The Curse

This Spring, a Robin built her nest in this wreath on our front door. I watched as she wove the nest, mudded it, and then made it into a soft bed for her family to be.

Over the next few days I got pictures of three blue eggs and then babies barely able to lift their heads. But four days later I found the nest empty. In the Hawthorne tree a few feet overhead the mother bird noisily tried to distract me.

Since the nest seemed undisturbed, and seeing no evidence on the ground, the only thing I could come up with is that she was robbed either by a bluejay, or by one of our own.

Today, while thinking again about what might have happened I remembered another loss that used to confuse and trouble me. As the Lord God rewrote the broken Law for his idolatrous family, he described himself as a, “Compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.

“Yet”… on the heels of the promise of such blessing… a curse. “Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation” (Exodus 34:6-7)

Because words and passages of Scripture can be interpreted in different ways, Bible translations may not always do justice to the heart of the God who “punishes” the children and their children for the sin of the parents.” The Hebrew word translated “punish” by the NIV in Exodus 34:7 is more commonly rendered “visit” or “lay”. The implication seems to be that a gracious God who is full of mercy and compassion, nevertheless, wants us to know that a world infected by distrust and human error is different than the paradise of trust that has been lost.

The rest of the Scriptures show that even this natural law of sowing and reaping is broken. While we sometimes suffer for our own sin— that’s not always the case. Job and Jesus didn’t. Yet because the infection leaves no one and nothing untouched, all creation groans with the spirit of our humanity (Rom 8:22-23) and with the Spirit of our God (Rom 8:26).

So, as we sing in wonder— and groan under the curse  (Gen 3:16-24), the question lingers: Would it have been more merciful, compassionate, and gracious of our God to cover our nakedness— without evidence of what happened to us, to our understanding of Him, and even to all nature— in the curse of a Paradise Lost?

Note: My apologies for the questions raised by the earlier version of this last paragraph. I hope the question now makes more sense…

It seems whether we are under the curse of the sins we have done or that have been done to us, Jesus came to set the captives free. The enemy would love for us to remain captives to guilt and shame or anger and hatred but Jesus wants us to be free and each day given a new chance to experience renewed mercy, forgiveness and grace (Lamentations 3:22-23). The battle has been won and the chains removed.(Luke 3:18-19 NLT)

Good day Mart, I too have had birds build nests in our wreaths as well as all over our yard in amazing and various places.

There are more than one species of nest robbers as I will tell a short story of one occasion.

It was up at my parent’s house above mine that dad watched a pair of robins build a nest in a small sapling in their front yard. One morning the robins were making a very noisy furor when dad seen that there was a snake at the nest attempting to swallow a small chick.

He quickly killed the snake and removed the chick from its mouth and returned it to the nest.

The adult robins sat above the nest not returning the remainder of the day to the nest, but not totally abandoning it either.

The next morning the nest was empty of the chicks and the robins were gone. With no evidence of the chicks dead or thrown out of the nest…A mystery to this day as what happened to the chicks and their parents.

I have, to my displeasure, watched cowbirds follow robins around the yard seeking out their nests to kick out the eggs and lay their own.

One of those pearls of literature came from “Killer Angels” as the old Union Sargent said to his Colonel “there is not a single thing in all of nature that is equal or has an equal chance.”

There is grave injustice everywhere, in nature and certainly in the world of men.

It is with the utmost effort of Christian’s not to seek justice when it cries out so loud to be avenged. The greatest of struggles as to settle into peace by giving revenge or reckoning over to God. Something just not easily done.

Yes Mart we all groan under the curse even while we rejoice at our own salvation we cannot ignore all the ugly in this broken world and so pray for the peace of Jerusalem and the return of Jesus to come quickly. Knowing all of the death and destruction that is in play for that to happen.

    the curse
thinking the curse is living apart from God.
there is a hardening, deception, blindness, bondage, and death involved. yes we live in a wilderness of injustice evil sin and short comings? but, i ask you where is hope? is it not in God? the very One the world tries to deny and live apart from? God said My grace is sufficient. God’s grace leads to God Himself, not to be missed, set aside, or denied. thanks and praise are the things most missed by the human heart.

  5. jeff1 says:

    WHEN I MUST LEAVE YOU

    When I must leave you
    for a little while,
    Please do not grieve
    and shed wild tears
    And hug your sorrow
    to you through the years,
    But start out bravely
    with a gallant smile;
    And for my sake
    and in my name
    Live on and do
    all things the same,
    Feed not your loneliness
    on empty days,
    But fill each waking hour
    in useful ways,
    Reach out your hand
    in comfort and in cheer
And I in turn will comfort you
    and hold you near;
    And never, never
    be afraid to die,
    For I am waiting
    for you in the sky!

  6. poohpity says:

    Later after the Exodus teaching one finds;

    Numbers 15:31
Because he has despised the word of the LORD and has broken His commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; his guilt will be on him.'”

    Deuteronomy 24:16
“Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin.

    Ezekiel 18:20
20″The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.

