The Sign of the Cross

DSC01107When Jesus was crucified, he suffered under signage that bothered the religious leaders of Israel. Pilate the Roman governor of Judea had written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” But when the chief priests saw the sign, they objected saying, “Don’t write King of the Jews, but instead, that he said, I am the King of the Jews.” But Pilate said, “I have written what I have written.” (John 19:19-22).

P1000399 (1)Peter and Paul later acknowledged in separate statements that if the leaders of Israel had known who Jesus was, they never would have killed him. (Acts 3:17) (1Cor 2:8)

So here’s a question. Thinking back on all that led up to the most revealing and momentous event of human history, was Jesus hated and killed for his claim to be King? Or was he killed for the kind of King he claimed to be?

    “The Sign of the Cross”

An interesting fact I learned of many years ago is that the encampment of the tribes of Israel in the wilderness with the tabernacle at its center was in the shape of the cross.

Jesus’s accused crime from the leaders of Israel was that He claimed to be a king. A crime of sorts against Rome. This was so that Roman justice would crucify Him.

The leaders of Israel was incensed against Jesus because He exposed them to be a corrupted false group of political leaders, not the people God had empowered them to be, and used the Law of Moses to accuse Him of blasphemy.

However the fact will remain that Jesus was killed as a scape goat and sacrifice to God for mankind’s sins. He was killed as an act of God’s will.

This was His purpose in coming.

    30 degrees and clear.

It seems that He may have been killed more for the kind of King He claimed to be.

Even from birth there were those who tried to kill Him not because of His own claims but from the prophesies that a secular king misinterpreted as an earthly king but Jesus claimed His Kingdom was not of this world.

Jesus’ claims were of equality with God who is the King of Kings but the fact remains it was the plan from the foundations of the the world and no one could have stopped it and all mankind was responsible for it. Jesus could have made the choice not to be in that situation at any time but had to finish what was started.

  3. poohpity says:

Steve, respectfully, I think if you read Numbers 2 it is not so factual about the camp being in the shape of a Cross but it seems more like a square or rectangle depending on the size of the tribes. According to Numbers there were three tribes on each of the four sides and then around the tabernacle was the tribe of Levi and when the tabernacle and courtyard was set up in the heart of them all it was more of a rectangular shape. I have heard some teachers say what you said but after reading even if it was logistically or organizationally possible what benefit would it have served being in that shape?

I know in the OT it spoke of the Savior being hung from a tree but not even a Cross was mentioned. That was a Roman means of execution in that era.

  4. oneg2dblu says:

I agree that because it was God’s Will… that Christ not only endured the cross, but acted totally submitted to God in every way.
He did nothing on his own, nor did he speak his mind, but the mind of Him who he continuously served.
All things are orchestrated by God to bring about this end result, “Every knee shall bow and every mouth confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.”

Mart beautiful art work of the crusaders, yet a shameful moment in history for Christians.

One of many shameful moments in history beginning at the cross. Pilate probably being superstitious like everyone else and being in charge of the empire/province may have out of ‘respect’ for anyone calling themselves king or messiah even-and there were many at that time-wrote what he wrote, as he said. “King of the Jews” got himself out of hotwater by avoiding all responsibility for the death of an innocent man.

Yet, it was God’s will that He should suffer for all sins and rise again. How unlike popular thinking of a kingdom that comes to rule by force rather than as a suffering servant. At the time, the Jews (not all but most it seems) disliked intensely Jesus’ notion of a kingdom that accepts rule/law breakers, indigents, outcasts, etc. It was their hard heartedness that kept them from seeing Him. Yet God used their failure to bring about the redemption of the whole world! Marvelous!
I guess I have to be in agreement with Pilate on this one at the time. Yet today we are privy to a worldview that could not be seen at the time, except by those who were chosen by God at the time to witness and then share with us the historical basis of our faith.

We now can “see” through opened eyes and the witness of truth in scripture-if we are reading correctly or have had our eyes opened-just how worthy Jesus was to carry the cross; by being the Savior of all mankind.

The Jews were deeply troubled by him, I think there was yes a deeper truth stirring inside them that they may have been afraid to face, God moving in His mysterious ways at the time. Fear often produces anger.

Back to the Crusades, thinking they were doing God a favor by conquering their ‘foes’ is really nothing new. We see it in the news everyday. You’d think we’d know better by now, wouldn’t we?

  6. jeff1 says:

God knew differently that history would repeat itself and man would once again turn away from Him.

I wish I could say I never doubted God but the truth is I had my moments. I need Jesus today just as much as Israel did back then.

Joyce you say fear often produces anger and I will go further and tell you that fear produces hate which turns to violence.

I think it was you Steve who said Heaven is a state of mind and I can tell you so is hell.

God saved me from myself for faith has been my gift from God.

  7. street says:

was Jesus hated and killed for his claim to be King? Or was he killed for the kind of King he claimed to be?

neither He was killed in fulfillment of the Scripture and the foreknowledge of God in a covenant freely entered into with abraham and promises freely given to adam and david. this did not nullify their guilt, but it did nullify sin and death.

even at His trials, it came up that He was accused of being a “king” and the “Son of God,” which made pilot very uncomfortable since he did not know the truth and had seen and heard many strange things. yes these events were strange and hard as the teaching of Christ and like nicodemus we should have known these things. Thank God for His Holy Spirit Who reveals Christ!

  8. saled says:

He was killed for the kind of king he claimed to be.

Maybe Pilate insisted on the inscription to add insult to the Jews. Maybe Pilate agreed that such a man could not be a real king.

This man was the son of a carpenter. He touched lepers. He walked with sinners. He sat with women with bad reputations. He owned nothing and encouraged others to give away their possessions. Yes, I think that Jesus was killed because of the kind of king he claimed to be.

When Peter and Paul say that if the leaders had known who he was that they would not have killed him, to me this shows a change in their concept of what kind of king they were looking for.

