and the one speaking to them is not The Christ. to the other group on the other side he says there is hope for you.

i say this and understand this from job’s three friends who came to visit him, there is hope for them!

I was thinking this morning…about the virgins with no oil for their lamps. People that bring darkness and no light probably need some Oil, but perhaps plan on getting it from somebody else.

  49. mtman says:

Yesterdays sermon in our church seems on point with this topic. There was a study at Cornell University about incompetent people. Results were that incompetent people do not see themselves as incompetent and have high confidence in what they do. It can be the same with offending people as well as they do not see themselves as offenders and are totally confident that they are justified and right. It it the other person/s problem and they need to adjust their life and attitude.

The other part of the sermon was how when you look at two or more people we see the outer shell. We don’t know what is inside. If they have the Holy Spirit inside them they have an engine driving them on with guidance, direction and purpose. The other person without the Holy Spirit has no Godly guidance, purpose or direction other than their inner voice and conscience.

When you add in a survey done by Barna that 8 out of 10 active church going Christians don’t believe in the Holy Spirit that adds a new light to the above and is alarming. If that is true that means that 8 out of 10 Christians are being led by their own conscience and not by God. In reality they are setting their own course.

That would mean that average normal looking people who do not have the Holy Spirit within them are like the people in the Cornell study. They see themselves as Christian and it is others that have the problem. They may have studied the bible and can probably quote verses but they lack the Holy Spirit within them and are directing their own course. They have only paid lip service in turning their lives over to Jesus. They are the illusionists and extremely confident in themselves. We may not know who they are but God does.

That goes back to my other post that we need to regularly examine our own lives for sin and problem areas like looking through the wrong end of a telescope. We need to look with pinpoint focus at our own flaws and in doing so will not be so focused on others sins and flaws.

We may not always know where others are coming from but sometimes their actions give them away when they are critical of others and self serving, pious and contrite about themselves. they are proficient in correcting others but in reality are empty inside and just want to be identified with actual Christians so they pretend. That is more a spiritual sickness and not so much a mental illness.

  50. SFDBWV says:

Mtman I like that statement, “spiritual sickness” it fits a great many problems within the “Body” today.

Matt will be coming to the computer in a little bit and I won’t be back most likely until later this afternoon or tomorrow sometime.

The emergency people keep calling me about the possibility of 16 inches of snow. I reminded them that on March 13, 1993 we had a snow storm that put down 3 feet with an additional 12 inches the 14th.

We are as prepared as we can be, but please pray for us all as we know a Man who can still the storm.

Steve, praying for you and the family. Do you have a generator? Also praying for ALL others that may be effected by this upcoming storm.

Yes, Joyce and didn’t “REPENT” come from the lips of Jesus too. Did He say go forth and see how many people you can make miserable daily and NEVER EVER say you’re sorry or if you do just say it arrogantly so they will know you don’t mean it so you can really upset them?

  55. saled says:

Not quite right. Dr. J.Vernon McGee used to say in his Thru the Bible radio broadcast that we are all unbalanced, that Jesus was the only perfectly balanced person. But what I love about Jesus is that he seemed not quite right also, as Mart hints at in his question “How could defenders of what is right be so wrong?”.

For example: Jesus ate with publicans and sinners. Jesus worked on the Sabbath. Jesus touched lepers. He sat and talked with the woman at the well. He broke the rules, so how could he be right?

This topic is near and dear to my heart, and something that I have thought about for a long time. My grandson was diagnosed at age 2 with autism, and since that time, I have done a lot of reading about this condition and the advances in brain imaging and what we have learned from that. I am convinced that a lot of our behavior depends on the structure of the wiring in our brain and our brain chemistry. But I am equally convinced that the essence of a person is hidden beneath these things and does not depend on our actions. This is a fascinating topic and my question is just what is God’s purpose in these things? I am convinced that those with mental health issues are not less than any of the rest of us. I hope to be able to comment further in the next day or two as here in Down East Maine, we are looking at another day or two off from school due to the weather.

  56. poohpity says:

Sally I am so looking forward to reading your educated comments.

  57. joycemb says:

Pearl when I forgive someone it doesn’t matter to me what their attitude, job skills, education, arrest record, hair color or favorite ways of causing irritation may be. Does forgiving hinge on the actions of the offendee? Can I forgive the vilest human being who shows no remorse or compassion? Can I suffer another’s sins like Jesus did, all the way to death? Am I willing to take a hit for Jesus, like He did for me? All questions we must ask ourselves when asked to do the hard things, like forgive our enemies. The Way of Jesus was never meant to be easy apart from Him.

Pearl this helps me a lot when dealing with difficult situations:
    James 1:2-3
    Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

In this case do we trust God enough to handle the outcome- a good outcome in spite of all of our shortcomings. The good outcome being that God is glorified through our depravity as street just mentioned.

  60. foreverblessed says:

Thank you Saled for your comment,
first about Jesus: “Jesus did things that did not seem quite right”
And that about the Sabbath, has been dear to my heart, to speak in your words, as I was brought up with the understanding that the Sabbath is the seventh day, Period.
Jesus came to show that there was a deeper meaning to the Sabbath! A spiritual rest, a rest in faith in Christ, that we stop our own works, and the works we do are in the Spirit, spiritual, and forever true.
If you take the Sabbath command spiritual, then this could be true what Paul said: The one keeps a day, and does it for God, and to other does not keep a day, and also does it for God.
Taking the commands literal, that is what I have done.
I still take the command literal, for not committing fornication, as what Paul says, the body is involved, the sin is also against your own body. This is not the reason why I keep that command, it is because our of love for my own partner.

Anyway, thatis maybe going of topic.

But about autism, and things not quite right:
I have met here somebody who has autism, she has to focus every time what the setting is, coming into a room, she has to thinkk it over, this is a living room etc. Making automatic connections, or in other word: Associations, is not happening in their brains.
(I went to a course on autism, just to get to know what it is about). There are many kinds, but this is the one she was haveing. SHe was telling me that at the end of the day, she is so tired, of all the drawing of conclusions she had to do.
She told me about her brother, who also has autism, that at one time when he was being set on edge, he killed a person! It was a short annunciation, and she did not want to say anymore about it.
And then I remembered that some time ago I had read the witness of a christian, who had the Holy Spirit talking to him: Can you forgive this person, as he has committed a murder due to his brain damage? In other wordsm if he would not have had that brain disorder he would not have killed anybody.
Do not overstretch a person with certain type of autism, they might get so angry, and do things that are not quite right.

Foreverblessed, I just came in from plowing snow, it is still snowing. It did not begin until about 1 am and we have about 5 inches right now. The forecasters had guessed somewhere between 5-8 or 6-10 overnight, but then overnight isn’t over yet.

It looks as if the storm will impact the east coast all the way up to Maine as it travels north much worse than for us here. However we will get more snow as the day wears on.

I see on the news that Turkey is upset with the Netherlands. It isn’t only individuals that have trouble getting along when entire nations get involved.

I am happy you have good weather, ours will get better as the calendar changes months…And then it starts all over again.

    Steve

  64. SFDBWV says:

As far as true mental illness is concerned with regards to their relationship with God I am convinced that they, like little children, are blameless before God and are not held accountable for their deeds.

There is a famous story just about such a thing that will test the strongest man’s attempt not to be touched in their heart with sadness or sympathy.

    “Of Mice and Men”.

I pray as the day moves along we can remember that everyone hurts and we have no business making anyone hurt more.

Tell someone you love them and give them a hug if you can. It could be the last memory you have of them, or they of you.

