What is God Hiding?

River's Edge Tree

Could it be true that the greatness of God lies not only in what he has revealed, but in what he has concealed? If so, what is he hiding?

Prov 25:2 gives us what amounts to a riddle. There we read that the glory of God is to conceal a thing but that to search out a matter is the glory of kings (Prov 25:2).

Was reading through the 25th chapter of Proverbs on the 25th day of the month when I suddenly noticed this “saying of the wise” that I have read so many times before, but never spent any time with.  Thought about it for awhile. Had a couple of ideas and then started reading a bunch of commentaries…

What I found is that students of the Bible generally seem to agree on the meaning of the second half of the proverb. In one way or another many agree that the greatness and goodness of  kings is found in their  commitment to fully investigate the concerns and complaints of their citizens so that their government will be based on foundations of justice.

But I’m guessing that it’s in the first half of the Proverb  where the real treasure is buried. In what sense does the goodness and greatness of God lie in what he conceals?

It seems evident that one evidence of the greatness of God is that, because he understands everything, he doesn’t have to search out anything. But what is he hiding that reveals the greater glory of God?

I think that’s worth thinking and talking about together.

What is God hiding? When I think of God’s response to Job I think of all the wonders of creation, in this answer are hidden more questions as everything around us in this physical world awaits discovery and inspection. Always leading to more questions than answers.

When I think of the belief (from ancient rabbinical studies) that there exists 12 dimensions of existence and realize that today’s astrophysicists already acknowledge their belief in as many as 10; I see many hidden things.

Then if I attempt to understand the depth of God or contemplate eternity, I am stopped for a complete loss of ability to fully comprehend such things.

Hidden in scripture are little bits and pieces of treasure, knowledge of God, His plans, His desires for us, His evidence of being all found there for the looking.

Hidden also in scripture are our road maps for living and confidence in Christ.

It is fun to go treasure hunting, but can be very exhausting, also be sure to take a buddy along for safety I believe the best helper in this matter is The Holy Spirit as He is charged with leading us into all truth.

On a lighter note, God asks Job if he knows when snow is kept; well we have 5 inches of it this morning with a promise of more today, maybe He’s keeping a little here, today.

I watched a very interesting program on PBS a couple weeks ago about how the brain misleads us and tricks us. I had seen the program before and am always amused at how accurate the information was as to how the brain sees what isn’t there.

How the brain will fill in gaps or assume things from memory even when your looking at is not what is registered; which is why optical illusions work.

I’ve said all this to explain how I could have said “when” in my first comment whereas I thought I had written *where*, even after I had proof read it.

I suppose that is why publishers have so many editors with different sets of eyes and brains looking at a product before it is printed.

It is still snowing and actually quite beautiful, it won’t be as pretty in a couple months of it.

You beat me to it Steve on the dimensions. The dimensions we exist in are temporary and time to God is rolled out before Him as a scroll. He sees the beginning and the end all at once.
If God did conceal or keep in mystery; would there be a need for faith?
He revealed His character to us in the person of Jesus Christ; His Son. And through faith in Him we can have a relationship with the Father. If He thought we needed more he would have provided.
If we knew the future as God does where would that leave trust? And is not trust a large part of love?
I believe there are things of God that we will likely never know even in eternity and that is one of the many things that makes Him our God. And that is enough for me.

What is God hiding?… you mean other than the date of the Second Coming, and the last date of our days in these earthly tents? He hides “for us,” His timing.
How long was the first day He wrote about? What day was it’s number in the total number of days in His Eternity? He hides from us the “Why,’ of why we question everything according to our limited measure, and do not take for granted that He has told us everything we already need, he has given us every measure to Love, Honor, Worship and Obey Him.
He has placed a hole in us that only He can fill, and we are void until He fills it. But its filling we cannot contain, as He hides in us, what measure we hold and what measure overflows from His Abundance.
That amount, we will never know… He hides it from us,
because we are not capable of containing it.
He has hidden nothing that we cannot find in Him.
Be Blessed in His Abundance, Gary

All around us we see the Hand of God. “I AM is praised by all of creation seeking redemption from the fall of man. The fullness of the love of God for us cannot be absorbed in our physical state. He exists beyond the dimensions of time, space and matter. Only in Spirit can we obtain a small foretaste of His Majesty and Glory.