  9. jeff1 says:

If I look at how King’s live in this world Jesus was controversial for He lived an ordinary life yet there was nothing ordinary about Him.

He knew He was to be killed for it was necessary for God’s will to be fulfilled.

Jesus was a very different King to any other for He would be resurrected and sit at His father’s side and rule for evermore.

Just like many did not get it back then, many today do not understand that Jesus will restore His Kingdom on earth as is foretold for the end times and evil will be no more.

When men fight wars they create more wars and that is why it has to be God’s way so that the end of evil will mean the end of evil and like minded people can work for the good of His Kingdom in Heaven and Earth. God speed the day.

  10. street says:

What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?

Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.

and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are,

I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”

What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.

verses that came up when searching for “nullify.”

For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

  11. poohpity says:

The law was accomplished or fulfilled in Jesus Christ and with His blood shed brought the new covenant. The kingdom of God was brought to the earth and walked in the flesh among us also in Jesus Christ.

  12. SFDBWV says:

I am not sure where Mart may expect this topic to go. It is an easily answered question as to why Jesus was killed, but as to what motive His accusers had will be forever speculative.

Clearly their accusations are the means by which Jesus was crucified in fulfillment of God’s design.

What was God’s part in the setup of having Jesus killed? Did He simply let matters go forward without interacting or did God see to every detail?

Such a debate has no end, just as the endless debate of whether or not Judas had a real choice in the betrayal of his friend and our Lord.

“If”; what a useless word. “If” His accusers would have known Jesus was God on earth, what would their reaction have been? Again purely speculative to how we view them.

What we should be about is how we who know that Jesus is Lord view ourselves and our relationship to Him.

When we pray do we come before Him in humble respect or do we try and debate with Him as though we were talking to the guy in charge not the Author of life and Creator of the universe.

Do we try and impress Him with our knowledge of His Book or do we surrender to His omnipotence?

The “Book” is a collection of examples we are to learn from. What have we learned about who killed Christ and why?

Are we not also guilty of driving the nails into His hands?

33 degrees under a starry sky with a nearly full moon looking down on us.

    Steve

  13. jeff1 says:

I can speculate that if I had lived back then I would have been on Christ’s side but even Jesus’s disciples let Him down and Peter wept afterwards.

The Bible brings home to us the difficulties that followers of Christ where up against. I am not any better than those followers and I wrestle with God daily because I often think my way is best.

The truth is I am not that good at surrendering my all for the self in me gets in the way.

To answer your question Steve I believe I am also guilty of driving the nails into His hands because I am not without sin and needs a Savior and the truth of the gospel is that Christ died because I could not save myself anymore than Israel could.

  14. poohpity says:

I do not think that knowing His inspired word impresses God but it does show Him that we want to grow in our knowledge of Him. Just like whenever one is attracted to anyone they want to learn all about them and God has given us that “Book” to do so. That “Book” gives us a basis or foundation so when we hear anyone teaching we can compare fact to fiction so as not to get caught up with everything that goes around in movies, TV shows, from the pulpit, in books written by human authors and by vain philosophies of this world.

I believe not that I drove those nails into His hands but it was for me that Jesus allowed those nails to be driven into His body, suffocated, His body whipped beyond human recognition, hung naked, persecuted and hated to show how great His love was for mankind. Just to have a relationship with us even those who turn their backs on Him or care nothing about knowing Him. Since we were not there at the time we are allowed the privilege because of the “Book” in reading the eye witness accounts of others experiences with our Mighty God.

  15. poohpity says:

Israel rejected God as their king they wanted a human king and God gave them what they wanted (1 Sam 8:7 NLT) but with the warning of how bad that would actually be. So when the real King of Israel came to earth those who’s pride wanted the places of honor did not recognize that kind of King or His Kingdom.

  16. poohpity says:

Even back farther God let Moses know that they would ask for a king. Deut 17:14

  17. poohpity says:

They rejected God as their king then and when Jesus came they rejected Him again.

  18. poohpity says:

So Pilate the one who asked “what is truth?” actually wrote the truth and had it placed on the Cross above the head of Jesus.

  19. poohpity says:

I wonder “if” the reason that people do not want God as the king of their lives is because they relate God to earthly kings and their oppressive rule?

  20. refump says:

I read the following in a devotional called “Unlocking the Secrets of the Feasts” by Michael Norton:
More and more facts began to unfold in my research. I was talking further with David Schiller, my Jewish teacher and friend, about what I had learned about the shepherds and the lambs. He amazed me with some more historical insights. He explained that each Jewish family would put the family name around the neck of their lamb that they took to the Temple to be sacrificed. They did this to make sure they received their own lamb back for the Passover dinner. I wondered if there was any significance to this piece of trivia. As I was contemplating this, Schiller pointed out to me a particular object found in most of the paintings of Christ on the cross. There was a small sign at the top of the cross that looked like four letters: “INRI.” I discovered that this was an abbreviation of the sign that Pontius Pilot placed on the cross as seen in John 19:19:

Pilate also wrote an inscription, and put it on the cross. It was written, ‘JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.’

I learned that the letters were the first letters of each of the nouns in the inscription in Latin. I contacted my daughter Ruth, who is very good with Latin, and asked her to show me the inscription in the Latin Vulgate. That confirmed it: “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum” (INRI).

Then Schiller opened my eyes to an incredible observation. Since the inscription had been in three languages — Latin, Greek, and Hebrew — he transliterated it for me from Hebrew to English. I saw before me these words: “Y’Shua HaNatzri V’Melech HaYehudim.” I was absolutely stunned when I took the first letters of each of these words. It spelled “YHVH,” the Tetragrammaton form of the name of God! YHVH and YHWH can be used interchangeably. When this technique of abbreviating is used, the title on the cross in the actual Hebraic script undeniably reveals the name of God. In English, the name is pronounced “Yahweh!”