    Steve

  65. joycemb says:

Hi Steve and Forever the weather differences can be striking can’t they yet they give us hope always for a better day. The phrase ‘true MI’ caught my attention and reminds me of Jesus words on the cross “Father forgive them for they know not what they do”. Blind lead by the blind. Until Jesus opens eyes we can’t see, that is true spiritual blindness. Maybe that hug and I love you will be what opens someone’s eyes today. Great thought Steve!

  66. poohpity says:

It seems often times people that are not quite right look at others who are not quite right so that they can put their selves in a position of feeling superior in some way. That is the same with using rules if one follows them they feel superior over those who fail but Jesus sees all of us a not quite right and in need of Him to bring us into a state of rightness and uses methods that are not quite right to get us that way.

Often one tends to look at those with autism in a negative light but here are a few that had autism and are very well known; Einstein, Mozart, Sir Isaac Newton, Darwin, Thomas Jefferson, Michelangelo, Hans Christian Andersen, Andy Warhol and Emily Dickinson just to name a few.

  67. joycemb says:

Yes pooh there are many negative responses to any type of illness but as Steve said a hug and an “I love you” works wonders!

  68. joycemb says:

Pooh I’m sending you a virtual hug and my love to you. (((Hug))) Hope your day is filled with blessings, hope, and very little pain. Joyce

  73. foreverblessed says:

Steve, thanks for your interest for my country! If was quite tense last Saturday night! Turkey has become very bold, I my opinion since Europe made a deal with Turkey I 2015 about all the refugees. EU is paying some billion euros for keeping the refugees in Turkey, for tents, food etc. I hope and pray they spend it well on all these people that have fled the war in their own town!

Can I ask you guys, ( and girls) of the blog to pray for my country, as we will have elections tomorrow. Their are many reasonable parties to vote for. No need to vote for a man who is only yelling: the Netherlands for the Dutch only!
I do not like nationalism, I am a Christian anyway, with a passport from heaven!
That people will not vote out of fear for whatever!

Last night we had a comedian on tv on the election, he said the last two years, or was it one year, a thousand people have died in the EU, due to terroristic attacks. But at the same, the same span of time, thousands and thousands have died due to smoking. So he concluded that if safety of the citizens is your real aim, take action on smoking!
To me that was a thought that brings nuance.
Mart is a man who brings nuance, that’s why I come here, also because of you guys….and girls.

  74. foreverblessed says:

Oh, all the typos, sorry! If should be it ( it was quite tense last Saturday.) I should be in, as in my opinion, and in 2015.
And the EU is paying many billions of euros for the refugees to be taken care of by the Turkish government.

God bless you all, and I hope you are all doing well in the snow! The sun is gone here, behind the clouds, and will set soon!

  75. poohpity says:

forever, it sounds like your country might follow the British with the Brexit, yours being the Nexit with Wilders leading. 76. poohpity says:

not My God but May God. lol

  77. foreverblessed says:

Yes, you want things changed and then you vote for a clown.

  78. SFDBWV says:

I have said about all I can with regards to the base subject. I have divided the difference between truly mentally ill people and just plain difficult ones and whereas I am certainly not qualified to discuss mental illness I do have plenty of experience in wrestling with my sons difficulties due to his traumatic brain injuries.

If the subject stays up I will address some weather issues and may engage with others about abstract issues, but as for the subject I think I have gotten all the milk out that cow.

It has snow all day, but with little accumulation as the temperatures remain around 20 the sunshine through the clouds is enough to keep it down. After sundown we can expect more accumulation then.

If I had Glenna’s cell phone and knew how to use it I could have captured a Robin on the rock gobbling down seed. I watched him two or three separate times for several minutes each. Conformation once again that a Robin will eat seeds.

Foreverblessed I hope all ends well for the Netherlands elections. Once again it is the Muslims that are at the heart of the problems. A preacher I listened to a while back explained like this.

“These Islamic emigrants are not trying to immigrate to another Islamic country, it is Christian countries that are their goal, the reason is to make the world Islamic and push the Christians out.”

That is his take on the matter, not mine.

I think actually it is because the Christian countries have a better living condition, because they are Christian and that is the light that draws them in.

Difficult times require difficult decisions and God always put people where He wants them in order to bring about His will.

I think/hope the rapture is near, as just like mtman said there are Christians who do not believe in a Holy Spirit. I might add especially the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are also Christians who do not believe in a Rapture.

A subject perhaps for another day.

    Good evening to all.

    Steve

  79. poohpity says:

Forever, maybe it will take someone who is not quite right like the “clown” you mention to bring about change.

I know there is a big difference in leaders of countries and Jesus but those who were in the head positions and leaders of the religious community looked at Jesus and the things he did as blasphemous and heretical. I do not think they called him names like a clown but according to their perspective He said He was equal with God. John 7:28, 8:19, 14:7,9.

Maybe trying to milk a cow rather than a bull like mental illness and just plain difficult people to look deeper into the meaning of this subject, there may be more milk.

Thank you for the story of your autistic friend, foreverblessed. Temple Grandin is an autistic scientist who has been able to communicate much information about autism to the general public through her writing and speaking. She too makes the point that autistic people are all different, just as are neurotypicals, that is, the rest of us. And the brother that your friend mentioned reminded me that research shows there is a connection between autism and schizophrenia.
Thank you to pooh for the list of famous over achievers with autism. Research also shows that if we could remove the genes responsible for autism, schizophrenia, and other conditions from the human population, we would also be removing the genes responsible for those over achievers’ abilities.
And thank you to Joyce for the quote from Jesus on the cross. “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” These human bodies are so material, so tied to the earth, that the spirits who inhabit them are affected by so many things. I think of the Lord’s prayer, where it says, “thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” What or where is heaven? Is it a place, or a state of being, kind of like being in awe or being in love? Anyway, I wonder if all this struggle in the material world is leading up to God’s will being done on earth.

  81. poohpity says:

saled, you are saying something like being able to look past the immediate physical to something beyond our understanding that can only be seen or experienced when we let go of what we think we know?

  82. saled says:

pooh, I’m wondering if the physical and spiritual will be one when God’s will is done on earth as it is in heaven.

I’m not sure what Mart was referring to when he mentioned Paul reminding us of our capacity to create an alternate reality. What part of Paul’s writing do you (pooh and everyone) think he was referring to?

  83. SFDBWV says:

Up early to plow and clean off the snow. Will take measurements later, but guessing another 5 inches or so. Very windy. It is like one of the worst mornings of January at 08 degrees.

I would imagine Pat up there in Canada has it worse.

I startled a couple Robins this morning as they try to find a place out of the wind and cold.

Found a beautiful song/video yesterday for any interested, Tabitha Fair “Toward the Rising Sun”.

Glenna says that could be her funeral song, mine could be “Into the West” by Enya (Lord of the Rings).

    Steve

  84. SFDBWV says:

My last measurement before dark last evening was 3.3 inches of snow. This mornings was 4.0 inches even for a total of 7.3 inches for yesterday’s snowfall.

The National Weather Service has me take my measurements on a white “snowboard” they provided me with. Each time I measure the snow depth I clean off the board.

I also take measurements in several different locations so as to get a good average.

The wind is brutal, steady and unrelenting, which makes getting actual snowfall difficult.

The “Weather Channel” had predicted us for 8 to 12 inches yesterday, looks like we did better by getting less, but it also looks like this will keep up for the remainder of the week and into the weekend mixed with some freezing rain a day or so.

    Temperature has dropped to 07.

  85. jeff1 says:

When I take my eyes of Jesus, I wander from the truth of the gospel.

