What Does Revelation 22:11 Mean?

So how does the Big Picture and Story of the Bible help us to understand a quote as difficult as we find in Revelation 22:11?

“He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still.”

If we look at the statement all by itself it seems to contradict the spirit of the Bible. Lifted out of context it looks as if it is saying either:

1.    Whatever will be will be.

2.    Anything goes. It’s your choice.

3.    Everything’s good and allowable, just different.

4.    No point in trying. We are the way we are.

Just as certainly, quoted out of context, Revelation 22:11 seems heartless and without comfort for those who choose either path.

But as Bob from Cornwall suggested in his comment in response to the last post, if we read these words in the context of how the true story of the Bible is coming to an end, they are rich with meaning that is consistent with the whole revelation of God (with all going back to Genesis and even with the few verses that remain).

Here Jesus, through his angelic messenger, is letting us know that when we come to the end of time, we will have made the choices that will go with us into eternity.

I’ll quote a well known commentary by a man named Barnes, “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still.” This must refer to the scenes beyond the judgment, and must be intended to affirm an important truth in regard to the condition of men in the future state. It cannot refer to the condition of men this side of the grave, for there is no fixed and unchangeable condition in this world. At the close of this book and at the close of the whole volume of revealed truth, it was proper to declare, in the most solemn manner, that when these events were consummated everything would be fixed and unchanging; that all who were then found to be righteous would remain so for ever; and that none who were impenitent, impure, and wicked, would ever change their character and condition…” (Barnes Notes on the New Testament).

The fact that 22:11 is not to be taken fatalistically for those who still have a choice is seen in the words that follow where we read, “I Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.” And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:16-17).

Here, as we might expect, we find the heart of our Savior urging everyone to satisfy their God-given longing for life and mercy to come to him… followed by the reassuring last words of the Bible, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

In the context of the whole story of the Bible, words that could be so confusing and misunderstood take on a solemn meaning of warning for those who have not yet responded to the offer of our Savior…and comfort to those who have.

I think these verses depict the last chance to change. If I don’t want to be unjust or filthy, I still have a chance to change and choose. If I desire to remain righteous and to seek holiness, then I can still pursue it. Why, because the last verses in Revelation continue to offer hope. I still have the opportunity to accept my Lord and Savior or continue to affirm Him.

Until Jesus returns again, all have the opportunity to affirm and accept Him. In Timothy, Paul writes that God desires all be saved. We have the power of choosing. This verse represents the final warning. If we don’t accept all that has been written before, the angel gives us one final opportunity to know the truth and be set free.

For us who have accepted Christ we desire those closing words, “Come Lord Jesus.”

  2. SFDBWV says:

Knowledge of scripture; Paul repeatedly called for our increase in the knowledge of the *truth*. Timothy 2:4, Ephesians 1:17 are two examples of such desire for us.

However 1Corinthians 13:2 says even if I understand all mysteries, what good is it if I do not have love? Then there is Ephesians 3:19; “And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.”

Personally I think that Revelation 22:11 simply states the condition Jesus will find men in when He returns. Verse 12 says “AND” I come quickly; Even though all throughout the scripture signs and warning of His return are given, He will suddenly appear and find people going about life as they have always been doing.

Just as His first coming found them, some knew of His coming (righteous and holy) some should have known but were about their own selfish lifestyles (unjust and filthy).

So it will be when He returns.

We all know that God is Sovereign. I cannot fathom the depth of His awesomeness, nor can I fathom the existence of a dimension without time, space and mass.

In demonstrating His love for a peculiar people, the Bible reveals his interaction with Pharaoh: “Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.” – Romans 9:17-18

All men are thieves like Pharaoh, for we have all sinned and placed other gods before Our Creator. He places circumstances and events in our lives to bring us to repentance.

I was but one of two thieves hanging on a cross. I looked to Him for mercy and forgiveness, for He gave me faith. I do not question His motive. His love was manifested in my heart.

Others, like Pharaoh, may proceed on a different path… for one reason or another. Only God knows.

Dr. John Piper reasons that “God’s actions… are governed by the depth of his wisdom expressed through a plan that no ordinary human deliberation would ever conceive (Romans 11:33-36; 1 Corinthians 2:9). There are holy and just reasons for why the affections of God’s heart have the nature and intensity and proportion that they do.”

It may be simplistic, but I just want to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus.

    Blessed Sunday to all, Ray

I was thinking of Matthew 25:1-13 the parable of the ten bridesmaids. Or Matthew 25:31-46 the parable about the final judgment.