Just like the Jews put their family name on their lamb for sacrifice at the Temple, God put His name on His Lamb for His family, which includes you and me!

God gave us so many pictures in order that we could understand the magnitude of His loving grace!

  21. poohpity says:

    Wow, ref, just wow! :-)

  22. pegramsdell says:

Thank You Jesus! That’s pretty cool ref! We have The right lamb!

  23. street says:

poo said,”The law was accomplished or fulfilled in Jesus Christ and with His blood shed brought the new covenant.”

there are many things in the law and the prophets that have not taken place yet, but as for removing sin and death from the world in Christ Jesus it is finished. we began in faith so let us continue in faith.

  24. street says:

steve said,”but as to what motive His accusers had will be forever speculative.”

“Doing things for God is the opposite of entering into what God does for you.”

“Utterly cursed is every person who fails to carry out every detail written in the Book of the law.”

“Rule-keeping does not naturally evolve into living by faith, but only perpetuates itself in more and more rule-keeping, a fact observed in Scripture:
“The one who does these things [rule-keeping] continues to live by them.”

living by rules and there hearts were far from Him.

quotes are from The Message Galatians 3

  25. street says:

poo said,”I wonder “if” the reason that people do not want God as the king of their lives is because they relate God to earthly kings and their oppressive rule?”

sin is a much more oppressive ruler.
like trying to keep rules, like building on sand.

Something crazy has happened, for it’s obvious that you no longer have the crucified Jesus in clear focus in your lives. His sacrifice on the cross was certainly set before you clearly enough.

13-14 Christ redeemed us from that self-defeating, cursed life by absorbing it completely into himself. Do you remember the Scripture that says, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”? That is what happened when Jesus was nailed to the cross: He became a curse, and at the same time dissolved the curse. And now, because of that, the air is cleared and we can see that Abraham’s blessing is present and available for non-Jews, too. We are all able to receive God’s life, his Spirit, in and with us by believing—just the way Abraham received it.

  26. poohpity says:

street in response to your 9:46am post; Jesus said, “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish/fulfill their purpose.” Matt 5:17 NLT

  27. poohpity says:

street, are not earthly kings sinners? That was not the point I was trying to make. I was wondering if people compare God’s Kingship to earthly kings and rulers and that is why they find it difficult to be submissive and trust His authority because they have been burned so to speak with those in authority over us in this world?

When a person has been abused by their father they find it hard to trust God as a Father. That is what I was trying to get across.

  28. jeff1 says:

From my own experience I would say that I was taught more on the Crucifixion of Christ and how it saved me than I was ever taught about the Resurrection.

I see Christ more as the Lamb than as the King. I would agree that earthly rulers are very different to Jesus and that is why many find it hard to trust authorities.

I, myself, find, as I get older that people let you down and indeed that I let myself down proving that Jesus is the answer to my Salvation for who else would I turn too in my hours of need!

  29. street says:

dear poo i understand what you are saying, my point was more to come. like the lady who when she was buried wanted to be buried with a fork in her hand. it was a sign to those who knew her. she wanted to get across that more was to come, like saving your fork, there is desert afterwards. it’s just that new forks will be provided too.
it was a great way to convey hope in life even when separated from the body.

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

  30. street says:

the law and the prophets tell of a second coming, rapture, judgement, and a really nice place to live. from what i understand this life is available now to all. the thing is it’s difficult if not impossible for the world to see it. it is seen by faith when looking beyond the horizon. this light beyond the horizon is clearly seen in Christ.

  31. pegramsdell says:

I think the real turning point for me was when I finally actually heard what people were saying: Jesus lives! I was shocked! It changed everything…..I knew from then on that all of it was true! And I could accept that He really is the King of Kings! :)

  32. street says:

jeff said,” From my own experience I would say that I was taught more on the Crucifixion of Christ and how it saved me than I was ever taught about the Resurrection. ”

think about this jeff a resurrected life that bypasses the cross is no life at all, but the same darkness and sin as before. God in His infinite mercy and patients cleanses us from sin by the cross and gives us His Spirit to begin an eternal relationship of life. One that is based in two free wills that conform to Holiness that God provides. a sinner and a Holy God can be yoked together in Christ because they are in agreement with God on sin and it must die. no longer to walk in it. we have not come to the point of shedding blood in our faith, but the process of growing up into Him has been born into us. each one unique and precious in His sight.

  33. street says:

jeff said,”I see Christ more as the Lamb than as the King.”

“as I get older that people let you down and indeed that I let myself down”
when you see Jesus behind the stories of the bible and your circumstances you will begin to see not only a King but God. the good soil hangs onto the Word planted into it and produces fruit.

  34. poohpity says:

street, all I can say is “what?”. Help me to understand where in the OT that it speaks of the second coming when the majority was speaking about Jesus’ first coming. Then aren’t we thinking about, “So here’s a question. Thinking back on all that led up to the most revealing and momentous event of human history, was Jesus hated and killed for his claim to be King? Or was he killed for the kind of King he claimed to be?” and that has to do with the second coming how?

We have been saying that the kind of King that Jesus claimed to be was God the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. The word does not produce fruit the Holy Spirit does.

  35. street says:

Help me to understand where in the OT that it speaks of the second coming when the majority was speaking about Jesus’ first coming.

well go to the account when Jesus was handed the scroll and read from it. He said this has come true in your hearing. then go read what follows after He stopped that is future.

The Spirit of the Lord [a]God is upon me,
Because the Lord has anointed me
    To bring good news to the [b]afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
    To proclaim liberty to captives
    And [c]freedom to prisoners;
    2
To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord

He stopped here what follows will happen when He comes to the next time.