Lead me oh Lord, won’t you lead me
I am tired and I need Thy strength and power
To guide me over my darkest hour
For just open my eyes that I may see
Lead me oh Lord, won’t you lead me

Lead me, guide me along the way
For if you lead me I cannot stray
Or just open my eyes that I may see
Lead me oh Lord, won’t you lead me
I am lost if you take your hand from me
I am blind without try light to see

Lord just always let Thy servant be
Lead me oh Lord, won’t you lead me
Lead me, guide me along the way
For if you lead me I cannot stray

Lord just open my eyes that I may see
Lead me oh Lord, won’t you lead me

  86. poohpity says:

saled, I think what he is talking about is the one we can create in our own minds. Ever notice how people can read the same thing and come away with differing views? As he was eluding to in rest that it comes from who the person is before they read it like from behind prejudices, closed minds or already formed opinions that one misses the reality.

I am going to use media. Depending on who feeds us the news we can follow and believe what they say or think from one side or another rather than checking things out on our own sort of like brainwashing. Even with a police report they gather information from many resources to get a picture of the crime because everyone’s reality or where they are coming from is different. People do it with spiritual matters as well they believe what they are fed rather than checking it out on their own.

  87. poohpity says:

I also believe that Mart was trying to get us to see that most often people are extrospective looking at other people and circumstances rather than how God seems to want us to be introspective. Looking at ourselves because that is the only way we can see our need for Him. One could spend a lifetime telling others what they see as their problems but it really does no good only looking at our own hearts and honestly admitting our own problems areas which would prevent most from looking at others.

When one does that we develop several things empathy, compassion, mercy, forgiveness and most importantly a heart of gratitude for the grace we have been shown.

  88. jeff1 says:

Yes, Pooh, my father taught me the difference in being led by the Spirit and being led on what I was fed.

My father never allowed himself to be led by anything or anyone and his life reflected his discipline to Godly behaviour.

Not just his behaviour but his words and his attitude also reflected it which is rare indeed especially in a country where hatred and self righteousness was rife.

My father taught me what it was to be steadfast in his beliefs that Christlike behaviour was how a person should lead their life.

Lip service was not enough, my father concerned himself with being led by the spirit regardless of anyone else’s falling away.

A gift from God, very much so, because my father knew when he was not being led by the Spirit while others did not and that to me has to be God given and not man driven.

In modern day life it is much more difficult to find those like my dad with the gift of Godly discernment.

  89. mtman says:

I have already commented on what I could offer on this topic. I notice that Mart said “those of us” to start the blog rather than “those who” which would imply to me that he knows someone close that struggles with mental illness. Perhaps we all know someone.

I have to chuckle at the comments on snow. We have lived at 9,800′ elevation and we get on average 264″ of snow per year. Some places in the east are getting up to 2’and my sister in law reports almost that in NY. On Facebook I got a memory from 2013 where we had 119″ total year to date 4 years from today. The driveway was bare and most of the 119″ had melted. We get a 4-6 week lull each winter and then get our “second winter” in April and May. We only have 108″ so far but we will get another 150″ or so over the next two months.
Here in the mountains we have wind almost all winter long and 2-3′ of fresh snow can generate 4-6′ drifts. If you are not used to lots of snow dealing with 2′ can be daunting. For us that is average and usually we get a 3-4′ dump at least once a winter. We have gotten 72″ on one occasion. We just deal with it and know that it will take an extra day or two to clear a path. Our driveway is around 100 yards long so that takes time to clear. Our tractor has a snow thrower attachment and we have a walk behind snow thrower so we have mechanical means to move the snow. Our snow is coming and we love it as it provides moisture and physical activity.

  90. poohpity says:

I do not think God ever intended us to concentrate on the sin in ourselves or in others but to judge by the amount of faith one has. Romans 12:3 NLT

Viv, is it really important to look for people like your dad or to be concerned how others live their lives? Isn’t it more important whether each of us personally is living in a way that is pleasing to God? Knowing that it is pleasing to God to believe in Jesus following after Him, then our world changes, our perspective changes, our desires change, our goals and purpose changes.

  91. poohpity says:

Viv, please do not take what I said to down play the role your dad had in your life because his influence from your stories is simply amazing and you are truly blessed.

  92. SFDBWV says:

Yes mtman I too chuckle at any comparison to the weather we have here in West Virginia to anything in the Rocky Mountains. I am at 3,000 feet and the tops around me can reach 4200.

No contest, you win hands down.

A few years ago our winter snow totals reached 24 feet. I sent Mart pictures where the snow was up to the second level of my porch. We set a record here in town that year for the most snow in February. He posted the pictures on BTA for all to see.

My Aunt Ruth used to live in Vernal Utah where June snows were a regular event. She hated the weather, but loved the countryside.

I couldn’t use a snow blower where most of what I shovel, so it remains by hand and back until I can no longer do it.

There is a program coming on National Geographic this week about how California steals all the water from Colorado. It just amazes me that you are not allowed to collect rain water as a law, as I understand it.

Hard to keep the faith sometimes when dealing with Government at almost any level.

It has warmed up now to 12 degrees, but still looks like January instead of March.

Keep warm and dry my Rocky Mountain friend.

    Steve

  93. mtman says:

Steve: Eureka, Colorado relaxed its insistence on owning all the water including that which fell from above. Last August 10, it was legal for those not on municipal water and who had a well and legal permit to collect rain water. It can only be used by the permit owner, in a fully contained 55 gal barrel and only two barrel’s a year. We don’t collect water because we have two springs on our land that flow year around and we use our garden water from them. Our well provides all the rest.

My wife went shopping in town today and bought another 40# of sunflower seeds for the birds. Total this winter so far is 160# because we love to watch the birds. They are like a micro of humans. Some are polite and wait in turn and others just crowd in and push the others out. Some stay on the feeders and don’t allow the others to eat. Some like to pick fights and they are probably the mentally ill birds who were picked on by bullies when they were young and grew up that way. Much to learn by living remote with the wild life.

  94. jeff1 says:

Pooh, I do not find that I concentrate on my sin but what I find hard not to concentrate on is my omissions, when I should have made a better choice because it was the Godly thing to do but because of my selfishness rather than my sin I did not.

Other people have good reasons, they did not have the knowledge I had or a father who was showing me the way, so if my guilt is there it is because I am ashamed of my blindness given that I had guidance but was focused on the wrong guidance.

Wandering has caused my confusion and taking refuge in Christ is where I am because I fear my own choices.

Yes, I want to please God, it is keeping my mind focused on that but I have weaknesses that keep getting in the way.

It is a weakness of mine to not need other people and yet I do agree with you that if I stayed focused on Christ then I would be spiritually better for it.

It is only with God’s help I can overcome but I have to be able to stay focused on God for that to happen!

Thank you for your feedback and wondering are you finding that what you said about perspective, desires, goals and purpose changing, is this from your own experience?

  95. poohpity says:

Yes absolutely. I have found that several things consistently change while in this relationship with the Lord. I have ah-ha moments everyday. It is for me a continual process of failures and successes even learning submission is a process none of which I have yet mastered nor do I believe that I was meant to. The minute I think I have mastered something the Lord shows me I am still in process really keeping one humble and dependent on the Lord but then again I still struggle with pride issues. No matter at any given time am I without some struggle against the flesh. Thank God for His word that says Jesus understands our struggles. Heb 4:15 NLT

  96. jeff1 says:

You persevere and that in itself is growing and yes I know what you mean that God is always showing new things to us.

In my own struggles I think I still have an unhealthy fear of God because of my early teachings and therefore it is God who is patient as my failures often leave me fatigue and wondering if I am pleasing God at all.

I do seem to take refuge in Christ more than I grow in my relationship but I am also getting to trust that God understands and wants me to overcome my weaknesses rather than get angry with me for having them.

    Thank you for sharing, Pooh.

  97. SFDBWV says:

Yes mtman Glenna and I are also on first name basis with the clerks at Southern States for buying bird seed. Pearl and Frank on BTA are also feeders of the critters.

