Truth in and Out of the Bible

Confucius (551-479 BC)

In principle, what is the difference between a proverb of Solomon that says, “As snow in summer and rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool (Prov 26:1), and a quote of Mark Twain who is quoted as saying, “It is better to deserve honors and not have them, than to have them and not deserve them.”?

That question has been rattling around in my head as I’ve been weighing what seems to be the right and wrong way to conclude that “all truth is God’s truth.”

A teacher I know says, “Something is not true because it’s in the Bible; it is in the Bible because it is true.” His statement recognizes that there is a world of truth that can be quoted by people like Mark Twain… while recognizing that the Bible has a special purpose in defining the origin, characteristics, and goal of truth.

For example, seems to me that the Devil could probably fascinate us with truth, until the day we die. But he would do so, out of context, in a way that did not honor the Source of all truth, and in a manner that did not bring us to the Mediator who alone can help us resolve the problem of the lies we have believed about God, ourselves, and others.

In the process “the Father of lies” would alter the use of truth, and the reason we have been given the capacity for knowledge and understanding that resonates with the reality and character of our God.

Could this be one of many reasons that an inspired Bible (and its God-given boundaries) are so important? Could it also help explain why Solomon seems to have been honoring in his proverbs the kind of truth that can be used to build bridges or barricades to knowing the one true God?

In other words, do you think we’re on the right track to observe that Proverbs 26:1 and the above quoted words of Mark Twain are saying the same thing in principle, but that the purpose of the two can be worlds and eternities apart?

Mart, The search for the *truth* has taken many people on many journeys along different paths.

All the ancient Philosophers concluded that the sole purpose of man was to be happy.

I know only too well, that the scripture would express the purpose of man is for the glory of God.

God spent a great deal of effort in trying to make man realize, that true happiness only comes through the giving of oneself to the needs of others.

This is a truth, that the Bible teaches.

When you broached the subject of Proverbs, I considered quoting the Arabian, proverbs as well as Ben Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac.

There is also plenty of *wise* teaching scribed in the far eastern religions, all having the twinge of *truth* attached to them.

The difference between them all, is what direction do they lead us toward?

Do they lift up the wisdom of man and his quest for happiness?

Or do they point to the need for a savior a God who can take the simple and recreate the wise?

For me, the wisdom of the Bible lights a pathway to my need for Jesus Christ, and places Him squarely as the personification of *Truth*

First of all Mart, I am so glad to see the old Mart back, with, life changing wisdom from God. With small tibits of His wisdom to keep me thinking toward Christ.

Second Wow Steve between you and Mart. Really don’t see how anyone could add to the subject. This is one time where we all should just set back re-read what Mart Said and how, you Steve added to it.

I am going to do some heavy thinking, or better put meditation.

For I looked for Truth everywhere and found that only the truth/knowledge that directs me to Him who is the source of all knowledge, everything else is in vain.

  3. poohpity says:

In one of my translations Proverbs 26:1 says, “Honor doesn’t go with fools anymore than snow with summertime or rain with harvest time”. I was thinking about Solomon and how he gained the wisdom or how anyone gains wisdom but by experience. Been there done that and it either worked or it did not. It would seem that the world’s apart is to gain the honor from man or from God. I believe that Solomon’s epitaph would read, “I tried everything under the sun and found God was the only thing that brought me true understanding”.

Can you imagine what Solomon’s mind was like? He was a genius like no other. When he came to his bottom line he understood that without God it was all folly and made no difference.

Truth as per many who have written many things with all different philosophies were in reality not truth at all because flaws have been proven and total truth not found. I can only speak for myself that what I have read and reread in scripture has yet to be proven not to be truth. It all seems to work but it takes years of ah-ha moments to understand the truths that lie in it’s pages and I seriously doubt if I will ever understand all of it because new truths arise everyday. Plus the older I get I forget half of what I thought I knew, lol. I really think I am better off with shrinking brain syndrome, I am more at peace. lol!!

  4. Bob in Cornwall England says:

Solomon asked for wisdom and got it, be carefull what you ask for! what seemed a blessing became a curse to him in the end.
There is wisdom all around us, we just have to be wide eyed and open to it.

  5. saled says:

Yes, I think that we are on the right track to say that Proverbs 26:1 and the Mark Twain quote are saying the same thing in principle but the purpose of the two may be worlds apart.

Another example of the father of lies using truth to distract us may be this quote that I recently heard a speaker use with a group of school children: “The more that you give, the more you receive.” He had the children repeating this like a chant and they really got into it. While I was listening, I was thinking, so is this why we give, that we might receive? Pair this quote with the words of Jesus in Luke 6:38: “Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye measure it shall be measured to you again.” I think the principle of the quote and this verse is the same, but the purpose of each is far different.

Mart’s comment about the Devil fascinating us with the truth without bringing us to the Mediator who alone can resolve the problems of the lies we have believed about God, ourselves, and others explains a lot to me. I’m often puzzled by the ‘nice’ lives built by those who know the truth that living a principled, moral life pays off, yet don’t acknowledge that there is a God. Their ‘common sense’ pays off for them, and they just shake their heads at those of us who are not blessed with it. I have to remind myself that building a ‘nice’ life here may not be what it is all about.

  6. marma says:

Taking the Mark Twain saying into account, seems to me MT is coming at it from man’s point of view. “What is good for me.” rather than God’s.

Truth helps us when it is from God’s point of view, or points to our relationship with Him. Proverbs 3:5,6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.

The problem with man’s wisdom is that it doesn’t direct our attention to God. And our own understanding is apart from God and is seriously flawed by sin.

  7. refump says:

The part that caught my attention the most was Mart’s statement of:”For example, seems to me that the Devil could probably fascinate us with truth, until the day we die. But he would do so, out of context, in a way that did not honor the Source of all truth, and in a manner that did not bring us to the Mediator who alone can help us resolve the problem of the lies we have believed about God, ourselves, and others.” The verse that came to mind when I read that was I Peter 5:8 -“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Mos of us think we will recognize the devil & “his truths” but he can also show up as someone you respect or look up to. Who just because he is a well known author or seemingly a great person or even a pastor we think whatever they say must be truth from God. This is why it is so important that we test everything we hear with what does God’s word say about this & to also try & understand the context of God’s word before we buy into the so called truth or word’s of wisdom. Sometimes we need to wrestle with it for a long time before God reveals HIS truth to us. Yes, God can speak to us through others but we also need to spend personal one on one time with HIM to really KNOW HIM. We have to be careful we are not depending on being “spoon fed” everything for our spiritual growth & that we do some of the “heavy lifting” for ourselves including testing all “truths” that come from men/women.

  8. Mart De Haan says:

Yes, Marma, I agree. But do you think it’s possible that in seeing the danger of “wisdom misused” some of us have “batched” and labeled it as “the wisdom of the world”… with the result that we minimize the “general revelation” that is out there to be used for the loving purposes and honor of God?