  5. tracey5tgbtg says:

The verse from Rev 22:11 is one I’ve read many times and it has never registered. I certainly know Rev 22:17 because that verse has spoken endless comfort to my heart.

But to focus on Rev 22:11 – what is that verse saying? I thought about it for a while and to my mind came Isaiah 64:6 “…all our righteous acts are like filthy rags.” That has two of the qualities listed in Rev 22:11 although the NIV says vile instead of filthy.

I also thought about Luke 18:9-14 which is the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. While the Pharisee was thankful that he was so good, the tax collector begged for mercy because he knew he was a sinner.

When I read Rev 22:11 I am convicted. I don’t want to be unjust or filthy, but I know I often am. I want to be righteous and holy, but that is nothing I can bring about on my own. Romans 7:15-25

So I think that verse means don’t dwell on what you are for we are all unjust and filthy in our own strength yet righteous and holy through Christ. It is all about Jesus Christ.

We are all like that, but there are some that just don’t know it. They think they are OK the way they are and they don’t need Jesus Christ. How to tell them the truth?

  6. poohpity says:

I was also reminded of the story of Elisha following Elijah. Elisha dropped what he was doing and followed right away without hesitation by sacrificing his oxen so he could longer use them to be a farmer but to be a prophet for the Lord. Those who want to cling to the things that are vile and wrong will not let go in those days but will hang on to what they know if they are following after holiness and righteousness we will let go, follow and worship only God.

  7. scout1 says:

    Howdy!

Mart, I really like the picture that you put with this post. :) This reminds me of what the Lord said about Jacob and Esau. God knew which man would be righteous and which would not follow him. It is quite a paradox that God knows all and yet we still are promised hope if we will just believe. What a wonderful God!

    Blessings

  8. BruceC says:

What I see is that when Christ returns at His Second Coming is two kinds of people left in the world. Those that have taken the mark of the beast and those Tribulation saints that have survived the onslaught on the anti-Christ. Those with the mark of the beast are codemned along with the anti-Christ and false prophet; those that have trusted Christ at risk to their lives will go on into the Millenium. Whne He returns; thern the time for a “second chance” has already past and those without Christ die in their sins.

John 3:16-19 (New King James Version)
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

If a person did not believe and put their faith in Christ before his death he will be condemned and will die in his sins. However; up until his death God is giving him all the chances he needs to escape the wrath to come. Reminds me of the repentant thief on the cross next to Jesus. That is a perfectly clear example of how God offers His loving grace through Christ right up to the time of death. If all “unjust, filthy, and unholy people” were to remain that way without hope then we all would be condemned.

  9. foreverblessed says:

    The picture is beautifull.
Thank you all for sharing your thoughts, they make me meditate on it more.
I did my shot at this verse in the previous topic already.
Talking about Gods love that is everlasting, His mercy is forever, Hope is forever. And as long as people exist, they can call on God, even when in hell, who knows?
Psalm 53:4 Will the evildoers never learn— those who devour my people as men eat bread and who do not call on God?
It is written with a question mark, so, who knows?
Psalm 86:5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you.
psalm 145:18 The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

The time settin of this verse:
it is the angel telling this to John almost 2000 years ago. So this is not the description of the end of end, but before Jesus comes, as in verse 12 He says: Behold I am coming soon.

When you hear the words of this book, act on it, do not delay.

Florida7son, the depth of Gods Wisdom is unfathonable
I like it when this verse might mean much more then we can fathom now.

  10. bratimus says:

    Mark !2:1-11

  11. foreverblessed says:

    A citation from Eusebius,
The Number of those who fought for Religion in Gaul Under Verus and the Nature of their Conflicts. (AD 177)
Describing terrible persecution, but when the christians remained trustworthy and loyal to their faith in Jesus, and so conquered the adverseror, their persecutors would get worse:

“For through their lack of manly reason, the fact that they had been conquered did not put them to shame, but rather the more enkindled their wrath as that of a wild beast, and aroused alike the hatred of governor and people to treat us unjustly: that the Scripture might be fulfilled: He that is lawless, let him be lawless still, and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still. Rev 22:11”

(I found this in Bible Explorer)

  12. foreverblessed says:

Sorry, that was the advertisement in the site: godrules
I found some describtions of the persecutions christians the first few centuries.
This site also gave cross references on Revelation 22:11:
    Revelation 16:8-11, 21
    Psalm 81:12
    Proverbs 1:24-33, 14: 32
Ecclesisastes 11:3 If clouds are full of water,
they pour rain upon the earth.
Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
in the place where it falls, there will it lie.
Ezechiel 3:27 But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says.’ Whoever will listen let him listen, and whoever will refuse let him refuse; for they are a rebellious house.
Daniel 12:10 Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.