    And the day of vengeance of our God;
    To comfort all who mourn,
    3
To grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
The oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
So they will be called [d]oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

  36. street says:

dear poo i am thinking about two goats on the day of atonement. one the lot fell on and one released into the wilderness. we are the the goat who was released into the wilderness. thinking, like Jesus when He went into the wilderness. it doesn’t look like much of a Kingdom now, but i long and mourn for it to come. i wait patiently though sometimes i grow impatient. thats where i am at and have been thinking about.

thinking the saints are the fruit God is looking for, and when they are ripe He sends forth the sickle. not a grim ending if you are looking to Christ like stephen.

  37. street says:

and that has to do with the second coming how?

thinking we live in the wilderness now. a Kingdom with in a kingdom.

  38. jeff1 says:

I find myself in the wilderness and yet I am more sure of God than I ever was in all my lifetime! It is a strange wilderness for He seems so far away and yet so near. There is much sadness in my wilderness and I feel great pain for those around me who do not understand my God as I do. Yet I know God will do no harm to them but wants for them to know that He is a good God. They will get to know Him as time is on God’s side and that is what God has that I do not time. Time is a healer and it is God who has eternity! I was once like them and could not be told but God opened my eyes and He will open their’s when suits His purpose! It is up to Him, it is Him who reigns, but I still see the Lamb, but He is now the King, and that is what matters that He reigns. Nothing is as it seems!

  39. poohpity says:

street the scapegoat, the one released into the wilderness, that bared the blame for sin is Jesus as well as the one sacrificed. Jesus fulfilled all the sacrifices of the OT which were only temporary and His was the final complete one for all eternity. There are plenty of times in the NT that speaks of the second coming but you said something different in the 12:39pm comment.

Don’t you think that when we accept Jesus we are brought out of the wilderness and into the light of the Kingdom of God? Now whether one lives like they are is a different story. Live like one who is in the wilderness or live like we trust God who reigns in our hearts now.

  40. street says:

poo are you saying you will never have to cry out to Dad ever again. don’t think we will be crying anymore in the Kingdom, maybe here in the wilderness.

  41. street says:

are you saying barabbas is Christ. doesn’t make sense.

  42. street says:

all receive grace. yet the children of God receive grace forever.

  43. street says:

was Jesus hated and killed for his claim to be King? Or was he killed for the kind of King he claimed to be?

He was killed because He was the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. man was the instrument and the moral agent that accomplished the will of God. He is also the sacrifice that brings life not death to man. no other sacrifice could accomplish this.

  44. street says:

you are right jeff we know more about the crucifixion then the resurrection. i think He wanted it that way. we need to understand we need to take up our cross or we can not follow Him. we keep getting in the way of the Spirit of Christ.

  45. street says:

i think we are like barrabas in that we deserved death. like the tenth leopard turned and returned and said thank you. He asks us to take up the cross too.

    the sign of the cross.
the power and wisdom of God.

  46. poohpity says:

No street I was not saying we will never cry out to God while we live in the world and yes I believe when we get to heaven there will be no more tears. The point is we know there is a God to cry out to. Using analogies like the wilderness one has to define what they mean by the wilderness. You used the scapegoat going into the wilderness away from the camp and said that was us and that is not correct.

I do not understand the other points you were making and how did Barabbas fit into this? You have totally lost this simple mind of mine to understand what your point is. Accusing me of saying things I did not say also blows my mind and defeats my ability to have a clear conversation when I have to ask myself what on earth are you talking about. I am in the wilderness in trying to understand.

  47. street says:

it’s ok poo i am still trying to understand too. just thinking every story every person every word is important. they all will Glorify God.

we are barabbas. he received grace and we do too. the question is what do we do now? continue in grace through faith? the one who is pardoned much, loves much. isn’t that what God wanted in the first place, love?

yes loving in Spirit and Truth in the wilderness is a battle. oh i forgot he did not leave us orphans in the wilderness.

oh i understand too my thoughts are all over the place. makes me wonder where i’ll be next. mart’s blog keeps it interesting.

  48. street says:

this sounds like a place for the armor of God.

    Ephesians 6:10-18

  49. poohpity says:

street, if you being the author of what you write and you do not understand it then why write it because how will we understand if it is not even clear to you?

  50. foreverblessed says:

That of the scapegoat, good to think about, I do believe that as christians we have a wilderness period! Like the Israelites were rescued out of Egypt, the dominion of darkness Col 1:13, by a miracle, through the sea, and then the wilderness.

That wilderness time is for our good, that we are rooted and grounded in Jesus.

(This is of topic, so you can skip it:
I have had teachings about the scapegoat in my former churchlife that it was Satan, I have told this in my new evangelical church, and people just got very angry about it.
Both goats pictured Jesus! Point made, no discussions
What the old church said, is that the Holy Days picture historica happenings:
Lev 23:5 the passover Christ sacrifice
The Days of unleavened bread, the New Life in the risen Christ, sin taken out
The waving of the sheaf: Christ presented in heaven after His resurrection Lev 23:9-14
    Pentecost, the Holy Spirit given
And then start the autumn feasts which have not yet occurred.
When they are compared to the happenings in Revelation 19 and 20,
The Feast of Trumpets Lev 23:23 could be the second coming of Christ, Rev 19:11-16, 1 Thess 4:16 with the trumpet call of God!

Then we have the day of Atonement, Lev 23:26-32, Lev 16:1-34, what does it picture?
Now here it comes: in Revelation 20, an angel comes and seized the dragon, and lockes him up- The goat sent into the wilderness??
If you do not agree, do not get angry, anyway, I have thoughts about it, maybe this is one of the meanings of the scapegoat, maybe not. We being it, could also be true. The bible verses have many layers.