I think that’s one thing the Proverbs of Solomon show us: i.e. that there is a way of relating to and affirming common wisdom and “general revelation” that really comes from and belongs to our God.

  9. marma says:

Yes, Mart, it would be easy to say, “Because Mark Twain said it, it is the wisdom of the world.” I presumed a little because MT said it, just from my knowledge of the author and an assumption as to his point of view, which may or may not be right, but doesn’t necessarily mean what he said wasn’t true.

It is the flip side of the coin, so to speak, of what Refump was saying when pointing out that we can’t merely take a pastor or author’s word for something without searching the scriptures whether these things are so.

We also can’t automatically dismiss a saying because Mark Twain, or a well-known atheist said it.

I do think we need to ask, “What did the writer or speaker mean by that?” and then search the scriptures as to whether that matches up.

It is interesting to me that Paul in Acts on his visit to Athens, while distressed by their idolatry, quoted their poets. He did so after saying, God said this, as also some of your poets have said, we are his offspring. Paul put God’s truth first, and showed them where there truth aligned with God’s, then expanded on what God had said.

That is a rough summary, I guess, but I think it illustrates what you were saying about general revelation. The Greeks had knowledge/truth, albeit intertwined with their own mythology. Paul was able to separate the myth from the truth, because he knew God and knew his Word.

We aren’t given a pass on evaluating wisdom just because of who said it either way. That seems to me to be part of the maturing process.

  10. rxman says:

What is “truth”? Is there absolute truth? Isn’t truth something you believe is true? What about this scenario: I believe something to be true but later on something is revealed to me to show me that the “truth” that I believed is no longer true. What then? It seems to me that “truth” is a very precarious thing, something that should almost never be taken at face value, something that should always handled very carefully. Wars have been fought, friendships have been severed, people have been killed because someone thought they had the “truth”.

  11. poohpity says:

Truth is, if you touch a fire you will get burnt. Not because I believe it will happen but because it is truth. Of course if I do touch the fire and believe it will not burn and get burned is it then just a vain philosophy about there is not absolute truth it is all in my mind. The blisters on my hand prove it is absolute truth. “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority”.

  12. marma says:

rxman: I think our understanding changes, but not truth. We tend to use the word “truth” a lot when we are really talking about the extent of our understanding.

For example, when I was a child and my mom was pregnant, I thought the baby was in my mom’s belly–that is, I didn’t differentiate, having little knowledge of anatomy. Later in my life I came to understand my sister wasn’t in my mom’s stomach. However, as far as I could understand at the time, I had the location right.

There are situations in life when I may perceive something as truth–but my perception or acceptance may have been off because I just didn’t know all the facts. I’m very limited, which is why I can’t always trust what I’ve decided is true.

But if there is a God, a creator and sustainer of all things, who is good and true, then I can trust in him and what he says is true. One of the early passages in the Bible talks about Abraham and his servant, who said that God had not left his master, Abraham, destitute of truth.

God wants us to know the truth–about who he is, who we are. Jesus makes the promise to those who believe in him, that if they continue in his teaching, they will know the truth and the truth will set them free. We grow in our understanding of truth, it’s not something we have down and then move on. We need to be willing to be taught.

  13. cheesemanb says:

    Dear Mart,
Regarding Faith and Reason – in reference to your July 2010 “Sovereignty and Free Will” While reading your discussion on the difference between Calvinists and Arminians- you stated, “Calvinists link what God foreknows to what He predetermines,..Arminians to humans freedom of choice.” I read that to my wife who is a seminary graduate and she stated- they are all man made differences– I agree and aren’t you really splitting hairs as to what “predetermines” means here- I say because God is omnisciente one could argue because He knows who and who will come to Him by free will- he is predetermining- not predirecting who comes- it’s the inidividual man’s choice- not God that decides.
So really there is no argument between Calvninists and Arminians- a common falicy because we think like humans not as God thinks.
-Kind of like the lame argument about Tithing- Too much of the pastors use it as a crutch for Job security- I am a Gentile who came to Christ- what would I know about
Old Testament regulations- God owns everything- I do tithe out of gratitude for His unfailing blessings and I put Him first- The New Testament speaks more about putting into practice the Gifts of the Spirit- but how many churches actually use them daily. How much is tithing emphasized in the New Testament?

  14. SFDBWV says:

The truth is ( you have to love that opening statement)..That there is a difference between truth and wisdom.

Wisdom may be the ability to recognize truth when it is seen or heard, but by itself isn’t always truth.

Truth is relevant to other factors, time for one…I can say it is raining, and that can be true, but it will stop raining and at that time the comment I spoke earlier is no longer true.

Perspective is another variance from truth….The scripture asks “can a man take fire to his breast and not be burned?”… well He can if he is wearning protective clothing and has taken protective measures in order to do so.

By mastering fire man has been able to cook, make steel, generate power, ect…It was a wise use of fire that enabled man to be able to do these things.

However as Deb has mentioned the truth is that by not being wise, one can be burned.

Wisdom can be used as a way of living better, which may have no signifigance to spiritual matters.

But…What does it matter if man gain the whole world and lose his soul?

So true wisdom must lead the wise toward there being a God, and true wisdom of one seeking God, will lead the wise to the *Gateway* to God…Jesus Christ.

Whereby the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of the scripture can lead the wise to salvation, redemtion, and the union of the Holy Spirit which it is said, will lead all to the *Truth*

    Steve

  15. marma says:

SFDBWV: What you said is worth repeating: “Wisdom can be used as a way of living better, which may have no signifigance to spiritual matters.” Better living won’t get you born again, nor solve the sin problem.

The passage you quoted from, in Mark 8/Matt 16, comes after Jesus spoke of his death. Peter rebuked Jesus then Jesus rebuked Peter. Peter had one idea about the truth and the roll of a messiah, but it was wrong and even from Satan.

Peter knew the truth about Jesus being the Christ, the Son of God, but that didn’t prevent him from being wrong in the application of that truth. There are many who are satisfied with the truth that Jesus was a good man, an example to be followed, and yet would with not understand the necessity of Christ’s death on the cross. The Gospel is foolishness to those that perish.

When I think of spiritual wisdom my mind goes to the book of James first. But some of my favorite verses about wisdom are found in I Corinthians 1, such as verse 24, which says “Christ the wisdom of God.” When I mentioned the subject of this blog to my sister, she immediately said, “Truth isn’t a thing, truth is a person” to which I would agree; Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Both wisdom and truth are embodied in Christ.

As you said, a definition for wisdom may be the application of truth. Wise sayings may echo the scripture, but without Christ, they are of limited value. If the purpose is a mere betterment of man, isn’t that the enemy’s program? Christ says, deny yourself, and take up your cross and follow him.