The fulfilling of this prophecy of Rev 22:11 in the persecutors of christians.

The same way as Pharao was hardened not to let the Israelites go, Romans 11 says (repeating Florida7son 10.56 am): God is Sovereign.

  13. poohpity says:

I can understand now why it is so important to know the bible so we see the big picture through the sub-plots of the bible. We can read a passage then remember somewhere else in scripture where we can find another place that will make more sense and help clarify. Not having the bible deep down in our hearts when we need to draw from it is like going into battle with no weapon. The weapon not to fight against each other but to fight against the enemy, God’s adversary (and ours), satan and sin.

  14. foreverblessed says:

Sorry, for letting me go on:
Revelation 22:11 in the positive site:
WHen reading these narratives of the persecution of chistians,(f.i. Sanctus in Gaul) you can also see that the christians in their great ordeals, show a great pearl of price, the glory of Jesus when they say their testimony of Jesus in their trial:
LEt the righteous be righteous still.
It is the power of Jesus manifested in them, the glory of God, who is greater then anything.
“Let the righteous be righteous still.”

  15. bubbles says:

This verse (Rev. 22:11) should compel all of us to be telling/sharing Jesus with others and praying for those who do not know him. It reminds us how important it is to make decisions now. Time will not last forever.

Is the commentator Barnes first name?

At the beginning of the Bible we have God looking for Adam and Eve in the garden after they hid. They weren’t looking for Him.

At the end of the Bible, we have the Lord saying “Come” and inviting people to come to Him. It seems like it comes full circle.

  16. bec4jc says:

Because it is in the last book of the Bible, even though it relates to other scriptures throughout the Bible, it still talks of finality. No more room for adjustments.

  17. bratimus says:

As i read this topic and the posts Galatians 6:1 comes to mind

Brethren if a man is overtaken in any tresspass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

We should consider ourselves when looking for meaning in the mysteries of Revelation. bec4jc’s finality, no more room for adjustments might be the way to look at it. The promise of the Bible is that this world will pass away with all its evil.

  18. poohpity says:

Amen, bubbles the great commission to go and tell. We have time to argue and discuss scripture but we may fall short when it comes to go and telling.

  19. bubbles says:

and what is scary is the thought of standing before Jesus at the Bema (sp?) seat one day to give an account of what we have done in this body. Thank God it is not to decide if we enter Heaven or not. . . but to give an account of what we as His children have done here on Earth. It is a very scary thing to consider.

I believe we will really don’t grasp His mercy, but will then.

    Good Evening All

Mart, Loved what Barnes had to say on Rev. 22:11. It helped me to understand better what Jesus meant/was trying to convey when He made that statement.

Rev. 22:11 provokes me to hope and pray that all mankind will “choose life,” and that they will accept the precious gift (Jesus) that God so lovingly gave them. It’s such an AMAZING blessing to be a child of God and a friend of God!(1 John 3:1; John 15:15) :)

Sunny and warm in Texas today (high 60’s/low 70’s).

  21. Rajnesh says:

The Book Of Revelation is a summary of Christ’s return, when He will make all things new.
The unjust and filthy will till the end be invited to receive the gift of the life-giving water (Jesus) as Regina stated.
Free will and hope is ever present. Which in turn means
God kept his covenant and promise, he never abandoned us. It’s sort of what the Story is about, isn’t it?

  22. SFDBWV says:

It is raing this morning, we had snow yesterday afternoon, it came down so intense you could only see a few dozen feet. The promise of up to 8 inches of snow this evening.

Matthew and I have been up since about 4:30am. He and I have had our breakfasts and are just relaxing today as it is a day off from his exercises.

Glenna has her own medical issues and so she usually sleeps later in the morning before she will rise.

My 92 year old mother in law, always opens her drapes on her patio window so that I will know she is up, she is.

Coal and log trucks are going up and down the highway, in their endless routine of going back and forth.

People are up and about starting their busy day, my young next door neighbors are home from a night of work and so are asleep resting up for another night of work.