It would seem that we have to see what lies within each of us to know that the curse was broken and paid for on Calvary.

  7. jeff1 says:

    Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there may be any hurtful way in me. And lead me in the everlasting way….

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now I’m found,
Was blind, but now I see.

    ’twas Grace that taught,
    my heart to fear.
    And Grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear,
    the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
    I have already come.
’tis Grace that brought me safe thus far,
and Grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
    His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
    as long as life endures.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
    bright shining as the sun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise,
    then when we first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind, but now… I see.

  9. SFDBWV says:

Looking at the “curse” of “generational punishment” whereas it seems unfair and unlike a forgiving gracious God; I have come to see and understand it from living long enough and knowing enough about generations of people.

It is the stain and collateral damage of sin as well as the simple genetics of personality that are at play here.

The important thing to understand is that each person of each generation has the opportunity to break the “curse” by deliverance through the acceptance of Jesus into their hearts and lives.

Alcoholism for instance is a genetic trait that if not conquered will filter down from generation to generation. The devastation of such a sickness has a far reaching effect on children and their future children and manifested in many different ways.

Pornography another illness that can and will damage the family and children of the offender.

I think I can take any “sin” and see how it effects not just the person, but his family and is passed down to his children by both breeding and example.

That old saw remains true, “the apple don’t fall far from the tree”.

But through the acceptance of Jesus of Nazareth as Lord we can be reborn and made new. The curse broken and free of “generational sin” and the consequences (punishment) of it.

30 degrees this morning. We had a mixture of drizzle and snow yesterday with snow on the ground only a few miles from us in the Canaan Valley high country.

    Steve

  10. poohpity says:

It seems that some illnesses and addictions come from sin in a person’s life but may not be in and of themselves sin. They can cloud the source of the real problem which is trying to fill a hole that only God can satisfy. The more socially acceptable addictions of anger, hate, prejudices and rage seem more destructive to future generations because they are passed off as a person having every right to do them. The consequences of those are people just do not want to be around them.

I think that God wanted us to see and understand the evidence of what happens to us because only then can we ask for help in those areas and if we can not see then the Holy Spirit knows how and what we need prayer for.

  11. poohpity says:

Normally it is the separation from God in our lives.

  12. poohpity says:

Which seems to be a curse for anyone but one that can be easily remedied by just coming to believe in a kind, compassionate God.

  13. jeff1 says:

There is too many assumptions made as to why a person has an addiction or illness and it often causes more pain for the person suffering.

Thankfully today in this Country there is a good welfare system in place to look after those who cannot look after themselves and as a result I have seen many an alcoholic reformed so God is always at work whether we see Him or not.

  15. saled says:

We have a family of phoebes nesting under our eaves at the moment, but this post reminded me of the family of robins that nested under the seat of our upside down canoe when my own children were young. We watched them be carefully cared for and grow to fledgling age, but none of them actually survived leaving the nest. It seems just too cruel, but that is the way of nature.

It was Jesus who said that not a sparrow would fall on the ground without the Father. And there is the song that says “His eye is on the sparrow, so I know he watches me.” He is God, and all creation is His. And I believe that the redemption of creation will right all these wrongs.

As an employee of the public school system, Mart’s story of the robins makes me think of children born into situations that are just so wrong. And public school is our feeble attempt to right these wrongs.

I don’t understand the question Mart asks in his closing paragraph. Can someone help?

  16. joycemb says:

Saled I’ve read it over and over in various ways and can’t understand what Mart is saying. Maybe if M A R T reads the thread soon he will help us out.

  17. SFDBWV says:

Saled of our small group here I am sure no one clearly understood the last paragraph Mart wrote as I too read it over several times before coming to my own conclusion.

Looking backward at it we all see and experience the cold cruel world we live in, we groan under the curse of a broken world and lost paradise.

Yet we sing praises to God in hope of a better future for all of us as well as the natural things around us.

Then comes the question; should God have not told us of the events in the Garden that led to a broken existence for us all, should He have just covered our sin by His own sacrifice without the full story and then left us to live in a broken world wondering why.

That is my take on the comment, if wrong Mart can explain it clearer or in his own words and I will adjust.

26 degrees this morning under a nearly full moon.

    Steve

  18. SFDBWV says:

I have often shared with you all that I often over think some questions and complicate things rather than gain a clear understanding of the matter.

The creation story has also led me on such a maze in order to try and gain minute details that probably have no effect on the big picture, just loose ends of my own curiosity.

I also have often shared that for me this is of itself a curse.

With the fall of Adam and Eve, death entered the world of man. But was death already in creation? God planted a garden in Eden, in order to plant a garden you have to have soil and soil is the decomposed material of plants. I agree that the plant itself does not have to die, rather parts of it does as it continues to grow and live and sheds the dead material from it.

But parts of it did have to die.

God created all the living things in all of the earth with the ability to procreate, but what would happen if all of the creatures in the world continued to procreate without death? The world would soon overpopulate at a very quick rate.