  16. marma says:

Sorry, I meant “role” not “roll”. I’ve been involved in rolling over purchase orders this week, so that spelling is automatic. -marma

  17. marma says:

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. -Gal 2:20

  18. marma says:

I added that verse as the response to Christ’s invitation. Occurred to me after I posted. Maybe seemed a bit out of context, I don’t know. It’s been a long day, and spent part of it looking after our sick dog. She seems to be better now; probably ate something she shouldn’t have.

  19. SFDBWV says:

“Truth in and out of the Bible”….If you think about it, our faith stands against many of the truths the world has accepted…Or at least what the world accepts as truth.

Our faith is very…unatural in many ways.

We believe in an unseen God, the world wants proof before they can say He exists.

Our faith teaches us to forgive an enemy and love him even as we love ourself….Does the world accept this as a truth?

Our faith believes that there is a hell…Does the world believe that there is?

The big truth we accept from scripture, is the death and resurection of Jesus of Nazareth…We would say the truth is that He rose up from death and his victory gives us the same ability to rise up from death to eternity…..Does the world accept this as truth?

Looking through scripture we see an axe head that floated, the plagues of Egypt, a man walking on the sea, baskets with only a few fish and bread that fed thousands….are these truths that the world would agree is a truth?

According to scripture, the world and all of the universe was created in 6 days, that 8 people shared a boat with 2 of every kind of animal through a flood that destroyed all living creatures in all the world, to repopulate the world anew.

That all of mankind came from Adam and Eve.
That Eve came from Adams rib.

Looking ahead to a future hour, our scripture explains the social, political and religious attitudes that exist and events that will hearald the return of our Lord, to me this is a truth….What does the world think of my *truth*?

Whereas there may be truths the world accepts that align with truths the bible teaches from, many of the truths of scripture collide with the worlds acceptance of truth.

Just like the Magi…the wise know the truth and seek out the Christ.

    Steve

  20. Elaa says:

“In other words, do you think we’re on the right track to observe that Proverbs 26:1 and the above quoted words of Mark Twain are saying the same thing in principle, but that the purpose of the two can be worlds and eternities apart?”

I think we are on the right track to observe and should probably state it as such.

The truth is that Mark Twain may have written many profound things, but they will never translate into a “rhema”. The conviction that comes from the Spirit of God upon His Word – will it be upon Mark Twain’s words?

Once, I was unable to attend my regular church because I had to get to work early. I looked around my job for a church, and walked into one around the neighborhood. The reading of the day was from Mark Twain. From what I remember, it centered around not praying evil for someone who has wronged you. It did make sense, but it did not resonate with my spirit man. It wasn’t long before I walked out of the church. Yet, had that been the Bible, who knows what conviction the Holy Spirit would have placed on my heart?

I find it challenging when I hear Christians praying against bad times simply because they are bad. When I became born again, I was thought to base things on the Word of God, and I feel more comfortable hearing believers forbid a thing to happen because the Bible so declares it (e.g. No evil shall befall you, neither shall any plague come near thy dwelling place).

And that, in my thinking is the truth in and out the Bible. The power behind the Words in the Bible exist nowhere else, and consequently, cannot produce the same result however “the same/similar” they may be.

  21. marma says:

When I was growing up, I had the following quoted to me as if they were from the bible:

“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you”
    “Love thy neighbor as yourself”
“The Lord helps those who help themselves”

The second one is in the bible. The first one, I can’t find. The third one frustrated me to know end when I eventually became a believer, as it was antithetical to the message of grace.

Later, I remembered reading the following:

“Put your hand into the hand of God, it shall be better to you than a light, and safer than a known way.”

I remembered especially the last part: better to you than a light…” I had forgotten where I read it and it resonated with me so much I was sure it was from the bible. When I asked my sister where that “verse” was she laughed and said, it wasn’t in the bible, it was a poem above a bench in a local public garden.

The truth of God’s guidance being better than depending on our physical senses and own understanding I think is found throughout scripture; plenty of examples exist.

However it still drives me crazy when I hear “The Lord helps them who help themselves” as if it were scripture, when we know that is blatantly not true from scripture. (Romans 5:6, for example, “When we were yet without strength…”

  22. SFDBWV says:

I love to reread the story of Christ’s birth. The innocent faith of Mary, The character of Joseph, the supernatural encounter between Mary and her cousin Elizabeth.

Just by hearing Mary say hello, the Christ’s messenger still in his mother Elizabeth’s womb, leapt for joy.

This is how it is when the Spirit in me hears *truth*, a strange joy and understanding, an aknowledgment, sweeps over me…my spirit smiles because I know tis true..He leaps within me and bears witness of Himself.

If we didn’t speak….the rocks would…To lift up the Christ and proclaim Him as King of Kings.

His story, is a *truth* you can rely on.

    Steve

  23. marma says:

Isn’t that one of the ministries of the Holy Spirit? He guides us into all truth (John 16:13). By this I think he helps us recognize truth, shows us where a “wise” saying veers off from the truth, and stops us when we start going to far in our interpretation of scripture.

A bible teacher of my sister’s said that as a teller in a bank, he learned to recognize counterfeit money by handling the real thing so much. He used that as an analogy for recognizing false teaching. The Spirit uses the Word of God to give us a “yea” or a “nay” when we are confronted with “truths” outside of scripture.

I think there must be an element of maturity there, too, then, because when we are inexperienced due to lack of use of scripture, we are more open to deception.

  24. SFDBWV says:

Oh yes Marma, our defense as well as our offense is the full armor of God, that shields us from deception and prepares us for the battle in the spirit world.

    Steve

  25. SFDBWV says:

Marma, Outside of the Bible two of the finest books I have read are both writen by Billy Graham. One titled “The Holy Spirit” the other “Angels”.

The books both expose truths about what the scripture states concerning their titles..

The “Person” of the Holy Spirit, His duties, resposobilites and *Personality*.

Angels, ranking, duties, power and insights.

These books refer to scripture to validate their claims, and inso doing, resonates with the Spirit within us in recognising an accurate description of both.

Though outside the Bible, these books, and may I say many more, speak the truth…Truth being recognized by the Person of Truth that dwells within us….The Father, the Son and The Holy Spirit.

  26. xrgarza says:

Greetings, I’ve missed you all I have not read all of the responses I have been what they call an Evangelical Christian for 43 years and the 10 years prior to that I was a Catholic.

The Bible says I believe in James (correct me if I’m wrong) “study yourself to be approved” you can’t always rely on anyone else’s interpretation of the truth.

The Apostle Paul told I believe the Galatians “even if an Angel from heaven comes and gives you a different message don’t believe him” Wow!

In the last few years, the Lord has been teaching me things that I have never learned in nor have I ever heard in church. I must admit I was afraid to follow through.

The Bible says my sheep know my name, and they follow me.