The deer are making their second or third trip through my back yard eating everything they can find, always unsure of what I may be up to as I watch them from my window.

Apart from national politics and world events, this little scene of my life is played out in countless peoples lives all over the world, different only because of their own different lives they live.

This is how it will be when Christ returns. People will be going about their lives as they always have. Some people are good people some are not. Some have made the choice for Christ some have not.

Never the less Christ will return, and find His creation frozen in time as they most usually are at any given moment.

No need to make a fuss over Revelation 22:11, it simply means what it says.

    Steve

  23. poohpity says:

I agree Steve, it simply means what it says. So another day doing the same old stuff again day in and day out. Some people good some are not. Stuck in a rut I can not see my way out. God is going to do what God is going to do and I am going to do what I am going to do. Wish things were different but they aren’t.

  24. poohpity says:

I have to admit I was feeling pretty depressed by the thoughts of being stuck in a rut because I thought that I am not doing anything at this point to benefit the kingdom. I hope you realize Steve how blessed you are and bring a blessing to so many in your neighborhood, on this site and in your home. I think you are wonderful because you are just like the energizer bunny and just keep going and going.

With the days ahead of moving from a three bedroom apartment into a one bedroom and having an empty nest I began to realize that I put my worth in the things I do. I read “My Utmost for His Highest” today and was reminded the value we are to God just like we are we do not have to earn His love by the things we do. Like Mary as she chose to sit at the feet of Jesus. I often tell others that but have failed to realize it for myself.

Over the last few months I have had an attitude and have turned my grief into pushing people away from me because I did not want to loose anybody close to me again so I do not get close. I am so saddened by my attitude and hope that I will be given the forgiveness I do not deserve.

  25. saled says:

I find hope in the Dr. John Piper quote that Ray shared above, summed up by Romans 11:33 “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” I’ve spent way too much time trying to figure out how he could wipe out everyone but Noah and his family in the time of the flood, how he could kill the first born of the Egyptians when Moses led his people out from that land, how he could let two children in my town be orphaned, etc. I’m sure you know what I mean. As one of the characters says about Aslan in C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, “He is not safe.”

We can not figure Him out. His actions are not logical. I mean, is sending your son to die for sinners logical? But we know some things about him.
Most important, that he loved the world enough to let his son pay for its sins. Maybe He is not safe, but our hope is in Him.

Yes, pooh, God will do what He is going to do, and you can bet that He will surprise us. Hoping that he sends you a ladder to climb out of the rut.

  26. SFDBWV says:

Pooh, a very eloquent and welcome comment, thank you.

Matthew and I pray every night before bedtime and have a long list of people for whom we lift up to God. You are always on the list. Our old friend Charlotte was, so now we pray for Sam (her husband) and her family.

The one wonderful gift that God gives to we His children is the gift of *hope*. No matter where we are in our lives, no matter how dark or stormy there is light at the end of the story. Keeping our eyes fixed upon that light, and putting all of our trust in the one who gives the light will eventually bring us to that eternal light, where there is no more tears no more sorrow, no more darkness.

Be content in knowing that when the hour of Christ’s coming you will be counted among the righteous still.

One thing to remember is that if you ask God to use you, He will. Be prepared for the fact that He will use you perfectly according to His will. It may seem like it isn’t enough to you, but it may be exactly what He wants from you.

    Peace and Love

    Steve

  27. SFDBWV says:

Just want to extrapolate on some of my earlier comments. The wonderful Author of Scripture is so careful to give support to all He has written.

Jesus said as it were in the days of Noah so shall the coming of the Son of man be. Matthew 24:37 He goes on in vs: 38 to give example of the fact that life was going on as usual. In vs: 39 He states that they were not prepared or ready for the flood that came and took them all away; That so shall the coming of the Son of man be.

Jesus is speaking plainly here to the men who ask them for what to expect before His return.

In Revelation 22:11 we see the exact condition of man as described by Jesus Himself just before His coming.

I would also like to say that before His birth, from Genesis through Malachi there is numerous prophesy concerning His birth. Those who had read and believed the prophesy knew when and where Christ would be born. Simeon was such a man as was Anna the prophetess. They were counted as righteous, because they knew and recognized the Christ. Because God had empowered them to do so.

The Gentile’s the famous Magi or three Kings, also knew of the coming birth of the Savior of all mankind. Because they had read and believed the ancient writings of Prophets God had sent into the world. They were ready when Jesus was born to accept Him as their Savior and pay tribute to Him.