To finish the prophecies: the Feast of Tabernacles, Lev 23:33-44, could be the thousand year reign, Rev 20:4-6
(or rather it could be one of the meanings, it could also picture our new risen life in Christ, right now, living in His Rest)

And then the Last Great Day the eighth day Lev 23:39, that is my favourite Day, the eighth day, picturing the fact that after 7 days, a perfect cycle there is always an eighth day, a new beginning, also Jesus stood up on that Great Day of the Feast, which that eighth day is also called, The Last Great Day,
John 7:37 Jesus called with a load voice, as if calling into the future, to all humans ever lived, Rev 20:11
“If a man is thirsty, Let Him come to me and drink.
Who ever believers in me, as the scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

That Last Great Day portrayes to me such a hopefull and glorious future, with Jesus there is always a Calling: Come to Me!

  51. SFDBWV says:

There is a saying, or if you will, a belief, that there are no coincidences only occurrences.

I always so enjoy those pearls of knowledge that are opened to our understanding relevant to Scripture. Thank you “Refump” for the enlightenment.

I have listened to, read and copied some of so many of such deep things about how the “Feasts” the “Law” and “prophesies” fold into one another that it for me is impossible to remember them all. But I still always see them all as little pieces of a puzzle that becomes obvious when the pieces begin to fit together.

When you start to see the “bigger picture” of the puzzle, the picture is always about Jesus and His purpose in being born into the world. The cross!

The cross represents His death and resurrection. His death represents His purpose in being born. His resurrection shows His authority and power over everything we know, even death.

The sign “of” the cross and as Refump showcased the sign “on” the cross, show that Jesus is Lord.

God on earth, the second part of the Trinity and who He said He was.

It is as Peg said “Jesus lives”.

54 degrees and a little wet this morning. The hummingbirds returned yesterday. Little marvels of God’s creation and for me a sure sign that winter is finally over.

I don’t know, Mart, but a good question. I would tend to think the kind of king for sure, since after all, many did want to make Jesus their Bread King, but he wouldn’t be king on their terms, hence his reticence in making known that he was the Messiah.

I think to this day the world would accept Jesus, you could say as one of their own, if he would be king according to what the world holds dear. Which includes brutal strength and power often at the expense of others. But Jesus’s kingdom is different, and makes no sense at all, not on the grid of the power structures of this world, like who has nuclear capability, etc., etc.

But that’s my thought for the moment, but a good question to think about. Hopefully we in Jesus will understand what his kingship is in this world, and how we as his subjects are to live that out, in all love, even to our enemies.

  53. SFDBWV says:

Foreverblessed (Rita) your comment must have taken a lot of time to put together this morning, thank you for your effort.

I learned a long time ago that in order to understand “Revelation” you need a good solid understanding of the Feasts, the Law and the structure of worship given in Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Numbers and even Genesis and all of the exposure given in prophesy.

This to me is why the Book of Revelation is so confusing to so many, they are not expert in all of the rest of Scripture.

My first wife did not begin her journey into Christianity until her last months of life. Immediately she began asking me about things found in Revelation and just as quick I told her one can’t feast on meat until weaned by milk.

The opening up of Scripture is always exciting and always points to Jesus of Nazareth as being Lord of Lords, King of Kings, the Messiah, our Savior and gateway to the Father.

There will be a day when we will all see the hidden truths behind all of Scripture as well as all the truths behind all of the circumstances in our lives and we will look into the eyes of Christ and say, “Yes, yes it all makes sense, I see it now clearly.” “Thank you Lord.”

  54. jeff1 says:

I agree Street that God wants us to focus on the Crucifixion so that we can lead our lives pleasing to Him and He can use us to bring those who are still seeking Him.

Our tendency is to want to live with the Resurrected Jesus but it is not where God can use us.

The Resurrected Jesus is our prize for running the race diligently but not perfectly. Other helpers encourage and inspire us when we get weary of it all. I must keep reminding myself that it is for the greater good of mankind as Jesus Himself did when He asked His Father to take the cup from Him.

My son who is into physical fitness keeps telling me if there is no pain there is no gain and this world is very much like that.

When I let self pity in I keep disqualifying myself but God does not give up on me for He knows what I am made of and He will always be with me because I am His and no power on earth can come between that which is God’s.

It is Satan who messes with my head and it is my weakness but God give me an earthly father whose head could not be messed with and He taught me about God. What has happened in my Country I know my father was right because He was putting God first in His decision making and saying what was right and not what his culture and religion dictated.

I allowed my culture and religion to dictate my beliefs but my father knew I was not putting God first and that is what is wrong in my Country when I do not put God first I allow Satan access and cause unnecessary suffering and claim it was God’s will but it is not it is man’s will but I blinded myself to the truth.

I made assumptions about God which agreed with my cultural and religious beliefs and created in my mind that this was His will. I said before that my father being the much more intelligent man understood what it was to put God first where I did not.

It is God who understands the differences in us and uses us according to our strengths and makes allowances for our weaknesses as He is a merciful father who accepts me as I am.

In man’s eyes I am like the old horse who should be thrown into the knackers yard but in God’s eyes I am still His child whom He never gives up on!

Christ died for those who could not save themselves for the righteous are already blameless before God.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
    I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
    And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
    The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
    I have already come;
‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
    Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
    Then when we’d first begun.

Amazing grace, How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
    I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.

dear poo, it’s not that i don’t understand what i am thinking about. it’s just hard to articulate all the thoughts together. when it comes down to it, i need to leave my thoughts behind, they just muddy God’s Word. now i understand i am allowed to ask Dad for clarification and help. He will not disappoint his children. the Lord is my Shepard, I shall not want. the 23 Psalm came up after the armor.

  56. poohpity says:

The very ones who said they served God were the very ones who objected to what Pilate hung above Jesus’s head. If they knew who He was would they still have done it as Paul and Peter suggested? I am not sure because some of the religious leaders did know who Jesus was but as others have suggested it would have had to happen in someway or some form or fashion whether they knew who he was or not.

I do not remember in one place that Jesus claimed to be a earthly king but rather said that was not the purpose He came for but did claim to be a servant also explaining that His Kingdom was not of this world.