When Jesus healed the blind man by putting mud on his eyes, that is something that had never been done before, and I have not heard of it happening since. But just because it’s only happened once, doesn’t mean that it isn’t from God.

The Blessings that have come as a result of obeying God’s truth to me personally have been pretty amazing.

I am in the process of writing a booklet of this truth that the Lord has been teaching me, because I want to share this with the world.

All truth has not yet been revealed, but we must be careful because the Bible does warn us that the days will come that if we are not careful even the most elect will be deceived.

    Rocky

  27. Hisgirl4life says:

This is an interesting subject! When thinking about “truth in and out of the Bible,” two passages come to mind. The first is John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The second is John 14:6: “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the TRUTH and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

The Bible is our Truth, as it is the spirit-filled, God-breathed truth. As for quotes from others, taking scripture out of context to suit our own desired outcomes or our own flawed human wisdom, we need to be careful to prayerfully lean upon God to provide personal instruction in our lives. I believe He is sovereign and all powerful and can use–and does use–any means or venue to communicate His purpose, plan and will for our lives. That requires having an intimate relationship with Him. Yes, in our human sin, we will make mistakes, misteps and errors, but God is capable of using the messes we make in our lives to His glory and good.

As mentioned previously, the world will always have it’s questionable view of absolute truth. Many college science classes present evidence of truth. In the end, when in question, as followers of Jesus Christ, we will always hold up the Bible as truth.

  28. foreverblessed says:

I agree with you hisgirl4life, but in the end, we will always hold up Jesus Christ as our Truth:
John 14:6 “I am the way and the TRUTH and the life.

Sometimes our interpretation of the bible has been wrong, the bible is not wrong, but we interpret it wrongly.
Like we thought in the middle ages that the earth was the centre of the universe, science showed it was different.
    Then what is truth?
On these scientifically proveable things our faith is not based, so it is essential that we figure out on what our faith is based, lest we be disturbed if certain things we thought were the truth had to be reinterpretated.

It is good to rehearse our creed of faith once in while out loud.

  29. marma says:

SFDBWV: I studied the ministry of the Holy Spirit way back when in Bible School, but years later it was a study on the Holy Spirit beginning with the Old Testament promises and how the Holy Spirit was promised through Christ that I really began to get how that was an important part of our salvation. Watchman Nee’s Normal Christian Life also has helped me with that. The life has to be lived out by the power of the Spirit, not in our own strength. I’ve enjoyed hearing Billy Graham preach, but I’ve never read any of his books. Thanks for the tip. II Cor 2:9,10 are amazing verses, aren’t they?!

  30. Bob in Cornwall England says:

Hi Rocky, Nice to hear your “voice” again.

    Your quote:
“When Jesus healed the blind man by putting mud on his eyes, that is something that had never been done before, and I have not heard of it happening since. But just because it’s only happened once, doesn’t mean that it isn’t from God.”

We had a travelling evangelist base himself in our little Barn Fellowship a few years back. He travelled around the country in a large camper van, I believe you call them ARV’s or something, and said God had called him to Cornwall.
In one of his tales about his ministry he mentioned he had met a blind man in St Just, near Lands End, and when they prayed he was led to make mud from the ground with his own spit and put it on the mans eyes and he was able to see again. This was told along with other miracles and did not feel good to my spirit as it sounded a little boastful and I felt Jesus was not given all the credit.
A few months later he was asked by our elders to leave our little church, only about 30 of us max, because he used to often give a prophesy or interpretation to a tongue that did not conform to scripture or what God was saying to our church.
I have heard many tongues and prophesies and the Spirit within me always jumps, like Steve said, when it is right and that only happens when the prophesy contains almost all scripture quotes.
Only THE WORD of GOD is the true marker of TRUTH and every thing else must be judged against it.
Yes there is truth outside of the Bible, but it has to contain Bible Truth.

    Bob

Thank God, for listening to our prayers!

It is good that we check “truths” with the bible,

The saying of Mark Twain means the same thing as Proverb 26:1
I have been looking at it a fewe days now, and do not see a difference.
If God speaks to us through a poem, and we say: it is not out of the bible, and lay it aside too easily, we might miss something God wants to teach us.
But if we check the poem and see if we can find it in the bible, in this case we can in Proverbs 26;1, then why not listen to it and be taught by it?

God speaks in many ways, even when the message is brought with a wrong intent, we can still learn from it. (I am going out of topic here). Like David did when he was cursed by Shimei (2 Samuel 16:5-13)
    You man of blood, v7-8
David said; Leave Shimei alone, let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.
(and David added this, when it is from God, the bad will always turn to the good:) It may be that the Lord will see my distress and repay me with good for the cursing I am receiving today.
David checked immediately what Shimei said, to what God would sayto him: Shimei said he would come to ruin, because of all the blood shedding, and David said: God will bless me later, for the harsh, but true treatment, I receive today. David did not listen to the last part of Shilmei (come to ruin), but he did not lay aside the first part because of the last part.

Later we see how David learned from it, when he said in 1 Chronicles 22:7-10
(and I believe it dawned upon him on the moment Shimei said this to him when he fled for his son Absolom).
But this word from the Lord came to me:
You have shed much blood and have fought meany wars. You are not to build a house for my Name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight. But you will have a son of peace and rest, and I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side, his name will be Solomon.

If we are in distress, in difficulties, many hard things come together, like when David fled, people will say things to us, that are harsh, things that cut deep into our being. Often what they say is the truth. If we could handle it, like David could, who saw Gods hand in it, we could learn from it, and change our ways.
But always looking for the love of God.

  32. Bob in Cornwall England says:

    foreverblessed,
That prayer seems so long ago now and was given over to God.
It just goes to show how we should pray constantly for one another as I can pray with complete and utter faith for your problems but have such difficulty letting go of my own.
You are right that sometimes what seems a bad word from a “friend” can actually be a word of truth from God. It is not what is said that is wrong but the way we receive it.

The Evangelist that came to our church had a good heart and loved the Lord enough to give up all his wealth to follow Him, but he had a controlling spirit and started to dominate our little fellowship. This would have been fine if led by the Holy Spirit but it was “out of context” with God’s Word to us at the time.
Our church has no minister as such, just four elders, and each service is Spirit led with a guest speaker or someone from the church.
I was rained off the boats on Sunday and was able to attend church for the first time in awhile. I enjoyed the worship time no end but my mobile went off and I had to cut it short and go back to work.
Sigh…., it was good while it lasted.

    Bob,

Praise God for the decernment that your church has.

Back in 1988 after my children came to live with me I was struggling financially & found it difficult to pay for child care.

I was not serving the Lord, so I was crying out to my father who died when I was 13, that’s when I heard this audible voice come through my car window it said: “Fear not for I’m with you always” & the very next day I found quality & affordable child care.