Then there is the fact that everything with the exception of plankton and algae and some bacteria need to eat other living things in order to live, so something has to be eaten. Its life then guaranteeing the life of something else.

Death it would seem has a necessary place in this physical existence while we are to believe that it does not in the spiritual one.

Jesus became the first of the resurrected body, the eternal physical body, a combination of both physical and spiritual. Yet we read He ate fish with His friends, so food remains on the menu of life.

Where there is food something has to give up its life. I would guess with the exception of “manna”, pure life force substance from God.

Some questions I suppose are best left to God to answer and for us to just trust He knows what it is He is doing. As sometimes we may not like the answers.

    Steve

  19. jeff1 says:

I agree with those sentiments Steve because when I think of how many times I disagreed with my earthly dad to find eventually that he was always right it seems the wise thing to trust my heavenly Father who knows all things and does all things for my/our good.

God has a plan and though I may not understand how it plays out, I am part of it; and how blessed I am to understand that much when so many do not even trust that there is a God or understand God’s inclusion of them.

As the song goes ‘I have come too far to look back again’ so its onwards and upwards with Jesus going on before.

  20. Mart DeHaan says:

Whoops. Sorry, Saled, Joycemb, Steve, and all. Just caught your question about the earlier version of my last paragraph. No wonder, I was the only one who had a clue what I was trying to say. I hope the rewording of the paragraph above helps. If not, let me know and I’ll try again :-)…

  21. joycemb says:

Lol here! Mart you are stretching my mind beyond its elderly capabilities today! My simple response is if there had been no need to cover our nakedness how would we have known?Ahhh, maybe I did answer your question? Or not… Have a blessed day all!!!

  22. Mart DeHaan says:

joycemb, yeh, you’re right. Guess, I was only thinking that, at that point, the clothes were probably welcome, while the rest of the consequences weren’t :-)…

  23. poohpity says:

How can one lose something they did not know they had in the first place? If we did not know the kind of relationship that God had intended then we would not miss it when it was gone. If it were not for the curse brought on by disobedience then there would have been no need for the covering with the skin of animals. It is similar one can not break a law if there were no laws then we would have no need for forgiveness.

  24. poohpity says:

Steve, if the soil was not the best at creation full of nutrients which over time has lost what was once there by over use then compost was not needed. God seemed to have given sustenance to maintain what was about to be created. Like everything was in place, all needs supplied before the creation of those that would need them to live. Carefully, orderly and purposefully made to sustain the new life that would follow.

  25. joycemb says:

Oh Mart I see what you are getting at:-). Yes the temporal covering would and still is welcome but the eternal, yes, did they understand what God was telling them when He said the woman’s offspring would bruise the heal of the serpent, after he explained the consequences of their disobedience? The blessing was there but not there-Gods Grace, mercy and goodness. Still now but not yet.

  26. joycemb says:

Not yet as we still live among the cursed and suffer their pain along with ours.

  27. jeff1 says:

God knows us better than we know ourselves because I never know how I will behave until I am in the circumstance.

It is what God teaches me when bringing me through that is important because He has a good purpose for me and knows where He is leading me.

I was talking to my friend the other day and she told me of a Christian woman who was very judgemental.

My friend discovered that this woman’s grandson was homosexual and because she was upset with this woman’s constant judgemental attitude she mentioned it to her.

She said that this woman reacted very differently when it came to her own door.

God knows we can have double standards and will bring us to our knees when needed.

He never told us to judge others and yet we do it like it is our right to do so.

Wrong beliefs are what separate us from God because our behaviour will never be acceptable to God while we hold on to judgemental ways.

People always want to know is God on my side when the question should be am I on God’s side and that just shows how ignorant we can be about God.

  28. poohpity says:

God’s grace, mercy and goodness was not in the garden?

  29. poohpity says:

I see His grace, mercy and goodness by taking them out of the garden before the could eat from the Tree of Life and live forever in a cursed, fallen state.

  30. joycemb says:

Mart seedbed was especially meaningful and helpful to me today again.

  31. street says:

Would it have been more merciful, compassionate, and gracious of our God to cover our nakedness— without evidence of what happened to us, to our understanding of Him, and even to all nature— in the curse of a Paradise Lost?

it would have diminished the of the image of God in man and there by diminished the Glory of God Himself.

  32. joycemb says:

    Wow street

  33. saled says:

    “. . . as we sing in wonder-and groan under the curse. . ”

    Yes, it’s both isn’t it.

In Maine, all the plants and animals seem to rush toward maturity the moment that spring arrives. We delight in the birds songs, the sparrow and robins and owls and loons and so many more. We delight in the sounds of the frogs, and the sight of fawns and newly emerged bear cubs. And we delight in the wild flowers and the grasses that appear and flower so quickly. And in it all there is both joy and a kind of melancholy in knowing how fleeting it is.