Earthly kings seem to force their wills on their subjects and even referring to them as subjects shows the state of mind they cling to but following Jesus was an open invitation. People wanted to first follow because of the miracles He did and they wanted their needs satisfied but some followed because they believed in who He is. It seems even those who followed knowing who He is still did not understand why He was letting all that happened happen until after.

It was with hindsight as it seems most prophecies are realized and the gift of the Holy Spirit that opened their eyes as to why things had to be as they were.

  57. poohpity says:

street, you write some really thought provoking things and other times I want so bad to understand but I get lost in the different directions. I also find it hard to translate what is in my heart into words that will not be misunderstood and often I fail but we can never give up. I think God will make all things clearer one day to all those who seek and search for Him. I know that you are one of those.

  58. street says:

poo said,”I do not remember in one place that Jesus claimed to be a earthly king but rather said that was not the purpose He came for but did claim to be a servant also explaining that His Kingdom was not of this world.”

i do remember Jesus said he had nowhere to lay his head. in other words. no home. in today’s read in our daily bread i noticed that he went away to receive a Kingdom and return to His “home” His home is with mankind on earth!!! He is coming HOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now i understand why it is so important to get everything ready.

My husband also really received his salvation towards the end of his life as well Steve. 3 months before he died (3 years ago) I spent with him almost 24 hours a day. He had divorced me 10 years earlier. In the end, he truly loved The Lord himself for himself. Praise God! We read the bible together and related in a way we never did during our 24 years married. I’m so glad we had that time together.
Can’t wait to see him again. :)

I’ve been thinking about your post Mart for a few days now, and have enjoyed all the conversations also.

What came to mind the first time I read it was “could this possibly be about grace?” The obvious answer is yes, but I’m finding more and more grace in Jesus’ message that is spilling over into my views and opinions regarding the culture and other Christian’s views. We are all in the race, yet the MESSAGE persists without apology. God is good and faithful since the beginning of time and today. Still learning more. It’s good.

  61. street says:

joycemb said,” “could this possibly be about grace?”

made think of another twist in the story. remember the denying taking up the cross and “following” Jesus?

in the 23 Psalm “Surely goodness and lovingkindness will “follow” me all the days of my life,

we are surrounded in front and behind by the love, He really is the Alpha and the Omega.

  62. oneg2dblu says:

Sorry to expand on the scapegoat thread, but, am thinking that either goat was truly innocent, without blemish, one sacrificed and the other, the scapegoat, given freedom.
In the case of Barnabas however, first there is no question about his guilt or innocence, for he was a convicted killer.
Second, his undeserved freedom was not any act of God, or the Grace of God enacted, but it was the choice of those worldly crowds.
So, I guess Christ would qualify to be either lamb, the sacrificed one, or the released one.
Sacrificed first for our sins, and then, released from the sentence or power of death through the resurrection.
The whole scene of that crowd demanding of the Cross for the innocent Christ and the release of the guilty Barnabas, was only to placate the unbelieving masses as once a year event of a pardoning by the people.
It also gave pilot his hand washing moment, and Christ his fulfilling of prophesy.
In that one event God gave evil another chance, and also held accountable his only Son.
How can we wrap our minds around such events as God ordained, when we see evil released and righteousness also suffer for it?
Oh yeah, we know the rest of the story…

Better yet, we know the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, which gives us the faith to believe and a broader divine eternal view.

As ODB 4-26-16 says, the past is written there for us.

  63. jeff1 says:

It is a fallen world and as such there are both unrighteous and righteous living in it.

The difficulty for me as a believer living in this world is that in God’s eyes I am sinless as I have accepted Jesus Crucifixion as the price paid for my sins but to a non believer that means nothing for they do not share my faith.

In the flesh I let God down because I often fail to be what God wants me to be but that does not change that God has forgiven me and my Salvation is still a gift from God.
The Cross is the evidence of that.

How I manage to survive now depends on how much I look to God and do the right thing or fail to look to God and do the wrong thing.

I am blessed in knowing a generous God who never stops loving me and has given me a place in Heaven though at times I behave no better than a non believer.

I can face this world with all its horrors knowing God is by my side from here to eternity while many suffer alone unaware of God, some because they choose for various reasons not to believe, some because of false teaching and others through no teaching at all.

Even faith itself is a gift from God and I know that because I had encouragement from my earthly father who lived his life more righteous than I did and I believe is being rewarded in Heaven for doing so.

I am thankful to God for saving me from Hell because I have had a taste of it every time I have put myself first and God last.

I have to add that my sins are mainly of omission but sins against God just the same.

When I am aware that Jesus died for me personally because I am a sinner then I want to give the same chance to others who are not yet where I am in my walk with Jesus.

I am not a lone runner and there are many in front of me and many lagging behind! God help us all!

  64. SFDBWV says:

I was reminded this morning of Acts 26:24 KJV whereby Festus said that so much learning has driven Paul insane.

The subject matter we undertake, while being enjoyable to “think about” or attempt to discuss, has been studied for as long as it has been written.

I wonder sometimes if it is truth we seek or conformation as to what we want to make of it.

I speak of course of all our subject matter, not just “The Sign of the Cross”

If we learn anything from the reading of Scripture it should be that it is multilayered. Where it can mean different things to different people, depending upon their particular need at that particular time, it can also mean different things from God.

Jesus the suffering King, Jesus the conquering King.
The Kingdom of Heaven here and now in our hearts, the Kingdom of God with Christ on the throne.

Ironically if Jesus had been the conquering King they expected the Messiah to be instead of the suffering sacrificial King He came to be, they would have been the first to receive judgement. Instead they found grace even for their denial of Him. (Luke 23:24 KJV)

Study away, just don’t let it drive you mad, settle on your faith and then “stand fast”.

    Be at peace today.