Like you have observed the animals that come in have some very human traits. Most are polite and enjoyable, some are hilarious and unfortunately some are as you say, too human in behavior.

I have said before that so many of the birds sing a beautiful song, while others just cluck and squawk. But it is impossible to separate them at the feeder.

I quit feeding the deer because they came in to many numbers fought with each other all the time and just made a mess as well as it become too expensive.

I will sign off for this day and God willing stop in tomorrow morning.

Thank you all for your prayer, our prime minister has done OK! His party is the greatest according to the exit polls.
The last couple of years I heard a small voice, pray for this man, he has a lot of responsibility for our country.
He is a christian, and a liberal. It did not seem quite right to me, but in line with this topic, what seems not quite right, maybe I need to see what is not seeable without human resources.
The crisis with Turkey must have helped the prime minister!
Many say that the game changer was Trump, since he is president, the popularity of Wilders went down hard.

This is a christian blog, how do I end thuis? I am relieved, and thank God.
I was in a church today, a big sign under the organ:
Let us all sing praises to God.
And I thought, God the Lord of heaven and earth! He reigns!

  99. poohpity says:

Yes Viv, I understand. I learned that God’s patience with us is far greater than what I understand patience to be and His love has no limits as mine often times does. When I read about the interactions of Jesus with His disciples and see how kindly and gently He dealt with their shortcomings, I know that is how He deals with me.

  100. jeff1 says:

This is a beautiful poem by Helen Steiner Rice

    Somebody Cares

    Somebody cares and always will,
The world forgets but God loves you still,
You cannot go beyond His Love
No matter what you’re guilty of-
For God forgives until the end,
He is your faithful, loyal friend,
And though you try to hide your face
There is no shelter any place
That can escape His watchful eye,
For on the earth and in the sky
He’s ever present and always there
To take you in His tender care
And bind the wounds and mend the breaks
When all the world around forsakes…
Somebody cares and loves you still
And God is the Someone who always will.

jeff said,”… but I am also getting to trust that God understands and wants me to overcome my weaknesses rather than get angry with me for having them.”

been thinking about this lately….that God wants to overcome my strengths too. He wants all of me and you know i want Him to have all of me. He gave all for me. just thinking and praying. it’s a battle that Christ wins! struggle before Him not with Him.

  102. saled says:

So our blizzard here in Eastern Maine was pretty much a 8 hour event. It arrived here about 4 in the afternoon yesterday, dumped a foot of snow by 10 in the evening when it turned to rain and made life a bit easier. We had an early dismissal from school yesterday and a 2 hour delay this morning, but no entire days lost.

I was hoping someone might be able to suggest where in Paul’s writing Mart was thinking of when he said that Paul reminds us of our ability to create an alternative reality. I just cannot think of verses to go with this.

Also, when Mart writes about learning to help our loved ones with mental illness in ways that seem not quite right to us, I would like some examples of this.

I think there is so much here to discuss in this topic. Hoping my questions inspire some thought.

  103. foreverblessed says:

Saled, my friend whom I have talked about, she has 2 children, the youngest has autism. She gives her oldest special instructions, if the one with autism does not behave quite right, it is not treated as a normal child would be. And the child is often out of line, for me that would be very exhausting. The older one is being instructed, not to react to that behavior.
Also not to aggravate, of agitate the one with autism.
So to prevent the youngest to become very aggressive.

That all does not seem quite right. The normal child cannot have temper tantrums, or things like that, the situation would go out of hand.

  104. foreverblessed says:

But this child with autism did become too much of a strain to the family, and it was placed in a special institute, where professionals now how to handle these children.
The mothers heart was bleeding, she felt so as a failure as a mom. We, in our church, had a prayer team around the family.

( On a side note, we have a very social country, all these special treatments, institutes are payed for by the government. There had been special forces for criminal youngsters, who had spectra training with mentors who would stand alongside, trying to make them see that aggressive behavior is an automatic reaction for them when under pressure etc. I had a good friend who had a job I the youngster prison, and she would tell me about the changes in the teenagers, and how their eyes were opened to their own behavioral.

And then the bank crisis started, and billions of euros went into saving the banks from falling…
And she lost her job. And the child with autism was sent back to home.
( It is going sort of OK with the family)

  105. foreverblessed says:

I have a morning of free time, the sun is shining, getting stronger in warmth, the birds are singing, it is like a good spring day, new life!
I want to encourage you: spring will come!
    Take courage!

  106. SFDBWV says:

Saled your question made me start to look for the verse that said something like “in those days every man would do that which they think is right in their heart.” What I discovered is that there are a multitude of Scripture verses that defines the difference between what people think is right and how it collides with what God has declared.

Hence people make up their own minds about everything especially their views of God and Christianity.

Personally I do not think this topic to be about the actual mentally ill, but rather how people who are just not quite right in their relationships and views with others may be perceived as being ill mentally.

That perhaps the underlying reason for a person’s odd or unacceptable behavior may be a hidden mental illness.

Whereas this may be true it also just might become an excuse for why some people are just the way they are.

If I took such an idea seriously then most likely 9 out of 10 people could be said to be mentally ill.

My heart breaks for any person who has mental illness and their families. Knowing the difficulties a child will have just surviving after their parents are gone is sickening and so very unfair.

Rain would be welcome here, as it is 17 degrees with about 10 inches of snow on the ground, of course with the wind we have had there are plenty of deeper drifts.

There are going to be Robins that will not survive this.

    Steve

  107. foreverblessed says:

Bible verses about how to treat the mentally ill, I agree with what Steve said, the bible does not talk specifically about the mentally ill.

But I have a personal example what the bible says about people who are not quite right. ( I may have told this story before)
We were camping out, my sister and I have both two children of the same age, it was nice camping out together. When my nephew got in his teenage years, he was starting to swear, we call it “vloeken”.
I had such difficulty with that, and at night I was praying to God about it, the next morning I was reading my bible, and this one verse just jumped out of its page and hit me right in the heart:
    “Be patient with everyone”

everyone, means also this one, this difficult nephew!
I believed it was the Holy Spirit instructing me. Instead of correcting the boy not to swear, I was to be patient with him.
He is now in his twenties, and I am beginning to see that he has issues, maybe even a mental illness.

So I am praying for him, believing in the power of God through Jesus Christ, that when the time is right, God may touch his heart and reveal Jesus Christ to him. Just as God did to John Newton, who had been swearing a lot too, but also has written:
    Amazing Grace

  108. foreverblessed says:

There are many verses of Paul, who tells us to be patient:
The bible verse of today in the biblegateway website is:
    Col 3:12
Therefor, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved,
clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and PATIENCE.

v 13 BEAR WITY EACH OTHER and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another, Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Col 3:21 Fathers do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged

(asking too much of perfect behavior for children who are just not quote able and maybe not normal either)

    Another one;
Gal 6:2 Carry each other’s burden, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ
this one is for the mature and stable person in Christ, and also the following

You cannot say to a mentally ill person: Carry your own load,
Maybe the Holy Spirit may at some point to that, or be ablt to comfort that person’s heart and say, I will carry your load for you, give your load to ME

Let us not become weary of doing good Gal 6:9
An exortation to bear the burden of the weak in Christ, or the disabled in mental capacity.