And if God had just left us to wonder and not told us about the fall, where would we be? Thank you Mart for clarifying, and thank you Steve for your paraphrase. I think we would be in the same position as children. We would be both childlike and childish. It seems to me that knowing about the fall and redemption gives us a chance to see the difference between the natural and the spiritual, a chance to consider and choose the better way.

  34. SFDBWV says:

In today’s continuing inane slide toward new lows in character and integrity we have new words to explain dishonesty.

“Fake news” “mis-spoke” and the like. With this instant communication of people all over the world at once, once false witness is expressed and out of the box it can never be put back in totally.

I like some of you I would imagine have read that the story of creation actually was a story found in the ancient beliefs of Babylon and where the Jew adopted it while in captivity there.

If I had not known that the Jew already had the “Book” of Genesis written by Moses institutionally an integral part of their “religion” I might have been fooled or mis-led by such “reporting”.

In fact it is my belief that all ancient cultures that record a similar story of creation comes from the fact that all nations of men came from those stories of creation, the flood and subsequent division of languages at the Tower of Babel and movement of mankind all over the globe. Taking the story of creation with them.

And yes the loss of Paradise as well as the story of a savior to restore all things.

It seems that every culture of man has wondered what happened to us to make things so unjust, so out of place, so miserable. Taking steps to restore order only to fail over and over again and again.

Whereas it is my personal belief that all of the story of creation including the fall of man and loss of Paradise is a part of the “whole picture” and plan of God, it is also my belief that the creation of the Hebrew people was to set the “story” straight, to reintroduce the Creator and get the Truth out there and most importantly to produce the Savior of mankind and all of creation.

As time seems to speed up, time is actually running out and the enemy of God, sometimes referred to as the father of lies, is busy throwing confusion into the minds of those unprotected and more easily deceived with “fake information” and “mis-spoken” half-truths. His intention to lie once again to mankind in his war against God and attempt to separate man from God.

We are told the Truth, so that we know the Truth and once the Truth is a part of our very souls we cannot be deceived by lies.

    Daily walking close to Thee

  36. jeff1 says:

I don’t believe I should worry about things way beyond by understanding because that can bring doubt and overwhelm me but when I focus on Christ who has overcome the world then I put things back in perspective and see who is still in control of the world.

It is not about how I see the world but that I see God still effective in it and when I see how He has moved things forward then I know His ways will overcome man’s ways and my faith is strengthened.

Fight the good fight with all thy might!
    Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right;
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
    Thy joy and crown eternally.

Run the straight race through God’s good Grace,
    Lift up thine eyes, and seek His face;
Life with its way before us lies,
Christ is the path, and Christ the prize.

    Cast care aside, lean on thy Guide;
    His boundless mercy will provide;
Trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its life, and Christ its love.

Faint not nor fear, His arms are near,
    He changeth not, and thou art dear;
Only believe, and thou shalt see
That Christ is all in all to thee.

  37. joycemb says:

Enoch and Elijah were taken up to heaven without suffering the curse of death. Thinking what does it take to be so “special”? Though they saw their share of heartaches, groaning is a huge part of life on earth. I know that without my own “groaning” pains I’d still be looking to gather the best this world has to offer without considering the cost- probably to myself and others. Yet the cost being not knowing the One who is the Best of everything He’s created or his creatures have manufactured using His resources. Lucky I am to know Him. Blessed and more blessed. How deep is His grace, goodness and mercy? As deep as my deepest, darkest pain or sin. That’s deep.

  38. SFDBWV says:

Joyce I know some disagree with my thinking on this subject and that is fine, but I believe that Enoch and Elijah are the two “witnesses” or “Prophets” mentioned in Revelation. Whose death is celebrated worldwide (internet & TV).

I know it was Elijah and Moses at the “mount of transfiguration”, but I believe that to mean something else.

Just some of the fun things about studying Scripture.

    Steve

  39. joycemb says:

    Yes indeed Steve:-)

  40. poohpity says:

Isn’t it true that we can assume things that are not written and lean on what one thinks or understands, that normally leads to many false beliefs? Like when people believe they know when the apocalypse will happen when one is told plainly that no one knows the time, so many guesses about many things but none are based on facts. I believe there are many things that God has withheld from us because we do not need to know and just look at what we are given to know, how many people actually pay attention to those? From telling the very first couple do not eat from the tree of knowledge because it would cause harm they did not listen and today our quest for knowledge often causes more harm than good.

If we are aware of our need for God and the covering of the blood of the lamb we are the wisest people on earth and that seems to be the most important need to know that we can know.

  41. poohpity says:

Look what happened to all the wisdom God gave to Solomon in the end it seemed to be more of a curse than a blessing.

  42. jeff1 says:

Known only to Him are the great hidden secrets
I’ll fear not the darkness when my flame shall dim
I know not what the future holds
But I know who holds the future
Its a secret known only to Him

In this world of fear and doubt
On my knees I ask the question
Why a lonely, heavy cross I must bear
Then He tells me in my prayer
    Its because I am trustworthy
He gives me strength far more than my share

Known only to Him are the great hidden secrets
I’ll fear not the darkness when my flame shall dim
I know not what the future holds
But I know who holds the future
Its a secret known only to Him

  43. poohpity says:

Good song Viv. It seems it all come down to trust and faith. If we trust God has our good in mind and His love for us then we grow in our dependence.