  65. SFDBWV says:

    Oops Luke 23:34 KJV

    Steve

  66. poohpity says:

    I imagine that anyone like Festus who does not follow the Lord sees those who study the scripture as insane because we believe as Paul did. Left in context this is how Acts 26:24 unfolds;

But God has protected me right up to this present time so I can testify to everyone, from the least to the greatest. I teach nothing except what the prophets and Moses said would happen— 23 that the Messiah would suffer and be the first to rise from the dead, and in this way announce God’s light to Jews and Gentiles alike.”

24 Suddenly, Festus shouted, “Paul, you are insane. Too much study has made you crazy!”

25 But Paul replied, “I am not insane, Most Excellent Festus. What I am saying is the sober truth.

I guess each one of would have to think very deeply about your statement Steve; “I wonder sometimes if it is truth we seek or conformation as to what we want to make of it.” Sadly so many tend to make of it what they want to make of it.

  67. remarutho says:

    Good Morning All —

Have pondered the question, Mart, and as many here have concluded one way or another — we will not fathom how God moves history in our mortal minds.

It is grand to think about Him and His super-abundant grace. Also, how God moves hearts — I think of Moses and Pharaoh — David and Saul — Jesus and Barabbas standing before Pilate and the people — Barnabas and Paul, one going to Cyprus and the other to Derbe on account of disagreement.

The kingdom of God advances no matter what the opposition. It is not always good vs. evil. Sometimes the sharp disagreements are among people of good will.

We can decide what we think or believe — but as for knowing — not so much. Am reminded of that little psalm David wrote:

    O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty;
Nor do I involve myself in great matters,
Or in things too difficult for me.
    Surely I have composed and quieted my soul;
Like a weaned child rests against his mother,
My soul is like a weaned child within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord
From this time forth and forever.

    Blessings all day,
    Maru

Faith is trusting God and I have fallen flat on my face many times because of not trusting Him. If God has taught me one anything it is that He is in charge.

I was sent this in an e-mail. It was written by a 15 year old Minnesota Kid.

Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
    Becomes a federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
    That’s no offense; it’s a freedom scene…
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.
For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all…
In silence alone we must meditate,
God’s name is prohibited by the State..
We’re allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks…
They’ve outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
We can select a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the ‘unwed daddy,’ our Senior King.
It’s ‘inappropriate’ to teach right from wrong,
We’re taught that such ‘judgments’ do not belong…
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles…
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It’s scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school’s a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take!
    Amen.

  69. joycemb says:

“Was Jesus hated and killed for his claim to be King? Or was he killed for the kind of King he claimed to be?”

From God Is Enough, by Hannah Whitall Smith

The law says, This do and you will live.
The gospel says, Live, and then you will do.

The law says, Pay me what you owe me.
The gospel says, I freely forgive you everything.

The law says, Make yourself a new heart and a new spirit.
The gospel says, A new heart will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.

The law says, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
The gospel says, Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His son to be the propitiation for our sins.

The law says, Cursed is every one who doesn’t continue in all things written in the book of the law to do them.
The gospel says, Blessed is the man whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

The law says, The wages of sin is death.
The gospel says, The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Yep I’d say this is the kind of King he claimed to be.

This was recorded by Elvis whose gospel music says more about the man than his life did.

    Where No One Stands Alone

Once I stood in the night
    With my head bowed low
In the darkness as black as could be
And my heart felt alone and I cried
“Oh Lord, Don’t hide your face from me

Like a king I may live in a palace so tall
With great riches to call my own
    But I don’t know a thing
    In this whole wide world
    That’s worse than being alone
Hold my hand all the way, every hour every day
From here to the great unknown

Take my hand, let me stand
    Where no one stands alone

Take my hand, let me stand
    Where no one stands alone

  74. joycemb says:

Here’s another gem from God Is Enough:

    The law demands holiness
    The gospel gives holiness.

    The law says, Do
    The gospel says, Done.

The law extorts the unwilling service of a slave.
The gospel wins the loving service of a son and a friend.

The law makes blessings the result of obedience.
The gospel makes obedience the result of blessings.

The law places the day of rest at the end of the week’s work.
The gospel places it at the beginning.

    The law says, If.
    The gospel says, Therefore.

The law was given for the restraint of the old man.
The gospel was given to bring Liberty to the new man.

Under the law, salvation was wages.
Under the gospel, salvation is a gift.

I love this:-). It’s succinct yet so powerful for me. I love it.
It’s my birthday and I am so thankful to know Jesus today.

  81. jeff1 says:

Peter and Paul acknowledge that Israel’s leaders do not recognize that Jesus is who He says He is and that is why they want the sign to say ‘I am the King of the Jews’.

History repeats itself and today many do not see Jesus as the King He is.

I was blessed to have been raised in a Church that focused on Christ while many strayed to false teaching.

If I have learned anything in life it is that you cannot force your faith on anyone and I know myself that no one could have forced their’s on me for it was God who brought me to my knees to accept that ‘I am a sinner saved by grace’.

To my thinking Grace covers ignorance for when I was wayward God did not leave me in my ignorance and if He did not leave me in my ignorance why should He leave others in their’s

It has taken me a lifetime to realize that I thought I knew God while the truth is I knew about God.

Getting to know God is a slow and painful process for some more than others. For me it is slow and painful because of my waywardness.

I thought by keeping the rules it would make me a better person but instead it made me a ‘bitter’ person. I did not like the ‘bitter’ person I had become and long to be the ‘better’ person.

God is full of surprises for instead of finding a God who would judge me for my bitterness He is changing me instead.

It is painful because it means instead of me making excuses for my failures I have to admit they are my failings but when I admit them to God He strengths me so that I find it becomes easier.

God is the surprising one because He is so much more intelligent than I yet instead of Lording it over me He wants me to grow in His likeness.