Years later I questioned, why didn’t I hear “Rocky, don’t worry about it, tomorrow you’ll get affordable child care”

Well for one it’s not scripture, and two the Lord knew what I really needed.

Years later I learned that deep down inside of me I was afraid of being left alone.

Praise God for His truth!! Amen

  35. Hisgirl4life says:

Heard a popular song on the radio this morning that speaks right to this topic. The song was “The Voice of Truth” sung by Casting Crowns. The chorus speaks what Mart talked about the devil–“the father of all lies”–how he can create confusion in our lives. Here are the lyrics to the chorus:

“But the voice of truth tells me a different story. The voice of truth says,”Do not be afraid!” The voice of truth says, “This is for my glory.” Out of all the voices calling out to me, I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth.”

Jesus Christ is that voice of truth that speaks in our lives, through His word, through the whispers of the wind, the beauty of music and the sounds all around us–both in and out of the Bible. I pray God will grant us listening ears to hear His voice of truth above the noise of this world that sometimes clouds our listening.

Yes, foreverblessed, Jesus Christ is our truth, as He speaks in the Bible and through other venues.

  36. xrgarza says:

    Hisgirl4life,

That was powerful, I’ve heard that song & even sang along with it.

But I have never simply read the lyrics only, Wow!

    Rocky

  37. Hisgirl4life says:

Yes, Rocky, songs can powerfully speak truth into our lives, but I’m reminded that God spoke and created the lyrics within the writer (the vessel) of the creation of that song. Many times in my life music has spoken right to a situation I’ve been praying about or a concern I have. Praise God, He can move through ALL channels of communication!

  38. poohpity says:

I was thinking this morning how do we know that what Mark Twain wrote was not from the bible. Many years ago the one book that people owned and read frequently from was indeed the bible. After the work day was complete they gathered around and read the bible. They did not have television. I believe that many writers read different books to gain info for their own writings.

Having the foundation of scripture even reading different philosophers I have seen the writings of Isaiah in their works. While going to school for counseling the different theorists had part of what the bible contained but not the whole. I think it is sort of like the chicken or egg which came first.

I believe that truth will endure through all generations because it can not be proven wrong. Sometimes people may present what they feel is a truth but in some time, in some way, someone will prove it is not but whether the hearer really wants the truth is a different matter.

The truth from the OT was handed down orally then Moses recorded with script and then the NT in the 1st century. I have found when the Lord wants to reveal a truth to anyone it can come to you by any means nothing is off limits. He can use a donkey if He wants, lol. When I first started this journey in 1989 God used the cartoons that I had on for the kids.

So how do we know if those who claim those words of wisdom as Mark Twain did that in reality it may have been from his knowledge of scripture. Having the foundation of that bible will give everyone such a heads up on knowing where it’s truths are found but God can use any means available to get them across.

  39. poohpity says:

I wonder Bob(NC) if there is truth that some may feel is true but complete truth would have to include God?

  40. Bob in Cornwall England says:

    Deb,

    There IS only one truth.

“I AM the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE, no one comes to the FATHER but by ME.”

There is no other truth in this universe.

The last days will be like the days of Noah, so we have to make sure we are “IN THE ARK” else we will be left behind.

The Ark is Knowing Jesus and having a personal relationship with Him.

    End of Topic!

    Bob

  41. poohpity says:

I must qualify my statement “some may feel” in their honest opinion they think the have the whole truth. lol When one is in court they say “The whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God” then lie. It kills me.

The quote you listed above from Jesus could also read “no one comes to the truth but by me”. Just a thought with a smile.

  43. saled says:

“Could this be one of many reasons that an inspired Bible (and its God-given boundaries) are so important?” Mart asked concerning the differing ways that truth may be used.

I thought of that yesterday as I was applying mud to the drywall in the old farmhouse that my daughter and her husband own. I’m mudding two rooms at once, a wall here, a ceiling there, as the other things going on in the renovation permit. I have a list of what still needs to be done to finish my part. Without my written words I would be lost and stand for hours trying to figure out which coat had been done where and what still needed doing.

There is just something about the written word. Yes, an inspired Bible is important. But when you really need to simplify things, go to the Word. John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth.”

  44. poohpity says:

I probably should have put a period and not a question mark. I am old and get confused sometimes, lol. It is so hot here you can cook an egg on the pavement in about a minute if that.

    Hey Gang,

What thought provoking insights by all. May God give me the words to express what is in my heart without any pretense.

I’m not very bright. I’m clueless as to what Solomon’s words mean without you coaching me. How much more I will be astounded by God’s take on the “truth”!

It scares me to think how easily swayed I am. The recent past is littered with TV evangelical preachers who have misled Christians. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same isn’t said about the current batch of popular evangelical writers both in print and on the internet.

Each day I pray for the grace and discernment to follow a path that is pleasing to God. At the end of the day I’m not sure of my results but I take some comfort in the sincerity of my efforts. Even then I may have had a self-serving agenda that is not apparent to me.

Of more import seems to be what is done with the “truth”. On most occasions I can’t seem to act on the “truth”. I don’t seem to absorb it sufficiently to have it be transformational of my behavior.

I work at following Jesus’ two great commands to love God and my neighbor by letting love trump truth. In all honesty I don’t know what the truth is. I may not know what the truth is until I go to visit God. Even then the truth may not be as important as loving God and my neighbors.

God bless you all for having the courage to get out of yourselves and share your ideas. I have profited.

  47. Hisgirl4life says:

    Welcome Bozo…
Thank you for sharing from your heart! Remember, God is not a list maker or a record keeper of all of the wrongs in our life. If that were the case, not one of us could measure up. All our best efforts are, after all, only human effort. God is more concerned with our hearts. I pray His Holy Spirit will find a welcome home in each of our hearts…here on this blog and in each person this reaches to. Make a home in our hearts Lord Jesus that a watching world will see you there.

  48. poohpity says:

Bozo, you seem pretty bright to me. Especially the light of your words.

    Bozo, Geetings!
I liked the “Hey Gang” greeting you gave as that really sums up for me what this blog is all about.
As I can’t attend my church at the moment, I find the fellowship of the “gang” here most uplifting each morning.
Bozo, you also mentioned TV Preachers and Writers etc. who have misled Christians and are exposed later.
I want to thank Mart for not ever preaching to us but gently guiding us into, what I consider, Holy Spirit led discussions that encourage us and help us to grow.
I am sure there must be a lot of vetting of unsavoury comments that must appear from time to time, but I thank God for the freedom to vent and cry and have a good laugh that is given to us here.

Steve, what a hoot! Made me laugh and I’m not sure why but LOL!

Your comments seem generally true to me in my experience. Does that make them half truths?

I don’t know how to say this without making my self a liar. God is the only one qualified to use absolutes, isn’t He?

Hare and Miltons statements and the Greek and Chinese proverbs are generalizations, aren’t they?