  44. street says:

    The Curse
thinking about the curse two fold, and probable more.
    1 the flesh
2 the law, could not help.

Ephesians 2:15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace,

God eliminates the curse of the flesh and the law in Christ, this is where it really gets interesting. He seated us in Christ in Heaven??????? trying to wrap my mind around that one. can’t be a bad place to be!

  45. joycemb says:

Why we are admonished to set our minds on things above and not below, I think. The view and atmosphere are so much better:-)

  46. joycemb says:

Viv I love how you are always looking up!!!

  47. street says:

the phrase so heavenly minded and of no earthly good comes to mind….. yet we crucified the Son of God and it turned out for our good. the world finds no value in the cross, but some do. paul talked about an offense and a stubbing block, of gentiles and jews, God’s Glory and mans hope. it’s not just the cross, but the resurrection, and ascension. living without faith hope and/or love is the Greatest Curse of sinful man. you can deny sin and evil and call it whatever, but you can not cure it or death. death does come like a thief in the night and you do leave everything behind. what is your joy that is before you? this may seem dark to some, but i remind you Jesus is the light of the world.

  48. jeff1 says:

Thinking I cannot imagine what surprises God has in store. I am too earthly minded which hopefully makes me of use to God.

I don’t think I am always looking up, Joyce, but when I am not, I listen to songs or poetry that takes my mind of circumstances that despair me and it renews my hope and faith.

Then there is the times I know God has spoken to me through others which blows my mind away because it overwhelms me to know that God has touched me with His words and its personally for me, me the little sparrow, and God speaks to me which reassures me that I am His and I think of Romans 8:39 and I am overwhelmed at how blessed I am.

  49. jeff1 says:

Lately Lord, I almost feel like dyin’
Wakeup like a child slowly cryin’
Sometimes Lord, I just can’t keep from cryin’
I can’t find the strength to carry on
    Jesus it’s me again
    Down on my knees again
    Asking you please again
    Reach out you hand
    Jesus it’s me again
    Down on my knees again
    Asking you please again
    Reach out your hand

Time to time I try to find a reason
To talk to you from time to time before
But this time Lord Your Will is my command
And I know I just can’t take it anymore
    Jesus it’s me again
    Down on my knees again
    Asking you please again
    Reach out your hand
    Jesus it’s me again
    Down on my knees again
    Asking you please again
    Reach out your hand
    Reach out your hand

  50. poohpity says:

For me it also takes a choice of will looking at all the evil that is around or to force myself to look for the good instead. For my flesh it is oh so very easy to look at the curse/evil rather than see all the blessings but then again looking at the reasons that made the covering of the animal skins or the blood of the lamb necessary, I sure do appreciate that covering more. Although I do find that there are times when I take the covering for granted and tell God about all the things that are missing in my life rather than being grateful for what I do have and I do have so very very much just in knowing the very source of all living things.

  51. joycemb says:

Viv I don’t know you personally but what you post here shows you know Who to go to for help and hope. I’ve said for years that my favorite mentors in the faith are mostly dead people who write about God and knew him well- the apostles, theologians, saints and other assorted pilgrims.

The curse is in listening to those around you who think they know something about Gods ways and say the same thing over and over again to try to get their point across, to no avail. Always seeking to promote themselves more than God. The blessing comes in seeking God only and hearing His voice as He chooses to use tried and tested devoted followers who have finished the race. Race on dear friend across the sea!

  52. poohpity says:

I am more than open to hearing from anyone who has a relationship with God in the here and now. Those who are not blinded and deaf by prejudices and hate. God uses many the world considers weak, foolish and despised to share His Good News. (1 Cor 1:27-29 NIV)

How often do people believe what another teaches just because they like the person even if what that person teaches is false and not based on facts but only on opinions?

  53. joycemb says:

Pooh I was speaking to Viv not you. Sorry you got upset.

  54. street says:

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure,

That He should give His only Son, to make a wretch His treasure.

How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turns His face away,

As wounds which mar the Holy One, bring many sons to glory.

  55. poohpity says:

Oh I apologize I thought the last paragraph was an innuendo towards someone other than Viv. But if you were applying it only to Viv I sure did misunderstand. I have never sensed the Viv was pointing anyone to herself and not to God. She seems to most often point people to God, not her thoughts or opinions and has often said that she can not know what is in another person’s heart as you seem to do often.

  56. joycemb says:

If the innuendo fits…. apology accepted, thanks. I believe there is hope for you yet pooh! But stop applying what’s in your heart to others and you will have more peace. Accept whatever the Holy Spirit is trying to teach you. It’s awful painful sometimes, I know that we’ll.

  57. joycemb says:

Lesson closed for the day on my end.