Anyway, it is just as the Holy Spirit can instruct us, but if our mind is set on: Doing right, expecting right behavior, as in contrast of being in the Light, (what the former topic was about) then we do not see the patience, and the longsuffering, and the gentleness the Spirit wants to lead us to.
… for each should carry his own load

  109. foreverblessed says:

    “Be patient with everyone”
    1 Thess 5:14

  110. foreverblessed says:

and at that time, when I thought longer about it, it did not seem quite right to me. Did God overlook the swearing? Did He not want me to correct the boy?
It sank deep into my heart, that God was indeed overlooking it, that God was patient with him, that God understood what was hindering him, and that God was busy drawing the boy to Himself, but in a very tender, and patient way.
The way God handled, and still handless this boy, did not seem quite right, but He showed me the way of the Spirit, that is gentle and patient and showing mercy, overlooking an offence for the time being,.\

For God will set this swearing right, at the proper time.

    another verse about patience:
    1 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness (also the slowness in setting the swearing right) He is patient with you, (and with your sinning neighbor), not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

  111. saled says:

forever, your country sounds so far ahead of the United States in its care for people. How sad that protecting the banks has such a strong impact there as well as here. But I am glad to hear that the child with autism is back in the home. Doctors had recommended that Temple Grandin, who I am always quoting when it comes to autism, be institutionalized when she was just a child, but her mother fought to give her a more normal life and now in her sixties, she has contributed so much to society.

Steve, I don’t think that your 9/10 is far off the mark. In fact I believe that J. Vernon McGee was right when he said that we are all unbalanced, except Jesus. Just some of us more than others. I know that I am unbalanced when it comes to relationships. Maybe my own brain tends toward autism. Things that come naturally to most do not come naturally to me, and I have struggled to find my place for my entire life. I see these tendencies in most of the close relatives of my diagnosed grandson. But we were never diagnosed. Is it better to have a label or not? We struggled with that question. But here in Maine, the label gave my grandson one on one support in his pre school. It is believed that early intervention can often rewire the brain to give the child a more normal life. I am impressed with the quality of the workers who Child Development Services have put into my grandson’s life. In that respect, maybe my state of Maine is ahead of your country, forever. I hate the idea of taking the child out of the home, but it is true that all situations are different, and some are just intolerable for the family.

  112. foreverblessed says:

Thanks Saled, for your explanation, as you say, indeed every situation is different, in my friends case, she was exhausted, she was at the edge staying sane, as she herself is also autistice. Imagine a very autistic mother, with a very very autistic child. They tried a specially trained dog. That helped for a while, till thhe older child aggravated the dog, and the dog had to be taken out of home.
The sad point about my friend is, that as she is autistic, she tends to see things black and white.
She was looking for a new church, and in her search she heard a sermon preached about God’s wrath, and about God ordering the killing of the nations so that Israel could live in the land.
ANd that was to black for her,
SHe decided, this is not the God I want to follow,
ANd then she had a drastic decision:
Throw God out of her life.

ANd that is what she did, and she felt so relieved about it.

I have talked to her about it, prayed about it. I said, you know that you think black an white,
that this is about the Old Testament, that God has a New Testament…
Yes I know, she said, but I am free now.

I prayed and prayed, on evening I went out, and I say the moon, brightly shining, with his face down towards the area where my friend lives. And it was as if the Holy Spirit was saying:
My eyes are always on her.
I will not leave her nor forsake her.

And that was so comforting to me, I like recalling this now, so as to keep my hope for her alive.
(Please pray for that family, if you get a prayer in your heart)

And Chris, I am praying for your mission tonight in the prison, for all these prisoners.
May God bless them, and you!

  113. foreverblessed says:

I saw the moon bright and shining, and the moon was like a bible verse, talking a message of God in my heart:
    And I repeat it:
My eyes are always on her, and her family

    Psalm 33:13-15
From heaven the Lord looks down, and sees all mankind,
from His dwelling place He watches all who live on earth
He who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.

not to destroy them, but to save them
For God has bound all men over to disobedience so
THAT HE MAY HAVE MERCY ON THEM ALL
    Rom 11:32

And now I am going to work outside, in the sunshine,
God bless you all, and may He lead you to His patience with everyone, the difficult ones

  114. bubbles says:

It is very very difficult to be patient with a family memeber who has hearing loss and will not do anything about it. Everyone around said person is blamed for everything, and it is the one who has hearing loss who is at fault. Additionally, things like leaving the stove on, empty coffee pot left on for hours, losing keys, locking oneself out of the house, leaving water faucets running, putting words in others’ mouths that were never thought the begin with…. and then not having anyone else to help. I think most of this problem is due to hearing loss. There was a head injury a few years ago, and they refused to get medical help. I also believe there is ADHD manifestations. The other behaviors are not daily, but consistent enough to be a concern. I have asked for help from another family member, and they will not talk about it. This is all on my back. I have no help.

  115. foreverblessed says:

Dear bubbles, may God be your help in this great ordeal.
I am just reading this now:
” One who breaks open the way
    will go up before them
they will break through the gate and go out.
Their king will pass through before them,
    the Lord at their head”
    Micah 2:13

May God go before you, I pray that over you and for you!

And here is another verse that I pray that God will work out in you:

” But as for me, I am filled with power,
with the Spirit of the Lord,
    and with justice and might”
    Micah 3:8

May God give you His power, and may you give your load to Him, or vice versa.
May this be worked out in you, may you know you have the Eternal Father at your side.
I wish I could be helping you, but I am across the ocean.
Mart says: envision that which is not seen by human eyes.
I try to see with spiritual eyes: if I ask God to send you His Strength, He sends it!
    May you receive it!

  116. Rocky says:

Thank you Mart, It’s been a while since I’ve been here, I’ve not been able to find this site, I don’t know if you moved or if it’s just been hidden from me.

I have to agree with you 100% I call it “OJT” On the Job Training.

As you mentioned “we may need to learn to help them in ways that will not seem [right] to us” When the Lord our God teaches us through the Holy Spirit, It can be very scary, because it will change the way we believe and think about our “religion”.

I’ve experienced this personally, the “rules that I had to abided by as a child in most cases are not always required as an adult.” for example, in school I had to raise my hand to get a drink of water or to visit the boy’s room. But at work, I rarely have to ask anybody, I just go. But I can still remember the first time, I was laughed at, saying you don’t have to ask”.

Similarly, as we grow spiritually, we will be doing and learning things that go way beyond the “elementary truths.” This is what the apostle Paul was talking about when he said in Hebrews 5:12-14 (NIV)

“12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”

The elementary truths are very important, but there’s so much more to learn.

  117. poohpity says:

saled, I think the teaching that Mart was talking about from Paul is found in 2 Cor 10:13 BSB “We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they show their ignorance.” Their own reality is based on their own thinking.

Even children with special needs also need to know correction because if they are left to their own and people makes excuses for them they will not be able to make it society. Their parents may not be around all their life and they will have to at one point function around others. Better to have that correction from someone who loves them than to be ostracized in life. Now a days there are so many programs to teach parents how to bring up children with differing abilities.

Even soldiers who come back from war with TBI have to learn to function around people so they will not cause harm to themselves or others and can function within our society without excuses or blame.

That is actually what God does with us teaches us to function within a society without causing harm to ourselves and those around us because He seems to realize that human beings ALL have special needs in some form or another. God teaches us to be in a relationship with Him and with the help of the Holy Spirit that relationship will spill out towards others.

  118. poohpity says:

ooops that was 2 Cor 10:12 NLT not 13

  119. poohpity says:

The BSB refers to the Berean Study Bible which is not one of the translations that this cite uses.

  120. poohpity says:

God, from my understanding, deals with each individual in a different way but does not go against His basic foundation of teaching but seems to realize we are each unique and it may take something that is a right way for one to learn may be different for another but the basic principles and character of God never changes just the manner of how He gets His message to us.