I’ve never thought of the word “truth” as being anything other than an absolute. Unfortunately, for many years, I thought I was in possession of the truth and I couldn’t understand why no one else could see that! I’m mortified for having lived with that “truth”.

I think God has a big surprise for me. His truth is the only one that counts in eternity, isn’t it?.

Now let me go google Hare and see who this cat is.

  54. dja says:

This is my first time posting. Hello, everyone:-) I have been blessed by all of you on this blog for a long time, and today decided to just say a little something.
When I was a child, my Mom and Dad (not believers but believed in doing what was right) use to always tell me this,”If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. That little “truth” stuck in my head as I grew up, and when I became a born again believer and was reading my Bible, I realized that the Lord used that little saying to write on my heart Ephesians 4:29, as well as other passages of His truth. The Lord is so good! He truly “works all things for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose”-Romans 8:28

  55. SFDBWV says:

Bozo, we have to laugh and have fun in our search for *Truth*, I believe God has a great sense of humor…look at the platypus.

I am equaly grateful that God is patient and long suffering as he has to have a good laugh at our *wisdom*.

Absolute Truth….like any worthwhile search; will lead us to the *Author of life* and the one who both possess it and gives liberaly to all who seek her….wisdom.

One word I like the sound of is “Angst” it sort of sounds like what I want to say when two of us see the same thing but discribe it in opposition.

Right here on this blog, we see the same thing repeated over and over, by people who it seems has not read what others have said, or attempts to say it “their way”.

Which in some way is what the blog attempts to do. Cause all of us to express our views, while seeing we agree with others, as well as learn from others, and yes disagree with others…..sometimes to our…angst.

  56. SFDBWV says:

Welcome aboard dja, look forward to your sharing and your comments.

  57. Hisgirl4life says:

Welcome dja! That’s a great truth. There are many Proverbs and Psalms that tell of the importance of our speech and our words. There are also many verses throughout the Bible that regard our speech. The one that comes to mind is Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

    Enjoyed your quotes, Steve!

Here’s another from Albert Enstein: “Be still. I want to know God’s thoughts. All the rest are just details.” I believe that coincides with Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Just another Mark Twain example, Mart).

  58. Hisgirl4life says:

Steve, your “angst” example is one of those great analagies into the field of communication. One sees black, another white…another grey. Then there are the creative ones who see a myriad of rainbow colors. :)

One could easily depart from the lighter side of discussion and delve deep into the interconnection of all people everywhere, The spiritual as well as ancestry that makes us all…one.

None of us can own a comment or think it original.

All thought is in us all, how easily it can come to the surface of our minds is at the mercy of many factors.

But if we go backward in ourselves far enough we come to God…One God.

All wisdom comes from that same one God, all foolishness comes from our departure from His wisdom.

All of us everywhere have the capacity to be wise or unwise, and all of us at some time or another do both…in season.. Ecc 3:1

    Steve

  61. foreverblessed says:

Truth, I also thought as truth being one thing, and it is in the Person of Jesus.
But on our way to our goal, we have all different little truths.
    John 8:
31So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples.

32And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.

34Jesus answered them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, Whoever commits and practices sin is the slave of sin.

35Now a slave does not remain in a household permanently (forever); the son [of the house] does remain forever.

36So if the Son liberates you [makes you free men], then you are really and unquestionably free.

So Jesus makes us free, and the Truth will set us free.

    Someone once said:
If you see the truth in your heart, and admit it, confess it to God, then you can be made free of that.
Like you see suddenely how much anger there is still deeply burried in your heart, after that the love of God has grown strong in you, the Holy Spirit show you the hidden anger,
That then is the truth in your heart.
If you can admit that truth in your heart you can be liberated from it.

And for each person that is different.
So truth can have many sides. But we all wear the buggle of truth around our waist.

Jesus can show Himself in many ways to different people.
In the beginning of our path as christian He is foremost a Comforter,
But when we have walked with Him a long time, there are times He wants us to make steps: like stop arguing, or stop thinking bad things about other people. He will say to us: think of good things in others, Phil 4:8, even about the person who makes your life so difficult.
I think Steve already wrote about this, july 18 1.21 pm. Truth

I agree with bozo, it is hard to talk about truth.
We only know in part, but enough for ourselves to make the next step to our maturity.

  62. Hisgirl4life says:

This morning in my reading, God brought me some interesting scripture passages that pertain to this topic of “truth.”

John: 8:31-32: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH will set you free.”

Another thought-provoking passage speaks of Mart’s quoting the devil as “the father of lies” as found in John 8:44 (Jesus is speaking about the devil): He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the TRUTH, for there is no TRUTH in him…for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (Thus, the confusion we feel in our lives.)

Still another verse quotes Jesus as he is praying for his disciples. He speaks about truth again in John 17:17:Santify them by the truth; your WORD is TRUTH.”

    Just thought I’d share…

  63. foreverblessed says:

I did what Bob in NC said, google truth in the bible gateway, and New testament, wow, what a lot of truth to think about, just like the reading of proverbs we did last week.
It is good that we study the bible a lot, so His truth comes into our mind a lot, and when we need it, the Holy Spirit will bring it to the surface.
This blog sure makes me study the bible a lot. And I would like to see the different sides everybody has.

  64. poohpity says:

Mart’s conclusion was “all truth is God’s truth”. So it seems that through the generations many men have taken credit for wise statements and paraphrased what was actually from God. It seems to be easier to bring glory and honor to man when many statements have their origin in the bible which brings Glory and Honor to God. Man ascribes his knowledge and wisdom to his own mind when in reality it was from God. The only way that we can know where those saying originated from is to have first hand knowledge of the Word and to ascribe it to God. The eternity apart would be giving credit to God or to man.

I wonder how many people who have never read the bible would say that those wise statements come from Mark Twain or others that have been mentioned when indeed they were plagiarized from God. Just a thought.

  65. poohpity says:

I was thinking about the truths from the bible and was wondering if we haven’t caused people to look to others rather than the bible because of damage we have caused by hitting it’s truths over people heads to turn them to it? So God in His infinite wisdom uses other means to show people what is actually contained in the pages because they have been harmed by unrealistic legalism and miss the grace and mercy of our God.

  66. bozo says:

    Good Morning Gang!

What a diverse group of people and ideas all coming up with the same conclusion; Jesus Christ is the Truth!

Only He has the inestimable perfection for the truth to set Him free. Perhaps that is why the world is in the state it is in?

The truth has rarely set me free when the statement is taken at face value.

Belief in Him has made communication with His Father possible. Belief in Him has opened the door for believers to hope for salvation. Belief in being completely honest with myself, wife, boss, etc. has rarely resulted in setting me free from the sin of shading the truth with them. I could ask God for the grace to be set free from this until my personal end times and it hasn’t materialized to date and time is getting short.