There are those who claim, “There is no God.” How foolish. The fingerprints of His Divine Triune Nature are seen everywhere. In Luke 3:22 we see the Godhead (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) in unity of purpose: the redemption of man.

Psalm 19:1-4 proclaims the work of His Hands:

The nature of substances: animal, mineral, vegetable
The dimensions of space: height, width, depth
The form of matter: solid, liquid, gas
The dimensions of time: past, present, future
The primary colors: red, yellow, blue
The components of the atom: proton, neutron, electron

At the very heart of our existence is God’s perfect order of relationships based upon dependency and love.

There were many who yelled at Jesus, “Come down from your cross and we will believe you.” He complied with their wishes. He came down, was buried, and rose again.

We have His Word and His Creation both testifying to His Truth, the only Truth. Yet even those with academic credentials and limited intellect continue to mock Him, while puffing themselves up like spiny blowfish filled with poison.

God is love and light. He is accessible to all who open the door to Him:

“For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse, who have left the straight paths to walk in dark ways, who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.” – Proverbs 2:10-15

    Blessed weekend to all, Ray

  6. oneg2dblu says:

Perhaps God is even hiding in every darkened and untouched Soul around us, just as He is revealed through every one of us He touches, when we choose to Love, Honor, Worship and Obey, Him.
When we choose to share His Light within us, haven’t we also hoosen to uncover His hiding place? Gary

    Steve… I get your point about proof reading… :)

    Good Morning Mart & Friends!

The introduction to Proverbs 25 is intriguing: “These are more proverbs of Solomon, copied by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah.” (Proverbs 25:1) It may be homage to Hezekiah, the king who pulled down the pagan altars on the high places, reinstituted study o f Torah in Judah, and fortified and protected the water supply of Jerusalem.

Finding and mining precious materials is the province of royalty – for wealth and for the making of precious objects (from gold, silver, precious gems…). It is poetically true and literally true that the Creator God has “hidden” precious materials in the rock and soil of the earth.

I believe the literal glory shown forth in the court of a great king like Hezekiah in the 8th & 7th centuries BC is a metaphor for the real wealth: knowledge of God. Hezekiah sent his representatives throughout Judah, calling the people to the Passover feast and calling them to return to their God. (2 Chronicles 30:6-20) He cleansed the temple of abominable things and reopened it to the people for worship and learning.

What was true in Solomon’s day, stated in verse one, was true again in Hezekiah’s day. The king indeed was revealing things which had been concealed. The Holy Spirit of God retreats from the place where God is not honored. Hezekiah was not perfect in his devotion to the Lord; he was not as wise as Solomon. Still, for twenty-nine years God showed him great favor. It was God who gave him glory because of his obedience. It had been at least sixty-eight years since a good king (Uzziah) had sat on the throne of Judah. Hezekiah and Josiah, the last good kings of Judah, could not turn the tide of the coming destruction and exile of Judah. Still, the Lord honored their faithfulness. God allowed them to “search for and find him.” (Jeremiah 29:13)

    Blessings,
    Maru

  9. remarutho says:

What I meant to say is: What was true in Solomon’s day, stated in verse *two*, was true again in Hezekiah’s day. Maru

  10. jam200 says:

A short response today. God conceals from us because if He didn’t we wouldn’t be able to handle everything. Whether it’s dimensional as Steve writes, our current mind and body can only handle so much.

God’s glory is immense and clear and full. His truth is pure and without equal. He reveals Himself at the right time in the right amount to each of us as much as we can handle.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

  11. poohpity says:

It seems since the beginning of humanity God wanted to conceal, for the good of His creation, by not allowing them to know the difference between good and evil. How truly funny is that, God knew that hiding something from us just makes us more inquisitive. In our desire to know more about God we can take a couple of roots, putting ones self in the place of God or trusting a supreme being with everything in life.