  121. cbrown says:

Good morning all(10:44 AM here).Thank you Forever for your prayers.Tonight we are going to open with prayer and then sing “Victory in Jesus”,Raquis has volunteered to teach from one of the “the Daily Bread” devotions in the 1st 30 minutes. Last week it was pointed out by Fred the power of the verses, the sword of the Spirit in each devotional. In the last 30 minutes we are going to study John 5:18-47. Love in Christ

  122. street says:

thank you forever. i was blessed and encourage by what you wrote because i do not always speak correctly or think correctly. this hope in me is secure in Christ Jesus!!!
i think of the truth,”reality” and the false “reality” we make up as we go through life. no more! the true reality in Christ Jesus will lead us into His very presents. His blood will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
the truth of His Word, the truth of His Spirit, and the Grace of God makes us free in deed. and He shall Reign Forever and ever. till then we shall walk by faith that He has entrusted to us.

  123. SFDBWV says:

Have not been able to get back on BTA since my first comment pre-dawn this morning (Bad Gateway).

I cleared up the back of snow and cleaned things up with the plow on the roadways. Found one dead Robin and see another just a bit ago that isn’t likely to make it.

Foreverblessed yes indeed how well I remember hearing many times not to pray for patience because God will give you plenty of reason in how to learn it.

My own life with my very beloved son Matthew has taught me patience at a level I never knew possible and the need to learn more continues to evidence itself every day all day long.

Hello Rocky, there a great many people absent from BTA since you were here before. You just have to type in BTA on the home page for Our Daily Bread to find BTA and sometimes even then gives you trouble.

I do hope you keep tuned in as we need all the people we can get to add to the conversations.

    19 degrees, still snowing.

  124. joycemb says:

Paul’s alternative reality I think mart is talking about is found in I Corinthians 13. When applied to any circumstance in life it affects how we think of ourselves and others in this present world.

  125. SFDBWV says:

Ok, as I have already stated in my opinion the truly mentally ill are not responsible to God for their actions. Like little babies they are innocent in God’s eyes and covered by the Grace of God through Jesus of Nazareth.

However what about those of us who are not suffering from a long list of mental disorders?

Here in the USA we do a very poor job of taking care of the mentally ill, the disabled and old people.

Too often they are simply “put away” so as not to make the rest of the people feel bad or responsible or be forced to deal with them.

Need I remind you of the people in nursing homes who drowned in their beds in New Orleans during the hurricane Katrina?

Or are found to be mistreated in institutions only after family members secretly install hidden cameras to catch the guilty?

Sure there are some people who are dedicated care givers, but I assure you they are in the minority.

I brought my son home after doctors simply put a feeding tube in him and told his mother to find a nursing home for him.

I applaud every person who brings their loved one home to take care of them.

Does the government help after you get them home? No!

Do not believe the lie that there are agencies out there that can help care givers. There are agencies out there that can get paid by the government to look like they can help, but don’t believe it.

Your loved one requires 24 hour help, the help that is available is for maybe 8 hours a day and often leads to theft of property or mistreatment of your loved one.

Best to keep such people out of your house and out of your life.

Yes there are a lot of “stinkers” and people who are “not quite right” that has nothing to do with mental illness.

Seen another Robin feasting on seed on my rock a little bit ago, more snow tonight and tomorrow, and then maybe a little break with rain in the forecast.

    Steve

  126. joycemb says:

Minnesota has very good services in place for aliens, disabled, homeless, elderly etc. but all states are not the same.

I agree Steve caring for someone that is disabled within the family is best; not easy but Matt is sure blessed to have you, and you him. That alternate reality in a sometimes uncaring world.

  127. poohpity says:

Some areas are so remote that many of the services that populated areas have are not available but we can not base the whole country’s services on a small tiny remote area. Here we have respite care for the care givers so they can have time off as well as recreational centers so that those with special needs can go meet and interact with others. There are also places that teach independence life skills so when their caregivers pass away they will have been taught how to care for themselves with minimal help or group homes for more specialized care. There is all kinds of help out there but sometimes we have to go to another area sort of like stepping out the safety of what we know to that scary thing of going into the unknown.

  128. joycemb says:

Although Pooh I’m sure you can agree that Gods reality and ways are usually far different than the present reality we live in, no matter how good the options available. My best friend is highly co-dependent and an enabler for her alcoholic, TBI son, yet through the years I’ve marveled at how God gets done what He wants done in spite of her opposition. She is the first to admit her inability to overcome her problems yet is a woman after Gods own heart if I ever saw one and God has taught me a lot about His ways; which are far different than our limited thinking of what’s right and wrong. Years of praying for her son have yielded fruit as he finally is learning to trust God and reminds his mother to pray about everything! It’s truly amazing! The cost for her has been great with cleaning after him, fixing cars, taking to appointments, spending hours and hours fighting doctors and hospitals to not give up on him and just label him alcoholic and irredeemable. There is so much power available to the humble and persistent heart. I’m witnessing those fruits now after years of listening, helping with meals, support, shopping, cleaning etc. I am so proud of my friend for sticking through all the tough years with him and thankful she is seeing the blessings of obedience finally at the age of 70.

  129. poohpity says:

I believe that no matter what time we find ourselves in God’s reality is always higher than ours. As Mart was teaching it is helpful to be aware of how our own reality can color how we read, think, perceive, see and act. Another author who wrote the forward to the book “Lies We Believe About God” C. Baxter Kruger PhD says, “Yet the fact is, that we all bring our family prejudices, our personal history, our habits of thought into our reading of scripture. Just as we cannot hear our own accents, we can not readily see our own assumptions–assumptions that shape what we see and how we see it.”

  130. poohpity says:

Joyce, I see the difference in families that continue like your friend did with her son and those who pull back and let a substance abuser suffer consequences of their behavior. I know because my parents helped me so much until the time came when I had 2 babies, homeless that they said they would not help me any longer so the only thing I could do was change the direction I was going. I brought financial ruin, relational ruin and so much more until for their own safe keeping and good they let go. They loved me enough to not help any longer because their help was only enabling me to continue to stay like I was. The best thing they did was say NO.

  131. joycemb says:

It takes a firm “No” to get some to see the error of their ways. Thankful your parents gave you to God to deal with pooh.

  132. street says:

speaking of no. been thinking about God telling moses no and the grace he received.

  133. poohpity says:

Joyce, I don’t think my parents or God considered me something they had to deal with. They have heart.

  134. joycemb says:

“No” just doesn’t seem quite right at times, does it. Grace is mysterious and lovely though. Not quite right….

  135. joycemb says:

Pooh “deal with” is about behavior not feelings.

  136. street says:

thinking about how grace and truth,Jesus, dealt with the rich man who walked away. he gave him grace to return. then i think of the woman caught and judged with the sentence of death over her. how He intervened with grace and truth. go and sin no more. did she sin more? probably … , but she knew where to turn to and find grace mercy and help in time of need. i can see how this could become a daily event till you decide not to leave His side and remain in His present when you come in and go out.

  137. joycemb says:

    They have heart.

I’m sorry I offended you pooh. Was not my intention.

  138. joycemb says:

Yes when God deals with us its with grace, mercy and truth!

  139. foreverblessed says:

Bubbles, I want to rewrite: may you receive it-
That could sound like, if you don’t receive it, it’s your own fault, and I did not want to give that message to you!
I myself do find it very hard when I am dealing with a difficult issue to lay it at the feet of Jesus, and turning around not taking up the load again and walk away with it!

You seem to be under a great strain, and to me your friend sounds like she/he has TBI, not just the hearing faure.
I looked that up: Traumatic Brain Injury.
I am happy that there are States who take very well care of those who have trouble, I hope you live in such a State, maybe you could get some help, based on the TBI, if it is diagnosed as such

I want change it into: may God be with you, may He strengthen you, may He send angels to assist you.

  140. foreverblessed says:

How did it go Chris? I find it so nice that you let the inmates prepare for the Bible studies! Imagine how God is with them when they sit behind their desk/ table, looking up the Bible passage.
I looked it up, John 5:16-47.
A lot to talk about, especially for inmates!
22 moreover, the Father judges no-one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, THAT All MAY HONOR THE SON just as they honor the Father.