    To God Be The Glory

    How can I say thanks
for all the things you have done for me
    Things so undeserved
Yet you gave to proved your love for me
And the voices of a million angels
    Could not express my gratitude
All that I am and ever hope to be
I owe it all to Thee

    (Chorus)
    To God be the glory
    To God be the glory
    To God be the glory
For the things He has done
With His blood, He has saved me
With His power, He has raised me
    To God be the Glory
For the things He has done

    (Bridge)
Just let me live my life
Let it be pleasing, Lord to Thee
    Should I gain any praise,
    Let it go to Calvary.

With His blood, He has saved me
With His power, He has raised me
    To God be the Glory
For the things He has done

  82. poohpity says:

They thought they could be rid of this kind of King but because He was who He claimed to be His rule is eternal and everlasting.

    Let all that I am praise the Lord;
with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.
    2
    Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.
    3
    He forgives all my sins
    and heals all my diseases.
    4
    He redeems me from death
and crowns me with love and tender mercies.
    5
He fills my life with good things.
My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

    6
    The Lord gives righteousness
and justice to all who are treated unfairly.

    7
He revealed his character to Moses
and his deeds to the people of Israel.
    8
The Lord is compassionate and merciful,
slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
    9
He will not constantly accuse us,
    nor remain angry forever.
    10
    He does not punish us for all our sins;
he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.
    11
For his unfailing love toward those who fear him
is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
    12
He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.
    13
The Lord is like a father to his children,
tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
    14
    For he knows how weak we are;
he remembers we are only dust.
    15
    Our days on earth are like grass;
like wildflowers, we bloom and die.
    16
The wind blows, and we are gone—
as though we had never been here.
    17
But the love of the Lord remains forever
    with those who fear him.
His salvation extends to the children’s children
    18
of those who are faithful to his covenant,
of those who obey his commandments!

    19
    The Lord has made the heavens his throne;
from there he rules over everything.

    20
    Praise the Lord, you angels,
you mighty ones who carry out his plans,
listening for each of his commands.
    21
Yes, praise the Lord, you armies of angels
who serve him and do his will!
    22
Praise the Lord, everything he has created,
    everything in all his kingdom.

Let all that I am praise the Lord.

  83. SFDBWV says:

Don’t really have much time, but was struck with the thought; did Jesus ever lay claim to being a king?

Reading on in Luke 23:3 KJV I see that Pilate ask Jesus if he were the king of the Jews and Jesus only said “Thou sayest it.”
And in John 18:33-38 KJV the conversation between Pilate and Jesus, Jesus asks Pilate if this question comes from him or from His (Jesus’) accusers and then says “Thou sayest that I am a king.” “To this end was I born and to this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”

Jesus is saying that His kingdom is not of this world or else His servants would come and fight for Him.

To me there is a tremendous amount of subject matter contained in that statement.

Many have indeed fought for Jesus’ kingdom especially if you consider His kingdom to be His Church or His earthly body. They have fought with sword and with *His* sword “the Word”.

Certainly His claim to bear witness to the truth is in bearing witness to the Father and to His ultimate purpose to be the sacrifice the Father demands.

No earthly army nor heavenly host were to interfere with that purpose.

Yet without both fighting earthly battles and spiritual battles for Him this world would be a very different place as we see it spiraling towards that void today. Once His Church is removed from this world then it will be ripe for the judgement that will follow along with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords returning with His clouds of glory. Those clouds being we His followers as well as His heavenly host to reign and rule.

It is not so much the pre-crucified Jesus who lays claim to be king, but rather His written Word.

Just some thoughts about the subject.

    53 degrees and wet.

Steve… All great points you have brought out here.
Was thinking that his only crown was a cuttingly demeaning one, a crown of thorns, placed upon him only to mock his accused position, “King of the Jews.”
The Jews had their king in him, but, they did not know what they had, even today they are blinded to the reality, of “Who,” Christ actually is.
What a bazaar turn of events for us to witness in the word, and in the world today.

If you can’t recognize the true Kingdom of God, which only God can reveal, you probably will never recognize the King either…

  86. street says:

thinking of crowns. a crown of thorns, Jesus received freely as the curse in the garden of eden. the unblemished Lamb of God.

the next crown i think of and can’t rightly place is when no one in heaven or earth can open the scroll. then Jesus steps forward….

I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a book written inside and on the back, sealed up with seven seals. 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the book or to look into it. 4 Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it; 5 and one of the elders *said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”

  87. street says:

it seem to me Jesus could not be found because He was sitting on His Fathers Thrown with Him. They are One.

  88. foreverblessed says:

About the thorn crown, in the garden the curse of the fall was thorns and thistless. In wearing the crown of thorns, Jesus was actually saying: I also bear the curse of your sins, or in other words: the consequences of sin!

    We have a great Redeemer!

And in answering the question of Mart, I guess it is the first, because if people knew really what great King He was, a Shepherd King, not only our King but also our Maker, the One who formed everything, then they would never have killed Him.

  89. street says:

dear forever if your answer they would not have killed Him? how would that look if He was not crucified? would he be able to keep His promises to the patriarchs and to the prophets and to david? His kingdom would have come but there would be no payment or satisfaction for sin. He would have reign in death not life. what would have become of the suffering servant mentioned in scripture?

He freely lay down His life for His Father and to those He loved according to scripture, you could say it was scripted. we are given much freedom within a script. do not use you freedom as a covering for sin. His love mercy and grace are indeed Great!

  90. street says:

in away, i am glad it is scripted, because there is great confidence in knowing He is in control, even when things appear otherwise. oh israel, how long before you are completely satisfied with your redeemer?

  91. jeff1 says:

That is not for me to think about but is between God and Israel but as a servant I am to be an example of what a servant of God should look like.

I should be more concerned with my own weaknesses than others and inspire to do better so that God will be pleased to call me His servant.

I only have to look at this world to see there is always room for improvement in it and I should be a willing participant in improving it.

I so often put my own needs before others so I personally do not find that I can be critical of Israel when I understand her weaknesses are much like my own.

When God is patient with Israel then He is patient with us and for that I am truly thankful.