  58. SFDBWV says:

“Which came first the chicken or the egg?”

I have no interest in feeding the festering pot of strife, so for those who like to argue save your energy for someone else, I refuse to participate at any level.

Since the subject is about the “curse” and not about the blessing, I will speak of such.

Many times we hear the comment, how is it possible for the pot to critique the potter. Or for that matter even understand all that goes into the making of the clay, for the making of the pot and even for what purpose the pot is for.

In the muse that Mart has ask from Exodus 34:6-7 what I see is a balance. A Creator who is in balance.

How can a person truly understand being blessed without experiencing being cursed? How is it possible to fully understand grace without experiencing being freed of the curse?

Especially when we did nothing to “earn” grace.

The free gift of God through His Son and our Savior Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah.

We owe Him a lot and how we live from receiving His gift from that moment forward is how we honor Him and His gift.

In balance and harmony like when the morning stars sang together in the wee hours of creation.

Rain and fog at 47 degrees this afternoon in the mountains of West Virginia.

Have 4 humming birds and an Oriole feeding at the feeder today.

  59. joycemb says:

Steve I was just reading about that in Romans 11 which says in verse 32. For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all. Without the curse we would not have known mercy, hallelujah! God had it all covered!

  60. joycemb says:

I do, however think we are standing on sandy ground when we judge another believer on their lifestyle/behavior. looking for change is wonderful yet as I well know the immediate changes at first are often tested and I may not always look to others as a Christian (should?!?!) look. Best to just love everyone and let God sort em’ out. ( I just read that on FB and love it!!)

  61. jeff1 says:

Yes, Joyce, I very much find that the stories of the characters in the Bible are the ones that encourage me when I feel low and unsure of whether I am pleasing God or not.

I have in the past listened to people rather than God but now I have learned to use discernment and know that there is much more to being a Christian than beliefs.

It is a difficult walk and I am learning everyday that there is days I do better than others.

It is in knowing this that I now understand others weaknesses and so can have empathy and understanding rather than being critical and judgemental and I believe God wants us to patient with each other as any of us can be lead astray when we take our focus off Jesus and His teaching and follow our own beliefs and cultures.

I believe as the world gets darker it is becoming more difficult to discern God’s truths so those with God’s knowledge will lead those who are less knowledgeable.

We must humble ourselves to understand God for His ways are not our ways I believe.

  62. joycemb says:

Thanks for that Steve. I myself find direction more from Jesus and Paul, Peter etc when the HS directs me as He usually does. Yet we can learn what Christian character looks like from the OT images.
Patience is hard, I know, but thank God a day is only 24 hours so we get a fresh do over daily. Glad your little light is shining in your part of this dark world, as all the other bloggers here in their various parts of the globe. Blessings to you and yours.

  63. joycemb says:

Oh sorry Viv that was in regards to your post and not to Steve.

  64. jeff1 says:

I hope you enjoy this song from Charlie Landsborough, Joyce, and all who enjoy their music.

Shine your light against the dark
Stand upright and make your mark
Do your best wherever you may be
And shine your light for me

Long ago when I was just
    a boy of tender years
My father told me life’s a road
    Paved with joy and tears
And as you travel you must choose
    Between what’s right and wrong
    Remember sin is giving in
    For Heaven’s sake be strong

    Repeat Chorus

As I grew beyond my teens
    The world began to press
My fathers words began to fade
    Lost to selfishness
And after years of walking down
The wrong side of the track
One night I cried and deep inside
    My father’s words came back

    Repeat Chorus

My father said that kindness is
The light of God in man
So I was told to shine like gold
    On everyone I can
I changed my ways and did my best
To right the wrong I’d done
I settled down and in a year
God blessed us with a son
Now he’s barely nine years old
    A learner on life’s way
He wonders why a day goes by
    He doesn’t hear me say

    Repeat Chorus

Do your best wherever you may be
    And shine you light
    Shine your light
Do your best wherever you may be
And shine your light for me

  65. poohpity says:

It looks like paradise was lost when the one’s God created no longer trusted in Him but went on what the serpent offered rather than what they already had. The grass always looks greener on the other side. They were tempted that there could be more rather than delighting in what was all around them. God is not enough seems to be the intent of the evil one. There is more to life than a relationship with God and others, we can become more like God the devil whispers so eventually we will grow to thinking we will never need Him. I can do it myself type of attitude because God is not actually good and does not have our best in mind.

The curse may just be something so easy as self reliance and self gratification which seems to be exactly some of what the lessons of the garden teaches as well as the desire to be like God rather than depending on Him to be Him. The creation teaching the creator and trusting themselves like the little child who says repeatedly I can do it myself.

  66. poohpity says:

That is a generational curse that still rears it’s ugly head still till this day. I do not need you Lord, nor your warnings nor your guidance.

  67. poohpity says:

My ways are far better than yours.

  68. joycemb says:

Viv your song reminded me of this one. My daughter and I sang a duet in church in the early 80’s.