May God be with them, may He put His Name on them: They are Mine/ will be Mine

    That is from Number 6:24-27
I take that literal, I put God’s Name on those I pray for. I literally believe we are priests before God.
And since I do that, my life has become so much more interesting, I am at home, quiet, and yet busy with such great spiritual work, God’s Kingdom, the saving of souls!

I pray that we pray more together for those whom God puts on our minds to be prayed for!
But first we must come to Rest at the feet of Jesus Christ.

  141. foreverblessed says:

Wouldn’t it be great for an inmate to read:
    The Father judges no-one!

Today in the 40 day preparation the Bible verse Hebrews 9:14, a very good one for a person, sitting in prison, who is haunted by the memory of some horrible things they have done:

” How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

( Of course we all were in a fallen state, we all failed, but having killed someone’s child, and thinking that over and over, the pain you have inflicted on the parents, oh, that must be so hard, and your conscience is accusing you all of the time.
BUT, in Christ our conscience can be made clean!)

  142. saled says:

Thank you foreverblessed for the story of your moonlight prayer for you friend. Beautiful. I pray for your friend along with you. And thank you for sharing those verses of hope from Psalms and Romans.

Thank you pooh and Joyce for your suggestions as to which of Paul’s writing Mart was referring to. 2 Cor. 10:12 makes a lot of sense. Maybe it is saying don’t judge those who seem not quite right because maybe it is your culture, peer group, or neurological wiring that makes you appear to be right.

And Rocky, thanks for your story of how the rules differ from school to workplace. Rules and the expectations of people vary so much. I have always struggled with them. I grew up in a home where we placed the forks on the right side of the plate because we were right handed. I adapted to proper place settings, but it still seems very silly to me. So much more I want to write. Hoping to get back here this weekend.

  143. jeff1 says:

Forever, my failure is just as difficult to live with as that of someone who has committed murder.

You seem to think there is a difference but I have hatred in my heart for people I do not know because the people I do know are the victims of them.

You think that makes it any easier for me to know that God forgives me but I cannot forgive others, well it does not, it makes it just as difficult to know that I can have hatred in my heart because it is an equal sin to murder in God’s eyes.

Do not presume that what you see as the greater sin has the greater consequence.

Sin destroys us all because the sin of one can in effect affect the sin of another.

I see people today who do not know who murdered their loved ones, I call them the walking dead because they have given up on ever finding the bodies in some cases.

There is no closure for them so their is no end to their pain.

I cannot imagine what life is like for them and I can tell you that my hatred of their offenders keeps me from God just as much as a person who has committed murder does, to my way of thinking.

God have mercy on us all.

  144. bubbles says:

forever, thank you. I never took offense, and I have no idea what you were referring to. This one will never see a doctor… I am frustrated more than anything..Not great stress. Yesterday morning was stressful, but others have much much more than I could imagine. I cannot complain. I wish the other member would help, but they don’t care and will never do anything to help me. I had what I feel is good news; I shared it with this person, and they ignored me. NO response at all. This one does not care.

  145. poohpity says:

I think one of the biggest things God deals with us about is our own attitude or perception of not only ourselves but other people and circumstances in relation to Him.

  146. poohpity says:

I can look at someone else and think they are not quite right but God seems to say, “who do you think you are to think that?”.

  147. joycemb says:

Happy St. Patrick’s day everyone! For a funny look at St Patrick on the trinity find on YouTube “St. Patrick’s Bad Analogies”.

Have a great day everyone and remember, When Irish Eyes Are Smiling The Whole World Smiles At You!

  148. cbrown says:

Good morning all! A lot happened last night. While I was waiting for the inmates to be shacked and brought out of their cells I had a chance to talk to two of the guards. One young guard is engaged and I encouraged him to find a church. The other guard asked if we were going to be singing. He then said you can sing any song except “The Old Rugged Cross”,that was his grandmother’s favorite.I told him one of my grandmothers favorites was “In the Garden”.He said that was one of his other grandmothers favorites.I offered him a ‘Daily Bread” and he refused it. He stated that he did not want anything to do with religion because that was just a bunch of denominations trying to prove they were right.

By now they had brought the inmates to the the room we have our study. Forever, it is about 8ft by 15ft with benches lining the walls. One side is glass so that the guards can view from outside. We knelt and prayed and then sang “Victory in Jesus”.

Raquis, chose his birth date which was that week as the devotional for the study and it was a blessing.

Next we discussed John 5:18-47. There is so much in those
verses we will continue with them next week.

As I was leaving I offered the older guard my “Daily Bread” again. He said he did not have any use for it. The younger guard asked if he could have it and I gave it to him.The first guard said he was not interested in religion and I told him “The Daily Bread” is a good tool to establish a relationship with God.I told him I would bring him another one and he said Ok. Praise God!

  149. SFDBWV says:

Good job Chris, persistence is always a better tool than insistence.

    Steve

  150. poohpity says:

Chris, you could have said to the older guard that even Christ Himself was not interested in religion as are most followers of Jesus but He was however interested in a relationship.

  151. joycemb says:

Thanking God for putting you in that dark place Chris! Bringing light is so good! May God bless you and be glorified through you and your students.

  152. cbrown says:

Thanks for the comments. Pooh, in this situation I am going to pray and wait on God.

  153. poohpity says:

    Romans 10:14-15 NLT

  154. poohpity says:

How do we know that when someone says something to us that it was not God who sent them??

  155. jeff1 says:

Joyce, had a look at you tube and it is so typical of our humour. Thanks for sharing.

My mother used to love the postcards that the Irish mum sent to her son.

Saying as its St Patrick’s day I will share part of one in the hope you enjoy.

Just a few words to let you know I’m still alive.
I’m writing this letter slowly because I know you can’t read fast. We are all doing very well.

You won’t recognise the house when you get home – we have moved. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles from your home, so we’ve moved. I won’t be able to send you the address because the last Irish family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so that they won’t have to change their address.

This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I’m not sure if it works so well though: last week I put a load in and pulled the chain and haven’t seen them since.

Your father’s got a really good job now. He’s got 500 men under him. He’s cutting the grass at the cemetery.

Your sister Mary had a baby this morning but I haven’t found out if it’s a boy or a girl, so I don’t know whether you are an auntie or an uncle.

Your uncle Tom is still in the army. He’s only been there a short while and they’ve already made him a court martial!

Your uncle Patrick drowned last week in a vat of whiskey in the Dublin Brewery. Some of his workmates tried to save him but he fought them off bravely. They cremated him and it took three days to put out the fire.

    Your loving Mum

P.S.I was going to send you some money but I had already sealed the envelope.

  156. joycemb says:

Thank you Viv that’s hilarious! Love Irish humor as its typical of how I think (being over 1/4 Irish myself) and find my humor is usually met with blank stares living in a mostly Scandinavian culture and even offensive as i have a way of offending even with my writing here. God bless you my dear Irish cousin!

  157. poohpity says:

Chris, I have to ask for your forgiveness for offering advise that was not asked for. I am sorry. Deb

Viv that was so funny. Thank you for the laugh. I am going to copy and post it on facebook

  158. jeff1 says:

Yes, Joyce, it can be rather baffling to those who don’t understand it, glad you did enjoy, and God bless you too!

  159. jeff1 says:

I am very pleased you enjoyed it Pooh and hope your friends on facebook do too. God bless you on this St Patrick’s day.

God bless all of you on this St Patrick’s day.

  160. cbrown says:

Pooh, thanks. God is working. My Pastor once said be careful in a construction area.