So what is the missing ingredient? If truth really set one free the world would long ago have attained perfection, wouldn’t it? Is it just me? What am I missing?

Jesus was pragmatic. He spoke in parables to relate His ideas to His brothers and sisters. Did I miss one regarding the truth being anything other than Himself? Do I apply the word truth incorrectly where it relates to human activities?

    bozo

  67. foreverblessed says:

Bozo, what do you mean to say with: “Belief in being completely honest with myself, wife, boss, etc. has rarely resulted in setting me free from the sin of shading the truth with them”.

The seeing the “truth” in your heart and admitting it to God, gives such a freedom. He takes the sin, and covers it with His blood. And we are free from it, and from the guilt.

Or is it hard to tell to others, is that what you mean to say?

Or do you mean to say, that it is hard to tell them the truth that Jesus is our only Saviour? I cannot tell that to my husband, or to my children, I wait, seek more closeness with God, until He gives me the words, until then I just show them love, and recently I focussed on smiling, being happy. Love and give a smile, a real one. A true one, not a fake one.

Bob in NC, Maybe bible gateway is a better searcher, when I do a search for truth in the NT, on bible gateway, I get 139 hits, of which 38 in the gospels.

Hisgril4life, we posted the same verse at the same time, speaking of being a church together.
And I agree that singing a gospel song, helps sink in the truth it contains.
It is good to start with the truth in the morning:
“Jesus,Hope of the nations” Today I started singing this song, and my day is brighter, the words keep coming back into my mind, and I am happier.
    Thanks all for posting!

  68. Hisgirl4life says:

Yes, I noticed we were reading the same scriptures at the same time! We just clicked in a few minutes apart. God must have wanted that verse on the blog. :)

  69. Regina says:

    Good Afternoon All,

Mart – Great topic. Want to share some brief thoughts on it.

You asked, “…do you think we’re on the right track to observe that Proverbs 26:1 and the above quoted words of Mark Twain are saying the same thing in principle, but that the purpose of the two can be worlds and eternities apart?”

My answer is, “yes.” Want to point out that King Solomon focused on a “fool.” While Mark Twain focused on “honor.”

Psalm 14:1; Psalm 53:1 NIV, “The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” God is not willing to bestow honor on a fool because his/her actions are against His will.

Both Nabal and Jezebel lost their life because they were fools (1 Sam. 25:25, 38; 2 Kings 9:37). Their actions were wicked and they reaped what they sowed. Sadly, Nabal’s name meant, “fool.”

Also want to point out that many people receive “honor” or “honors” that they don’t deserve everyday. While that’s dishonesty, it’s not on the same level as a blatant rejection of God’s laws, statues, precepts, etc. and His will for one’s life.

My first initial thoughts… I hope I’m not rambling here… in a hurry to get to Bible study.

    Blessings,

  70. marma says:

Hadn’t checked this blog for a while and when I came back –wow–everyone really warmed to this subject!

I got a kick out of the quotes and sayings and the truth of them or the lack of truth of them in Scripture. Very instructive. I’ve really enjoyed reading the posts.

I’ve been learning about being a more careful reader–I tend to scan–and subjects like this cause me to think more and mull over what I’ve read, in Scripture or out.

  71. SFDBWV says:

Bozo, Forgive me if I am reading you wrong, but you sound as if an outsider looking in on Christianity.

Some of your last comments ring with a need to understand as well as some clarification.

The truth didn’t set Jesus free, He sets us free.

The state of the world is fallen, and is in the clutches of evil because it has rejected the truth and freedom Christ offers.

Belief in Christ didn’t offer believers the hope for salvation…belief in Him brought salvaltion and hope for many other things.

I don’t know whether you had a typo or you intended tosay shade or share, but I was very confused by that entire paragraph.

It seems you are reaching out for answers and comfort, only Christ can saticfy, but if you have questions, that I or any of us here can help you with …please ask.

    Steve

  72. saled says:

I think what bozo is asking is this: Why are we still sinners if our belief in Christ has freed us from sin?
Why does he (and me) still shade the truth at times? Why aren’t we perfect yet?

  73. SFDBWV says:

saled, Do you not know why you are not yet perfect?

James 1:2-5 “My brethern, count it all joy when ye fall into diverse temptations;:3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

We live an imperfect life striving toward perfection, slowly and patiently growing until we die, our race having at that moment ended…Standing then before God perfect, only through and because of Christ.

Sin had us in an inescapable situation, we could not break free of it’s grip nor could we be rid of its stain upon us. We were guilty and imprisoned by it forever….Christ’s sacrifice, the personification of Truth set us free from that prison, from sins chains.

We are now children of God, children of the light, we may slip or even fall at times, but we are free of sins hold on us. Because Jesus Christ has set us free.

Why do you, saled, shade the truth? How do you?

Gosh Gang, you have me pegged. Yes, Steve I am flailing around outside of the lifeboat the rest of you are in on this spiritual sea.

Yes, Mart, I am quite capable of responding positively the deceptions of Satan. I can see myself on Palm Sunday worshiping Jesus and being deceived and crying out for his death on Good Friday. The question and circumstances you originally put out on the blog sounds like something straight from the Passion of Christ.

I don’t have any certainty that I would “do the right thing” and be loyal to Jesus. I acknowledge how fickle or cowardly I can be. I’m not happy or proud of this self knowledge. My sins are as predictable as Peter’s three denials of Christ.

I ache for Jesus or with him in the garden of Gethsemane yet I have no confidence that I wouldn’t be carrying the nails on the Way of the Cross. I feel as though I have stepped off a ledge over a bottomless pit of sins when I think of the prospect that was facing Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. I’m struck dumb by gratitude of just the fact that God created me. My mind is not capable of grasping or holding thoughts of the magnitude of the goodness of God.

How can I reconcile my flaws with the infinite love from God?

    God bless you all,
    bozo

  76. SFDBWV says:

Bozo, your flaws my flaws all the same flaws….It was my sins that nailed the innopcent Jesus Christ to the cross, my sins that caused God to send His Son as a way of bringing my lost soul back to Him.

My hands are as bloody as the roman soldiers who wounded Him and nailed Him there to die.

But praise God, Jesus loved me enough to allow all of the insults and passion He suffered, for me…I am that special to Him.

But I am not unique, His love is for every single person in all the earth, and if He had to come and die again for anyone He would…But His sacrifice was once and for *ALL*, all people and for all time

Climb with me, Bozo, into the Ark of God, accept Him for who He is…your personal savior…yours.

I pray for you and with, Bozo….freedom awaits your decision.

    Love, Steve

Bozo, I said on July 20, 2010 at 3:17 pm

    “There IS only one truth.

“I AM the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE, no one comes to the FATHER but by ME.”

There is no other truth in this universe.

The last days will be like the days of Noah, so we have to make sure we are “IN THE ARK” else we will be left behind.