    Father’s Eyes
    Amy Grant

I may not be every mother’s dream for her little girl,
And my face may not grace the mind of everyone in the world.
But that’s all right, as long as I can have one wish I pray:
When people look inside my life, I want to hear them say,

    She’s got her father’s eyes,
    Her father’s eyes;
Eyes that find the good in things,
    When good is not around;
Eyes that find the source of help,
    When help just can’t be found;
    Eyes full of compassion,
    Seeing every pain;
    Knowing what you’re going through
    And feeling it the same.
    Just like my father’s eyes,
    My father’s eyes,
    My father’s eyes,
    Just like my father’s eyes.

And on that day when we will pay for all the deeds we have done,
Good and bad they’ll all be had to see by everyone.
And when you’re called to stand and tell just what you saw in me,
More than anything I know, I want your words to be,

    She had her father’s eyes,
    Her father’s eyes;
Eyes that found the good in things,
    When good was not around;
Eyes that found the source of help,
    When help would not be found;
    Eyes full of compassion,
    Seeing every pain;
    Knowing what you’re going through,
    And feeling it the same.
    Just like my father’s eyes,
    My father’s eyes,
    My father’s eyes,
    Just like my father’s eyes.
    My father’s eyes,
    My father’s eyes,
    Just like my father’s eyes.

  69. joycemb says:

Yah Pooh that generational curse started when lucifer was cast down from heaven for trying to be God Himself-just as Adam and Eve were cast out of Eden. So blessed to have access again, or not. It’s our choice, blessing or curse. We must choose.

  70. joycemb says:

It’s good to be reminded that God choose us! Think of it! Instead of giving up God chose us! Yay!

  71. street says:

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

i guess when you think about what is going on around us, a battle, you need to look past the circumstances by faith. Jesus said you are not looking out for the concerns of God. looking out after ourselves has left us broken and lifeless. does God have mans best interest at heart or does satan? denying oneself is hard to do, but necessary for life and happiness and even then there is nothing to brag about other than God. faith really is a gift from God.

  72. jeff1 says:

Thank you for sharing this beautiful song, Joyce.

  73. SFDBWV says:

A big smile at Mart’s comment that say’s “even the natural laws of sowing and reaping are broken”.

I have often over time recalled Solomon’s statement saying he didn’t understand why it was that good people lost and bad people won (paraphrasing). I think most all of us wonder about that even today a few thousand years later.

I have a small paperback book here that tells of the fate of each Disciple and how each died a violent death, with the lone exception of John who spent his life a prisoner on Patmos.

It is one of those very controversial observations of “religious” leaders who become rich as a result of their ministries. While many non-famous un-named Christian’s struggle to make ends meet. In the Catholic Church the priests not only give up a “normal” life but certainly are never made rich by their work for Christ.

Will always laugh at the words of a Hank Williams Jr. song that says “the preacher says to send your money to God, but then gives you his address.”

Yes there is a curse afoot alright, and many times in the form a parasite that feeds off of everyone else’s good nature, and they not only get away with it, they prosper…or so it may seem.

“What does it matter to gain the whole world and lose your soul?”

Those accursed don’t believe in a world to come, only in the one they live in now.

While we the blessed believe we are only pilgrims in this world awaiting that one to come.

Small wonder things look out of place to us, we don’t belong here.

  74. jeff1 says:

I’m satisfied with just a cottage below
A little silver and a little gold
But in that city where the ransomed will shine
I want a gold one that’s silver lined

I’ve got a mansion just over the hilltop
In that bright land where we’ll never grow old
And some day yonder we will never more wander
But walk on streets that are purest gold

Don’t think me poor or deserted or lonely
I’m not discouraged I’m heaven bound
I’m but a pilgrim in search of the city
    I want a mansion, a harp and a crown

I’ve got a mansion just over the hilltop
In that bright land where we’ll never grow old
And some day yonder we will never more wander
But walk on streets that are purest gold

  75. street says:

The rest of the Scriptures show that even this natural law of sowing and reaping is broken. While we sometimes suffer for our own sin— that’s not always the case. Job and Jesus didn’t. Yet because the infection leaves no one and nothing untouched, all creation groans with the spirit of our humanity (Rom 8:22-23 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ) and with the Spirit of our God (Rom 8:26 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ).

yes the natural law of sowing and reaping is broken in a broken world. it is mentioned in Job in the bet God had with satan. does job serve God for “nothing”? the determining event, of the bet, was whether job could speak correctly about God. in all of job’s discord with God he spoke correctly. we are told job is a Righteous Man and we do well to listen carefully. thinking about a Righteous God who settles accounts at the Judgment. it is better to settle with you adversary before you go before the judge.

    Matthew 5:25
“Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.

sin makes us an adversary of God, God removes sin through His Son in disposing of it correctly. a new Spirit is needed to do this. circumcision of the heart. the removal of the curse.

  76. poohpity says:

Steve, how do you think a church pays for the rent, utilities and salaries if not for the gifts given by those who attend? They church also gives out food and many other things to help so where would that money come from if not for the gifts of the congregation? It is totally biblical to give to those who serve. If a Pastor/priest serves how would they eat, live when giving their whole life.