  161. street says:

    not quite right
thinking the custom of Jesus and paul going to the synagogue to teach and preach. thinking the lost where there too, a starting place. we know the rich and learned threw them out and eventually killed them. the gentiles responded and some of the jews! just thinking

starting in a congregation because they would have an idea of what you are talking about. they would know the law and the prophets, the only problem is the ones who do not believe the law and the prophets.

  162. cbrown says:

Foreverblessed, I misread your comment at 4:33AM, these inmates are in solitary confinement unless they are brought out in shackles for the Bible study. Their cell is approximately 7ftx12ft and includes a cot, foot locker, toilet and small sink.Twice a week they are brought out individually for a shower. As I write this I have been listening to Joni Eareckson Tada sing “It Is Well With My Soul” and the ones in the Bible study claim that truth. They study their Bible each day in that cell and claim God as their salvation. The miracles we see in that prison.

  163. street says:

Once again, could this be why our Savior offered us his Spirit, and not just his words?

God gave us everything including Himself….learning to breath.

i like the comment be careful in construction areas. it’s wonderful when there is harmony peace and joy.

i can see why we are to slow down in construction areas.

  164. poohpity says:

Yes street, we are all under construction, sometimes things being torn down and other times things being built up. CAUTION GOD AT WORK!! That would be a sign we all need to wear.

  165. foreverblessed says:

God gave us His Spirit, not just His Words.
This is the time, the 40 days before Easter, and we meditate on what Jesus did for us at the Cross:
When we look up in faith at the Cross,
    His Spirit flows through us
and cleanses us bit by bit
layer for layer, likey an union that is peeled
    His Spirit cleaning us

    Hebrews 9:14
    Also cleansing our conscience

I pray for you Jeff, that you look up in faith at the Cross, and that your conscience may be purified.
That your conscience is not haunting you any longer, you have been forgiven in Christ, you are a new person, whole in Christ!

You might say, what is tbat, His Spirit flowing through us, and purifying us?
There is a literal shadow of that prices in the Old Testament:
The Israelites, being bitten by a snake, who were die-ing, when they looked up at the golden snake on the pole, they were healed physically!
    Yes!
That is our God, who gives us not only His Words, but His Spirit with it, when we look up in faith!

You might also say: isn’t that just too easy, no works on our part, well, you could view the looking up in faith as a ” work”. If we do not look up in faith we start to put a set of rules in front of us, we start the moral card!
Then we might look clean on the outside, but our inner parts have not been cleansed by they Cross.

Paul was just preaching the Cross:
    The big Exchange!
Give all that hinders you to the Cross, your sins, your depression, your conscience, etc
And receive His Spirit, cleansing you, His love, peace …
    Gal 5:22-23

  166. foreverblessed says:

Chris, that is a poor little room they are locked into!
No chair to sit on! No desk to write on!
How do they make notes? Do they get back problems for not sitting right?

And I will pray for that older guard too! Just not the inmates. As I get it from you, some must be real and strong christians!
    May God bless them!

  167. foreverblessed says:

And may God bless all the ones that will come to faith through their testimony!

  168. joycemb says:

Depression doesn’t always hinder us though, oftentimes a chemical imbalance is something we have to embrace, like any other debilitating disease, and trust God is still involved with us in ways we cannot know or understand as I know Viv is doing daily. God doesn’t always heal but He’s always there, I know this well with my own struggles. I have learned to trust and praise God anyway. He is soooo good.

  169. bubbles says:

And the medication they have for depression is worse than the depression itself.

  170. joycemb says:

I have found a good medication for my depression/anxiety. When I go off I’m 10 times worse. Praise God for helping us all in various ways.

  171. jeff1 says:

It is true that some do not do well on medication but I have psychotic episodes and panic attacks so I have to take my medicine.

Yes, there are side effects but the alternative is worse and I have learned to live with the side effects.

When I look at people who has physical disabilities I cannot imagine how they cope but they do and when we believe God is with us it gives us the strength to go on.

I lament, it is my way of coping, I do not take it for granted that God will heal me, I can take it for granted that He has forgiven me my sins but God has not promised a suffering free life for believers but that there will be trials and tribulations.

    God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus;
    He came to love, heal and forgive;
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Saviour lives!

    Chorus:
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives, all fear is gone,
Because I know, He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
    Just because He lives!

How sweet to hold a new-born baby,
    And feel the pride and joy he brings;
But greater still the calm assurance:
This child can face uncertain days because He lives!

    Chorus:
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
    Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know, He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
    Just because He lives!

And then one day I’ll cross the river,
    I’ll fight life’s final war with pain;
And then as death, gives way to victory,
I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives!

    Chorus:
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
    Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know, he holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
    Just because He lives!

  172. poohpity says:

But Jesus’s loving sacrifice for us was the very content of his disagreement; it was his very statement that we are sinners in need of a savior. God cut the link between disagreement and devaluing by making his communication of truth one and the same as his communication of love.

Not “Truth is greater than love.” Not “Love is greater than truth.” “God is love” (1 John 4:8), and God is truth (John 14:6). And therefore, love is truth.

Only in Jesus does truth equal love, and therefore only Jesus can get us out of the cultural ultimatum we are stuck in: fight or flee. Every other worldview makes a choice between love and truth. Jesus refused to, because in him, and only in him, love and truth are one and the same.

So the next time we have a choice between love and truth, let’s refuse to choose. Instead, let’s remember when the Truth—Jesus himself—was stretched. Let’s remember when the Truth was twisted and bent, when the Truth was naked. Let’s remember when the Truth hurt, and when the Truth was buried—and ultimately triumphed.

Let us remember which wooden cross we are trusting in. And let us remember that love that is not truth is not love, and truth that is not love is not truth.

    been thinking
forever said,”This is the time, the 40 days before Easter, and we meditate on what Jesus did for us at the Cross:”

yes this is good to think about and a wonderful truth that God has provided a redeemer! it’s after the cross it really becomes even more amazing! mart speak of it as giving us His Spirit! not only His Word made flesh, but His Spirit too!
Emanuel! God with us! i will never be the same again. you must be born again. the one who comes to Jesus and thirst will be given living water, they will drink with out cost and never thirst again. a disciple is told to count the cost before they become one. the one who is born again will walk with God as child of God forever.

Viv thank you for the song—i remember how comforting it was to me back in the 80’s, and good to remember this Lenten season. God bless you and keep you, may He make his face shine upon you and give you peace. Through Jesus Christ our LORD, Amen

  175. jeff1 says:

Thank you, Joyce, songs are such a gift, when no one else can give me peace of mind, gospel songs do, I get peace from God when I listen to them.

God can seem so complex and distant but when listening to songs its like he is talking to me personally and it renews my hope and strength.

It’s also good to share as it makes you feel less isolated in your difficulties as you begin to realize that all have struggles of one kind or another.

  176. joycemb says:

Yes I agree on both points Viv

    Isaiah 42:3

    Pulpit Commentary
Verse 3. – A bruised reed shall he not break. Egypt was compared to a “bruised reed” by Sennacherib (Isaiah 36:6), as being untrustworthy and destitute of physical strength; but here the image represents the weak and depressed in spirit, the lowly and dejected. Christ would deal tenderly with such, not violently. Smoking flax shall he not quench; rather, the wick which burns dimly (margin) he shall not quench. Where the flame of devotion burns at all, however feebly and dimly, Messiah will take care not to quench it. Rather he will tend it, and trim it, and give it fresh oil, and cause it to burn more brightly.

  178. joycemb says:

“He shall bring forth judgment unto truth.”
But with all this tenderness, this “economy,” this allowance for the shortcomings and weaknesses of individuals, he will be uncompromising in his assertion of absolute justice and absolute truth. He will sanction nothing short of the very highest standard of moral purity and excellence. (For an instance of the combination of extreme tenderness with unswerving maintenance of an absolute standard, see John 8:8-11.)