Yesterday in ODB the author quotes Psalm 131 and then wrote “Hush child. You would not understand if I explained it to you. Just trust me!” David trusted God with a heart of faith while it seems not trying to find out the “Why’s”. Then his son Solomon spent His life trying to find out the “Why’s” which by the end of his life came to the same conclusion Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.

Coming to a point in our lives when we stop trying to figure out “What is God Hiding?” it seems is a place of total trust, contentment and confidence in His Authority, Wisdom, Knowledge and Superiority. (Deut. 29:29; Job 42:3; Eccl 11:5; Isa. 55:8-9; Rom. 11:33-34)

  12. poohpity says:

I was also thinking about all that God has chosen to reveal to us in His Word but many do not even choose to read the bible yet want to know what God is hiding and do not even take the effort or time to be filled with what we do have. Pretty convicting isn’t it? Some would rather read another interpretation or a pastor and never find out for themselves what those pages reveal. I bet God knows our hearts and if we desire to know things with the right motives He is willing and desires to give us that wisdom. James 1:5-6

  13. remarutho says:

    Good Morning Poohpity!

I believe you are on to something! You wrote:
“Some would rather read another interpretation or a pastor and never find out for themselves what those pages reveal. I bet God knows our hearts and if we desire to know things with the right motives He is willing and desires to give us that wisdom.”
    (James 1:5-6)

My portion in the *Daily Bible* for today is a lovely harmonizing of (Matthew 13:10-17) + (Mark 4:10-12) + (Luke 8:9-10). Jesus taught through parables. His disciples asked him why he did that. He replied:

“The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and (s)he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what (s)he has will be taken from him/her. This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.” (Matthew 13:11-13)

What has been hidden for long ages is revealed in Jesus Christ — our Messiah! The truth is so simple…

    Blessings,
    Maru

  14. remarutho says:

    Good Morning Mart!

You wrote: “But what is he hiding that reveals the greater glory of God?”

What the Lord was hiding was there all along in the white linen napkin: the “affacommen” — that bread that the children must seek & find in order to receive the prize after the Passover supper!

The glory of Messiah surpasses the glory of Moses and the Law.

    Blessings,
    Maru

  15. poohpity says:

Maru, it seems even with the few things that Jesus chose to reveal about Himself and the Kingdom of God people did not accept. Can you imagine how many things about God there is to learn or know? The very fabric of life and existence or even just what the scientist try and figure out about creation alone there is more about God than we can ever fathom or imagine. We as people have yet to even figure the capacity of what the human brain can do. I think that is what takes us down to understand that we do not have a clue and be very satisfied with that. It is so funny how some people try and prove how much they know when in reality it is just a speck in the cosmos which does not really account for nothing, lol.

  16. foreverblessed says:

    But what Proverbs 25:2 means?
You made me meditate on this verse:
God is beyond our comprehension, but He gives us enough wisdom ot Him, (if we ask for it) so we can live now with Him.
There was a time when I was much younger I wanted to know everything,. There is a Psalm which says something like this: do not think too much about things that are beyond your understanding. (I cannot remember where it is found now,) but that Psalm slowly changed my wanting to know everything.
The 3 dimensions are enough for me now, I liked the series florida7sun gave.
Here are some more 3 dimensions:
    Father Son and Holy Spirit,
the Temple:: the outer court, the Holy Place, and the Holiest of Holy
Humans, being the sustenance of body, mind and spirit.
It is in the Holiest of Holy where we meet God and dwell with Him.

    Steve, about snow: Proverbs 25:13
Like the coolness of snow at harvest time
    is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him;
he refreshes the spirit of his masters.

  17. foreverblessed says:

What about this one: Psalm 103:11
    For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;
Even the love of God is too high for us to understand.
I pray I believe more and more in this fact of God, how much He loves me!

  18. joy4 says:

I rejoice in knowing that God, Our Heavenly Father, loves us so much that he protects us…or hides things from us, as our fathers here on Earth choose to protect and hide things from us. I draw confort in knowing that God has it all figured out, from Genesis,”In the beginning…to Revelations that concludes with “The End.” God has everything else in between in His Divine plan under control. God is good.

