A Prayer for a New Day

We recently talked about the fact that there is a logic to faith even as there is also a mystery. According to the disciple who not only walked on water for a few seconds, but later denied that he ever even knew Jesus, faith expresses itself first in a desire and choice for virtue…rather than for something that will leave us full of regret and disgrace (2Peter 2:5-7).

Since it is the beginning of a new day, I’m looking out the window into the darkness of an early morning that has not seen the light. And with Peter’s urging in mind I wonder if we could share together something like…

Father, thank you for letting us breathe the air of a new day. It’s only by your mercy that we’re here. Only by your undeserved kindness have we opened our eyes, to new thoughts, to fresh choices, and to sense in the darkness around us the wonder of your presence.

We are sobered by the thought that, in your wisdom, you might let us waste this day on ourselves, on unworthy motives, on unhealthy thoughts, or on choices that could hurt and discourage those around us. we realize that by the decisions you allow us to make on our own, you have given us the ability to bring disgrace to you and your name.

But we also find hope in the thought that you may give us the chance to use this day for your honor, and for purposes far greater and better than our own.

So, Father, we don’t want to enter the next moment with unworthy thoughts. Please don’t let us live this day as if we made it, or deserve it. Nor do we want to see ourselves as  victims of circumstance, or with a sense of what is owed to us by you or anyone else.

Because of all you have done for us, please help us to use this day to look for opportunities to return kindness for insult, and good for evil– not to try and show ourselves better than others, but to do for anyone you bring into our life as you have so kindly  done for us.

Please don’t let us miss a chance to help those who might be in need of an unexpected smile, a helping hand, or anything else that would quietly draw their attention not to us, but to you.

Above all, Father, because you have made the ultimate sacrifice for us, we want, at the very least, to bring a smile to your heart, and to those you love so much– today.

    Mart:

At the beginnning of each new day,it is easy to focus on worries or selfish agendas. Your words were helpful in trying to get our attention on God instead of ourselves. It reminded me of Psalm 40:1: “I waited patiently for the Lord and He inclined to me and heard my cry.” Thanks for your thoughts.

Thank you Mark, for a wonderful, selfless, hope filled prayer to start the new day.

The power of faith and what we hold dear are the core of what we will follow,
and in the world we live in today, one knows not what might come tomorrow.

The things of this world and even our health are temporal and fleeting at best,
unshakable peace that comes with God’s Spirit will enable us to stand to the test.

Imagine how the world would light up if all of us, all His people that are called by His Name all over the world, would humbly begin each day with this prayer and this attitude.

I woke up this morning singing, “Amazing grace how can it be, that YOU would die for me”. I pray that today we give thanks no matter what comes our way. We have so much to be thankful for, Amen. God took on human flesh and died so that we may live. WOW!!!!!

  5. sduffy says:

again, AMEN…every thought, every word, every action for the Glory of God today and every day.

And all of this we pray and ask in Jesus’ name. Thought I would add this important ‘concluding line’ to your sincere prayer that resonates with the prayer rising to God from all our hearts today!! And please don’t start another big debate on this…just relax for once and pretend to be a six year-old in my Sunday school class…just for today!

daisymarygoldr, :-). Thank you… when I read that I thought. Yes, you are so right. Was going to add it to the end of my prayer. But thought. No can’t do that. Don’t want to lose the smile of your comment!!

Good Morning everyone, Mart, i believe when God said the Just shall live by faith this includes my prayer time.
I believe because we are each one different even more so than snow flakes, living by faith will not only mean something different to each one, but what thought, or thoughts from God will guide our life today will be different.
My desire is that my prayer life be guided by thoughts from God, thereby i know they will be answered as God desires, not just my first prayers, but throughout the day.
Proverbs 3;5,6 is a part of my prayer time with God throughout every day, desiring for God’s guidance, knowing this is His desire I will be living by faith.
I believe living by faith is not just beliving what God says, but making God’s ways my way of life.
Fellowshipping with God throughout each day, and desiring such things as to be able to rejoice and be glad no matter what, can be accomplished if I will just love the Lord, and others, and know God will work every thing out for good.
Fellowship with the Lord first thing every morning is the only way to start a day, thank you Mart for this very important part of living the abundant life Jesus offers if i believe it and make it a part of my life.