What about the keepers of the Torah, the rulers of Israel? They were too busy making a living off of their religion, and concerned with the things of their world to seek wisdom of the scripture and have knowledge of what God had shared. They didn’t and they didn’t teach others. They had made blind the very people they were to show the way to God. So they were blind leaders of the blind.

Yet, Christ was still born, just as God desired and just as His Prophets had declared. When He came that first time, what did He find? He found some that were unjust, some that were filthy, some that were righteous, and some that were holy.

At His first coming He came to heal all that were unjust and filthy. He came to offer grace to all who ask for it.

So what then about His second coming?

All throughout the scripture are warnings of His second coming. If we are to be considered knowledgeable or righteous we must heed Revelation 3:3, and watch for His return. How do we watch? We know what the scripture says about His return and so watch for the events to unfold that lead up to His coming. So that when He returns He finds us just, righteous, and holy. Covered by the blood of the Lamb of God.

Otherwise we are found unjust, filthy and in danger of judgment.

Revelation 22:11 is just like the days of Noah, and just like the days prior to Christs birth.

    Steve

  28. florida7sun says:

    Thank you, Steve. I concur.

In my heart-of-hearts, if I took a scissor and cut any page of God’s Word; it would bleed the blood of Jesus.

We are in spiritual warfare. It exists all around us.

Like the standard that offered salvation from the bite of fiery serpents in the wilderness, Jesus is sufficient to meet every need. He is I AM.

Having once been a beggar seeking His grace and mercy, I need to stay focused on my Lord. He is my Savior, my Shepherd, and my Stronghold.

    God bless you all, Ray

  29. bec4jc says:

Steve, I said the same thing before but not as well as you have about looking for Jesus’ second coming. I agree with you that it’s compared to the days of Noah and the days prior to Christs birth. To add to it Jesus did say, just before He died,”it is finished”. So, in my eyes, the NT is written and signed in Jesus’ blood-final.

  30. pegramsdell says:

Pooh, I don’t know how you can say you don’t do anything to benefit the kingdom of God. You are a minister. You minister everyday, all the time. Why every time I talk to you I know that God has just hugged and kissed me. He speaks through you in a no-nonsense loving way. You are one of a kind. Moses didn’t thinks he could minister either. It’s the truly humble that God can use. I appreciate you girl and I love you with all my heart.

  31. bratimus says:

Isaiah 9:7 on another post the other day just the first part was writen.

Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,

TO ORDER IT AND ESTABLISH IT WITH JUDGMENT AND JUSTICE FROM THAT TIME FORWARD, EVEN FOREVER.

THE ZEAL OF THE LORD OF HOST WILL PERFORM THIS.

If we read Ezekiel 14 we see a glimpes of the Zeal of the LORD of host.

Revelation 22:11 could be the moment right before judgement.

Like the song says “I wish be could all be ready”

  32. afranz says:

Just like in Noah’s day, I was going about my daily routine this morning. My grandson’s were playing their favorite video game in the living room. I began to sort clothes and fill the washer. I reached into a pocket and found a folded piece of paper. It was a letter to God, from the eldest game player. “Lord, Am I? I just don’t know. I just play it out at church. Lord help me please.”
Time stood still. Later, I took time with them to tell them how I got saved. It’s been awhile. I showed them the verses that helped me, so maybe they will help him. He’s 12, I would appreciate any of your prayers for him.
Hope this doesn’t ruin the momentum on your current topic.

  33. bratimus says:

The words of the leter to God from afranz post fit right in to the topic.

“Lord, Am I? I just don’t. I just play it out at church. Lord help me please.”

i know of many Christians and myself whether they have written it out or prayed have use these same words or something close to it. the hope comes in the words “Lord help me please. this is a very humble act.

Out of the mouths of babes we can learn so much

  34. Regina says:

    Good Evening All

Hope your day was WONDERFUL! I’ve truly been blessed by all of the comments shared on this blog topic. Your comments brought to mind a song that I’ve loved/cherished, probably since the first time I heard it, and I want to share with you:

    “Find Us Faithful” (Steve Green)

    We’re pilgrims on the journey
    Of the narrow road
And those who’ve gone before us line the way
Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary
Their lives a stirring testament to God’s sustaining grace

Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses
Let us run the race not only for the prize
But as those who’ve gone before us
Let us leave to those behind us
The heritage of faithfulness passed on through godly lives

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
    Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift through all we’ve left behind
May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
    Lead them to believe
