As we think together about how our Lord suffered in our behalf, let’s reflect again, as thoughtfully and reverently as we can, about what he was suffering.
In Jesus’ sin offering and sacrificial death for us… as he drank the cup giving to him by his Father… do we know what was in the cup (Luke 22:42)? Was it the cup of his Father’s wrath? Or was it the full cup of suffering— the ultimate consequence of our rebellion…so that we could hear the Lamb say, “Father forgive them… they don’t know what they are doing?”
How much is to be risked or gained by wondering whether the cup Jesus drank for us was the full measure of the blind fear and rage of our rebellion— so that our God could show us how much he loves us, and what he is willing to forgive?