    In the OT the priest’s lived off of the sacrifices and then in the NT Paul explained;
Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk?

8 Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned? 10 Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. 11 If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more?

Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? 14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.

  77. poohpity says:

Not to say that there are not those who abuse the privileged but one day all will answer to God and in the meantime He has given us discernment to carefully examine who we give to. Most churches give account of how they spend the money entrusted to them, that is usually available upon request, if not already publicized.

  78. street says:

“Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way,

Mark 12:36 David himself said in the Holy Spirit, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet.”’

  79. street says:

    enemies
    the law
    the flesh
    spirit of man
    satan
    God’s Word

He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” head/rule

    and He shall Reign Forever!

  80. joycemb says:

Have a blessed Mothers Day pooh and Viv. Same to all other mothers here also. God bless you for the incredible job of mothering you’ve all done!

  81. jeff1 says:

Thank you, Joyce, I still have one of my sons at home with me and although he is old enough to look after himself it is difficult not to mother him.

Here we celebrate Mothering Sunday, on the fourth Sunday of Lent and this year my son gave me a beautiful bouquet of flowers and my son who lives away sent me a lovely card.

Hope you too have a blessed day.

  82. poohpity says:

Oooh thank you Joyce. I hope your day is special too. However lately I do not feel I did such an incredible job but I did do the best I knew how. Not a good day for me but I hope it is for all those Mother’s out there.

  83. jeff1 says:

I, too, Pooh, find myself questioning my parenting skills and wondering why other parents seem to get it right while I seem to be lacking.

As another mother once said to me ‘guilt’ seems to be written on our foreheads when it comes to our children.

Being a parent is like being on a roller coaster ride thrilling and fearful all at the one time.

The blessing of being a parent is that it makes me a more selfless person because it is a life long commitment in that no matter what their age you will always see them as your children.

It reminds me that that is how God sees us as a life time commitment and gives me a peace that surpasses understanding.

In This World I Walk Alone
With No Place To Call My Home
But There’s One Who Holds My Hand
On The Rugged Road Through Barren Lands

The Way Is Dark, The Road Is Steep
But He’s Become My Eyes To See
Strength To Climb, My Grief To Bear
The Saviour Lives Inside Me There

In Your Love I Find Release
    A Haven From My Unbelief
Take My Life And Let Me Ee
A Living Prayer, My God To Thee

Through These Trials Of Life I Find
    Another Voice Inside My Mind
It Comforts Me And Bids Me Live
Inside The Love The Father Gives

In Your Love I Find Release
    A Haven From My Unbelief
Take My Life And Let Me Be
A Living Prayer, My God To Thee

Take My Life And Let Me Be
A Living Prayer, My God To Thee

  84. joycemb says:

Remembering a few years ago Lisa on Discovering the Word did a teaching called “She Did What She Could”. (I hope I have that right). We as moms can only give what we have yet we bear the weight of guilt for not giving what we didn’t have forever it seems. Time to let go I think. Living under the curse is never easy. Thank you Jesus for blessing me this day, again!

  85. poohpity says:

Have mercy on me,[a] O God,
    according to your steadfast love;
    according to your abundant mercy
    blot out my transgressions.
    2
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!

    3
    For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
    4
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
    and blameless in your judgment.
    5
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
    6
Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,
and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

    7
    Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
    8
    Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
    9
Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
    10
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right[b] spirit within me.
    11
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
    12
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.

    13
Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
    14
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,
    O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.
    15
    O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
    16
    For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;
you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
    17
    The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

If I did not know the state of my heart then I could not even begin to understand the depth of mercy, compassion and grace needed to cover my nakedness.

  86. poohpity says:

Without the knowledge of what David did in reference to Uriah and Bathsheba just like in the garden then Psalms such as the one above may have never been written. It seems we have to understand what was lost in Paradise to embrace the curse and what it leads us to, the Cross. Luke 23:43

  87. poohpity says:

So now our Paradise is kept in heaven away from the way we tend to mess things up. God knows what He is doing, :-)

  88. jeff1 says:

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold
I’d rather be His than have riches untold
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or land
I’d rather be led by His nail scarred hands

Than to be a king of the best domain
Or be held in sin’s dreads way
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
    This world affords today

I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause
I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause
I’d rather have Jesus than world wide things
I’d rather be true to His holy name

Than to be a king of the best domain
Or be held in sin’s dreads way
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
    This world affords today

  89. bubbles says:

Pooh, thank you for that Psalm; I needed that. I will read it again and again.

  90. street says:

7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”

9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

10 This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)

11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”

12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”

13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. 14 Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.” 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16 At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him.

seeing this passage a little different today, where Jonah as a substitute for God and seeing the prayer of the sailors in a terrible storm. no God did not sin,but He accepted responsibility for sin at the cross whom we threw overboard. he really does take care of the curse.

  91. street says:

    the sea became calm