The Ark is Knowing Jesus and having a personal relationship with Him.”

I agree with Steve and Bob(NC), Even though I am in the Ark with Christ I still fall short of what I should be. And the Ark is not a comfortable place to be bobbing about on the stormy sea of life and stuck in a confined space with who knows what crawling around, but it is a safe place and I know I am safe because God Himself shut the door on the outside world that is drowning in sin. Nothing can touch me because God Himself, Jesus of Nazareth, has sealed me with His own Blood.
One day soon the rain will stop and God will open that door to a whole new world that will be almost unimaginable, but in the meantime I will cling to Him as He is the Lifeboat of my salvation.

    Bob
    ps.
I live right by the Ocean and know guys in Air Sea Rescue and the Lifeboat who, almost every day, have to risk their lives to lift someone to safety.
That is exactly what Jesus did fof me.
Plucked me from the jaws of sin and death.

Good morning everyone…just read over the profound comments by everyone to catch up.

Bozo, your comments catch my eyes. I couldn’t help sensing that you might be consumed by the guilt of your sin, perhaps your own failures in life. You mentioned feeling like “you’ve stepped off the ledge into a bottomless pit”. Maybe someone, or many people, in your life caused you to feel shamed or unworthy, unloved; too broken to accept God’s love and grace He extends so freely to all of us. You are not!

Jesus is the answer you are seeking, Bozo. He is the Life Preserver you are seeking! In this life, others will fail us. Life will fail us. Difficult circumstances and trials will seek to discourage us. There is only answer, one way–It is Jesus.

We have all fallen short, Bozo. Romans 4:23 tells us, “ALL have sinned and fallen short.” But God tells us that “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and He WILL forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:6). Jesus Christ died for our sins (1 Cor. 15:3). He loves you Bozo, and He died for you. If you would have been the only one on earth, Bozo, He would have STILL died for you.

He desires to be your friend, your companion, your guide in this life. Take His hand…fall on your knees and admit your sin to Him…He wants to hear from you…accept His love and forgiveness for your mistakes, your failures, your sin. He will not turn away from you, but He’ll draw you nearer to him. He will never leave you or forsake you. (Hebrews 13:6). Everyone that receives Him, He gives the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12).

I pray that you might come to know the love of our Savior, the joy of spending time with him in His word (the Bible), and the peace of knowing you will someday spend eternity worshiping and praising Him. I’m praying for you Bozo…just as I know others here are praying for you also. God loves you Bozo…and so do we!

  79. poohpity says:

Jesus knew and knows we will never be sinless not in the past, present or future. Until the day we die we will cause harm to others and to our self which is what separates us from a Holy God. That is what sin is. In knowing this a perfect God took the form of man who knew no sin and took the punishment for us. Jesus took the consequences of our sin upon His shoulders knowing that we will still sin past, present and future but now we are covered by the blood of that sacrificial perfect lamb. God looks at us through the blood of that Lamb. We are freed from eternal separation of God and the relationship between God and man is restored by Jesus. We are now children of God.

We have a new identity in Christ that does not mean that the human part of us was taken away. We will always have the propensity to sin but we have a choice to choose not to also. Sometimes we do it and don’t even realize what were are doing is sin but now we have the freedom to ask for forgiveness from God and it is done. We are free to love God with all our hearts, souls and minds and to love others as our self.

In books that describe Revival periods in the church, I have read that when a Revival hits, people are so overwhelmed by their sinfulness, they struggle so heavily under their being sinful, that they think God cannot forgive me, it is too deep a dark whole. And the christians who are already christian in church, they pray and pray for them, and cite all these verses, quoted in the posts above.
    Untill they are freed!
That is the truth, that Jesus saves, He takes away our sins, He took them to the cross, and into the pit of hell. They are gone with Him. And He rose, and gives His life to us.
What a great truth, and if we read bozo’s comments, they are so needed, we would be nothing without it!
    Thank God for Jesus!!!

I have been in a place where I was away from the church for a while and thought God would never forgive me again, but that wasn’t true. He was right there, and He did forgive me, and took me right back to where we were before. It was a miracle that’s for sure. He is full of mercy and grace. He is excited when we come to Him.
I read this scripture the other day and thought it might apply to this subject. Love you all.

    Psalm 30:

4 Sing to the Lord, all you godly ones!
    Praise his holy name.

5 For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor lasts a lifetime!
Weeping may last through the night,
but joy comes with the morning.

    6 When I was prosperous, I said,
    “Nothing can stop me now!”

7 Your favor, O Lord, made me as secure as a mountain.
Then you turned away from me, and I was shattered.

8 I cried out to you, O Lord.
I begged the Lord for mercy, saying,

9 “What will you gain if I die,
if I sink into the grave?
    Can my dust praise you?
Can it tell of your faithfulness?

10 Hear me, Lord, and have mercy on me.
    Help me, O Lord.”

11 You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing.
You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy,

12 that I might sing praises to you and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever!

    Good Morning All,

WOW! Studying the topics on this blog site is like taking a Bible study course (online) free of charge! :-)

I read all of your comments and enjoyed every minute of it. I tried to remember to jot down thoughts that came to mind when I read your comments, but I was so engrossed in the reading that I forget to write! lol!

I did manage to jot down some thoughts on a few of your comments.

refump (July 18/8:13 am) …good comment. The devil can definitely use those in leadership positions (e.g. Pastors, Ministers, Teachers, etc.) to deceive people and prevent or make it hard for them to know “the truth.”

Your comment, “testing everything we hear with what God’s Word says and understanding the context of His Word” spoke to the importance of having spiritual discernment. Also brought to mind the Guyana Tragedy…the members of the Peoples Temple were searching for “the Truth” and a utopian existence and (sadly) they discovered too late that they had been deceived.

Steve – ..didn’t know if I had ever seen a Platypus, so I googled an image. I had seen one before but forgot what it looked like. Can definitely see God’s humor in designing it!

July 22/10:05 am – …good explanation (and visual imagery) of *the truth* of God’s love in sending His Son, Jesus, to die on a cross for our sins. Your words brought to mind John 3:16 NIV:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

I also pray for you, Bozo, that you will trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding; that you will acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your path (Proverbs 3:5-6).

As Christians, we all have to crucify our carnal nature/desires on a daily basis by praying (asking God to give us a fresh anointing of His Holy Spirit), worshiping God, reading and studying the Word, and worshiping God with other believers.

Bob (Cornwall)/July 22 (10:54 am) – …awesome testimony of the grace and mercy that God has bestowed on you (and all who love and trust Him). My Pastor taught on the manifold grace of God (among other things)on Wednesday. To make a long lesson short, God bestows His grace on the righteous and the unrighteous (Matt. 5:45).

Another Bible verse comes to mind… Lamentations 3:22-23 NKJV: “22) Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23) They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

    Blessings,