  19. gerpie says:

This morning when I read the question “What is God Hiding?” I was so sad – wondering why we are thinking about what God is hiding??? All day I have been reading the New Testament – and the last verse of 2 Peter 3:18 seems to put into words how or what I felt: “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.”

  20. bill34sl says:

It goes back to that incident in the Garden. What I believe is that after God created man in His image and likeness, He intended to reveal everything to him but only in a gradual manner. Unfortunately, the first man and woman decided to discover them themselves thru the prodding of the Evil one. Because they demonstrated they wanted to do it their way by following the evil advice, God in turn withheld this fullness of knowledge from them. Man lost his access to these “hidden treasures” very much like losing his access to the Paradise Garden and probably losing some of his original capacities.

The apostle Paul, left by the Jews from Antioch and Iconium half dead(I believe really dead)(Acts 14:19),his spirit went to Heaven and heard inexpressible things there. No one, including Paul himself, is permitted to tell what they are about. When Paul came back to life, he told his experience to the Church at Corinth but didn’t tell them what he heard there.(2 Cor.12:1-4) Nevertheless, we have hope that when we are finally united with our Lord, we will eventually know everything. (1 Cor.13:12)

  21. gerpie says:

This morning I was wondering – what is the big deal about “knowing everything”??? When I was much younger I wanted to be “wise” – but I didn’t even know what “wisdom” was. Now I am much much older – and I am sure that what I feel now is true – that is that there is no wisdom whatsoever compared to the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

  22. tominfredericksburg1 says:

As a King I have searched out the ideas presented in scripture. The word of God is alive. God is eternal. His word is eternal. Having learned those, I asked the question to God “what were you doing before you made the creation?” His answers, he is eternal, his word is eternal, his word is alive. The words “In the beginning” are for humans not God. God did not have a beginning.
Concerning the creation, HE is not a stagnat creator having created ALL once, then stopped. HE is alive and continues to create. His word is eternal, so before mankind existed ALL those words in scripture were there being played out somewhere in the creation.
God can create new everyday, a new star system, solarsytem, whatever. Know HIM and you can see far into the future and the past.

  23. johnnycool says:

I tend to write very deliberately, so I hope this doesn’t step on anyone’s toes or cause a firestorm. I respect this institution and all who participate very much. I have a habit of saying what no one else will and I see an elephant in the room no one is talking about..

I must say, my brain hurts contemplating such things, which gives me pause that perhaps we shouldn’t be going down this road. It doesn’t really resolve much, other than perhaps acknowledging the reality that we possess finite tools to contemplate the infinite – it’s sort of an exercise in futility.

Beyond that, however, it also feels a little uncomfortable to have this underlying sense to this type of discussion that God may be potentially ‘keeping something from us’ – that there is surely more to know and if so, perhaps (and no one has said this so I’m not pointing the finger here) we would second guess all we know if such information came to light (after all, if there’s hidden knowledge, why would it be hidden unless it would cause harm to the cause of Christ or God OR would it enable us to turn this information into something less than honorable)? – or maybe that’s just my own ‘slippery slope’ paranoia.

I don’t believe we should be blind sheep, but I also think it’s (potentially) a dangerous road to contemplate things that frankly aren’t in our purview to contemplate – I trust God, I trust His Word, and I trust God made us with the abilities to understand the knowledge He shared with us (for our own good) and anything beyond that, despite good intentions I’m sure, and with all due respect, feels a little reckless to me. Ok, let me have it.. :)

  24. poohpity says:

I happen to agree with you, johnnycool. I fully believe as we have seen in scripture there are things to wondrous for us to know or even appreciate. I am totally glad there are things that God has chosen to hide and I am perfectly sure that if it were in our best interest it would not be hidden because God knows us so very well. We have seen what a little power will do to people and it corrupts down to the bone. Pride springs out from anyone who thinks they hold a higher place with God than others and God would not give something as beautiful as some of His secrets to a person who has not earned His trust. Who knows they might turn into a television evangelist wanting everyone to pay them for their new found knowledge, lol. :-)
